    HDMI problems

Written By bts, nw wisconsin on Monday, April 27, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked great, for about 4 months, great sound, etc. Started having audio dropouts at about 4 months after purchase. Tried the "turn off deep color fix", and it'll work for a while, but this unit will need to be serviced. I bought this to upgrade a JVC receiver I bought in 1994, which still functions perfectly, in all it's pro-logic glory! If this unit needs service this early, I doubt I'll get many years out of this unit.

Pros: Great sound, picture, and user interface.

Cons: Needs service at 4 months of use. When it drops out, it is totally worthless.

    Onkyo is tough to beat

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When it comes to home amplifiers under $1000 the Onkyo TX-NR828 is truly hard to beat. From the sleek styling to the copious amounts of inputs, to the powerful 130w per channel, my home theater experience has never sounded so good.

Pros: Plenty of inputs, Bluetooth connectivity, powerful per channel output.

Cons: I can't think of any at the moment. I suppose you could find something but at this price I don't think so.

Excellent AVR. 8 HDMI outlets is awesome and more than any other brand. On-screen controls are very convenient.

Pros: 8 HSMI connections. Powerful. Versatile with many listening configurations available. User can connect many devices.

Cons: It was a little hard to connect devices correctly for me. It has been a long time since I have attempted this. But I finally got it right. It was all operator error.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I never write review so here it goes... I have never been so impressed as I am with the ONKYO 828. Crisp clean sound with plenty of power. I had a Sony THX receiver for the past 9 years that I thought was ineradicable but this ONKYO kicked it's butt. The separation of pure sound coming from each channel makes my head turn to mush.. After using the microphone to tune in the speakers to the room I never thought sound could be so good.. I will and have told all my friends about this receiver. Crutchfield from the start was the right choice to buy this receiver. With Fast shipping (In two day) I had one of the best THX Receivers I have ever owned. Sure I could have bought it at a retail store but the 7 day a week technical service for the life of the receiver is wonderful. If you are in the market for a new THX, Wifi, Bluetooth, Receiver I recommend the Onkyo TX-NR828 and I would not buy from anyone else . Crutchfield Rock's !!!

Pros: Fast Delivery, The best sound I have heard in a home receiver.

    Cons: NONE...

    Impressive!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Impressive appearance. Impressive performance! Easy to setup! Love the ability to Manually set up the speaker configuration on screen! I have the 5-Speaker Surround Sound set-up with 2 tall, front, floor-standing Definitive BP 2000 tower speaker configurations, with center channel and surround speakers, connected via Sunfire Theatre Grand Power Amp, hooked to the Pre-out section, which gives me 200W/Ch to EACH of 5 speakers. My only wishes would be that the Aux Input would have been accessible without having to open the flip-down door on the front panel, since I have a Niles Audio Switch always connected, thus necessitating having to leave the flip-down door on the front panes open all the time. Also, I have to use a small LED flashlight to see and read the tiny labels on the switches. Minor nuisance. Delivery of the unit was amazingly Fast! Highly Recommend!

Pros: Impressive appearance. Impressive performance! Easy to setup!

Cons: My only wishes would be that the Aux Input would have been accessible without having to open the flip-down door on the front panel, or at least had its own separate flip-down door. And, it would be nice if the tiny switch labels were illuminated.

I was worried that spending less than $600 would I would get a sub par receiver. IF you have a similar concern DONT. This receiver execeeds all of my expectations and pushes my Polk Audio ATi 9s to their limit. I love the ease of use and the multitude of connection options. Cant say enough good things. I even called customer support and received prompt helpful support from a very knowledgeable tech guy, not an off shore operator.

Pros: Power, Ease of use, Customer Support, Blue Tooth, WiFi

    Cons: NOTHING AT ALL

Got my receiver last week and I must say I am beyond impressed. This is my second Onkyo receiver and will never be without. Had a Sony receiver in between my two Onkyos and wasn't ever really happy. Plenty of power. WiFi works great. And the remote is easy to program. Plus I got it on sale so makes it even better.

Pros: Plenty of power. WiFi. Bluetooth.

    Cons: Haven't found any yet

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Onkyo TX-NR828 was one of 2 receiver s that I was looking at. In the end it won out, because it had exactly the features I was looking for, built in Wi-Fi and bluetooth right out of the box. The setup is easy in my opinion and it sounds great. Not to mention Onkyo's long history of creating great products.

