Show your CDs some love

CD playback has been around for decades now. What once was regarded as a high-fidelity revolution has been dismissed or forgotten thanks to a new generation of playback possibilities. But if you've spent years painstakingly acquiring and maintaining a CD collection, you know the sonic capabilities of this still-relevant format. So give your CDs the love they deserve. The Onkyo C-7030 is a high-performance CD player — not a multi-purpose video device — designed solely to make CDs sound their best.

Designed with audiophiles in mind

So how does the C-7030 squeeze every drop of audio greatness out of your CDs? By reducing the opportunities for signal degradation so your music remains as sonically pure as possible. It starts with a large, custom-built transformer to provide plenty of clean power. The high-precision clock minimizes timing errors, or jitter, as the signal enters the digital-to-analog conversion. The D/A converter is a high-quality 24-bit/192 kHz DAC, and Onkyo's Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry™ further ensures a sonically pure signal by reducing pulse noise at the conversion stage. It may sound complicated, but the gist is that Onkyo has gone the extra mile to ensure your CDs sound as clean and clear as possible.

The C-7030 will play standard CDs as well as MP3 and WMA CDs and CD-Rs/RWs. The heavy-duty chassis of this beefy 11.7-pound player is designed to prevent unwanted vibration and resonance. And the dedicated headphone amplifier circuitry includes volume control, so you can plug your favorite headphones directly into the C-7030 without using a separate amp or receiver.

Features

Disc Compatibility: The Onkyo C-7030 single-disc CD player will play Audio CDs and CD-R/CD-RW discs (12cm/8cm). It will also supports playback of MP3 (32-320kbps; 32/44.1/48 kHz) and WMA (32-192kbps; 32/44.1/48kHz) files recorded onto CD-R/RW discs in ISO9660 Level 2. The CD player can recognize up to 99 folders and up to 499 files per MP3/WMA disc.

VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry): In conventional digital-to-analog conversion methods, it's impossible to completely remove noise. This noise taints the analog signal and ultimately degrades the sound emitted from your speakers. With Onkyo's VLSC, though, data is continuously sampled between two discrete points (via a signal comparison generator) and the difference is joined with analog vectors in real time to produce a smooth output waveform. The VLSC digital-to-analog conversion method results in an accurate, virtually pulse noise-free audio signal that faithfully reproduces the acoustic detail and subtle nuances of all your audio sources, and breathes life into digital media.

24-bit/192kHz DAC: A high-quality digital-to-analog converter works to optimize audio performance of the C-7030. This DAC performs advanced 24-bit signal processing and supports sampling rates of up to 192 kHz, while displaying high resistance to clock jitter. With this advanced onboard DAC, the C-7030 delivers a pristine conversion of digital signals into analog audio output.

Precision Clock (+/-10ppm): The C-7030 boasts a precise clocking mechanism that controls and coordinates the timing of all digital signal processes (like how a conductor directs and coordinates the individual instruments of an orchestra). The C-7030 uses a state-of-the-art crystal oscillator that achieves a frequency deviation of ±10 ppm, much lower than with a conventional oscillator.

Custom-Designed Massive EI Transformer: Powering the CD Player, is a massive, custom-built transformer that provides a clean and stable power supply.

High-Rigidity, Anti-Resonant Chassis: Build quality of the Onkyo C-7030 starts from the ground up with a highly rigid, 1.6mm thick, fully flat chassis and solid aluminum front-panel that provides excellent protection against shelf-borne vibrations.

Front-Panel LCD: The Onkyo C-7030 features a front-panel LCD which can display the following disc information - Time Elapsed/Remaining, File/Folder Name, Song Title, Artist Name, Album Name, and Sampling-/Bit-rate. You can adjust the brightness of the display from Normal, Dim, Dimmer.

Controls

Remote Control: The Onkyo C-7030 single-disc CD player includes an IR remote control for wireless operation. There are also basic playback controls located on the player's front-panel.

Direct Track Access: The numeric keypad (0-9, >10) of the remote control can be used to directly access a track or file on a disc.

File/Folder Mode: During MP3/WMA playback, you can choose to search for files (songs) within a folder or on an entire disc.

