About the Onkyo TX-8160

Deia Z.

A new take on an old classic

Today's feature-packed home theater receivers are awesome, but if you're a serious music listener, a two-channel stereo receiver with connections for all your components may be your most sensible choice. The Onkyo TX-8160 combines a classic stereo receiver design with cutting-edge features for enjoying both digital and analog music sources. Onkyo's low-distortion Wide Range Amplification Technology gives you authentic, dynamic sound, while the receiver's 32-bit/384 kHz DAC helps bring out the best in any digital audio format, from high-resolution audio files to streamed music.

All the right connections

With seven analog inputs and four digital inputs, the TX-8160 has ample connections for your audio gear, from CD players to cassette decks. A dedicated phono input gives you a direct connection for a turntable, and there's even a set of analog stereo line outputs for audio dubbing. A front-panel USB port gives you convenient access to digital music files stored on a thumb drive, but all of the above is only about half of the equation — the TX-8160 has some very compelling wireless listening features as well.

Wireless capability expands your listening options

When it comes to music, we understand there's no such thing as too many choices. The TX-8160's networking capability lets you play songs from your personal digital music library, but why stop there? Support for the most popular streaming services like Pandora®, Spotify®, and SiriusXM Internet radio opens up an abundance of new listening options. You can listen to Internet radio stations anywhere in the world via TuneIn radio. Apple AirPlay lets you stream music from a compatible Apple device, while Bluetooth lets you stream from nearly any phone, tablet, or computer. The receiver remembers up to eight Bluetooth-enabled devices, making it easy for family and friends to share their music too.

Music in different rooms

Playback from such a capable music receiver shouldn't be confined to just one room, so the TX-8160 gives you the ability to spread your music through different parts of the house. A/B speaker connections mean you can add a second pair of speakers in another room or outdoor area. You can play the same source in both places simultaneously, or use the A/B switch to select the area you want to listen in. Zone 2 preamp outputs also send audio to a different room with a power amp and speakers. (You can play the same source in both zones, or a different source in Zone 2.) A dedicated DAC for Zone 2 lets you enjoy digital sources and even streamed music outside of your main listening area.

A convenient control app ties it all together

Onkyo's free Remote app for iOS and Android™ lets you control your music with your phone or tablet from any room in the house. The app lets you switch sources and control volume, along with adjusting bass and treble settings. It also shows you a list of supported streaming services to choose from, giving you full control over them from within the app.

High-Current Discrete Amplifier: The Onkyo TX-8160 stereo receiver features a high-current discrete amplifier design with massive EI transformer. The stereo amplifier is rated at 80W x 2ch (8Ω, 20-20kHz, 0.08% THD). The stereo receiver's amplifier employs WRAT, H.C.P.S, Non-Phase-Shift, Closed Ground-Loop Circuits, and Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry or dynamic, detailed, clear sound.

  • WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks.
  • H.C.P.S. (High Current Power Supply): Under the anti-resonant cover of any Onkyo receiver, you'll instantly notice the High Current Power Supply (H.C.P.S.) transformer. With its huge, isolated power supply design and high-capacity filter capacitors, it delivers the large amounts of power necessary for reproducing the wide dynamics of movie soundtracks and the detail and clarity of your music.
  • Non-Phase-Shift Amp Design: The receiver employs a Non-Phase-Shift amp design which prevents phase shift by pushing the roll-off point higher than the listening-level frequency. This creates a well-focuses and realistic audio image.
  • Closed Ground-Loop Circuits: The TX-8160 employs a sophisticated closed-circuit design in which each circuit has a separate link to the power supply. This helps to cancel individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion.
  • Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry: Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry adjusts the gain so that less than half the amount of attenuation is needed, ensuring the signal never comes close to the noise floor. This protects the signal against noise, resulting in a dramatically clearer sound.

384kHz/32-bit Hi-Grade DAC: An Asahi Kasei AK4452 digital-to-analog converter (384kHz/32-bit) unlocks the full potential of any audio format with its unique low-distortion sound-enhancing filtering technologies.

