7 Channel Amplifier: The Onkyo TX-NR828 AV receiver features a 7-channel amplifier rated at 130 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20Hz-20kHz, with 0.08%, driving 2 channels). The AV receiver's amplifier employs WRAT, 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry, H.C.P.S, and Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry for dynamic, detailed, clear sound.

    • WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): WRAT is based around a low negative-feedback circuit topology that works to reduce signal noise and distortion across the frequency range. A "closed ground-loop circuit" design is employed, in which each circuit has a separate link to the power supply. This helps to cancel individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion. High Instantaneous Current Capability (HICC) enables WRAT amplifiers to immediately cancel the speakers' reflex energy and instantaneously send out the next signal. The same high current better manages speaker impedance fluctuations, which can negatively affect performance.
    • 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry: The AV receiver incorporates 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry into the front & center channels. This core Onkyo technology employs a low-NFB (negative feedback) design that makes the sound more natural.
    • H.C.P.S. (High Current Power Supply): Under the anti-resonant cover of any Onkyo receiver, you'll instantly notice the High Current Power Supply (H.C.P.S.) transformer. With its huge, isolated power supply design and high-capacity filter capacitors, it delivers the large amounts of power necessary for reproducing the wide dynamics of movie soundtracks and the detail and clarity of your music.
    • Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry: Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry adjusts the gain so that less than half the amount of attenuation is needed, ensuring the signal never comes close to the noise floor. This protects the signal against noise, resulting in a dramatically clearer sound.

Amplifier Assignment: The 7-channel amplifier can be configured in three ways to match your type of speaker setup.

    • Normal (7.2ch): The Onkyo TX-NR828 provides 7.2ch surround in your main listening area. You'll be able to connect Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back, Front Height, and Front Wide speakers to the AV receiver (Zone 2 not available). The receiver will automatically select between the Surround Back, Front Height, and Front Wide speakers based on the source content and soundfield choice (the Surround Back, Front Height, and Front Wide speakers cannot play at the same time).
    • Front Bi-Amp (5.2ch):The Surround-Back/Front-High/Front-Wide speaker channels can be reassigned and used along with the Front terminals to bi-amp the front speakers, providing improved bass & treble performance. When bi-amping the front speakers the receiver is limited to a 5.2ch speaker system in the main room. Surround Back, Front Height, Front Wide, and Zone 2 speakers are not available in this configuration.
    • Powered Zone 2 (7.2ch + Zone 2): In this configuration, you can connect Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back, Front Height, and Zone 2 speakers to the AV receiver. When Zone 2 is off, all seven channels will be used in the Main Zone; the receiver will automatically select between the Surround Back or Front Height speakers based on the source content and soundfield choice (Surround Back and Front Height speakers cannot play at the same time). When Zone 2 is on, power to the two surround back/front height channels will be directed to the two speakers in Zone 2, and the Main Zone will receive only five channels of power. Front Wide speakers are not available in this configuration.

192kHz/24-bit DACs + 32-Bit DSP Processing: This Onkyo TX-NR828 is equipped with 192kHz/24-bit Burr-Brown DACs to decode and playback high-resolution recordings with less jitter and clearer sound. The receiver also employs a powerful and highly accurate 32-bit processing DSP (Digital Signal Processor) for better surround sound reproduction.

PLL (Phase Locked Loop): PLL jitter-cleaning circuit technology reduces jitter by comparing the input and output phases of the digital signal and creating an accurate clock waveform. This enhances the precision of digital signal processing and noticeably improves audio quality. Jitter-cleaning technology works both for digital signals input via HDMI and for digital signals converted from analog signals inside the receiver itself.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Onkyo TX-NR828 AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical or coaxial).

THX Select 2 Plus Certified: The TX-NR828 AV receiver is THX Select 2 Plus certified. Founded by George Lucas, THX develops stringent standards that ensure movies are reproduced in movie theaters and home theaters just as the director intended. From early design concepts to product rollout, THX works with its manufacturing partners at each step of product development. Every detail is meticulously mapped to the THX performance standards. And THX engineers spend countless hours testing and analyzing each product for sound quality, usability and interoperability. The result of this collaborative process is a THX Certified receiver, amplifier or pre-amplifier designed from the ground-up to present your favorite movies, music, and games in 5.1ch to 7.1ch surround sound loud and clear at studio reference volumes. THX Select 2 Plus is specified for rooms where the screen-to-seat viewing distance is 10-12 feet and the room volume is 3,000 cubic feet or greater.

