About the Onkyo TX-8050
A receiver for fans of both digital and analog music
A receiver for fans of both digital and analog music
You still have a turntable and maybe a cassette deck, but you're not living in the past. Your collection includes today's digital music formats as well. And this has made finding the right receiver a real challenge — until now.
For years, Onkyo's stereo receivers have won raves from our customers for their terrific sound quality. The TX-8050 boasts 80 watts per channel of clean, high-current power to deliver a powerful sonic punch that's sure to satisfy. Sure, it has RCA inputs for your turntable and cassette deck but the '8050 also boasts a full complement of analog video and digital audio inputs. Plus it adds the connections you need for today's music sources.
Give your iPod® a front-row seat
A music library used to take two friends and a moving van to carry around. Now you can simply put it in your pocket. The TX-8050's front-panel USB port beckons your iPod to come hither. Its direct digital connection bypasses the iPods processing in favor of a 32-bit chip that can make your higher bit-rate music files sound closer to the original CD. Plus, you can download a free app that lets you use your iPhone® as a convenient Wi-Fi® remote with your connected receiver.
Network- and Internet-ready
Tap in to your home network and enjoy music stored on your PC through your main system, instead of through pint-sized computer speakers. And if you have a Wi-Fi® network, you can use the optional Onkyo USB adapter. Choose from thousands of Internet radio stations — or let PANDORA® Internet radio create a set of customized "stations" based on your own tastes.
Finally — a not-too-bright idea
You've seen it before. How could you not? Receiver displays so intense they could be used to warn ships at sea of potential hazards. Yet your living room is not exactly a craggy shoal. The TX-8050 display has three settings — normal, dim and dimmer. Now when you want to turn the lights down for atmosphere, your receiver will go as easy on your eyes as it does on your ears.

High-Quality Sound: The Onkyo TX-8050 network stereo receiver employs a host of technologies to ensure optimal audio performance.
- WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks.
- Low Negative Feed Back Design: Too much NFB (negative feed back) makes a system susceptible to counter-electromotive force from the speakers, resulting in a drop in perceived sound quality. To avoid this, Onkyo focuses on improving the frequency response and reducing distortion, without relying so much on NFB.
- Closed Ground-Loop Circuits: The TX-8050 employs a sophisticated cloAsed-circuit design in which each circuit has a separate link to the power supply. This helps to cancel individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion.
- HICC (High Instantaneous-Current Capability): HICC enables an amplifier to immediately cancel the speakers' reflex energy and instantaneously send out the next signal. The same high current required to achieve this also supports the amplifier's ability to handle speaker impedance fluctuations.
Anti-Vibration Chassis: The Onkyo TX-8050 features an aluminum front-panel & anti-vibration oval chassis to prevent resonance which could lead to distortion.
Discrete Amplifier Design: The Onkyo TX-8050 stereo receiver features a discrete amplifier design with massive EI transformer. The stereo amplifier is rated at 80W x 2ch (8Ω, 20-20kHz, 0.08% THD).
Listening Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of stereo listening modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your music.
Listening Mode | Description |
---|---|
Stereo | Sound is output by the front left & right speakers, plus subwoofer with tone control. |
Music Optimizer | The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sampling rate below 48kHz and analog input signals |
Direct | In this mode, audio from the input source is output without any additional audio processing. This mode delivers pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration. |
Pure Audio | In this mode, the display and video circuitry are turned off and the tone controls are bypassed, minimizing possible noise sources for the ultimate in high-fidelity reproduction. |
Mono | Use this mode when watching an old movie with a mono soundtrack. |
Tone Control: The Onkyo TX-8050 offers independent Bass (+/-10dB @ 50Hz) & Treble (+/-10 @ 20kHz) control to fine-tune your music.
IntelliVolume: The IntelliVolume setup function allows you set a volume correction value for each source, to prevent large jumps in volume when switching from one source to another. This feature eliminates the inconvenience of manually readjusting the volume control each time you switch from a source with a weak signal to a source with a strong signal and vice versa.
A & B Speaker Terminals: The Onkyo TX-8050 stereo receiver is equipped with A & B speaker terminals to connect up to two pair of speakers. The receiver uses binding post connectors for the A & B speaker outputs. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs; they will accept bare wire, pin connectors, single banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.
Impedance Switch: If you're using only one of the speaker sets (A or B), choose the 4Ω setting if each speaker's impedance is 4Ω to less than 6Ω, or choose the 6Ω setting if each speaker's impedance is 6Ω or more. If you're using both of the speaker sets (A & B), choose the 4Ω setting if each speaker's impedance is 8 to 16Ω.
Analog Audio Inputs/Outputs: The TX-8050 is equipped with 7 analog audio inputs (3 audio only/4 AV in). There is also two analog audio outputs (1 audio only/1 AV out).
Phono Input: Included in the 7 analog audio inputs, is a Phono (MM) input with ground terminal.
Digital Inputs: The Onkyo network stereo receiver features 4 digital audio inputs. There are 2 optical (toslink) digital inputs and 2 coaxial (RCA) digital inputs. The receiver's digital inputs do not support multichannel audio signal; PCM signal only.
Preamp Outputs: The Onkyo TX-8050 network stereo receiver employs a mono-subwoofer preamp output, a stereo preamp output, and a Zone2 preamp output.
- Subwoofer Pre-Out: The Onkyo TX-8050 network stereo receiver is equipped with a mono subwoofer preamp output to connect a powered subwoofer.
- Stereo Pre-Out: If you want to use a separate power amplifier and use the receiver as a preamp, simply connect the receiver's stereo preamp-output to your amp's input, and connect all speakers to the power amplifier.
- Zone2: Zone 2 pre-outs on the TX-8050 allow you to send a stereo audio signal to a second room equipped with an amplifier and a pair of speakers. You can either enjoy the same source in both rooms, or play a different source in Zone 2. You can choose from analog, USB, or Network sources. Digital inputs (both optical/coaxial) cannot be output to Zone 2. You are able to adjust the volume from either the Onkyo stereo receiver or from your Zone 2 integrated amplifier.
Note: You must currently be listening to a USB device or Network audio source in the Main Zone to initially select USB or Network as a source in Zone 2 or Zone 3. Then you can switch the Main Zone to any source you desire. You cannot select different AM/FM radio stations or listen to USB and Network content in separate Zones at the same time.
Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, the A & B main speakers are automatically muted (the Powered Zone 2 speakers are not muted). When you connect an iPod or iPhone to the USB port on this receiver, no sound will be output from the headphone jack.
Video Section
Composite Video: Although not a surround sound receiver, the TX-8050 does employ composite video inputs & outputs; so it can be used in a basic A/V system.
- 4 Composite Video Inputs: There are 4 composite video inputs to connect your audio/video devices to the receiver.
- Composite Video Record Output: There is a single composite video record output for recording purposes.
- Composite Video Monitor Output: There is a single composite video monitor output to connect to your television.
Note: The TX-8050 does not contain any S-video, component video, or HDMI inputs/outputs.
Network & Tuner Functions

Optional Wi-Fi Adapter: The TX-8050 is compatible with the UWF-1 Wireless LAN adapter, allowing you to connect to a wireless network. The UWF-1 operates on the 2.4 GHz wireless transmission frequency, and supports IEEE 802.11 b/g/n. The adapter features a Type A USB plug and connects to the USB port on the front of the receiver.

The unit works very well, wireless reception excellent, with a few delays in reception here and there. It has plenty of power to drive our large custom made speakers, and the sound quality is what we hoped for. The other functions, such as CD playing, FM radio and TV sound also work well.
