I miss this receiver, wish it was still made

Written by: paul from san francisco on September 10, 2013

I got this to use with my Technics SL-1200M3D turntable. The quality and sound were great... this receiver pumped out clear highs, punchy pass, and had some decent separation between frequencies for only having treble and bass EQ controls. Unfortunately, I burnt out the power supply on this receiver after seriously heavy party use, and bought the TX-8255 to replace it, only to find that the 8255 sounded much worse, with muddy, narrow sound!

Pros: simple, clear signal, great sound, price

Cons: none

Nice receiver for the price.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice receiver, but needs a mid pot in addition to bass and treble. If it had that, I would rate it a 5. Either that or Onkyo should sell a nice graphic EQ to go with it.

I'm very happy.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As a first venture into buying stereo equipment in over thirty years I didn't really know what to get or what I needed and was limited in funds I was willing to spend. I had a couple of old speakers I bought thrifting that work great and I needed a receiver and CD player . I went shopping locally but saw nothing in the big box stores but giant boombox types or shelf systems that seemed monstrous. I knew I would want to add to the system over time so I wanted the start of something. I went to a local store, who had nothing in my price range, but luckily the salesman there had once worked at Crutchfield's. He was great and recommended the Onkyo as a good receiver for me. I took his advice and am very glad I did. I went online to Crutchfield's and found the receiver right away. It came and I had no trouble hooking up the speakers and CD player I also bought. With the old speakers, it fills the house and sounds great. I can even get radio reception, which is almost unheard of where I am. It was a great way for me to start listening to music again and getting my second wind for life.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Onkyo TX 8222 receiver to replace a 25 year old Onkyo
receiver. I have the receiver hooked up to a pair of Cambridge
Soundworks Newton Series bookshelf speakers. The sound is incredible!
This is a great product for a very reasonable price. I highly recommend it.

Ipod Intergration Deceiving

The ipod intergration for this unit is Ipod out to RCA jack in. You must use
the ipod for making changes, the face of the receiver does not display any
ipod information. Other than that is is OK.

Nice stereo receiver

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great stereo receiver. I am using it my den and it was easy to set up. It is easy to use. The sound is very good. It is used as a CD and radio system primarily but I did hook up my turntable too. I am using a pair of older Kenwood speakers (KLX-999s) and the receiver has plenty of power for these. I believe this a good value as it seems to be a very solid product.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this several months ago for my son's 16th birthday. I'm so impressed with this, I think I'm going to get another to use on the deck. It sounds very clear and crisp, and receives even the most distant FM stations with ease. Nice solid construction. Great Buy!!

Onkyo TX-8222B

This reciever is so nice - I bought two. I would rate it about 100% on every scale.

You can't go wrong with this item and Crutchfield will take care of you. Get you a subwoofer (Polk) and 2 or 4 pair of Polks and it sounds so good.

They must have mismarked the price on the recever - it sounds like a $2000 piece.

That's my review of this item - 100%! And - Crutchfield is so nice to deal with.

Thanks -

Old reliable: Onkyo

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well, I got delivery of my new TX8222 10 days ago and
no surprise to me that this is a really fine product.
This is my fourth Onkyo receiver and actually cost a bit less from Crutchfield than I had paid years ago for
my first three (one of which I still have as a backup). I'll try to be brief: Great, pure sound. Plenty of inputs, including phono (which I don't need).
A terrific fm antenna with a coaxial connection attached to a simple skinny little white wire. Big point for me: I have one fM station I listen to WBGO fm jazz, which has usually been giving me marginal reception, except for my model one Tivoli mono radio (also bought from Crutchfield). I now gave my Model one radio (which I love) to my wife BECAUSE the new Onkyo receiver gets perfect reception of my station with the supplied white antenna wire (seventh heaven, for me). The older Onkyos couldn't capture this station.
The remote is beautifully designed with all the inputs
nicely arranged on their neat little off-white colored panel, a nice color coded feature. The sleep feature is really neat. If I'm falling off to sleep I simply set it
for 30 minutes or so at which time it automatically turns off the receiver. I can attach two sets of speakers but I don't need to because I love my wonderful
7" x 10" infinity Primus 150 speakers (also bought from Crutchfield several years ago). If you want a really exceptional stereo receiver at a give-away price, this is for you.

Great Buy!

Bought this to replace my old technics receiver. First i bought a Sony STR DE197 for 160 bucks..OUCH it was so bad i sent it back that day and bought the ONKYO. MAN was I happy. The ONKYO was only a few bucks more but the quality is unreal! Sounds SOOO good, great features, great remote and just has that look of elegance you want in your setup!
This is by far the best 2 channel receiver available in this price range.

First Onkyo product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Onkyo TX-8222 Stereo Receiver to replace my Pioneer receiver, which was several years old. I called Crutchfield's sales staff to get additional feedback the TX-8222. As usual, their sales staff had the answers for all my questions. My order was quickly processed, sent the following day, and received within three days. Excellent service. The Onkyo TX-8222 is a solid performer. With my disability, I found the control buttons have a light turning resistance, and good arrangement. One nice feature is the ability to add text to the display, instead of station numbers. You can also play/arrange your music by type/group. All rear connections are well explained in the manual. My speakers are good quality bookshelf JVC, and the sound match is excellent with the TX-8222. This receiver has better quality than many others in the same price range. The remote control has options for HDTV and other components. Overall, the TX-8222 is first class, and I highly reccomend it to anyone looking for a stero receiver without surround sound.

Input and Output Notes

WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks.

iPod Compatible: The DS-A1 or DS-A2 Remote Interactive Dock for iPod (item #'s 580DSA1 and 580DSA2) provide an interface between an iPod digital media player and Onkyo TX-8222. Once the iPod is docked you can control basic functions such as volume control, play, stop, and skip via the Onkyo system's RI-compatible wireless remote control. The dock also charges the battery in the iPod, and allows you to view digital photos and video on an Onkyo system.

Sleep Function: From the remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after as much as 90 minutes or as little as 10 minutes; choices are presented in 10-minute increments.

Display Dimmer: The display can be adjusted to one of three brightness levels.

Remote Control

Remote Control: The remote controls this unit and compatible Onkyo cassette players and CD players.

Input and Output Notes

Headphone Output: This receiver has a standard 1/4" headphone output on the front panel.

Speaker Outputs: There are binding post connectors for the A and B speaker outputs. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs.

IR Input/Output: A commercially available IR receiver can be connected to the IR In jack, allowing you to control the receiver while you're in another room, or when the receiver is out of sight. An optional IR emitter can be connected to the IR Out jack to pass IR commands to other components.

RI Remote Control Jack: The 1/8" RI remote control jack allows you to connect this receiver to compatible Onkyo components.
