    Audio Features

7.2ch AV Receiver: The Onkyo TX-NR616 features a 7-channel amplifier rated at 100 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20Hz-20kHz, with 0.08%, driving 2 channels) and two mono subwoofer preamp outputs. The 7-channel amplifier can be configured in three ways.

    • 7.2ch Surround: The Onkyo TX-NR616 provides 7.2ch surround in your main listening area.
    • Front Bi-Amp: The Surround-Back/Front-High speaker terminals can be reassigned and used along with the Front terminals to bi-amp the front speakers, providing improved bass & treble performance. When bi-amping the front speakers the receiver is limited to a 5.2ch speaker system in the main room.
    • Powered Zone 2: The Surround-Back/Front-High speaker terminals can also be reassigned to power a pair of speakers in Zone 2. This configuration restricts the main listening room to 5.2ch surround.

WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): WRAT is based around a low negative-feedback circuit topology that works to reduce signal noise and distortion across the frequency range. A "closed ground-loop circuit" design is employed, in which each circuit has a separate link to the power supply. This helps to cancel individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion. High Instantaneous Current Capability (HICC) enables WRAT amplifiers to immediately cancel the speakers' reflex energy and instantaneously send out the next signal. The same high current better manages speaker impedance fluctuations, which can negatively affect performance.

3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry: 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry is a core Onkyo technology incorporating a low-NFB (negative feedback) design that makes the sound more natural.

H.C.P.S. (High Current Power Supply): Under the anti-resonant cover of any Onkyo receiver, you'll instantly notice the High Current Power Supply (H.C.P.S.) transformer. With its huge, isolated power supply design and high-capacity filter capacitors, it delivers the large amounts of power necessary for reproducing the wide dynamics of movie soundtracks and the detail and clarity of your music.

Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry: Optimum Gain Volume Control adjusts the gain so that less than half the amount of attenuation is needed, ensuring the signal never comes close to the noise floor. This protects the signal against noise, resulting in a dramatically clearer sound

Burr-Brown DACs (Digital-to-Analog Converters): This receiver is equipped with 192kHz/24-bit Burr-Brown DACs to decode and playback high-resolution recordings with less jitter and  clearer sound.

32-Bit Processing DSP: The Onkyo TX-NR616 is equipped with a powerful and highly accurate 32-bit processing DSP (Digital Signal Processor) for better surround sound reproduction.

Listening Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of listening modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your audio and video software. You can assign a default listening mode to each input source so that listening mode will be selected automatically when you select the corresponding input source. The following audio formats are supported by the receiver's Listening Mode - Mono, Stereo, 5.1-channel, and 7.1-channel.

