Take your home theater above and beyond with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X™

A technology that just made its debut in home theater receivers last year, Dolby Atmos creates the most lifelike, captivating surround sound of any audio format we've heard to date. If you're watching a plane take off onscreen, your ears will follow it down the runway along with your eyes, and as it flies overhead you might swear your hair is blowing back as it roars directly above you. The TX-RZ800 supports a 5.1.2 Atmos setup. If you're ready to explore this new dimension in home theater sound, you'll just need to add a pair of in-ceiling speakers to your five-channel system, or pick up a pair of Atmos enabled upward-firing speakers to project sound off your ceiling and create the height effects that make an Atmos system so riveting.

Onkyo will release a firmware update in the summer of 2016 that will give this receiver DTS:X surround sound, an upcoming format which will use object-based processing similar to Dolby Atmos and overhead speakers for immersive home theater.

Endless streaming options

The TX-RZ800's built-in Wi-Fi lets you access the music you have stored on your networked computer, plus you can take advantage of free Internet radio and other subscription-based Internet radio services like Spotify®, Pandora®, and SiriusXM Internet radio. All of these options can be controlled with the Onkyo Remote app on your phone. Bluetooth lets you stream any music you listen to on your phone or tablet directly to the receiver for playback through your home speakers, and Apple AirPlay lets you send music wirelessly from a compatible Apple device or from any computer with iTunes®.

High-res audio

Great sound is key

Audio performance is at the heart of the TX-RZ800's design. Onkyo's Wide Range Amplifier technology gives you smooth sound with minimal distortion for thrilling movie sound effects. Phase-matching Bass Boost lets you enjoy deep, thunderous low frequency effects while vocals and dialogue remain clear. Music aficionados will appreciate decoding for high-resolution DSD and FLAC files, along with other high-res formats. Onkyo's Music Optimizer helps improve the sound of compressed audio files and Bluetooth streams so you can hear your music the way it was meant to be heard. A premium 32-bit/384kHz digital-to-analog converter uses an exclusive low-distortion filtering technology to deliver crystal-clear reproduction of music and TV and movie soundtracks.

Enjoy music and video in multiple rooms

Ever wish you had a dedicated music listening room? It isn't hard to set one up with the TX-RZ800's multi-zone audio capabilities. Powered Zone 2 outputs let you connect a pair of speakers for stereo sound in another room, so you can still enjoy 5.2-channel surround sound in your living room. You can also connect a stereo receiver through line-level Zone 2 and Zone 3 connections and use the 'RZ800 as a preamp. Whole House Mode lets you play the same song in all zones, or you can listen to a different song in each room. A second HDMI out lets you watch video from two separate sources in your living room and a second room. Use the Onkyo Remote app to control playback in different zones from anywhere in the house.

7 Channel Amplifier: The Onkyo TX-RZ800 AV receiver features a 7-channel amplifier rated at 135 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20Hz-20kHz, with 0.08%, driving 2 channels). The AV receiver's amplifier employs independent block construction, WRAT, 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry, and a H.C.P.S (High Current Power Supply) for dynamic, detailed, clear sound.

    • Independent Block Construction: The AV receiver's power amplifier and preamplifier sections are separated inside the receiver's chassis to minimize interference and eliminate distortion.
    • WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): WRAT is based around a low negative-feedback circuit topology that works to reduce signal noise and distortion across the frequency range. A "closed ground-loop circuit" design is employed, in which each circuit has a separate link to the power supply. This helps to cancel individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion. High Instantaneous Current Capability (HICC) enables WRAT amplifiers to immediately cancel the speakers' reflex energy and instantaneously send out the next signal. The same high current better manages speaker impedance fluctuations, which can negatively affect performance. Wide Range Amp Technology
(WRAT) prevents phase shifting by pushing the roll-off point higher than the listening level frequency. Amplifying sound without phase shift creates an uncommonly clear, well focused, and realistic audio image.
    • 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry: The AV receiver incorporates 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry into all channels. This core Onkyo technology employs a low-NFB (negative feedback) design that makes the sound more natural.
    • Independent H.C.P.S. (High Current Power Supply): Under the anti-resonant cover of the Onkyo receiver, you'll instantly notice the High Current Power Supply (H.C.P.S.) transformer. With its huge, isolated power supply design and high-capacity filter capacitors, it delivers the large amounts of power necessary for reproducing the wide dynamics of movie soundtracks and the detail and clarity of your music.

