Our take on the Rockford Fosgate R1200-1D

Rockford Fosgate packs more power per square inch into their Prime Class D amps than almost any other amplifier made, so you can put more music power in your vehicle's limited space. Your bass will hit loud and clear with one of these reliable and cool-running amps. The versatile R1200-1D puts out 600 watts RMS to a 4-ohm sub, but will crank out 1,200 watts RMS when it's running a 1-ohm subwoofer setup.

Clean power, extensive controls
Rockford Fosgate designed this Prime amp to deliver Power Output Without Excessive Regulation (POWER), which means it'll respond quickly to the peak demands that you may throw at your system. Low-pass and subsonic filters, along with Rockford Fosgate's famous Punch bass boost, let you tune your subs for maximum performance, so your driver's seat will become your favorite place to pick up the beat. And, speaking of the driver's seat, you can hook up an optional wired remote knob to get fingertip control over this amp's bass impact.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

She's a Beast that seems to have power for days. It pushes my twin Kicker Comp RT's hard. Super easy to tune to your preferred bass response. I am very pleased so far. I have it mounted between the subs behind the rear seat of my Tacoma double cab and it runs very cool. I've taken a 1.5 hour trip running it pretty hard the whole time and was really surprised when I got out how cool it was. Great Buy.

Pros: Price Power Controls and Crossover

Cons: Non So Far

Awesome amp!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome amp. The birth certificate shows my amp making 1300 watts rms; how cool is that! 100 watts rms extra for free. I have this amp hooked up using 4 gauge wiring to a 12 inch subwoofer in a ported box; it gets incredibly loud with plenty more left. There are other cheaper amps that claim similar output to this one; don't believe it for a second; they are cheaper for a reason. I am guilty of purchasing those amps. Never again. Thanks again Crutchfield; your customer service, technical support, and return policies are the envy of other Internet sellers.

Pros: Great amp for its price. Super powerful Compact sizing Easy to use

Cons: Wished I would have purchased it before.

Total Powerhouse

The amp, even at 2 ohms, is rocking the heck out of my two 12" P3's. Afraid to see it at 1ohm! Great buy.

Pros: Powerhouse, Great SQ, Highly Efficient

Cons: Gets fairly warm quickly

Upon deciding I was going to install a complete RF system, the first factor was above all else, clear, crisp sound. I have this R1200-1D pushing 2 Rockford Fosgate P3 12" subs. Having the right equipment, such as the Rockford Fosgate 3Sixty.3 signal Processor with the R1200-1D turns this meek little entry-level amp into a purebred BEAST! As I mentioned prior, great sound quality is a MUST. The R1200-1D has managed to deliver the BEST quality sound out of my system to date. I am 44 yrs young, and have been installing high-end systems for over 20 years. For the money, the R1200-1D cannot be beat!

Pros: small footprint, but huge sound.

Cons: No internal fuses. Design leaves something to be desired in the fact that you can see all wires leading in & out of unit. Personally, I feel they could've put more thought into designing a plate to conceal wires.

great

great sub, clear and delivers way more than enough power to my 10 inch JL w6.WAY loud and sounds great!

Pros: somewhat compact, doesn't overheat on me, clear sound, tons of power

Cons: none.

Bought this amp to power a Kicker CVT-10 Shallow mount sub in my F-150 Supercrew and it does an outstanding job. Powerfull Amp yet very clear sound. Makes my one 10 hit so hard it sound like two 10's. Well worth the money.

Pros: Size, very small yet a ton of power. Doesn't get very warm when pushing it hard.

Cons:

Overall Great

I just bought this amp a few days ago and so far i've enjoyed it. With this amp and a 12' alpine it seems to hit very hard but at the same time very clear and consistent

Pros: Great control of the subs and sounds great

Cons: No fuse in the actual amp itself. I always love to have a fuse at the amp and 2 in the middle

Features

Overview: The Rockford Fosgate Prime R1200-1D is a mono Class D amplifier. It is optimized to power subwoofers, and is 1-ohm stable. The Class D design is very efficient with a cast aluminum heatsink to keep it in a small footprint. The amplifier has 85% average efficiency at 4-ohms or 2-ohms, and 80% at 1-ohm.

CEA 2006 Compliant: The R1200-1D's power ratings are measured according to the strict standards dictated by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards allow you to accurately compare the rated power output of all CEA 2006-compliant amplifiers, even different brands. Manufacturers who adhere to the standards can display the CEA 2006 logo on their products and packaging. The RMS power output is as follows (measured with a 14.4 volt input, <1% THD+N, 20 Hz-250 Hz):

  • 4-Ohm: 400 watts x 1
  • 2-Ohm: 800 watts x 1
  • 1-Ohm: 1200 watts x 1

LED Indicator: The amplifier is equipped with a top-mounted LED indicator which illuminates blue when the unit is turned on. The LED illuminates red when a protection circuit engages (short circuit or too low an impedance is detected at the speaker connections). The amplifier automatically turns off if this occurs.