Tone Control + Direct Mode: The Onkyo TX-8160 offers independent Bass (+/-10dB @ 50Hz) & Treble (+/-10 @ 20kHz) control to fine-tune your music. You can use the Direct feature that outputs pure sound as it was intended by bypassing the tone control circuits during playback.

Digital Inputs: The Onkyo stereo receiver features four digital audio inputs. There are two optical (toslink) digital inputs and two coaxial (RCA) digital inputs. The receiver's digital inputs support 2ch PCM audio signals only. Supported sampling rates include 32kHz, 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, and 96kHz; with a bit-depth of 16-bit, 20-bit, or 24-bit.

Analog Inputs/Output + Phono (MM): There are seven stereo RCA inputs, including a Phono (MM) input with ground terminal. There is also a stereo RCA line output for connection of an audio recorder.

A & B Speaker Terminals: The Onkyo TX-8160 stereo receiver is equipped with A & B speaker terminals to connect up to two pair of speakers. The receiver uses binding post connectors for the A & B speaker outputs. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs; they will accept bare wire, pin connectors, single banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.

Impedance Switch: If you're using only one of the speaker sets (A or B), choose the 4Ω setting if each speaker's impedance is 4Ω to less than 6Ω, or choose the 6Ω setting if each speaker's impedance is 6Ω or more. If you're using both of the speaker sets (A & B), choose the 4Ω setting if each speaker's impedance is 8 to 16Ω.

Subwoofer Pre-Out: The Onkyo TX-8160 stereo receiver is equipped with a mono subwoofer preamp output to connect a powered subwoofer.

Headphone Jack: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front-panel, the A & B main speakers are automatically muted (the Powered Zone 2 speakers are not muted).

Zone 2: Zone 2 pre-outs on the TX-8160 allow you to send a stereo audio signal to a second room equipped with an amplifier and a pair of speakers. You can either enjoy the same source in both rooms, or play a different source in Zone 2. You can choose from analog, optical/coaxial digital inputs (PCM only), USB, Bluetooth, AirPlay, or Network sources. You are able to adjust the volume from either the Onkyo stereo receiver or from your Zone 2 integrated amplifier.

  • Notes:
    • With Network and Bluetooth sources, you cannot select different inputs for the main room and separate room.
For example, if a Network source has been selected in the main room and then Bluetooth is selected as playback
source in the separate room, the input in the main room will change to Bluetooth accordingly. Furthermore, you cannot select separate network services (including AirPlay) for the main room and Zone 2.
    • When listening to AM/FM radio broadcasting, you cannot select different stations for the main room and separate room. Therefore broadcasting of the same station will be heard in the both rooms.
    • DSD not supported in Zone 2.

Volume Setup: The Onkyo stereo receiver provides the following volume settings.

  • IntelliVolume: With IntelliVolume, you can set the input level for each input (+/-12dB) selector individually. This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others. This function does not work in Zone 2.
  • Maximum Volume: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from 30-79 (max), or Off (disabled).
  • Power On Volume: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Last (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Min (0), or 1-79.

Q
Can you adjust the volume independently on each speaker zone? ( A vs B ) A louder, B softer .. etc
ryerye  Jun 07, 2017
1 answer
A
A vs B Speakers get the same volume out of the receiver (so no); however, we have volume adjusters in between the speakers and the receiver for the other room so we are able to (but that requires other parts not included). This receiver also has a 2nd Zone (different than A vs B). The 2nd zone would connect to another receiver or amplifier which you could adjust separately.

Can this receiver drive a set of 4 Ohm indoor speakers and a set of 8 Ohm outdoor speakers at the same time?
ray  Apr 06, 2017
2 answers
A
I'm sorry. I have used this receiver a very limited amount in my bedroom. I do not know, but I'm assuming it would work with 2 speakers outs. Obviously the 4 ohm set would sound louder with less resistance. You might want it the other way around. 4 ohm outside...
kirk  Apr 07, 2017
A
Not to my knowledge. I think it's just one or the other. The manual should be available on Crutchield's or Onkyo's website.
michael  Apr 07, 2017
Q
can you connect wireless speakers to this unit?
michael  Mar 27, 2017
1 answer
A
You can, but I wouldn't recommend it. This receiver has excellent clarity, and you would lose much of that by using wireless speakers. It's best to use quality, high-end speakers with a good receiver. If you're going to use wireless, you could probably go with a much cheaper receiver instead.