    and the selected listening mode.
    Stereo/Mono Modes
Stereo Sound is output by the front left and right speakers and subwoofer.
Mono Use this mode when watching an old movie with a mono soundtrack.
    Direct Modes
Direct In this mode, audio from the input source is output without surround-sound processing. This mode delivers pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration.
    Dolby Pro Logic
Dolby Pro Logic II Dolby Pro Logic II transforms high-quality stereo sound into 5.1-channel surround sound. Thanks to its full-range performance, you will hear all the detail and subtleties of a compelling five-channel Dolby surround sound mix from a stereo signal. You can select between PLII Movie, Music, and Game modes.
Dolby Pro Logic IIx Dolby Pro Logic IIx transforms high-quality stereo and 5.1ch sound into 6.1- or 7.1-cchannel surround sound. With Dolby Pro Logic IIx you experience engaging, natural surround sound. Special effects are more realistic than you ever thought possible. Your movies and television programming sound richer, with more depth. You can select between PLIIx Movie, Music, and Game modes.
Dolby Pro Logic IIz Providing a dramatic listening alternative for 7.1 systems, Dolby Pro Logic IIz brings the added dimension of height to create an immersive 7.1-channel surround sound experience from any stereo, 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 movie, music, TV, or game audio source. Dolby Pro Logic IIz identifies and processes ambient sound energy and directs this information to front height speakers in a 7.1-channel environment.
    Dolby Digital
Dolby Digital Dolby Digital has been selected as the default format for DVD video, standard 2 channel audio playback and HDTV Digital broadcasting. Dolby Digital features two independent surround channels giving same full range as the three front channels. Plus it adds a Low Frequency Effect channel LFE. Dolby Digital accomplishes this by using a technique called compression.
Dolby EX Dolby Digital EX takes the Dolby Digital 5.1-channel setup one step further with an additional center surround channel (reproduced through one or two speakers) for extra dimensional detail and an enveloping surround sound effect.
Dolby Digital Plus Dolby Digital Plus is based on core Dolby Digital technologies. Dolby Digital Plus is an advanced surround sound audio codec designed specifically for evolving media. Dolby Digital Plus brings cinematic sound to Blu-ray, broadcast, online, game, and mobile phone entertainment (up to 7.1ch)
Dolby Digital TrueHD Dolby TrueHD produces audio that is identical to and every bit as spectacular as the master recording. It lets you experience the full potential of Blu-ray Disc (up to 7.1ch), and is even ready for future HD delivery formats.
    DTS
DTS DTS (Digital Theater Systems) uses the same concept as Dolby Digital, but implements a lower compression rate. This leads to more dynamic range, improved channel separation, and more subtle nuances.
DTS-HD High Resolution Audio DTS-HD Audio delivers sound quality that matches the clear and vivid images of high-definition video. Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs deliver five times the video resolution of standard DVD and produce images with stunning realism. But that's only half of the story. You need incredible sound to complete the high definition experience and DTS-HD Audio provides the highest quality multi-channel (7.1ch) sound possible. Movies come alive with sound as lifelike as the picture, and music becomes as real as a live performance.
    Master Audio
DTS-ES (Discrete/Matrix) DTS-ES (Discrete/Matrix) delivers 6.1 channels of discrete or matrixed audio. Movies encoded in DTS-ES will dramatically intensify the DTS surround effect with the addition of a surround center-channel speaker.
DTS 96/24 DTS 96/24 offers a higher quality level of multi-channel audio (up to 5.1 channels) for standard DVDs. The "96" refers to a 96kHz sampling rate (compared to the typical 48kHz sampling rate.) The "24" refers to 24-bit depth, compared to 16-bit depth used for CD sound, which means there is more audio information present.
DTS Express DTS uses a system called DTS Express to deliver Secondary or Sub Audio to your player. The DTS Express audio is mixed with the Primary Audio, giving you an intensely great interactive surround experience.
DTS Neo: 6 DTS Neo:6 takes 2-channel (stereo) audio and completely transforms it into up to six full-bandwidth matrix channels of surround sound. Your home theater system will produce six and five separate channels, respectively, to match your speaker layout. DTS Neo:6 can also generate a center surround channel from 5.1 material.
    THX Certified
    THX

Founded by George Lucas, THX develops stringent standards that ensure movies are reproduced in movie theaters and home theaters just as the director intended. THX Modes (Cinema, Music, or Game) carefully optimize the tonal and spatial characteristics of the soundtrack for reproduction in the home-theater environment. They can be used with various multichannel sources. Surround back speaker output depends on the source material

    THX Select2 Plus

This mode expands 5.1-channel sources for 7.1- channel playback. It does this by analyzing the composition of the surround source, optimizing the ambient and directional sounds to produce the surround back channel output. You can choose between Cinema, Music, or Game mode.

    THX Surround EX

This mode expands 5.1-channel sources for 6.1/7.1- channel playback. It's especially suited to Dolby Digital EX sources. THX Surround EX, also known as Dolby Digital Surround EX, is a joint development between Dolby Laboratories and THX Ltd.

    Audyssey Surround
    Audyssey DSX

Audyssey DSX lets you augment a standard 7.1-channel surround set-up with two "front-high" and two "front-wide" channels. These extra speakers expand the height and width of the soundstage and help to produce a more realistic and immersive listening experience. These channels carry non-directional audio that add a new vertical and horizontal dimension to your movies and games. The soundstage of Audyssey DSX can be adjusted between -3dB to +3dB.

