Better components give you better detail

The Prime R165-S 6-1/2" component speaker system sports stiff mica-injected 6-1/2" polypropylene woofers that deliver strong drums and bass, along with clean reproduction of the midrange frequencies. The separate Mylar tweeters add the excitement of strong high-frequency response to your music without a trace of harshness. Built-in crossover networks divide the frequencies going to each driver, so all your music plays faithfully. Grilles are included.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Features

Mica Injected Polypropylene Woofers: The woofer cones are mica injected polypropylene. This material is light weight and rigid for decreased distortion and improved bass response.

Tweeter: The 1/2" Mylar tweeters are a balanced dome design. A semi-dome tweeter has a dome placed inside a cone. Balanced dome tweeters are semi-dome tweeters with equal reproduction area given the cone and dome portions of the tweeter. Out of the box, the tweeters are mounted in the flush mount housings. An angled surface mount housing is also included, and the back of the the flush mount housing and the top of the angled surface mount housing are combined to make the (non-angled) surface mount housing. Once mounted, the tweeters swivel so you can direct them toward the listening positions.

Tweeter Dimensions:

Frame Diameter Frame Width Frame Depth Cutout Diameter Mounting Height Mounting Depth
Flush Mount 2.125" N/A N/A 1.83" 0.34" 0.75"
Surface Mount 1.815" N/A N/A N/A 1.1" 0.66" (Screw Depth)
Angled Surface Mount N/A 1.815" 1.845" N/A 1.661" 0.59" (Screw Depth)

Crossovers: A 6 dB/octave high-pass crossover is integrated into the case of each tweeter. The woofers have two spades on each terminal; the wire from the tweeter, as well as the wire from the source are connected there.

Q
Will the tweeters fit in the stock position in my 2005 gmc sierra?
zander  Mar 11, 2024
1 answer
A
You will need to do some modification to install the Rockford Fosgate R165-S tweeters into the factory tweeter locations on your 2005 GMC Sierra, Zander. Trimming the tweeter mount location in the A-pillar and affixing with hot glue is a good move. The Rockford Fosgate R165-S tweeters contain the crossover built-in, so wiring them up in your install is easier than with components that use a box-style external crossover.

Q
Regarding a 23 Ram Promaster, is it plug and play, as there are separate woofer and tweeter housings. Or will I have to add crossovers?
clarke  Feb 11, 2024
1 answer
A
Greetings Clarke. Thank you for your question. These speakers are more universal. They can fit in many vehicles with adapter brackets and wire adapters. Purchased thru us you will receive adapters to wire, and mount the 6.5 inch woofer, but the tweeter is not the same size as the factory tweeter, so you will need to fabricate an adapter to install it. The crossovers are built into the cases of the tweeters, similar to the factory tweeters in the 2023 Promaster.

Q
Can I use the tweeters to replace my factory dash tweeters on a 2006 Nissan Xterra ?
thomas o.  Dec 28, 2023
1 answer
A
We do have mounting brackets to help install the tweeters in a component speaker system like this Rockford Fosgate into the dash. There may be other gear needed to make them run and play better than the stock speakers and we have advisors that can be reached by calling 1-800-324-9695 who can check compatibility

