Our take on the Onkyo TX-NR1009

by Marshall Chase
Onkyo

Receivers: Your ticket to sensational sound

Your receiver powers your speakers and lets you connect and select your entertainment sources. But a great receiver does a lot more — it ignites your emotions. From the passion of a favorite musical artist, to the crossfire of a super-charged movie soundtrack, to the intensity and immersion of a fast-paced video game, your receiver is the key to experiencing and enjoying it in full.

Bring Onkyo's TX-NR1009 receiver into your home and whole new worlds of entertainment will burst forth. Blu-ray movies, HDTV programs, and video games propel you to new places with clear, digital sound to match the pristine images on-screen. The muscle behind the 'NR1009 is nine channels of amplification, rated at 135 watts each. And its state-of-the-art audio and video processors team up to engulf you in the sights and sounds of your favorite sci-fi action flicks, crime dramas, or live music concerts. But then, that's just the 'NR1009 getting started.

Music from your iPod®, the Internet, and more
The front-panel USB input beckons to your iPod. This direct digital connection doesn't just charge your player's battery — it supercharges your music. The 'NR1009's built-in digital-to-analog converters combine with their advanced Music Optimizer to return the "flavors" of the music that may have been lost in compression. Connect the receiver to your home network via its Ethernet port and you can enjoy music stored on your PC through your full-fledged, high-performance audio system, instead of a pair of pint-sized computer speakers. Plus you can also enjoy thousands of Internet radio stations — or let PANDORA® Internet radio create a set of customized "stations" based on your own tastes. Or add Onkyo's HD Radio tuner to listen to the free digital over-the-air programming that many AM and FM stations now broadcast.

DTS Neo:X™ improves surround sound realism
The Onkyo 'NR1009 is the first receiver ever with DTS Neo:X technology. It lets you use the receiver's nine channels of power to hook up the traditional five speakers of a home theater setup, plus a pair of "front height" speakers and a pair of "front width" speakers. All those extra channels of sound create a fully engulfing 3D audio experience. You'll hear sounds like helicopters taking off with the crescendo of the rotors rising from the ground to the sky, then fading to a distant flank.

THX ensures state-of-the-art home theater performance
Lucasfilm Ltd.'s THX Select2 Plus certification delivers guaranteed home theater excellence. THX Certified receivers reproduce studio reference levels tailored to your room. Put simply, you will hear music and movie soundtracks free from distortion, just as the artists and recording engineers originally created them. Exclusive THX Plus listening modes keep surround effects detailed and accurate, even at lower listening levels.

The end of the "seat war" saga
In days of yore, you could expect a home theater system to sound just right in a single, "sweet-spot" in the room. The conflict over the best seat in the house is now settled with everyone the winner, thanks to Audyssey MultEQ® XT. This sophisticated system uses an included microphone to analyze sound from up to eight different listening positions, then automatically adjusts level, equalization, and delay settings for each of your speakers. You get precise response across a wide listening area instead of just a single sweet spot, so everyone will enjoy clear, well-balanced surround sound.

We heard something new
Onkyo recently announced that the Spotify® streaming service is now available on this receiver, along with several others in Onkyo's 2011 line. We decided to try it out. Our Onkyo receiver's on-screen display showed our Spotify Premium play lists, including our synced iTunes® library. We were able to search for more music via the receiver remote and virtual keyboard. Spotify is a cloud-based service with a music library of over 15 million songs that has only recently become available in the U.S.

You will need to download a free firmware upgrade. Go to Onkyo's website for instructions. Requires a wireless home network. Receiver requires wired connection to the router. Works only with Spotify premium service. Subscription fees apply. Broadband service required.

Assignable 135W x 9.2ch Amplifier: The Onkyo TX-NR1009 features a 9-channel amplifier rated at 135 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20Hz-20kHz, with 0.08%, driving 2 channels) and dual subwoofer preamp outputs.

