Great sound and a home entertainment delivery system

The most important thing the Onkyo TX-NR515 delivers is amazing sound. You get seven channels of low-distortion, high-current power, with advanced digital processing for sound that will bring your favorite films, TV shows, video games, and music to life. This receiver can decode the latest high-resolution surround sound formats, which lend even greater realism to many Blu-ray movies and concerts. Eight 3D-ready HDMI inputs and compatibility with the latest 3D video sources and TVs make this receiver a perfect choice to not only upgrade your system but expand your entertainment choices. And that's when things get really interesting!

More rides in the digital playground

You could start by plugging your iPod® into the front-panel USB port to let the good tunes roll! The receiver bypasses the iPod's digital-to-analog converter in favor of its own high-quality Burr-Brown DAC. And with Onkyo's free remote app download, you can use your iPod touch®, iPhone®, iPad® or Android™ device to control your receiver via Wi-Fi® too.

Of course, thumb drives with lots of music files will also find a home here. What about all the music on your home computers? Built-in DLNA networking makes it simple to connect the 'NR515 to your home network with an Ethernet cable and enjoy convenient access to your digital music. Or if you have a wireless network, you can use Onkyo's Wi-Fi adapter to make the process even easier. A wide variety of optional streaming services includes Sirius/XM®, Pandora®, Rhapsody®, and more. Add to all this built-in Internet radio capability and you've got plenty of listening options to keep your ears happy for a long, long time.

The end of HDMI input roulette

Onkyo's InstaPrevue™ technology shows you a live video thumbnail of the available content on your devices connected via HDMI. You no longer have to remember that your gaming console is connected to Port 3, or your Blu-ray player to Port 1, for example. Just get a bead on the source you want and click.

    Audio Features

7.2ch AV Receiver: The Onkyo TX-NR515 features a 7-channel amplifier rated at 80 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20Hz-20kHz, with 0.7%, driving 2 channels) and two mono subwoofer preamp outputs. The 7-channel amplifier can be configured in three ways.

    • 7.2ch Surround: The Onkyo TX-NR515 provides 7.2ch surround in your main listening area.
    • Front Bi-Amp: The Surround-Back/Front-High speaker terminals can be reassigned and used along with the Front terminals to bi-amp the front speakers, providing improved bass & treble performance. When bi-amping the front speakers the receiver is limited to a 5.2ch speaker system in the main room.
    • Powered Zone 2: The Surround-Back/Front-High speaker terminals can also be reassigned to power a pair of speakers in Zone 2. This configuration restricts the main listening room to 5.2ch surround.

WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): WRAT is based around a low negative-feedback circuit topology that works to reduce signal noise and distortion across the frequency range. A "closed ground-loop circuit" design is employed, in which each circuit has a separate link to the power supply. This helps to cancel individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion. High Instantaneous Current Capability (HICC) enables WRAT amplifiers to immediately cancel the speakers' reflex energy and instantaneously send out the next signal. The same high current better manages speaker impedance fluctuations, which can negatively affect performance.

H.C.P.S. (High Current Power Supply): Under the anti-resonant cover of any Onkyo receiver, you'll instantly notice the High Current Power Supply (H.C.P.S.) transformer. With its huge, isolated power supply design and high-capacity filter capacitors, it delivers the large amounts of power necessary for reproducing the wide dynamics of movie soundtracks and the detail and clarity of your music.

Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry: Optimum Gain Volume Control adjusts the gain so that less than half the amount of attenuation is needed, ensuring the signal never comes close to the noise floor. This protects the signal against noise, resulting in a dramatically clearer sound

Burr-Brown DACs (Digital-to-Analog Converters): This receiver is equipped with 192kHz/24-bit Burr-Brown DACs to decode and playback high-resolution recordings with less jitter and  clearer sound.

32-Bit Processing DSP: The Onkyo TX-NR515 is equipped with a powerful and highly accurate 32-bit processing DSP (Digital Signal Processor) for better surround sound reproduction.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Onkyo TX-NR515 AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Onkyo Original DSP Modes: Onkyo's Original DSP Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. You can choose from the following:

    • Orchestra: For classical or operatic music.
    • Unplugged: For acoustic instruments, vocals, and jazz.
    • Studio-Mix: Suitable for rock or pop.
    • TV Logic: Adds realistic acoustics to TV shows.
    • Game: The receiver offers four different Gaming modes - RPG, Action, Rock, and Sports.
    • All Ch Stereo: Stereo sound from all speakers. Ideal for background music.
    • Full Mono: All speakers output the same sound in mono.
    • Theater-Dimensional (T-D): Theater-Dimensional circuitry takes the complexity out of conventional surround-sound setups and lets you experience the excitement of surround sound from as few as two ordinary speakers. Theater-Dimensional's unique multi-speaker modes let you place up to five speakers conveniently by the TV, for the most realistic virtual-surround sound possible.

Direct Mode: In Direct mode, audio from the input source is output without surround-sound processing. This mode delivers pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration.

