About the Rockford Fosgate PPS4-6

John Pollard
Loud and clear
Rockford Fosgate built the PPS4-6 Punch Pro 6-1/2" midrange speaker for people who like their music loud and clear. This highly efficient speaker uses technology developed for arena and stadium systems, so it's able to fill your vehicle with warm midrange detail, regardless of volume. If your system's already strong in the highs and lows, just install a pair of these speakers in your ride and they'll really fill out the sound.

PPS4-6 Punch Pro 6-3/4

Built tough
Each PPS4-6 speaker handles up to 100 watts RMS, while its 4-ohm voice coil shrugs off the high temperatures created by heavy use. A fiber-reinforced paper cone and W-style treated cloth surround keeps the speaker sounding and working great for a long time to come.

Note: This package contains one speaker and one grille. You'll need an external amplifier to drive this speaker properly — an in-dash stereo won't have enough power.

Features

Cone: The PPS4-6's fiber reinforced paper cone is specifically engineered for high SPL (Sound Pressure Level). The W-style surround is treated cloth.

VAST Surround: The Vertical Attach Surround Technique (VAST) increases a speaker's effective radiating cone area without increasing the size of the basket.

FlexFit Basket: The Flex Fit frame utilizes slots (where possible) instead of single screw sized holes; allowing slight adjustment of the speaker when mounted.

IDHS T3 (Inductive Damping Heat Sink): The heat sink secures directly to the top of the magnet structure to improve system efficiency by reducing both distortion and back EMF (Electo-magnetic force).

Terminals: The PPS4-6 features spring post terminals that accommodate speaker wire up to 16 gauge.

Size Classification Note: Some manufacturers, including Rockford Fosgate, call this size speaker a 6½". Because it requires a larger cutout than a standard 6½" speaker, Crutchfield has traditionally referred to this size as a 6¾". Please enter you vehicle information to confirm fit.

Q
will they work if i wire them to my radio? also ordered the radio from crutchfield. how many amps or rms would be ideal for each speaker?
carson  Jan 31, 2024
1 answer
A
Greetings Carson. Thank you for your question. These Rockford Fosgate midrange speakers are more for full system builds. Radio power will not get these to move. They need at a bare minimum 25 watts, radio power is 20-22 at best, and at a high volume level, it an awful lot of distortion. What they would like is 75-125 watts each. They are just midrange so they are not designed to play anything above 5,000 Hz.

I ended up running the Fosgate power T 600 as my amp because I had a pair of Fosgate 6 x 9's in the back as well. It does very well and they sound super clear but don't expect any type of midbass coming from them because there's not much it's more for clarity .Enter an answer to this question.

I used a RF T400X4AD to power a pair of these and a set of T1675-s. I didn't use a hardware x-over. I used the built in software x-over on my pioneer head unit and set it to do a high pass @100ish Hz. I don't suggest anything, but thats how I use mine.

looking for great mid bass 6.5 speakers for 2015 Ram?
bobby  Dec 05, 2021

A
Hey Bobby. Definitely worth the purchase. If you're looking to hear clarity in any music with vocals, these are great. I have them over my head in the roll bar of my Jeep Wrangler. In front, I have components. Just keep in mind that they DO NOT produce bass. But like I said, the vocals will be very clear and sharp.

These need a bigger diameter cutout hole than is available with our mounting brackets and they have a bigger magnet diameter than we recommend installing into your pickup. We are not able to make them fit. We have other model Rockford Fosgate speakers that can fit. I recommend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to get a personal recommendation on speakers that can fit and meet your goals.

What the best frequency for these 150hz or lower or higher??
robert  Jun 23, 2020

A
They are small but handle lower frequencies well. I listen to blues, rock and country, so the music it self does not push the speakers hard. I am pleased with the bass response I am getting. I don not have a formal EQ, just the one in the head unit. Factory head unit Ram

jeffry  Apr 27, 2020

They do not need an amp, but if you want to push them to their potential you might want to get an amp. I stated with just the speakers then a month later when I had more money I bought a small Class D amp. It's loud but not crazy.
george  Apr 26, 2020
A
No. But it will be weak. You need to push it to get the full range out of it. If you dont want to power it just do 2 ways in the power range of your head unit.
tony  Apr 25, 2020
A
All speakers need a power source. These run best at around 100W RMS I think

Yes and no.It will play without one but will not sound quite right since it does not have a tweeter.I hooked mine up to a set of Polk Audio components and they sound amazing
alejandro  Jul 07, 2019
A
You don't need a crossover but remember it only goes to 4kHz so you need a tweeter. The tweeter needs a crossover because low frequencies will wreck the tweeter. This woofer just can't respond to the high frequencies but they won't hurt it. Hope that helps you.

