Imagine a gateway to nearly limitless entertainment possibilities — and you've got Onkyo's TX-NR809. Blu-ray movies, HDTV programs, and video games propel you to new places with clear, digital sound to match the pristine images on-screen. The 'NR809's beefy 135-watt-per-channel amplifiers deliver plenty of sonic punch to your home theater speakers. And its state-of-the-art audio and video processors will have you thinking you really are where no one has gone before. But wait. The TX-NR809 is just getting warmed up.

Digital destinations by the dozen
The front-panel USB input invites your iPod® for frequent visits. The direct connection doesn't just charge your iPod — it supercharges your music. This digital connection lets you take advantage of the 'NR809's built-in digital-to-analog converters, which run circles around the iPod's DAC. Connect the receiver to your home network via its Ethernet port, and you can enjoy music stored on your PC through your full-fledged, high-performance audio system, instead of a pair of pint-sized computer speakers. Plus you can also enjoy thousands of Internet radio stations — or let PANDORA® Internet radio create a set of customized "stations" based on your own tastes. Or add Onkyo's HD Radio tuner to listen to the free digital over-the-air programming that many AM and FM stations now broadcast.

State of the art sound in your living room
Lucasfilm Ltd.'s THX Select2 Plus certification delivers guaranteed home theater excellence. Seven channels of high-current power plus state-of-the-art surround decoding team up to deliver intense, hard-hitting sound for your movies, music, TV shows, and video games. Exclusive THX Plus listening modes keep your surround effects detailed and accurate, even at lower listening levels.

An end to the battle over "the chair"
Back in the day there was only one spot in the room for the best sound. Now you can retire the "rock-scissors-paper" method of deciding who gets it. Onkyo included Audyssey MultEQ® XT, a sophisticated automatic speaker calibration system. The 'NR809 uses the included microphone to analyze sound from up to eight different listening positions, then automatically adjusts level, equalization, and delay settings for each of your speakers. You get precise response across a wide listening area instead of just a single "sweet spot," so everyone will enjoy optimized home theater sound.

We heard something new
Onkyo recently announced that the Spotify® streaming service is now available on this receiver, along with several others in Onkyo's 2011 line. We decided to try it out. Our Onkyo receiver's on-screen display showed our Spotify Premium play lists, including our synced iTunes® library. We were able to search for more music via the receiver remote and virtual keyboard. Spotify is a cloud-based service with a music library of over 15 million songs that has only recently become available in the U.S.

You will need to download a free firmware upgrade. Go to Onkyo's website for instructions. Requires a wireless home network. Receiver requires wired connection to the router. Works only with Spotify premium service. Subscription fees apply. Broadband service required.

You can select between PLII Movie, Music, and Game modes.
Dolby Pro Logic IIx Dolby Pro Logic IIx transforms high-quality stereo and 5.1ch sound into 6.1- or 7.1-cchannel surround sound. With Dolby Pro Logic IIx you experience engaging, natural surround sound. Special effects are more realistic than you ever thought possible. Your movies and television programming sound richer, with more depth. You can select between PLIIx Movie, Music, and Game modes.
Dolby Pro Logic IIz

Providing a dramatic listening alternative for 7.1 systems, Dolby Pro Logic IIz brings the added dimension of height to create an immersive 7.1-channel surround sound experience from any stereo, 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 movie, music, TV, or game audio source. Dolby Pro Logic IIz identifies and processes ambient sound energy and directs this information to front height speakers in a 7.1-channel environment.

