Rockford's bass pedigree

Rockford Fosgate's Punch Stage 3 subwoofers come from a long line of high-performance subs that deliver real deal bass. Now, shallow-mount Punch Stage 3 subs make it easier to get impressive low end in smaller or hard-to-fit vehicles.

Advanced engineering

The P3SD4-12 12" shallow-mount sub hangs with its bigger brethren, thanks to advanced materials and engineering. Rockford uses an anodized aluminum cone and dust cap that makes the woofer light and easier to drive, yet rigid enough to maintain its shape when you turn it up loud. The M-Roll Santoprene™ surround also provides excellent excursion for maximum output while being durable enough to last.

Powerful bass for a tight space

A low-profile frame houses the sub, with abundant venting to battle overheating and thermal breakdown. At 3-11/16 inches deep, this sub will fit into places where no bass has gone before — just build a custom enclosure or find a suitable box. The dual 4-ohm voice coils allow you to wire up multiple subs or to coax optimum performance from your amplifier.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 300 and 600 watts RMS at 2 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Let a friend use my truck got it back my critical mass sl 12 2-ohm was ripped I didn't want to spend the money to replace with the same sub also can't find it anywhere. So I was a bit iffy about buying these considering it's a few hundred less. they handle 600 less rms watts. But when I put in these ps3's I was amazed that they were handling just as well as the critical mass 12s. I haven't really gave them much juice yet I have them at about 3/8 gain. Great sub sounds good hits hard I'm happy. Btw I have two ps3's in a custom sealed box being ran by alpine pdx1.100 1000w mono block amp and they are wired for 2ohm impedence

I bought 2 of these to put in a stealth box under the rear seats of my 2012 silverado crew cab and my god do they beat! This is my first project using shallow mount subs so I had my doubts when I first purchased them but those worries were quickly put to rest. The hits are extremely clean and precise and not to mention loud!!

Pros: They look great sound great and fit in fairly tight spaces I can't get enough of them!

Cons: Your not going to be winning any spl contests but I have no doubt you will be satisfied with these if you have limited space.

Features

Shallow Mount Design: The Rockford Fosgate Punch P3SD series shallow subwoofers are designed and engineered with a more shallow motor assembly which reduces the overall depth of the woofer, allowing it to fit in smaller locations in your vehicle. The P3SD4-12 used an anodized aluminum cone and Santoprene surround. An anodized aluminum voice coil former and spider venting help keep the subwoofer cool.

Dual Voice Coils: This woofer features dual 4-ohm voice coils for wiring flexibility. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 2-ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents an 8-ohm load.

CEA-2031 Compliant: Power handling on the P3SD4-12 subwoofer conforms to CEA-2031 industry standards. This means the subwoofer has the capacity to handle power under continuous demand, not instantaneous power handling, that over time, can damage voice coils.

FlexFit Basket: The Flex Fit frame utilizes slots (where possible) instead of single screw sized holes; allowing slight adjustment of the speaker when mounted.

VAST Surround: The Vertical Attach Surround Technique (VAST) increases a speaker's effective radiating cone area without increasing the size of the basket.

Anodized Aluminum Voice Coil Former: Aluminum voice coil formers offer superior heat dissipation over other commonly used materials. The hard-anodized finish increases the former strength. These two factors combine to improve the overall power handling characteristics of the subwoofer.

Spring Post Assemblies: The woofer features custom insulated/isolated compression input terminals with attached flexible, 16-gauge stitched tinsel lead wires that can withstand extreme duty cycles, fatigue and high current. The heavy-duty spring posts will accept pin connectors, single banana plugs, and bare wire up to 10-gauge.

Trim Ring: For added cosmetic appeal the woofer comes with an aluminum trim ring that mounts over the flange of the woofer. When using the trim ring, the woofer is first mounted with four screws, then the ring is mounted over the woofer, aligning the final four holes of the woofer with ring. The other four screws are used in these holes to mount the ring and woofer to the enclosure. The trim ring increases the top-mounting height of the woofer to approximately one inch and the ring diameter is 13-3/8 inches.

Break-In Period: Due to the design of the Rockford Fosgate P3 Shallow subwoofer, a 24 to 48 hour break-in period is required to allow for maximum excursion and low frequency extension. The shallow woofer suspension is intentionally designed to optimize once the internal components are exercised under normal music listening conditions.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box size range recommended by Rockford Fosgate is 0.60 to 1.20 cubic feet. Within this range, the ideal recommended size is 1.0 cubic feet, resulting in a 3dB down point of 40 Hz and a Qtc of 1.01.

Vented Box Volume: The vented box size recommended by Rockford Fosgate is 1.25 cubic feet. One 4" diameter x 12" long port should be used, resulting in a tuning frequency of 42.5 Hz and a 3dB down point of 34 Hz.

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

The P3SD4-12 is a great choice for a quality sub when you have space constraints. [ Chance  Dec 26, 2015 ]
Best ever [ MARTINEZ  Dec 11, 2015 ]
Crutchfield technical support was extremely knowledgeable and helpful in car stereo equipment. These speakers are shallow mount and appear to be meet my requirements for power and efficiency. [ Howard  Dec 05, 2015 ]

1 question already asked

The sealed box size range recommended by Rockford Fosgate for the P3SD4-12 is 0.60 to 1.20 cubic feet and the ported box size recommended is 1.25 cubic feet. If you have a sealed box that can fit the top mount depth of this sub (3-11/16"), then it should work, however it would perform best in a box with a larger internal volume.
