About the Rockford Fosgate PPS4-8

John Pollard
Loud and clear
Rockford Fosgate built the PPS4-8 Punch Pro 8" midrange speaker for people who like their music loud and clear. This highly efficient speaker uses technology developed for arena and stadium systems, so it's able to fill your vehicle with warm midrange detail, regardless of volume. If your system's already strong in the highs and lows, just install a pair of these speakers in your ride and they'll really fill out the sound.

PPS4-8 Punch Pro 8

Built tough
Each PPS4-8 speaker handles up to 125 watts RMS, while its 4-ohm voice coil shrugs off the high temperatures created by heavy use. A fiber-reinforced paper cone and W-style treated cloth surround keeps the speaker sounding and working great for a long time to come.

Note: This package contains one speaker and one grille. You'll need an external amplifier to drive this speaker properly — an in-dash stereo won't have enough power.

Product Research

Features

Cone: The PPS4-8's fiber reinforced paper cone is specifically engineered for high SPL (Sound Pressure Level). The W-style surround is treated cloth.

VAST Surround: The Vertical Attach Surround Technique (VAST) increases a speaker's effective radiating cone area without increasing the size of the basket.

FlexFit Basket: The Flex Fit frame utilizes slots (where possible) instead of single screw sized holes; allowing slight adjustment of the speaker when mounted.

IDHS T3 (Inductive Damping Heat Sink): The heat sink secures directly to the top of the magnet structure to improve system efficiency by reducing both distortion and back EMF (Electo-magnetic force).

Terminals: The PPS4-8 features spring post terminals that accommodate speaker wire up to 16 gauge.

Q
Does this need a crossover to protect it from frequencies over the 5000hz its rated for?
allen  Apr 26, 2021
2 answers
A
Yes, it does need a crossover and it also needs an external amp to drive the speaker properly.
allison  May 18, 2021 (Staff)
A
Yes. Although, the word "protect" may be a slight exaggeration. I would have to believe that this unit could except the higher frequencies contained in a full-range signal, but would not allow for accurate reproduction of them. In turn, hindering the the frequencies it is intended to optimize. In other words: It would sound like crap splatter.

Q
What's the best amp for 2 of these in a 2006 mustang?

Wondering what is the best cubicFT for a sealed box for this speaker?
robertt  Dec 17, 2019

A
This Pro loudspeaker is a midrange speaker. Not midbass. Great sound for highs, not lows or midbass. Sealed box wouldn't make a difference in sound, as far as for any bass.

Hello, This was used in a 2005 Ford Expedition. We just replaced the factory sub with this Rockford speaker. It was in the factory enclosure so I'm not sure about exact cubic feet unless Ford has that information listed somewhere. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Q
looking to buy a system for my 2009 corvette. It has the Bose system. The door has an 8" subwoofer (removing) and most people put 6" speakers in place and a sub in the hatch. My question is am I better of trying to mate this 8" with a crossover and tweeter and subs or stick with a good component 6?

Q
Should these be paired with a tweeter? Or do they give off enough highs with just this speaker?
kenny  May 29, 2018
2 answers
A
I'm not an expert, but I bought this speaker to help fill in the low end. So I would say to pair it with a tweeter. I hope this helps you.
fred  Jun 05, 2018
A
This is perfect with the PPT tweeter. The speaker will sound good alone, just loud, but with the tweeter it will sould extremely loud and amazing.
harrison  Jun 05, 2018
Q
Would it be a good idea to use these as my two rear mids? Or are they better suited as a sub?
joshua  Sep 09, 2017

A
Use these as rear mids. They give great highs, loud, but make sure you have a high end front stage so you get the most accurate sound possible without the rear mids taking up the stage.
harrison  Jun 05, 2018
A
They should be perfect for mids. I don't think they would make good subs at all. It's a great sounding speaker though.
blake  Sep 09, 2017
A
it better use like rear mids

Yes, it make great bass. I use this sub in a ported box with a 400 amp and it sounds great.

It worked for me in my Ford Expedition and i am using the amp that came O E M with the vehicle. Now some factors you might consider is the price. There are certainly different options and applications. I would certainly check a few others before making a decision.

Q
What's the difference between the 8ohm speaker and the 4 ohm? I want to swap out my Polk Audio speakers for the Rockford Fosgate PPS8-8 or PPS4-8 I have the alpine MRV-F300 powering Polk audio db6501 in the front with dxi6501 in the back . JL audio HO110RG-w3v3 with alpine MRX-M55 amp . Can the Alpine MRV-F300 power the Rockford Fosgate's
ray  Aug 05, 2014
1 answer
A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The difference is resistance to power; the 4 ohm speaker has half the resistance to power than the 8 ohm speaker. This means that since the customer has the Alpine MRV-F300 which is rated out 50 watts RMS at 4 ohms, at 8 ohms the speaker would have more resistance and only be able to use 25 watts RMS from the amp. So more power is better is always better but especially in this scenario. The customer would be better suited to go with the 4 ohm version of the speaker. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
Will these get the deep low notes in something like a DUBSTEP song or electronic song? Same with the high pitch sounds like a high hat?
shahoud  Aug 02, 2014

These are Midrange Pro speakers, not used for midbass or low end. Great for electrified highs!!!
harrison  Dec 17, 2019

I have both of mine hooked up to a single Kenwood 350W amp. These are the heart and soul of my sound system, they fill in where I never thought imaginable. I did make my own box to house them in because I put them directly in the middle of my van between the rear seats so the box is only 22Lx9Hx9W and make sure to use some good MDF board or you'll blow it apart. These are basically mid-range and great at that, if your looking for deep bass, go subwoofer. If you want the highs go with a set of component speakers(6x8 or6x9 plus tweeter) a good value for overall sound.