Dolby Digital
Dolby Digital Dolby Digital has been selected as the default format for DVD video, standard 2 channel audio playback and HDTV Digital broadcasting. Dolby Digital features two independent surround channels giving same full range as the three front channels. Plus it adds a Low Frequency Effect channel LFE. Dolby Digital accomplishes this by using a technique called compression.
Dolby Digital Plus Dolby Digital Plus is based on core Dolby Digital technologies. Dolby Digital Plus is an advanced surround sound audio codec designed specifically for evolving media. Dolby Digital Plus brings cinematic sound to Blu-ray, broadcast, online, game, and mobile phone entertainment (up to 7.1ch)
Dolby Digital TrueHD Dolby TrueHD produces audio that is identical to and every bit as spectacular as the master recording. It lets you experience the full potential of Blu-ray Disc (up to 7.1ch), and is even ready for future HD delivery formats.
Dolby EX Dolby Digital EX takes the Dolby Digital 5.1-channel setup one step further with an additional center surround channel (reproduced through one or two speakers) for extra dimensional detail and an enveloping surround sound effect.
DTS
DTS DTS (Digital Theater Systems) uses the same concept as Dolby Digital, but implements a lower compression rate. This leads to more dynamic range, improved channel separation, and more subtle nuances.
DTS-HD High Resolution Audio DTS-HD Audio delivers sound quality that matches the clear and vivid images of high-definition video. Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs deliver five times the video resolution of standard DVD and produce images with stunning realism. But that's only half of the story. You need incredible sound to complete the high definition experience and DTS-HD Audio provides the highest quality multi-channel (7.1ch) sound possible. Movies come alive with sound as lifelike as the picture, and music becomes as real as a live performance.
Master Audio
DTS 96/24 DTS 96/24 offers a higher quality level of multi-channel audio (up to 5.1 channels) for standard DVDs. The "96" refers to a 96kHz sampling rate (compared to the typical 48kHz sampling rate.) The "24" refers to 24-bit depth, compared to 16-bit depth used for CD sound, which means there is more audio information present.
DTS-ES (Discrete/Matrix) DTS-ES (Discrete/Matrix) delivers 6.1 channels of discrete or matrixed audio. Movies encoded in DTS-ES will dramatically intensify the DTS surround effect with the addition of a surround center-channel speaker.
DTS Express DTS uses a system called DTS Express to deliver Secondary or Sub Audio to your player. The DTS Express audio is mixed with the Primary Audio, giving you an intensely great interactive surround experience.
DTS Neo: 6 DTS Neo:6 takes 2-channel (stereo) audio and completely transforms it into up to six full-bandwidth matrix channels of surround sound. Your home theater system will produce six and five separate channels, respectively, to match your speaker layout. DTS Neo:6 can also generate a center surround channel from 5.1 material.
Audyssey Surround
Audyssey DSX Audyssey DSX lets you augment a standard 7.1-channel surround set-up with two "front-high" and two "front-wide" channels. These extra speakers expand the height and width of the soundstage and help to produce a more realistic and immersive listening experience. Theater Dimensional Theater-Dimensional circuitry takes the complexity out of conventional surround-sound setups and lets you experience the excitement of surround sound from as few as two ordinary speakers. Theater-Dimensional's unique multi-speaker modes let you place up to five speakers conveniently by the TV, for the most realistic virtual-surround sound possible.
Other Listening Modes
DSD Audio signals are stored as single-bit values at a high-frequency sampling rate of 2.8224 MHz, while noise shaping and oversampling are used to reduce distortion - providing a better audio quality with a dynamic range of up to 128 db.
Multichannel This mode is used with PCM multichannel sources.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:

  • Panorama: Broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu.
  • Dimension: Allows you to move the sound field forward or backward.
  • Center Width: Allows you to adjust the width of the center channel.

Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).

Listening Angle: While listening in the Theater Dimensional mode you can adjust the listening angle to either Wide (if listening angle is 40-degrees) or Narrow (if listening angle is 20-degrees).

Audyssey MultEQ XT Automatic Speaker Setup: With the supplied speaker setup microphone, Audyssey MultEQ XT determines the number of speakers connected, their optimum crossover frequencies, and their distances from the primary listening position, then adjusts each automatically. The room's acoustical properties are then measured and corrected over the listening area in both the frequency and time domain. There is a threaded insert on the bottom of the microphone so it can be mounted on a tripod for accurate listening position placement. Up to 8 listening position measurements are taken to optimize the surround effect for a broad area. If you prefer you can also setup your speaker system manually:

  • Subwoofer: Yes or No for subwoofer connection.
  • Crossover: Set the crossover point for each set of speakers (front, center, surround, surround back, front height, front wide) and the subwoofer individually. The speaker crossovers can bet set to full bandwidth, 40 Hz, 50 Hz, 60 Hz, 70 Hz, 80 Hz (THX standard), 90 Hz, 100 Hz, 120 Hz, 150 Hz, or 200 Hz. The subwoofer crossover can be set to bypass, 80, 90, 100, or 120Hz.
  • Equalizer Settings: With the Equalizer settings, you can adjust the tone of the speakers and subwoofer individually with a 5-band EQ. You can adjust each frequency band (63, 250, 1000, 4000, and 16000Hz) for each speaker from -6dB to +6dB. You can also adjust each frequency band (25, 40, 63, 100, and 160Hz) for the subwoofer from -6 dB to +6 dB.
  • Speaker Distance: The distance from the listening position to each speaker can be set from six inches to 30 feet in six inch increments.
  • Speaker Levels: The output level of each speaker is adjustable +/-12dB; -15dB to +12dB for the subwoofer.
  • Subwoofer Phase: Switch between 0- or 180-degress.