Amplifier Assignment: The 7-channel amplifier can be configured in a variety of ways to match your type of speaker setup.

    • Normal (7.1ch): The Onkyo TX-RZ800 can be setup to provide anywhere from 2.1ch to 7.1ch surround in your main listening area. In 7.1ch mode, you can choose either Surround Back or Front Height speakers (but not both).
    • Bi-Amp (5.1ch): The Surround Back/Front-High channels can be reassigned and used along with the Front channels to bi-amp the front speakers, providing improved bass & treble performance. When bi-amping the front speakers the receiver is limited to a 2.1ch - 5.1ch speaker configuration in the main room (no Surround Back or Front Height speakers)
    • Powered Zone 2 (7.1ch): In this configuration, you can connect Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back (or Front Height), and Zone 2 speakers to the AV receiver. When Zone 2 is off, up to seven channels will be used in the Main Zone. However, when Zone 2 is on, power to the two surround back (or front height) channels will be directed to the two speakers in Zone 2 and the Main Zone will receive only up to five channels of power.
    • Dolby Atmos (5.1.2ch): The Surround-Back/Front-High speaker channels are assigned to power a pair of overhead ceiling speakers or a pair of Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers to create 5.1.2ch Dolby Atmos surround sound. Zone 2 speaker can still be powered by the receiver in this configuration. When Zone 2 is off, all seven channels will be used in the Main Zone for Dolby Atmos. However, when Zone 2 is on, power to the Dolby Atmos channels will be directed to the two speakers in Zone 2 and the Main Zone will be limited to 5.1ch without Dolby Atmos.
    • Dolby Atmos (7.1.2ch; requires external amp): The Surround-Back/Front-High speaker channels are assigned to power a pair of overhead ceiling speakers or a pair of Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers, while the receiver's Surround-Back/Front-High pre-outs along with an external amp are use to power a second pair of overhead ceiling speakers or a pair of Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers, to create 7.1.2ch Dolby Atmos surround sound. Zone 2 speaker can still be powered by the receiver in this configuration. When Zone 2 is off, all seven channels will be used in the Main Zone for Dolby Atmos. However, when Zone 2 is on, power to the Dolby Atmos channels will be directed to the two speakers in Zone 2 and the Main Zone will be limited to 5.1.2ch.

384kHz/32-Bit DAC + Signal Processing: The Onkyo TX-RZ800 utilizes one premium-quality AK4458 digital-to-analog converter from Asahi Kasei for all channels. This 384kHz/32-bit DAC implements unique low-distortion filtering technologies for clear sound, and unlocks the full potential of any audio format, including compressed, lossless, and hi-res audio (MP3, WMA, WMA Lossless, FLAC, WAV, OggVorbis, AAC, Apple Lossless, DSD 5.6 MHz, LPCM, and Dolby TrueHD). The TX-RZ800 offers additional DAC signal processing to make sure your movie & music soundtracks sound their best.

    • Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry (VLSC): Onkyo developed Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry (VLSC) to reassemble the signal in its original form following processing. Unlike conventional filters, VLSC removes pulse noise generated in D/A conversion, allowing the sound wave to be reproduced with extremely high fidelity for a smooth analog signal. The signal's data is converted between sampling points and joined with analog vectors in real time to produce a smooth output wave form. The result is a virtually noiseless, smooth, analog signal that brings out even the most subtle of nuances in music sources.
    • PLL (Phase Locked Loop) Jitter-Cleaning Circuit Technology: PLL jitter-cleaning circuit technology reduces jitter by comparing the input and output phases of the digital signal and creating an accurate clock waveform. This enhances the precision of digital signal processing and noticeably improves audio quality. Jitter-cleaning technology works both for digital signals input via HDMI and for digital signals converted from analog signals inside the receiver itself.