    Onkyo Original DSP Modes

Unplugged For acoustic instruments, vocals, and jazz.
Studio-Mix Suitable for rock or pop.
TV Logic Adds realistic acoustics to TV shows.
Game The receiver offers four different Gaming modes - RPG, Action, Rock, and Sports.
All Channel Stereo Stereo sound from all speakers. Ideal for background music.
Full Mono All speakers output the same sound in mono.
Theater Dimensional Theater-Dimensional circuitry takes the complexity out of conventional surround-sound setups and lets you experience the excitement of surround sound from as few as two ordinary speakers. Theater-Dimensional's unique multi-speaker modes let you place up to five speakers conveniently by the TV, for the most realistic virtual-surround sound possible.
    Other Listening Modes
DSD Audio signals are stored as single-bit values at a high-frequency sampling rate of 2.8224 MHz, while noise shaping and oversampling are used to reduce distortion - providing a better audio quality with a dynamic range of up to 128 db.
Multichannel This mode is used with PCM multichannel sources.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Surround Parameters: The Onkyo TX-NR616 lets you tweak and fine tune specific surround sound modes to suit your preference.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust; Panorama: (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect), Dimension (allows you to move the sound field forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
    • Pro Logic IIz Height Gain: The Height Gain Control in Dolby Pro Logic IIz enables the listener to select how much gain is applied to the front high speakers. There are three settings, "Low", "Mid" and "High", and the front high speakers are accentuated in that order. While "Mid" is the default listening setting, the listener may adjust the Height Gain Control to their personal preference
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Listening Angle: While listening in the Theater Dimensional mode you can adjust the listening angle to either Wide (if listening angle is 40°) or Narrow (if listening angle is 20°).
    • THX Loudness Plus: THX Loudness Plus is a volume control technology featured in THX Select2 Plus certified receivers. With THX Loudness Plus, home theater audiences can experience the rich details in a surround mix at any volume level. THX Loudness Plus compensates for the tonal and spatial shifts that occur when the volume is reduced by intelligently adjusting ambient surround channel levels and frequency response. The THX Loudness Plus feature can be applied when listening in any THX listening mode.

Audyssey 2EQ Automatic Speaker Setup: With the supplied speaker setup microphone, Audyssey 2EQ can measure the number of speakers connected, their sizes, crossover frequencies and distances front he listening position and calculate the optimal speaker setting for you automatically. The supplied microphone includes an attached 19.5' cable that plugs into the Setup Mic input on front of the receiver. There is a threaded insert on the bottom of the microphone so it can be mounted on a tripod for accurate listening position placement. Three listening position measurements are taken, one primary and two secondary, to optimize the surround effect for a broad area. You can also setup your speaker system manually using the receiver.

    • Subwoofer: Yes or No for subwoofer connection.
    • Crossover: Set the crossover point for each set of speakers (front, center, surround, surround back/front high) and the subwoofer individually. The speaker crossovers can bet set to full bandwidth, 40 Hz, 50 Hz, 60 Hz, 70 Hz, 80 Hz (THX standard), 90 Hz, 100 Hz, 120 Hz, 150 Hz, or 200 Hz. The subwoofer crossover can be set to bypass, 80, 90, 100, or 120Hz.
    • Equalizer Settings: With the Equalizer settings, you can adjust the tone of the speakers and subwoofer individually with a 5-band EQ. You can adjust each frequency band (63, 250, 1000, 4000, and 16000Hz) for each speaker from -6dB to +6dB. You can also adjust each frequency band (25, 40, 63, 100, and 160Hz) for the subwoofer from -6 dB to +6 dB.
    • Speaker Distance: The distance from the listening position to each speaker can be set from six inches to 30 feet in six inch increments.
    • Speaker Levels: The output level of each speaker is adjustable +/-12dB; -15dB to +12dB for the subwoofer.

Audyssey Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ solves the problem of deteriorating sound quality as volume is decreased by taking into account human perception and room acoustics. Dynamic EQ selects the best possible frequency response and surround levels moment-by-moment as volume is changed. The result is bass response, tonal balance and surround impression that remain constant despite changes in volume. Audyssey Dynamic EQ combines information from incoming source levels with actual output sound levels in the room, a prerequisite for delivering a loudness correction solution. Audyssey Dynamic EQ works in tandem with Audyssey 2EQ to provide well-balanced sound for every listener at any volume level.

Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume looks at the preferred volume setting by t he user and then monitors how the volume of program material is being perceived by listeners in real time to decide whether an adjustment is needed. Whenever necessary, Dynamic Volume makes the necessary rapid or gradual adjustments to maintain the desired playback volume level while optimizing the dynamic range. Audyssey Dynamic EQ is integrated in Dynamic Volume so that as the playback volume is adjusted automatically, the perceived bass response, tonal balance, surround impression, and dialog clarity remain the same whether watching movies, flipping between television channels, or changing from stereo to surround sound content.

Dialog Normalization: Dialog Normalization (DialogNorm) is a feature of Dolby Digital, which is used to keep the programs at the same average listening level so the user does not have to change the volume control between Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby TrueHD programs.

Bass & Treble: You can independently adjust the Bass (50Hz) and Treble (20kHz) of the TX-NR616 from -10 to +10 dB.

CinemaFilter: Using the CinemaFilter you soften overly bright movie soundtracks. Movie soundtracks are typically mixed for a large theater (relative to your home theater) with lots of soft seats and thick curtains on the walls. Home theater settings often lack these high frequency absorbing wall treatments, making the soundtrack sound too bright. CinemaFilter accounts for this and for many movies sounds more natural at home.

Music Optimizer: The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sampling rate below 48kHz and analog input signals.

Re-EQ: With the Re-EQ function, you can compensate for harsh high-frequency content, making it more suitable for listening.

Late Night Feature: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: Off, Low, and High.

Note: This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature will vary based on the individual software package.

Volume Setup: The Onkyo AV receiver provides the following volume settings.

    • IntelliVolume: With IntelliVolume, you can set the input level for each input (+/-12dB) selector individually. This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others. This function does not work in Zone 2.
    • Maximum Volume: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from 30-79 (max), or Off (disabled).
    • Power On Volume: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Last (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Min (0), or 1-78.
    • Headphone Level: With this setting, you can specify the headphone volume (+/-12dB) relative to the main volume. This is useful if there's a volume difference between your speakers and your headphones.

Assignable Digital Inputs: The Onkyo receiver is equipped with two optical digital inputs and two coaxial digital inputs. All four digital inputs are assignable. You can choose auto decoding , PCM, or DTS for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel, while DTS decodes only DTS formatted sources.

Binding-Post Speaker Terminals: There are color-coded binding-post terminals for the following speaker connections; Front, Center, Surround, and Surround Back/Front High. The binding post terminals will accept bare-wire, pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). The Zone 2 speaker outputs use color-coded spring-clip terminals, which will accept bare-wire or pin-connectors.

Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted. When you connect an iPod or iPhone to the USB port on this receiver, no sound will be output from the headphone jack.

AM/FM Tuner: With the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. You can store your favorite stations as presets for quick selection. You can store a combination of up to 40 of your favorite FM/AM radio stations as presets.

    Video Features

HDMI (v1.4): The TX-NR616 has eight HDMI v1.4 inputs (7 rear/1 front). The front jack is fixed as the Aux input, while the six rear panel jacks are assignable to any of the other inputs. There are two HDMI monitor outputs; both outputs can be active simultaneously and will pass digital audio and video. The HDMI inputs will support uncompressed standard or high definition digital video along with the following audio signals: 2-channel linear PCM, Multichannel linear PCM, and Bitstream. The receiver's HDMI circuitry allows the receiver to output an HDMI audio signal from its speaker outputs, headphone out, and HDMI out so you don't have to run additional analog or digital cables. The HDMI inputs accept 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 4k signals and the analog video inputs (composite/component) are converted to HDMI for transfer to the TV.

Note: The 2 HDMI outputs display the same video signal and can be used simultaneously.

Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K Upscaling: The Onkyo TX-NR616 utilizes a Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K Upscaling and video processing. The Marvel Qdeo Video Chip produces quiet and natural video, free from noise and artifacts. Analog video signals (composite/component) are converted to HDMI and can be scaled to the resolution set in the menu: Through (no scaling), Auto (automatically scaled to the highest resolution supported by the display), 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K.

Front-Panel HDMI (MHL) Port: The front-panel HDMI port is designed for the connection of select mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL standard. Simply plug your MHL compatible smartphone into the receiver's front-panel HDMI port using the HDMI cable that is included with your mobile phone. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images on your HDTV with up to 7.1 channels of surround sound. By programming the A/V receiver's supplied remote control with the appropriate numeric code, you can use it to operate your connected MHL-enabled smartphone. Your connected smartphone is also recharged upon connection, and no separate power supply for the device is necessary while connected to the receiver. The A/V receiver is compatible with Android smartphones from Samsung, HTC, and LG (must support MHL standard); as of 6/7/2012.

