Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For someone wanting to just replace an existing 2 speaker stereo tuner/receiver; this unit works well. No hiss, no background noise, just music coming from the speakers. That's all I wanted and this unit is great for 2 channel audio. I also liked the sound level pre-set when powered on, if I had been listening at a high volume level, when I next turn it on I don't get blown out of the room. I'm more than satisfied with this open-box receiver and Crutchfield packing and shipping was first rate.

Pros: Works as advertised. Easy setup.

Cons: No midrange control knob (my prior 2 receivers had bass, midrange and treble controls). No mute button on the receiver (there is a mute button on the remote). Otherwise a 5 star receiver.

Great Product

Onkyo, is a great product, I have a 50 watt amp that i brought back in 1978, and it still kicking strong. I purchased the tx8555 because of the features it has like the zone 2, and the 100 watts which is asume. I am a true ide hard fan of this product. Now i have my amp hooked up to this receiver (tx8555) in one room, and the tx 855 is in another.

Great so Far

Written By Imhotep, Chicago on Wednesday, September 21, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The TX-8555 replaced an older Onkyo receiver with some problems--the B speakers no longer worked on the front porch and I was getting an annoying hum from my JBL 4410s in the living room. So, in addition to getting more watts per channel I solved my noise and speaker problems, too! The phono in was important to me, as well.

I am only giving the receiver 4 stars because I have only been using it for a couple of weeks--but I like what I've heard and seen, so far.

This is a solid product at a great price. I did not need or want a home theater receiver but a good ole stereo receiver. This unit delivers! A/B speakers and 2 Zone capability. I hooked up my Sirius radio and CD player as well. If needed, I could also add tape, DVD, phone, game unit, etc...100 Watts, sounds great, even with less than great speakers.

Best Bang for the Buck

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far I am very pleased with the performance and sound of the unit. This is the best my Klipsh Forte' 2's have sounded in years. I originally was using Carver separates but when the amp died for the 2nd time I decided to go with a nice Yamaha Home Theatre reciever. It sounded great in that application but was really lacking driving the Klipsh in stereo mode. After deciding to go back with a stereo setup again and use the Yamaha with some bookshelf speakers; I talked to some friends with Onkyo gear and decided on this unit over the Marantz. My speakers are back to sounding as good as they did with my old Carver 225 watt per channel amp ...maybe better. Very smooth and neutral sound with no more tiring fatigue and brightness of the Yamaha. Definately no regrets whatsoever.

I bought it as an open box, for a huge discount. Couldn't beat the price & the quality. 100 watts isn't really enough for me, but wasn't in the mood to spend more. It will do for now. I bought a 500 watt Sony surround receiver from Best Buy for dirt. The bells & whistles croaked in that within 3 yrs. Didn't need the Sony to be surround but couldn't beat the price. I have (2) other Onkyo Receivers & a surround that have given me trouble free operation since the mid 90's. A good product. I play music to the (ear splatting loading hammer) ! I recommend it! Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This review is based on the second one I received, as the first one was dead on arrival. I was hesitant about getting a second one and almost chose a Yamaha instead. This one powered up and works superbly so far. Two channel stereo is all that interest me, and this receiver has most of features that I want without being loaded down with clutter and useless features that I couldn't care less for. I don't care for the layout of, or the speaker wire connections, but they work fine. The unit while missing a loudness/bass boost feature for low volume bass enhancement produces excellent overall sound without one. I like the intelligent volume control settings. This feature allows you to adjust the pre amps gain for each individual source. It's my favorite feature of this unit so far. I have it driving a pair in Infinity 362's in a rather large room. I've added the Infinity PS 28 sub for a little low end enhancement, but the sound is surprisingly quite adequate without the powered sub. The remote leaves a little to be desired, but I bought this receiver for musical enjoyment, not the fancy remote. I'm still getting to know this receiver, and time will tell the rest. So far though, for the money spent, I'm pleased. I came here looking for, and expecting to purchase a Yamaha, but price still sells, and this one was on sale. This unit out performs the Sony unit it replaces by a wide margin, and was far fewer dollars than a comparably spec'ed Yamaha.