Mounting: The amplifier can be mounted vertically, horizontally, or inverted using the supplied mounting screws; horizontal mounting (right side up) will provide the best cooling.

Controls

Amp Controls: The R1200-1D has the following top-mounted controls:

  • Gain Control: a rotary gain control that can be adjusted from 1 to 11
  • Low Pass Filter: a 12 dB/octave Butterworth low pass filter with a crossover point variable from 50 Hz to 250 Hz
  • Infrasonic Filter: a variable 15-40Hz, 12 dB/octave infrasonic filter designed to prevent frequencies below the audio range from being applied to the subwoofer
  • Punch EQ: a rotary bass boost control, centered at 45 Hz, from 0 dB to +18 dB

Remote Punch Level Control: The amplifier includes a wired Remote Punch Level Control, which is linked to the gain control of the amplifier. The module allows you to remotely control the output level of the amplifier from the dash or center console of your vehicle. The Remote Punch Level Control features a rotary dial, and comes with mounting hardware and a 16.5' connector cable.

Connections

Terminals: The amplifier features heavy duty, nickel-plated set-screw terminals. The set screws can be tightened or loosened with the supplied 3mm Allen wrench. The terminals include:

  • Power/Ground: will accommodate up to 4-gauge wire
  • Remote Turn-On: will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire
  • Speaker Terminals: will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. Two Positive (+) and Negative (-) terminals are provided for installation flexibility. Both terminals are wired in parallel internally.

Fuses: The amplifier does not have on-board fuses. A 100A fuse should be placed on the power wire within 18" of the battery.

RCA Input Jack: The RCA input jacks are nickel-plated to resist signal degradation caused by corrosion.

RCA Pass-Thru Jacks: The nickel-plated RCA pass-thru jack provides a convenient source for daisy-chaining an additional amplifier without running an extra set of RCA cables from the front of the vehicle to the amplifier location.

Why did you buy this?

Excellent Amplifier that puts out what it claims. Decently inexpensive but does not boast bogus wattage claims. I would highly recommend this for anyone with a small to midsize system. Although I am about to out grow it, I have envisioned running two of these. I will comment again if I end up going that route. [ Elliot  May 26, 2016 ]

i would go with 2 kickers or 2 Rockford fosgate p2 also make sure the subs can handle the rms cause they burn out really fast if they are getting to much power [ Dustin  Feb 08, 2016 ]
Wired down to 1ohm? Sounds like you sent too much power to your sub. What was the sub RMS rating? [ William  Feb 06, 2016 ]
well i run the 1ohm fosgate sub 12'' 600w rms the trick is you have to set the gain properly if you don't it will fry it.. lets say your sub took 600w rms ,and that equated to 30v which it doesn't, after a bunch of math then you have to set your gain on your amp playing a 50 hrz tone just before clipping your max volume, then adj your gain to 30 volts with a volt meter, or you risk burning all subs up! due to over voltage their are some youtube videos you can find on setting the gain this way . im not worried about it, i don't run mine that hard good luck [ justin  Feb 06, 2016 ]
I matched my R1200-1D with 2 fockford P2D4-12's. I also have them wired to 1 ohm. Only have had them for a little over a month and the BEAT! U need to match your amps RMS wattage to ur subs. Your amp has 1200 watts RMS at 1 ohm so your subs should have no less than 800 watts RMS together. An amp having a little extra power is a good thing. If u are running just 1 sub then it should have at least 800 watts RMS by itself. Also turn down your gain some. I wouldn't recommend having it over 3 or 4. [ Spencer  Feb 05, 2016 ]
I have 2 rockford fosgate p2 wired at 1 ohm gain set around 7 an it sounds amazing couldnt ask for a better setup [ Ryan  Feb 05, 2016 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The R1200-1 is a single channel amp. With a 4-ohm DVC subwoofer you would be getting 800 watts RMS (you would wire the voice coils in parallel for a 2-ohm load). While this will work, it's not an ideal match for the sub you described. You can find out more info on matching subs and amps by checking out some of our articles here: http://www.crutchfield.com/lg_100/Car-Amplifiers-How-To-FAQ-and-Shopping-Guides.html If you get a chance have a quick call or chat with an Advisor. I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Yes, it is 1 ohm stable. It will be putting out 1200W RMS to a 1 ohm load. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Jul 06, 2015 ]  Staff

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: If your subs are 1000 watts RMS apiece that amplifier isn't enough power. You would only get 400 watts RMS per sub when presenting the amplifier with a 2-ohm load. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Jun 25, 2014 ]  Staff