Pros: Easy connectivity, built-in Wi-Fi, bluetooth, GUI, Price oh and did I mention Sound

Cons: None other than maybe a little heavy for some.

Day 2. Thus far, I'd say set up was pretty easy and the controls are logical. I like the fold down door that hides the majority of buttons and controls.

Pros: Back labeled well for connecting cables. On screen start up went well. Yay for a phono hook up and grnd wire attachment point.

Cons: big box. Fit in cabinet with about 0.5 inches to spare, height-wise.

    Awesome sound but HDMI issues

Written By MikeG, New York on Sunday, March 01, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased the TX-NR828 to replace my older NR-TX901. Nothing wrong with the 901....new enough to have an ethernet port for playing tunes off my computer, but it's just old enough to be lacking HDMI inputs, and I wanted to be able to switch all my devices through the 828, rather than choosing the desired video source on the TV followed by the corresponding audio source on the receiver. The 828 sounds great, maybe slightly better than my 901, but of the 5 A/V peripherals I own, the 828 couldn't handle one HDMI and one composite video. Crutchfield techs decided those two peripherals were "incompatible," and hours on the phone with the Onkyo techs didn't help either. Either device works fine directly into the HDTV. Ironically, the two devices that the receiver couldn't handle were the two I use the most, Sony CD and DVD carrousels, so the 828 went back because it didn't offer me any operational advantage over my great sounding 901.

    Pros: Awesome sound

Cons: HDMI and composite video upconversion issues

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

From the start it was an uphill struggle. I had HDMI problems from the get go. I updated the firm ware. Then receiver got into this weird mode wouldn't show Digital content came up in stereo not AC mode. So I decided to Reset the Receiver and start fresh. First thing I noticed was I goth the Onkyo displayed on my TV which I didn't get before. Then Cal system and it sounded so awesome displayed digital content. This lasted for about 1 week then the dreaded no sound out. Called Crutchfield rep and was able to send it back the next day. I have decided to take one more chance on this receiver. So follow up review will be coming.

Pros: Sounds awesome when it worked.

    Cons: HDMI issues.

    Onkyo 828

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Having been a previous owner of old Onkyo's receivers I have become particularly fond to its sound quality and reproduction. I believe Onkyo reproduces depht and quality of sound with sheer clarity that amazes the best audiophile. Having said that, I've had my share of problems with the video card blowing up on two previous receivers twice with poor service fixes thru the retailers. So, that problem made me go for Yamaha recievers that are sturdier, and hardly, in my expirience, fail that bad. Nonetheless went for this Onkyo after not feeling quite satisfied with a Bose Acousticmass 10 nor a Yamaha bougth at a good price. The Yamaha did good ,but when the Onkyo took over the space got filled with such quality of sound and depth perception on the home theater that there was no doubt that Onkyo did a great technological work on its receivers. Onkyo 828 claimed it spot in my home theater hands down. Of course the speakers also helped. Bose were no match for Polk Ts 500's all around!!. Yamaha did good, but its sound reproduction was to neutral, lacked depth perception and the musicallity that Onkyo showed. Crutchfield delivered to my door in 2 days with free shipping!!!! Great service!! Good!

Pros: Great sound quality and depth perception. Beautiful musicallity, and price!!!

Cons: HDMi not 2.2! Big and heavy, requires space!! Hope video card does not crash!! I am using a surge protector and line conditioner.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We have this receiver about a week now. I must admit I was reluctant to purchase any Onkyo product with the recent problems. We were using our 10-year old Yamaha RXV-2500 with minimal use for our home theater. The Yamaha just didn't cut it for our new larger living room, and it was time for an upgrade. We are running a 5.1 system with IL10 Infinity BS and center and Klipsch BS for rear surround. In addition two subs. Honestly what drove me was the 130 wpc, and bench tested at right around 100 wpc with 5 channels driven. I must also note all the other features for such a great price. The setup was fairly simple including the internet connections. It took about an hour to unbox, set in place, and install. After using the auto setup feature we made a few fine adjustment and we were ready. This receiver filled up our room more than we expected. The sound is warm, clear and inviting. After using about a week i would admit it really outperforms our old Yamaha by a large margin. I have always purchased Yamaha (and currently have three) receivers and so far been pleased with the Onkyo. If you have concerns don't. Onkyo sells a lot of electronics, so the more you sell the higher probability of problems. Consider who you are buying from, Crutchfield!