    • THX Surround EX: The THX Surround EX mode further expands 5.1ch sources for 6.1ch or 7.1ch playback.
    • THX Loudness Plus: THX Loudness Plus compensates for the tonal and spatial shifts that occur when the volume is reduced by intelligently adjusting ambient surround channel levels and frequency response. With THX Loudness Plus, home theater audiences can experience the rich details in a surround mix at any volume level.

Onkyo Original DSP Modes: Onkyo's Original DSP Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. You can choose from the following:

    • Orchestra: For classical or operatic music.
    • Unplugged: For acoustic instruments, vocals, and jazz.
    • Studio-Mix: Suitable for rock or pop.
    • TV Logic: Adds realistic acoustics to TV shows.
    • Game: The receiver offers four different Gaming modes - RPG, Action, Rock, and Sports.
    • All Ch Stereo: Stereo sound from all speakers. Ideal for background music.
    • Full Mono: All speakers output the same sound in mono.
    • Theater-Dimensional (T-D): Theater-Dimensional circuitry takes the complexity out of conventional surround-sound setups and lets you experience the excitement of surround sound from as few as two ordinary speakers. Theater-Dimensional's unique multi-speaker modes let you place up to five speakers conveniently by the TV, for the most realistic virtual-surround sound possible.

Audiophile Listening Modes: The Onkyo TX-NR828 offers two audiophile listening modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. In Direct mode, audio from the input source is output without surround-sound processing. This mode delivers pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration. In Pure Audio mode, the display and video circuitry are turned off, minimizing possible noise sources for the ultimate in high-fidelity audio reproduction.

Audyssey Technology: The TX-NR828 features a full package of Audyssey audio technologies for optimal sound quality. Audyssey Dynamic Volume offers real-time volume adjustment, while Audyssey DynamicEQ improves your system's surround effects during low volume levels. Audyssey MultEQ automatically sets speakers to suit your room's listening environment and the speakers' characteristics. The AV receiver even offers Audyssey DSX which adds front speaker effects.

    • Audyssey MultEQ Automatic Speaker Setup: With the supplied speaker setup microphone, Audyssey MultEQ determines the number of speakers connected, their optimum crossover frequencies, and their distances from the primary listening position, then adjusts each automatically. The room's acoustical properties are then measured and corrected over the listening area in both the frequency and time domain. There is a threaded insert on the bottom of the microphone so it can be mounted on a tripod for accurate listening position placement. Up to 6 listening position measurements are taken to optimize the surround effect for a broad area. If you prefer you can also setup your speaker system manually.
    • Audyssey Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ solves the problem of deteriorating sound quality as volume is decreased by taking into account human perception and room acoustics. Dynamic EQ selects the best possible frequency response and surround levels moment-by-moment as volume is changed. The result is bass response, tonal balance and surround impression that remain constant despite changes in volume. Audyssey Dynamic EQ combines information from incoming source levels with actual output sound levels in the room, a prerequisite for delivering a loudness correction solution. Audyssey Dynamic EQ works in tandem with Audyssey 2EQ to provide well-balanced sound for every listener at any volume level.
    • Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume looks at the preferred volume setting by t he user and then monitors how the volume of program material is being perceived by listeners in real time to decide whether an adjustment is needed. Whenever necessary, Dynamic Volume makes the necessary rapid or gradual adjustments to maintain the desired playback volume level while optimizing the dynamic range. Audyssey Dynamic EQ is integrated in Dynamic Volume so that as the playback volume is adjusted automatically, the perceived bass response, tonal balance, surround impression, and dialog clarity remain the same whether watching movies, flipping between television channels, or changing from stereo to surround sound content.
    • Audyssey Dynamic Surround Expansion (DSX): Audyssey DSX adds front effect speakers to improve spatial sound reproduction. Starting with a 5.1 channel system, DSX adds front Wide and/or front Height channels for better sound staging (although both wide and height speakers can be added, only one pair is used at a time). DSX also applies Surround Envelopment Processing to enhance the blend between the front and surround channels.