  • 9.2ch Surround: The TX-NR1009 is designed to be used as a 9.2ch surround sound receiver with Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back & Front Wide/High speaker channels; along with dual preamp subwoofer outputs. Surround Back channels are needed for Dolby Pro Logic IIx, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby EX, DTS-HD, and DTS-ES. The Front Wide/High speaker channels are needed for during Dolby Pro Logic IIz, DTS Neo: X, and Audyssey DSX surround modes.
  • Bi-Amping Front Speakers: The Surround-Back speaker terminals can be reassigned and used along with the Front terminals to bi-amp the front speakers, providing improved bass and treble performance. When bi-amping the front speakers the receiver is limited to a 5.2ch speaker system in the main room.
  • Zone2/3: You can use speaker systems in three rooms with the TX-NR1009; a multi-channel audio/video system in your main listening room (Main Zone), a stereo audio system in a second room (Zone2), and an stereo audio system in a third room (Zone3). Both Zone2 & Zone3 have line level outputs and the receiver's amplifier channels can be assigned to power Zone2 and/or Zone3 speakers (limiting the number of powered channels available for the main room). When the Zone2 speakers are powered by the receiver, the Front Wide/Front B speakers are unavailable (limiting the Main Zone to 7.2ch). When the Zone3 speakers are powered by the receiver, Surround Back speakers are unavailable (limiting the Main Zone to 5.2ch).

WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks.

H.C.P.S. (High Current Power Supply): The Onkyo TX-NR1009 is equipped with a H.C.P.S. massive high power transformer to keep your music sounding great at low and high volume levels.

Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry: Optimum Gain Volume Control adjusts the gain so that less than half the amount of attenuation is needed, ensuring the signal never comes close to the noise floor. This protects the signal against noise, resulting in a dramatically clearer sound.

3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry: The TX-NR1009 employs 3-stage inverted Darlington circuitry for ultra-low distortion.

Jitter Cleaning Circuit Technology: The Onkyo TX-NR1009 utilizes a jitter cleaning circuit to virtually eliminate jitter and produce better sound quality.

THX Loudness Plus: THX Loudness Plus is a volume control technology featured in THX Ultra2 Plus and THX Select2 Plus certified receivers. With THX Loudness Plus, home theater audiences can experience the rich details in a surround mix at any volume level. THX Loudness Plus compensates for the tonal and spatial shifts that occur when the volume is reduced by intelligently adjusting ambient surround channel levels and frequency response. The THX Loudness Plus feature can be applied when listening in any THX listening mode.

Listening Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of listening modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your audio and video software. You can assign a default listening mode to each input source so that listening mode will be selected automatically when you select the corresponding input source. The following audio formats are supported by the receiver's Listening Mode - Mono, Stereo, 5.1-channel, and 7.1-channel.

Stereo/Mono Modes
Stereo Sound is output by the front left and right speakers and subwoofer.
Mono Use this mode when watching an old movie with a mono soundtrack.
Pure/Direct Modes
Pure Audio In this mode, the display and video circuitry are turned off, minimizing possible noise sources for the ultimate in high-fidelity audio reproduction.
Direct In this mode, audio from the input source is output without surround-sound processing. This mode delivers pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration.
Dolby Pro Logic
Dolby Pro Logic II Dolby Pro Logic II transforms high-quality stereo sound into 5.1-channel surround sound. Thanks to its full-range performance, you will hear all the detail and subtleties of a compelling five-channel Dolby surround sound mix from a stereo signal. You can select between PLII Movie, Music, and Game modes.
Dolby Pro Logic IIx Dolby Pro Logic IIx transforms high-quality stereo and 5.1ch sound into 6.1- or 7.1-cchannel surround sound. With Dolby Pro Logic IIx you experience engaging, natural surround sound. Special effects are more realistic than you ever thought possible. Your movies and television programming sound richer, with more depth. You can select between PLIIx Movie, Music, and Game modes.
Dolby Pro Logic IIz

Providing a dramatic listening alternative for 7.1 systems, Dolby Pro Logic IIz brings the added dimension of height to create an immersive 7.1-channel surround sound experience from any stereo, 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 movie, music, TV, or game audio source. Dolby Pro Logic IIz identifies and processes ambient sound energy and directs this information to front height speakers in a 7.1-channel environment.