Q
does random play work on the USB port?
ray  Dec 26, 2016
1 answer
A
To answer your question I tested USB functionality using a thumb drive containing MP3 files. Random play does work as expected. Additionally, "Repeat all tracks", "Repeat one track", "Repeat tracks in the folder" work with the USB media. In the past I have use an external hard drive via USB with no problems. I did not test this functionality with an external hard drive but I would expect the same behavior as I am seeing with the thumb drive (flash drive, SD card with adapter, etc). I am very satisfied with my purchase of the TX-8160.
michael  Dec 27, 2016
Q
1) Is there a low-pass filter on the Onkyo TX-8160s subwoofer pre-out? If so: 1a) What is its cutoff frequency (or adjustable frequency range)? 1b) Would there also be a high-pass filter on the signal to the main speakers? 2) Is the subwoofer pre-out volume (or gain) adjustable (to compensate for very efficient main speakers)?
brandon  Dec 04, 2016
1 answer
A
There is nothing in the specs about lowpass filters or high pass filters. The sub out is line level and any adjustments you need to make would have to be done on the subwoofer. Frequency and volume levels are usually available on powered subwoofers. The availability of old school treble and bass controls on the unit is one of the reasons I bought it. I like knobs!

Q
Would my computer need to be running, or can the TX-8160 stream Wi-Fi radio straight from a wireless router?
brandon  Dec 03, 2016

Yes, the TX-8160 can stream wi-fi straight from your wireless router and your computer does not need to be running.
clarence  Dec 07, 2016
A
It connects straight to the radio i.e. pandora or Spotify. A computer is not necessary.

I've been able to use my wireless router....not real good reception, if that is what you would call it. Breaks up quite often.
charles n  Dec 06, 2016
A
I use it from a variety of audio sources including iphones and computers. It seems it can connect to any wireless audio source, although I haven't officially tested a wireless router as the audio source.

A
Sry, just using this for my upstairs bedroom. I cannot answer this.

Q
Is FM reception good on the Onkyo TX-8160 when tuning into a radio station? There are a couple of FM stations I really enjoy that I can only receive on my car and truck radio. Unfortunately, these 2 FM stations I enjoy listening to do not have internet streaming for online listening... Would be great if I could pick them up inside the house.... Thanks
jeffrey  Oct 24, 2016
2 answers
A
I also listen to standard broadcast FM radio. The reception seems great, but keep in mind this unit does support an external antenna so you could add one and boost the reception. You should not experience any issues with AM/FM reception and if you do it could be easily remedied with an external antenna.
william  Oct 28, 2016
A
It works well for me with weak stations but I have a coax antenna connected. It's basically the same as the T shaped wire antennas that come with receivers. My house sits in a slight valley so some FM stations didn't get good reception with my older Yamaha receiver. This one pulls them in great.
jeffrey  Oct 25, 2016
Q
I just purchased the TX-8160. I am using Air Play successfully, but I have to select the music from iTunes on the computer. The selected album or playlist shows up on the app, but when that album or list is finished it goes blank. I cannot access my iTunes music files on the app...only the one playing at the moment. Is there a way to access all my iTunes music with the app or the remote, rather than going back to the computer and manually selecting from iTunes?

I am looking to connect my turntable and TV to this receiver. I have a pair of Pioneer Pioneer SP-BS21-LR Bookshelf with a nominal imedence of 6ohms - would this receiver suffice? Please advise.

A
This would most likely work for you, but I would suggest looking at a surround sound system if you are hooking up a TV. Remember that many modern Smart TVs also have applications like Pandora. So you really need to be more specific about your intentions and desires before this question can be answered properly.

When playing music from zone 2 is it possible to turn off zone 1 so that music is only playing through zone 2?

Yes, I was able to do this using the Onkyo Remote3 App for the iPhone though most of the display functionality on both the receiver and the App is disabled. Another option would be to have Zone 1 on but the volume all the way down.

