Delivers it's Promise

Written By Friendly Helper CA, Palm Desert, CA on Sunday, January 27, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Amp replaced a 26 year old Harmon Kardon amplifier with twice the wattage (200 vs. 100). Was concerned it would adequately fire 16 speakers in multi-room application. Contacted Crutchfield Customer Service who had a Tech Rep Specialist call me back. After several good questions and discussion, we both felt it would work (Plus, Rep said "you have 60 days to return it if not"). Product was delivered one day early, well packed, wonderfully simple to install...even for a non-techie...and works beautifully. Had to turn the volumn control on the back of the unit down to prevent blasting out the neighbors.

Pros: Delivers Onkyo's Promise. Fires 16 speakers in multiple rooms. Super easy to install and adjust. Price value is excellent...beats anything out there (and I looked hard)

Cons: Volumn control should be on the front of the unit; not the back where it's hard to reach

rocks out

Outdoor music system

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased three Onkyo M-282s to each connect to a pair of Definitive Technology AW6500 outdoor speakers in my large backyard. Each amplifier is connected to an Apple Airport Express. Using the Apple Remote app and iTunes, I'm able to remotely turn off and on each zone and independently adjust volume. The sound is great and the amps automatically turn themselves off and on, depending on whether the Airport Express units are providing a signal. Outstanding products, outstanding service. Highly recommended.

Pros: lots of clean power to drive any kind of speaker. Auto On so the amps can be remotely located - no need to turn the power switch off and on.

Cons: None

Good Amp-Great Price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this amp to replace my B&K St 125.2, which ran outta steam. The M282 is actually a better amp in sound quality, although it doesnt have quite as much power as the B&K. It runs alot cooler, which is a plus. I have this amp paired with my Bose 901's, and they sound better than ever. My only problem with the amp is that it's not bridgeable, I'd love to be able to have 1 per speaker. But at this price there's not much need to complain.

Pros: Great sound quality Affordable Runs cool !2V Trigger/audio in auto turn on

Cons: Not bridgeable

Works as it should.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit was well packed and arrived with no damage. It installed in minutes and worked as I hoped it would. Clear and detailed sounnd reproduction with the rest of my system. I tried the unit using its standby-audio presence detection feature. With my system that was not a good choice due to an AC switching tansient. Direct connection to switched AC worked best with my preamp. Be prepared to find the turn-on feature that woks best with your system. This unit is powering two AR-2Ax speakers direct with no separate sub-woofer. Clear transparent balanced sound is the result.

Better than expected

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Powering two subwoofers with ease. No over heating problems even when used for extended periods. Gives earth shattering base to my HSU subs.

Pros: Use to power two subs, set up to turn on when audio sensed at inputs. Works absolutely great runs cool. Provides wonderful base response.

Cons: Nothing. Maybe just one, the unit is about 7.5" high, seems a bit tall for a power amp,but this is not worth mentioning. But I did anyway.

great amp

Bought the amp to power my outdoor speakers. The feedthrough input and variable input attenuation are exactly what I needed. Amp is quiet, low noise and accurately reproduces the input. I would buy again. Very pleased with the purchase.

Works perfectly for me

I bought this Amp to turn my Yamaha RX A2000 from a 7.2 receiver to a 9.2
receiver I only use the Amp to power my presence speakers which I use little
Polk RM,s And the amp does a perfect job. I also use the 12 volt trigger from
the Yamaha to the Onkyo which works flawlessly.

Works perfect.

Works great with my 4 Polk RC80s.

I have this amp running at 4 ohms and it has been working great for weeks. I know it is only rated at 6 ohms but I was assured by Crutchfield that I could do it as long as I take it easy on the speakers.

This is a great low-cost amplifier!

Onkyo M-282

Written By jmacinok, USA on Friday, January 25, 2008

This is a very good enty level amp. It can be a bit bright but the gain can be adjusted to minimize the excess brightness. It doesn't run too hot like other amps I've had and it has a very clean and basic look on the front panel. All in all, I'm happy with my purchase and would buy more, if I needed them and didn't want to spend the money on other very high end amps.

Poor value and bad performance

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought two of these to bi-amp some very large speakers of the sort used by EMI to master their disks; I have several sets of the speakers in several rooms. One of the Onkyo amps died in a month and Crutchfield instantly replaced it.

These do not sound good, and it's not a matter of power handling. I have tried several front ends, digitally driven from my Mac, on uncompressed music, and compare them with identical speakers in another room, driven by the 7.1-channel Sony Sony STR-DG1000 receiver (reviewed elsewhere), using the Sony's ability to dedicate the back channels to bi-amplification.

Not only does the Sony have more power but it sounds much better. It has half the footprint, and you get a whole good preamp with decent DSP too.

The Onkyos have distortion in any sort of upper-range piano notes, and some in strings. Note that this is a moderate and low volumes. This is a design flaw in the amp, this painful built-in distortion.

Get the Sony receiver and use the extra 330W for center and surround speakers. Or do like me and merely use stereo. It's $100 more and you don't need a preamp.

This is a mature technology and these will on moving be given away.

WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks.

12V Turn-On Trigger: When the 12V Trigger input jack on the back of this unit is connected to the 12V Trigger output jack of a compatible Onkyo amplifier or preamplifier, this unit will automatically go into standby mode when the amplifier or preamplifier is switched to standby and turn on when the amplifier or preamplifier is turned on. Note: The Trigger switch on this unit must be in the 12V Trigger position for this feature to work.

Auto Power On/Off: When the Trigger switch is in the Audio position, this unit turns on automatically when a signal is supplied to the Audio In jacks. If no signal is supplied to the Audio In jacks for more than 4 minutes, this unit will go into standby mode.

Input Level Adjustment: The Input Level control on the rear panel allows you to adjust the input level of the signal from the Audio In RCA jacks.

Audio In/Out Link Function: The signal supplied to the Audio In jacks is passed through the Audio Out jacks. When used as a 2-channel amplifier in a multi-room configuration, you can connect several M-282s to enjoy the same source in several rooms.

Front Panel:
  • Power Button: Turns unit On or Off
  • Standby/On LED: The LED glows orange when the unit is on and red when the unit is in standby mode
Rear Panel:
  • Input Level Control: This rotary knob allows you to adjust the input level of the signal from the Audio In RCA jacks
  • Trigger Switch: Can be set to Audio, 12V Trigger, or Off

Rear Panel:
  • Audio Input/Output: Gold-plated stereo RCA jacks
  • 12V Trigger In: One 1/8" jack for use with compatible Onkyo components
  • Speakers: Left and right binding post outputs (collar prevents use of spade lugs, so they are not 5-way binding posts)
  • AC Inlet: AC jack for use with supplied AC power cord

  • Power Output: 100 watts per channel minimum RMS into 8 ohms (20 Hz to 20 kHz with no more than 0.08% THD); 125 watts per channel minimum RMS into 6 ohms (1 kHz with no more than 0.1% THD)