25-Track Memory Playback: You can create a playlist of up to 25 tracks/files per disc.

Random Playback: In Random playback mode, all of the files on a disc are played back in random order.

Repeat Playback: In Repeat playback mode, you can playback an entire disc repeatedly, play one track/file repeatedly, combine it with memory playback to play a playlist repeatedly, or combine it with random playback to play all tracks on a disc in random order repeatedly.

Auto Standby Function: If the CD player is left stopped for approximately 30 minutes, the power will automatically turn off, placing the unit in Standby mode. If playback is simply paused, the power will remain on even after 30 minutes have elapsed.

Connections

Analog Audio Output: The Onkyo C-7030 single-disc CD player is fitted with a set of stereo RCA analog audio outputs to connect to your home receiver.

Digital Audio Outputs: The Onkyo C-7030 features two digital audio outputs; one optical (toslink) and one coaxial (RCA). The player's digital outputs support 16-bit/44.1kHz PCM (2ch).

1/4" Headphone Jack: The Onkyo CD Player features its own built-in headphone amp with a front-panel 1/4" headphone jack and independent volume control. Connecting a set of headphones to the front-panel 1/4" jack does not mute the player's audio outputs (you will need to turn down the volume on your receiver).

RI (Remote Interactive) Terminal: The C-7030 provides two RI inputs (3.5mm) which can be connected to other RI-compatible Onkyo components. With RI (Remote Interactive) you can control the C-7030 together with your other RI-compatible Onkyo AV components from one remote control.

  • Direct Change: If the C-7030 CD player is connected to an RI-compatible Onkyo receiver, when you start playback on the C-7030, the Onkyo receiver will automatically select the C-7030 as the input source.
  • Remote Control Operation: You can control playback operation of the C-7030 by using your Onkyo receiver's remote control.

Q
Hello - what DAC does this unit use?
stephen  Nov 29, 2022
1 answer
A
That is a great question, Stephen. It appears as the exact DAC is not listed by Onkyo sadly. What we do know is that it appears quite capable, especially in this price point. This mystery DAC performs advanced 24-bit signal processing and supports sampling rates of up to 192 kHz, while displaying high resistance to clock jitter, so it should sound amazing. If you are more comfortable knowing what to expect, you can always go with the tried-and-true NAD C 538 in the link below with its Wolfson also matching the 24-bit 192K specs of the Onkyo. I hope this helps! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_745C538/NAD-C-538.html

Q
CDs are 44.1kHz/16bit. What is the purpose of a 192 kHz/24-bit DAC in a CD player?
robert  Oct 09, 2022
1 answer
A
The primary reason would be headroom. Using a DAC that is more capable than necessary means that we are not pushing the outer limits of conversion capability.

Q
I currently have Onkyo DX-C390 I like it because it holds 6 CD's and I can put it on random for a variety of listening but my question is would I get noticeably better sound quality if I purchased the Onkyo C-7030 would I notice the difference?
dave  Sep 15, 2022
4 answers
A
Personally I would stick with your 6 disc player, I have the single player, and wish I had purchased the multiplayer, and been able to put it in random play for my favorite cds
keith  Sep 16, 2022
A
I purchased the Onkyo C-7030 and was not at all impressed. I couldn't even walk across the floor without it skipping. I purchased a Yamaha CD-S303 to replace the Onkyo and it is great.
thomas  Sep 15, 2022
A
I'm not sure I can answer that except to say that pretty much as soon as my Onkyo arrived it occasionally had skipping or gaps in the song play backs and for the most part on on the first track so I'd have to hit the back button a time or 3 to get it to act right. Were I not so lazy I'd have sent it back for a new unit. That said I know they make good gear and I primarily play vinyl so I've put up with it. If your 6 disc unit sounds great to you I can't really imagine you'd get a marked improvement in playback fidelity, but that's just my opinion based on no real experience.
patrick  Sep 15, 2022
A
Honestly, ibwasnt very happy with the 7030. The slightest vibration causes it to skip. And no you would not experience a beer sound unless you upgraded to something with a very superior DAC like a Rega Apollo. Hope this helps.
robert  Sep 15, 2022
Q
Does it have gapless playback?
mark  Jul 27, 2022
1 answer
A
It does not support gapless playback.

