About the Onkyo TX-8020

David Brown

No digital, no networking — just pure analog sweetness

Not everything has to be complicated. Sometimes you just need a simple way to deliver music to your speakers with robust power and minimal interference. That's what the all-analog Onkyo TX-8020 does well — and at an extremely affordable price. This stereo receiver isn't loaded down with all the bells and whistles you'll find on more expensive home theater receivers. But what it does have is Onkyo's well-regarded high-current, low-impedance amplifier technology. It ensures that the TX-8020 delivers clean sound with very low distortion. That's what makes those details pop in your music and makes your speakers really shine. And that's why our customers love Onkyo.

Connect a turntable, subwoofer, and a second pair of speakers

The TX-8020 receiver is perfect for your TV room, office, bedroom, or anyplace else with a pair of speakers in search of music. There are inputs for up to six components, including a turntable thanks to the built-in phono preamp. You can also connect a powered subwoofer to the preamp output on the rear panel. And if you've got an extra pair of efficient speakers, connect them to this receiver, place them in the next room, and use the front-panel A/B switch to let the '8020 pull double duty and power both sets — either separately or simultaneously.

Well, if you insist...

If you can't resist the urge to add some wireless digital capabilities to the TX-8020, pick up the optional Onkyo DS-A5 dock for your iPod®,  iPhone®, or iPad®. You can use it to connect and charge your Apple device. Or keep your iPhone in hand and use the dock as an AirPlay® receiver for wireless music streaming.

WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): The Onkyo TX-8020 Stereo Receiver features WRAT technology that uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks. The Onkyo TX-8020's discrete stereo amplifier is rated at 50W x 2ch (8Ω, 20-20kHz, 0.08% THD).

Tone Control: The Onkyo TX-8020 offers independent Bass (+/-10dB @ 50Hz) & Treble (+/-10 @ 20kHz) control to fine-tune your music. You can also balance your music from left to right.

Analog Audio Inputs/Output: The TX-80520 is equipped with six analog audio inputs and one analog audio input. This receiver contains no digital inputs/outputs.

Phono Input: Included in the six analog audio inputs, is a Phono (MM) input with ground terminal.

A & B Speaker Terminals: The Onkyo TX-8020 stereo receiver is equipped with A & B speaker terminals to connect up to two pair of speakers. The receiver uses binding post connectors for the A & B speaker outputs. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs; they will accept bare wire, pin connectors, and single banana plugs (spaced too far apart for dual bananas).

Note: If you're using only one of the speaker sets (A or B), choose the 4Ω setting if each speaker's impedance is 4Ω to less than 6Ω, or choose the 6Ω setting if each speaker's impedance is 6Ω or more. If you're using both of the speaker sets (A & B), choose the 4Ω setting if each speaker's impedance is 8 to 16Ω.

Subwoofer Pre-Out: The Onkyo TX-8020 stereo receiver is equipped with a mono subwoofer preamp output to connect a powered subwoofer.

Headphone Jack: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front-panel, the A & B main speakers are automatically muted.

AM/FM Tuner: The Onkyo TX-8020 stereo receiver features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning. You can store your favorite stations as presets for quick selection. You can store a combination of up to 40 of your favorite FM/AM radio stations as presets. You can then label each preset with a 10 character name. The TX-8020 also lets you directly tune in AM/FM stations using its remote control.

Convenience Features

IR Remote w/ RI Remote Control Jack: The included IR remote control operates this unit & compatible Onkyo cassette players and CD players. The 1/8" RI remote control jack allows you to connect this receiver to compatible Onkyo components.

Display Dimmer: The display brightness has three settings; Dim, Dimmer, and Normal.

Sleep Timer: From the remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after as much as 90 minutes or as little as 10 minutes; choices are presented in 10 minute increments.

Auto Standby: The stereo receiver will automatically go into Standby mode, if there is no operation for 30 minutes with no audio/video signal input.

Customer Q&A

Q
I have an equalizer, stereo expander and a DBX noise reduction unit. Can I have all three of these in the sound circuit at the same time or does the unit force you to only choose one input at a time?
stephen  Mar 06, 2014

A
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your current gear. They will be able to pull up the receiver and see if your gear will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Where is the best place to connect a mic?

I do not know but the Deck is Great. I'm really enjoying it. I got a pair of Polk bookshelf speakers and I could not be more happy with the sound.

Sorry, but I can't answer your question. I just have the usual audio equipment: CD player, tape player, and turntable, and I've never tried to do that.
john  Mar 08, 2014
A
There is not specific input for a mic. You would probably need a preamp for the mic, then input into TV, DVD or any unused input.

Good morning Don, I cannot answer your question because mic not used here. Crutchfield has friendly, informed people that can help you, I'm sure. Good luck, Cathy

A good receiver but never needed to use a mic

Q
how is the fm receiption on the tx 8020 compared to the tx 8255?
roy  Dec 10, 2013

A
I have had the 8020 for about 3 weeks. I did not own an 8255 so I can't compare. I can tell you the FM reception on my 8020 is outstanding. I have it in a room in a lower level and the reception is great - quick to tune and no static at all.
duane m  Dec 12, 2013
A
There is no reception.