3D-Compatible: The TX-NR616's HDMI v.1.4 connections will accept 3D video from your 3D-ready Blu-ray player and output the video signal in 3D to your 3D-ready flat-panel television.

x.v.Color: The AV receiver supports x.v.Color, offering a wider color range than the current broadcast standard. For the x.v.Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Deep Color: The Onkyo receiver also supports Deep Color which allows the color depth of video signals passing through HDMI to be raised. The number of colors that could be expressed by 1 pixel was 24 bits (16,777,216 colors) with a standard HDMI jack. However, the number of colors which can be expressed by 1 pixel is 36 bits with a Deep Color enabled HDMI jack. Since the gradation of the depth of a color can be expressed more finely with more bits, continuous color changes can be more smoothly expressed.  For the Deep Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Note: x.v. Color and Deep Color technology are supported only when source product, HDMI cable, media and HDTV all support those features.

HDMI Through: When enabling the HDMI Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "on" or in "standby" both audio and video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver HDMI monitor output. You can select between 3 HDMI Through functions modes.

    • Auto: Detects the signal and automatically selects the input sources.
    • Source: Selects the input source (BD/DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT, Game, PC, Aux, TV/CD, Port) for which the HDMI Through function in enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "standby" mode.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television. The receiver's main HDMI monitor output supports the ARC function, while the sub HDMI monitor output does not.

InstaPrevue: InstaPrevue technology provides a live video thumbnail of the available content on your devices connected to the receiver via HDMI. As a result, you can preview audio/video streams coming from up to 5 HDMI inputs previously assigned to input selectors on your HDMI connected TV. Even with multiple components connected to receiver through HDMI, you can easily switch between inputs as their previews are displayed on a single screen on your television. You can even use the InstaPrevue feature for Picture-in-Picture. You can specify the number of preview thumbnails, as well as their positioning on-screen.

Note: If no video signal are present, the thumbnails will be filled in black. With 3D video signals, the image may not be properly rendered on the preview thumbnails of InstaPrevue.

Auto Lip Sync: The Lip Sync function can automatically synchronize HDMI audio and video that has gotten out of sync due to the complex digital video processing being performed by your HDMI-compatible TV. With HDMI Lip Sync, the audio delay required to synchronize the audio and video is calculated and applied automatically by the AV receiver.

A/V Sync Control: Occasionally, you may need to manually adjust the audio/video signals that are not properly synchronized manually. Typically when using a progressive scanning DVD player. You can correct this by delaying the audio; options are 0 (no delay) to 800 milliseconds, in 10 millisecond steps.

Picture Adjust: Using the Picture Adjust feature, you can adjust the picture quality and reduce any noise appearing on your TV screen.

    • Wide Mode: Auto, Full, Zoom, Wide Zoom, or 4:3.
    • Picture Mode: Custom (Brightness/Contrast/Hue/Saturation/Color Temp), Cinema (for movies), Game (for gaming), Through (changes resolution), Direct (no adjustment).
    • Picture Settings: Film Mode (video or film), Edge Enhancement (sharpens image), Noise Reduction (reduce noise).

    Multi-Zone Capability

Multi-Zone: The TX-NR616 offers three Zones; a multi-channel audio/video system in your main listening room (Main Zone), a stereo audio only system in a second room (Zone 2), and another stereo audio only system in a third room (Zone 3).

Zone 2: Zone 2 allows playback of a separate analog source in 2-channel stereo in an additional room of your home. Zone 2 features line-level outputs and speaker outputs. This way, Zone 2 can be powered by a separate amplifier (keeping 7.1ch playback in your main room) or by the TX-NR616's built-in amplifier (limiting the main room to 5.1ch). The volume of Zone 2 can be controlled by the TX-NR616's remote or your separate amp's remote. When powering Zone 2 with the receiver's built-in amplifier, listening modes that require front high/wide or surround back speakers are unavailable. You cannot power Zone 2 with the receiver's built-in amplifier, if you are bi-amping your front speakers.

