Rugged performance and value

The R500X1D's heavy cast aluminum chassis efficiently draws damaging heat away from its internal components, ensuring reliable, long-term play. The amp's built-in sensors keep track of the output current and power supply temperature, ensuring that plunging subwoofer impedances (they change constantly during play) or even a short circuit won't hurt anything. The included wired remote lets you control the amp's volume level from the front seat. Your driver's seat will become your favorite place for listening once this Prime amp goes to work.

Features

Overview: The Rockford Fosgate Prime R500X1D Class D mono amplifier is designed to power subwoofers. The Class D design and extruded aluminum heatsink allows the amplifier to run cool and efficiently, and results in a small footprint.

CEA 2006 Compliant: The R500X1D's power ratings are measured according to the uniform standards advocated by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards allow you to accurately compare the rated power output and signal to noise ratio of all CEA 2006-compliant amplifiers, even from different brands. Manufacturers who adhere to these standards can display the CEA 2006 logo on their products and packaging. CEA2006 Specifications for this amplifier are:

  • 4 Ohms: 300 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms, 14.4 volts, and less than 1% THD+N
  • 2 Ohms: 500 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms, 14.4 volts, and less than 1% THD+N
  • S/N: 80 dB, measured at 1 watt output (100 dB measured at rated power)

LED Indicator: The amplifier is equipped with an LED power/protect indicator. The LED illuminates blue when the unit is turned on. It illuminates red if the thermal or short circuit protection circuit is engaged, and the amplifier will automatically turn off.

Mounting: The amplifier can be mounted vertically or horizontally using the supplied mounting screws. The amplifier should never be mounted in an engine compartment as this will void the warranty.

Controls

Gain Control: Use the amplifier's gain control to match the output of the source unit. The rotary gain control is labeled 1 to 11 and has a sensitivity range of 150mV to 4V when using a preamp level signal, 450mV to 12V when using a speaker level signal.

Remote Punch Level Control: The R500X1D includes a wired Remote Punch Level Control, linked to the gain control of the amplifier. The module allows you to remotely control the output level of the amplifier from the dash or center console. The Remote Punch Level Control features a rotary dial, and comes with mounting hardware and an 18' cable.

Note: The Remote Punch Level Control measures approximately 1-3/4" wide (2-5/8" including the mounting flange) x 3/4" high x 1-5/8" deep (2-1/8" deep including the knob and wiring).

Crossover: The amplifier is equipped with a 12dB/octave Butterworth low-pass crossover. The crossover point is continuously variable from 50 to 250 Hz. This being a subwoofer amp, the crossover is always engaged.

Phase: The 2-position phase switch allows you to easily reverse the output phase of the amplifier, choose 0° or 180° to match the rest of your vehicle's speaker system.

Punch EQ: The Punch EQ bass boost circuit is adjustable from 0 (min) to +12dB (max) and centered at 45Hz.

Connections

Power Terminals: The power and ground terminals are nickel-plated set screw terminals and will accommodate up to 4 AWG power and ground wires. (Rockford Fosgate recommends 8 AWG minimum.)

Fuse: An external 50-amp fuse (not included) must be installed on the power wire at the battery. If a wiring kit is used which includes a fuse with a value other than 50-amps, the original should be replaced with a 50-amp fuse. When not using a wiring kit, the v6-MANL fuse holder (item number 120MANL, sold separately) and MANL50 50-amp fuse (item number 120MANL50, sold separately) can be used.

Remote Turn-On Terminal: The remote turn-on terminal is a nickel-plated set screw terminal that will accommodate up to an 8 AWG wire. It's used to remotely turn the amplifier on and off.

Speaker Terminals: The amp has one pair of nickel-plated set screw speaker output terminals which will accommodate up to 8 AWG speaker wire.

RCA Input Jacks: The industry standard RCA jacks provide an easy connection for preamp level input. They are nickel-plated to resist signal degradation caused by corrosion.

Speaker Level Input: A speaker level input harness is included, making it easier to add the amplifier to a factory radio or to a receiver with no preamp outputs.

RCA Output Jacks: A pair of RCA pass-thru jacks provides a convenient source for daisy-chaining an additional amplifier without running an extra set of RCA cables from the front of your vehicle to the amplifier location.

Wired Remote: An RJ-25 jack is used with the included Remote Punch Level Control.

