Take your home theater above and beyond with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X™

A technology that just made its debut in home theater receivers last year, Dolby Atmos creates the most lifelike, captivating surround sound of any audio format we've heard to date. If you're watching a plane take off onscreen, your ears will follow it down the runway along with your eyes, and as it flies overhead you might swear your hair is blowing back as it roars directly above you. The TX-NR646 supports a 5.1.2 Atmos setup. If you're ready to explore this new dimension in home theater sound, you'll just need to add a pair of in-ceiling speakers to your five-channel system, or pick up a pair of Atmos enabled upward-firing speakers to project sound off your ceiling and create the height effects that make an Atmos system so riveting.

Onkyo will release a firmware update in the summer of 2016 that will give this receiver DTS:X surround sound, an upcoming format which will use object-based processing similar to Dolby Atmos and overhead speakers for immersive home theater.

Endless music streaming options

The TX-NR646's built-in Wi-Fi lets you access the music you have stored on your networked computer, plus you can take advantage of free Internet radio and other subscription-based Internet radio services like Spotify®, Pandora®, and SiriusXM® Internet radio. All of these options can be controlled with the Onkyo Remote app on your phone. Bluetooth lets you stream any music you listen to on your phone or tablet directly to the receiver for playback through your home speakers, and Apple AirPlay lets you send music wirelessly from a compatible Apple device or from any computer with iTunes®.

High-res audio

Great sound is key

Audio performance is at the heart of the TX-NR646's design. Onkyo's Wide Range Amplifier technology gives you smooth sound with minimal distortion for thrilling movie sound effects. Phase-matching Bass Enhancement lets you enjoy deep, thunderous low frequency effects while vocals and dialogue remain clear. Music aficionados will appreciate decoding for high-resolution DSD and FLAC files, along with other high-res formats. Onkyo's Music Optimizer helps improve the sound of compressed audio files and Bluetooth streams so you can hear your music the way it was meant to be heard. A premium 32-bit/384kHz (no, that's not a typo — color us impressed) digital-to-analog converter uses an exclusive low-distortion filtering technology to deliver crystal-clear reproduction of music and TV and movie soundtracks.

Enjoy your music in a second room

Ever wish you had a dedicated music listening room? It isn't hard to set one up with the TX-NR646's dual-zone audio capabilities. Powered Zone 2 outputs let you connect a pair of speakers for stereo sound in another room. You can also connect a stereo receiver through the line-level Zone 2 connection and use the 'NR646 as a preamp. Whole House Mode lets you play the same song in all zones, or you can listen to a different song in each room. Use the Onkyo Remote app to control audio content in different zones from anywhere in the house.

7 Channel Amplifier: The Onkyo TX-NR646 AV receiver features a 7-channel amplifier rated at 100 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20Hz-20kHz, with 0.08%, driving 2 channels). The AV receiver's amplifier employs WRAT, H.C.P.S, PLL Jitter-Cleaning Circuitry, and Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry for dynamic, detailed, clear sound.

    • WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): WRAT is based around a low negative-feedback circuit topology that works to reduce signal noise and distortion across the frequency range. A "closed ground-loop circuit" design is employed, in which each circuit has a separate link to the power supply. This helps to cancel individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion. High Instantaneous Current Capability (HICC) enables WRAT amplifiers to immediately cancel the speakers' reflex energy and instantaneously send out the next signal. The same high current better manages speaker impedance fluctuations, which can negatively affect performance.
    • H.C.P.S. (High Current Power Supply): Under the anti-resonant cover of any Onkyo receiver, you'll instantly notice the High Current Power Supply (H.C.P.S.) transformer. With its huge, isolated power supply design and high-capacity filter capacitors, it delivers the large amounts of power necessary for reproducing the wide dynamics of movie soundtracks and the detail and clarity of your music.
    • Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry: Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry adjusts the gain so that less than half the amount of attenuation is needed, ensuring the signal never comes close to the noise floor. This protects the signal against noise, resulting in a dramatically clearer sound.
    • PLL Jitter-Cleaning Circuit Technology: PLL (Phase Locked Loop) jitter-cleaning circuit technology reduces jitter by comparing the input and output phases of the digital signal and creating an accurate clock waveform. This enhances the precision of digital signal processing and noticeably improves audio quality. Jitter-cleaning technology works both for digital signals input via HDMI and for digital signals converted from analog signals inside the receiver itself

Amplifier Assignment: The 7-channel amplifier can be configured in a variety of ways to match your type of speaker setup.

