Features

4-Channel High-Level to Low-Level Converter: The Rockford Fosgate RF-HLC4 is a 4-channel high-level to low-level signal converter designed for factory or aftermarket radios that do not have dedicated low-level RCA outputs. The adapter converts high-level signal from the radio's speaker line and transforms it into a safer low-level audio signal. This allows you to add a 4-channel amplifier to your system for higher power output and better sound quality.

Speaker Level Input: The Rockford Fosgate RF-HLC4 comes with a 10-wire speaker-level harness which plugs into the converter's 10-pin connector. The speaker-level harness will need to be spliced or crimped onto your head unit's wiring harness (splicing and crimping accessories sold separately). The RF-HLC4 has an input voltage of up to 10.5V.

Pin # Wire Color Function

8 Brown Not Used

Note:Connecting the Ground leads (brown) is not necessary unless there is noise in the audio system.

Low Level Output: The Rockford Fosgate RF-HLC4 is fitted with 4 RCA jacks (Front Left/Right, Rear Left/Right). These RCA jacks connect to your aftermarket amplifier via stereo RCA cables (sold separately). The RF-HLC4 has an output voltage of up to 3V.

Mounting Options: The 4-channel high-level to low-level signal converter should be installed behind the vehicle's dash and car stereo.

Many thanks for your feedback. Duly noted. But does the 8 channel line output converter work with only 4 line output ? As per my understanding it need 8 line input ?
bravoromu  Jun 09, 2022
A
You can split the outputs with Y-adaptors: https://www.crutchfield.com/p_142RFF/EFX-Rogue-Y-Adapter.html You'll get better signal using an 8-channel line output converter option: https://www.crutchfield.com/p_161LC8IB/AudioControl-LC8i-Black.html

Q
How does the converter know to turn on? I have a 12 pin converter currently powering my system and wish to change it to this one. The 12 pin has a power cable, ground and rem which is wired to come on when the radio is powered. Does this converter just come on when the speaker wires receive a current or does it need no power cable?

This device gets is power and signal from tapping into the factory speaker wires which carry a low voltage when the radio is turned on. Which is quite brilliant, it doesn't need any auxiliary power.

You are correct. It turns on when it receives a load from the head unit. I put this in my daughters car last year and it's still working fine with no issues.

It doesn't use any power, or need to be turned on. It's just lowers the output voltage down to around 2-3volts so you can use low voltage/RCAs to your amp. If it had signal sensing, and had a remote output to turn on an amp, then it would need a constant power source. This just has 8 speaker wires, plus some brown ground loop wires if needed. A LOC with signal sensing and remote turn on would have those, and probably a yellow for 12v constant input, and a blue for remote turn on for an amp.

As per the product description on the Crutchfield website: The HLC4 converts the high-level signal from your receiver's speaker-level outputs down to low-level signals that your amp can handle.

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

This is a 4 channel line output converter that will allow you to hook up a full range amp and/or a mono subwoofer amp to your factory system. The HLC4 converts the high-level signal from your receiver's speaker-level outputs down to low-level signals that your amp can handle. You could hook up a 2 channel full range amp and a mono amp to this at once since it has 4 preamp outputs. You can also hook up just a 4 channel amp to this as well.
allison  Dec 30, 2020 (Staff)

It can be either. This will give you more and then some.

Hi Cattaru. The RF-HLC4 is a speaker level converter. It takes the speaker level outputs from the back of your receiver, and converts them the LINE levels that your amplifiers can use. Some amplifiers are able to accept speaker level inputs. You can plug a set of RCA's in and hook the other end to your amp. There are 4 channels on this converter LF, RF, LR, and RR. These coincide with the speaker level wires. If you are looking to get more out of your speakers this will absolutely work for you. Before purchasing decide on an amplifier. The amp you pick MAY accept speaker level inputs. Good Luck.

Q
Does this converter has a Remote wire for your amps to turn off/on ? And can I used it for two amplifiers ??
frank  Jan 14, 2014
1 answer
A
No, the amp switch wire would not run through the converter. The switch wire(s) should be spliced directly to the switched 12v on the head unit. Using this for two amplifiers completely depends on your setup, and whether you want to amplify front and rear channels separately. Using a four channel amplifier combined with a separate mono amp for the sub? You can use this with two RCA "y" splitters put on either the front or rear channels. Two mono amps? Don't use this. Buy a two channel converter instead and split the signal on the RCA side.
