A receiver for fans of both digital and analog music

You still have a turntable and maybe a cassette deck, but you're not living in the past. Your collection includes today's digital music formats as well. And this has made finding the right receiver a real challenge — until now.

For years, Onkyo's stereo receivers have won raves from our customers for their terrific sound quality. The TX-8050 boasts 80 watts per channel of clean, high-current power to deliver a powerful sonic punch that's sure to satisfy. Sure, it has RCA inputs for your turntable and cassette deck but the '8050 also boasts a full complement of analog video and digital audio inputs. Plus it adds the connections you need for today's music sources.

Give your iPod® a front-row seat

A music library used to take two friends and a moving van to carry around. Now you can simply put it in your pocket. The TX-8050's front-panel USB port beckons your iPod to come hither. Its direct digital connection bypasses the iPods processing in favor of a 32-bit chip that can make your higher bit-rate music files sound closer to the original CD. Plus, you can download a free app that lets you use your iPhone® as a convenient Wi-Fi® remote with your connected receiver.

Network- and Internet-ready

Tap in to your home network and enjoy music stored on your PC through your main system, instead of through pint-sized computer speakers. And if you have a Wi-Fi® network, you can use the optional Onkyo USB adapter. Choose from thousands of Internet radio stations — or let PANDORA® Internet radio create a set of customized "stations" based on your own tastes.

Finally — a not-too-bright idea

You've seen it before. How could you not? Receiver displays so intense they could be used to warn ships at sea of potential hazards. Yet your living room is not exactly a craggy shoal. The TX-8050 display has three settings — normal, dim and dimmer. Now when you want to turn the lights down for atmosphere, your receiver will go as easy on your eyes as it does on your ears.

High-Quality Sound: The Onkyo TX-8050 network stereo receiver employs a host of technologies to ensure optimal audio performance.

  • WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks.
  • Low Negative Feed Back Design: Too much NFB (negative feed back) makes a system susceptible to counter-electromotive force from the speakers, resulting in a drop in perceived sound quality. To avoid this, Onkyo focuses on improving the frequency response and reducing distortion, without relying so much on NFB.
  • Closed Ground-Loop Circuits: The TX-8050 employs a sophisticated cloAsed-circuit design in which each circuit has a separate link to the power supply. This helps to cancel individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion.
  • HICC (High Instantaneous-Current Capability): HICC enables an amplifier to immediately cancel the speakers' reflex energy and instantaneously send out the next signal. The same high current required to achieve this also supports the amplifier's ability to handle speaker impedance fluctuations.

Anti-Vibration Chassis: The Onkyo TX-8050 features an aluminum front-panel & anti-vibration oval chassis to prevent resonance which could lead to distortion.

Discrete Amplifier Design: The Onkyo TX-8050 stereo receiver features a discrete amplifier design with massive EI transformer. The stereo amplifier is rated at 80W x 2ch (8Ω, 20-20kHz, 0.08% THD).

Listening Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of stereo listening modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your music.

Listening Mode Description
Stereo Sound is output by the front left & right speakers, plus subwoofer with tone control.
Music Optimizer The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sampling rate below 48kHz and analog input signals
Direct In this mode, audio from the input source is output without any additional audio processing. This mode delivers pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration.
Pure Audio In this mode, the display and video circuitry are turned off and the tone controls are bypassed, minimizing possible noise sources for the ultimate in high-fidelity reproduction.
Mono Use this mode when watching an old movie with a mono soundtrack.

Tone Control: The Onkyo TX-8050 offers independent Bass (+/-10dB @ 50Hz) & Treble (+/-10 @ 20kHz) control to fine-tune your music.

IntelliVolume: The IntelliVolume setup function allows you set a volume correction value for each source, to prevent large jumps in volume when switching from one source to another. This feature eliminates the inconvenience of manually readjusting the volume control each time you switch from a source with a weak signal to a source with a strong signal and vice versa.

A & B Speaker Terminals: The Onkyo TX-8050 stereo receiver is equipped with A & B speaker terminals to connect up to two pair of speakers. The receiver uses binding post connectors for the A & B speaker outputs. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs; they will accept bare wire, pin connectors, single banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.

Impedance Switch: If you're using only one of the speaker sets (A or B), choose the 4Ω setting if each speaker's impedance is 4Ω to less than 6Ω, or choose the 6Ω setting if each speaker's impedance is 6Ω or more. If you're using both of the speaker sets (A & B), choose the 4Ω setting if each speaker's impedance is 8 to 16Ω.

