Excellent factory replacement

Whether you're building your first system or replacing some burned-out factory speakers, Rockford Fosgate's Prime Series R165X3 6-3/4" speakers offer clean, powerful performance that'll keep you and your friends rockin' as you drive. Plus, Prime speakers are a great way to get Rockford Fosgate sound quality without destroying your bank account.

Rockford Fosgate Prime R165X3 speaker

The R165X3 adds a piezo supertweeter for extra detail.

Better components give you more detail

Each 6-3/4" speaker sports a stiff polypropylene woofer cone that delivers strong drums and bass, along with clean reproduction of the midrange frequencies. The silk dome tweeter and piezo supertweeter add the excitement of strong high-frequency response to your music without a trace of harshness. The built-in crossover network divides the frequencies going to each driver, so all your music plays faithfully. Grilles are included.

Note: Rockford Fosgate describes this model as a 6-1/2" speaker. Most manufacturers designate this same frame size as a 6-3/4" speaker. For simplicity's sake, we list it as a 6-3/4" speaker.

They sound great, I couldn't believe the difference they made. Good sound for a good price.

Nice speakers for price and quality

Written by: Angel from Pasadena, CA on April 17, 2016

2015 Toyota Tacoma
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought for my truck along with bafles to protect them. Bought two pairs for front and back. Back ones went on like butter but the front ones my window hit when rolled all the way down, had to run little spacers so that they wouldn't touch or cause issues. Love the sound and though they won't shatter windows that's not why I purchased them. Bought them to have nice sound on a budget and they certainly deliver.

Pros: Sound quality and features

Cons: Could have better bass but overall not bad

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These sound great, properly equalized. The drivers are larger than 6.5" but fit into 1/2 factory mounts.

Pros: These hit hard (for their size) without distortion even on 14watt RMS. They are only 6.5ish in size but the bass is accurate and the highs aren't harsh. Please give them a few hours or so to let them relax before making up your mind. I opened up my door panels and cut out the plasic grills to get the sound OUT. Factory speakers are a joke compaired to most anything but these look well built and sound really good. There is more surface area than typical 6.5 drivers.

Cons: I cant say much bad about them unless they only last a year. They are sturdy and accurate. I have them in a cargo work truck with tons of road noise. They do need equalizer TLC to sound best.

Speakers arrived as promised and well packaged. It required drilling 4 holes to mount them as the originals were snapped into place. I was glad to purchase the wiring adapter since all I had to do is plug in the new speakers and they worked great. For the price they are much better that the factory. I would definitely recommend them.

Pros: Easy to install and play great

Cons: Had to drill 4 holes to mount

For the price can't complain.

Pros: Not a bad entry level speaker

Cons: The tweets are bright I mean bright I was a little upset, that Cructhfield said they would send all the install gear..... I didn't receive the speaker brackets to make it even easier to install and when I chatted online I was told yeah, you don't need them..... I know I don't need them but it was a major deciding factor of going with Crutchfield.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought two sets of these on special. Crutchfield "stuff for my vehicle" said they wouldn't fit in the rear doors but other sets of the same size speakers would so I gambled and ordered for both anyway. Pleasantly surprised to say they fit with absolutely no issues. Sound quality out of these guys is about a thousand times better than the stock paper cones. Bass hits moderately hard for a 6.5/6.75 inch 3-way speaker, in fact we have rattles in the door that annoy now because these are shaking stuff loose. Highs on these sound great, we have none of the "flatness" mentioned in other reviews. 45RMS/90 watts peak is a lot for the small cabin they went into and they absolutely fill it with sound. Bear in mind that speakers only pound out the sound that is sent to them, so an underpowered or poor quality deck may make these sound worse than the "matched" speakers that came stock. Paired with a Kenwood deck these sound brilliant.

Pros: Great price (on special). Loud. Crisp clear highs, decent lows/bass for their size.