Audyssey Technology: The TXN-R515 features a full package of Audyssey audio technologies for optimal sound quality. Audyssey Dynamic Volume offers real-time volume adjustment, while Audyssey DynamicEQ improves your system's surround effects during low volume levels. Audyssey MultEQ XT32 automatically sets speakers to suit your room's listening environment and the speakers' characteristics.

    • Audyssey MultEQ XT32 Automatic Speaker Setup: With the supplied speaker setup microphone, Audyssey MultEQ XT32 determines the number of speakers connected, their optimum crossover frequencies, and their distances from the primary listening position, then adjusts each automatically. The room's acoustical properties are then measured and corrected over the listening area in both the frequency and time domain. There is a threaded insert on the bottom of the microphone so it can be mounted on a tripod for accurate listening position placement. Up to 8 listening position measurements are taken to optimize the surround effect for a broad area. If you prefer you can also setup your speaker system manually.
    • Audyssey Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ solves the problem of deteriorating sound quality as volume is decreased by taking into account human perception and room acoustics. Dynamic EQ selects the best possible frequency response and surround levels moment-by-moment as volume is changed. The result is bass response, tonal balance and surround impression that remain constant despite changes in volume. Audyssey Dynamic EQ combines information from incoming source levels with actual output sound levels in the room, a prerequisite for delivering a loudness correction solution. Audyssey Dynamic EQ works in tandem with Audyssey 2EQ to provide well-balanced sound for every listener at any volume level.
    • Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume looks at the preferred volume setting by t he user and then monitors how the volume of program material is being perceived by listeners in real time to decide whether an adjustment is needed. Whenever necessary, Dynamic Volume makes the necessary rapid or gradual adjustments to maintain the desired playback volume level while optimizing the dynamic range. Audyssey Dynamic EQ is integrated in Dynamic Volume so that as the playback volume is adjusted automatically, the perceived bass response, tonal balance, surround impression, and dialog clarity remain the same whether watching movies, flipping between television channels, or changing from stereo to surround sound content.

Surround Parameters: The Onkyo TX-NR515 lets you tweak and fine tune specific surround sound modes to suit your preference.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust; Panorama: (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect), Dimension (allows you to move the sound field forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
    • Pro Logic IIz Height Gain: The Height Gain Control in Dolby Pro Logic IIz enables the listener to select how much gain is applied to the front high speakers. There are three settings, "Low", "Mid" and "High", and the front high speakers are accentuated in that order. While "Mid" is the default listening setting, the listener may adjust the Height Gain Control to their personal preference.
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Screen Centered Dialogue: By using the front high speakers, this function moves the center image of the dialogue upwards, so that the image of dialogue is fixed to the display height.
    • Listening Angle: While listening in the Theater Dimensional mode you can adjust the listening angle to either Wide (if listening angle is 40°) or Narrow (if listening angle is 20°).

Bass & Treble: You can independently adjust the Bass (50Hz) and Treble (20kHz) of the TX-NR515 from -10 to +10 dB.

CinemaFilter: Using the CinemaFilter you soften overly bright movie soundtracks. Movie soundtracks are typically mixed for a large theater (relative to your home theater) with lots of soft seats and thick curtains on the walls. Home theater settings often lack these high frequency absorbing wall treatments, making the soundtrack sound too bright. CinemaFilter accounts for this and for many movies sounds more natural at home.

Music Optimizer: The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sampling rate below 48kHz and analog input signals.

Late Night Feature: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: Off, Low, and High. This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature will vary based on the individual software package.

Volume Setup: The Onkyo AV receiver provides the following volume settings.

    • IntelliVolume: With IntelliVolume, you can set the input level for each input (+/-12dB) selector individually. This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others. This function does not work in Zone 2.
    • Maximum Volume: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from 30-79 (max), or Off (disabled).
    • Power On Volume: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Last (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Min (0), or 1-78.
    • Headphone Level: With this setting, you can specify the headphone volume (+/-12dB) relative to the main volume. This is useful if there's a volume difference between your speakers and your headphones.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Onkyo AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Assignable Digital Inputs: The Onkyo receiver is equipped with two optical digital inputs and two coaxial digital inputs. All four digital inputs are assignable. You can choose auto decoding , PCM, or DTS for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel, while DTS decodes only DTS formatted sources.
    • Binding-Post Speaker Terminals: There are color-coded binding-post terminals for the following speaker connections; Front, Center, Surround, and Surround Back/Front High. The binding post terminals will accept bare-wire, pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). The Zone 2 speaker outputs use color-coded spring-clip terminals, which will accept bare-wire or pin-connectors.
    • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted. When you connect an iPod or iPhone to the USB port on this receiver, no sound will be output from the headphone jack.

    Video Features

HDMI (v1.4): The TX-NR515 has eight HDMI v1.4 inputs (7 rear/1 front). The front jack is fixed as the Aux input, while the six rear panel jacks are assignable to any of the other inputs. There are two HDMI monitor outputs; both outputs can be active simultaneously and will pass digital audio and video. The HDMI inputs will support uncompressed standard or high definition digital video along with the following audio signals: 2-channel linear PCM, Multichannel linear PCM, and Bitstream. The receiver's HDMI circuitry allows the receiver to output an HDMI audio signal from its speaker outputs, headphone out, and HDMI out so you don't have to run additional analog or digital cables. The HDMI inputs accept 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 4k signals and the analog video inputs (composite/component) are converted to HDMI for transfer to the TV.

