Rockford Fosgate's Prime R2 subs deliver strong bass in your car, and they are definitely built to last. The R2D4-12 sub features a 12" mica-injected polypropylene cone that works with a high-density poly-foam surround to punch out fat, deep notes. Rockford Fosgate stitches the tinsel leads that carry the signal to the voice coils directly into the cone — they'll hang tough through heavy use so you get consistent, reliable performance. The stamped solid-steel frame offers venting usually found in high-end subs that keeps this sub running cool.

Dual 4-ohm voice coils allow you to wire this sub for 2- or 8-ohm impedance, giving you more flexibility in setting up your system. Rockford Fosgate optimizes this Prime sub for both sealed and ported enclosures so you can choose the type of bass you want in your ride.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 200 and 375 watts RMS at 2 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

I bought this sub to replace an MTX Thunder 4000 and right off the bat is noticeably better sound and hits a lot harder. I'm running this off of a 2 channel 1000watt Sony xplod and I will be purchasing another one of these subs soon.

Pros: Tight, acurate bass in sealed enclosure. Excellent for metal and rock.

Cons: I still need to get a second matching sub. Otherwise none.

Powerful and clean

I have this in my 2010 Civic sedan mated to a RF Punch 300-1 and it's wonderful. Very tight and you can feel the punch. Dynamat is a must with this kind of bass, unless sqeaks and rattles are your thing.

Pros: Low cost, good looks, GREAT sound.

Cons: None.

Great for small cars

Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Overview: The Rockford Fosgate Prime R2D4-12 is a 12-inch subwoofer with dual 4Ω voice coils. The sub features a StampCast steel frame, quick-release compression terminals, and a mica injected polypropylene cone. An anodized aluminum voice coil former and spider venting help keep the subwoofer cool.

Steel Basket: The R2D4-12 subwoofer features a StampCast steel basket for added rigidity.

Compression Terminals: The Prime R2D4-12 features spring post terminals which accommodate speaker wire up to 12 gauge.

CEA-2031 Compliant: Power handling on the Rockford Fosgate Prime R2D4-12 subwoofer conforms to CEA-2031 industry standards. This means the subwoofer has the capacity to handle power under continuous demand, not instantaneous power handling, that over time, can damage voice coils.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Rockford recommends a sealed enclosure with an optimum internal volume of 1.02 cubic feet (from 0.75 to 1.25 cubic feet is acceptable). Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box: Rockford recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 1.79 cubic feet using one 4" diameter x 9.3" long port; this yields a tuning frequency of 45 Hz. Ported (or vented) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of very low frequency output (below 40Hz).