Analog Audio Inputs/Outputs: The TX-8050 is equipped with 7 analog audio inputs (3 audio only/4 AV in). There is also two analog audio outputs (1 audio only/1 AV out).

Phono Input: Included in the 7 analog audio inputs, is a Phono (MM) input with ground terminal.

Digital Inputs: The Onkyo network stereo receiver features 4 digital audio inputs. There are 2 optical (toslink) digital inputs and 2 coaxial (RCA) digital inputs. The receiver's digital inputs do not support multichannel audio signal; PCM signal only.

Preamp Outputs: The Onkyo TX-8050 network stereo receiver employs a mono-subwoofer preamp output, a stereo preamp output, and a Zone2 preamp output.

  • Subwoofer Pre-Out: The Onkyo TX-8050 network stereo receiver is equipped with a mono subwoofer preamp output to connect a powered subwoofer.
  • Stereo Pre-Out: If you want to use a separate power amplifier and use the receiver as a preamp, simply connect the receiver's stereo preamp-output to your amp's input, and connect all speakers to the power amplifier.
  • Zone2: Zone 2 pre-outs on the TX-8050 allow you to send a stereo audio signal to a second room equipped with an amplifier and a pair of speakers. You can either enjoy the same source in both rooms, or play a different source in Zone 2. You can choose from analog, USB, or Network sources. Digital inputs (both optical/coaxial) cannot be output to Zone 2. You are able to adjust the volume from either the Onkyo stereo receiver or from your Zone 2 integrated amplifier.

Note: You must currently be listening to a USB device or Network audio source in the Main Zone to initially select USB or Network as a source in Zone 2 or Zone 3. Then you can switch the Main Zone to any source you desire. You cannot select different AM/FM radio stations or listen to USB and Network content in separate Zones at the same time.

Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, the A & B main speakers are automatically muted (the Powered Zone 2 speakers are not muted). When you connect an iPod or iPhone to the USB port on this receiver, no sound will be output from the headphone jack.

Video Section

Composite Video: Although not a surround sound receiver, the TX-8050 does employ composite video inputs & outputs; so it can be used in a basic A/V system.

  • 4 Composite Video Inputs: There are 4 composite video inputs to connect your audio/video devices to the receiver.
  • Composite Video Record Output: There is a single composite video record output for recording purposes.
  • Composite Video Monitor Output: There is a single composite video monitor output to connect to your television.

Note: The TX-8050 does not contain any S-video, component video, or HDMI inputs/outputs.

Network & Tuner Functions

Network-Ready: The Onkyo TX-8050 stereo receiver is network-ready, which means you can connect it to your home network with a standard Ethernet cable and enjoy the music files stored on your computer or media server. If your network is connected to the Internet (broadband), you can also enjoy Internet radio.

Optional Wi-Fi Adapter: The TX-8050 is compatible with the UWF-1 Wireless LAN adapter, allowing you to connect to a wireless network. The UWF-1 operates on the 2.4 GHz wireless transmission frequency, and supports IEEE 802.11 b/g/n. The adapter features a Type A USB plug and connects to the USB port on the front of the receiver.

Q
Can I play music using a flashdrive through the usb port on this Onkyo tx 8080 stereo receiver?
jim  Nov 26, 2015
1 answer
A
I have not tried but I believe so. I will tell you that I have been very disappointed in the receivers network capabilities so much so that I could not recommend purchase of this receiver. Onkyo customer support is worthless!

Q
If you hook up your tv via the optical digital connection, will you get 2-channel sound, even though the programming may be surround?
clifton  Oct 19, 2015
1 answer
A
The Onkyo receiver's digital inputs do not support multichannel audio signals, it would only accept 2-channel PCM from your TV.

Q
Can I plug this into an XM outdoor antenna? Spotty to no internet where we are installing.
shane  Sep 23, 2015
1 answer
A
No, because the XM outdoor antenna must be connected to an XM receiver interface in order to process the XM digital signal. This Onkyo unit does not contain an XM receiver.

Does the Sirius XM require an external adapter or can it access my web account via Internet connection?

I haven't used internet hook up but I'm eventually going to. I understand that you can hook it up directly. I have done some research and will use the WiFi hookup. I think the Crutchfield tech guys have the answer for this. I wish there was a way could get back in touch with me and let me know if you get it to work. I'm going to keep this contact and will let you know when I hook mine up later this summer.
allen b  Jun 17, 2015
A
You just connect an Ethernet cable from your router or modem into the receiver and select Sirius using your remote or the knob on the receiver
ronald  Jun 17, 2015
Q
It's a nice unit. I don't like the fact that after 6-7 hours it goes inactive and requires the operator to press the enter button to continue play. We stream XM & Pandora in my office. Is there a way to bypass the inactivity setting? Thanks.