I intend to low pass these around 450Hz...maybe lower, but was wondering what would be ideal for a high pass? I was aiming for 100Hz anyways, which is inside the natural frequency response. These will go in the front and MAYBE rear door of a 2016 Altima. I'm setting up a 3-way setup for the front stage, and want to low pass relatively low to keep the soundstage high.

Before i added tweeters and sub, i ran these full range and was surprised at how high they went. This is billed as a mid but they can function great as a component woofer that have good power handling. I crossed them at 3k with 1 inch silk domes on 125 watts per ch and sounded great. I hope this helps.

Q
Do these produce pretty much just bass or do they have a lot of music/voice? I'm new to aftermarket audio and want bass but I also want music clarity. My 2015 camaro has 2 tweeters and two 6-1/2 speakers in front door and 2 more in the rear deck. I was thinking of installing these woofers in the rear deck. Will I only get bass, or will I have good treble too?

They are midrange speakers not subwoofers so you will get Good clarity out of them , I found the sound the best in a small box also not just in a door
claudia  Feb 17, 2016
A
These are not for bass you get no bass from them these are for strictly voice for clarity no bass they are not subwoofers. They sound great but you are going to need a subwoofer in the trunk or somewhere else for bass
bruce  Feb 17, 2016
A
These will only produce bass. You would need a 2-way, 3-way, or component speaker to get both music and voice.
gregory  Feb 17, 2016

These speakers have excellent midrange quality. You will need tweeters as well. I have a Monte Carlo and a Tahoe. I paired them with the matching tweeters and the sound is very filling.

Q
How much actual music/voice comes through these? I'm new to aftermarket audio and have the conception that subs are just for bass. I want to instal these in my 2015 camaro and was going to do these in the rear deck and 6-1/2 in front doors, or do these in the rear doors as well as adding tweeters to front pillars. Any opinions?

A
Hunter, I'm not a audio guru, so I'll answer your question to the best of my abilities. First off, I've loved Rockford Fosgate products for many years now, I believe they are some of the top of the line products you can install. Unfortunately for myself, I didn't ask any questions about these speakers that I was about to order, so i wondered after installation if I should have gotten the four or eight ohm speakers, and I'm pretty sure now that eight ohm is what I needed but I had already ordered and received the four. The speakers have a really clean and undistorted sound, but I don't have an extra amp installed for them. Unfortunately they are not as loud as the factory speakers but I could be to blame for that. Crutchfield makes their products increasingly easy to install with the wiring and installation plastics that they include in the order. So I recommend Crutchfield and Rockford Fosgate products, but also recommend you do the research to figure out which products will suit your needs the best. Hope this answered your question and also helps you to enjoy the wonderful ride that you purchased.
john m.  Feb 18, 2016

Unless you have anot amp to push these, you would be better served getting something else. With an amp they are pretty good. They are mid range speakers.

Q
Would I need an amp for these to sound GOOD? I have a pioneer head unit with I believe 14 watts RMS or something. I'm not a pro with audio but I like having good sound. The most important thing really is bass, would these have it?
brad  Mar 19, 2015

A
The only real solution for bass are dedicated subwoofers.
edwin  Mar 12, 2017
A
... And no this will not give you bass as it is a mid driver 80-3200 Hz. You'll get more of a kick than a boom. There are 6.5 subwoofers on the market if you are looking for 80 hz and below bass.
juan  Mar 21, 2015

I would suggest running these with the two channel Rockford PBR300x2. I run them in my set up with a 3Sixty.3 Digital Processor set up and they sound great! I would recommend that you purchase the crossover for that is sold separately. the PBR Rockford amp is a perfect match and compact. The amp itself hides right under the seat with room to spare.

christopher  Aug 06, 2014
A
You can use these speakers in factory openings, however the magnet is pretty big on back so may want to check the mounting depth available in the location you are installing if that is a factor. Also, keep in mind this is not full-range speaker. It requires a passive or active crossover which are built into many amps. I installed my PunchPros with a Rockford 3Sixty.3 Digital Sound Processor and PBR 300x2 Rockford amp.
