Onkyo's top receiver
Onkyo's flagship TX-NR5009 demonstrates the many ways a top-notch receiver can add to your home theater experience. Blu-ray movies, HDTV programs, and video games come to life around you with atmospheric sound to match the pristine images on-screen.

Packed with audio muscle
Both music and movie soundtracks have sudden spikes in volume that can strain a receiver's power supply enough to add distortion and reduce impact. The 'NR5009's power train includes a clean toroidal transformer backed by three block components. The result — unfailing performance — even under demanding conditions. Six 32-bit Burr-Brown DACs deliver precise, high-fidelity sound from every digital source, whether it's a disc or a music file. And even if your room is large, this receiver's THX Ultra2 Plus certification means it has the power and processing to deliver a theater-quality sonic experience.

Video horsepower to spare
High-definition video requires tremendous processing capability. That's why Onkyo included the HQV® Vida™ processor which ensures that all of your connected video sources will look their best. And for DVDs, this circuitry teams with a high-performance Qdeo™ scaler that upconverts standard-def discs to near-HD quality.

Music from your iPod®, the Internet, and more
The front-panel USB input takes the goodness of your iPod and makes it even better. This direct digital connection doesn't just charge your player's battery — it supercharges your music. The 'NR5009's built-in digital-to-analog converters make high bit-rate music files sound like the original CD. Connect the receiver to your home network via its Ethernet port and you can enjoy music stored on your PC through your full-fledged, high-performance audio system, instead of a pair of pint-sized computer speakers. Plus you can also enjoy thousands of Internet radio stations — or let PANDORA® Internet radio create a set of customized "stations" based on your own tastes. Or add Onkyo's HD Radio tuner to listen to the free digital over-the-air programming that many AM and FM stations now broadcast.

DTS Neo:X™ enables over-the-top surround sound
Onkyo is the first receiver manufacturer to included DTS Neo:X technology. It lets you use the receiver's nine channels of power to hook up the traditional five speakers of a home theater setup, plus a pair of "front height" speakers and a pair of "front width" speakers. You have some other speaker configuration options as well — the best choice will depend in part on the size and shape of your room. All those extra channels of sound create a fully engulfing 3D audio experience so realistic, you may find yourself diving for cover next time you watch that action flick.

THX® certified to ensure state-of-the-art home theater performance
Lucasfilm Ltd.'s THX Ultra2 Plus certification delivers guaranteed home theater excellence. THX-certified receivers reproduce studio reference levels tailored to your room. Put simply, you will hear music and movie soundtracks free from distortion, just as the artists and recording engineers originally created them. Exclusive THX Plus listening modes keep surround effects detailed and accurate, even at lower listening levels.

Custom setup without the customary installer's fee
Even the best receivers can be held back by the acoustic imperfections of a room. Thanks to Audyssey MultEQ® XT32 your system can breath again. This sophisticated calibration program uses an included microphone to analyze sound from up to eight different listening positions, then automatically adjusts level, equalization, and delay settings for each of your speakers. 'XT32 is an advanced version with greater enhancements for your surround speakers and sub. You get precise response across a wide listening area instead of just a single sweet spot, so everyone will enjoy clear, well-balanced surround sound.

We heard something new
Onkyo recently announced that the Spotify® online music streaming service is now available on this receiver, along with several others in Onkyo's 2011 line. We decided to try it out. Our Onkyo receiver's on-screen display showed our Spotify Premium playlists, including our synced iTunes® library. We were able to search for more music via the receiver remote and virtual keyboard. Dual Push-Pull Design (with 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry): The Onkyo TX-NR5009 employs an efficient dual push-pull amplification design originally created for Onkyo's much higher-end receivers. The TX-NR5009's dual push-pull amplification design uses different transistors on each channel to separately amplify the positive & negative halves of the waveform. Meanwhile, 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry helps reduce distortion at the output stage. Together with the dual push-pull amplifier design, the 3-stage inverted Darlington Circuitry shapes a clean, consistent signal to send to the outputs for ultra-low distortion & greater sound quality.

WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks.

Toriodal Transformer + Independent Power Supply: Onkyo's H.C.P.S. (High Current Power Supply) has the ability to respond to the wide dynamic range of home theater. A massive toroidal transformer efficiently delivers a steady source of power under any conditions. It has been designed to minimize noise radiation into the surrounding circuitry for a super-clean signal. In addition, selected Onkyo models feature separate transformers for audio & video processing, which means the system works more comfortably & efficiently.

Linear Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry: Linear Optimum Gain Volume Control adjusts the gain so that less than half the amount of attenuation is needed, ensuring the signal never comes close to the noise floor. This protects the signal against noise, resulting in a dramatically clearer sound.

Separate Panel Construction w/ Gold-Plated Connectors: The TX-NR5009 features separate aluminum panels for the sides & front to reduce unwanted vibrations caused by internal resonance. Compared to a one-piece chassis design, this construction method offers greater rigidity and improved noise reduction. The Onkyo TX-NR5009 is fitted with gold-plated HDMI terminals, speaker posts, and A/V inputs for high-quality construction & sound.

Assignable 145W x 9.2ch Amplifier: The Onkyo TX-NR5009 features a 9 channel amplifier rate at 145 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20Hz-20kHz, with 0.05%, driving 2 channels) and dual subwoofer preamp outputs. The 9 amplifier channels can be assigned to power numerous speaker combinations for surround, stereo, & multi-zone applications.

    • 9.2ch Surround: The TX-NR5009 is designed to be used as a 9.2ch surround sound receiver with Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back & Front Wide/High speaker channels; along with dual preamp subwoofer outputs. Surround Back channels are needed for Dolby Pro Logic IIx, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby EX, DTS-HD, and DTS-ES. The Front Wide/High speaker channels are needed for during Dolby Pro Logic IIz, DTS Neo: X, and Audyssey DSX surround modes.
    • Bi-Amping Front Speakers: The Front-High speaker terminals can be reassigned and used along with the Front terminals to bi-amp your front speakers, providing improved bass & treble performance. By using the Front-High speaker terminals to bi-amp the front speakers (and not the Surround Back terminals), the receiver is still capable of a 7.2ch speaker system in the main room.
    • A & B Speakers: Unlike most receivers, the A & B speaker outputs on the TX-NR5009 cannot be played at the same time. They are designed to connect two sets of speakers in the same room. For example, the speakers can be part of the 7.2ch surround system used when watching movies, and the B speakers can be used for more critical music listening in stereo. Speakers A & B can be wired normally or bi-amped, but cannot be bi-amped at the same time. If you plan to use B speakers, then you cannot connect Front Wide speakers or power Zone2 speakers.
    • Zone2/3: You can use speaker systems in three rooms with the TX-NR5009; a multi-channel audio/video system in your main listening room (Main Zone), a stereo audio/video system in a second room (Zone2), and an stereo audio only system in a third room (Zone3). Both Zone2 & Zone3 have line level outputs (Zone2 also has a composite video output) and the receiver's amplifier channels can be assigned to power Zone2 and/or Zone3 speakers (limiting the number of powered channels available for the main room). When the Zone2 speakers are powered by the receiver, the Front Wide/Front B speakers are unavailable (limiting the Main Zone to 7.2ch). When the Zone3 speakers are powered by the receiver, Surround Back speakers are unavailable (limiting the Main Zone to 5.2ch).

32-Bit TI Burr-Brown DACs (Digital-to-Analog Converters): This receiver is equipped with high-quality 192 kHz/32-bit TI Burr-Brown digital-to-analog converters to decode & playback high-resolution recordings with less jitter and clearer sound. These next-generation DACs employ an advanced Texas Instruments (TI) architecture to achieve excellent dynamic performance & improved tolerance to clock jitter.

Jitter Cleaning Circuit Technology: The Onkyo TX-NR5009 utilizes a jitter cleaning circuit to virtually eliminate jitter and produce better sound quality.

VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry): Conventional D/A conversion methods reduce digital pulse noise at the conversion stage, but can't remove it completely. Previously only found on higher-end components, VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) employs a unique D/A conversion circuit to overcome this problem. Data is converted between sampling points and these points are joined with analog vectors in real-time to produce a smooth output wave form. The result is a virtually noiseless, smooth analog signal based on the digital source to bring out even the most subtle of nuances in your music, movie soundtracks, and even MP3.

32-Bit Processing DSP: The Onkyo TX-NR5009 is equipped with a powerful and highly accurate 32-bit processing DSP (Digital Signal Processor) for better surround sound reproduction.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Onkyo TX-NR5009 AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

THX Certified: The TX-NR5009 AV receiver is THX certified. Founded by George Lucas, THX develops stringent standards that ensure movies are reproduced in movie theaters and home theaters just as the director intended. From early design concepts to product rollout, THX works with its manufacturing partners at each step of product development. Every detail is meticulously mapped to the THX performance standards. And THX engineers spend countless hours testing and analyzing each product for sound quality, usability and interoperability. The result of this collaborative process is a THX Certified receiver, amplifier or pre-amplifier designed from the ground-up to present your favorite movies, music, and games in 5.1ch to 7.1ch surround sound loud and clear at studio reference volumes.

    • THX: THX Modes (Cinema, Music, or Game) carefully optimize the tonal and spatial characteristics of the soundtrack for reproduction in the home-theater environment. They can be used with various multichannel sources. Surround back speaker output depends on the source material and the selected listening mode.
    • THX Ultra2+ (w/ THX Loudness Plus): The ultimate benchmark for home audio performance, THX Ultra2 Plus is specified for rooms where the screen-to-seat viewing distance is more than 12 feet and the room volume is 3,000 cubic feet or greater. This mode expands 5.1-channel sources for 7.1- channel playback. It does this by analyzing the composition of the surround source, optimizing the ambient and directional sounds to produce the surround back channel output. You can choose between Cinema, Music, or Game mode. THX Loudness Plus is a volume control technology featured in THX Ultra2+ certified components. With THX Loudness Plus, home theater audiences can experience the rich details in a surround mix at any volume level. THX Loudness Plus compensates for the tonal and spatial shifts that occur when the volume is reduced by intelligently adjusting ambient surround channel levels and frequency response. The THX Loudness Plus feature can be applied when listening in any THX listening mode.
    • THX Surround EX: This mode expands 5.1-channel sources for 6.1/7.1- channel playback. It's especially suited to Dolby Digital EX sources. THX Surround EX, also known as Dolby Digital Surround EX, is a joint development between Dolby Laboratories and THX Ltd.

Onkyo Original DSP Modes: Onkyo's Original DSP Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. You can choose from the following:

    • Orchestra: For classical or operatic music.
    • Unplugged: For acoustic instruments, vocals, and jazz.
    • Studio-Mix: Suitable for rock or pop.
    • TV Logic: Adds realistic acoustics to TV shows.
    • Game: The receiver offers four different Gaming modes - RPG, Action, Rock, and Sports.
    • All Ch Stereo: Stereo sound from all speakers. Ideal for background music.
    • Full Mono: All speakers output the same sound in mono.
    • Theater-Dimensional (T-D): Theater-Dimensional circuitry takes the complexity out of conventional surround-sound setups and lets you experience the excitement of surround sound from as few as two ordinary speakers. Theater-Dimensional's unique multi-speaker modes let you place up to five speakers conveniently by the TV, for the most realistic virtual-surround sound possible.

Audiophile Listening Modes: The Onkyo TX-NR5009 offers two audiophile listening modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. In Direct mode, audio from the input source is output without surround-sound processing. This mode delivers pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration. In Pure Audio mode, the display and video circuitry are turned off, minimizing possible noise sources for the ultimate in high-fidelity audio reproduction.