Zone 3: Zone 3 allows playback of a separate analog source in 2-channel stereo in a third room of your home. Zone 3 consists of two pre-outs (no speaker outputs). By using the Zone 3's line-level outputs, you can connect an external amplifier in a third room, allowing you to continue to listen to 7.1ch surround in the main room and play a different audio source in another room of your home. The volume of Zone 3 is controlled by your optional integrated amp.

Compatible Zone Sources: Only Tuner, analog, USB, and Network audio sources can be sent to Zone 2 or Zone 3. You must currently be listening to a USB device or Network audio source in the Main Zone to initially select USB or Network as a source in Zone 2 or Zone 3. Then you can switch the Main Zone to any source you desire.

Note: You cannot select different AM/FM radio stations or listen to USB and Network content in separate Zones at the same time.

Incompatible Zone Sources: Optical/coaxial digital and HDMI audio sources are not output to Zone 2 or 3. You cannot output any video signal to Zone 2 or 3.

Whole House Mode: The Whole House Mode is useful when you want to simply add extra background music to your home party. This mode allows you to enjoy the same stereo music as the main room in separate rooms (Zone 2/3). The Whole House Mode selects the same input source for Zone 2/3 as the main room. During the Whole House Mode, stereo playback is automatically selected for all zones. The Main Zone & Zone 2/3 will play at the same volume level.

    Convenience Features

On-Screen GUI (via HDMI): The Onkyo AV receiver offers an on-screen setup menu (GUI) through its HDMI output. The on-screen display offers multiple language text, such as - English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian. If your TV is connected to the composite video or component video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings.

Name Edit: You can enter a custom name for each individual input selector and radio preset for easy identification. When entered, the custom name will appear on the display. This function cannot be used for the Network and USB input selectors.

Display Dimmer: The display brightness has three settings; Dim, Dimmer, and Normal.

Screen Saver: If there is no video signal on the current input source and no operation for a specific time, a screen saver automatically comes on. You can set the time (3min/5min/10min/off) until the screen saver activates itself. Once active, the screen saver will go off and the screen will return to its previous state if the AV receiver is operated in any way.

Sleep Timer: From the remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after as much as 90 minutes or as little as 10 minutes; choices are presented in 10 minute increments.

Auto Standby: The AV receiver will automatically go into Standby mode, if there is no operation for 30 minutes with no audio/video signal input.

Hybrid Standby: The Onkyo TX-NR616 features "Hybrid Standby" mode to save energy and provide greater levels of convenience. Hybrid Standby Mode provides "HDMI through" functionality and maintains a local network connection while the receiver is essentially powered down. This allows the user to watch TV without turning the whole surround system on. Furthermore, when on Hybrid Standby, the home theater may be powered up from "cold" using the Remote Apps for iPod touch/iPhone and Android.

Optional Bluetooth Adapter (sold separately): The Onkyo UBT-1 Bluetooth USB Adapter (580UBT1, sold separately) lets you wirelessly stream music from your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, portable audio player, tablet, laptop, or PC to the Onkyo A/V receiver. The Onkyo UBT-1 is fitted with a male USB (type-A) connector which plugs into the Onkyo receiver's USB (type-A) port. I did a lot of research when looking for a new receiver and decided to move away from Yamaha to the Onkyo TX-NR616. I have to say I couldn't be happier. The online features have integrated seamlessly into my Home Theatre system and the sound is incredible. I have since upgraded my entire speaker set to make use of the features and quality of this receiver.
    Pros:
Many HDMI inputs, 3D out, online features
    Cons:
    None that I've found.

    ONKYO TX-NR616

Written By Michael_Vocalist, Salt Lake City, UT on Monday, December 24, 2012

Amazing sound reproduction! Easy to use remote control and features! This is the coolest Onkyo I have owned, 8 HDMI in and 2 HDMI out, WI-FI and USB port right on the front panel for easy use. Displays the content of my ipod on the TV screen, this is a huge improvement from my previous model. I am using the TX-NR616 in a 7.1 set-up with Polk Audio speakers and a Velodyne Sub and it sounds amazing. The internet access is easy to use for streaming music and the firmware updates are a piece of cake. 5 Stars!
    Pros:
My home theater sounds like I am at an I-Max theater!
    Cons:
I have not figured out how to adjust my sub of center volume from the remote, may need access the disc manual.