Pros: Solid Power, well built, lots of features.

    Cons: None

Awesome AVR & fantastic Crutchfield Customer Service!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased this new AVR, Onkyo TX-NR828, from Crutchfield after having purchasing & returned a similar AVR made by Sony that was defective, from a different and far inferior retailer. In chatting & speaking directly with Crutchfield's sales & technical service teams who are very knowledgeable, courteous & professional I purchased this AVR for my Home Theater needs. I have had minor set up issues for a fairly complex system which Crutchfield's team have resolved quickly & effectively. I am able to hook up two configurations of 7.1 speaker systems using the HDMI & digital audio outputs along with additional Zone 2 & 3 analog speakers. (one Zone using the pre-out through an older AVR). I am currently completing the final wiring for the second 7.1 configuration using the Soundback speakers & pre-out to the older AVR and will add to this review once completed & running. So far this is an awesome sounding, flexible & powerful AVR with many options & the Crutchfield team of technicians & advisors are second to none with regards to knowledge, speedy effective advise & great customer service. I will definitely be purchasing all my home theater & electronic needs from them. Thank you Crutchfield!!!

Pros: Powerful, great sounding AVR Flexible system with many options for Digital & Analog hook ups including Zone 2 & 3. (note Zone 2 & 3 are only analog outputs, which Crutchfiled did confirm with me before my purchase) Clear HDMI video up to 4K Excellent 3D processing Very competitively priced

Cons: Very extensive instruction manual that needs some simplifying & clarification for setup, especially to understanding the more complex capabilities. (Crutchfield's teams are excellent in supporting these issues!)

Great unit, built like a tank, worked great, but not Apple friendly

Written By Badgerbkr, Milwaukee on Wednesday, February 11, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Loved this unit and I would still have it, but it did not get along with my Apple equipment, except through Bluetooth. That was a fatal flaw. A good receiver is 1/2 computer and 1/2 powerful amp. This is one powerful amp that sounds excellent. The best except for its fatal flaw. The Sony plays with Apple nicely. The iPhone app controls the unit well.

Pros: Built like a tank, excellent sound, will never break, and if it does, you can anchor your boat with it-- its that solid. Lots of power.

Cons: Not Apple Compatible with airplay and USB

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i have had this receiver set up for about 2 weeks now and am very pleased with the performance. it replaced an older onkyo tx-sr805 which was about 8 years old and although it had more video inputs, most are redundant now as no one uses s-video jacks any more. also the multi channel inputs i didn't need as the power is more than sufficient for my master bedroom. the one thing i noticed is than it is a lower priced model, it isn't supplied like a lower price model. many no almost all the features it has are similiar to my onkyo t-nr3008 . the most obvious thing i noticed was the video processing with the marvell qdeo. although my hitachi p50x901 has excellent color and was isf certified, this receiver with qdeo made them pop. i immediately noticed it. i like the audyssey dynamic eq and volume feature and it seems to be more powerful than the 805 even though both has audyssey. this is the 5th onkyo i have purchased 3 being from you, the tx-sr805, the tx-nr3008 and now this model. the pricing on all was good and the information was excellent making the purchase that much more easy. free shipping in 2 days and it has always been here on time. my latest purchase was a difinitive technology super cube 4000 for my master bedroom which was ordered from you. not withstanding. i can't compliment crutchfield enough on the the excellence of there company and as i have stated before. i always find what i want at a very competitive price.

Pros: fantastic service, fabulous supply of products, unbelievable product detail even with no longer in supply products, and great shipping policy

Cons: none, none, none, none, and none

    Really nice

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking around the internet for a surround sound system that wouldn't break the bank. I was willing to settle since i was looking at things that got good reviews. Then I went to Crutchfield and saw this Onkyo on sale. It was in the price range I was looking for, but a better system that was replaced by a newer model. This was not a negative, quite the opposite. Now I had to put together a speaker system and I called and got help from an advisor. We, mainly he, did good. He told me that the receiver had more power than the listed 135 per channel. He was not lying. The sound this system put out is great, seriously. You want to learn how to be a couch potato? Buy this receiver and a good TV and speakers and you will be there.