Dolby Digital
Dolby Digital Dolby Digital has been selected as the default format for DVD video, standard 2 channel audio playback and HDTV Digital broadcasting. Dolby Digital features two independent surround channels giving same full range as the three front channels. Plus it adds a Low Frequency Effect channel LFE. Dolby Digital accomplishes this by using a technique called compression.
Dolby Digital Plus Dolby Digital Plus is based on core Dolby Digital technologies. Dolby Digital Plus is an advanced surround sound audio codec designed specifically for evolving media. Dolby Digital Plus brings cinematic sound to Blu-ray, broadcast, online, game, and mobile phone entertainment (up to 7.1ch)
Dolby Digital TrueHD Dolby TrueHD produces audio that is identical to and every bit as spectacular as the master recording. It lets you experience the full potential of Blu-ray Disc (up to 7.1ch), and is even ready for future HD delivery formats.
Dolby EX Dolby Digital EX takes the Dolby Digital 5.1-channel setup one step further with an additional center surround channel (reproduced through one or two speakers) for extra dimensional detail and an enveloping surround sound effect.
DTS
DTS DTS (Digital Theater Systems) uses the same concept as Dolby Digital, but implements a lower compression rate. This leads to more dynamic range, improved channel separation, and more subtle nuances.
DTS-HD High Resolution Audio DTS-HD Audio delivers sound quality that matches the clear and vivid images of high-definition video. Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs deliver five times the video resolution of standard DVD and produce images with stunning realism. But that's only half of the story. You need incredible sound to complete the high definition experience and DTS-HD Audio provides the highest quality multi-channel (7.1ch) sound possible. Movies come alive with sound as lifelike as the picture, and music becomes as real as a live performance.
Master Audio
DTS 96/24 DTS 96/24 offers a higher quality level of multi-channel audio (up to 5.1 channels) for standard DVDs. The "96" refers to a 96kHz sampling rate (compared to the typical 48kHz sampling rate.) The "24" refers to 24-bit depth, compared to 16-bit depth used for CD sound, which means there is more audio information present.
DTS-ES (Discrete/Matrix) DTS-ES (Discrete/Matrix) delivers 6.1 channels of discrete or matrixed audio. Movies encoded in DTS-ES will dramatically intensify the DTS surround effect with the addition of a surround center-channel speaker.
DTS Express DTS uses a system called DTS Express to deliver Secondary or Sub Audio to your player. The DTS Express audio is mixed with the Primary Audio, giving you an intensely great interactive surround experience.
DTS Neo: 6 DTS Neo:6 takes 2-channel (stereo) audio and completely transforms it into up to six full-bandwidth matrix channels of surround sound. Your home theater system will produce six and five separate channels, respectively, to match your speaker layout. DTS Neo:6 can also generate a center surround channel from 5.1 material.
DTS Neo: X DTS Neo: X provides 9.2-channels of surround sound, with height/wide speakers that create a natural sound field for an enveloping and lifelike 3-D effect. The height speaker configuration adds a vertical dimension for overhead sounds while the wide speakers provide smooth and seamless tracking of front-to-side sound for the most realistic sound experience.
Audyssey Surround
Audyssey DSX Audyssey DSX lets you augment a standard 7.1-channel surround set-up with two "front-high" and two "front-wide" channels. These extra speakers expand the height and width of the soundstage and help to produce a more realistic and immersive listening experience. These channels carry non-directional audio that add a new vertical and horizontal dimension to your movies and games. The soundstage of Audyssey DSX can be adjusted between -3dB to +3dB.
THX Certified
THX THX Select2 Plus AV receivers feature proprietary THX technologies which accurately translate movie soundtracks for home theater playback. You can select between THX Cinema, THX Music, THX Games, THX Select2 Cinema, THX Select2 Music, THX Select2 Games, THX Surround EX modes.
Onkyo Original DSP Modes
Orchestra For classical or operatic music.
Unplugged For acoustic instruments, vocals, and jazz.
Studio-Mix Suitable for rock or pop.
TV Logic Adds realistic acoustics to TV shows.
Game The receiver offers four different Gaming modes - RPG, Action, Rock, and Sports.
All Channel Stereo Stereo sound from all speakers. Ideal for background music.
Full Mono All speakers output the same sound in mono.
Theater Dimensional Theater-Dimensional circuitry takes the complexity out of conventional surround-sound setups and lets you experience the excitement of surround sound from as few as two ordinary speakers. Theater-Dimensional's unique multi-speaker modes let you place up to five speakers conveniently by the TV, for the most realistic virtual-surround sound possible.
Other Listening Modes
DSD Audio signals are stored as single-bit values at a high-frequency sampling rate of 2.8224 MHz, while noise shaping and oversampling are used to reduce distortion - providing a better audio quality with a dynamic range of up to 128 db.
Multichannel This mode is used with PCM multichannel sources.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:

  • Panorama: Broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu.
  • Dimension: Allows you to move the sound field forward or backward.
  • Center Width: Allows you to adjust the width of the center channel.

Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).

Listening Angle: While listening in the Theater Dimensional mode you can adjust the listening angle to either Wide (if listening angle is 40-degrees) or Narrow (if listening angle is 20-degrees).

Audyssey MultEQ XT Automatic Speaker Setup: With the supplied speaker setup microphone, Audyssey MultEQ XT determines the number of speakers connected, their optimum crossover frequencies, and their distances from the primary listening position, then adjusts each automatically. The room's acoustical properties are then measured and corrected over the listening area in both the frequency and time domain. There is a threaded insert on the bottom of the microphone so it can be mounted on a tripod for accurate listening position placement. Up to 8 listening position measurements are taken to optimize the surround effect for a broad area. If you prefer you can also setup your speaker system manually:

  • Subwoofer: Yes or No for subwoofer connection.
  • Crossover: Set the crossover point for each set of speakers (front, center, surround, surround back, front height, front wide) and the subwoofer individually. The speaker crossovers can bet set to full bandwidth, 40 Hz, 50 Hz, 60 Hz, 70 Hz, 80 Hz (THX standard), 90 Hz, 100 Hz, 120 Hz, 150 Hz, or 200 Hz. The subwoofer crossover can be set to bypass, 80, 90, 100, or 120Hz.
  • Equalizer Settings: With the Equalizer settings, you can adjust the tone of the speakers and subwoofer individually with a 5-band EQ. You can adjust each frequency band (63, 250, 1000, 4000, and 16000Hz) for each speaker from -6dB to +6dB. You can also adjust each frequency band (25, 40, 63, 100, and 160Hz) for the subwoofer from -6 dB to +6 dB.
  • Speaker Distance: The distance from the listening position to each speaker can be set from six inches to 30 feet in six inch increments.
  • Speaker Levels: The output level of each speaker is adjustable +/-12dB; -15dB to +12dB for the subwoofer.
  • Subwoofer Phase: Switch between 0- or 180-degress.

Audyssey Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ solves the problem of deteriorating sound quality as volume is decreased by taking into account human perception and room acoustics. Dynamic EQ selects the best possible frequency response and surround levels moment-by-moment as volume is changed. The result is bass response, tonal balance and surround impression that remain constant despite changes in volume. Audyssey Dynamic EQ combines information from incoming source levels with actual output sound levels in the room, a prerequisite for delivering a loudness correction solution. Audyssey Dynamic EQ works in tandem with Audyssey 2EQ to provide well-balanced sound for every listener at any volume level.

Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume looks at the preferred volume setting by the user and then monitors how the volume of program material is being perceived by listeners in real time to decide whether an adjustment is needed. Whenever necessary, Dynamic Volume makes the necessary rapid or gradual adjustments to maintain the desired playback volume level while optimizing the dynamic range. Audyssey Dynamic EQ is integrated in Dynamic Volume so that as the playback volume is adjusted automatically, the perceived bass response, tonal balance, surround impression, and dialog clarity remain the same whether watching movies, flipping between television channels, or changing from stereo to surround sound content.

Bass And Treble: You can independently adjust the Bass (50Hz) and Treble (20kHz) of the TX-NR1009 from -10 to +10 dB.

Double Bass: This setting boosts the bass output by feeding bass sound from the front left, right, and center channels to the subwoofer.

Music Optimizer: The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sampling rate below 48kHz and analog input signals.

Re-EQ (THX): With the Re-EQ (THX) function, you can compensate for harsh high-frequency content, making it more suitable for listening.

Dolby Volume: Dolby Volume provides comfortable listening, effectively controlling the volume level difference without unnatural changes in volume or sound quality to recreate the balance and nuance of the source audio. Dolby Volume automatically adjusts the difference in volume levels which can occur between different contents or source components, freeing you from having to make volume adjustments. Also, by adjusting the frequency balance according to the playback volume, it recreates the original source audio.

Late Night Feature: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: Off, Low, and High.

Note: This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature will vary based on the individual software package.

Whole House Mode: The Whole House Mode is useful when you want to add extra background music to your house party; this allows you to enjoy the same stereo music as the main room in separate rooms (Multi Zone: Powered Zone 2). The Whole House Mode selects the same input source for Multi Zone as the main room's.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

Assignable Digital Inputs: The Onkyo receiver is equipped with three optical digital inputs (2 rear/1 front) and three coaxial digital inputs (3 rear). All six digital inputs are assignable. You can choose auto decoding , PCM, or DTS for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel, while DTS decodes only DTS formatted sources.

Binding Post Speaker Terminals: There are color-coded binding post connectors for the left front, right front, center, left surround, right surround, left surround back, right surround back, left front high/zone 3, right front high/zone 3, left front wide/zone 2, and right front wide/zone 2 speakers. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs.

Note: You can select a speaker impedance of 4 ohms or 6-16 ohms

7.1ch Multichannel Input: The receiver is equipped with one set of 8-channel RCA type inputs for use with an outboard 5.1 or 7.1 channel decoder; there are inputs for left front, right front, center, left surround, right surround, surround back left, surround back right, and subwoofer.

9.2ch Pre Outs: The Onkyo TX-NR1009 features 9.2ch pre-amp outputs (Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back, Front Wide/Height, and dual subwoofer) for connection of an external power amplifier.

Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the main speakers are automatically muted (the Powered Zone 2 speakers are not muted).

Note: When you connect an iPod or iPhone to the USB port on this receiver, no sound will be output from the headphone jack.

HQV Vida Video Processor (VHD1900): The TX-NR1009 is equipped with the sophisticated HQV Vida VHD1900 processor to enhance the quality of both standard-definition and high-definition video sources. The chip employs multi-cadence tracking, expanded 12-bit color processing, and four-field motion-adaptive de-interlacing to optimize video quality and detail. Two new HQV technologies are incorporated into the VHD1900: "Auto HQV" works to automatically enhance the incoming image, while "HQV StreamClean" cleans up compressed video in real time by eliminating mosquito and block noise from lower-quality sources such as online video sites.

HDMI (v1.4): The TX-NR1009 has eight HDMI v1.4 inputs (7 rear/1 front). The front jack is fixed as the Aux input, while the six rear panel jacks are assignable to any of the other inputs. There are two HDMI monitor outputs; both outputs can be active simultaneously and will pass digital audio and video. The HDMI inputs will support uncompressed standard or high definition digital video along with the following audio signals: 2-channel linear PCM, Multichannel linear PCM, and Bitstream. The receiver's HDMI circuitry allows the receiver to output an HDMI audio signal from its speaker outputs, headphone out, and HDMI out so you don't have to run additional analog or digital cables. The HDMI inputs accept 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p signals and the analog video inputs (composite/component/S-video) are converted to HDMI for transfer to the TV.