Does this receiver allow me to play SEPARATE audio content simultaneously in the different zones? Will I need an additional amplifier for Zone 2?
lotticus  May 05, 2015

A
Yes you can listen to seperate audio on each zone without a separate amp (5.1 in zone one and stereo in zone 2 ) you can only use the net audio in one zone at a time.
ryan  May 14, 2015
A
No. this supports two sets of speakers, but only one output. I have one pair in my living room and the other outside on the back deck.

I already had a Niles box to play my speakers separately. I am away this week but you should feel free to email me again next week It's a nice receiver but could benefit from better lettering on the unit since I keep mine in a cabinet where the light isn't great

Hi Kelli, Unfortunately it is not blue tooth enabled. Hope this helps!

No it does not come with bluetooth, but aftermarket devices can be used with this receiver. It has a radio jack in the back for a device and a usb port in the front to add device. Wireless speakers can be added as well. I grew up buying receivers and this one is awesome and will probably be the last one I buy. Hope this helps. Daniel
daniel  Mar 26, 2015
A
The receiver acts as a Bluetooth receiver. Not sure if it works as a Bluetooth transmitter. Ie. Just like Bluetooth in a car, your phone or handheld device can connect to it via Bluetooth. Hope this helps.
guy  Mar 26, 2015
A
sorry no bluetooth, however for $30 range you can get an adaptor for bluetooth runs off ac power the other end ( 2 rca plugs ) connects to one of your input jacks in rear of receiver. the more bad news is that is for music sources only i.e tablet, laptop, smartphone etc. I don't believe you would be able to convert and or use bluetooth speakers with this adaptor.
ronald l  Mar 25, 2015

No, it doesn't have Bluetooth.

Q
Can anyone confirm through their own experience that one can connect a portable USB hard drive to this receiver and play the music on the drive? Thanks.
blamo  Mar 02, 2015
2 answers
A
Yes you can. I bought a 1 Terabyte portable hard drive and put all my music on it and use it exclusively at home. The receiver reads the drive upon startup when set to USB, and the remote selects the music on the drive and is easy to use.
james  Mar 03, 2015
A
I don't see why the USB connected hard drive will not work as an I- Pod is essentially the same thing. The only thing is whether or not there is some software built into the receiver that allows it to recognize playlists, etc.. When I hook my I-Pod up using the USB, the receiver "takes control" of the Pod and any changes must be made using the receiver's remote control. So, the question isn't whether or not music can be played from the hard drive, but whether or not it can be "controlled" by the receiver in the same way that an I Pod is controlled during play back. The Onkyo 8050 is a very nice piece of equipment and a tremendous value. If it suits your needs, I am sure you will like it!

Q
I am looking for a receiver that will accept an EQ. On my 80's era receiver I connected the eq to the tape in/out. If I wanted any signal to be eq'ued I would just click the tape monitor. Can this receiver do the same?

A
Yes in the same way the 80's receiver did.

This unit does not have a monitor loop for connecting an external EQ. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help you find a receiver that has a monitor loop.

Can this amp turn on speaker A or B individually or do they have to be played simultaneously?
shawn  Nov 15, 2014

A
This amp can turn on speaker A, or B, or both. If your playing from speaker A and press B, you'll notice the display will open both circuits. Press B again and A will be turned off and only B will play. Same the other way. This is a great amp and receiver. I'm old school hifi and I love this unit, my 30 year old receiver went bad and I really wanted something like it or better. Great machine for the money.

A and B are two separate speaker sets and can be used independently from one another as well as simultaneously.

You can do it either way. There is a button for A speakers and a button for B speakers. There is also a button for zone. I don't mean to be a downer, but if you're not pretty tech savvy, it might be difficult to set up and use. Don't get me wrong, it is a great unit, but every time I go out to the garage, it takes me a bit to figure it out again. All and all, I think this thing is pretty cool

Hi Shawn, this amp can run both a abd b at the same time, or they can be played individually! That being said, you can play "a" for a set of outdoor deck speaker, and then if your party moves inside, you can click and change the speakers to "b" and play through the indoor bookshelve speakers. Or maybe your listening to some good tunes and are going in/out of the house a lot, you can play both zones at once. The output is 80rms and I have them matched up with two speakers per zone, rated for the 80rms, they sound GREAT! Hopefully this really long response helps to answer your question, happy buying!