Pros: Quality of sound, power, easy to use remotes, manual on CD

Cons: Have not found any yet, so maybe none.Well if I have to say something, it is a physically large unit.

    Nice.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to bring myself into this century, it replaced a 28 year old Kenwood receiver. After spending years listening to music on ipods and computers it's like hearing music for the first time. I have all Klipsch speakers and it sounds great. The setup was extremely easy and it's great to have all the audio/video and gaming equipment finally all integrated. I've only utilized about 40% of it's capabilities and at the current price it was a no-brainer for me.

Pros: Great sound, Easy set-up, nothing lacking IMO. Nice phone/tablet app.

Cons: As others have said, the labeling on the units buttons are hard to read and I'll add that the same goes for the remote, but I mostly use the phone/tablet app.

I had been looking at this receiver for quite a while at Crutchfield and other retailers and was lucky enough to get it during an awesome sale for like half price! In my opinion, this is truly a great product that will do anything that anyone could want it to do. Set-up was a little complex (I was coming from a home theater in a box system) but once I got everything all dialed in - extremely pleased.

Nice receiver for the sale price, clean sound , wish it had a little more power. Onkyo's cd instructions hard to interpret. good thing for Crutchfield customer support!

Pros: Nice clean look and sound, many features, good value for cost. Good product support from Crutchfield

Cons: Little weak on power output, Complicated installation instructions from Onkyo unless you are well experienced with audio equipment setups.

Good mid-range receiver. Plenty of connections, options, and power. I'm using this with a single room setup - primarily for streaming video and audio services. iOS app is average but usable. The network audio options like spotify work well and are easy to use. The universal remote has helped consolidate from multiple, separate remotes.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the onkyo after returning a Sony. I was not impressed with the Sony and the onkyo is no better. It is easy to hook up, but the operation is more complicated than it needs to be. Detail overkill is what I would use to describe the settings. I replaced a much less powerful Yamaha and this new unit does not even put out the same level of power as that 11yr old unit. I expected much more for a 1k msrp piece of equipment. I have klipsch dual 8" fronts with matching klipsch surround and height speakers with a Yamaha sub. This receiver should produce much more sound for the money. Crutchfield rep was very helpful assisting me with set up, but still does not cut the mustard. Buy a Yamaha instead.

Pros: Looks good, nice commanding presence. Sales descriptions get you excited and make you want to buy it.

Cons: Disappointing performance and unnecessarily complicated to extract the desired power which turns out to be not there.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I haven't had a receiver for over 17 years. So I had the salesman pick me out a system. I knew I would have to cough up some cash to get anything with any performance. I'm still getting used to it, so I can only say from what I know so far. I am happy with its output, I have a couple qualms, but nothing to major.

Pros: Easy to figure out installation if you have experience with audio, I had to call in for some help on some speaker usage, but other wise a breeze(I'm not a audio pro). With some miner tweaks here and there you'll have a nice sounding and not to bad at power receiver. I'm pushing 4- Infinity Primus P363, 2- VM Audio VAS428P Passive Speaker with the receivers power, then I have Infinity Primus PS410BK sub, and a Logitech's Z623 7" bass-reflex subwoofer with a amp pushing about 200 watts.

Cons: Cant hardly see the buttons, would be nice if they were back lighted, the directional pad is really hard to use if you have big worn out fingers like me. I'm constantly hitting the wrong thing. I don't think it has enough fan to it. I put a little 10" house fan on it, they say it doesn't need it, but I would like for it to last. Heat kills. In the apps I wish they had more option settings. But these are just my opinions and the gripes I have wouldn't stop me from recommending'

Cons: I wish the front panel controls had some lighting so that it's easier to control.

Great overall product. I was a previous Onkyo owner but ready for an upgrade to more modern features. Excellent sound and power from this system and lots of flexibility with input/outputs. I was strongly considering a Marantz because of Apple AirPlay, which the Onkyo does not have, however the bluetooth & wifi work very well on this so playing music from my phone or Spotify, etc is very easy and sounds good.

Pros: Sound quality, power for the price, speaker calibration, menus/config is clear, bluetooth & wifi connectivity, remote control & remote app for iPhone.

Cons: Not crazy about manual on CD vs a book...I like to make notes and annotations.