Q
Rockford Fosgate R165-S will the tweeters fit in the corner dash on my 2004 Honda Accord or will it require cutting?
shawn  Dec 15, 2023
1 answer
A
The factory dash speaker locations in the 2004 Honda Accord are large enough to accommodate the tweeters from this speaker set. However, we do not have any brackets or harnesses to help with installation. It will be necessary to fashion your own simple mounting bracket and splice/tap into the factory speaker wires.
zachary  Dec 15, 2023 (Staff)
Q
Could I just keep my factory tweeters and not use the tweeters that come with these?
miniabyss  Sep 29, 2023
1 answer
A
You could technically do this, yes. There shouldn't be any effect on the performance of the woofers in this set if you were to continue using the factory tweeters.
zachary  Sep 29, 2023 (Staff)
Q
2007 trailblazer. It says it doesn't need the speaker adapters/brackets but every where else says yes I do. I'm so confused and I dont want to spend no extra money where I don't have to. Will they fit without the brackets?
big rob  Jun 22, 2023
1 answer
A
In this case, you may use the factory bracket to mount the speakers. Although we do have the Scosche SAC-656 bracket for this vehicle, these speakers are too large to fit into the bracket anyways.
zachary  Jun 22, 2023 (Staff)
Q
Since the tweeters arenâ??t attached to the speaker itself could I use it in the corners on my dash instead of buying separate tweeters for corner dash tweeters on a 2000 Honda accord ex sedan?
brandon  Mar 21, 2023
1 answer
A
Yes, this component set is designed to be installed exactly the way you described. Components are designed to give you a better sound stage and separation of your highs from your lows. Ideally the tweeter is positioned higher in the door or in the corner dash so that you can hear treble and vocals better. Unfortunately it looks like it will be difficult to install tweeters in the dash location in this car unless you're willing to try to modify the cutout diameter in the dash location. We're not showing any tweeters that will physically fit the corner dash without modification. If you're not looking to do any type of modifying you may want to stay with a 2 way design speaker that has the tweeter built on top of the woofer. If you need help figuring out what other options would work best for your car give us a call at 1-800-324-9695 and we'll be happy to help you find another solution!

Q
Would these speakers be a good match for an 04 Mustang GT convertible?
perry l  Mar 18, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings P Clark, and thank you for your question. The Rockford Fosgate R165-s can fit in the rear panels of your Mustang. Technically with our adapter brackets you can install most 5.25 inch round speakers, but I see nothing holding up installing these up front with adapter brackets.

Q
What amplifier would you recommend with these speakers?
daniel  Jun 28, 2022
1 answer
A
Great question, Daniel! These Rockford Fosgate R165-s Prime Series 6 1/2 components are rated for a max of 40 watts RMS. This means we can safely use amps that deliver around 45-50 watts RMS, and try to not go over that mark. The Rockford Fosgate Punch PBR400X4D I've put in the link below is a great choice, perfect on the wattage! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_575PBR4004/Rockford-Fosgate-Punch-PBR400X4D.html?tp=115

Q
I have a pioneer head unit in an 08 GMC Sierra and I have replaced the front speakers and tweeters with Rockford Fosgate R165-S. When the tweeters are hooked up and you go over 16 on the volume the head unit will turn off and reboot. What in the tweets could be causing this issue? I tried installing an amp and running it off of the rca cables. Still shuts down over 16
rockingta  May 02, 2022
1 answer
A
I have not run the tweeters yet so I have not experienced that issue. However, I have been doing a lot of research for the system I want to put in my 70 Beetle. One of the things I have heard is that a crossover needs to be used with a tweeter. Check Car Audio Fabrication on youtube.

Q
"2 Angled surface mounting tweeter housings" What "specifically' does this mean? Are we drilling a hole for a small screw & wiring to go through and attach the surface housing? I want details on the process to install the "surface mount housing."
john  Mar 30, 2022
1 answer
A
No, as I recall, Its an outer bezel that the tweeter body sits in. This allows it to "float" giving it some directional movement.. Its optional if I remember correctly. I only used them because my A pilar was too dhallow for the tweeter without them
joshua  Apr 03, 2022
Q
"The tweeters should be connected to the mids." Are the mids the 6 1/2 woofers it comes with? If so there will be four wire connectors to front door woofers. Two for the woofers and two going to the tweeters.
larry  Sep 14, 2021
1 answer
A
The included 6-1/2" drivers (manual calls them Mid-range/woofers) are the ones with the terminals for connecting the tweeter wiring.

Q
Will these speakers work without an amp? And if an amp is needed, what kind should I get?
evan  May 23, 2021
2 answers
A
Yes they will work without an amp.
chris  May 25, 2021
A
They'll work without an amp. Now with stereos they'll sound pretty decent but amps always help with more tuning and getting the most out of the speakers. I got these and installed on my 97 f350 and were night and day from stock speakers to these. And as far as amps go all depends on how many speakers your adding to them and how much your wanting to push though it.