Great receiver, except for satellite radio

Written By Dan In WV, Charleston, WV on Saturday, March 26, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love the receiver, with the exception of the whole "satellite radio ready" deal.
The receiver wouldn't recognize my Sirius receiver, and when I called Onkyo
support, the tech kept insisting that the receiver was not satellite radio
compatible. He kept asking me how I had the Sirius receiver connected to the
reciever, and I kept saying "to the port on the back that says "Sirius'," and he
kept telling me the rig wasn't Siruius compatible. One of the more ridiculous
conversations I've ever had in my life. The Cruthfield tech was better - he at
least knew the unit was SUPPOSED to play satellite radio, but he didn't solve
my problem - he just blamed Sirius for the issue. Other than the Sirius
problem, I'm very satisfied with the unit, and I've been able to get Sirius to play
through it, just not like it's supposed to - the TX-8555's display still says "Check
SR Receiver" - but it plays. If you don't care about satellite compatability, add a
star to my review; if a primary use of this product is to play Sirius radio, deduct
four and stay away.

Written By Ryan, Toms River, NJ on Wednesday, March 02, 2011

This is the second Onkyo receiver I've purchased from Crutchfield. I continue to be
impressed by their affordability and performance. The other receiver I purchased is a
more higher end unit that is used in my home theatre. The TX-8555 was purchased to
be used in a 6,000 square foot automotive shop. Six satellite speakers are powered via
a Niles SS-4 speaker selector, also purchased through Crutchfield. This unit is
powerful enough to overcome the noise that a busy automotive shop creates, while still
being incredibly clear and lacking distortion. In fact, one of my co-workers made this
comment shortly after the unit was installed: "I've heard things in these songs that I've
never heard before." That's actually saying quite a bit about this unit, because the
satellite speakers that are being powered are far from extraordinary. Keep in mind
though, like anything else, you get what you pay for. And for the money I paid for the TX-
8555, I'm extremely satisfied.

I have been very pleased with the tuner sensitivity and very clean audio. Using rabit-ears
even weaker stations are received clearly. The amplifier section compares quite
favorably with my replaced separate Onkyo amplifier which used a separate tuner

The only limitations are bass and treble controls, but no mid-range adjustment, and
either 6 or 8 ohm output impedance. It would be nice to be able to match the older 4
ohm speakers more exactly.

Overall, I am quite happy with the unit and would recommend it.

I had a real good experience with Crutchfield. This was an open box receeiver, so
price was very tempting. I would have to say this model is one of the best i've ever heard.
Radio stations come in great. The sound is so clean and crisp. I've had onkyo products
in the past and they tend to run warm, but this model is one of the coolest running
models i've ever had. It does need a subwoofer to go along with to give that perfect
sound. For a two channel reciever, you can't go wrong with this model.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound is terrific, help from Crutchfield couldn't be better. My problem is with Onkyo. My old unit which was hospitalized for repair work at an independant repairman because Onkyo said it was to old to work on (apprx 15 yrs) could not be finished due to a heart attack by the repairman. Onyko has gone the route of everyone else in making "home theatre " almost exclusively. I do not want that type of unit but one for music exclusively. I have two turntables, a reel to reel, a dual deck cassette deck and a cd player. my old Onkyo had inputs for all of these plus it also had simul source built right into the unit, not needing a separate amp. I could run two sets of speakers in the main room and another set in a second room with volume controls for each of the three sets in addition to a time delay for concert hall effect. I know I could find most of these features on other units in addition to Onkyo but I would be paying major dollars for features I do not want and would never use.