Dual 32-Bit DSP Engines & Multi-Channel Decoding: The receiver employs powerful and highly accurate Dual 32-bit processing DSP's (Digital Signal Processor) for better surround sound reproduction. The Onkyo TX-RZ800 AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

AccuEQ Room Calibration: Calibrating the sound to suit your room's acoustics is simple with Onkyo's AccuEQ auto-room calibration. Once you've connected your speakers, plug-in the included mic and wait a few moments as the TX-RZ800 measures things such as speaker distance, type, crossover, and output, taking into account any reflections from your walls and floor. The system is designed specifically to by-pass your front left and right speakers. The system then optimizes the frequency response of the remaining speakers so you can enjoy balanced surround sound regardless of room shape or furnishing while retaining the characteristics of your front left and right speakers for optimum enjoyment.

Immersive Surround Sound: The Onkyo TX-RZ800 AV receiver goes beyond regular surround with the latest immersive surround sound formats - like Dolby Atmos, Dolby Surround, DTS:X, and DTS Neural:X.

    • Dolby Atmos: With Dolby Atmos, sound comes alive from all directions, including overhead, to fill your home theater with astonishing clarity, power, detail, and depth. The TX-RZ800 has the processing power to run a more enveloping 5.1.2ch Dolby Atmos layout utilizing ceiling mounted or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers (sold separately). A 5.1.2ch speaker configuration is based upon a traditional 5.1 speaker layout complemented by 2 overhead or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers.
    • Dolby Surround: Dolby Surround offers an enhanced cinema experience to your Dolby Digital (Plus/TrueHD) and DTS (ES/HD) movie soundtracks using your existing 7.1ch or Dolby Atmos speaker setup. Dolby Surround enhances audio definition by improving the spatial dimension and overall audio definition of movie soundtracks. It does this by using four distinct surround zones that provide greater control over the exact placement of each detail in a movie sound track, so audio can be matched more accurately to the video on screen; this means more depth and greater realism for your movies. As a result, individual sounds are clearer and more distinct. It also improves the surround sound experience across the entire theater by widening the listening "sweet spot".
    • DTS:X (via future firmware update): DTS:X will be enabled through an online firmware update coming later this year. DTS:X is the next generation object-based, multi-dimensional audio technology from DTS. Unbound from channels, DTS:X conveys the fluid movement of sound to create an incredibly rich, realistic and immersive soundscape - in front of, behind, beside and above the audience - more accurately than ever before. DTS:X offers the ability to automatically adapt the audio to the speaker layout that best fits your space.
    • DTS Neural:X (via future firmware update): DTS Neural:X will be enabled through an online firmware update coming later this year. Further, DTS:X incorporates Neural:X, the latest spatial remapping technology from DTS, which provides a fully immersive output for all types of source content; this includes DTS bitstreams and non-encoded (PCM) data. Neural:X delivers a thrilling sense of immersive sound to your speaker layout regardless of the original source format.

THX Select 2 Plus Certified: The TX-RZ800 AV receiver is THX Select 2 Plus certified. Founded by George Lucas, THX develops stringent standards that ensure movies are reproduced in movie theaters and home theaters just as the director intended. From early design concepts to product rollout, THX works with its manufacturing partners at each step of product development. Every detail is meticulously mapped to the THX performance standards. And THX engineers spend countless hours testing and analyzing each product for sound quality, usability and interoperability. The result of this collaborative process is a THX Certified receiver, amplifier or pre-amplifier designed from the ground-up to present your favorite movies, music, and games in 5.1ch to 7.1ch surround sound loud and clear at studio reference volumes. THX Select 2 Plus is specified for rooms where the screen-to-seat viewing distance is 10-12' and the room volume is 3,000 cubic feet or greater. Additional features of THX Select 2 Plus certification includes:

    • Timbre Matching: The human ear changes our perception of a sound depending on the direction from which the sound is coming. In a movie theater, there is an array of surround speakers so that the surround information is all around you. In a home theater, you may only have two speakers located to the side of your head. In this case, the Timbre Matching feature filters the information going to the surround speakers so that they more closely match the tonal characteristics of the sound coming from the front speakers. This ensures seamless panning between the front and surround speakers.
    • Adaptive Decorrelation: In a movie theater, a large number of surround speakers help create an enveloping surround sound experience. If a home theater only has two sidewall surround speakers, the surround speakers may sound similar to headphones lacking spaciousness and envelopment. Surround sounds will also collapse toward the closet speaker as you move away from the middle seating position. Adaptive Decorrelation slightly changes one surround channel's time and phase relationship with respect to the other surround experience as in a movie theater using only two speakers.
    • Advanced Speaker Array: ASA is a proprietary THX technology which processes the audio on the two side and two back surround speakers for the optional surround sound experience. When you set up your home theater system using eight speaker outputs (Front Left, Center, Front Right, Surround Right, Surround Back Right, Surround Back Left, Surround Left, and Subwoofer), be sure to go to the THX Audio Setup screen and choose the setting that closely corresponds to the back speaker spacing. This will reoptimize the surround sound field. ASA is used in three modes: -THX Select2 Cinema, THX Select2 Music and THX Select2 Games.
    • THX Loudness Plus: THX Loudness Plus compensates for the tonal and spatial shifts that occur when the volume is reduced by intelligently adjusting ambient surround channel levels and frequency response. With THX Loudness Plus, home theater audiences can experience the rich details in a surround mix at any volume level.
    • Boundary Gain Compensation: If your listening room layout (for practical or aesthetic reasons) locates most of the listeners close to the rear wall, the resulting bass level can be sufficiently reinforced by the boundary that the overall sound becomes "boomy". THX Select2 Plus receivers contain a Boundary Gain Compensation (BGC) feature to improve bass balance.

Onkyo Original DSP Modes: Onkyo's Original DSP Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. You can choose from the following:

    • Orchestra: For classical or operatic music.
    • Unplugged: For acoustic instruments, vocals, and jazz.
    • Studio-Mix: Suitable for rock or pop.
    • TV Logic: Adds realistic acoustics to TV shows.
    • Game: The receiver offers four different Gaming modes - RPG, Action, Rock, and Sports.
    • All Ch Stereo: Stereo sound from all speakers. Ideal for background music.
    • Full Mono: All speakers output the same sound in mono.
    • Theater-Dimensional (T-D): Theater-Dimensional circuitry takes the complexity out of conventional surround-sound setups and lets you experience the excitement of surround sound from as few as two ordinary speakers. Theater-Dimensional's unique multi-speaker modes let you place up to five speakers conveniently by the TV, for the most realistic virtual-surround sound possible.

Audiophile Listening Modes: The Onkyo TX-RZ800 offers two audiophile listening modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. In Direct mode, audio from the input source is output without surround-sound processing. This mode delivers pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration. In Pure Audio mode, the display and video circuitry are turned off, minimizing possible noise sources for the ultimate in high-fidelity audio reproduction.

Surround Parameters: The Onkyo TX-RZ800 lets you tweak and fine tune specific surround sound modes to suit your preference.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust; Panorama: (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect), Dimension (allows you to move the sound field forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Center Spread: Adjusts the width of the soundfield of the front channels when playing in the Dolby Surround listening mode.
    • Listening Angle: While listening in the Theater Dimensional mode you can adjust the listening angle to either Wide (if listening angle is 40°) or Narrow (if listening angle is 20°).

Audio Enhancements: The Onkyo TX-RZ800 receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

    • Music Optimizer: The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sampling rate below 48kHz and analog input signals.
    • Dialog Control & Normalization: Dialog Control lets you increase the dialog portion of the audio in 1 dB steps up to 6 dB so that you can make dialog easier to hear over background noise. Dialog Normalization (DialogNorm) is a feature of Dolby Digital, which is used to keep the programs at the same average listening level so the user does not have to change the volume control between Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby TrueHD programs.
    • Late Night Feature: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: Off, Low, and High. This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature will vary based on the individual software package.

Bass Management: The Onkyo AV receiver offers Tone Control and Phase Matching Bass technology to get the most bass impact out of your system.

    • Tone Controls: You can independently adjust the Bass (50Hz) and Treble (20kHz) of the TX-RZ800 from -10 to +10 dB.
    • Phase Matching Bass: Onkyo's Phase-Matching Bass optimizes low frequencies while preserving mid-range clarity. This means that powerful bass plays back with clear vocals; it doesn't overpower them.
    • Double Bass: You can also activate the Double Bass function in order to boost bass output even more by feeding bass sounds to the front left/right speakers, center-channel, and powered subwoofer.

Volume Setup: The Onkyo AV receiver provides the following volume settings.

