Rockford Fosgate

Our take on the Rockford Fosgate Punch P450.4

Rockford Fosgate keeps making a good thing better with Punch amps — and you'll find one for every type of car audio system, from mild to wild.

Rockford Fosgate continues its commitment to outstanding design with the 4-channel Punch P450.4 amplifier. Specially-designed transistors perform better than the "off-the-shelf" models most manufacturers use. Additional heatsink material keeps these critical power components running cooler, reducing distortion and increasing amp efficiency.

The P450.4 delivers plenty of power to drive both your front and rear speakers, or you can run it in 2-channel mode to send 550 watts total to a pair of subwoofers. The variable frequency filters adapt the amplifier to fit the job at hand, while the wired Punch Bass EQ kicks up the lows when it's time to get the car shaking.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Features

Cast Aluminum Heatsink: The cast aluminum heatsink dissipates heat generated by the amplifier's circuitry. The inherent advantage of casting provides a 30% improvement of cooling over conventional extrusion heatsink designs.

INDIGO (INDexed Ideal Gain Operation): The INDIGO PWM (pulse width modulation) power supply is designed to make the most of the situation it is presented with. When battery voltage is low, you are guaranteed to get the power you paid for. When voltage increases, the amp makes even more power.

MEHSA (Maximum Efficiency Heat Sink Application): MEHSA is a Rockford Fosgate proprietary process that increases the heat transfer from the MOSFET devices to the heatsink. The multi-layer insulated metal MEHSA substrate operates with minimal thermal resistance, spreading heat both downward and outward to quickly dissipate heat from each device across the heatsink. This allows greater power output, enhanced thermal stability, and maximum reliability.

TOPAZ (Tracking Operation Pre-Amplifier Zone): TOPAZ is a circuit that simply eliminates noise. The TOPAZ circuit allows the amplifier ground to move with the source unit ground, creating a "noise elimination" zone just before the preamp section. If there is any noise in the ground coming down the RCA line to the amplifier, TOPAZ amazingly tracks it down and eliminates it. The result is a 30-40dB improvement of the isolation between input ground and chassis ground.

Trans-ANA (TRANSconductance Active Nodal Amplifier): Trans-ANA is a circuit that allows the audio signal to pass through the amplifier at low voltage. The signal is directly level-shifted to the fixed high voltage rails via a pair of drive transistors. Signal linearity is assured by an active node formed  by the drive transistors at ultrasonic frequencies. The result is crystal clear sound quality.

NOMAD (NOn-Multiplying Advanced Decision): NOMAD is an intelligent protection circuit that uses an analog computer to make real time decisions regarding temperature, voltage, current and impedance. The unit is protected without limiting sound output unless needed.

TO-247 MOSFET: The Punch P450.4 utilizes ultra high performance MOSFET output devices, giving the amplifier more power handling capability as well as lower thermal impedance for more reliable operation, even under the harshest load conditions.

2/4-Channel Switch: The P450.4 can be switched from a 4-channel mode to a 2-channel mode by pressing in the 2/4-channel switch. When operating in the 2-channel mode, the amplifier produces 4-channels of output with connections to only the front channel inputs.

Internal Crossovers: The amplifier's internal front and rear crossovers are 12dB/octave Butterworth filters, independently selectable for high-pass, all-pass (full range), or low-pass operation. Each crossover is variable from 40Hz to 400Hz.

Remote Punch Bass: The Punch Bass helps correct for acoustical deficiencies in the listening environment by helping reproduce full range sound without adding excessive boost. The Punch Bass control has a narrow band adjustment centered at 45Hz, variable from 0dB to +18dB. Using the mounting bracket, the supplied Punch Bass wired remote can be mounted in any convenient location. The module's case can be configured with the bracket above or below the module, or, without the case, mounted flush in your vehicle's dash (requires a 2" x 7/8" cutout with a maximum thickness of 3/8"). The wired remote is 2.292" wide, 1.194" tall and 1.502" deep (2.433" including the knob and cable connection). The included cable is 16.25' in length.

RCA Pass-Thru Jacks: The pass-thru jacks provide a convenient source for daisy-chaining an additional amplifier without running an extra set of RCA cables from the front of the vehicle to the amplifier location. The pass-thru jacks output a full-range signal.

Power and Protection LEDs: A yellow "Protect" LED, located on top of the amplifier, illuminates if a short circuit or too low of an impedance is detected at the speaker connections. A red "Thermal" LED illuminates if the amplifier overheats. A blue "Power" LED illuminates when the amplifier is turned on.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Power Connections: The power and ground terminals are nickel-plated captive c-clamp wire connectors and will accommodate up to 4-gauge wire. The remote turn-on terminal will accept wire sizes of 12- to 24-gauge. A Phillips-head or slotted screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

Speaker Connections: The 4-channel nickel-plated clamp wire connectors will accept wire sizes of 8- to 18-gauge. A Phillips-head or slotted screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

Remote Punch Bass Connection: An RJ-45 jack is provided for connecting the supplied Remote Punch Bass cable.

great value in this amp

Written By Ryan, Jupiter FL on Friday, September 26, 2008

Maybe I am just new to the world of amps since this is my first one but I am very impressed by this P450.4. Mine is rated at 97 W RMS so it is obvious that RF underrates their amps. I did my homework and researched all over the web for a good entry level 4 channel amp and this one not only had the best reputation but also was a great value when purchased here at Crutchfield.