Does the DAC feature on this product work if you are playing music through your phone using Bluetooth or does the DAC only work if the phone is plugged into the product through its headphone jack?
christopher j  Jul 01, 2016
2 answers
A
It is play through Bluetooth.
larry  Jul 10, 2016
A
If you use the phone jack it is analog so the DAC does not come into play. The Bluetooth would be digital,so the DAC would be involved, but the resolution would depend upon the source,i.e.-MP3/cd. Try it both ways and see what sounds best.

Can two TX-8160 receivers operate on the same network? I have outdoor speaker in the front and back of the house. Due to structural design, need one receiver to power front and one receiver to power back. Will the IPhone App be able to identify and operate both receivers without hiccups?

I was unable to verify the Onkyo Remote App's capability to identify and differentiate between two TX-8160 receivers on the same network. You can either use a different model network receiver (and app) for the second pair of speakers, or, you can contact Onkyo directly to see if they can confirm this capability in their control app: 800-229-1687 I hope that helps. Which floor standing speakers would be a good match for the Onkyo 8160? I am considering the Polk TSx550T.
mike  May 25, 2016

The Onkyo is 4 Ohm stable so it will work with just about any tower speakers we offer. The Polks are on a great sale price and one of the best values in their current range: http://www.crutchfield.com/shopsearch/TSx550T.html They are definitely a good match for the Onkyo receiver. I think it's a great product, overall. Photo preamp is powerful enough! and vinyl plays beautifully. The Onkyo -3 app leave a bit to be desired, but it works perfectly with Airplay, over Bluetooth, and other wireless, streaming services with no problems. It powers two sets of hard-wired outdoor speakers on two levels of our townhouse with ease. Very powerful and warm sounding. I hope this helps!

I play music from my phone through the blue-tooth connection have not tried to do it by usb. mostly because you want the phone to act as remote at same time.

I just tried to do that and didn't have any luck. If your phone has bluetooth - that works fine with the receiver. Download the Onkyo app. I didn't try too many settings with the phone when connected with the USB. I used the phone's play music app and the receiver did not recognize it as being connected.

Q
with the pre-outs, if the receiver power is insufficient for a high-load (4 ohm) set of speakers, can the 'zone 2' be used with an external amp as a 'pre-amp tuner' ?
john  Mar 03, 2016
1 answer
A
Yes... I am using the Zone 2 output to feed a 30 watt amp in bedroom and contoling the 8160 with iPad app. The Zone 2 output appears to be standard, line-level via RCA female connectors. Also note there is a separate set of Line Out outputs that I feed into a low power FM transmitter. Music and news for the whole house!

Q
Can this unit be used outside in a covered patio? of course It will not be exposed to elements directly but will be outside
arefeen  Feb 24, 2016
3 answers
A
I checked the manual for any reference regarding outside environment conditions. However I know that weather conditions with high humidity will have a negative effect on electronic connectors, and components I would personally recommend not using this electronic device outside. Note a Marine radio is for outside use and is especially designed and manufactured for that environment.
case  Feb 26, 2016
A
This unit is not designed for either damp conditions or extreme temperatures (hot or cold). So it is not really suited to recurring use outside, even on a covered patio. Maybe once, on a pleasant day, for a special occasion -- but not routinely. (By the way, it is an exceptional receiver for normal indoor system use.)
patrick  Feb 25, 2016
A
Depending on where you live, I would say no. Outdoors there are temperature extremes and humidity that could affect the electronics. This unit has computer parts,Bluetooth, wifi etc.that would be damaged. Keep it indoors and route the speaker outputs to outdoor speakers(designed to deal with weather extremes) and it will be fine

I ended up returning it because it was a nightmare trying to setup wifi and integrate with iTunes. It's good product if you have 1990's to early 2000's technology..

A
For a definitive answer, you will have to download the manual from onkyousa [dot] com. I can't give you the exact URL because Crutchfield's site does not allow one to include links to other sites. I suspect the TX-8160 is similar to my Yamaha RN500. WAV/PCM and FLAC up to 192KHz; WMA, .mp3, .mp4 up to 48KHz.