Q
Can I use this with powered speakers and no receiver?
marty  Jul 09, 2022
1 answer
A
This can work with powered speakers that have either an analog RCA, 3.5mm stereo mini, digital optical, or digital coaxial audio input!

Q
Does this CD player get warm/hot after extended use? I wouldn't expect a CD player to expel heat, but my Onkyo amp is like a furnace. I play a white noise CD all night and live in Texas, so I don't want to introduce any more heat into the room. Thanks for any insights!

A
My C7030 gets warm not hot, my amp gets warmer you can rest your hand on it but not like a furnace.
raymond  Mar 06, 2019
A
No, I haven't noticed any heat at all and I've used mine quite a bit in the past two years or so that I've had it. It's a great CD player. Real nice sound.
steven  Mar 04, 2019
A
Yes mine gets warm though not hot. It (the Onkyo CD player) sits over my old Marantz 2300 B receiver. There's plenty of air circulation space between the two pieces. Again, the Onkyo gets warm. Not hot. And, it's been working just fine. I set up my radio show every week, using the CD player for previews. I hope this information helps . . . Donn Trethewey
donn  Mar 02, 2019
A
In Cleveland, we'd appreciate the heat but no, I don't notice any warmth from my Onkyo CD player. I have my Yamaha integrated amp on top of the CD player with ventilation from above and they both operate fine. There must be a little heat but nothing that will add to your discomfort. Enjoy!

Q
How do you adjust the audio(sound) with the remote ?
wayne  Nov 08, 2018
3 answers
A
The short answer is you can't adjust the sound with the remote or on the player itself. Because the output is fixed, you cannot adjust the volume and there is no bass/treble adjustment.
mark  Nov 09, 2018
A
I don't. I adjust the overall volume at my receiver (or its remote), and the headphone volume at either the CD player front panel headphone volume control, or the headphone volume control on the front of my receiver (Outlaw Audio RR2160).
daniel  Nov 09, 2018
A
I think that you can not adjust any audio volume with the C-7030 remote. The audio volume is adjusted by adjusting the volume on the amp, receiver, etc that your disc player is connected to. The C-7030 provides an audio input signal, it is not an amp or a preamp. The C-7030 does have a volume control on the front for a set of headphones, but I believe that this is only controlled by the volume control and not the remote. You should check your owner's manual for detailed operation of the unit with the remote. If your sound system is fairly new, you likely have a remote for your amp which typically can control the volume level of the amp.
steven  Nov 08, 2018

Q
If i use the digital coax output of 7030 to coax input of 9050 does this mean that i am also utilizing the built in DAC of my 9050 amplifier? I hope somebody can explain further . What is the difference if i use the RCA analog in terms of SQ? Thanks a lot.
blaire  Mar 09, 2017
1 answer
A
Using the optical connection to your receiver would mean that you will be ising the receivers built in DAC. Using an analog (RCA) from the CD player would be using the DAC in the player. I do not know which DAC is better though.

I have enjoyed Onkyo components for many years. They are high quality, good sounding, durable pieces of sound equipment. I really like my single tray Onkyo CD player, it's very simple, includes the remote.
john  Oct 02, 2016
A
Although I usually use the jack on my amp this cd player output works fine with headphones. I use Bose but any quality headphones should work fine. I like this cd player.
richard  Oct 01, 2016
A
This is a great playback only CD player. It reproduces really well, and will tackle any CD with clarity, fidelity and awesome sound. I recommend it highly.
wendy  Sep 30, 2016

Bad with technology. Old sophisticated system not working right. Want a stand alone system to play my cd's with no need to attach it to speakers. Will this work for me?
sharon  Sep 27, 2016
6 answers
A
No, this is a CD player for a system. You will need to buy a "all in one system" that plays CD's. Think "boombox".
bridget  Sep 28, 2016
A
You will need some type of ear phones, or you will need a pair of speakers
ralph  Sep 28, 2016
A
Unless you're planning on using headphones, this CD player isn't for you, as it doesn't have a built-in amplifier. It's an excellent unit, however!
brandon  Sep 28, 2016
A
No. This is component for old-style receiver-amplifier-turntable-etc. with separate speakers. Great for replacement. For your needs, try basic $20 boom-box and replace as necessary.
thomas  Sep 27, 2016
A
No, it needs to be connected to an reciever, amplifier, or home theater system.
william  Sep 27, 2016
A
Unfortunately not. This is just a CD player with no speakers. It would have to be attached to a receiver and/or speakers.