Had for about a year and works great most of the time. I set it up with two exterior speakers on zone two and the rest on zone one. Used to be able to switch between zones fairly easily then one day it was hard to get zone two only. Have to toggle between various zones and usually have to hit whole house mode to get zone two to come on. One time could get no sound for a few hours. Other than that it works great but honestly I wish I had something that worked flawlessly.

I bought this as a replacement for an ANCIENT STR-D1015. (I know, I know.) Anyway, I was looking for additional HDMI inputs as well as a bit of video upconversion for some of my older DVDs. This was a middle-of-the-road receiver that seemed to feature everything that I was looking for...and then some. The on-screen display is a bit cumbersome, simply because I'm not used to having something from this century. I've also added some front height speakers to my (previous) 5.1 setup, and I have to say that I'm wowed by the results. Great set of features at an even greater price.

Pros: Simple setup. Ease of use.

Cons: Night mode should be more readily accessible. Remote doesn't have an illumination setting.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Terrific receiver, especially for the price point. Right off the bat- it weighs just a tad over 33 lbs, which tells you that the guts are much more robust and that has shined through since initial use. Hefty power supply is great, have to remember that this is not this is still a receiver and not near something in the Mcintosh, Rotel type power. But for a receiver it holds it's own and then some. Beauty of it is- it has pre-outs if ever wanting to add a power amp in the future. Currently I am running in 5.2 with Klipsch RF-82s, an RC-52, RS-42s, a Sw-310, and RW-12d. Very efficient speakers, bright by nature with horn tweeters. Audyssey does a fine job as always, making the most of the gear and room. As always, Onkyo and Integra have terrific remotes, which I believe to be under-appreciated, and I think I've had a lot of experience with many other brands. This fits beautifully into your hand and buttons do light up, great for low light use. The sound is fantastic, very apparent upon sorround sound use that the huge transformer and discrete amplification is exceptional. Immersion level is intense. Music listening is equally impressive, in direct or stereo modes, and since it plays FLAC and DSD I use an external HDD to the USB input and enjoy lossless audio *note-my DSD experience so far has not been good. Other big complaint is very common- the Onkyo Remote app is somewhat fussy. Decent operation lately, but have reservations. *I use a wired connection btw. Overall, I love it

Pros: Great value- what you get vs. what you pay Excellent setup, GUI, and remote Flexible setup- many inputs and powered zone 2, line out 2&3. Especially beneficial when remote app is working properly Terrific sound, and pre-outs for expansion to power amp for thirstier speakers or improved sound

Cons: Very iffy Remote App Slow, yet functional DLNA

Onkyo was a brand i loved , purchased the 609 and after a year or so the hdmi board had problems, took it back to where I purchased it and decided to give the 828 a whirl and was very pleased with the amp . Five months later the amp has got the same issues as the 609, no sound. To be honest i'm pretty upset that they have not addressed this problem . I don't use it everyday and can honestly say it has had about 40 hours use if that. Going back to my local retailer tomorrow and think it is gonna be the Yamaha RXV 777. Be prepared for this problem to happen to you please get yourself a decent warranty like 5 years just to be on the safe side .

    Pros: Good if it worked

Cons: HDMI Board has serious problems throughout there range .. don't waste your money .

I bought the 2011 version of this model and after 3 months out of warranty the HDMI card failed. They paid for the repair, after I paid for shipping to have it repaired it lasted 3 months. onkyo says I can trade it in for 1 of their refurbished models but they do not have a similar model to the original so now I'm out of luck. I have been buying onkyo since the early 1990's and I will never purchase a product from this company ever again. Yamaha here I come.

I'm running 2 surround systems in my newly constructed house. The 828 is in my basement pushing my 18 year old Infinity Studio Monitor series' 125s. They're paired in a 5.1 setup with an equally old Infinity center channel and subwoofer, and the rear channels are Klipsch 6" in ceiling speakers provided by my builder. The receiver also pushes the same model klipsch speakers in zone two. The sound quality is outstanding! The old speakers have never sounded so good! This receiver packages all the features that I needed with the power I wanted at a price I was willing to pay. Really enjoy the connectivity the unit offers. I'm Listening to more web based radio than I ever thought. The Bluetooth pairs easily with my phone and other devices. I found the unit easy to setup, and the auto calibration worked flawlessly.

    Pros: Price, features and quality.