Audyssey Technology: The TXN-R5009 features a full package of Audyssey audio technologies for optimal sound quality. Audyssey Dynamic Volume offers real-time volume adjustment, while Audyssey DynamicEQ improves your system's surround effects during low volume levels. Audyssey MultEQ XT32 automatically sets speakers to suit your room's listening environment and the speakers' characteristics. The AV receiver even offers Audyssey DSX which adds front speaker effects.

    • Audyssey MultEQ XT32 Automatic Speaker Setup: With the supplied speaker setup microphone, Audyssey MultEQ XT32 determines the number of speakers connected, their optimum crossover frequencies, and their distances from the primary listening position, then adjusts each automatically. The room's acoustical properties are then measured and corrected over the listening area in both the frequency and time domain. There is a threaded insert on the bottom of the microphone so it can be mounted on a tripod for accurate listening position placement. Up to 8 listening position measurements are taken to optimize the surround effect for a broad area. If you prefer you can also setup your speaker system manually.
    • Audyssey Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ solves the problem of deteriorating sound quality as volume is decreased by taking into account human perception and room acoustics. Dynamic EQ selects the best possible frequency response and surround levels moment-by-moment as volume is changed. The result is bass response, tonal balance and surround impression that remain constant despite changes in volume. Audyssey Dynamic EQ combines information from incoming source levels with actual output sound levels in the room, a prerequisite for delivering a loudness correction solution. Audyssey Dynamic EQ works in tandem with Audyssey 2EQ to provide well-balanced sound for every listener at any volume level.
    • Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume looks at the preferred volume setting by t he user and then monitors how the volume of program material is being perceived by listeners in real time to decide whether an adjustment is needed. Whenever necessary, Dynamic Volume makes the necessary rapid or gradual adjustments to maintain the desired playback volume level while optimizing the dynamic range. Audyssey Dynamic EQ is integrated in Dynamic Volume so that as the playback volume is adjusted automatically, the perceived bass response, tonal balance, surround impression, and dialog clarity remain the same whether watching movies, flipping between television channels, or changing from stereo to surround sound content.
    • Audyssey Dynamic Surround Expansion (DSX): Audyssey DSX adds front effect speakers to improve spatial sound reproduction. Starting with a 5.1 channel system, DSX adds front Wide and/or front Height channels for better sound staging (although both wide and height speakers can be added, only one pair is used at a time). DSX also applies Surround Envelopment Processing to enhance the blend between the front and surround channels.

Surround Parameters: The Onkyo TX-NR5009 lets you tweak and fine tune specific surround sound modes to suit your preference.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust; Panorama: (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect), Dimension (allows you to move the sound field forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
    • Pro Logic IIz Height Gain: The Height Gain Control in Dolby Pro Logic IIz enables the listener to select how much gain is applied to the front high speakers. There are three settings, "Low", "Mid" and "High", and the front high speakers are accentuated in that order. While "Mid" is the default listening setting, the listener may adjust the Height Gain Control to their personal preference.
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Screen Centered Dialogue: By using the front high speakers, this function moves the center image of the dialogue upwards, so that the image of dialogue is fixed to the display height.
    • Listening Angle: While listening in the Theater Dimensional mode you can adjust the listening angle to either Wide (if listening angle is 40°) or Narrow (if listening angle is 20°).
    • THX Loudness Plus: THX Loudness Plus is a volume control technology featured in THX Ultra2 Plus certified receivers.

Tone Control: You can independently adjust the Bass (50Hz) & Treble (20kHz) of the TX-NR5009 from -10 to +10 dB.

Double Bass: This setting boosts the bass output by feeding bass sound from the front left, right, and center channels to the subwoofer.

Music Optimizer: The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sampling rate below 48kHz and analog input signals.

Re-EQ (THX): With the Re-EQ (THX) function, you can compensate for harsh high-frequency content, making it more suitable for listening.