Q
Can I stack this CD player with the amp and turntable? Thanks
annarmie  Apr 20, 2016
8 answers
A
You can stack the CD player on a component amp but it isn't big enough for the turntable that I have.
paul  Apr 22, 2016
A
Usually, the amplifier puts out a good bit of heat. Therefore, if you are planning on putting the CD player on top of the amp, I would not recommend it. The amplifier needs plenty of air circulation to pull the heat away (depending on power needed, etc.)
larry  Apr 22, 2016
A
no do not stack.
ralph  Apr 21, 2016
A
Not sure about the dimensions of your amp and turntable, Annarmie, but I'd say yes. I have mine stacked with Amp and Tuner (both Technics) and DVR (Sony) with no issues whatsoever. From more than 5 ft away the look like a matching set. Hope this is helpful and answers your question
ron  Apr 21, 2016
A
I do not know about the turntable, but I stacked a small amp on top (NAD 315BEE).
brandon  Apr 21, 2016
A
Yes. I use a couple of 1 1/2 X 1 1/2 blanks of ebony to give air flow over the amp. The turntable would be on top. Gary
gary  Apr 21, 2016
A
I have my Onkyo C-7030 stacked on my old Nakamichi cassette deck, so there isn't any ventilation vents being blocked. The Onkyo doesn't have any vents on top that would be blocked, so I don't see why a turntable couldn't be put on top.
philip f.  Apr 20, 2016
A
The CD player puts out very little heat, however you don't want anything on top of the amp because it does get warm.
larry  Apr 20, 2016
Q
what compatible reciever can I purchase to go with this unit?
kathleen  Mar 27, 2016
3 answers
A
This would work with any stereo receiver. The receiver you buy is also dependent on the speakers you have or will buy, and their power requirements. One of the Onkyo receivers can be a good match (eg: 8050).
martin r  Mar 28, 2016
A
it will work with any AMP. I have 2 cd players one I use with an ADCOM pre amp and amp the other one is a Yamaha TSR- 7790 Arthur
arthur  Mar 28, 2016
A
Any of the newer ONKYO models would be a great fit for the 7030. The ONKYO 9010 is an integrated amp on the more entry level side. If you're looking at climbing up a bit the 9050 would be great as well. Of course any of the newer ONKYO a/v receivers would make a great partner also. The TX-SR444 would sit mid level amongst ONKYO's new line of "affordable" but very high quality a/v receivers. The ONKYO models communicate well with each other via a remote input on the back of each unit. This is a nice feature if you value needing only one remote. I do have an ONKYO a/v receiver but I chose to pair my ONKYO 7030 CD player with a MARANTZ integrated amp for a 2-channel audio set-up. When it's all said and done ONKYO is making very nice stuff right now so I'd say what you choose depends upon what your needs are. Either way, whether you go with an integrated amplifier or an a/v receiver you can't go wrong pairing the 7030 with any quality receiver, whether ONKYO, YAMAHA or MARANTZ. I generally stick with one of these three manufacturers. Hope that helps

I have a NAD 565bee,a replacement of the original where the cd drive failed. This has happened again( out of warranty) so no more NAD. How does the Onkyo compare? Also with the NAD had to have a direct line of sight for remote to work, prefer one that can work at an angle. Advice appreciated