Is this receiver made in China (like so many others)?
garfy  Oct 27, 2014

A
Nope. Mine was made in Malaysia. Who knows where the next one is made. I'm not using it right now but when we used it we liked it a lot. Did not use the streaming feature as I couldn't figure it out. Used the cassette deck, reel to reel tape deck, tuner, phono, CD features and drove two sets of AR speakers. It does NOT have 110V plug-ins so I had to buy a strip that I plugged everything else in so they would go off when I used the sleep mode. Probably more than you wanted to know. Hope this helps. Cheers

Yes, through the front panel USB port. I have played my iPod before, no issues. I just plugged in my iPhone 5 and no issues either. The playlist will scroll up and you can use the remote to control the files (artist, album, etc.).

Yes, the Onkyo TX-8050 is a great unit for USB connectivity. I use my iPod and it stays charged instead of worrying about it running out of battery power. The sound is crystal clear. You can play, pause and skip using the remote.

I am looking for a receiver to utilize in my living room to power 2 small bookshelf speakers for low-mid volume music -- not really for home theater. I also have 2 outdoor bookshelf sized outdoor speakers facing out pool. With the addition of a speaker selector w volume controls, could this Onkyo receiver be a solution for me?
brett  Mar 11, 2014

This receiver should work well for you. You are able to connect speakers in 2 zones. This should let you connect your indoor and outdoor speakers. I have been very happy with this purchase. I also am very appreciative of Crutchfield's high level of customer service.
randy  Mar 12, 2014
A
The answer would be definitely yes, I'm using the receiver amp for same reason. I do not listen to my music or any broadcast at ear shattering volume so this receiver I think is perfect. I utilize the receiver in my garage which of course powers the garage speakers, and with the handy A B speaker control, I also have my outdoor patio speakers oh and this unit allows you to play both channel A and B at same time and also I think the power or wattage of this receiver is very effective and more than enough.
ronald l  Mar 12, 2014

Absolutely! Trust me, you will be happy with this one. I loaded a flash drive with all my favorite tunes and I can listen for 24+ hours before it repeats. No need for a CD player!

Brett, Absolutely. I bought this receiver last May, for almost exactly the same purpose. I use it to power a pair of Klipsch KG 1.5 speakers on my patio area. Old speakers, but they still sound fantastic. There is plenty of power (and more to spare) to hear music clearly from the patio all the way back to the house which is about 150 feet. I am very happy with it, and I feel that this would be an excellent choice, especially at this price point, to accomplish the goal you have described. Hope it works for you. Jim
neelam  Mar 12, 2014
A
Absolutely.....Don't forget that by using the (free) Remote 2 application you can use your smart phone, ipad, or ipod to wirelessly operate the receiver to play the speakers in either zone. I use mine to operate outside speakers on my patio. I purchased the bose exterior speakers and i turn them on and listen to music and turn it up and down using my iphone thru the Onkyo TX-805 inside in my office.
john  Mar 12, 2014

I am running two pairs of small Polk bookshelf speakers and a Polk powered Subwoofer with no problems from the Onkyo TX-8050. I think as long as you are using a selector switch that only lets you run the two pairs and not three It should work very well for you. I like this receiver a lot, it is straight forward to operate and sounds great. I hope that helps.
vincent j  Mar 12, 2014
A
Brett; That is exactly the situation I have and my choices were somewhat limited when shopping for a new receiver with a basic A/B stereo switch without all the extra channels of a home theater receiver. The Onkyo works perfectly that for that flexibility. I have a powered sub indoors and I get great sound indoors and out, and it seems really well balanced in spite of the different speaker combinations, even at different volumes. If I really crank it up I turn off the outdoor speakers to spare the neighbors. I can even use the Onkyo remote from my outside porch thru the sliding glass doors. plus I plugged in an inexpensive bluetooth receiver on an empty input and I can play music from my tablet outside - if I keep it pretty close to the door (30' -35' from the Onkyo thru glass) Have not had any problems with it. Hope that helps. Jim
james  Mar 12, 2014
A
Yes. However, I find this receiver to be non-user friendly. I purchased it for its' network capability and internet radio feature. I have it wired to my home network and I am able to play music from the net and also from my PC hard drive. My dissatisfaction comes from the complexity in tuning into radio stations or my PC. Otherwise, sound quality is acceptable.