Surround Parameters: The Onkyo TX-NR828 lets you tweak and fine tune specific surround sound modes to suit your preference.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust; Panorama: (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect), Dimension (allows you to move the sound field forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Pro Logic IIz Height Gain: The Height Gain Control in Dolby Pro Logic IIz enables the listener to select how much gain is applied to the front high speakers. There are three settings, "Low", "Mid" and "High", and the front high speakers are accentuated in that order. While "Mid" is the default listening setting, the listener may adjust the Height Gain Control to their personal preference.
    • Listening Angle: While listening in the Theater Dimensional mode you can adjust the listening angle to either Wide (if listening angle is 40°) or Narrow (if listening angle is 20°).

Audio Enhancements: The Onkyo TX-NR828 receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

    • CinemaFilter: Using the CinemaFilter you soften overly bright movie soundtracks. Movie soundtracks are typically mixed for a large theater (relative to your home theater) with lots of soft seats and thick curtains on the walls. Home theater settings often lack these high frequency absorbing wall treatments, making the soundtrack sound too bright. CinemaFilter accounts for this and for many movies sounds more natural at home.
    • Music Optimizer: The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sampling rate below 48kHz and analog input signals.
    • Late Night Feature: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: Off, Low, and High. This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature will vary based on the individual software package.

Bass Management: The Onkyo AV receiver offers Tone Control and Phase Matching Bass technology to get the most bass impact out of your system.

    • Tone Controls: You can independently adjust the Bass (50Hz) and Treble (20kHz) of the TX-NR828 from -10 to +10 dB.
    • Phase Matching Bass: Onkyo's Phase-Matching Bass optimizes low frequencies while preserving mid-range clarity. This means that powerful bass plays back with clear vocals; it doesn't overpower them.
    • Double Bass: You can also activate the Double Bass function in order to boost bass output even more by feeding bass sounds to the front left/right speakers, center-channel, and powered subwoofer.

Volume Setup: The Onkyo AV receiver provides the following volume settings.

    • IntelliVolume: With IntelliVolume, you can set the input level for each input (+/-12dB) selector individually. This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others. This function does not work in Zone 2.
    • Maximum Volume: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from 30-79 (max), or Off (disabled).
    • Power On Volume: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Last (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Min (0), or 1-79.
    • Headphone Level: With this setting, you can specify the headphone volume (+/-12dB) relative to the main volume. This is useful if there's a volume difference between your speakers and your headphones.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Onkyo AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Assignable Digital Inputs: The Onkyo receiver is equipped with two optical digital inputs and three coaxial digital inputs. All five digital inputs are assignable. You can choose auto decoding , PCM, or DTS for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel, while DTS decodes only DTS formatted sources.
    • Phono Input: The Onkyo AV receiver is fitted with a Phono input and ground terminal for connection of a turntable (MM).
    • Binding-Post Speaker Terminals: There are color-coded binding-post terminals for all speaker connections; Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back, Front Wide/Zone 2 and Front High/Bi-Amp. The binding post terminals will accept bare-wire, pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). Use 4- to 16-ohm speakers.
    • 7.2ch Pre Outs: The Onkyo TX-NR828 features 7.2ch pre-amp outputs (Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back/Front Height/Front Wide, and Dual Subwoofer) for connection of an external power amplifier.
    • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the main speakers are automatically muted. However, the Zone 2/3 speakers remain on.

    Video Section

HDMI (v1.4): The TX-NR828 has eight HDMI v1.4 inputs (7 rear/1 front) and two HDMI v1.4 outputs for connecting Blu-ray/DVD players, Satellite/Cable boxes, Game Consoles, and other video components to your TV. The front jack is fixed as the Aux input, while the seven rear panel jacks are assignable to any of the other inputs. The dual HDMI outputs can simultaneously output the same audio/video signal to two TVs (video is output at the resolution supported by both TVs). The HDMI jacks can accept and switch 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 4K video signals to a HDTV. The HDMI jacks will also support uncompressed standard or high definition digital video along with the following audio signals; 2-channel linear PCM, Multichannel linear PCM (up to 7.1ch), and Bitstream (Dolby Digital/DTS, etc.). In addition, the HDMI jacks are 3D, ARC, HDMI-CEC, Deep/x.v.Color, and Auto Lip-Sync compatible.