Dolby Volume: Dolby Volume provides comfortable listening, effectively controlling the volume level difference without unnatural changes in volume or sound quality to recreate the balance and nuance of the source audio. Dolby Volume automatically adjusts the difference in volume levels which can occur between different contents or source components, freeing you from having to make volume adjustments. Also, by adjusting the frequency balance according to the playback volume, it recreates the original source audio.

Late Night Feature: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: Off, Low, and High. This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature will vary based on the individual software package.

IntelliVolume: The IntelliVolume setup function allows you set a volume correction value for each source, to prevent large jumps in volume when switching from one source to another. This feature eliminates the inconvenience of manually adjusting the volume control each time you switch from a source with a weak signal to a source with a strong signal and vice versa.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Onkyo AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Assignable Digital Inputs: The Onkyo receiver is equipped with four optical digital inputs (3 rear/1 front) and three coaxial digital inputs (3 rear). All six digital inputs are assignable. You can choose auto decoding , PCM, or DTS for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel, while DTS decodes only DTS formatted sources.
    • Binding Post Speaker Terminals: There are color-coded binding post connectors for the left front, right front, center, left surround, right surround, left surround back/zone 3, right surround back/zone 3, left front high, right front high, left front wide/zone 2, and right front wide/zone 2 speakers. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs. You can select a speaker impedance of 4 ohms or 6-16 ohms
    • 7.1ch Multichannel Input: The receiver is equipped with one set of 8-channel RCA type inputs for use with an outboard 5.1 or 7.1 channel decoder; there are inputs for left front, right front, center, left surround, right surround, surround back left, surround back right, and subwoofer.
    • 9.2ch Pre Outs: The Onkyo TX-NR5009 features 9.2ch pre-amp outputs (Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back, Front Wide/Height, and dual subwoofer) for connection of an external power amplifier.
    • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the main speakers are automatically muted (the Powered Zone 2/3 speakers are not muted). When you connect an iPod or iPhone to the USB port on this receiver, no sound will be output from the headphone jack.

    Video Features

HQV Vida Video Processor (VHD1900): The TX-NR5009 is equipped with the sophisticated HQV Vida VHD1900 processor to enhance the quality of both standard-definition and high-definition video sources. The chip employs multi-cadence tracking, expanded 12-bit color processing, and four-field motion-adaptive de-interlacing to optimize video quality and detail. Two new HQV technologies are incorporated into the VHD1900: "Auto HQV" works to automatically enhance the incoming image, while "HQV StreamClean" cleans up compressed video in real time by eliminating mosquito and block noise from lower-quality sources such as online video sites.

HDMI (v1.4): The TX-NR5009 has eight HDMI v1.4 inputs (7 rear/1 front). The front jack is fixed as the Aux input, while the six rear panel jacks are assignable to any of the other inputs. There are two HDMI monitor outputs; both outputs can be active simultaneously and will pass digital audio and video. The HDMI inputs will support uncompressed standard or high definition digital video along with the following audio signals: 2-channel linear PCM, Multichannel linear PCM, and Bitstream. The receiver's HDMI circuitry allows the receiver to output an HDMI audio signal from its speaker outputs, headphone out, and HDMI out so you don't have to run additional analog or digital cables. The HDMI inputs accept 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p signals and the analog video inputs (composite/component/S-video) are converted to HDMI for transfer to the TV. The 2 HDMI outputs display the same video signal and can be used simultaneously.

Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K Upscaling: The Onkyo TX-NR5009 utilizes a Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K Upscaling and video processing. The Marvel Qdeo Video Chip produces quiet and natural video, free from noise and artifacts. Analog video signals (composite/component/S-video/PC) are converted to HDMI and can be scaled to the resolution set in the menu: Through (no scaling), Auto (automatically scaled to the highest resolution supported by the display), 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p.

HDMI Through: When enabling the HDMI Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "on" or in "standby" both audio and video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver HDMI monitor output. You can select between 3 HDMI Through functions modes.