Note: The 2 HDMI outputs display the same video signal and can be used simultaneously.

Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K Upscaling: The Onkyo TX-NR515 utilizes a Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K Upscaling and video processing. The Marvel Qdeo Video Chip produces quiet and natural video, free from noise and artifacts. Analog video signals (composite/component) are converted to HDMI and can be scaled to the resolution set in the menu: Through (no scaling), Auto (automatically scaled to the highest resolution supported by the display), 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K.

Front-Panel HDMI (MHL) Port: The front-panel HDMI port is designed for the connection of select mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL standard. Simply plug your MHL compatible smartphone into the receiver's front-panel HDMI port using the HDMI cable that is included with your mobile phone. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images on your HDTV with up to 7.1 channels of surround sound. By programming the A/V receiver's supplied remote control with the appropriate numeric code, you can use it to operate your connected MHL-enabled smartphone. Your connected smartphone is also recharged upon connection, and no separate power supply for the device is necessary while connected to the receiver. The A/V receiver is compatible with Android smartphones from Samsung, HTC, and LG (must support MHL standard); as of 6/7/2012.

3D-Compatible: The TX-NR515's HDMI v.1.4 connections will accept 3D video from your 3D-ready Blu-ray player and output the video signal in 3D to your 3D-ready flat-panel television.

x.v.Color: The AV receiver supports x.v.Color, offering a wider color range than the current broadcast standard. For the x.v.Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Deep Color: The Onkyo receiver also supports Deep Color which allows the color depth of video signals passing through HDMI to be raised. The number of colors that could be expressed by 1 pixel was 24 bits (16,777,216 colors) with a standard HDMI jack. However, the number of colors which can be expressed by 1 pixel is 36 bits with a Deep Color enabled HDMI jack. Since the gradation of the depth of a color can be expressed more finely with more bits, continuous color changes can be more smoothly expressed.  For the Deep Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

HDMI Through: When enabling the HDMI Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "on" or in "standby" both audio and video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver HDMI monitor output. You can select between 3 HDMI Through functions modes.

    • Auto: Detects the signal and automatically selects the input sources.
    • Source: Selects the input source (BD/DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT, Game, PC, Aux, TV/CD, Port) for which the HDMI Through function in enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "standby" mode.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television. The receiver's main HDMI monitor output supports the ARC function, while the sub HDMI monitor output does not.

InstaPrevue: InstaPrevue technology provides a live video thumbnail of the available content on your devices connected to the receiver via HDMI. As a result, you can preview audio/video streams coming from up to 5 HDMI inputs previously assigned to input selectors on your HDMI connected TV. Even with multiple components connected to receiver through HDMI, you can easily switch between inputs as their previews are displayed on a single screen on your television. You can even use the InstaPrevue feature for Picture-in-Picture. You can specify the number of preview thumbnails, as well as their positioning on-screen.

Note: If no video signal are present, the thumbnails will be filled in black. With 3D video signals, the image may not be properly rendered on the preview thumbnails of InstaPrevue.

Auto Lip Sync: The Lip Sync function can automatically synchronize HDMI audio and video that has gotten out of sync due to the complex digital video processing being performed by your HDMI-compatible TV. With HDMI Lip Sync, the audio delay required to synchronize the audio and video is calculated and applied automatically by the AV receiver.

A/V Sync Control: Occasionally, you may need to manually adjust the audio/video signals that are not properly synchronized manually. Typically when using a progressive scanning DVD player. You can correct this by delaying the audio; options are 0 (no delay) to 800 milliseconds, in 10 millisecond steps.

Picture Adjust: Using the Picture Adjust feature, you can adjust the picture quality and reduce any noise appearing on your TV screen.

    • Wide Mode: Auto, Full, Zoom, Wide Zoom, or 4:3.
    • Picture Mode: Custom (Brightness/Contrast/Hue/Saturation/Color Temp), Cinema (for movies), Game (for gaming), Through (changes resolution), Direct (no adjustment).

The DS-A4 supports video output from the iPod video (5th gen), iPod classic (80/120/160GB), iPod nano (3rd/4th/5th gen), iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd/4th gen), and iPhone (2G/3G/3GS/4S).

    Multi-Zone Capability

    Convenience Features

On-Screen GUI (via HDMI): The Onkyo AV receiver offers an on-screen setup menu (GUI) through its HDMI output. The on-screen display offers multiple language text, such as - English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian. If your TV is connected to the composite video or component video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings.

