About the Rockford Fosgate T16-S

Alexander H.

Built to rock

Rockford Fosgate doesn't mess around when it comes to car audio. This Power Series T16-S component speaker system uses advanced design elements to ensure rock solid performance for the long road ahead. The lightweight 6" woofer features a polypropylene cone that's reinforced with strong carbon fibers — just what you need for accurate reproduction at high volumes. Rockford Fosgate also uses their proprietary VAST™ technique to increase the woofer's cone area for deeper lows without increasing the size of the basket. With power handling up to 80 watts RMS, you'll want to connect an external amplifier to make them really rock.
T16-S tweeter

Install the T16-S tweeters higher in your vehicle for better stereo imaging.

Souped-up tweeter

The separate 1" treated fabric dome tweeter gives the high frequencies a powerful presence in the mix. If you need to make adjustments based on the landscape of your car, Rockford Fosgate lets you select from three tweeter levels to optimize your highs.

Installation innovation

When it comes to installing these speakers in your car, you'll appreciate the slots around the woofer's frame if your car's factory holes are slightly off. Rockford Fosgate even includes plates that you can modify to put the round woofers into a variety of oval speaker openings.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Product Research

Features

Injection-Molded Polypropylene Woofers: The woofer cones are carbon filled, injection-molded polypropylene. This molding process assures a uniform cone thickness for superior linearity and clarity. It is also light weight and rigid for decreased distortion and improved bass response.

Klippel Verified: The Klippel distortion analyzer, a device that uses a laser and sophisticated software to do large-scale analysis of drivers in motion, lets Rockford Fosgate optimize the speaker's motor structure, voice coil alignment, and suspension to yield the best possible performance.

VAST Surround: The Vertical Attach Surround Technique (VAST) increases a speaker's effective radiating cone area without increasing the size of the basket.

FlexFit Basket: The FlexFit frame utilizes slots (where possible) instead of single screw sized holes; allowing slight adjustment of the speaker when mounted.

Size Classification Note: Rockford Fosgate calls this size woofer a 6". Because its measurements match traditional industry standard 6-1/2" speakers, and it fits traditional 6-1/2" applications, Crutchfield has typically referred the T-16S as a 6-1/2". Please enter your vehicle information to confirm fit.

Multi-OEM Adapter: For mounting flexibility, the included brackets can be modified to fit 5x7, 6x8, 6x9, and some special 6-3/4 applications. The brackets also have knockouts for mounting the tweeters. Please refer to the Crutchfield vehicle selector to confirm fit in your vehicle.

Note: The bracket is generic (cutout sized for a 5-1/4) and requires modification before the T16-S will fit into it.

Mounting: The 1" treated cloth dome tweeters have multiple mounting configurations; choose flush or surface mount. The surface mount housing can be positioned at two angles, approximately 10° or 30° angle. Depending on the mount used, the installed dimensions are:

  Flush Surface 10° Surface 30°
Mounting Height 0.40" 1.092" 1.340"
Mounting Depth 0.912" Screw Depth Screw Depth
Frame Diameter 2.112" N/A N/A
Cutout Diameter 1.75" N/A N/A
Frame Width N/A 2.126" 2.126"
Frame Depth N/A 2.151" 2.144"

Tweeter Level: A switch on the side of each crossover allows you to adjust the output level of the tweeters to -2 dB, 0 dB, or +2 dB.

Tweeter Axis: Another switch on each crossover adjusts the tweeter output for on axis or off axis placement.

Bi-amp: The crossovers have discrete inputs for the woofer and tweeter, along with a bi-amp on/off switch, so each component can be powered by an individual amplifier channel.

Slope: The crossover slope is 12dB per octave.

Wiring: The crossover inputs and outputs are set screw clamps; they will accept bare wire up to 10-gauge.

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Width: 4-5/8"
  • Height: 1-3/8"
  • Depth: 4-5/8"

I got a 300x4 channel fosgate amp . That I'm running and its just the right amount of rms power need to run the speakers without damage

Q
The woofer is listed as 6.5" on Crutchfield. However, it's listed as 6" on Rockford Fosgate's website. I'm assuming RF is correct. Crutchfield, can you please verify which is correct? Thanks.

Q
Will the crossover fit inside the door panel of my 2012 F150 supercab?

The crossovers fit inside most door panels. If there is not room or you want to mount them somewhere different our tech support can help you find alternatives. If you have questions about what the best setup is for your F150 you can get personalized advice from one of our Product Advisors here: https://bit.ly/2QNxGQB

I think they will fit but I can't say for sure. I have a 2005 Tundra and there is plenty of room if I wanted to use the crossovers. However I chose not to use the crossovers because I wanted to have more control. There is nothing wrong with using crossovers especially if you just want a easy plug and play system but they have there disadvantages such as crossover interference with amplifier signal. Loss of amp or Head units control of driver/tweeter especially near the crossover frequency. Higher THD and intermodulation distortion ect... ect... I just like the option to be able to control the crossover through the crossover built into my amp and head unit and if I would have used the crossovers that come with the speakers I would not have that option. If I wasn't using a amp and had the original factory head unit then the I would have used the crossovers.

Q
I'm thinking about getting these along with the 5.25" set for the back of my f150. Is the Rockford prime r400 amp a good pairing for these speakers?

Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.

Q
Do you have to use cross overs, whats the purpose for them?
bradley wayne  May 26, 2018

A
NO NO NO you do not have to use the crossover. I chose not to use the crossover because I wanted to use the crossover built into my amp and head unit. There is nothing wrong with using these crossovers especially if you want a plug and play just leave it system. Crossovers have there disadvantages as they are just another component in the chain to distort the signal. They also create cross interference with the amplifier signal.Loss of speaker damping and amp's direct control of driver especially near the crossover frequency.Higher THD and intermodulation distortion, interference patterns, amplitude irregularities, driver resonances, cone breakup, and degraded off-axis response ect ect. They also have advantages like I said earlier if you just want a simple plug and play system, or if you don't have a amp. Or maybe you have a original factory head unit that doesn't have crossover control then yes you want to use the crossovers.
justin  Feb 04, 2019
A
Yes you have to use crossovers they separate high and low frequencies send low to woofers and highs to tweeters

Q
I see separate tweeter and woofer inputs. What if Im just replacing factory speaker set up with one wire where do i make connection tweeter or woofer input?
robert  Aug 28, 2017

A
I would also make sure that the connections are VERY tight on the crossovers, because they like to wiggle loose after 3-6 months of moderately aggressive driving.

The splitter will work if you just have one set of inputs. In my car, I am using a Rockford Fosgate Amplifier as well, and it only has one output for each speaker. I have my crossovers (the little black boxes that came with the speakers) set to axis mode, and with a 0db change. Hope this helps! Nick