Q
Says tweeter will fit with modifications. On a 98 Chevy Silverado any idea what those mods might be? Im not excited about the thought of cutting up my door panels.
michael keith  May 02, 2021
1 answer
A
We have not developed a step-by-step procedure for installing a tweeter such as this one. There is more than enough room for the new tweeter as it is smaller than the old one so custom making a mounting bracket must happen to help hold it in the doors and we think a pair of these with glue/silicon should do the trick: www.crutchfield.com/p_120BKSTRAP/item.html

Q
I'm looking to buy for a 2008 Kia Sorento, will these fit in the car or will I need anything to hook it up?
michelle  Mar 03, 2021
3 answers
A
You will need adapters and speaker pig tails. You can find them on the website.
benny  Mar 04, 2021
A
I'm not sure about your exact car. But if it says they are the correct size round than you won't have any problem with the depth. They do come with and adapter bracket if I remember correctly. These fit in the door of a Honda Prelude which had the least amount of depth as I have ever had to work with in a door. Hope this helps some. It's a nice set of speakers and you should enjoy.
daniel  Mar 03, 2021
A
According to their page yes. For the lower front door and rear door. However these have terrible sound quality. It most likely is worse than your stock speakers. I would shy away from these. I bought them installed them checked them out. Uninstalled them and returned.

It should flush mount, you will remove the door panel to remove your old speaker, it should install back into the same spot. I have a 2014 fiesta, and it fit just fine.

The crossover for these speakers is built into the wiring between the woofer and tweeter.

Q
2002 Chevrolet Silverado. Can I plug the tweeters into the factory wiring harness or do I have to run them into the back of the woofer? I know there are connectors on the back of the woofer for the tweeters but I would much rather be able to unplug them from the factory harness versus having to take both tweeter and woofer out when removing the door panel from the truck.
lawrence  Jul 14, 2020
1 answer
A
Not 100% sure on your model. But on mine my tweeters are in the dash. I plugged mine directly into the mid range and extended wiring up to dash. So if I have to remove mine I just unplug from mid. Also I believe its a good idea to plug into the mid for the same front right left balance??

The crossovers for these speakers are built into each driver so it is possible that you can use the stock wiring at each location as long as there are no factory crossovers getting in the way. If you are not sure about your vehicle, I'd recommend contacting an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 to check

Daniel, to determine what wiring harness ( if available) is right for your vehicle, I would reach out to one of our advisors, as if a harness is available, we would need to qualify the specific year, make, model, and trim. https://www.crutchfield.com/support/ContactUs.aspx

Q
I have a 2004 Tundra with the factory JBL system. I am planning on also purchasing the Pioneer AVIC-5201NEX receiver. Will the tweeters in this system fit in the factory location or does "surface mount tweeter" mean just that - I must surface mount the tweeters and, somehow, bypass those that are in the door?
joel  Aug 01, 2019
1 answer
A
These will not fit into your factory locations. you would be replacing the stock one in the system, and these would need to be surface mounted or your would have to make significant modifications to fit the in your door/panel.

I have a 2002 XJ Sport. Recently bought these speakers. Haven't installed them. I'm wanting to use the Alpine-KTP445U on my stock headunit. Is it worth running these speakers on that amp? Or is it a waste to amp these up? I'm not trying to go all out on a stereo upgrade. Just an improvement on my stock setup. I mostly listen to rap and trance in my car.
jose  Jun 02, 2019
1 answer
A
These Rockford's are a sensitive speaker, so stock stereo power will drive them, but it's never a bad idea to add an amp to any set of speakers. The Alpine KTP445U is a great amp to go with in this application. You're only going to be overpowering them very slightly, so no harm in using that amp!