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am kind of blown away as these speakers don't even come close to sounding as good as the 16 year old stock paper coned factory speakers that my truck came with. I was so underwhelmed that I pulled one of the Rockfords and replaced it w/ the factory paper cone speaker and listened to a HUGE variety of music, styles and genres, as well as songs that I had written/engineered/mastered (so I know what I am suposed to be hearing). All the while over a few hour period I was panning left to right to left... and to my amazment the Rockfords had so little low end that I could barley even hear the bass guitar at all in most songs. Also the low end that they did posses was really spiky (sharp, in really narrow frequency pockets: actually more like thin envelopes of unpleasant bass) The high end also had it's own angular coloring. Historically, I have always heard a huge improvement when replacing stock speakers. So this was really strange to me. I expected to at the very least have even a slight improvement. btw I am running an Alpine head unit. I sent the speakers back.

Pros: Brand name reminds me of Jim Rockford

Cons: They sound like angular poo. I really wanted to like them but even my 16 year old son picked the old paper coned factory speaker as sounding better in a blind test.

Cons: Speaker grilles need removed for proper fit.

2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I give them five stars for their price range. These are low-power speakers meant for OEM replacement, running directly from the head unit (no external amplifier). They sound dramatically better than the OEM speakers they replaced. You'll need to make use of the stereo's EQ to (try) to level out the frequency response, as they have a few very hot & cold spots. After EQ, they are quite good.

Pros: They sound great running off the head unit, installation was easy. They're a great speaker for the price.

Cons: Praise is "for the price" - you're not paying a lot, so it's only fair to say they'll probably be better than the speakers the factory inflicted on you.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used to always buy Rockford Fosgate amps and speakers long before the company had been bought out. I wasn't sure if the sound quality would good with these or not. While these speakers would fall short of the some of the systems that I have put together over the years, they are a far better speaker than the price tag would indicate. I installed these in my daily driver in the front pannels and was very impressed with the upgrade over the stock car speakers. Would highly recommed as a cheap upgrade to stock or even for a low budget starter system.

Pros: Good sound for the money.

Cons: The outer lip of the mounting flange could be just a bit wider for the reuse of the factory screws.

Great bargain, great sound - screws too long

Written by: DDGSQRD from Texas on February 7, 2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these on sale for my 2011 Honda Odyssey. The install guidance from Crutchfield helped tremendously; however, the screws the RF provided were too long for the Scosche brackets provided. In order to prevent drilling holes in the metal door, I opted to cut the screws to length with my pneumatic cutoff tool. I then had to taper the ends on my bench grinder so they would go into the brackets. A note about the brackets the clips at the bottom that set into the door are delicate; I broke one off and will now need to use some 3M two-way tape to make sure it stays. My order was shorted some of the electrical connectors, so I could not install the rear doors yet. Will do that soon. The sound quality between the RF and stock is night and day.

Pros: Crutchfield install guidance great; sound quality great.

Cons: screws too long; brackets break easily.

Definitely an upgrade!

For cheaper speakers they can handle some bass.

For the price these can't be beat. Installed in both the rear and front of a 2016 Hyundai Elantra without issues. Reuse the stock speaker mounts! Mine were riveted in and the adapters that came with the speakers would not work with 6.5 inch speakers. They would work with 5.25 inch but if your factory mounts are riveted in it's not worth the trouble of removing them.

Great entry level upgrade

Written by: John D from Ohio on July 6, 2015

Upgraded to these RF in my 95' Legacy Wagon. I'm running 4 tweeters through a custom modded amp (upgraded film and electrolytic caps for improved clarity and more accurate SQ) along with an Alpine R 10" and Kicker L5 12" (have a wider dynamic presence with a 10" and 12"- sounds more natural vs. two 10's or 12's) powered by an old school Sony. High pass was always controlled at HU for doors, which were factory full-range paper cones. At low to middle-low volumes, the RF sound similar to the factory pieces they replaced. Push volume louder and they really wake up. This is where it pays to have 91db SPL as they'll hit higher db with less wattage, which in this case is the Pioneer HU. They stay surprisingly clear until you push them a little too hard, where it induces a ringing effect (around +54 volume with loudness high, SLA +4, etc.) Keeping eyes open for a 4 channel old school SQ amp around 50wpc to get the most of these. People griping about these either have a lousy HU, amp, or don't understand how to properly set them up, are running only 2 of them, etc. etc. They don't make bass. PERIOD. So don't expect that from them. You should set high pass to around 100Hz and HIGHER. You'll get a little tight mid-bass, but nothing more. I have 8Khz at -6, 3Khz around 0, 1.25k +3. My amped tweeters pick up the rest. Excellent buy these RF.