Q
I ordered this amp for my subwoofer Alpine SBV-10-WRA that will mount under my Jeep Wrangler passenger seat. After I ordered, I noticed that @ 2 ohm it is rated at 500w......My question is will it be fine to use this amp if I keep the gain lower? Or should I re-order a 300w @ 2ohm......the sub rating is 300w RMS 2ohm
darryl  Jan 05, 2020
2 answers
A
My suggestion is to get an amp that is 300w rms @2 ohms. You are correct in assuming that 500w rms @2ohms is a bit too much for this subwoofer. The sub will perform better and last a lot longer if you stay within the power rating.

I actually think that amp would be nice for those two 8s. Keep your gain 40 to 50%. And then adjust your bass knob accordingly. It works great for my 1 eight inch sub, but I got to keep my base knob real low. Sounds great.

Will this amp be too over powering for 1 12in kicker comp vr 4ohm? Don't want to blow the sub .
loralyn  Jun 09, 2019
2 answers
A
That should be a great match Loralyn. If you have the dual 4 ohm voice coil 12" Kicker CompVR (https://bit.ly/2Lgk8x5) then you will wire it in parallel to 2 ohms. That Rockford amp is pushing 500 watts at 2 ohms which is ideal to push the Kicker sub to its full potential.

I don't think it'll overpower your speaker I'm running a single 10 with it and it hits decent but it's a 2 ohm amp if I remember right find one that matches your speaker you'll be happier with it

Will this amp support 2 10" rockford fosgate p2d2?
colby  Sep 27, 2018
1 answer
A
If it is the connected box and not two separate boxes it should work great. I have this amp running a single P3 12" ported box also rated for 600W RMS and it is more than enough for typical usage. Make sure to get 4 gauge power wire at least for the most out of your system.

Yes, should be plenty of power. You just need to bridge the subs by taking one of the subs negative wires to the amp and the other subs positive wire to the amp. Crutchfield has diagram on this if you click on the recommended sub enclosures for the R500X1D
chris  Nov 30, 2017

Absolutely. 2 ohm amp and 2ohm speaker.

Q
Can this 2/4 ohm amp power a JL Audio 13TW5-3 ohm speaker? I'm confused about the 3 ohm rating.
jonathan dela  May 28, 2017
1 answer
A
If I remember correctly, the RF R500X1D produces 500 watts at 2 ohms and 250 watts at 4 ohms, so, at 3 ohms it should produce about 375 watts. An amp will push wattage based on the draw of the sub, so there is no adjustment needed to the amp for the 3 ohm resistance. I don't know what the Max. RMS of your JL sub is, but suppose it is 500 watts: it is good practice to power your subs at somewhere between 3/4 and 1 1/2 times the max RMS, so if your sub's max RMS is indeed 500 watts, this amp is about the minimum amount of power necessary to operate it well. On the opposite end of the spectrum, your sub should have a max RMS rating of at least 250 watts to work with this amp.

Q
what is the max HIGH INPUT level of this amp Rockford Fosgate R500X1D? will it accept up to 100 watts per channel? i want to connect this amp to the the stock subwoofer output wires (which is amped )
trudie  May 25, 2017
2 answers
A
You can tap the factory amplified speaker wires to provide the audio signal to the "speaker level input" harness provided with the amplifier. There is no listed "maximum wattage" for the speaker level input signal. Continuous wattage (RMS) from stock systems in generally very low so, even without your vehicle information, I'm confident the amp will work well off the signal provided from your stock subwoofer speaker wire taps. I hope that helps. My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5
ryan  May 31, 2017 (Staff)
A
The R500X1D is a Mono Block amp intended for powering subwoofers only. It has a single channel input for the sub out RCAs from your head unit. It will not take a 100 watt input. I believe this amp will take either a low level input via RCA cables (generally 3 to 5 watts) or Line Level/Speaker Level inputs, which generally run in the 15 to 22 watt range. To use this amp with your factory system, you will need to bypass the factory amp (or remove it). I don't know the make/model of your vehicle, or the particulars of your system, but Crutchfield sells many devices to integrate aftermarket components into a factory system that allow you to keep factory conveniences, such as steering wheel controls and factory system components. I recommend you call a Crutchfield advisor - they are very friendly and knowledgeable - to determine what you need to do what you want.

Q
Will this amp push kicker (2) 10c154 comp s 15" 4 ohm subwoofer in a sealed box of my 2015 Chrysler 200 good ? Cause I was told that on the phone by Crutchfield worker, subwoofer is 50-250 Watts RMS. Peak power handling: 500 watts. Because I was skeptica because I was on the phone and a previous worker told me 1000 w ken wood amp is the one for it, and I had a friend which had a 1200 w amp (4 channel). And just thought that amp will underpower the subs.

