Enclosed Subwoofers 101

An enclosed subwoofer is a box with a subwoofer already installed. The advantage to buying an enclosed sub is that the manufacturer made the sub, then designed and built the box as a perfect match, so you'll get the best possible performance. Every enclosed sub has a maximum RMS power handling rating, so pair it with an amp with a similar RMS power rating to get the best performance.

Not bad for a single 10"

I added a PPI Ion 640.5 amp [60x4 + 200 watts to mono sub channel (all 4ohm ratings)] to the factory 2016 Toyota Camry head unit. I also replaced the factory speakers with 4 RF 6x9's and a pair of RF 3.5 in dash. It sounded pretty amazing. People couldn't believe I only had $220 in all the speakers, and a $140 amp.

But the more at listened to it on the road, the more I wanted more bass. The Prime R1 seemed like it was straining...especially on modern recordings of pop songs. It sounded a little warm, almost like the cabinet was too big for the driver---sort of under-damped. I ordered the next one up 2 10" so I could present a 2 ohm load to the amp (sub channel rated for 350w at 2 ohms). It sounded better, but required a lot of tweaking depending on the material I was listening to. Jazz, classic rock...excellent. Modern recordings with sustained deep bass notes? Uh, not so good. best $87 10" sub in an enclosure I ever heard though.

Pros: A very good value. Decent sound, though unremarkable. What do you expect for $87?! Typical, reliable Crutchfield delivery.

Cons: A little 'wompy' sounding....too warm. Peaky response at certain frequencies in my car. Required more 'fiddling' between songs than I have had with other subs.

Nice product

Paired this sub to the Rockford Fosgate Punch P300X1 amp and it can hit hard. I have it in the back of my Scion tC and it sounds great. It delivers nice solid, crisp bass rather than the booming, reverberating bass from ported enclosures. I was a little torn deciding between a ported or sealed enclosure since I listen to a variety of music but mostly rap and electronic/synthetic music. I couldn't be happier with my decision on this sealed enclosure.

Pros: everything besides con

Cons: no grill

I have had 12's that didn't produce frequencies as low as thus 10. Usually to produce low notes you get some muddieness. This 10 is tight and clear!

Pros: Size, bass response, frequency range

Cons:

  • Height: 12-1/8"
  • Depth (base): 12-1/8" (12-7/8" including the subwoofer)
  • Depth (top): 7-1/8" (7-7/8" including the subwoofer)