    • IntelliVolume: With IntelliVolume, you can set the input level for each input (+/-12dB) selector individually. This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others. This function does not work in Zone 2.
    • Maximum Volume: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from 30-79 (max), or Off (disabled).
    • Power On Volume: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Last (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Min (0), or 1-79.
    • Headphone Level: With this setting, you can specify the headphone volume (+/-12dB) relative to the main volume. This is useful if there's a volume difference between your speakers and your headphones.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Onkyo AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Assignable Digital Inputs: The Onkyo receiver is equipped with three optical digital inputs and two coaxial digital inputs. All digital inputs are assignable. You can choose auto decoding , PCM, or DTS for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel, while DTS decodes only DTS formatted sources.
    • Phono Input: The Onkyo AV receiver is fitted with a Phono input and ground terminal for connection of a turntable (MM).
    • Binding-Post Speaker Terminals: There are color-coded binding-post terminals for all speaker connections - Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back/Front Height, and Zone 2. The binding post terminals will accept bare-wire, pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). Use 4- to 16-ohm speakers.
    • 7.2ch Pre-Outs: The Onkyo TX-RZ800 features 7.2ch pre-outs(Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back/Front Height/Front Wide, and Dual Subwoofer) for connection of an external power amplifier. The pre-outs are variable. The dual sub outputs share the same input signal and are not discrete.
    • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.
    Video Section

HDMI 2.0a: The TX-RZ800 has eight HDMI 2.0 inputs (7 rear/1 front) and two HDMI 2.0a outputs for connecting Blu-ray/DVD players, Satellite/Cable boxes, Game Consoles, and other video components to your TV. The front HDMI input is fixed as the Aux input, while the seven rear-panel HDMI inputs are assignable to any of the other inputs. The dual HDMI outputs can simultaneously output the same audio/video signal to two TVs or you can assign the second HDMI output to Zone 2 to display a different HDMI source in another room (video is output at the resolution supported by both TVs). The HDMI jacks can accept and switch 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K video signals to a HDTV. All HDMI jacks will also support uncompressed standard or high definition digital video along with the following audio signals; 2-channel linear PCM, Multichannel linear PCM (up to 7.1ch), and Bitstream (Dolby Digital/DTS, etc.). Additional HDMI features include -

    • 4K (60Hz)/HDCP 2.2/4:4:4: The receiver's HDMI jacks supports the latest HDMI 2.0a specifications, plus HDCP 2.2 compatibility for the latest formats and technologies planned for Hollywood content (HDCP 2.2 is only supported on HDMI 1-5 inputs and both HDMI outputs). HDMI 2.0a offers a significant increase in bandwidth (up to 18Gbps) to support new features such as 4K@50/60 (2160p), which is 4x the clarity of 1080p/60 video resolution, and 4:4:4 color space for uncompressed color real-life color.
    • High Dynamic Range (HDR): This Onkyo AVR enables transmission of High Dynamic Range (HDR) formats, and provides enhanced picture quality by simultaneously enabling greater detail for both the dark and bright parts of an image (only available on HDMI 1-5 inputs and both monitor outputs).
    • Deep/x.v.Color Support: The receiver also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • 3D-Ready: All HDMI jacks will accept 3D video from your 3D-ready Blu-ray player and output the video signal in 3D via the receiver's HDMI monitor output to your 3D-ready flat-panel television.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): The receiver's main HDMI output features ARC (Audio Return Channel). This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television. The sub HDMI monitor output does not support this feature.
    • Auto Lip-Sync: The Lip-Sync function can automatically synchronize HDMI audio and video (for any HDMI jack) that has gotten out of sync due to the complex digital video processing being performed by your HDMI-compatible TV. With HDMI Lip-Sync, the audio delay required to synchronize the audio and video is calculated and applied automatically by the AV receiver. You can also manually correct the audio delay from 0 (no delay) to 500 milliseconds; in 5 millisecond steps.

Analog-to-HDMI Conversion: Analog composite and component video signals (480i only) input to the receiver will be converted to HDMI signals and then output to your receiver via HDMI. The resolution remains the same and is not upscaled.

HDMI Through: When enabling the HDMI Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "on" or in "standby" both audio and video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver HDMI monitor output. You can select between 3 HDMI Through functions modes.

    • Auto: Detects the signal and automatically selects the input sources.
    • Source: Selects the input source (BD/DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT, Game, PC, Aux, TV/CD, Port) for which the HDMI Through function in enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "standby" mode.

Analog Video Inputs: The receiver features three composite video inputs and one composite video monitor output which support 480i video signals only. There are also two component video inputs and one component video output which support up to 1080i video signal.