It took some time to set up due to the multiple software downloads. But it works well with our Directv. Sounds great and does have a second zone.
    Pros:
    Great value and sound.
    Cons:
I have to reset the subwoofer level each time I turn it on. Using the second zone is a little tricky. You really can not hear much until the sound level is above 50. None of this is a real problem to me but it could be improved.

Great value receiver with plenty of inputs

Written By IndyRob, Indianapolis, IN on Monday, December 17, 2012

I purchased this receiver as part of a 3D upgrade that I was making to get my home theater 3D compatible. I needed something with a lot of HDMI 1.4 swithcing capability and this receiver fit the bill. The Audyssey audio equalization is also a big plus if you are trying to tune a 7.1 surround system.
    Pros:
Very flexible, decent power, nice design, internet radio capability
    Cons:
Non intuitive setup, no written user manual. Receiver randomly "rebooted" on me once during a football game... hopefully no more of that!

After purchasing this receiver, and waiting on to be delivered, and began to read the customer reviews, I became worried about all the firmware updates, and problems people saying they were having with the receiver. This is were I relied on the Crutchfield Tech Spport. Each time I called they were patient and helpful. They resolved all my problems, and now I am really enjoying my receiver. Techs should be commended.
    Pros:
    Living up to my expectations
    Cons:
    none

This Onkyo is the best receiver I have owned. I have had many Sony receivers and they just don't stand up to this one! For the price of the Sony products they should be THX certified but are NOT!

Have had NO issues....just operator errors during learning curve.
    Pros:
Dual HDMI outputs, multi zones, wifi remote via android!
    Cons:
    Still looking!

It works well. Much to learn after having relied on a Yamaha RX595 for 17 years. Can't understand why they don't offer easier control and use of zones. Not sure anyone else will ever figure out how to run our multiple zones (3 - the main in TV room, speakers in a sun room and speakers in our eating/entertainment room.... Had to install a speaker switch and can't adjust the bass, etc. at the other zones....are we going backwards here or am I just backwards?) Not easy to read the labels on the switches...forces use of the remote. Guess I'm being retrained again. With the recommended center speaker , then auto adjusting the speakers to the room, it has made a significant improvement in hearing dialog in movies viewed.
    Pros:
Got good advice to make the correct purchase for my application. Good sound once set up. Excellent tech support from Crutchfield. No waiting and great patience. Good advice.
    Cons:
    None really

I have been on a learning curve with this unit since I purchased it about 3 weeks ago. It has so much to offer and has taken time to master each of its great features. I have it hooked up to an LG 47inch led lcd 3D flatscreen and an LG 3d DVD player with Bose 5.1 speakers (with a non powered sub) and everything works great.I have the wifi plug for the unit and use it with no problems. I would recommend this unit to anyone.

    I got a lemon

Written By Jamie, Ames, ia on Sunday, October 28, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this machine as it fit my requirements for two hdmi outputs and three room/zone capability. I have had good experience with Onkyo products in the past, however this particular receiver had some sort of glitch in the firm ware update, as I was unable to perform the update either over the net or by direct USB. This update was needed as both my hdmi outputs would not work appropriately. Crutchfield tech support was excellent, and they even put me in contact with onkyo tech support, but unfortunately we all came to the same conclusion that I got a lemon, so I am sending it back. I think not every machine will have the problem I had, but I think you roll the dice a bit by purchasing this machine....even the onkyo tech told me that the nr616 in general is a 'problem child,' so keep that in mind.
    Pros:
two hdmi outs, multi room functionality, price
    Cons:
bad user interface, non intuitive interface, inability to get firmware update

I went from a TX-8522 that I've had for years with no problems to the TX-NR616, along with a BD-SP809 Blu-Ray Disc Player The TX-NR616 is a great choice for anyone with a modest budget that wants a home theater entertainment system that delivers clean sound with ample power, is easy to operate and set up. I will add a Bose speaker system to it for surround sound. The staff at Crutchfield were incredible, the system arrived exactly when they said it would, and their Technical Support Staff are knowledgeable group.
    Pros:
Easy to use, clean sound, a good quality product.