Cons: The remote app doesn't always find the receiver on the network. You have to uninstall and download the app again for it to work. Wish the receiver allowed digital signals to be played in zone 2. I ran an analog connection from my cable box so I can here the game in zone 2, but it's slightly out of sync with the HDMI connection to the main. However, I knew this limitation when I bought the unit. It's worth living with at this price.

Upgraded my Home Theater system from a Yamaha 90w/pc RX-667 to this NR828. Wow! What a difference it made! The bass is stronger, the mid bass more defined and the mids clearer because of the extra power that this Onkyo has. The Audyssy DSX really makes set up a snap and maximizes the surround sound noticeably better than the Yamaha's YPAO calibration system.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had been searching a very long time to find a powerful receiver that could offer TRUE zone B sound to power a set of outdoor speakers independent of what my 5.1 system is playing in the house (TV, etc). In addition, I recently decided to get back in vinyl since some really cool mastered Lp's are coming out (yes, I'm old). Well, this receiver delivers. It is easy to set up, and although some reviewers criticized the GUI I had no problems with it. They do offer phone tech support, and I did have to call it as the Blue Tooth stopped working. I had to do a hard reboot restoring factory settings, but it really wasn't a big deal.

The WiFi and BT are awesome. The receiver comes with Pandora and many other music channels installed. You can easily stream music wirelessly from iPhones, iPads, etc. All in all, a great receiver with tons of power and features for the money.

Pros: Powerful. Easy to set up. True Zone B with plenty of power. Phono jacks if anyone else other than me cares :). WiFi/BT enabled

Cons: Had spotty WiFi but that could be my internet service. The techs were very knowledgable and courteous to help me with a set up question.

    Updated review on the TX-N828

Written By Ron, Ellijay, Ga on Wednesday, September 10, 2014

Well after the initial positive review I started having problems with the receiver. I had friends over and we were going to watch a movie. When I started the movie we got a great picture but no sound. I never could resolve the problem so no movie that night. The next day I tried again but no joy. I had a great picture but no sound. So I thought that let it play and see what happened since I had no clue as to what was happening. Well low and behold after about 2 minutes the sound just started working on it's own! So I tried switching to another input to see what would happen and when I switched it to TV I got a great picture but no sound again! I waited about 2 minutes and the sound once again started to play!!! So I made a call to Crutchfield and talked to one of the adviser's and we decided it probably had a HDMI problem. I have never owned a Onkyo but I was aware that they had a problem with the HDMI inputs in the past so I decided to go with another receiver. It's a shame because when the receiver was working it was a great receiver! It could be I just got unlucky and got a bad one. I don't know. The one great thing about buying from Crutchfield wasit was less that 60 days old and I got a full and complete refund. Now that's customer service!!! You can bet that I will get my next receiver from Crutchfield once I decide what I'm going to get. I'm leaning towards a Yamaha since that's what I am replacing and it has been a great receiver.

    The 828 excels!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is replacing a 7 year old Onkyo TX-SR805 that is still chugging along but I felt an upgrade was needed. I've read about the HDMI board issues many Onkyo receivers are having this days and at present I've not encountered any. Keeping my fingers crossed. Audio is smooth and clean and the video is fine from what I can determine (I route my HDMI video through letting my components handle the conversion, etc.).

Set up was very good. The menu layouts have improved some in 7 years. The Audyssey worked better on this receiver than on the 805, at least for accuracy. I have scheduled a pro video/audio calibration with a local installer I have used in the past next month but I'm pleased so far.

The Bluetooth pairing with my iPhone 5S took two attempts and more than a minute but was fine after that. I use a wireless connection for Internet radio and that worked as well but could be dicey and slow in response to commands at times. This area needs more time and development in the years to come in my opinion and not just with Onkyo. I live in a sheltered valley almost 40 miles from Philadelphia and radio reception is very poor so, the internet radio performance is somewhat vital in my estimation.

I've lived with it a week now and no real complaints. I would consider this a superior choice. The extra watts per channel makes the difference. My score is really more of a 4.5 stars but they don't allow half stars.

Pros: Weight (almost 20 lbs. lighter than my old 805!). Decent internet radio and Bluetooth streaming services. Very good menu layout and configuration. Improved power profile from my old 805. Very good audio. Clean professional design. Good remote - I like buttons! - I'm a Harmony One owner.