    • Auto: Detects the signal and automatically selects the input sources.
    • Source: Selects the input source (BD/DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT, Game, PC, Aux, TV/CD, Port) for which the HDMI Through function in enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Trough function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "standby" mode.

3D-Compatible: The TX-NR5009's HDMI v.1.4 connections will accept 3D video from your 3D-ready Blu-ray player and output the video signal in 3D to your 3D-ready HDTV.

x.v.Color: The AV receiver supports x.v.Color, offering a wider color range than the current broadcast standard. For the x.v.Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Deep Color: The Onkyo receiver also supports Deep Color which allows the color depth of video signals passing through HDMI to be raised. The number of colors that could be expressed by 1 pixel was 24 bits (16,777,216 colors) with a standard HDMI jack. However, the number of colors which can be expressed by 1 pixel is 36 bits with a Deep Color enabled HDMI jack. Since the gradation of the depth of a color can be expressed more finely with more bits, continuous color changes can be more smoothly expressed. For the Deep Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Auto Lip Sync: The Lip Sync function can automatically synchronize HDMI audio and video that has gotten out of sync due to the complex digital video processing being performed by your HDMI-compatible TV. With HDMI Lip Sync, the audio delay required to synchronize the audio and video is calculated and applied automatically by the AV receiver.

A/V Sync Control: Occasionally, you may need to manually adjust the audio/video signals that are not properly synchronized manually. Typically when using a progressive scanning DVD player. You can correct this by delaying the audio; options are 0 (no delay) to 800 milliseconds, in 10 millisecond steps.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

Component Video: There are 3 component video inputs and 1 component video output. The component video inputs and outputs have a bandwidth of 5Hz to 100MHz. The receiver also includes composite & S-video terminals.

Front-Panel AV Input: The receiver features a front-panel AV input for easily connecting a portable device; there are stereo RCA, composite video, optical digital, and HDMI jacks.

Picture Adjust: Using the Picture Adjust feature, you can adjust the picture quality and reduce any noise appearing on your TV screen.

    • Wide Mode: Auto, Full, Zoom, Wide Zoom, or 4:3.
    • Picture Mode: Custom (all settings can be performed manually), ISF (Day/Night), Cinema (for movies), Game (for gaming), Streaming (reduces mosquito/block noise), Through (changes resolution), Direct (no adjustment).
    • Picture Settings: You can change the following settings to be suitable for your movie or game screen.
      • Picture Adjustments: You can adjust Brightness (Red/Green/Blue), Contrast (Red/Green/Blue), Hue, Saturation, Color Temperature, and Gamma (RGB) of picture.
      • Game Mode: If video signal delay occurs during playback on a video component (i.e., game console), select the corresponding input source and set the "Game Mode" setting to "On". The delay will decrease but in return the picture quality will become poor.
      • Film Mode: Video (Film Mode detection is not applied and the input signal is handled as a video source) Auto (detects whether the input signal is a video or a movie. If it is a movie, the appropriate conversion is applied).
      • Edge Enhancement: With Edge Enhancement, you can make the picture appear sharper.
      • Noise Reduction: With this setting, you can reduce noise appearing on the screen.
      • Mosquito NR: With Mosquito Noise Reduction, you can remove the shimmering or haziness that sometimes appears around objects in the picture. Mosquito noise can be an issue with overly compressed MPEG content.
      • Block NR: With Block Noise Reduction, you can remove the block distortion that sometimes appears in the picture. Block noise can be an issue with overly compressed MPEG content.

ISF (Imaging Science Foundation) Video Calibration: The Onkyo TN-NR5009 offers ISF (Imaging Science Foundation) video calibration for optimal video performance. The receiver has been designed to incorporate setup and calibration standards established by the Imaging Science Foundation (ISF). The ISF has developed carefully crafted, industry-recognized standards for optimal video performance and has implemented a training program for technicians and installers to use these standards to obtain optimal picture quality from the receiver. Accordingly, Onkyo recommends that setup and calibration be performed by an ISF Certified installation technician.