    • Normal (7.1ch): The Onkyo TX-NR646 provides 7.1ch surround in your main listening area. You can choose either Surround Back or Front Height speakers (but not both).
    • Front Bi-Amp (5.1ch): The Surround-Back/Front-High speaker terminals can be reassigned and used along with the Front terminals to bi-amp the front speakers, providing improved bass & treble performance. When bi-amping the front speakers the receiver is limited to a 5.1ch speaker system in the main room (no Surround Back or Front Height speakers)
    • Powered Zone 2 (7.1ch + Zone 2): In this configuration, you can connect Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back (or Front Height), and Zone 2 speakers to the AV receiver. When Zone 2 is off, all seven channels will be used in the Main Zone. However, when Zone 2 is on, power to the two surround back (or front height) channels will be directed to the two speakers in Zone 2 and the Main Zone will receive only five channels of power.
    • Dolby Atmos (5.1.2ch): The Surround-Back/Front-High speaker terminals are assigned to power a pair of overhead ceiling speakers or a pair of Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers to create 5.1.2ch Dolby Atmos surround sound. Zone 2 speaker can still be powered by the receiver in the configuration. When Zone 2 is off, all seven channels will be used in the Main Zone for Dolby Atmos. However, when Zone 2 is on, power to the Dolby Atmos channels will be directed to the two speakers in Zone 2 and the Main Zone will receive only five channels of power without Dolby Atmos.

384 kHz/32-bit Hi-Grade DAC: A premium-quality AK4458 digital-to-analog converter from Asahi Kasei implements unique low-distortion filtering technologies for clear sound, and unlocks the full potential of any audio format, including compressed, lossless, and hi-res audio (MP3, WMA, WMA Lossless, FLAC, WAV, OggVorbis, AAC, Apple Lossless, DSD 5.6 MHz, LPCM, and Dolby TrueHD).

Dual 32-Bit DSP: The Onkyo AV receiver employs powerful and highly accurate Dual 32-bit processing DSP's (Digital Signal Processor) for better surround sound reproduction.

AccuEQ Room Calibration: Calibrating the sound to suit your room's acoustics is simple with Onkyo's AccuEQ auto-room calibration. Once you've connected your speakers, plug-in the included mic and wait a few moments as the TX-NR646 measures things such as speaker distance, type, crossover, and output, taking into account any reflections from your walls and floor. The system is designed specifically to by-pass your front left and right speakers. The system then optimizes the frequency response of the remaining speakers so you can enjoy balanced surround sound regardless of room shape or furnishing while retaining the characteristics of your front left and right speakers for optimum enjoyment

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Onkyo TX-NR646 AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Immersive Surround Sound: The Onkyo TX-NR646 AV receiver goes beyond regular surround with the latest immersive surround sound formats - like Dolby Atmos, Dolby Surround, and DTS:X.

    • Dolby Atmos: The TX-NR646 receiver is Dolby Atmos (5.1.2ch) compatible. Dolby Atmos combines traditional home theater speaker layouts with either ceiling-mounted speakers or new Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers to create a plane of sound above the listener. The impact of either in-ceiling or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers is breathtaking. Your room fills with realistic, multidimensional sound that places you directly in the center of the entertainment experience.
    • Dolby Surround: Dolby Surround offers an enhanced cinema experience to your Dolby Digital (Plus/TrueHD) and DTS (ES/HD) movie soundtracks using your existing 7.1ch or Dolby Atmos speaker setup. Dolby Surround enhances audio definition by improving the spatial dimension and overall audio definition of movie soundtracks. It does this by using four distinct surround zones that provide greater control over the exact placement of each detail in a movie sound track, so audio can be matched more accurately to the video on screen; this means more depth and greater realism for your movies. As a result, individual sounds are clearer and more distinct. It also improves the surround sound experience across the entire theater by widening the listening "sweet spot".
    • DTS:X (Future Firmware Update): DTS:X will be enabled through an online firmware update later this year. DTS:X is the next generation object-based, multi-dimensional audio technology from DTS. Unbound from channels, DTS:X conveys the fluid movement of sound to create an incredibly rich, realistic and immersive soundscape - in front of, behind, beside and above the audience - more accurately than ever before. DTS:X offers the ability to automatically adapt the audio to the speaker layout that best fits your space.
    • DTS:X Neural (Future Firmware Update):  DTS:X Neural will also require the same future firmware upgrade as DTS:X. Further, DTS:X incorporates Neural:X, the latest spatial remapping technology from DTS, which provides a fully immersive output for all types of source content; this includes DTS bitstreams and non-encoded (PCM) data. Neural:X delivers a thrilling sense of immersive sound to your speaker layout regardless of the original source format. Click here for more information about DTS:X & DTS:X Neural.