Note: The 2 HDMI outputs display the same video signal and can be used simultaneously.

Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K Upscaling: The Onkyo TX-NR1009 utilizes a Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K Upscaling and video processing. The Marvel Qdeo Video Chip produces quiet and natural video, free from noise and artifacts. Analog video signals (composite/component/S-video/PC) are converted to HDMI and can be scaled to the resolution set in the menu: Through (no scaling), Auto (automatically scaled to the highest resolution supported by the display), 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p.

HDMI Through: When enabling the HDMI Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "on" or in "standby" both audio and video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver HDMI monitor output. You can select between 3 HDMI Through functions modes.

  • Auto: Detects the signal and automatically selects the input sources.
  • Source: Selects the input source (BD/DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT, Game, PC, Aux, TV/CD, Port) for which the HDMI Through function in enabled.
  • Last: The HDMI Trough function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "standby" mode.

3D-Compatible: The TX-NR1009's HDMI v.1.4 connections will accept 3D video from your 3D-ready Blu-ray player and output the video signal in 3D to your 3D-ready HDTV.

x.v.Color: The AV receiver supports x.v.Color, offering a wider color range than the current broadcast standard. For the x.v.Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Deep Color: The Onkyo receiver also supports Deep Color which allows the color depth of video signals passing through HDMI to be raised. The number of colors that could be expressed by 1 pixel was 24 bits (16,777,216 colors) with a standard HDMI jack. However, the number of colors which can be expressed by 1 pixel is 36 bits with a Deep Color enabled HDMI jack. Since the gradation of the depth of a color can be expressed more finely with more bits, continuous color changes can be more smoothly expressed. For the Deep Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Note: x.v. Color and Deep Color technology are supported only when source product, HDMI cable, media and HDTV all support those features.

Auto Lip Sync: The Lip Sync function can automatically synchronize HDMI audio and video that has gotten out of sync due to the complex digital video processing being performed by your HDMI-compatible TV. With HDMI Lip Sync, the audio delay required to synchronize the audio and video is calculated and applied automatically by the AV receiver.

A/V Sync Control: Occasionally, you may need to manually adjust the audio/video signals that are not properly synchronized manually. Typically when using a progressive scanning DVD player. You can correct this by delaying the audio; options are 0 (no delay) to 800 milliseconds, in 10 millisecond steps.

Component Video: There are 2 component video inputs and 1 component video output. The component video inputs and outputs have a bandwidth of 5Hz to 100MHz.

Note: The receiver also includes composite and S-video terminals.

Front-Panel AV Input: The receiver features a front-panel AV input for easily connecting a portable device; there are stereo RCA, composite video, optical digital, and HDMI jacks.

Picture Adjust: Using the Picture Adjust feature, you can adjust the picture quality and reduce any noise appearing on your TV screen.

  • Wide Mode: Auto, Full, Zoom, Wide Zoom, or 4:3.
  • Picture Mode: Custom (all settings can be performed manually), ISF (Day/Night), Cinema (for movies), Game (for gaming), Streaming (reduces mosquito/block noise), Through (changes resolution), Direct (no adjustment).
  • Picture Settings: You can change the following settings to be suitable for your movie or game screen.
    • Picture Adjustments: You can adjust Brightness (Red/Green/Blue), Contrast (Red/Green/Blue), Hue, Saturation, Color Temperature, and Gamma (RGB) of picture.
    • Game Mode: If video signal delay occurs during playback on a video component (i.e., game console), select the corresponding input source and set the "Game Mode" setting to "On". The delay will decrease but in return the picture quality will become poor.
    • Film Mode: Video (Film Mode detection is not applied and the input signal is handled as a video source) Auto (detects whether the input signal is a video or a movie. If it is a movie, the appropriate conversion is applied).
    • Edge Enhancement: With Edge Enhancement, you can make the picture appear sharper.
    • Noise Reduction: With this setting, you can reduce noise appearing on the screen.
    • Mosquito NR: With Mosquito Noise Reduction, you can remove the shimmering or haziness that sometimes appears around objects in the picture. Mosquito noise can be an issue with overly compressed MPEG content.
    • Block NR: With Block Noise Reduction, you can remove the block distortion that sometimes appears in the picture. Block noise can be an issue with overly compressed MPEG content.