    HDMI Board Died

Written By Sam of Lebanon, Lebanon, NJ on Tuesday, November 26, 2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really great sound and power. Excellent features and calibration software. However, a year into ownership the HDMI board died. This is a widely reported issue with all recent Onkyo receivers. I had to get it warranty repaired. Luckily the shop is an hour away as shipping a 55 lb unit would not be cheap. The shop replaced the board and got it operational, but scratched the top of the unit. I'm told they are the national repair center so be prepared for similar carelessness in handling your unit.

    Cons: HDMI Board dies

    NO BUENO

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, Crutchfield was fantastic to work with throughout the entire lifecycle of my disappointing purchase! Upon setup (via the Audyssey MultEQ® XT32 eight-point auto setup and room calibration), my receiver would not calibrate any test sounds coming out of the bi-amped configuration I was using. So, I called up Crutchfield and spoke with two separate technicians on multiple occasions (trying to troubleshoot any possible problems). Each technician agreed that the configuration was setup correctly and both were bewildered that the speakers were producing sound through the calibration mode, the unit was recognizing the sound (showing the microphone was operational), but still the unit would not configure these settings. The next step was to contact Onkyo USA, as suggested by Crutchfield. Onkyo USA was not so pleasurable to work with. I spoke with them on multiple occasions, and they really didn't want to solve the problem and were eager to get off the phone. One technician spoke with an engineer and thought it sounded like the problem was with the software. GREAT! I just spent 2 grand on a receiver that has software problems. Within minutes of contacting Crutchfield about this outcome, I was issued an RMA number and the product was returned shortly after. Unfortunately, Crutchfield did not have any more of these receivers in stock, so I could not exchange it for an operational one.

Pros: Delivered quickly Great customer service Ease of return

Cons: I never was able to use this receiver. No more in stock

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Would rate at 4.5 stars if able to, as 5 stars would mean no room for improvement. Excellent out of box easy set up. Has all of the features that I expect for a top flight receiver except 1.

Pros: Easy set up, great features

Cons: Won't stream video, a bit pricy

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver replaced a Sony es-777 that was about 11 years old. The build of this receiver is superb. The weight of this thing matches that of the Sony which to me was a masterpiece for its time. I must say the first one I got was doa with no sound from any channel. Crutch field sent out a replacement immediately and it works flawlessly. The separation in the surround channels is sooooo much better in the 5.1 set I have. Setup was simple with the included mic just amazing! Still figuring things out and looks like this could take awhile as this thing has everything but the kitchen sink. I think the Sony es line quality has diminished as the 5800 does nothing for me and doesn't seem as we'll built as older es components. Can't go wrong with this onkyo at this price though its a steal!

Pros: Construction and ease of setup out of box

    Cons: First one didn't work

WITH THIS TX-NR5009 THX U CAN CHANGE EVERY KNOWN SETTING A AVR CAN HAVE.GOOD OR BAD I DONT KNOW BUT U PUT IN THE TIME AND U GOT YOURSELF A SWEET AMP.IF U DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT SETTINGS PASS IT UP OR GET READY TO GO TO SCHOOL.FOR ME IT IS WORTH THE TIME BECAUSE IT IS A FINE AVR. HEY U CAN NEVER LEARN TO MUCH.

Pros: SOUND THAT IS LIKE MOTHERS MILK. SMOOTH YET WITH THE SETTINGS SET RIGHT U CAN CRANK IT WFO.AS FOR THE VEDIO THAT PASSES THROUGH IT , ONE THAT REALLY WORKS HARD TO UPGRADE THE SIGNAL TO THE LG 47IN TV. DVD,BLUERAY,HD DVD,SAT.IT ALL LOOKS F.I.N.E. EVEN SD DEF,IS UPGRADED TO HIGHDEF.

All in all the unit is very nice and you should be happy with it!

Crutchfield response on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 The problem was brought to our attention months after our 60-day return window had closed, so we could not authorize a refund or an exchange. Onkyo has asked us to refer warranty claims to their own network of authorized service centers.