Onkyo Original DSP Modes: Onkyo's Original DSP Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. You can choose from the following:

    • Orchestra: For classical or operatic music.
    • Unplugged: For acoustic instruments, vocals, and jazz.
    • Studio-Mix: Suitable for rock or pop.
    • TV Logic: Adds realistic acoustics to TV shows.
    • Game: The receiver offers four different Gaming modes - RPG, Action, Rock, and Sports.
    • All Ch Stereo: Stereo sound from all speakers. Ideal for background music.
    • Full Mono: All speakers output the same sound in mono.
    • Theater-Dimensional (T-D): Theater-Dimensional circuitry takes the complexity out of conventional surround-sound setups and lets you experience the excitement of surround sound from as few as two ordinary speakers. Theater-Dimensional's unique multi-speaker modes let you place up to five speakers conveniently by the TV, for the most realistic virtual-surround sound possible.

Direct Mode: In Direct mode, audio from the input source is output without surround-sound processing. This mode delivers pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration.

Surround Parameters: The Onkyo TX-NR646 lets you tweak and fine tune specific surround sound modes to suit your preference.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust; Panorama: (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect), Dimension (allows you to move the sound field forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Center Spread: Adjusts the width of the soundfield of the front channels when playing in the Dolby Surround listening mode.
    • Listening Angle: While listening in the Theater Dimensional mode you can adjust the listening angle to either Wide (if listening angle is 40°) or Narrow (if listening angle is 20°).

Audio Enhancements: The Onkyo TX-NR646 receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

    • CinemaFilter: Using the CinemaFilter you soften overly bright movie soundtracks. Movie soundtracks are typically mixed for a large theater (relative to your home theater) with lots of soft seats and thick curtains on the walls. Home theater settings often lack these high frequency absorbing wall treatments, making the soundtrack sound too bright. CinemaFilter accounts for this and for many movies sounds more natural at home.
    • Music Optimizer: The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sampling rate below 48kHz, analog input signals, and Bluetooth audio.
    • Late Night Feature: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: Off, Low, and High. This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature will vary based on the individual software package.

Bass Management: The Onkyo AV receiver offers Tone Control and Phase Matching Bass technology to get the most bass impact out of your system.

    • Tone Controls: You can independently adjust the Bass (50Hz) and Treble (20kHz) of the TX-NR646 from -10 to +10 dB.
    • Phase Matching Bass: Onkyo's Phase-Matching Bass optimizes low frequencies while preserving mid-range clarity. This means that powerful bass plays back with clear vocals; it doesn't overpower them.
    • Double Bass: You can also activate the Double Bass function in order to boost bass output even more by feeding bass sounds to the front left/right speakers, center-channel, and powered subwoofer.

Volume Setup: The Onkyo AV receiver provides the following volume settings.