Video Select: It is possible to play audio and video from different sources. For example, you can play audio via Bluetooth and video from your BD/DVD player. This function is only effective when an input with audio only (Network, Bluetooth, or Tuner) has been selected initially.

    Network/USB/Tuner Functions

Wired or Wireless Network Connection: The Onkyo TX-RZ800 AV receiver supports a wired or wireless network connection. Via the AV receiver's network connection, you can enjoy music files stored on your computer and listen to internet radio through a variety of online services.

    Multiroom Playback

Zone 2 HDMI Output (Audio/Video): The Onkyo receiver also provides a Zone 2 HDMI output, so two different HDMI audio/video feeds can be sent to two different displays at the same time directly from the receiver (HDMI 1-5 connected input sources only). HDMI Zone 2 will output up to 4K video and 2-channel audio for the HDMI input source selected. Video will be output at the highest resolution supported by both TVs. If you have the same HDMI source playing back in the main room and Zone 2, then the main room is also limited to 2ch PCM audio.

    • Compatible Sources: HDMI 1-5 connected input sources only (up to 4K/2ch PCM).
    • Incompatible Sources: Tuner, Analog, USB, Bluetooth, Network, and Optical/Coaxial Digital audio sources; plus analog video sources.

Zone 2 Speaker- & Line-Level Output (Audio Only): Zone 2 features line-level and speaker audio outputs for playback of a different source in a second room. This way, Zone 2 can be powered by a separate amplifier (keeping 7.2ch playback in your main room) or by the TX-RZ800's built-in amplifier (limiting the main room to 5.2ch). When powering Zone 2 with the receiver's built-in amplifier, listening modes that require surround back or front high/wide speakers are unavailable. You cannot power Zone 2 with the receiver's built-in amplifier, if you are bi-amping your front speakers. The volume of Zone 2 can be controlled from the receiver when using the speaker outputs or line-level outputs, and from your add-on integrated amp when using the line-level outputs.

Zone 3 (Audio Only): Zone 3 allows playback of a separate source in 2-channel stereo in a third room of your home. Zone 3 features line-level outputs only. This way, Zone 3 can be powered by a separate integrated amplifier (keeping 7.2ch playback in your main room). The volume of Zone 3 is controlled by the separate integrated amp.

    • Compatible Sources: Tuner, Analog, USB, Bluetooth, and Network audio sources.
    • Incompatible Sources: Optical/coaxial digital audio sources, HDMI sources, and any video source.

    Zone 2/3 Notes:

    • With "Net" and "Bluetooth" sources, you cannot select different inputs for the main room and separate room. For example, if "Net" has been selected in the main room and then "Bluetooth" is selected as playback source in the separate room, the input in the main room will change to "Bluetooth" accordingly. Furthermore, you cannot select separate network services for the main room and a separate room with the "Net" input.
    • When listening to AM/FM broadcasting, you cannot select different stations for the main room and a separate room. Therefore broadcasting of the same station will be heard in the both rooms.
    • DSD audio cannot be played back in Zone 2 or Zone 3.

Whole House Mode: The Whole House Mode is useful when you want to simply add extra background music to your home party. This mode allows you to enjoy the same stereo music as the main room in separate rooms (Zone 2/3). The Whole House Mode selects the same input source for Zone 2/3 as the main room. During the Whole House Mode, stereo playback is automatically selected for all zones. The Main Zone & Zone 2 will play at the same volume level.

    Convenience Features

On-Screen Menu w/ Setup Assistance (via HDMI): The Onkyo AV receiver offers an on-screen menu system through its HDMI output. The simple on-screen display combines text and graphics that make setup and other operations extremely easy. The initial setup assistant takes you step-by-step through speaker configuration, source connection, remote programming, and network connection.

Gapless Playback: Many live and classical albums have no gaps in the music. Gapless playback ensures that there are no pauses between audio files. This provides playback with no interruptions, the way it was meant to be heard. Compatible with WAV, FLAC, and ALAC music files via USB or DLNA.

Name Edit: You can enter a custom name for each individual input selector and radio preset for easy identification. When entered, the custom name will appear on the display. This function cannot be used for the AM/FM, Network, USB, and Bluetooth input selectors.