Audyssey Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ solves the problem of deteriorating sound quality as volume is decreased by taking into account human perception and room acoustics. Dynamic EQ selects the best possible frequency response and surround levels moment-by-moment as volume is changed. The result is bass response, tonal balance and surround impression that remain constant despite changes in volume. Audyssey Dynamic EQ combines information from incoming source levels with actual output sound levels in the room, a prerequisite for delivering a loudness correction solution. Audyssey Dynamic EQ works in tandem with Audyssey 2EQ to provide well-balanced sound for every listener at any volume level.

Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume looks at the preferred volume setting by the user and then monitors how the volume of program material is being perceived by listeners in real time to decide whether an adjustment is needed. Whenever necessary, Dynamic Volume makes the necessary rapid or gradual adjustments to maintain the desired playback volume level while optimizing the dynamic range. Audyssey Dynamic EQ is integrated in Dynamic Volume so that as the playback volume is adjusted automatically, the perceived bass response, tonal balance, surround impression, and dialog clarity remain the same whether watching movies, flipping between television channels, or changing from stereo to surround sound content.

Bass And Treble: You can independently adjust the Bass (50Hz) and Treble (20kHz) of the TX-NR809 from -10 to +10 dB.

Double Bass: This setting boosts the bass output by feeding bass sound from the front left, right, and center channels to the subwoofer.

Music Optimizer: The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sampling rate below 48kHz and analog input signals.

Re-EQ (THX): With the Re-EQ (THX) function, you can compensate for harsh high-frequency content, making it more suitable for listening.

Dolby Volume: Dolby Volume provides comfortable listening, effectively controlling the volume level difference without unnatural changes in volume or sound quality to recreate the balance and nuance of the source audio. Dolby Volume automatically adjusts the difference in volume levels which can occur between different contents or source components, freeing you from having to make volume adjustments. Also, by adjusting the frequency balance according to the playback volume, it recreates the original source audio.

Late Night Feature: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: Off, Low, and High.

Note: This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature will vary based on the individual software package.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

Assignable Digital Inputs: The Onkyo receiver is equipped with three optical digital inputs (2 rear/1 front) and three coaxial digital inputs (3 rear). All six digital inputs are assignable. You can choose auto decoding , PCM, or DTS for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel, while DTS decodes only DTS formatted sources.

7.1ch Multichannel Input: The receiver is equipped with one set of 8-channel RCA type inputs for use with an outboard 5.1 or 7.1 channel decoder; there are inputs for left front, right front, center, left surround, right surround, surround back left, surround back right, and subwoofer.

Binding Post Speaker Terminals: There are color-coded binding post connectors for the left front, right front, center, left surround, right surround, left surround back, right surround back, left front high, right front high, left front wide/zone 2, and right front wide/zone 2 speakers. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs.

Note: You can select a speaker impedance of 4 ohms or 6-16 ohms

Bi-Amping Front Speakers: The Surround-Back speaker terminals can be reassigned and used along with the Front terminals to bi-amp the front speakers, providing improved bass and treble performance. When bi-amping the front speakers the receiver is limited to a 5.1ch speaker system in the main room.

7.2ch Pre Outs: The Onkyo TX-NR809 features 7.2ch pre-amp outputs (Front left/right, Center, Surround left/right, Surround Back left/right, and dual subwoofer) for connection of an external power amplifier.

Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the main speakers are automatically muted (the Powered Zone 2 speakers are not muted).

Note: When you connect an iPod or iPhone to the USB port on this receiver, no sound will be output from the headphone jack.

Video Features

HQV Vida Video Processor (VHD1900): The sophisticated HQV Vida VHD1900 processor is designed to enhance the quality of both standard-definition and high-definition video sources. The chip employs multi-cadence tracking, expanded 12-bit color processing, and four-field motion-adaptive de-interlacing to optimize video quality and detail. Two new HQV technologies are incorporated into the VHD1900. Auto HQV works to automatically enhance the incoming image. And HQV StreamClean cleans up compressed video in real time by eliminating mosquito and block noise from lower-quality sources such as online video sites.