Q
I am going to purchase this receiver, but am a bit confused about speakers. I've had several good recommendations, but would like to hear what those of you who have this receiver use. I'm looking for something for stereo music listening only with a good amount of base. I like it loud. What speakers do you use with it?
patricia  Feb 28, 2014
4 answers
A
Pat, I believe that speaker selection, like a beer, wine, etc is a personal choice. We are born with a certain amount of sensory cells and around age 18 it begins to diminish. and If you were subjected to very high decibel levels, sirens, jet engines, rock concerts, your hearing will more than likely, never be able to hear every frequency that a good set of speakers put out. You simply have to go out and listen to a range of speakers within your price range. At age 61 I might find that a set of Moon Audio-Dark Star speakers at over one million dollars may not sound as good as a 1500 dollar set of Polk Audio. There are many many variables. Hope this helps. Robert D
robert  Mar 06, 2014
A
If you listen to anything more than straight stereo music, like, vid etc. you have to add a powered sub woofer. This is a lower powered amp, but sounds great. I'm running a 7.1, approximately, 1200w. through a bunch of cerwin-vega and bose. Volume requires power. You can run these guys at 60% all day long, but go to 90+ and you'll blow them up. Base will suck up 65-70% of your power, and that's what makes it loud.

I own two of these receivers. Drive pair of Infiniti Primus 163 with one and pair of Polk RTiA3 with the other. Both sound good - Polk probably better speaker, but Infiniti sounds a little brighter and maybe the Onkyo is "happier" driving them compared with the Polks? This is an excellent receiver and an outstanding value, but not especially powerful so if you like your music loud, you will want to purchase efficient speakers or maybe step-up to a more powerful amp. Check out the Onkyo integrated amp that Crutchfield sells - might be a better option for you? That said, I love the TX-8050, I use it to listen to CD, TV, Satellite Radio, and I-Pod. But I don't listen a really high volume levels and don't care that much about strong bass. I would recommend purchasing the best, most efficient, speakers your budget will allow and I'll bet the TX-8050 will do the job for you.

Q
I have a question about using a subwoofer. I see it has a dedicated 'sub out', but does the receiver have a crossover control?
paul  Jan 23, 2014
3 answers
A
Good question. I do not see any crossover control for the subwoofer output in the set-up menu or discussed in the owners manual. The subwoofer output is included under the Pre-Out connections. I have not used the subwoofer output, only stereo speakers are connected. Obviously, there are tone controls for bass and treble, and I assume they would affect the signal to the Pre-Out connections, including the subwoofer output. The owners manual discusses using the receiver as pre-amp and connecting to a power amp. You can control the bass and treble on the Zone 2 outputs in the set-up menu but I assume this is separate signal from the Pre-Out connections. I hope this helps. This is an excellent stereo receiver. Plenty of bass from my JBL stereo speakers.

You need to have an input device that has internet access. I commonly use an IPOD or an IPAD connected through the USB Input on the front panel. Since both of these devices are bluetooth they connect to the internet through my wireless router and let me use Spotify or Pandora, etc. to listen to music. I hope that helps.
vincent j  Dec 16, 2013

I have found this unit to be extremely non-user friendly when it comes to operation. I use the remote to access Sirius Radio or my home network that is hard wired to the receiver. I can play music stored on my PC hard drive through this unit. However, it is not the most friendly operation and I have only been able to control via the remote. As for internet radio stations, there is an internet button on the remote and then you can scroll through several internet stations. I would imagine that you need to be hardwired to your home network to access these stations as well (I don't listen to them). There is a feature to store favorite stations but I haven't yet done that. Maybe if I did, I wouldn't be so frustrated with the operation every time I want to switch from Sirius to my home music library and back.

I run optical cable from CD player and TV - use audio out from TV and assign TV output to one of the optical inputs on Onkyo. Keep sound turned off on TV - select "TV " input with Onkyo remote and enjoy quality TV sound from the TX-8050. Hope this helps.
matthew  Dec 09, 2013

Hi, This receiver would not be best suited to handle your video processing needs...it could process video via an analog cable but the receiver carries most of its weight as network ready am/fm receiver. I use mine to power my in-wall speakers and deck speakers using a sonos through optical cable for the digital music. Regarding the sound an optical cable is the best way to go in the absence of HDMI. Great product and I'm a long time consumer of Onkyo I just wouldn't describe this unit as appealing to the masses for a home entertainment receiver. For those needs, HDMI connections would be a must! Hope this helps!