Multi-Zone: In addition to the main listening room, you can also enjoy audio playback from a different source in another room of your home using the receiver's Multi-Zone function (Zone 2). The receiver features Zone 2 line-outputs, as well as Zone 2 speaker terminals.  By using the line-level outputs on the TX-NR515 you can connect an external receiver or integrated amplifier in a second room, allowing you to listen to 7.1 surround in the main room and play a different audio source in another room of your home. The volume of Zone 2 is controlled by your optional integrated amp. By using the speaker-level outputs on the TX-NR515 you can directly connect a secondary pair of speakers in another room of your home, allowing you to listen to 5.1ch surround sound in your main room and play a different audio source in the other room. The volume of Zone 2 is controlled by the TX-NR515 receiver.

    • Compatible Zone Sources: Only Tuner, analog, USB, and Network audio sources can be sent to Zone 2. You cannot select different AM/FM radio stations or listen to USB and Network content in separate Zones at the same time.
    • Incompatible Zone Sources: Optical/coaxial digital and HDMI audio sources are not output to Zone 2. You cannot output any video signal to Zone 2.

Name Edit: You can enter a custom name for each individual input selector and radio preset for easy identification. When entered, the custom name will appear on the display. This function cannot be used for the Network and USB input selectors.

Display Dimmer + Screen Saver: The display brightness has three settings; Dim, Dimmer, and Normal. If there is no video signal on the current input source and no operation for a specific time, a screen saver automatically comes on. You can set the time (3min/5min/10min/off) until the screen saver activates itself. Once active, the screen saver will go off and the screen will return to its previous state if the AV receiver is operated in any way.

Auto & Hybrid Standby: The AV receiver will automatically go into Standby mode, if there is no operation for 30 minutes with no audio/video signal input. The Onkyo TX-NR515 features "Hybrid Standby" mode to save energy and provide greater levels of convenience. Hybrid Standby Mode provides "HDMI through" functionality and maintains a local network connection while the receiver is essentially powered down. This allows the user to watch TV without turning the whole surround system on. Furthermore, when on Hybrid Standby, the home theater may be powered up from "cold" using the Remote Apps for iPod touch/iPhone and Android.

Sleep Timer: From the remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after as much as 90 minutes or as little as 10 minutes; choices are presented in 10 minute increments.

Optional Bluetooth Adapter (sold separately): The Onkyo UBT-1 Bluetooth USB Adapter (580UBT1, sold separately) lets you wirelessly stream music from your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, portable audio player, tablet, laptop, or PC to the Onkyo A/V receiver. The Onkyo UBT-1 is fitted with a male USB (type-A) connector which plugs into the Onkyo receiver's USB (type-A) port. The Onkyo UBT-1 is Bluetooth version 3.0 certified and lets you wirelessly stream music from many Bluetooth-enabled devices supporting A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile). The Onkyo UBT-1 is equipped with apt-X, an audio coding technology that works within Bluetooth to wirelessly deliver CD-quality audio from your Bluetooth-enabled device to the Onkyo A/V receiver.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Onkyo UBT-1.

    Remote Control

Multi-brand Remote: The supplied RC-834M wireless remote is a multi-brand remote. The remote is pre-programmed to operate Onkyo components, as well as other popular brands of equipment, including Blu-ray/DVD players, satellite/cable boxes, televisions, and Apple TV. The IR wireless remote control will operate up to 16' away from the receiver at an angle of 30° left or right of the receiver as long as the remote is within the line of sight of the TX-NR515.

HDMI Control: This function allows CEC-compatible components (Toshiba REGZA-LINK TV/Sharp TV) or RIHD-compatible components connected via HDMI to be controlled with the TX-NR515. The AV receiver offers the following CEC HDMI controls.

      • Intuitive GUI: The Remote App's graphical user interface (GUI) lets you see menus for input source, network source, or radio station, and make your selection accordingly.
      • Menu Control: Selecting the Home Menu feature on your iPod touch/iPhone makes the receiver's main menu page appear overlaid on your home theater display. You can then access a variety of menus that let you adjust settings on the connected Onkyo receiver.

      • Audio/Video Information: Your iPod touch/iPhone offers a variety of useful information when you want to know more about the content playing back through your system. You can quickly check if your audio content is encoded as stereo or multichannel, for example, or whether your video content is in standard or high definition.
    • Remote App for Android: The Onkyo Remote App for Android is available as a free download from the online Android Market. It also lets you seamlessly browse networked content and navigate menus using the touchscreen GUI on your Android phone. Onkyo's Remote App for Android is compatible with Android OS 2.1 or later.
      • Sleek GUI: The Remote App's graphical user interface (GUI) makes it extremely east and intuitive to operate. Use simple menus to choose an input source and one of three different listening modes; including music, movies, or games. It's also easy to make a full range of tone and speaker adjustments.
      • Easy Setup Menu: Selecting the setup menu feature on your Android phone makes the Onkyo AV receiver's main menu page appear overlaid on your home theater display. You can then access a variety of menus that let you adjust settings on the connected Onkyo receiver.
      • Wireless Music Streaming: Operating over a wireless local network, the app allows you to stream music stored on your Android phone to the Onkyo network AV receiver. Music played through the Onkyo receiver gains far greater power and fidelity. Support for WMA and FLAC formats depends on the model of Android phone.