    • 4K Pass Through: 4K Pass Through allows the Onkyo TX-NR828 to receive ultra high-definition resolution video and pass the video signal to a 4K compatible TV or display monitor. This ensures compatibility with the latest super high resolution video formats. 4K pass through is supported by the receiver's HDMI 1-4 inputs and both HDMI outputs.
    • 3D-Ready: The TX-NR828 's HDMI v.1.4 connections will accept 3D video from your 3D-ready Blu-ray player and output the video signal in 3D to your 3D-ready flat-panel television.
    • Deep/x.v.Color Support: The Onkyo receiver supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television. The receiver's main HDMI monitor output supports the ARC function, while the sub HDMI monitor output does not.
    • Auto Lip-Sync: The Lip-Sync function can automatically synchronize HDMI audio and video that has gotten out of sync due to the complex digital video processing being performed by your HDMI-compatible TV. With HDMI Lip-Sync, the audio delay required to synchronize the audio and video is calculated and applied automatically by the AV receiver.

Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K Upscaling: The Onkyo TX-NR828 utilizes a Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K upscaling and video processing. The Marvel Qdeo Video Chip produces quiet and natural video, free from noise and artifacts. Analog component/composite video signals are converted to HDMI, so you only need one cable to connect the receiver to your TV. 480i video from the receiver's component/composite video inputs and any HDMI video signal can be scaled to a higher resolution set in the menu. You can set the AV receiver to upscale analog and HDMI video to 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, 4K, Auto (automatically scaled to the highest resolution supported by the display), or Through (no scaling). Upconversion and upscaling is only supported by the main HDMI video output.

HDMI Through: When enabling the HDMI Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "on" or in "standby" both audio and video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver HDMI monitor output. You can select between 3 HDMI Through functions modes.

    • Auto: Detects the signal and automatically selects the input sources.
    • Source: Selects the input source (BD/DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT, Game, PC, Aux, TV/CD) for which the HDMI Through function in enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "standby" mode.

Front-Panel HDMI (MHL) Port: The front-panel HDMI port is designed for the connection of select mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL standard. Simply plug your MHL compatible smartphone into the receiver's front-panel HDMI port using the HDMI cable that is included with your mobile phone. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images on your HDTV with up to 7.1 channels of surround sound. Play, Stop, and other basic operations can be controlled from the AV receiver's remote control. Your connected smartphone is also recharged upon connection, and no separate power supply for the device is necessary while connected to the receiver.

InstaPrevue: InstaPrevue technology provides a live video thumbnail of the available content on your devices connected to the receiver via HDMI. As a result, you can preview audio/video streams coming from up to five HDMI inputs previously assigned to input selectors on your HDMI connected TV. Even with multiple components connected to receiver through HDMI, you can easily switch between inputs as their previews are displayed on a single screen on your television. You can even use the InstaPrevue feature for Picture-in-Picture. You can specify the number of preview thumbnails, as well as their positioning on-screen.

Note: If no video signal are present, the thumbnails will be filled in black. With 3D video signals, the image may not be properly rendered on the preview thumbnails of InstaPrevue.

Analog Video Inputs: The receiver features five composite video inputs (4 rear/1 front) and one composite video monitor output (480i only). There are also two component video inputs and one component video output (up to 1080p).

Picture Adjust: Using the Picture Adjust feature, you can adjust the picture quality and reduce any noise appearing on your TV screen.

    • Wide Mode: Auto, Full, Zoom, Wide Zoom, or 4:3.
    • Picture Mode: Custom (Brightness/Contrast/Hue/Saturation/Color Temp), Cinema (for movies), Game (for gaming), Through (changes resolution), Direct (no adjustment).
    • Picture Settings: Film Mode (video or film), Edge Enhancement (sharpens image), Noise Reduction (reduce noise).

A/V Sync Control: Occasionally, you may need to manually adjust the audio/video signals that are not properly synchronized manually. Typically when using a progressive scanning DVD player. You can correct this by delaying the audio; options are 0 (no delay) to 800 milliseconds, in 5 millisecond steps.

Separate Audio/Video Sources: You can listen to the audio of one input source while watching the video of another. This function takes advantage of the fact that when an audio-only input source (TV/CD, Phono, Tuner) is selected, the video input source remains unchanged.

    Network & Tuner Functions

Wired or Wireless Network Connection: The Onkyo TX-NR828 AV receiver supports a wired or wireless network connection. Via the AV receiver's network connection, you can enjoy music files stored on your computer and listen to internet radio through a variety of online services.