    • IntelliVolume: With IntelliVolume, you can set the input level for each input (+/-12dB) selector individually. This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others. This function does not work in Zone 2.
    • Maximum Volume: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from 30-79 (max), or Off (disabled).
    • Power On Volume: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Last (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Min (0), or 1-79.
    • Headphone Level: With this setting, you can specify the headphone volume (+/-12dB) relative to the main volume. This is useful if there's a volume difference between your speakers and your headphones.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Onkyo AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Digital Inputs: The Onkyo receiver is equipped with two optical digital inputs and one coaxial digital input. All three digital inputs are assignable. You can choose auto decoding , PCM, or DTS for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel, while DTS decodes only DTS formatted sources.
    • Phono Input: The Onkyo AV receiver is fitted with a Phono input and ground terminal for connection of a turntable (MM).
    • Binding-Post Speaker Terminals: There are binding-post terminals for all speaker connections - Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back/Front Height, and Zone 2. The binding post terminals will accept bare-wire, pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). Use 6- to 16-ohm speakers.
    • Dual Subwoofer Outputs: The receiver is fitted with two subwoofer outputs to connect dual powered subs for extra bass. The dual outputs share the same input signal and are not discrete.
    • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.
    Video Features

HDMI 2.0a: The TX-NR646 has eight HDMI 2.0a inputs (7 rear/1 front) and two HDMI 2.0a outputs for connecting Blu-ray/DVD players, Satellite/Cable boxes, Game Consoles, and other video components to your TV. The dual HDMI outputs can simultaneously output the same audio/video signal to two TVs (video is output at the resolution supported by both TVs). The HDMI jacks can accept and switch 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K video signals to a HDTV. All HDMI jacks will also support uncompressed standard or high definition digital video along with the following audio signals; 2-channel linear PCM, Multichannel linear PCM (up to 7.1ch), and Bitstream (Dolby Digital/DTS, etc.). Additional HDMI features include -

    • 4K (60Hz)/HDCP 2.2/4:4:4: The receiver's HDMI jacks supports the latest HDMI 2.0a specifications, plus HDCP 2.2 compatibility for the latest formats and technologies planned for Hollywood content (HDCP 2.2 is only supported onl HDMI 1/2/3 inputs and both HDMI outputs). HDMI 2.0a offers a significant increase in bandwidth (up to 18Gbps) to support new features such as 4K@50/60 (2160p), which is 4x the clarity of 1080p/60 video resolution, and 4:4:4 color space for uncompressed color real-life color.
    • HDR (High Dynamic Range): This Onkyo AV receiver also enables transmission of High Dynamic Range (HDR) formats, and provides enhanced picture quality by simultaneously enabling greater detail for both the dark and bright parts of an image.
    • 3D-Ready: All HDMI jacks will accept 3D video from your 3D-ready Blu-ray player and output the video signal in 3D to your 3D-ready flat-panel television.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): The receiver's main HDMI output features ARC (Audio Return Channel). This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television. The sub HDMI monitor output does not support this feature.
    • Auto Lip-Sync: The Lip-Sync function can automatically synchronize HDMI audio and video (for any HDMI jack) that has gotten out of sync due to the complex digital video processing being performed by your HDMI-compatible TV. With HDMI Lip-Sync, the audio delay required to synchronize the audio and video is calculated and applied automatically by the AV receiver. You can also manually correct the audio delay from 0 (no delay) to 400 milliseconds; in 10 millisecond steps.

Video Conversion: Analog composite and component video signals (480i only) input to the receiver will be converted to HDMI signals and then output to your receiver via HDMI. The resolution remains the same and is not upscaled.

HDMI Through: When enabling the HDMI Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "on" or in "standby" both audio and video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver HDMI monitor output. You can select between 3 HDMI Through functions modes.

The simple on-screen display combines text and graphics that make setup and other operations extremely easy. The initial setup assistant takes you step-by-step through speaker configuration, source connection, remote programming, and network connection.

Note: Initial setup requires that the receiver be connected to your TV via HDMI for display of the on-screen menu. Many of the receiver's setup functions can only be found via the on-screen menu and not the front-panel display.

Zone 2: In addition to the main listening room, you can also enjoy audio playback from a different source in another room of your home using the receiver's Zone 2. The receiver features Zone 2 line-outputs, as well as Zone 2 speaker terminals. By using the speaker-level outputs on the TX-NR646, you can directly connect a secondary pair of speakers in another room of your home, allowing you to listen to 5.1ch surround sound in your main room and play a different audio source in the other room. When listening to AM/FM radio, you cannot select different stations for the main room and Zone 2.

Gapless Playback: Many live and classical albums have no gaps in the music. Gapless playback ensures that there are no pauses between audio files. This provides playback with no interruptions, the way it was meant to be heard. Compatible with WAV, FLAC, and ALAC music files via USB or DLNA.