Solid reciever

Written By Steve, somewhere, VA on Saturday, January 22, 2011

I purchased this receiver to put in my office and connect my desktop computer to. I just
enjoy listening to music the old school way with a 2 channel stereo receiver. I currently
have two 10 year old Sony floor speakers wired to this receiver and let me tell you that
this amp is way more powerful than those speakers can handle. Great solid power, FM
Tuner works great for me, and tuner pretty much plug and play. You can control pretty
much everything right from the remote control which is very convenient. Next step is to
upgrade to some new bookshelf speakers and add a powered subwoofer. I would highly
recommend this receiver to anyone, plus with the Onkyo name on it... you can't go wrong.
P.S - Crutchfield had this receiver on my doorstep within 24 hours standard shipping.
Also this receiver was double boxed with package peanuts. They take great care when
shipping items to you.

Better Than I Expected

Written By Maximus, Ogden Utah on Friday, January 21, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, This thing is AWESOME period. I expected ok sound, week power, and disappointment for not going with a more expensive unit (Yamaha, H K) but let me tell you I am not. I thought I was going to have to get an amp to drive my VS 150's and my VS 120's but nope this thing does just fine on it's own. I read a post that if you had these big speakers you would fry your receiver if it had a 100w a Chanel or less NOPE hasn't fried, this thing I think has more power than it is rated at or it was just put together right. Second, you have to know how to set and adjust the settings to get it tuned in right no biggie just read your owners manual and tinker with it, It has a pure direct setting and it works fine for certain kinds of music and also it depends if the cd your listening to is a old copy or a remastered copy, generally I have found that if it is an old cd not remastered you probably want the pure direct turned off and fine tune it by control knobs, New or remastered cd's sound awesome with pure direct on. And third there is a volume control for each device that is plugged in to it cd, tape, ipod ect, just adjust accordingly and read the book on how to do it, all so adjust the independence to match your speakers Read the book. Hope this helps.

This receiver does everything a receiver should do, except to receive FM radio

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a good unit. I'm more old school though when it comes to stereo and for a todays
receiver this might be the closest thing a guy can get to something basic and powerful.
The only thing I really dislike is I can run all my components through my equalizer. My
equalizer only has 2 RCA inputs and thats not enough for everything. My other receiver,
the Sansui G-7000 has a 4-channel selector which was just push button, the equalizer
was on or off no matter what you were listening to. this receiver is not that way. And its
not heavy enough.haha Overall for the money it's a great unit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver for its phono input, the positive reviews I found both at Crutchfield and elsewhere on line, and the free delivery factor from CF. I'm running the low-end Denon DP-29F turntable through it and out to Klipsch Heresy III speakers. The Onkyo delivers sound clean and powerful enough for my concert-ruined ears. The Heresies seem sufficiently driven, and as rudimentary as the Denon turntable is (see my review of this product), it translates quite well through what I think are the two stronger links in the chain. I've been waiting for more than a decade to bring back out my vinyl, and these three components, along with some 12-gauge wire and the right sized space, have created a most satisfying renaissance. I haven't run any other components through it yet or even listened to the radio, so sorry I can't comment now on that.

was sceptical with the basic treble and bass controls on the new one. To my surprise, I
was floored! My EQ is now in the same box with the old receiver. This receiver
produces a nice warm bass sound and perfect highs. Every increase of volume is
subtle and quiet, so it doesn't just go from real low to real loud! My 19 year old Infinity

replaced. I may update my dated Onkyo cd player to see what else I'm missing!

Great unit for the price

Written By Richard, Seattle, WA on Tuesday, December 15, 2009

This receiver does the job.

I'm not big into the surround scene, preferring 2-channel sound instead. This does the job
perfectly. It's easy to set up (I don't even bother with the custom functions) and sounds great
for the price. It also has all the inputs I need (most importantly a phono-in).

If you're looking for a no-frills set up with great sound, this is the way to go.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is one awesome unit for the price. I inherited a georgeous vintage wood Stromberg/Carlson music cabinet made in the early '50's along with lots of vinyl lp's and needed to upgrade the electronics with a receiver that had a phono input for a record player ( a MUST) as well as upgrades to include IPOD, Zunes, etc.. A sixty year span in technology. No need for any other amps if you want to use a phono. It is powering 2 Bose 901 speakers extremely well. If I max it out, the neighbors complain. It pumps more power than I can use. At first, I was a little hesitant in that I am not familiar with the brand, however now, I don't see how you can go wrong with this unit. I love the fact that there are real KNOBS to adjust Bass/Treble; Left/Right if you so desire. Basic and uncomplicated. A hands on delight. No need to spend big bucks to get great sound. The 8555 has to be the most under rated receiver going. Good FM reception in fringe area. Manual is easy to understand, however the remote is a little confusing. None the less, it's all good.