Cons: Not too many and minor: Darn, these things still run too hot for my taste. Wish the wireless indicator on the front could be turned off or better yet included in the dimmable light set - bad move Onkyo. I appreciate the HDMI through routing on the hybrid standby but from my research it sure consumes a lot of juice - 85 watts.

    Clean and substantial Design

Love the built quality, looks, and sound. Had a $4,500 Pioneer that craped out, you would think spending that kind of money pioneer would get it right. .yeah...no they didn't. I always heard of the quality of the Onkyo and so far I am not disappointed! Im very happy with this receiver. I didn't want to spend alot of money like I did on the last receiver..but I didn't want a cheap one either so with this one you can really feel and see the quality, how it's built, how it sounds, everything, and in THX DTS settings. And 4K up scaling..my bose system sounds even better then the Pioneer!

    This receiver Rocks!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is a powerful rich sounding unit. I have a complete set of Infinity speakers that have a 200 watt maximum power rating. This unit pushes them much better than the Pioneer unit I replaced it with. Lows are deep and forceful, with midrange I hadn't experienced before. This is the first time I've heard 7.1 surround, and it scares me to death when something blows up in a movie. My music hooked up through my Ipod has a wow factor of 10, the depth and range of just stereo in the "all speakers stereo" mode, is breathtaking. I'm listening to stuff I haven't listened to in years because it always sounded tinny before. I would strongly recommend this product to anyone who loves their music, and can't get enough of their movies in HI-RES surround. The reason I didn't give 5 stars, is because you can't get a 1080 picture while using the HDMI inputs, my T.V. only has component inputs, so therefore I have to use those instead thereby dropping my TRUE 7.1 surround, to Dolby Digital EX, which is not HIGH-RESOLUTION.

Pros: Tons of power, and great hookups including WI-FI and direct Ethernet internet connections.

Cons: On screen display only works on HDMI outputs, my T.V. has only component inputs.

I love this amp. The certified 4 ohm feature resolved all my problems with the old amp. The up-convert to 1080P actually improved the picture over what I was getting from my cable box (1080I). I can see the difference. The customer service I got from Crutchfield was an unexpected bonus. My situation was unique and they bent over backwards to assist me. Attaboy Crutchfield.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Onkyo TX-NR828 arrived safe and sound and much anticipated. I searched high and low for the replacement of my Yamaha RX-V1065. The new Onkyo TX-NR828 fit the bill almost to the T, It was easy to hookup and it just plain kicked the Yamaha to the curb. My home theater has never sounded so good! I don't care if it's movies or music this receiver excels in both equally well.

Pros: Lots of power, easy to setup, good for both movies and music, excellent networking both Bluetooth and wired/wireless, Phono input and overall excellent sound.

Cons: Onkyo app. not as good as it could be. There is an alternative app. that cost about $7.00 that is much better and well worth the money. Onkyo should have used the higher end Audyssey MultiEQ XT32 instead they put in Plain Jane MultiEQ. A real step down for a receiver in this price range IMHO. No audio out for things like music cd-r etc.

    Great AVR for the price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great AVR. Purchased this one to replace my old Demon 3311. This is actually the second unit I purchased from Crutchfield. The first was a Sony which sounded great for about 15 minutes, then popped. The staff at Crutchfield sent me the RMA and the Onkyo very efficiently. I will definitely buy from Crutchfield again.

Sound and video are great, though would be better if I was able to send a different video and sound output to the second room. The zone 2 option is pitiful at best, why both offering it ifyou can't send any HDMI audio to it. I am using the same speaker output and have called them front wide so that sound will be broadcast in to my other room. This unit does a good job send a duplicate signal to two rooms. Bluetooth and WiFi features are also great. I appreciate using my phone or tablet as a remote.

    Pros: Sound and video upscaling

    Cons: No true zone 2

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am rather impressed by the quality of this product, both sonically and physically. I had some concern about pars burning out on Onkyos from my research, but so far I have not noticed any excess heat. I have let it be on for several hours with my blu ray player sitting directly on top of it as I had had with my old Yamaha. So far, so good. It any part fries, I will update this. The channels have clear and discrete separation when using the lossless formats in pure audio for blu rays When listening to stereo music I have heard some nuances in the music I hadn't detected before, even on vinyl records which I listened to a million times. By the way, it is nice not to have to have a pre-amp for the turntable. Wireless networking and Bluetooth setups were flawless. In short, I'm happy I bought it. My wife probably thinks it's too loud. Imagine that.