HDMI (v1.4): The TX-NR809 has eight HDMI v1.4 inputs (7 rear/1 front). The front jack is fixed as the Aux input, while the six rear panel jacks are assignable to any of the other inputs. There are two HDMI monitor outputs; both outputs can be active simultaneously and will pass digital audio and video. The HDMI inputs will support uncompressed standard or high definition digital video along with the following audio signals: 2-channel linear PCM, Multichannel linear PCM, and Bitstream. The receiver's HDMI circuitry allows the receiver to output an HDMI audio signal from its speaker outputs, headphone out, and HDMI out so you don't have to run additional analog or digital cables. The HDMI inputs accept 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p signals and the analog video inputs (composite/component/S-video) are converted to HDMI for transfer to the TV.

Note: The 2 HDMI outputs display the same video signal and can be used simultaneously.

Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K Upscaling: The Onkyo TX-NR809 utilizes a Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K Upscaling and video processing. The Marvel Qdeo Video Chip produces quiet and natural video, free from noise and artifacts. Analog video signals (composite/component/S-video/PC) are converted to HDMI and can be scaled to the resolution set in the menu: Through (no scaling), Auto (automatically scaled to the highest resolution supported by the display), 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p.

HDMI Through: When enabling the HDMI Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "on" or in "standby" both audio and video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver HDMI monitor output. You can select between 3 HDMI Through functions modes.

  • Auto: Detects the signal and automatically selects the input sources.
  • Source: Selects the input source (BD/DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT, Game, PC, Aux, TV/CD, Port) for which the HDMI Through function in enabled.
  • Last: The HDMI Trough function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "standby" mode.

3D-Compatible: The TX-NR809's HDMI v.1.4 connections will accept 3D video from your 3D-ready Blu-ray player and output the video signal in 3D to your 3D-ready HDTV.

x.v.Color: The AV receiver supports x.v.Color, offering a wider color range than the current broadcast standard. For the x.v.Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Deep Color: The Onkyo receiver also supports Deep Color which allows the color depth of video signals passing through HDMI to be raised. The number of colors that could be expressed by 1 pixel was 24 bits (16,777,216 colors) with a standard HDMI jack. However, the number of colors which can be expressed by 1 pixel is 36 bits with a Deep Color enabled HDMI jack. Since the gradation of the depth of a color can be expressed more finely with more bits, continuous color changes can be more smoothly expressed. For the Deep Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Note: x.v. Color and Deep Color technology are supported only when source product, HDMI cable, media and HDTV all support those features.

Auto Lip Sync: The Lip Sync function can automatically synchronize HDMI audio and video that has gotten out of sync due to the complex digital video processing being performed by your HDMI-compatible TV. With HDMI Lip Sync, the audio delay required to synchronize the audio and video is calculated and applied automatically by the AV receiver.

A/V Sync Control: Occasionally, you may need to manually adjust the audio/video signals that are not properly synchronized manually. Typically when using a progressive scanning DVD player. You can correct this by delaying the audio; options are 0 (no delay) to 800 milliseconds, in 10 millisecond steps.

Component Video: There are 2 component video inputs and 1 component video output. The component video inputs and outputs have a bandwidth of 5Hz to 100MHz.

Note: The receiver also includes composite and S-video terminals.

Front-Panel AV Input: The receiver features a front-panel AV input for easily connecting a portable device; there are stereo RCA, composite video, optical digital, and HDMI jacks.

Picture Adjust: Using the Picture Adjust feature, you can adjust the picture quality and reduce any noise appearing on your TV screen.

Multi-Zone Capability

Multi-Zone: The TX-NR809 offers three Zones; a multi-channel audio/video system in your main listening room (Main Zone), a stereo audio only system in a second room (Zone 2), and another stereo audio only system in a third room (Zone 3).

Zone 2: Zone 2 allows playback of a separate analog source in 2-channel stereo in an additional room of your home. Zone 2 features line-level outputs and speaker outputs. This way, Zone 2 can be powered by a separate amplifier (keeping 7.1ch playback in your main room) or by the TX-NR809's built-in amplifier (limiting the main room to 5.1ch). The volume of Zone 2 can be controlled by the TX-NR809's remote or your separate amp's remote. When powering Zone 2 with the receiver's built-in amplifier, listening modes that require front high/wide or surround back speakers are unavailable. You cannot power Zone 2 with the receiver's built-in amplifier, if you are bi-amping your front speakers.