Is the powered Zone 2 (speaker output) able to output content from digital sources? Other amplifiers, including past Onkyo models at this level, were only able to output to Zone 2 from analog sources.

Yes the TX-RZ800 will convert digital audio from all sources and pass them thru the zone 2 output. This only works with zone 2 as zone 3 does not allow de-embedding audio. If you use zone 3 you must connect analog audio from all sources.

No, the amplifiers for the height channels are retasked when bi-amp set up is used. I am unsure if is possible to hook a separate amplifier up to the pre-amp height out puts and have ATMOS work that way. The manual is not clear in this regard, but this is something you could explore. Decent receiver for the price it is now offered at.

I have Klipsch RP-280F floor standing front speakers which I bi-amped using the FRONT and HEIGHT outputs (per the instructions.) I would make sure that the effective (less than rated) wattage per channel in a 6.1 setup (5.1 + height) does not exceed the rated capacity of your RF-42IIs. (Check with Klipsch.) remember you are running TWO channels for your front speakers. After bi-amping I would run a new AccuEQ Room Calibration: RCV > SETUP > 8 > 2

This receiver has multiple input types that are assignable to multiple functions. I cannot imagine that it would not accommodate the audio. It would be best to talk to a Crutchfield representative about the video processing for 3D.

I just measured my unit and it confirms that this includes both the front buttons and the antennas in the back. The box alone is less than 400 mm.

It is 453 mm and you need clearance to plug equipment in the rear of receiver.

What is causing the difference in weight between the TX-RZ800 37.5 # and the TX-RZ810 30.9 #. Are the heat sinks the same size in both? Also how do you explain these power ratings: TX-RZ800 1 channel driven @ 6 ohms 185 watts. 135 watts 2 channel @ 8 ohms. TX-RZ810 1 channel driven @ 6 ohms 200 watts. 130 watts 2 channel driven @ 8 ohms. Is there any different in sound between the two receivers?

Will this support a single back speaker setup? I currently have a Denon AVR-3806 receiver connected to front Polk monitor 70s a center Polk cs2, rear l&r Polk r50 and a rear center cs2. These are all 8 ohm speakers. The woofer is a klipsch RW-12d. The Denon is great but it does not support HDMI greater than 1.1. I would like to just upgrade the receiver, will this meet all my existing speaker needs?

Read the specs. 8 ohm is not selectable during set up. You can set up the EQ per zone though. Hope this helps. Does take some time to set up. Mike

Not a good Idea....The TX-RZ800 is a 4 ohm system specifically designed for 4 ohm speakers...It will work ... and sound pretty good....but your receiver will shut down under higher volume and eventually blow relays...and for the price your paying for the system you'd be very upset when you blow it up...search for 8 ohm system or get 4 ohm speakers.

Is this receiver a true 7.1.2 Atmos receiver even with external amp? Avs forums is saying this amp can only do 5.1.2, you can have speakers connected like 7.1.2 with external amp, but there are never 9 channels of output from the receiver. At best it will do a true 5.1.2, and the back speakers on external will just play the same sound as the front heights. I've seen screen shots of the menu showing a 7.1.2 option, but they don't appear to be discrete beyond the 5.1.2. Any clarity on this would be great before purchasing.

Yes it is a true 7.1.2 receiver. You can connect a total of 9 speakers but you can only play 7 speakers at a time. You can switch between the height or the back speakers while playing a Dolby Atmos movie.

I tried to configure this receiver in 7.2.1 using an external amp and was not able to get it to produce true 7.2.1

This receiver is 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos mode with no back output. It automatically shuts down the back speakers and activate the height speakers in Dolby Atmos mode. However, you should be able to drive another set of speakers using the Back/Height preamp output. How will your system sound contrary to a true 7.1.2 Atmos system is anybody's guess. Please note using an additional amp to power two additional speakers as described above gives you two additional height speakers (in Dolby Atmos mode) or two additional rear speakers (when in any mode using the back speakers).

5.1.2 is the best I've been able to get from the receiver. . . you are correct. . the fronts and backs play the same sound. . . 6.1.2 set up ends up eliminating the center channel and using the fronts in stereo as well. Very picky receiver with regards to exceptions in set up.

I'm not the smartest in this field, so I hired a company to put in my system. They set it up as 7.1.2 and it is outstanding. I really hear a difference when watching the Game of Thrones. The reciever is great. I give it a 5 out 5. I hate the remote that comes with it, but the reciever is outstanding.