Q
I have a 2 channel amp rated at 80 x 2 RMS, is it too much for my RF R165-S (40 RMS)?
leeroy  Apr 04, 2019
2 answers
A
You can but you will burn them out if you decide to crank up the volume. I would recommend to have speakers that take more watts than the amp, just my opinion. That way you know for sure you won't blow out the speakers.
luis  Apr 17, 2019
A
Should be fine. It is always to have extra power and reduce the gain at the amp. Usually they sound better when they are not push to the limit ( both amps and speakers). The speakers are 80 Watts peak

I am not sure, Teck services should be able to help you with that answer. I installed them in my wife's 2006 Honda Pilot and they work and sound Great! there is some modifications that you might have to do, I had to do some on mine but nothing you wouldn't be able to do I am sure.
herbert  Mar 05, 2019
A
It depends if yours has the pillar tweeters or not. You can fit 6.5 or a 6x9 in your vehicle so you should be all set. Now with your head unit it may not be the best unit out there but it will work. Just do not crank it up to high because you will get distortion. I would recommend a amp for you in car speakers to help or a stronger head unit.
daniel  Mar 05, 2019
Q
I'm looking at putting these in the door of my Silverado. What ohm rating am I going to be looking for? I wanted to run a 4 ohm 4 channel amplifier, and power 2 8" mid bass speakers off of the same 4 channel amp.
ross  Apr 02, 2018
1 answer
A
The Rockford Fosgate Prime R165-S speakers are conventional 4 Ohm impedance so, when connected to an external amplifier, you can expect to get the amp's rated output for 4 Ohms. There are in line cross overs in the wiring. Great for plug and play. Good if you have little space for an active crossover.

These speakers can definitely work with the power of your Pioneer radio because they can handle 2-40 watts RMS and that Pioneer outputs 14 watts RMS for each. You might consider calling an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 to discuss your listening preferences and get a personal recommendation on this match. I don't know if it will fit your vehicle or how they will sound with the pioneer deck, but I have them in my 2011 Jeep Wrangler with a Kenwood deck and they sound great, way better then stock. Real crisp, real clean, I put MTXs in my 2004 Chevy Silverado, which are great, but kind of wish I would have put these in them. Great speaker.

I want to install these in my rear doors and there isn't a place for the tweeters, so can I leave them off?
jeremiah s  Apr 07, 2017

A
If you intend to leave the tweeters off of these because there isn't a place for them, you would be better off just going with coaxial speakers. That way you won't lose the frequencies above 3000 Hertz.
chris  Jul 25, 2022
A
Technically I think so, but that's all your high end / vocals. So you will just have a lot of mid-tones and bass if you leave them out. You should look at getting a 2 or 3 way speaker that fits your rear door. There should be lots.
scott  Apr 26, 2017

Sure, but it would be a crime to do so! Plan it out just a bit more, I've never heard of someone regretting extra work for tweeters!

Jeremiah, I installed my set in a 2002 GMC Seirra Pickup in the front doors. My original setup included separate tweeters, so it wasn't necessary to leave them out. But, I don't see why you couldn't lead them out. You will lose some high end response however.
david  Apr 07, 2017
A
Better sound with them. I didn't have a factory spot either, so made one to fit. If you can't find a spot, go without the tweeter
jay  Apr 07, 2017

Yes you can. But will only have mid level sound.

Q
I have a 2010 Tundra and I want to replace the rear door speakers with these. Do I need to replace the front dash tweeters with the tweeters in this set or can I leave them off?

Jeremiah, I installed the speakers in 1967 F100 and used the retro housings for them, because there was just one speaker in dash. The speakers sound great so I would say use the tweeters. my opinion Tim

Well I left mine off and kept he factory ones. They say I should have replaced them but I didn't. It does sound a little better but I did the rear speakers also. Even with all the door speakers replaced, there was not a huge improvement so do not expect it. The factory radio, if that is what you have is detuned and it sucks. If you you want better quality plan on replacing the head unit. There is another company called Taco Tunes that makes a tuner and amp that plugs into the factory head unit if that is what you want. I want to give it a try but just haven't had the time to deal with it.

Is there away to bypass the hpf and use the head unit hpl? If not what would the radios crossover setting be so it would even out and not damage the speakers ?

I was not happy with the range on these speakers. I do not think they have the capabilities you are looking for. I would suggest going higher end.

I have a 2009 hyundai sonata with the infinity system. Can i connect the tweeters directly to the stock tweeter connectors or will they have to be connected to the woofer?
alex  Mar 20, 2017
2 answers
A
You can connect them directly, but you take a chance on mismatched power levels and mismatched crossover slopes, as well as the chance that the factory stereo has pre-equalized the sound to the tweeters. It'll work but your'e better off hooking up these speakers as intended.
gregory  Mar 20, 2017

I know the stock wiring will work fine, but I don't know about the "connectors".