You will also be able to control basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip) using the receiver's remote control. Advanced music operation will still need to be handled from your Bluetooth-enable device. There is no song/artist information display on the receiver or connected TV. Continue to use your Bluetooth device's screen to view song/artist info.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Onkyo receiver.

Onkyo Remote App (for Apple iOS & Android): The Onkyo Remote App (from Apple's App Store & Google Play) allows you to operate the Onkyo AV receiver from your Apple iOS (4.3+) or Android (2.1+) device, using your home's wireless network. In addition to the receiver, the remote can be programmed using the receiver's on-screen menu to control popular brands of TVs, Blu-ray players, DVD players/recorders, DVRs, VCRs, etc.

    • The AV receiver will enter Standby mode when the power of the TV is turned to Standby.
    • You can set on the menu screen of the TV to either output the audio from the speakers connected to the AV receiver, or from the speakers of the TV.

Can the amplifier support two 320 Watts speakers?
    cam2496  Aug 30, 2016
    1 answer
    A
The Onkyo can power up to seven conventional 8 Ohm home speakers with up to 100 watts each, yes. While a speaker may be "rated" to handle more wattage, the Onkyo should be more than enough power for any consumer-grade application. I hope that helps. Q
I recently bought four speakers and a sub-woofer; the Polk TSx220 and Polk PSW125 respectively. Are these speakers and sub compatible with this receiver?
    jim  Jul 29, 2016
    1 answer
    A
Absolutely. There's nothing proprietary about the Polk speakers. The bookshelf models are the conventional 8 Ohm impedance and the receiver offers the dedicated subwoofer RCA pre-out for providing bass frequencies to the powered subwoofer. I hope that helps. Q
Does this receiver have a default sound volume for input modes?
    kit  Jul 13, 2016
    1 answer
    A
Yes: The Onkyo AV receiver provides the following volume settings. IntelliVolume: With IntelliVolume, you can set the input level for each input (+/-12dB) selector individually. This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others. This function does not work in Zone 2. Maximum Volume: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from 30-79 (max), or Off (disabled). Power On Volume: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Last (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Min (0), or 1-79. Headphone Level: With this setting, you can specify the headphone volume (+/-12dB) relative to the main volume. This is useful if there's a volume difference between your speakers and your headphones. You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the receiver's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table. I hope that helps! I saw some reviews on Amazon and elsewhere indicating that Zone 2 speakers can be used for analog sources only, but other Q&As here indicate that they can be used with some digital sources (e.g., pandora/wifi). I need to be able to listen to spotify over four speakers- will this receiver allow me to?

My personal trial and error experience is that your first statement is correct i.e. Zone 2 analog sources only. However there is a work around if you can extract an analog from a digital source and input that to the receiver. Steaming devices and cable boxes for example often have analog outs in addition to HDMIs that will not work with the receiver

I need a receiver that can be installed in a cabinet. This receiver does not appear to have a power plug in for a fan as my current on does. Has anyone had heat issues?
    amyfooz  Jun 26, 2016

    A
Hi, Amyfooz, I have the TX-NR646 installed in a passively vented cabinet similar to "http://www.crutchfield.com/p_571HW4024W/Havenwood-HWHWS4024.html?tp=3219". It's on its own shelf with about 2" clearance above the unit. It's noticeably warm when running, but not so warm that you can't comfortably leave your hand on top of the hottest part of the unit, so I'm not concerned about overheating. My satellite receiver box (?!) generates about the same amount of heat. I hope that helps with your decision.

It depends on how much space there is around the unit in the stand. I would avoid it if possible, unles u have at least a couple of inches on top, sides and more in back.

I can't say I've had that problem re: the receiver getting hot -- but I don't have it in an enclosed space (i.e., so there's plenty of air around it). Not sure what to tell you re: putting it inside a TV stand. Sorry.

Heat kills, plus you will generate more heat watching "Independence Day" than you would watching "The Remains of The Day." Put your AVR on the lowest shelf, with at least 4" of clearance above it, and hook up a quiet computer fan to help ventilate the enclosure. Leave any cabinet doors open, and if possible remove the back of your TV stand for more air movement through the cabinet.