    Replacement receiver- upgrade receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I had to replace my Pioneer when it imploded one day Cruchfield was there to guide me to the next level of home entertainment. My Onkyo-TX-/NR515 has 80 clean watts of power to push my Polk TSI400's concert volume with no distortion, as well as letting me hear the silence between each of George Winston's subtle arrangements. the Onkyo has all the inputs and outputs any home theater could want with two , yes two optical inputs and a dedicated game setting which my Pioneer did not have the Onkyo was simple to set up. Connect it to the internet turn, on the Flat screen and never leave my Laz-e boy again Oh one other thing, it can do its 7.1 magic in a second room ...how cool is that??

Great receiver so far. Replaced a Harman Karon AVR-254 that was becoming more and more problematic. I've now been using this Onkyo for a little over a month and haven't had any problems with it. Setup was simple enough and it's been sounding great.
    Pros:
Standby pass-through is nice when I don't want the surround sound on. Network features are great. Simple setup. More than enough inputs for my needs.
    Cons:
Remote feels cheap, but works well.

I purchased the Onkyo receiver to put in my basement as I had made it into an extra room. It came on the day I was expecting it. I put it in and followed the instructions that came with it and it worked without a hitch. I now watch my sports, listen to music over the internet and the sound is terffic.
    Pros:
Easy setup especially with the automated speaker setup. Great sound quality and hooking up the Blue Ray, Wii and yes an old VCR worked like a charm.

    Pros:
    great sound... easy initial setup
    Cons:
instructions need to be easier to understand... would like to have access to online chat help too..

    Perfect Amp

Written By Uncle gadget, Atlanta, GA on Monday, April 22, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just finished up the installation of this amp as a primary driver for an outdoor sound system for our new pool deck! It has more then enough power to go around and is super easy to set-up. The user interface is excellent and since we are only using it for audit all of the built-in music streaming options are fantastic. No need for a Sonos with all of the options this unit has! The Android app works great. We can be sitting by the pool and I have complete control of the receiver from my deck chair!
    Pros:
Thank you Adam! My Crutchfield adviser. He recommended this receiver and he was dead on the money. Does everything I need it too including provide all the power I need to drive a set of 4 Definitive Technology AW 6500 speakers! The Android app is excellent as well. You'll never get board of the source options that this unit has either.
    Cons:
The only thing close to a con for this unit is that it does take some time for it to download and update the firmware when you first fire it up. But once that is done the set-up is easy and the user interface, whether you are using the app or the on screen menus are easy to navigate.

Love this thing. I must have eleimanted 30 cables I had in my other setup. Real nice sound.
    Pros:
    Great unit
    Cons:
I think I found a slight problem with using the Rouk3 Internet video device. I have it on HDMI 3 game port. After watching a movie, Netfix or Amazon, it will not switch back to HDMI 1 or 2 correctly. Will not detect the TV. I have to power off the unit then back on, then all is well. Do not know if this is game port related or not. But not a show stopeer.

    Just ok

Written By Baeb, Sewell, NJ on Friday, April 12, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver because of the great reviews and needed a 3D receiver for my new TV. It was extremely easy to set up and attach the HDMI cables for my components. That was the best part, however, I find the remote is not friendly as it does not respond to commands that it should. Finally, I thought I would get "amazing" sound from the receiver, but that is not the case. I believe my previous Yamaha was better!!!
    Pros:
    Easy set up
    Cons:
    Unfriendly remote, poor sound

Great receiver for a great price

Written By Nappyaudio, Philadelphia, PA on Monday, April 08, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver has a ton of features for a small price tag. Sure there are much better pieces out there, but you will spend at least double. The android app is definitely one of the big attractions to this piece, giving simple control from anywhere in range of your wifi network.
    Pros:
solid features, good performance, android app
    Cons:
Can't watch video such as cable while listening to audio in same room. I don't think there are very many receivers that can do this, especially in this price range. No apple control app like the android.

Have them paired with Definitive technology CinemaPro 600 speakers. The sound is great and it is fairly simple to set-up and operate. The initial set-up was flawless and all the options work as advertised.
    Pros:
Easy set-up, the apps are nice and work well.
    Cons:
The only issue I had was that the ARC does not work with the apps on my Vizio tv had to run a cable in order to hear that sound through the receiver instead of being able to go through th hi def arc.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very pleased with my choice in the Onkyo TX-NR515 this is my second Onkyo receiver in the past 8 years (seperate locations) and I've been very happy with the ease of operation, the quality of workmanship and the value for the money. This was a breeze to setup and program. I don't believe I could've made a better choice in this price point nor gota more feature packed A/V receiver. The Auddesey self calibrating speaker setup is a great feature as it makes the speakers sound optimal for the room. The remote was easy to program to operate all of my other A/V equiptment, my only complaint is the remote should've been backlite for use at night and that is a true disappointmen, fortunately for me I have a Logitech Harmony remote that is programmable and has a led touch screen. Remote control aside, if you're looking for a user friendly, quality A/V Receiver without breaking the bank than you can't go wrong with TX-NR515.
    Pros:
Sound quality, ease of setup and use, reliability, design, number of HDMI inputs.
    Cons:
    Remote control isn't backlit