Rockin Fosgate

Written By Joe, Oxnard, CA on Friday, September 19, 2008

Well after my 5 channel amp broke and then the head unit malfunctioned I was hesitant if I should pursue another system and install it myself this time versus having a shop do it. Crutchfield had a great deal on this amp and their INCREDIBLE Customer Service Dept took care of my malfunctioning head unit very quickly. How can I pass that up? I am glad I did not.

I installed this off a Kenwood DDX512 DVD head unit(Nice unit in itself - also recomended) to power Infinity Compomnents in the front doors and an MTX Thunderform under the rear seat of my Sport Trac. I am running a 2.5 ohm load at the doors and a bridged mono 4ohm load off the other 2 channels. The head unit is powering the rear door speakers for fill.

All in all, the system sounds INCREDIBLE. Bass is nice and tight, highs are bright and sharp, Amp pounds day after day without breaking a sweat. Thank you Crutchfield for another great system and a very satisfied customer.

Great amp!

Written By Mark, Rockford IL. on Tuesday, September 02, 2008

Great amp, rated 112@ 4ohm out of the box, running 4 Alpine SPS-600C
speakers in a Volvo V70 XC. Not going to rattle the windows but more than
enough for my needs. Worth the money.

Great AMP!

Written By alex43223, Columbus, OH on Wednesday, August 20, 2008

What a great amp! For the price, I don't think it can be beat. Rated at 112W RMSx4 into 2O, paired with the right speakers, and this thing is great! Rockford Fosgate makes great amps, and this is no exception. This is their lowest model amp, and it still sounds amazing. For the price, it's another great deal from Crutchfield!

Possibly the "best bang for buck" amp going!

Written By Jeff S., Fort Walton Beach, Fl. on Tuesday, August 05, 2008

This is the very first car amp I have ever had....and I am super satisfied
with my P450.4. Everybody seems to have heard of RF products and gives
them good ratings and reviews.....a common thread among reviews here is
that these amps are conservative with their power ratings-----I would have
to agree (really like how RF sends a "Birth Certificate" showing actual
measured performance....who else does that!?!). Anyway, I have this
powering a pair of aftermarket 6.5 mains with a 10" sub (225w RMS)
bridged across 3 and 4. I also have some rear stock speakers and tweeters
powered off HU for some "fill". While I'll stop (way) short of calling this
setup "competition" calibur, it WILL throw out very clean juice to your
speakers----I listen to mainly Rock music and recently had my buddies
begging for mercy after a 5 hour road trip. I haven't had the "courage" to
adjust my HU past 50 volume (goes to 62), but as stated by RF, the amp
seems far from distortion levels....and quite frankly, 50 on HU is about all
these 40 year-old ears can handle (BTW, I am running approx. 3/4 gain on
amp so I can achieve higher volume on HU to get my unamped "fill"
speakers matched). This amp is clearly a quality product backed by a quality
manufacturer....and has all the "bells and whistles" to keep me happy for
quite awhile.....recommendations to ALL!

Typical Rockford...

Written By Matt, Lebanon, OH on Monday, July 21, 2008

This amp is amazing. My birth sheet rates this thing at 98 watts rms to 4
channels at 4 ohms. This thing is only rated to put out 60 at those settings.
I'm pushing 2 sets of Polk/Momo components (front- MMC 5250, rear- MMC
6500) and they sound amazing. Setting up this amp was an absolute
breeze. Took no time at all, and sounds awesome. When setting the gain, I
thought my buddy was going to kill me because it got so loud. This thing is
absolutely amazing and just another reason why I only buy Rockford
Fosgate amps.

Also, in case you're interested, max power is 1760-ish.

First Amp I Bought

Written By Joe, North New Jersey on Sunday, July 20, 2008

I never bought or installed an amp into a car before. I didn't know where to look except the names I know from audio. Rockford Fosgate was one I kept in mind so I shopped around and did research with them. This amp has everything you need, Hi-Pass, Low-Pass, All-Pass, Pass Through outputs, among other things. It looks great in person and makes for a very clean install.

They send you a Verification Certificate and mine was rated at 102Wx4 at 4ohms and a max power rating of 1833W. Simply amazing for the price. Don't be fooled, this has the power and will be the amp that surpasses all others in it's power vs. price range.

Great company and very professional, they know what they are building and know how to back it engineering wise. Can't beat this amp for the price.

Rockford puts a smile once again!!!

Written By Joe, IL on Monday, July 14, 2008

Just like the other reviews the amplifier is well UNDER-RATED! Mine tested at 102 watts RMS @ 4 ohms Wow!!! Shop around for four channel amplifiers with this amount of juice, and watch how much of a dent it puts in your wallet.