ISF (Imaging Science Foundation) Video Calibration: The Onkyo TN-NR1009 offers ISF (Imaging Science Foundation) video calibration for optimal video performance. The receiver has been designed to incorporate setup and calibration standards established by the Imaging Science Foundation (ISF). The ISF has developed carefully crafted, industry-recognized standards for optimal video performance and has implemented a training program for technicians and installers to use these standards to obtain optimal picture quality from the receiver. Accordingly, Onkyo recommends that setup and calibration be performed by an ISF Certified installation technician.

Onkyo TX-NR1009

Written By Tom sorrow, Cedar park on Sunday, July 08, 2012

Lots of features and out/input. Decent sound output. Run really hot to have sweet sound (wonder with all the technology today and here we are an ancient class AB. my selfmade class T amp sound comparable a and no heat) Slow hdmi switching(?). Sluggish remote control with setup menu in NET /USB mode Annoying muting on off with tone control. Excessive heat for the HDMI circuit board. All of this thousands dollars worthy is might be just for the mutiEQ XT. I guess nothing really is improving after such a very long time. They just digitalize the volume controller and add a DSP circuit. Common Onkyo, you can do better than this
Pros:
MutiEQXT Lots of input/outputs Sound really sweet when getting hot about 65 degree
Cons:
Bad remote control Annoying mute/unmute when adjusting tone control make its difficult to following the tone change. Ancient technology disguise with digital circuit T

WOW!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm not going to get into all the technical aspects as you can read about that in detail here at Crutchfield. I did bi-amp my main speakers initially only to find out that limits my sound to 5.2. I put them back to STD and went w/ 9.2. I bought 7 new Klipsch reference speakers at the same time and implemented my old Polk Audios for the remaining speakers. It took hours of running wire and making ends to get ready. This Onkyo has lot of adjustability and is overwhelmingly complex. I did not know where to begin in the 175 pg manual. I went w/ the Audyssey MultEQ XT Automatic Speaker Setup on pg 31. This makes life easy. You follow the instructions and place the mic and it just sets up your speaker levels etc. for you. A few days later I realized I needed to plug my HDTV and cable box in to see all the menus on my TV for custom speaker and audio features. Some of this shows up in the receiver display, but you get more after you plug HDTV etc. in. Be Patient and try all the settings and sound options. Get familiar with all of it. Most likely if you are not happy it's because some setting is not to your liking. I went through a lot of that at first. The video set up is equally complex and customizable. You can run your TV audio only as an input, which I did at first, keeping the HDTV video settings. I would say as far as video goes right out of the box it all seems rather dark. Brightness, contrast etc. are all customizable. I have much to learn still. Summary WOW!
Pros:
Audyssey MultEQ XT Automatic Speaker Setup, Adjustability, sound quality, appearance, upgadeable firm ware, many inputs, use is fairly intuitive
Cons:
overwhelminngly complex at first/big learning curve.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A nice unit for sure, worth the money. Much better bass output than my $1K Demmon. Bass, treble plus onboard EQ. Menu's R easy to figure out. Non Smug exterior, THX for movies. I think next time I save a few grand I'll upgrade to another Onkyo...

Sounds Great!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Movies sound awsome! I set up 5.1 + Front Wides + Front Height speakers to take advantage of the Neo: X processing and it really sounds great. I love Audyssey's auto equalizer and made almost no changes after running the MultEQ XT. I purchased the usb wireless UWF1 but have not hooked up to the internet yet, hopefully this weekend! I have not done a head to head comparison of DSX vs. Neo:X yet.