I haven't tinkered with all the features, but is working as it should. The unit is for my garage, and is hooked up to a projector via HDMI and outputs just fine. No lag between connections. Speakers I have are older speakers repurposed for garage use, so I can't comment too much on power/sound quality. It is connected via network cable, and had no issues updating firmware via the remote. Also was able to connect to my Spotify account and play my various lists with minimal effort. I like to think of myself as technically savvy, so navigating the panel/remote took little effort for me. Others may stumble along, but if you have patience and time you can review the manual on the provided cd or be smarter and just view it online. Summary: Overall for the price paid, I'm very happy with it's performance so far and meets my expectations of the product

    Top Notch - Onkyo

This is a top of the line, state of the art, electronic device. It has excellent setup instructions, including on-screen display for HDMI connection. The auto speaker calibration is amazing. With included microphone, it detects distance and frequency range of all connected speakers. And I love the remote control, mostly because of its programming capabilities; for my HDTV, HD DVR, and my Blu-ray Disc player! Also, the listening modes are exceptionally useful, for different applications. One cannot go wrong with this model!
    Pros:
Absolute, fantastic function ability! Program-capable remote control, stand-by pass through for HDMI, excellent radio reception, amazing auto speaker calibration technology!
    Cons:
standby pass-through is only capable when power is off. should be cabale on any funciton; radio, usb, internet radio, internet applications

This is a great amp for the price point. I am driving a pair of Polk floor standing RTO-10 speakers. They have 3 6 inch woofers and two tweeters. It will distort when the volume gets up to 60 don't know if its the amp or the speakers but 60 is loud enough that I can only do that when the woman is not home. The app is great. No issues with it. It is simple and I love that I can stream from my phone rather than use the headphone jack. Only complaint is that buttons are not backlit.
    Pros:
Great value, remote app is great!
    Cons:
    Backlight the buttins.

Nice piece of equipment. Connection directions were fine. Easily handles all inputs
    Pros:
Simple clean design. Connections straight forward. Accommodates all inputs needed
    Cons:
Adjusting sound level, base and treble is complicated. Automatic sound leveling system did not work well. Front and center speakers overpowered rear 8" Bose ceiling speakers and adjusting volume individually to L and R rear speakers was not possible

Owners manual is a little too vague on how to set some of the controls. Easy hook up and with the mic doing all of the speaker settings for the room! It is great for a small to medium room and for the money, it's hard to beat the value. I have only had it for a couple of weeks and I just wish the display would show the different sources, etc... I have to keep a flashlight nearby to see which button to push.

The sound quality is better than the price I paid for this unit. Separation is much better than a Sony that cost a bit more than this one. Bass is stronger, though not as tight as higher-cost Yamaha unit I have. The sheer number and variety of inputs is fantastic! The on-screen programming is quite intuitive. And the auto-tune setup actually does a much better job than the comparable Sony. One thing I would point out, is that it is a bit lacking in Aux Outputs. It has this Zone 2 thing. And you can either output as Speaker signal, or instead output line out. I use the line out, but I do wish I had another line out besides this one.Just as well, I worked around that. The other surprise was that it only puts into Line Out whatever it gets input in Analog. So the DVD and such, that I have connected with HDMI? Well, those don't get piped to Line out since they are not Analog. The one pleasant surprise is that the singal I pass in thru front USB via bluetooth does get piped to line out, so that fit my wishes just fine.
    Pros:
    read the review.

I replaced my '09 Onkyo, which is virtually the same as this one, except for the WIFI, so I was familiar with the features and operation. I did have difficulty with the firmware update. Crutchfield passed me over to Onkyo tech support, and they were very helpful. Other than that, the setup was very easy. The powered zone 2 was a big thing with me. There is no other receiver available with that feature at this price, which was my main reason for buying it. Sounds great. Would highly recommend!!!
    Pros:
Lot of receiver for the money. Easy set up.
    Cons:
Firmware update a bit of a pain. No other complaints!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have owned Onkyo receivers for over 25 years and for the most part they just keep getting better. I was looking for a upgrade on my 5.1 Onkyo receiver and chose this one so I could run a full 5.1 while running other music in the second zone. I only gave this unit a four star because of issues I am having with the USB port. May have to call tech support on this one, read cons below.
    Pros:
Works fairly well right out of the box. Did away with several component cables do to the HDMI jacks. On screen setup was very acceptable but could use a little more info for someone that is not up to date on all the terminology.
    Cons:
Problem with the front USB port. Haven't figured it out as of yet but three times I have tried to plug a thumb drive into the front and it turns off the all sound coming through the HDMI cabling, surround sound goes completely away but the video is still OK. After trying for 5 hours to get the sound back I finally found the paragraph that said before you call us do a factory rest. That did the trick, sound came back but all the setup was gone. Still having issues with this.