Great stereo

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a stereo to power my home stereo system. I didn't need anything fancy of with surround; I wanted it to run three sets of i-ceiling speakers as well as my outdoor speakers. This receiver is great!

Setup was a snap and I am controlling the unit with an IR repeater from areas of the house and it works great. The power is sufficient to run the speakers and the sound is great. One nice feature (especially when running several pairs of speakers) is the automatic resistance overload protection. If you have too many speakers with the wrong resistance, it can burn out a receiver. This unit protects against that by shutting off the speakers if the resistance gets out of whack. I run resistance matching volume controls so I shouldn't have any problems.

Great unit and the price is right!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my old Sony reciever with this one and found it is everything (and then some) I expected. Great quality for the price. I would highly recommend this reciever to anyone who does not want to pay a fortune for lots of power (when needed), while not sacrificing quality. This was my first purchase a Crutchfield, and Bill should be complimented for his great customer service and reputation.

Quality stereo sound

The highs are exquisitely warm and smooth. Base is solid, not thumpy. The controls are clean, simple, and elegant.

Great for music lovers. I hope Onkyo and Clutchfield keep this in the catalog for long time to come.

A lot of bang for your buck

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

You will not be disapppointed. I paired it with Infinity speakers and if you into LOUD then you are going to be knocked out. What I like about this is that if you pay attention to the ventillation specs it will not run hot. I had a Sony prior to this and that ran hot which eventually fried it. Also the connections to your CD, DVD and TV and MP3 player are a snap to do. My only problem was with the VCR since the back of the receiver didn't match the manual I got with it. But that's no biggie for me. The main thing is that the sound quality is clean no matter what the volume. I am very pleased.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The last 2-channel receiver I owned was a Yamaha R1000 back in the early 1990's. We bought this Onkyo to drive a pair of Bose 901 speakers as our primary music system in the house. The Onkyo does a great job of driving the 901's. The speaker response is flat and the receiver has plenty of power at all volume levels. We also purchased the Onkyo iPod Dock so there are thousands of songs ready to go at the touch of two buttons.

This one's a keeper!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have owned/audtioned Yamaha and Denon stereo receivers but decided to try this Onkyo. Rated at 100 watts it does make a difference for music listening. I have it paired with v5 speakers and it is a nice combination. Unless you need a feature that Yamaha or Denon has, this Onkyo is a great buy worth considering.

very pleased with this receiver

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

my old Sony receiver gave up the ghost after many years of good service - I
needed a basic receiver for CDs and listening to PBS - the Crutchfield rep was very
helpful in picking out the right receiver for my speakers and my listening habits - I
am very happy with the receiver and didn't realize how far gone my old receiver
had become. The sound is excellent at all levels of volume and all I can say is I
am very satisfied. There are options for expanding capabilities with this receiver as
well. Happy with the receiver and happy with Crutchfield customer service.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I chose this receiver over a less expensive alternative with similar amplifier specs because it offered an abundance of source inputs including a phono input. I am well pleased with the choice after living with it for 10 days. The features offer a high level of convenience and flexibility and I can find no fault with the performance. I am driving a pair of inefficient acoustic suspension speakers which it handles effortlessly and my 64 year old ears haven't heard anything I didn't like at any volume level up to ear-splitting on any source. In this location with a corrosive marine atmosphere, I appreciate the gold contacts on the input connectors, and I especially like the ability to set the input levels to match the input.

Minor carping: I wish the industry would standardize remotes to minimize the rabbit-like propagation of controls on my coffee table...the Onkyo remote won't talk to the Sony TV or the Pioneer DVD player and I miss, but can easily live without a loudness control and a separate source selector for the tape output that I enjoyed on my deceased integrated amp.

