Advanced engineering

The P3SD2-8 8" shallow subwoofer hangs with its bigger brethren, thanks to advanced materials and engineering. Rockford uses anodized aluminum for the cone and dust cap making the woofer light and easier to drive, yet rigid enough to maintain its shape under maximum load. The M-Roll Santoprene™ surround also provides excellent excursion for maximum output while being durable enough to last.

Powerful bass for a tight space

A low-profile frame houses the subwoofer, with abundant venting to battle overheating and thermal breakdown. At 2-5/8 inches deep, this sub will fit into places where no bass has gone before — just build a custom enclosure or find a suitable box. The dual 2-ohm voice coils allow you to wire up multiple subs or to coax optimum performance from your amplifier.

Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Shallow Mount Design: The Rockford Fosgate Punch P3S shallow subwoofer is designed and engineered with a more shallow motor assembly, reducing the overall depth of the woofer and allowing it to fit in smaller locations in your vehicle.

Dual Voice Coils: This woofer features dual 2-ohm voice coils for wiring flexibility. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 1-ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents a 4-ohm load.

Compression Terminals: The P3SD2-8 features spring post terminals which accommodate pin connectors, single banana plugs, or bare speaker wire up to 10 gauge.

Note: The rubber magnet cover may need removed (or repositioned) to insert pin connectors or banana plugs.

CEA-2031 Compliant: Power handling conforms to CEA-2031 industry standards, meaning the subwoofer has the capacity to handle its rated power under continuous demand, not just for an instant.

VAST Surround: The Vertical Attach Surround Technique (VAST) increases a speaker's effective radiating cone area without increasing the size of the basket.

FlexFit Basket: The Flex Fit frame utilizes slots (where possible) instead of single screw sized holes; allowing slight adjustment of the speaker when mounted.

Trim Ring: For added cosmetic appeal the woofer comes with an aluminum trim ring that mounts over the flange of the woofer. When using the trim ring, the woofer is first mounted with four screws, then the ring is mounted over the woofer, aligning the final four holes of the woofer with the ring. The other four screws are used in these holes to mount the ring and woofer to the enclosure. The trim ring increases the mounting height of the woofer to approximately 1 inch, and the ring's diameter is approximately 9 inches.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Rockford recommends a sealed enclosure with an optimum internal volume of 0.25 cubic feet (from 0.2 to 0.70 cubic feet is acceptable). Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box: Rockford recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 0.75 cubic feet using one 3" diameter x 9" long port; this yields a tuning frequency of 47.5 Hz. Ported (or vented) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of very low frequency output (below 37 Hz).

Q
Can I use this subwoofer as a plug and play replacement for the OEM subwoofer in my 2022 Tesla Model 3 Performance or will I need additional specialty adapters, etc?
kirkus sirileous  Feb 16, 2024
1 answer
A
We do not offer any plug-and-play solutions for any vehicle, Kirkus. This Rockford Fosgate P3SD2-8 is not a physical fit in your vehicle. To see options that are a physical fit and would require an aftermarket amp and modification on install, please use our Vehicle Guide in the link below. Your factory subwoofer is a dual-voice coil speaker, so any replacement options that fit would require an aftermarket amp to power them. We do have some Alpine vehicle-specific system upgrades for Tesla now available, check them out if they are a match to your model Tesla using our guide below! We are here to help anytime. https://www.crutchfield.com/m_399/Car-Speakers.html

Q
can it be installed without the enclosure? I want it to just replace the oem of 2015 Lexus RX350
liem  May 05, 2021

Hi Liam, I installed this speaker in my old 2005 Toyota 4runner, the dealership wanted over $400 for the speaker and $980 for installation, admittedly it took me a couple of hours to do myself but only for the cost of the speaker from Crutchfield. The hole pattern on my Toyota 4runner was slightly different so I drilled 2 holes in the existing speaker mount on my Toyota to give better alignment. This speaker is far superior to OEM and the customer support from Crutchfield was awesome. Regards, Pat

Will this replace the factory sub in my 08 Honda Accord?
steven  Jan 26, 2021
1 answer
A
We do not have a subwoofer that is an easy fit replacement for the stock subwoofer in the 2008 Honda Accords. 8" subwoofers are the closest to the stock size but will need some custom work to be installed. Even with that custom work, this subwoofer is not a good match for the stock power. I recommend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to discuss possible ideas and get a personal recommendation on subwoofer for your Accord

Will this plug and play in my 2005 Ford F-150 KR?
david  May 19, 2020

No. We don't have a plug-and-play wiring harness for that location. Additionally the magnet diameter is too wide on that RF sub for that factory location.

If is the the same JBL system that is in the Tacoma the. I suspect yes. However, I do not know for sure. I find it unlikely that Toyota would change sizes and speakers for vehicles. If you do buy this and replace your old sub you won't be disappointed. Tip: add some poly fill to the sub box for a cleaner sound

Q
can a single 2ohm dvc sub be wired for a 2ohm amp?
juan  May 25, 2019
1 answer
A
No. If you only wire one voice coil, you will burn up the speaker posthaste. If your amp outputs at 2ohm, you will either need a single 2ohm voice coil, or a dvc with 1 ohm per coil(unlikely) wired in series, or a dvc with 4ohm per coil wired in parallel.

A
I installed in my 2003 4runner with no modifications. Sounds great.
zen  Mar 22, 2019
A
Yes. I put this speaker in my 2004 4Runner last year and the '04 and '08 are the same generation/body style. It took me about an hour to get it in using the step-by-step instructions that Crutchfield provided. I think I had to shave a little plastic off of the interior panel that covers it because this speaker is a little thicker than the stock speaker, but it wasn't much work and didn't damage anything in the vehicle. The speaker sounds good...much better than the stock speaker.
rob  Mar 22, 2019

It fit perfectly in my 2007 Toyota 4runner so I'm sure it would in your 2008.

Q
Does this work in a free air application?
jason  Aug 05, 2018
1 answer
A
Yes it will produce sound, no it will not sound good. Without resistance air pressure on the speaker, it's resistance rating will be skewed, meaning it will be wildly inaccurate with unfocused tone. In other words, quiet and flappy.

Q
With this sub (Rockford fosgate p3Sd2-8) are you able to mount it with the back touching the enclosure?
philip  Feb 23, 2018
1 answer
A
I didn't have this problem. From my experience with speakers, it's best to not have any part of the speaker other than the mounting ring touch any surface in order to eliminate any vibration. If you think this speaker might have this problem, look for a flatter speaker, or see if you can add a spacer plate between the mounting surfaces.

Q
Is this sub able to be mounted with the back pressed against the enclosure? (Rockford fosgate P3SD2-8
philip  Feb 23, 2018

A
I believe the subwoofer can be mounted with the back pressed against an enclosure provided that you put a dampening device such as a rug or EVA foam between the sub and enclosure wall. to isolate any rattling from the enclosure. I have my sub mounted in the a somewhat tiny crevice with insulation. My RF P3SD-8 Sub Works Great!
