Just add the 5.1 speaker system of your choice and you've got everything you need for enveloping home theater sound!

Looking for a home theater solution that's simple to set up and use, but still packs the power and precision of a component system? Onkyo's DR-C500 delivers on both counts by combining a full-featured home theater receiver and a 5-disc DVD/CD changer in one stylishly contoured chassis. Just add the 5.1 speaker system of your choice and you've got everything you need for enveloping home theater sound!

The DVD/CD carousel lets you load up 5 discs' worth of movies and music and settle back for a full evening of entertainment. Progressive-scan DVD playback offers a remarkably smooth, filmlike image with High-Definition TVs and HDTV-ready TVs. Or you can select interlaced output to deliver a sharp, detailed picture to a standard TV. This carousel also offers true disc-playing versatility, handling not only DVDs and standard CDs, but also home burned CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and long-playing MP3 CDs.

The DR-C500's receiver section boasts 100 watts x 5 channels of high-current Onkyo power to immerse you in dynamic multichannel sound. It's also got built-in decoding for Dolby® Digital and DTS® sources, plus Pro Logic™ II processing, which lets you turn any stereo or surround source into convincing 5.1-channel sound.

The back panel's digital and analog inputs let you hook up your other A/V components to build a killer system, and a component video pass-through makes it easy to add an HDTV tuner when you're ready. A second set of main speaker outputs — a rarity on receiver/DVD player combo units — lets you power a pair of stereo speakers in a second room. The learning/multibrand remote lets you control all your A/V components, and its illuminated keys even allow easy operation in the dark.

Features

MP3 Playback: This unit will play MP3 files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1 format. This unit is not compatible with multi-session discs. If you try to play a multi-session disc, only the first session will be played. This unit can recognize a maximum of 223 folders and 223 tracks. Discs containing more than 223 folders or tracks will not play.

Decoding: The DVD receiver has built-in Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II decoding.

96kHz/24-bit Audio DAC: The DVD receiver has a 96kHz/24-bit D/A converter that allows it to play back DVDs with 96kHz/24-bit linear PCM digital audio.

Video D/A Converter: The DR-C500 uses a 27MHz/10-bit video digital-to-analog converter, which reduces digital artifacts for a better picture.

Progressive Scan Output: The DVD receiver supports the Progressive scan system, as well as the conventional Interlace scan system. Instead of splitting each video frame into two sequential fields like interlaced scan, progressive scan displays the entire frame in a single sweep. Where a standard DVD player's 480i output displays 30 frames (60 fields) per second, a progressive-scan player's 480p output displays 60 full frames per second. Progressive-scan picture quality is more film-like, with more fine detail and less flicker. Progressive-scan viewing requires a TV with a progressive scan compatible component video input.

Component Video Output: In addition to the composite and S-video outputs, the DVD receiver is equipped with a set of component video outputs. When connected to a television with a component video input, the component video output of the DVD receiver will provide picture color and detail that is superior to video from composite and S-video outputs. The component video output may be set for interlaced or progressive scan operation.

On-screen Display: The on-screen display language can be set to English, French, Spanish, German, or Italian.

Surround Modes: This DVD receiver incorporates several surround modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your audio and video software. The surround modes include:

  • Dolby Digital
  • DTS
  • Dolby Pro Logic II (Movie and Music)
  • Orchestra
  • Unplugged
  • Studio
  • TV Logic
  • All Ch Stereo

Late Night Function: This function compresses the dynamic range of Dolby Digital sources, for greater enjoyment of surround sound at low volumes. This mode is ideal for listening at night, when turning the volume up to hear the softest passages of a soundtrack makes the loud passages too loud. The Late Night function can be set to Low, High, or Off.

Acoustic Control: This feature allows you to enjoy more dynamic sound by boosting the super bass/high frequency sounds, even with decreased volume. You can select A. Ctrl 1, A. Ctrl 2, or A. Ctrl Off. In A. Ctrl 1 mode, the super bass sounds are boosted. In A. Ctrl 2, the super bass sounds are further reinforced and the high frequency sounds are also reinforced.

Speaker Setup: During speaker setup, you can choose the number of speaker channels. You may select 2ch (front left and right speakers), 3ch (front left, center, and right speakers), 4ch (front left and right, plus surround left and right speakers), or 5ch (front left, center, and right, plus surround left and right speakers). The subwoofer mode can be set to SW Mode 1 (select when small front speakers are connected), SW Mode 2 (select when large, wideband front speakers are connected), SW Mode 3 (select when large, wideband speakers are connected to all channels), or SW Off. The front, center and surround speaker distance can be adjusted from 1 to 30 feet. Each speaker's level can be adjusted from -10dB to +10dB.

Direct Title/Chapter/Track Selection: Title, chapter, and track numbers can be selected directly from the remote.

Bookmarks: When playing a DVD, Video CD, or an audio CD, up to 9 points can be stored in memory and easily recalled. Bookmarks are automatically cleared when the power is turned off or when a disc is removed.

IntroScan: When playing a Video CD or an audio CD, you can play the first 10 seconds of each track on the disc.

Program Play: Up to 32 titles, chapters and tracks can be programmed and played in any order.

Random Play: When playing a Video CD or an audio CD, you can play the tracks on the current disc in random order, or you can play all the tracks on the loaded discs in random order. In addition, you can repeat all disc random play.

Repeat Play: "A-B Repeat" allows you to select any portion of a title, chapter, or track and play that portion repeatedly. When playing a DVD, you can repeat the current title, current chapter, or the entire disc. When playing Video CD or an audio CD, you can repeat the current track, current disc, or all loaded discs. When playing an MP3 CD, you can repeat the current track, current folder, current disc, or all loaded discs.

Scan Search: When playing a DVD, there are four fast-play speeds in both directions. When playing a Video CD or an audio CD, there are three fast-play speeds in both directions.

Slow Motion: When playing a DVD, you may move forward and backward through the program being played in one of four slow motion speeds. When playing a Video CD, you may move forward through the program being played in one of three slow motion speeds.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer turns the system off after a set period of time. You can adjust the sleep timer from 10 to 90 minutes in 10 minute increments.

Display Dimmer: The display illumination can be set to one of four brightness levels.

Remote Control

Multibrand/Learning Remote: The supplied wireless remote is an illuminated multibrand/learning remote. The remote is pre-programmed to operate other popular brands of equipment, including DVD players, satellite receivers, cable boxes, VCRs, and televisions. Also, the remote can learn up to a total of 220 commands from infrared remotes of other brands of equipment.