Pros: 91 db SPL helps them get louder with less wattage (wouldn't push them beyond 50w); Clear going loud which is where they shine; Highs are a little bright and artificial IF you crank the 3Khz - 10Khz range up expecting their tweeters to supply only highs, but are OK with secondary amped tweeters; Suggest replacing factory electrolytic cap with a same spec (voltage and capacitance) Elna Silmic II (for more warmth) or Cerafine (more accurate clarity) as they cost $1 each online (reputable outlets)

Cons: NOT bass speakers so get over it. Bass they do make is around 100Hz and higher despite being advertised lower, so set highpass filter to 100Hz or 125 Hz and invest in bass speakers. Highs are OK but overly bright if you set high freq. to far. Suggest lowering high freq. and running secondary tweeters via a small amp. Makes a world of difference. Pushing too hard introduces ringing, meaning you should back off volume a bit. If highpass is ignored and you crank the high freq., it'll hurt sound.

Nice

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got these to replace my blown door speakers in my 2010 Camaro. Once installed, I was slightly dissapointed they are not much of an improvement from OEM. I had to make several calls to Crutchfield CS. Brackets are no where near as thick as OEM, CS told me to cut all the tabs out of the inside of the bracket to make speaker fit. The wiring harness they included would not fit in the OEM harness so they sent an alternate, but they ended up being almost exactly the same and did not fit either. Had to cut small "v's" in their harness to make it squeeze into the OEM. The mounting screws they included were an 1 1/2" too long and hit door opening, had to buy shorter ones at the hardware store, Also used some double sided tape to secure the speaker to the bracket to ensure there was no rattle.

Pros: affordable replacement. quick delivery.

Cons: a lot of modification needed to be done to make work. Had to wait extra time to install, for the replacement harness that didn't work either.Had to get my own screws to clear opening. Not much if any of an upgrade vs OEM.

2014 Toyota Camry
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replace stock rear deck speakers in 2014 Camry. At the same time used RF Prime 169x3 for the doors. Both sets powered by the Alpine Power Pack. I like the sound from the 6x9's , but was unimpressed with the 6.750". They just felt muddled. No clear high, mid, or lows. Felt it was a step down from the fronts. I ended up replacing them with Kicker CS67 6.750" coaxial. Felt more bass response, albeit still nothing like the 6x9's upfront, and clearer highs and mids. I personally fell the the extra $20 is worth it for the kickers. Maybe I had a bad set, who knows.

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: no real clear sound. sounds muddled.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers have a really great balanced sound. They lows are low and highs are high. I believe the mid-range is good too, but it's hard to tell because I installed some Jensen 6 1/2" in the back of my vehicle and they are all high, no mid or low sounds. I wish I would have gone with two more of these, but I tried to save a few bucks with the Jensens which I now regret.

2003 Toyota Matrix
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these to replace the stock front door speakers in my '03 Matrix. At this point the OEM speakers were 12 years old, so they sounded terrible, but the Rockford Fosgate Prime R65X3 are far better than what I remember the stock speakers sounded when new. There is absolutely more bass than before and the tweeters deliver crisp highs. The mid-range required some tweaking with the equalizer, but every car requires some optimization. After drilling out the rivets holding in the stock speakers, the Primes fit perfectly. Crutchfield provided adaptor rings and a wiring harness and everything fit as designed. The screws on the adaptor ring were a bit long, but usable if you take up the space with a few extra washers (pick some up before you begin if you don't have any). I've had them in about 3 weeks now and now that they have broken in they are really beginning to shine. Tempted to replace the rear speakers now!

Pros: Perfect fit. Crutchfield supplied accessories spot on. Sound fantastic

Cons: Adaptor ring mounting screws a bit too long. Nothing serious. Adaptor ring perfect (must knock out tabs on inner ring for speaker to fit-again, no big deal).

Installed these in a 99 Saturn SL with no issue. Dropped right in and no drilling required. Overall, these sound pretty good. The bass is present and the midrange is good, but the highs are sometimes a little unpleasant. This may have more to do with source audio quality and equalizer settings on my head unit, though. For the price, this is a no-brainer, 10x better than stock solution. I should've done it sooner.