May be overkill

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This may have been a little more than we needed for the application, which was a small docotrs office. However, for the money it was worth it. And now we can add in XM or Surius radio if we want, not to mention iPods, or other peripherals.

Audio Features

WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks.

Speaker Outputs: There are binding post connectors for the A and B speaker outputs. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs; they will accept bare wire, pin connectors, single banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.

Headphone Output: This receiver has a standard 1/4" headphone output on the front panel. The A and B speaker outputs are not automatically muted when you plug in headphones; they must be turned off using the buttons above the headphone jack.

Zone 2: The TX-8555 has line level (stereo RCA) outputs for a second zone. The zone 2 source is independent of the main zone and the level can be fixed or variable.

Pure Audio: In this mode, the display and video circuitry are turned off and the tone controls are bypassed, minimizing possible noise sources for the ultimate in high-fidelity reproduction.

Direct: In this mode, audio from the input source is output directly, bypassing the tone controls.

IntelliVolume: The IntelliVolume setup function allows you set a volume correction value for each source, to prevent large jumps in volume when switching from one source to another. This feature eliminates the inconvenience of manually readjusting the volume control each time you switch from a source with a weak signal to a source with a strong signal and vice versa.

Volume Setup: The receiver volume can be configured in the following ways:

  • Maximum Volume: prevent the volume from being turned too high by setting a maximum levels; independently set maximum volumes in the main zone and zone 2
  • Power On Volume: specify the turned-on volume; choose any volume level or Last (the same level that was used when the receiver was turned off); independently set maximum volumes in the main zone and zone 2
  • Mute Level: choose the level when you press the mute button; total mute, -50 dB, -40 dB, -30 dB, -20 dB, or -10 dB

Sleep Function: From the remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after as much as 90 minutes or as little as 10 minutes; choices are presented in 10-minute increments.

Tuner Presets: Up to 40 radio presets can be programmed, AM or FM; each can be assigned a customized name, up to 8 alphanumeric characters.

Video Features

Video: Although not a surround sound receiver, the TX-8555 does have four composite video inputs and an output; so it can be used in a basic A/V system.

Display Dimmer: The display can be adjusted to one of three brightness levels.

Remote Control

Remote Control: The remote controls this unit and compatible Onkyo cassette players, CD players, DVD players, and iPods (via the optional iPod Dock).

IR Input/Output: A commercially available IR receiver can be connected to the IR In jack, allowing you to control the receiver while you're in another room, or when the receiver is out of sight. An optional IR emitter can be connected to the IR Out jack to pass IR commands to other components.

RI Remote Control Jack: The 1/8" RI remote control jack allows you to connect this receiver to compatible Onkyo components and control them with the included remote.

Optional Add-on Devices

iPod Compatible: The DS-A4 Remote Interactive Dock for iPod (580DSA4, sold separately) provides an interface between an iPod digital media player and Onkyo TX-8555. Once the iPod is docked you can control basic functions such as volume, play, stop, and skip via the Onkyo system's RI-compatible wireless remote control. The dock also charges the battery in the iPod.

Satellite Ready: The Onkyo TX-8555 features proprietary ports on the rear panel for XM and Sirius Satellite Radio connection. In addition to the following necessary optional satellite tuners (sold separately), you will need a subscription to XM and/or Sirius Satellite radio.

  • XM Satellite Radio Ready: The receiver can be connected to the optional XM Home Tuner and Antenna (220XHD2H1, sold separately), allowing you to receive XM Satellite Radio through the TX-8555. You can search XM radio stations by Channel, Category or Direct Tuning. You can also choose to display the following XM information on the receiver's display - Channel Name, Channel Number, Category Name, Artist Name or Song Title.
  • Sirius Satellite Radio Ready: The TX-8555 can also be connected to the optional SiriusConnect Home Tuner kit (607SCH1 or 220SCH2P, sold separately), which allows you to receive Sirius Satellite Radio through the receiver.