I have this amp and It had more than enough power for my JL 10". I have to have the all the settings at the lowest range so that it doesn't distort the sub. Don't be fooled by the size of this amp, it's loaded with power! However, I would stick with whatever the crutch field advisor suggests for your application, they've never steered me in the wrong direction
chris  May 04, 2017
A
You should be good this amp is rated at 500 rms at 2 ohms which mean if you wire your subs down to where there going into the amp at a 2 ohm load you will deff be ok the amp is actually underrated when i received this same amp on a bench test my actually put at around 630 rms I belive but that's perfect conditions though but to answer your question yes it will run the 2 12s fine as long as it is wired at 2 ohms

Can this amp get lowered to 1ohm?
jessie  Sep 19, 2016
2 answers
A
You could wire dual voice coil subs to present a 1-ohm load to this amp, but the amp is not rated for stability at that impedance. Therefore, you'll only damage the amp and likely render it useless.
tobias  Sep 19, 2016
A
It is not recommended with this amp. It's a great amp and the birth sheet will always come in higher than rms numbers. But prime amps run hot already so I would stop at dropping below 2 ohms. My birth sheet rms was 654 at 2 ohms rms.

Where is the best place to tap into the speakers wires if I'm using the speaker level input? Near the head unit? Near the back speakers?(close to where placing the amp)
michael  Jan 02, 2016

Generally the best way is coming off rear speakers after a factory amp if one exists if no amp then you can tap in anywhere out of the head unit.If u have a mono amp then u only need to hook up one side using hi input(my set up).I bought a signal converter or impedance converter, turned out didn't need it.Added a r.f.500wx1 and a r.f. 12" hooked one side up to my hi input on amp coming off factory Bose back right speaker after amp.I personally think that's the easiest way

Can you use this amp by splicing into the rear deck speaker wiring similar to a LOC?
chris  Dec 10, 2015
2 answers
A
I Used it in 12" bass and it is good
sergio  Dec 11, 2015
A
Probably not. First, you would need a high to low level converter to take the separate high level speaker channel output and make it low level signal input (i.e. RCA cables) to the amp. Secondly, without an LOC you will only amplify de-tuned signal from a factory head unit. Thirdly, frequency response is only 20-250Hz, making this amp purpose built to run subwoofers. There's a bunch of assumptions in my response. Ultimately, yes, you could just use a high to low level converter and get isolated and de-tuned signal through the amp to a set of subs. You will be much better off using an inline LOC though, and more pleased by the sound quality.

Q
how do i connect both of these amps together?
silva  May 18, 2015
1 answer
A
There's only one amp here, what do you mean by both amps? If you're asking how to connect two of these amps to separate subwoofers, then that will require three fuse blocks (one at the battery, coming off the positive lead...and the other two coming off a fuse block in the vehicle cab). You will also need a distribution block for the ground lead off the vehicle chassis and another one for the positive lead off the battery. Recommend at least 4ga. or larger power cable off the vehicle battery and (two) 4-8ga. power cables off the positive lead distribution block. Those two cables will each need to have a fuse block with a 50 amp rated fuse. Off the battery, I'd recommend around a 150 amp fuse block for the 2 ga. positive power cable. Of course, positive lead fuse requirements will depend on the addition of any other amplifiers (say a 4-ch. amp for door speakers). Hope this helps.

I have this pair with a Rockford Fosgate R2D4-10 Prime R2 DVC 4 Ohm 10-Inch 250 Watts RMS 500 Watts Peak Subwoofer. Should I have the sub terminals wired in series or parallel?

Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the sub I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695). They will be able to help determine the differences between the models and help you make the best choice for your system.

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: This amp isn't a great match for the subwoofer but you will be safer wiring it in series. This will create an 8-ohm load so the amp will be pushing less than 300 watts but that is safer than feeding 500 watts to this subwoofer. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
Can this push my 2 12" Fosgate P3D2? I was told this can power them at 500w rms each

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: That amp would not be able to handle two subwoofers as it would only give them 250 watts RMS each. You would need to go with something like the Rockford Fosgate Prime R1200-1D which would give them 400 watts RMS each. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
Hey, I'm just wondering on how to tune it well? I want a deeper bass rather than a punch. It seems like whenever I turn it up too high it distorts instead of playing the lows. Could you help me? Thank you!