    • Ethernet (LAN) Jack: The Onkyo AV receiver is equipped with an Ethernet (RJ-45) jack for connecting the player to your home network and computer. You will also be able to control basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip) using the receiver's remote control. Advanced music operation will still need to be handled from your Bluetooth-enable device. There is no song/artist information display on the receiver or connected TV. Continue to use your Bluetooth device's screen to view song/artist info.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Onkyo receiver.

iPod/iPhone/iPad Dock (optional): The Onkyo DS-A5 Apple 30-pin dock with AirPlay (580DSA5, sold separately) allows playback of your iPod, iPhone, or iPad through Onkyo AV receiver. The DS-A5 is fitted with a 30-pin Apple dock and offers AirPlay wireless technology. The DS-A5 connects to your home audio system via analog (RCA) or digital (optical) output. Convenience Features

Advanced On-Screen GUI w/ Setup Assistance: The Onkyo AV receiver offers an on-screen (GUI) menu system through its HDMI output. The simple on-screen display combines text and graphics that make setup and other operations extremely easy. The Quick Set-Up button on the remote or Home Menu button on the receiver's front-panel puts menus over the program you're watching to switch inputs or change a settings without interrupting your viewing. The initial setup assistant takes you step-by-step through speaker configuration, source connection, remote programming, and network connection. If your TV is connected to the composite video or component video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings.

Hidden Front-Panel Controls: The majority of the receiver's front-panel controls are hidden behind a manual fold-down panel. This gives the AV receiver a very clean, sleek look.

Multi-Source/Multi-Zone: The TX-NR828 offers three Zones; a multi-channel audio/video system in your main listening room (Main Zone), a stereo audio only system in a second room (Zone 2), and another stereo audio only system in a third room (Zone 3).

    • Zone 2 (Speaker-/Line-Level Output): Zone 2 allows playback of a separate analog source in 2-channel stereo in an additional room of your home. Zone 2 features line-level outputs and speaker outputs. This way, Zone 2 can be powered by a separate integrated amplifier (keeping 7.2ch playback in your main room) or by the TX-NR828's built-in amplifier (limiting the main room to 5.2ch). When powering Zone 2 with the receiver's built-in amplifier, listening modes that require surround back or front high/wide speakers are unavailable. You cannot power Zone 2 with the receiver's built-in amplifier, if you are bi-amping your front speakers. The volume of Zone 2 is controlled from the receiver when using the speaker outputs and from your add-on integrated amp when using the line-level outputs.
    • Zone 3 (Line-Level Output): Zone 3 allows playback of a separate analog source in 2-channel stereo in a third room of your home. Zone 3 features line-level outputs only. This way, Zone 3 can be powered by a separate integrated amplifier (keeping 7.2ch playback in your main room). The volume of Zone 3 will be controlled by your separate integrated amp's remote.
Note: *Compatible Sources - Only Tuner, analog, USB, and Network audio sources can be sent to Zone 2 or Zone 3. You must currently be listening to a USB device or Network audio source in the Main Zone to initially select USB or Network as a source in Zone 2 or Zone 3; then you can switch the Main Zone to any source you desire. To playback Bluetooth audio in Zone 2/3, you must also have Bluetooth selected as the source in the main zone. *Incompatible Sources - You cannot select different AM/FM radio stations or listen to USB and Network content in separate Zones at the same time. Optical/coaxial digital and HDMI audio sources are not output to Zone 2 or 3. You cannot output any video signal to Zone 2 or 3.

Whole House Mode: The Whole House Mode is useful when you want to simply add extra background music to your home party. This mode allows you to enjoy the same stereo music as the main room in separate rooms (Zone 2/3). The Whole House Mode selects the same input source for Zone 2/3 as the main room. During the Whole House Mode, stereo playback is automatically selected for all zones. The Main Zone & Zone 2/3 will play at the same volume level.

Name Edit: You can enter a custom name for each individual input selector and radio preset for easy identification. When entered, the custom name will appear on the display. This function cannot be used for the Network and USB input selectors.

Display Dimmer + Screen Saver: The display brightness has three settings; Dim, Dimmer, and Normal. If there is no video signal on the current input source and no operation for a specific time, a screen saver automatically comes on. You can set the time (3min/5min/10min/off) until the screen saver activates itself. Once active, the screen saver will go off and the screen will return to its previous state if the AV receiver is operated in any way.

Timers: The receiver features a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Standby function.

    • Auto Standby: The AV receiver will automatically go into Standby mode, if there is no operation for 30 minutes with no audio/video signal input.
    • Sleep Timer: From the remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after as much as 90 minutes or as little as 10 minutes; choices are presented in 10 minute increments.