Pros: Easy to install, very loud, clear, inexpensive

Cons: None

I purchased these for my son for his birthday. Somehow his 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer was missing the right front speaker when he bought it. I had them sent to him in Kansas and I sent an array of tools he would need. Unfortunately he was not sent an installation sheet. He is not a mechanical person but got it done with minimal drama. All the parts provided made for a seamless installation. He states that they are much louder and clearer than the "speaker" they replace.

Pros: Nice price, good sound, all accessories needed to install properly.

Cons: No instructions sent on how to remove the door panels.

I installed Primes in my last 3 vehicles and was blown away by their performance and range. The R165X3 model has been a serious disappointment. Mid's and lows are non existent and the highs sound like they are coming from an in dash 1 inch tweeter verses an aftermarket semi performance 6.5 inch door speaker. Work Great

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have had these speakers for about 6-7 days and they work great! Put them in the doors of my 98 ext cab silverado when I installed my new head unit(Clarion cz302) and am not sorry for my choice. Had a decent amount of bass for a 6.5" inch speaker out of the box and its improving daily as they break in. Noticed in a few of the previous reviews that some found them to have no bass at all but that's absolutely not the case here. If you keep in mind what these are which is a 6.5" door speaker and not a 12" sub I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. With that being said I'm 45, so earth shattering bass isn't at the top of my list but good clean sound is and that's what I get with these. Tight little thump on the low end, nice crisp mids and highs on the other, couldn't ask for more especially at this price! These guys really seem to wake up when you lean on them with a little bit of volume so can't wait to get the Clarion xc1410 amp put in when it gets here along with the RF Punch 6x9's that are on the way as I write this. Will update when everything is in and going. Should be a decent sounding set up at a more than reasonable price, at least for this "old" guy lol. Thanks Crutchfield!!!

A major improovement over the stock speakers. I have had them in about a week. Only criticism I have is the base response could be better, but sounds fine to my ear.Note also I have the stock amp driving these speakers and an upgrade here may make the slight shortfall in base response better. I installed these speakers in a 2007 Silverado extended cab new body style, (front doors).

Pros: So far speakers seem like a good Quality speaker that i am happy with so far.

Cons: Speakers may have a slight weakness in base response if driving base response is what you are looking for,but overall I am happy With them so far.

This is an excellent speaker, especially for the low price! Clean and crisp sound, sufficient amount of punch, and minimal distortion for the high volume music. I listen to all kinds of music from country to rock to R&B to a little screamo and it all sounds wonderful! I can even hear talk radio without adjusting the bass or treble. Music with a lot of bass is my favorite and these speakers handle well at loud volumes with my subs and amp. I am impressed and will return business when it comes time to replace my rear speakers.

2009 Chevrolet Cobalt
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice speakers if you use with a subwoofer setup or listen to country, vocal, or other music styles that don't include much bass. That being said, the factory speakers in my 09 Cobalt (non Pioneer) sounded better. I wasn't planning on adding a sub, but now I'm considering it to make up for the loss of bass.

Pros: Highs and mid range, quality construction

Cons: Falls short on low-frequency sounds, replicates bass worse than factory speakers, sounds "tinny" at times

great speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced my stock chevy speakers in my Express van with these R/F speakers and had them changed out in under an hour. The upgrade in sound quality is amazing and the price was great. Another great buy from Crutchfield, now I am probably going to put these in my Honda Accord and throw away the stock speakers.

Pros: Easy to install, fit right in factory speaker housing. Crisp sound with great treble and bass, awesome clarity on vocals.

Cons: None so far.

Features

Klippel Analysis: By using a state-of-the-art Klippel Distortion Analyzer, Rockford Fosgate engineers can optimize the speaker's motor structure, voice coil alignment, and suspension for the best possible performance and the lowest distortion.

Mounting: While Rockford Fosgate calls the R165X3 a 6-1/2" speaker, its required cutout will not allow it to fit in standard 6-1/2" applications. It does easily replace what we describe as 6-3/4" speakers. Please enter your vehicle information to confirm fit.