If I am using the usb stick to play songs. Is it possible to choose what songs I can play?
nelson  Feb 13, 2016

yes, you just to scroll through your play list and pick the song you want to play
paul  Feb 13, 2016
A
You can choose which song but the navigation must be done with the remote control and it appears that I cannot select a different album to play without unplugging the usb and starting the play process again. For me this is not ready for prime time, usb wise. The unit works great wifi connected to a computer.

How good is the headphone output? Is it audiophile quality?
new user  Dec 21, 2015
2 answers
A
Sorry for the delayed response. I haven't tried it myself as I need to procure the headphone jack to fit my Bose headphone. I have purchased the Onkyo TX-8160 stereo received to drive my Focal Chorus 714 stereo speakers. The combination really outmatched my expectation and It was really wonderful to listen to any kind of music. Mainly hearing it on the nice wooden Focal speakers, gives a new natural experience of listening to live orchestra. The Onkyo gives u the flexibility to listen to direct ON mode, which bypasses the post processing of audio (Bass and Treble) and even that also is very nice. It should be good when listening to music from vinyl records. If you are buying it to feed your stereo speakers, then purchase good quality cables (audioquest). Overall I could able to buy everything at Crutchfield at a very good price and it was delivered nicely.

I'm sorry that I don't know the answer. Obviously you can do it all from an outside source to the receiver, but I'm going to say no... you can't but have not read the manual from cover to cover. Sorry.
kirk  Dec 18, 2015
A
No you can't. This device acts as a receiver not a source. You'll need to hook up wired speakers to it using standard speaker cable.
nicholas  Dec 18, 2015
A
I don't think so. It uses Bluetooth as an input, not an output. You might be able to purchase an adapter for that, though.
daniel  Dec 18, 2015

I own this receiver and asked Crutchfield the same question. Here is the answer I received. Unfortunately no stereo I'm aware of can output over Bluetooth to a Bluetooth speaker. You could do it using a Bluetooth transmitter like this Sony HWS-BTA2W. Connect that to the pre-amp zone 2 output on that receiver and it will send your music to whatever Bluetooth speaker you choose to pair with it.

Q
What kind of range do you get by using the App. Can you control from outside to inside the house for example?
mark  Dec 01, 2015
7 answers
A
Are you talking about bluetooth? Apple has widely disseminated info saying the max range of bluetooth is 33 feet. If you need greater range, you should use AirPlay so music flows over your wireless network. Wireless does have better range, and sometimes can be used outside your house unless you have insulation that functions like a Faraday cage. Regarding the TX-8160: I bought one and returned it. I had a lot of trouble with the bluetooth; Onkyo's bluetooth implementation is much buggier than the Bose Mini Soundlink implementation. I think the '8160 was rushed to market before proper testing; I also think its construction is somewhat cheap.
edward r.  Dec 08, 2015
A
Because the App works with your Wi-Fi, it is your router's range that that is most important. Once the receiver is networked with your router, streaming music is a breeze. I use Air Play because I have all Mac devises and my range is only limited by the location of the router. They do make range extenders for routers but I have no experience with them. Distance would be more limited if you were using blue tooth wire-less. Hope this helps.

Mark, I am unable to answer your question, for I sent my purchase of this receiver back because it just did not sound as good as I am use to from my old 1976 Sansui, sound quality is important to me and not so much all the bells and whistles these new receivers have. Sorry good luck
charles a  Dec 02, 2015
A
all depends on the range of your network/wifi - I have no issues controlling the receiver from my phone - via app, outside on deck, or in other parts of house.

Yes as long as you are able to be on the same wifi network.

jon  Dec 02, 2015

The receiver is quite responsive via the app most days ... On occasion it hits a bit of interferience (major metro area) and our wireless network is split through three levels (two routers) do its optimal as can be. The receiver is on the lowest level. Overall, it's fantastic and drives two discreet sets of stereo speakers ...

(1) I did not use the USB jack on the TX-8160. A stereo RCA jacks to 3.5mm stereo plug would undoubtedly work for this. (2) Yes, you can stream anything you can hear on your mobile device, to the 8160 via Bluetooth. However, I was less than impressed with the 8160 bluetooth implementation; I ended up sending the 8160 back and getting a higher-quality receiver.