Great player for the price....remote works well for me....never had a problem with It ..have fun!
frank  Dec 28, 2015
A
I don't know how the NAD compares to the Onkyo, ubt I can tell you 1) I am quite happy with this product. It plays CD's with crystal clarity. A reasonably priced CD player which (to my ears) achieves high priced performance. 2) I don't think angle remote works on this one either, but can't say definitively. In general a 30 degree side position works with remotes, but more than that is sketchy.
gregg  Dec 28, 2015
A
I've had the Onkyo C7030 since 2/2014 and use it frequently. I've had no problem with it. I don't need to maintain line of sight in order for the remote to work.
michael j  Dec 26, 2015
A
I have been very happy with the Onkyo single CD player. Solid and has built in DAC. I added this to my vintage Onkyo stack used mainly for vinyl but I have a large CD collection. Just played the new David Gilmour CD yesterday. I've had no issues with this player and would buy again. CW
john craig  Dec 26, 2015
A
I purchased the Onkyo at the beginning of 2014. I haven't had any problems with it yet. It has gotten a lot of use. I had a older Sony that died. This Onkyo blows it away, sounds so much better. I don't think you can go wrong with the Onkyo.
steve  Dec 26, 2015
A
I have not heard any of the NAD CD players and thus cannot compare them directly to the Onkyo. But I can report that I returned the Onkyo because of unsatisfactory sound quality. Most of my listening is classical, and strings, for example, sounded course and gritty. I exchanged it for a Yamaha S-300. Sound is much better than the Onkyo. The remote does not seem to be sensitive to angle. In some ways it's a little clunky; the remote would be more ergonomic if the track buttons were isolated from the others. The player has no standby mode. That's not a criticism, just a description. Out of curiosity I check for upgrade candidates periodically, but I think a noticeably better player would cost at least $500. The Yamaha is very good in both sound and build quality.
roland  Dec 26, 2015
A
We've been very happy with the Onkyo but with fairly limited use as it's for a second home. We don't use the remote so I can't comment on that but the function and sound quality have been excellent. We also have a different system at our primary home with a more expensive Rotel that is now 14 years old and starting to act up and I've decided I'll replace it with the Onkyo so we are very pleased.
robert  Dec 26, 2015
A
This unit performs nicely. The remote seems to work from an angle. I am pleased with it. This was also a replacement for a cd changer.
steven  Dec 26, 2015
Q
How easy/difficult is it to program this player? I'm comparing it to the NAD 516BEE and more than one reviewer wrote about the ease with which they program, which is important to me. Thanks.

The function to choose tracks is on the remote. Just press "memory", then select the tracks you want played.

This product is a breeze to program. If you have any trouble just call Crutchfield. They are the greatest and nicest people around! I havent had any trouble with anything i have bought from them. Talk about fast shipping you cant get any better!!! You cant go wrong with this cd player. Highly recommend this product and all products Crutchfield sales. Special shoot out to copper. Once again thanks. Randy
randy  Dec 03, 2014
A
Not sure about the programmability, but the NAD sounds so much better! I exchanged the Onkyo for the NAD. I thought it was harsh sounding. The NAD beats it hands down!
glenn  Dec 03, 2014
A
I have never programed this unit, I wanted to write to you though to caution you that there is no dedicated port for a sub woofer. You will loose your B speakers (if sub has no outs) to hook up a sub. We have a TV in our bedroom and we hooked up book-shelf speakers and a sub, (all to this unit) the sound is really good for music and movie play back. Sorry I could not help with the programing however I can't imagine it being all that difficult.

Q
Someone in the reviews mentioned that the only way to fast forward or reverse is from the remote, is that true?
robert  Mar 07, 2014
11 answers
A
False, the double arrow seek buttons on the player fast forward and reverse when you press and hold.
bruce e  Mar 09, 2014
A
No, it is not true. There is one set of forward and reverse buttons. Press the relevant button to move forward or backward a single track. Hold it down to fast forward or reverse.
thomas s  Mar 08, 2014
A
Yes Onkyo C-7030 will fast-forward with the face button. If you depress the once it goes to the next selection, but if held depressed it is fast-forward. This is pretty much industry standard.
phil.  Mar 07, 2014
A
you can control all functions from the unit you can forward and reverse without the remote hope this helps.
alan  Mar 07, 2014
A
Yes, this the case. I was surprised by this omission in design, but ultimately it has not caused me any inconvenience. I am very happy with the unit.