I'm looking to connect this to my Amazon Echo Dot. With my current setup I have bluetooth dongle, but the echo is constantly auto connecting and if the receiver is off or on another channel the echo is inaudible. For my use case I would only like the receiver's bluetooth to be on/active when the receiver is on that mode. Can anyone shed some light on how the bluetooth channel works and how devices connect? Even better would be if Amazon allow users to turn off auto-connect, but that does not look promising at the moment.

we have 4k tv, Roku, Bose speakers, outdoor speakers, Blu ray, and blue tooth needs. Can this receiver power all? I was advised the Bose system had its own amplifier and could be played through a receiver...

Not sure about the 4K tv, but the system will handle blue tooth, blue ray, and nicely controls two sets of speakers. You can control the volume of two zones and even have one zone run the tv or whatever and zone two can run the phono, receiver cd, blue tooth, ( like of your iPhone.) Very versatile.

Can this receiver output to both HDMI outputs simultaneously? That is, can I drive two TVs at the same time with the same input material? WIth the second set of L+R right audio, it seems like I should be able to drive a second TV and two more speakers while the 5.1 part of the system is in use with the first TV.

I want to get this receiver but unfortunately can only fit a 3.1 setup in my living room. Would I lose sound FX from the rear and side surround channels when watching a 5.1 or 7.1 movie or is there a way to route the surround FX to the front Left and front Right speakers? Are there any receivers that would let you do this? Sorry, coming from a stereo setup and not sure what these receivers can do! Thanks!

You should have no trouble, Onkyo has a TD setting is for your 3 speaker setup. You can find this info on page 17 in the advanced manual, it's the last description on that page. I think you can download it from the Crutchfield NR646 page. There are other settings that you may like.

You will lose the sound fx if you only have three speakers. You can only get the effect with 5-7 speakers. You can always get a sound bar instead and they are made to sound like surround sound and most have a sub woofer

I'm not sure about the details of a 3.1 vs a 5.1 or 7.1 or how that relates to the number of speakers for surround sound and location. What I can share is that I have 2 floor speakers connected only to the front and the sound is like a movie theater and awesome. I don't have other speakers on the sides of my room or rear but if you have room for that I'm sure it would be even better. Good luck Also I think a Crutchfield takes returns up to 60 days? If you want to replace.

Yes. Obviously, quality depends on your speakers. I really liked how it sounded. I returned it because it did not have multi channel capability. But the sound was very good. ANd the price is great.

The receiver has a built in wifi, but you need to have a home network for which you need a router. Hope this helps

There is no built in wi-fi. You have 2 options: 1. Connect wirelessly to your home wi-fi, or 2. Hard wire directly to your home wi-fi router.

I am not totally sure what you're asking. You need a router in your house to create the Wi-Fi signal. If you already have Wi-Fi signal, the receiver will pick it up without any additional components. So I already had Wi-Fi in my house and once I had the receiver installed, I could connect right to the Wi-Fi.

This Onkyo will hook up with your existing router using prompts that you get on screen when you hook up your television with the Onkyo.

Does this TX-NR646 still require firmware update or does it come with the update now since we are past 2015?

Last firmware update dated 9/30/2015. You can set the receiver to auto update in settings.

We had to install the firmware update after we purchased the unit. It does not take long so the update should not be an issue. We purchased the unt right after the first of the yaer (2016). It has worked like a charm. Good luck with your purchase.

There is a firmware update on their site. I'm not familiar enough yet with my recently purchased 646 to fix it back if a problem develops. The precautions were overwhelming for a rookie operator. lol

I'm not sure about a 2016 specific firmware update, nor have I needed to address that issue. However, once connected to the internet it has a pretty robust system menu. There may be an update function in there, but I've never needed to look. I bought mine about 3-4 months ago and everything has been working fine - once I got it set up and connected, it's been trouble free. I've been very happy with the purchase thus far.

I have a 5.1 set up in my main room but I bi-amp my front speakers. I also have 2 speakers in a second room that I use. I understand that this receiver only has 7 channels, but when I turn on zone 2, am I able to keep my bi-amp front speakers fully powered and lose my back speakers instead?