Pros: Ease of set up; great sound and video quality

Cons: Audio set up can't find my center speaker for some reason, so I have just adjusted it manually.

    Great receiver for the money

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Though I have owned Onkyo receivers in the past with good results, I was cautious to go back one more time due to firmware problems friends have experienced with the brand over the past few years. The features swayed me to go with it along with the current models not having reflected problems of the recent past. The 828 has performed better than anticipated. It is a good value at this price point and, if it is as reliable as my previous Onkyos have been, my decision to purchase this Onkyo over its competition was the correct one.

Pros: features, all of which function well set up sounds great, especially for this price point

    Cons: None to this point

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far most things I watch have been crisp and clear. I am having issues with Fox. Specifically watching NFL. The front speaker is extremely low and I cannot find a setting to make it louder . I would imagine there is one, but I have not found it. overall it is an extremely nice Receiver and I am very happy with it. it definitely gives you plenty of bells and whistles. I did turn the audessy off due to it wounding like you were in a tin can while watching movies and TV. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for an affordable solution for their home theatre. also would like to say Crutchfield is AMAZING! I ordered this on a Monday, they processed and shipped it same day, and I got it on Tuesday. mind you this was one week before Christmas also. That is quality that I appreciate. BB said it would take them almost a month to get it to me.... I cancelled that order and ordered from here. Crutchfield now has my business from here on out for home audio/ video.

Pros: Power, features, plenty of connections, look

Cons: remote - could be back lit. it is hard to see in the dark while watching a movie or TV. audessey makes things sound like you are watching things in a tin can.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great service for a Great product. I was amazed at how easy the install and setup was. After building Front high / Lo, and rear 3.5way,the Crossovers came in at 8 ohms. Time for plug and play. tri amped, using the Pre-amp outs for Front And center with no sub. WOW ! It has been a long time since I felt as though I 've gotten what I paid for, this time there is more. I updated the firmware, made a brief scan through home/set up and the first movie played without interruption. I will tweak audio later just to see. This nearly concludes an ongoing quest for the best. The Onkyo TX-NR828 delivered and I will share with you and friends my success. as herd through, Eton S-7, Usher, Morell, and A.C. 250 (for low front).

Pros: Plenty of power, enough channels for additional High front and rear. Nearly auto configure all those remotes into one . extremely well made ,button layout, Knob W / lite, all well done . If it 's time for you to win GO and GET one.

Cons: Look at all those units I have scraped. Those will attribute to my learning curve and will only bolster what does as intended.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent sound/features. However Onkyo's implementation of the Audessy features limits access to Audessy Dynamic Volume and DSX with my Definitive Technology Mythos SSA-50 sound bar. DF recommends that auto-speaker setup tools, such as Audessy EQ, not be implementer its Mythos SSA-50 sound bar.

    Pros: Great sound and features

Cons: Implementation of Audessy features and lack of backlit remote.

    Excellent on all levels

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a quality unit, very simple to set up and sounds amazing! I am using the unit with 7 MAS flush mount ceiling and wall system, Polk 12" sub-woofers and two remote speakers in another room. The set up using the remote microphone to fine tune the speaker system is easy, adding all your HDMI inputs is easy, and attaching the speakers is easy. I am able to run through my wireless network and get Netflix and Pandora with no problems. I am also running my Apple TV through the system driving a 60" LED TV and a Projector to a large screen system. Everything is crisp and the sound is fantastic. You can easily program the sound data for each input and it will stay with that input. This is a nice feature. So far I am very pleased. I waited for this one with the Wi-Fi and the Blue Tooth built in and I am glad I did! Very simple, High Quality unit, you can have this up and running and fully programmed in about an hour. Then sit back and smile! Even the stereo sounds great when run through my surround system!

Pros: Quality, nice heavy unit, smooth controls, nothing cheap feeling or looking Easy set up of system and fine tuning of speaker system Integrated easily with master remote control system

Cons: My new TV has an actual keyboard on the back of the remote. This would simplify using some of the features on this system. Just a suggestion, other than that I would like to see more advanced equalizer on the system that you could adjust remotely. I find that I have to manually adjust the base on the subwoofer in order to tune the system in right depending on what I am watching or listening to.