I am awaiting another unit via RMA because the one initially delivered passed an incredible amount of noise and pixelation through to the HDMI output when upconverting from Composite and Component video sources. I will update the review when I receive the new unit, and hope the problem was as simple as a bad unit. Also, there was no way to update the firmware on the unit I received, either via Ethernet or via USB, which I found very odd. When I went to the "Home" menu then to "Update Firmware" the only thing this receiver did was display the current firmware version (which was out of date). There was no way to proceed further to update the firmware, somewhat frustrating because most of the bad reviews for this receiver were tied to the old firmware.

    Do Not Purchase Onkyo TX-NR515

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although on the surface this receiver seems packed with great features and was highly recommended by Crutchfield, it is plagued with audio/video connectivity and firmware update issues. If you search Onkyo's user forum, you will readily find many user complaints with these issues that have occurred throughout 2012 to the present. In fact, Onkyo's response on the forum has been that they continue to try to resolve the issue rather than another firmware update to actually resolve the problems. One item curious to note was their comment that this unit's HDMI connection cannot be over 10 feet without a seperate booster installed. After hours of frustrating truoble-shooting, I am returning my unit to Crutchfield.
    Pros:
    Lots of great features

    It doesn't perform!

Unit sounds great, looks great and I think it might even have a lot of great features. All I have to do is spend about the next month trying to figure out the out-dated manual. There were changes made to the many menus when the last firmware update came out in Oct. 2012. However the manual is dated for March 2012.So I am having a difficult time setting up properly. Can't see the TV while setting up cd player.

The wi-fi dongle that I got for free kind of sucks. Unit is placed about 10 ft from wap and only 1 flight upstairs, yet I only get 54% signal. Even my droid gets 5 bars at the same distance. So now I will have to run a cat5e cable for more consistency.

Setting up the unit for streaming music is no picnic either. Very difficult to follow the instructions in my outdated, yet only source, manual. Oh, I could always call Onkyo (wait time about one hour) Tech support to help. But they are very good once you get thru.
    Pros:
Very pretty to look at. Great price.
    Cons:
Difficult set up, outdated manual, bad wi-fi reception and long waits for Onkyo Techs.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking to upgrade my 9 year old receiver with something that offered HDMI integration with my newer audio / video equipment. Was also specifically looking for something that allowed me to run 2 different "zones" - so that I could run a set of outside speakers independent of what I was playing inside. This Onkyo receiver provided both of my requirements - and much, much more. In fact, I'm not sure I will ever use all the features here - but what I really like is how they've completely thought through having an HDMI TV, HDMI cable box, and HDMI DVD / BlueRay player. The Onkyo is smart enough to play the audio portion of my TV via my home audio system, or, simply passively though my TV's internal speakers (which I need to do sometimes). I would highly recommend this solution for anyone looking for a mid-range system. To be honest, I'm not sure why you'd want to spend more on other solutions being that I'm a fairly demanding consumer, and this mid-priced model meets all of my needs. In other worlds, you coudl spend more, but I imagine 95% of home consumers wouldn't need all the features.

    Cons:
The only downside is the simplistic, dot-matrix looking display. Given the advances in technology, the display is very 1980-ish. But to be fair, all receivers look pretty much identical to this. Even more expensive ones look the same. Why manufactures do this instead of larger displays with more lights / features is beyond me.

This is a great unit to fill your room with sound and to get the most out of your HDTV. This was a replacement unit for one that I had that gave up the "ghost". It has given me a good comparison as I used the same speaker set up on both units. This unit is much better in all respects than my previous unit. I am not only satisfied with the unit, but, the support from Crutchfield has been outstanding.
    Pros:
Great features. Great versatility Great sound Setup mike is a neat feature Looks Good

Got this a couple weeks ago to replace an older Denon receiver. Main reason for upgrading was to get the HDMI 1.4 support that I didn't get on the older one. So far it's great, easy to set up, lots of options, great sound from my PS3 and DirecTV receivers. I would highly recommend that anyone buying this use a USB drive to upgrade the Firmware, never seemed to work right doing it over the internet. USB method is also much, much faster. Crutchfield included a free USB Wi-Fi adapter, although I'm hooked up via Ethernet cable, so I can't comment on how the wireless adapter works.
    Pros:
HDMI 1.4 audio, loads of audio options, easy to set up, came with a free USB Wi-Fi adapter, DLNA support, 2 USB ports
    Cons:
Firmware updating over the internet spotty at best, luckily using a USB drive is another option that works well, so no stars off for this. DirecTV doesn't seem to have a code for this receiver, so I can't control the volume from my D* remote, minor annoyance.