Mixed results so far, but promising

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It was down to Onkyo vs. Denon for a replacement Home Theater receiver, replacing a Sony STB-840. So the whole network-HDMI switching-app thing was new for my home theater. Set up seemed to go pretty well, the onscreen guide helps a lot. Some things are hidden in odd spots, and I'm learning of some of the idiosyncrasies of this unit. A long-term problem seems to be that if you're not in active-standby, which is required if you want to pass HDMI signals through the system so you can watch TV without powering up the receiver, you can't turn the unit on with the remote. This seems to be a well documented issue, perhaps a future firmware update will fix it. Speaking of firmware; I've had the unit for about a week, and in the last few days hooked it up to my network. It recommended the update, so I did it. It reset all factory settings, so I had to go back and re-do some settings. It also did prod me for another update, but this one didn't reset everything. It appears you have to update more than once if your unit is that far out of date. I used the network method (vs. USB) no problems.

So, the good stuff; after setting up the sound using the microphone, I REALLY like the sound this thing puts out. I've watched Thor way to many times in the last week, just to hear the effects and explosions! The Onkyo remote 2 app is a little buggy, but seems to be working better now. When it does work, it's very responsive, and I'm thinking of setting up another zone.
    Pros:
One of the few receivers with multiple HDMI outputs (2) in this price range. Great sound, lots of power. Lots of features; IOS device remote apps, streaming music services.
    Cons:
Remote can't turn on receiver from full off mode (could be fixed with firmware update) Setup menu items sometimes hard to find. Some people have reported HDMI output failures after updating firmware (as of June 2012)

Complicated and Unfriendly - The first and last Onkyo I'll Ever Buy

Written By Dennis Gall, Barrington Illinois on Tuesday, July 03, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

An impossible piece of equipment to operate. Firmware update instructions are counterintuitive - the scroll through memus are difficult to get the hang up. The operating manual is worthless. The Onkyo Remote2 iPhone App is ridicuously impossible to understand how to operate. After my 1 hour long firmware update, it appears that the receiver erased the update after shut down, as it keeps on re-prompting me that i need to perform the update again.

All in all, this is by far the worst piece of AV equipment I've ever purchased.

I'd give this a "negative 5" rating if they had one.

    Usual excellent Onkyo product

Written By Scott, Southern California on Sunday, July 01, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my third Onkyo receiver. I don't remember the model number of the first - that was 10 years ago. About 5 years ago I replaced it with the TX-SR702. That one was replaced by the TX-NR616. I did it because I plan to buy a 3D television and my old 702 was still using component connections, rather than HDMI. It also made my life more convenient, since I have a BluRay, HTPC, PS3 and Verizon FiOS HD DVR connected. I had to change inputs on both the 702 receiver and my television to see all of it. I expected no change in sound, and no change in picture quality on my current 720p Samsung 50" plasma. I'm pleased to say Onkyo didn't deliver on my expectations.

After going through the full EQ setup, the sound is significantly better, through the same old speakers. I expect that when I get the new speakers, it'll be a whole new level of sound. The picture on my 50" Samsung 720p plasma television is also significantly improved. It has better color, more fine detail, and the pass-through HDMI feature is great for late night watching (when the sound might keep others in the house awake). I guess I didn't realize what I was missing all these years, staying with my old system. I also love the ability to connect to my PC and browse and play music without switching to the PC connection.
    Pros:
Excellent sound Excellent picture HDMI pass-through Simple setup DLNA lets me browse and play music from my HTPC easily Remote control program for tablets
    Cons:
DLNA doesn't let me play videos, just music Writing the firmware updates takes a lo-o-o-o-o-ong time. Hopefully there won't be too many of them. The user manual is only available via computer. I printed it out, but what about those people who can't?

    Onkyo TX-NR616

Written By Ralph, Annapolis, MD on Sunday, June 17, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my third Onkyo receiver. Each one gets better. Good price for a good product. The sound is great. THX Select! Crisp and clear. I love the auto room adjustments done with the supplied microphone. As with all newer electronics, though, they get more complex and so many bells and whistles that I will probably not use such as all the online features. Us older folks like simplicity. I'm sure the younger buyers will love it. They are so technology oriented.
    Pros:
Outstanding sound quality! THX Select. Price.
    Cons:
Not really a con but too many features I will never use. I miss the days of On, Off, Volume Up and Volume Down. Of course, I also miss the days before cell phones.