Zone 3: Zone 3 allows playback of a separate analog source in 2-channel stereo in a third room of your home. Zone 3 consists of two pre-outs (no speaker outputs). By using the Zone 3's line-level outputs, you can connect an external amplifier in a third room, allowing you to continue to listen to 7.1ch surround in the main room and play a different audio source in another room of your home. The volume of Zone3 is controlled by your optional integrated amp.

Compatible Zone Sources: Only Tuner, analog, USB, and Network audio sources can be sent to Zone 2 or Zone 3. You must currently be listening to a USB device or Network audio source in the Main Zone to initially select USB or Network as a source in Zone 2 or Zone 3. Then you can switch the Main Zone to any source you desire.

Note: You cannot select different AM/FM radio stations or listen to USB and Network content in separate Zones at the same time.

Incompatible Zone Sources: Optical/coaxial digital and HDMI audio sources are not output to Zone 2 or 3. You cannot output any video signal to Zone 2 or 3.

Whole House Mode: The Whole House Mode is useful when you want to add extra background music to your house party; this allows you to enjoy the same stereo music as the main room in separate rooms (Multi Zone: Powered Zone 2). The Whole House Mode selects the same input source for Multi Zone as the main room's.

Convenience Features

On-Screen GUI (via HDMI): The Onkyo AV receiver offers an on-screen setup menu (GUI) through its HDMI output. The on-screen display offers multiple language text, such as - English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian. If your TV is connected to the composite video or component video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings.

Hidden Front-Panel Controls: The majority of the receiver's front-panel controls are hidden behind a manual fold-down panel. This gives the AV receiver a very clean, sleek look.

Name Input: You can enter a preset name for each individual input and radio preset for easy identification. When entered, the preset name will appear on the the unit's front-panel display and on-screen menu.

Display Dimmer: The display brightness has three settings; Dim, Dimmer, and Normal.

Sleep Timer: From the remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after as much as 90 minutes or as little as 10 minutes; choices are presented in 10 minute increments.

Auto Standby: The AV receiver will automatically go into Standby mode, if there is no operation for 30 minutes with no audio/video signal input.

Remote Control

Multibrand/Learning Remote: The supplied wireless remote is a multibrand/learning remote. The remote is pre-programmed to operate popular brands of equipment including DVD players, DVD recorders, Blu-ray players, VCRs, TVs, Cable boxes and Satellite receivers. Also, the remote can learn up to 32 commands from infrared remotes of other components.

Macros: You can sequentially operate Onkyo components via simple commands from a single-button press, using the included IR remote control. There are three Activities buttons (My Movie/My TV/My Music) that can be programmed to perform a sequence of commands with just one button press; each macro button can perform up to 32 commands.

HDMI Control: This function allows CEC-compatible components (Toshiba REGZA-LINK TV/Sharp TV) or RIHD-compatible components connected via HDMI to be controlled with the TX-NR809. The AV receiver offers the following CEC HDMI controls.

  • The AV receiver will enter Standby mode when the power of the TV is turned to Standby.
  • You can set on the menu screen of the TV to either output the audio from the speakers connected to the AV receiver, or from the speakers of the TV.
  • It is possible to output the audio/video from the antenna or from the input jack of the TV from the speakers connected to the AV receiver.
  • Input to the AV receiver can be selected with the remote controller of the TV.
  • Operations such as volume adjustment or similar for the AV receiver can be performed from the remote controller of the TV.

RI Remote Control Jack: The 1/8" RI remote control jack allows you to connect this receiver to other compatible Onkyo components.

IR Input: The 3.5mm IR input jack allows you to control the receiver without line-of-sight access using an optional IR remote control system and locating the remote sensor in sight.

12 Volt Trigger: The two 3.5mm minijack outputs can be connected to the 12-volt trigger input on a power amplifier in Zone 2 or Zone 3. When the zone is turned on, a 12-volt trigger signal is output.

RS-232C Port: The TX-NR809 has an RS-232C port for connection to external control systems from companies such as AMX or Crestron.

Remote App for iPod/iPhone: Additional system control is provided by Onkyo's Remote App, which lets you use your iPod touch/iPhone as a remote controller. You gain control of the Onkyo A/V receiver via your iPod touch/iPhone over your home's wireless network. The Onkyo Remote App for iPod touch and iPhone provides an intuitive way to operate the Onkyo network A/V receiver.