Hi Matt, The answer is "No, but yes". When set up as a standard 7.1, non-bi-amp system, (like mine) and you turn on Zone 2, the Onkyo will automatically shunt the back surround/bi-amp to the Zone 2 speaker outputs instead. When you shut off Zone 2 it restores the back surround/bi-amp speakers. All this is automatic. However, I did an experiment for you. I went into the menus and set my speaker outputs to "bi-amp". This started blasting the back surround speakers of my 7.1 set up, as if they were front speakers, so the bi-amp was working correctly. Turning on bi-amp shuts down the Zone 2 speakers entirely. You would have to go into the menus again to turn the speaker outputs on. However, it doesn't effect the Zone 2 RCA line outputs, which still were working fine. I have a virtual "Zone 3" slaved to Zone 2 by connecting the Zone 2 line outputs to an old amp with its speaker wires running to my "Zone 3" speakers. If you have an old amp that would be satisfactory for your Zone 2 speakers, you could have bi-amp 5.1 and Zone 2 dependably (and also independently, if that makes sense). The only inconvenience would be that you would have to also turn on the Zone 2 amp. I hope that helps. By the way, I absolutely love the Onkyo 646. I have a very complicated set up, with about twelve different sources, and I can usually get whatever I want going with a few remote control clicks. My biggest problem is remembering all the possibilities. I hope that helps. Scott Badman

I had a Onkyo 5 series for over 10 years and loved it. Eventually, the sub woofer output failed and then about a year later the entire thing failed and stopped producing any sounds regardless of the source. I was seriously considering upgrading to the new 646 but have heard MANY reports of the units basically ceasing to work after as little as an hour of operation and a nightmare getting answers or solutions from Onkyo support. Should I be wary of purchasing the 646? Have they started using cheaper / lower quality electronic components?

All I can say is that I haven't had any troubles. In deciding what receiver to buy, I did notice a (seeming) underlying thread: it's easy to short out the speakers, particularly if you're using banana clips to plug in. That may be part of what's going on. If so, I wouldn't call that cheap components, but maybe not 'optimal' design? My experience has been basically flawless. Much more so than with the Samsung SUHD TV I have my Onkyo hooked to.

I can;t speak to what components are being used, but I have had the receiver for 6 months and have had no problems with it. Works beautifully.

Yes it can. While you are using the main room and zone 2 at the same time, the main room will only give you 5.1 surround, and your zone 2 can play in 2 channels. But yes, it will play hdmi in both.

Unfortunately no Joseph. For me this meant my Roku 3 could only be played in my main room, as the only output option from the Roku 3 is HDMI.

Does this unit allow me to have a second video source from the zone 2 option or is that for audio only because in the picture I noticed 2 HDMI outputs. How does that work thank you. Also if it does not can you provide me with models that can have a second zone that provides audio and video from the receiver?

I'm sorry but I haven't used the unit for more than one sound and picture device. It sounds like that is important for you purchase choice but other than that it is the best received I've owned for what I use it for. In my manual I couldn't find anything about that but there is a website for an advanced manual at they not allowing links to other sits so maybe u can figure this out. "." Will be dash-- "/" will be "!" onkyo-com!manual!txnr646!adv!en-html of course there's a www in front

Hello: I don't think so, Basic Manual, page en-18, indicates that audio can be played in zone 2, i.e. no mention of separate video. Also on that page it says "To listen to a player in Zone 2, you must connect using an RCA cable, a digital optical cable (OPTICAL), or a digital coaxial cable (COAXIAL)" to the receiver, (this indicates that only. one switching path for the HDMI inputs to HDMI outputs exist. The Advanced Manual, page En-30, says the HDMI outputs can be assigned to Main, Sub, or Main+Sub). As for the second question, when I was researching receivers, I didn't run into a receiver that could process 2 HDMI signals at the same time.

Yes, it does video in a second room. The second zone is able to do video and sound through HDMI. Remember though, yo can only use yor main room in 5.1 ch when zone 2 is active. But this is common in all receivers from this price range to $1200, so its worth it. The receiver is very good, the sound is incredible. I have a $1200 receiver from 6 years ago, and this 646 sounds a bit clearer and louder. You will have to tweak after doing the accu eq set up. Brings the subwoofer level too high, you'll have to play with it to get the right sound. But that is part of the fun.