Do these come with external crossovers or are they built in like the Rockford Fosgate P16-S's?
jamie  Dec 09, 2016

No there is no crossover supplied. The Prime series is primarily for factory replacement and no other upgrades. They sound good at low wattage, but if you're adding an amplifier I would go with something in The Punch or Power series. Both of which come with a passive crossover.
zachary c.  Dec 09, 2016
A
They are built in
gaspar  Dec 09, 2016
A
There is no external crossover. Aso far as I know, nothing is built into these speakers either. I had them in my Jeep, running off a Kenwood deck, and it was adequate at best. If you use an amp they'll probably be good. Jeeps have terrible acoustics anyway
joseph  Dec 09, 2016
A
The crossovers are built in.
jeff  Dec 09, 2016

It is only a capacitor for the tweeter. Not a separate crossover.

Q
I have a 2009 toyota rav4 without the JBL sysytem. If I buy these to replace my front door speakers and tweeter, do I need a new crossover, or is there one already in my car?
benjamin  Oct 17, 2016
1 answer
A
The factory door woofers and tweeters are wired in parallel so, if you plan to power the speakers with the stock wattage, you'll need to connect the factory tweeter's input & output leads together in order for the woofer to still get the power & signal. As a result, you will want to use the crossovers provided with the components and run new wire from it's outputs to the separate midbass and tweeters. I hope that helps. Q
Will these need to be custom installed in a 2007 Chrysler 300 C? What's the difference between a component system and the 3 Way speaker?
tara  Aug 04, 2016
3 answers
A
A component system has a separate tweeter and woofer, so you get 4 independant speekers. Where a 3-way has the the tweeter, crossover and woofer built into one unit, so only two assembled speakers will come in the box.
zachary c.  Dec 09, 2016
A
Alright Tara, not sure about the install, usually the Crutchfield site will tell you what you need for install in your car when you select it. As for the difference between 3-way and component; the major difference is assembly. A component speaker set has and mid range woofer and separate high pass filter, and the high range tweeter. If your powering the speakers with a separate amplifier I 100% recommend the component setup. If you just want beetle than stock speakers I would stick with a normal 3way. Install will be easier with the 3way.

As long as your speaker door holes are for the size of speaker you should be fine. Might need to get wire connectors from wires in door and cut the custom fitting on your speakers came with your 300C. Component system and 3 way...3 way has highs, mids and subwoofer...so basically your treble, mid-range and bass all in one speaker...component has speakers in the door and then your tweeters as well...I would prefer the 3 way speaker for best sound....hope this helped somewhat, have a good day!!!

Q
Are the foam surrounds durable as compared to rubber surrounds?
joeyl  Nov 22, 2015
2 answers
A
No! Foam will never be as durable as Rubber. Now with that said, will the foam outlast the speakers life, or the usefulness of the speaker...probably. If you plan on keeping your car forever, live in very dry hot environments and listen to EDM I'd say go for the rubber. If you listen to talk radio, don't plan on keeping your car for more than 5 years and live next to the beach, foam will be fine. As for sound, that is subjective. Some people have seen UFO's too.
matthew  May 28, 2016

Yes I think they are just as durable. I also think the sound better. Hope this helps you out. I have had mine for about two years and I love them. I would choose anything beside Rockford. Good luck

Not required but can be helpful. Have these in the rear of my Tundra and they sound great mated to an aftermarket head unit. Granted its getting 30 RMS. I would say you'd be fine as long as the head unit is supplying >20 watts RMS. YMMV and hope that helps.
gregory  May 29, 2015

Depends on your head unit. You need to make sure the speakers impedance matches. Also how many watts your stereo has to push them. I didn't need an amplifier and mine sound awesome

Hello, I do recommend getting an amp as I installed these without an amp and sure they sound good but you're not using them to their full potential. Also since you have an aftermarket deck they will sound even better with the aftermarket amp. But if you're not going to buy an amp might as well keep the stock speakers since most factory amps only push less then 20 watts also not only will it benefit the speakers it will also benefit the deck.