  • Intuitive GUI: The Remote App's graphical user interface (GUI) lets you see menus for input source, network source, or radio station, and make your selection accordingly.
  • Menu Control: Selecting the Home Menu feature on your iPod touch/iPhone makes the receiver's main menu page appear overlaid on your home theater display. You can then access a variety of menus that let you adjust settings on the connected Onkyo receiver.
  • Volume & Tone Control: Onkyo's Remote App makes smart use of the accelerometer inside your iPod touch or iPhone. Simply tilt the iPod touch/iPhone right or left to turn the volume up or down. The app also lets you adjust bass & treble levels, and select dedicated listening modes, via your iPod touch/iPhone's touchscreen interface.
  • Audio/Video Information: Your iPod touch/iPhone offers a variety of useful information when you want to know more about the content playing back through your system. You can quickly check if your audio content is encoded as stereo or multichannel, for example, or whether your video content is in standard or high definition.

Note: Available as a free download from the online Apple App Store. The Onkyo Remote App is compatible with most network-capable Onkyo A/V receivers released in 2009 or later and the iPod touch (3rd/4th gen) or iPhone (3GS/4), with iOS 4.2 or later. The receiver must be connected to your home's wireless (WiFi) network.

Remote App for Android: The Onkyo Remote App for Android supports wireless audio and remote control functionality for all 2011 Onkyo Network AV Receivers. The app operates over a wireless LAN and enables a range of remote control functions, such as volume and tone control, as well as input selection from your Android device. The Onkyo Remote App for Android also allows you to stream wireless audio stored on your Android device to your Onkyo home theater system.

Note: The Onkyo Remote App requires your Android device (2.1-up) and your connected 2011 Onkyo Network AV Receiver to be connected to the same wireless (WiFi) network. Support for WMA and FLAC formats depends on the model of Android phone.

Poor warranty support

Written By B, Overland Park Kansas on Saturday, March 29, 2014

I bought this receiver 2 years ago and was satisfied until the unit stopped outputting sound all together. The technical support and customer service for onkyo is horrible. There is no way get service on the unit because they won't respond to emails and repair centers need authorization before repairing the unit. My advice is to stay away from a company that doesn't support their products after they sell them.

Pros: Great while it lasted

Cons: Electrical malfunction and no customer support

Channel bad after 1 year!

Written By What? Failed already., Nashville, TN on Friday, May 31, 2013

Its been a great received up until now. One of the surround channels have failed after one year of limited service. I have purchased Denon for the past 10 years without ever having a problem.

Pros: Easy programming and good sound

Cons: bad quality.

Great Receiver

Written By Jim, Central VA on Wednesday, December 21, 2011

I purchased this receiver to power my Polk RTi A7 speakers which I use as the front channels in my 5.2 HT system. The RTi A7's really like power and this receiver delivered. As soon as I plugged the speakers into this receiver they went from sounding very good to sounding incredible. The rest of the system really came alive as well.

Needless to say, the TX-NR809 has really made watching movies fun. You feel like you become part of the movie as the sound encompasses you.

I also really enjoy listening to Pandora Radio through the network setup. But what I really like about this receiver is the ease of use. We all know that modern technology offers us a lot of options and those options often create headaches. But this receiver really is easy to use and I have yet to experience any problems with setting anything up. Even the firmware update was easy and I had never done one before. I highly recommend this receiver.

Pros: Great sound and power especially for the price. You also get lots of bells and whistles yet the set up is easy.

Cons: I had to buy a $40 USB adapter so the receiver could connect to the wifi network. Without question, at this price wifi should be built in.

Onkyo TX-NR809

Written By Glen, Oklahoma on Friday, September 09, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Solid well built receiver. My application was to power custom built sub-woofers and Onkyo delivers: great power, robust sound, solid warranty, endless features and has a sturdy chassis. Already own another and the sound should meet your expectations for a great home theatre experience also. Just for the record this means nothing if you dont have the customer service to back it up and Crutchfield excells at this and that is why Iam a lifetime customer.

Keep up the good work, Glen

Great Receiver - so far

Written By MD, San Jose, CA on Monday, August 15, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got the 809 as a replacement to the 808. I loved my 808 but 5 months after I got it the remote started acting up. Researching on the web I found out that there was an issue with the Onkyo device.

So far I like the 809. I don't see much of a difference with the 808 other than the fact that you can connect the iphone directly to the USB port and get it to work. I do however miss the ability to control my tv and BD player without much programming. The remote that comes with the 809 works with the above 2 devices after programming each button but features like my tv or my video do not work.

That is my only quibble, other that that the sound is awesome, the picture clarity very good. I would not hesitate in recommending this unit to others.