It is hard to answer this question without any details on your setup. What kind of speakers are you using for this receiver. If you go to setup and play with crossover settings, you will see that 80hz is the "THX" setting. Are your speakers capable of handling 80hz crossover with sub? Usually most decent home theater speakers can. If settings are correct and speakers are capable, you may have a faulty receiver. Best way to resolve this issue is to contact support and get you a replacement.

Crutchfield techs are really good at answering these questions. You may not have enough speakers needed for THX. You need 7.1 at least. You may need to back set up menu and start with speaker set up. Hope that helps.

If I purchase a set of Blue tooth speakers..can I send the sound to them from my Onkyo TX-RZ800 out to my garage?
    arthur  Mar 15, 2016

Sorry, no. The Bluetooth in the Onkyo is for receiving signals sent to it from your Bluetooth devices. It will not transmit audio wirelessly to Bluetooth speakers. For that, you may want to check out the Yamaha models that feature "MusicCast" but, keep in mind; Bluetooth has a limited range so if your garage speakers will be far away from the receiver, you may need to consider a different solution. I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

I have 8 ohm speakers, however, in the speaker settings it will only allow you to choose either 4 ohm or 6 ohm. Has anyone else noticed this or will this be an issue?

I understand the receiver handles 8 ohm speakers without any issue and with no special alteration to the default settings (at, I believe, 135 watts per channel). An alteration must be made by changing a setting on the impedance, however, when the speakers are between 4 and 6 ohms.
    geoffrey  Mar 17, 2016

    Set it to 6 ohm.
    brad  Mar 15, 2016

The explanation in the manual is confusing. I have a mixture of 4 and 8 ohm speakers. For 4 ohm speakers set the type to 4 ohm. For 6 ohm or higher impedances use 6 ohm setting. Do not connect 4 and 8 ohm speakers, together, on the same binding posts, then you might blow some output devices.

The Onkyo Rz800 will handle 8ohm just fine the 6ohm setting is for 6ohm or above which includes 8ohm . I have hooked up a set of klipsh r26 towers in the front 8ohm and a set of Polk 330 towers 8 ohm in the surround . I must tell you this rz800 pushes these speakers without trying I have turned it up past comfort level for several minutes with no clipping or heat issues sound quality is superb. Originally I purchased a Denon 2200 which did not have enough power to push my speakers into their potential the Onkyo does this with ease I believe it will push anything you throw at it.

Hi Barry..you can hook up the 8 ohm speakers to either 4 or 6 ohm but you run the risk of blowing the speakers because of the higher power driven to them at higher volume....More then likely your stereo will shut down through the relay....therefore weakining the relay and eventually burning out componants inside the receiver...Be carefull ! ....Best suggestion is to use 4/6 ohm as soon as possible...even a good set of car speakers will work untill you get a set of matching ohm speakers....Another possibility is to use 2 sets of speakers where you hook up possitive input to one speaker and neg input to the other ..then crossover the 2 remaining speakers inputs...Do this to the left channel..separatly from the right channel ....this will reduse the 8 ohm to 4 ohm impedence.....Due to the cost of the receiver...4 ohm speakers will be your best cure....unless you completly understand the 2 speaker method...I have the same unit and an older 4 ohm Onkyo and both work fine using the 2 sets of speaker method.....Good luck

I have used 130w 8ohms speakers with the Onkyo TX-RZ800 and from my experience with the receiver, it is not an issue. I did notice that it would only allow you to choose 4 or 6 ohms, but I found that it did not impact the audio quality because it sounds similar if not the same as the Onkyo TX-NR747 which also allows you to choose 4 or 6ohms as well. I have owned and tested both units and to my ears, no difference in audio.

Great question for Crutchfield to follow up on. Assuming the default would be 8 due to having a choice of 4 and 6 ohms. Great question.

If you run a RCA cable from the height pre-out from the back of the receiver and connect it to an 4 channel amplifier all for speakers will play in Dolby Atmos mode. Also, if you connect 2 speakers each to both left and right height speaker terminals, all 4 speakers would play in Dolby Atmos mode; but use caution especially when playing at extremely high volume for extremely prolong periods. Honestly, I would suggest the first method I mentioned.