This system was a bit more than I was originally looking for but the more I researched it the more convinced I became to buy it. Set up after allowing the system to download the latest software was relatively simple. Do plan on it taking a while to down load and get all of your components up and running...it will be worth the wait !!
    Pros:
The onboard net radio options are a big selling point for me as well as the wireless feature with the dongle, one less wire to fuss with. The quality of video played though the system is noticably better - yet another great feature I had not planned on. I was also very excited to finally have a system that allows for a second set of speakers to be playing in another room, listening to something different that the main room that the unit is located in.
    Cons:
Start up time when the system is turned on is a bit long, particularly if you are waiting for the net radio to aquire and address, only a minor con though. I do have to say as I am begining to age, the buttons on the remote require me to put on my reading glasses - or hold it far, far away - hahaha

I also had problems with the main video out with the Onkyo NR515 receiver. At first it was OK by just giggling the HDMI wires, but finally nothing worked. Onkyo's tech told me just to plug it into the video sub out, but I felt everything should work 100%. After the third time I lost video, I contacted Crutchfield. They were very accommodating in scheduling a return and ordering another unit since i was in the 60 day window. I wanted to switch to the Sony STR-DN1030, but they were out of stock with no listed date. I decided to go with a replacement Onkyo (definition of insanity?) They assured me that if I order another Onkyo and I have trouble, the guarantee clock starts with the new unit. Cudo's to Crutchfield, ????? to Onkyo for not addressing the problem.

    It's OK....

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, I cannot complain because for the money this component does it's job....but it is limited in terms of music input. Inputs I have: blu-ray, pc, hd cable box, and xbox. The sound for each of these components is great...TV and Theater are awesome. The receiver does have built-in apps for digital music---which is also great but you cannot adjust the sound levels for these built-in features as you would for an actual input device. If you needed to add a CD player for instance you could adjust the sound volumes but there are no dedicated input slots for such devices (low bass output). If your TV supports ARC you are good and have some added flexibility but if not and your TV has built in apps you will need the TV\CD input for those apps. I'm not convinced I want to add a CD player or Digital music player because @ 80 watts is it really worth it for such a small space---that's also way too many components for a media room. So overall my family room will have to be the all in all...media room and theater room and I will definitely go with a higher end component that does have input limitations now that I know what to look for. My advice---think your equipment through before buying and is this works go for it---you won't be disappointed, just don't get a high end sub woofer.
    Pros:
Features and Great Movie content Theater Sound
    Cons:
Component Inputs; isn't really designed for CD or digital music device owners unless your TV supports ARC.

    Video issues with this receiver

Written By robertf67, Cincinnati, OH on Tuesday, May 15, 2012

Be very careful when buying this unit. I researched AVRs for about 3 weeks and fianlly settled on the TX-NR515 because it had a unpowered Zone 2 option, 4K upscaling, DLNA ceritified and 8 HDMI inputs not to mention a sub HDMI out. Everything worked great for 2 whole days and then I turned it on my TV with the unit in pass-thru mode and no picture or sound on TV. I turned on the TX-NR-515 and I had audio but no video - the only solution at the time is to unplug the unit and plug back in. See the Onkyo Product Support site for monitor-out issues. I tried to work with them but they were very unresponsive so I did the only thing I could I returned it and bought a Pioneer. This issue was happening on a lot of units not just mine.
    Pros:
Lots of connectivity - easy to use - good user interface
    Cons:
intermitent video/audio problems - no airplay option

    Great receiver, great price

Written By john, Arizona on Thursday, May 03, 2012

This receiver replaced my 12-year old Onkyo TX-DS777, which was still working fine. I was looking for the convenience of HDMI video switching, and was also curious to see how technology has advanced in more than a decade. One reason I chose this brand and model is because I like to play music on the patio, and it has a second set of speaker outputs (2-channel, called Zone 2). Inside, I have a 5.1 speaker system.

Setup was fairly easy, due in large part because my speaker wires had banana plugs and were clearly labeled. For some reason, the Zone 2 terminals do not accept banana plugs, so I had to remove the plugs and insert the stripped wire. I connected my components (A PC, a DVD player, and a Comcast cable box) via HDMI cables, and ran another cable to the Sony TV. Everything worked great -- except Zone 2.

So I had to revert to the manual. Eventually, I found a sentence that indicates Zone 2 works only with analog inputs. What? My old Onkyo could play anything in Zone 2. It just downgrade the source to 2-channels. So after a frustrating hour or two, I added an analog output from the PC, made the adjustment in Windows, and set the source in the receiver. It works, but it's a huge step backward compared to my old receiver.

The Audyssey Room Correction thing seemed to work just fine -- but I'm not sure I couldn't have got equally good results myself using a SPL meter.

Overall, I'm very happy with this and the price is right ($380, shipped).
    Pros:
Easy setup, great sound, excellent price
    Cons:
Zone 2 is limited to analog sources, some of the language in the onscreen display is awkward and confusing

Great options at a great price

Written By A Martinez, Central, PA on Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Bought this to replace a very old JVC receiver in my living room with 2 zones (1 inside, 1 outside). I had bought a Yamaha RX-V1065 last year and wished it had network connectivity. I paid half for this receiver and got more options than the Yamaha. Sound quality is good and handles multiple inputs and senses whenever you turn on a device and kicks on (which is good and bad). I don't like that you have to turn on the receiver and switch to the input and turn it back off to get it to "pass through", but I guess it's a minor inconvenience. All in all I would say it is a great "bang for your buck" with the loaded features and ability to control the receiver with my iPhone (can even change stations in Pandora from the phone). I would recommend this to other people.
    Pros:
Easy to set up, tons of features
    Cons:
Have to turn on receiver and switch to input for HDMI passthrough.