Hybrid Standby: The Onkyo TX-NR828 features "Hybrid Standby" mode to save energy and provide greater levels of convenience. Hybrid Standby Mode provides "HDMI through" functionality and maintains a local network connection while the receiver is essentially powered down. This allows the user to watch TV without turning the whole surround system on. Furthermore, when on Hybrid Standby, the home theater may be powered up from "cold" using the Remote Apps for iPod touch/iPhone and Android.

    Remote Control

Multibrand/Learning Remote (w/ Macros): The supplied wireless remote is a multibrand/learning remote. The remote is pre-programmed to operate popular brands of equipment including DVD players, DVD recorders, Blu-ray players, VCRs, TVs, Cable boxes and Satellite receivers. Also, the remote can learn up to 32 commands from infrared remotes of other components. You can sequentially operate Onkyo components via simple commands from a single-button press, using the included IR remote control. There are three Activities buttons (My Movie/My TV/My Music) that can be programmed to perform a sequence of commands with just one button press; each macro button can perform up to 32 commands.

HDMI Control: This function allows CEC-compatible components (Toshiba REGZA-LINK TV/Sharp TV) or RIHD-compatible components connected via HDMI to be controlled with the TX-NR828. The AV receiver offers the following CEC HDMI controls.

    • The AV receiver will enter Standby mode when the power of the TV is turned to Standby.
    • You can set on the menu screen of the TV to either output the audio from the speakers connected to the AV receiver, or from the speakers of the TV.
    • It is possible to output the audio/video from the antenna or from the input jack of the TV from the speakers connected to the AV receiver.
    • Input to the AV receiver can be selected with the remote controller of the TV.
    • Operations such as volume adjustment or similar for the AV receiver can be performed from the remote controller of the TV.

Onkyo Remote App (for Apple iOS & Android): The Onkyo Remote App (from iTunes Apps & Google Play) allows you to operate the Onkyo AV receiver from your Apple iOS (4.3+) or Android (2.1+) device, using your home's wireless network. The Onkyo Remote App lets you access Internet Radio stations, AM/FM stations, DLNA content, and Input sources right from your mobile device. Content information will be displayed on the device's touchscreen. You also get to adjust tone controls, listening modes, and speaker volume from your compatible Apple iOS or Android device. The Onkyo Remote App even allows you to wirelessly stream audio stored on your Apple iOS or Android device to the Onkyo AV receiver and lets you control audio output for up to 3 Zones. The Onkyo AV receiver and your compatible Apple iOS or Android device must be connected to the same home network.

Remote Inputs/Outputs: The TX-NR828 contains RI Control, IR Remote, 12V trigger, and RS-232C connections.

    • RI Remote Control Jack: The 1/8" RI remote control jack allows you to connect this receiver to other compatible Onkyo components.
    • IR Input: The 3.5mm IR input jack allows you to control the receiver without line-of-sight access using an optional IR remote control system and locating the remote sensor in sight.
    • 12 Volt Trigger: The 3.5mm minijack output can be connected to the 12-volt trigger input on a power amplifier in Zone 2. When the zone is turned on, a 12-volt trigger signal is output.
    • RS-232C Port: The TX-NR828 has an RS-232C port for connection to external control systems from companies such as AMX or Crestron.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Onkyo TX-NR828 was one of 2 receiver s that I was looking at. In the end it won out, because it had exactly the features I was looking for, built in Wi-Fi and bluetooth right out of the box. The setup is easy in my opinion and it sounds great. Not to mention Onkyo's long history of creating great products.

Pros: Easy connectivity, built-in Wi-Fi, bluetooth, GUI, Price oh and did I mention Sound

Cons: None other than maybe a little heavy for some.

I've had the unit for one year now and I have had no problem with it and I'd buy it again, especially at the price now.

Day 2. Thus far, I'd say set up was pretty easy and the controls are logical. I like the fold down door that hides the majority of buttons and controls.

Pros: Back labeled well for connecting cables. On screen start up went well. Yay for a phono hook up and grnd wire attachment point.

Cons: big box. Fit in cabinet with about 0.5 inches to spare, height-wise.

    Awesome sound but HDMI issues

Written By MikeG, New York on Sunday, March 01, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased the TX-NR828 to replace my older NR-TX901. Nothing wrong with the 901....new enough to have an ethernet port for playing tunes off my computer, but it's just old enough to be lacking HDMI inputs, and I wanted to be able to switch all my devices through the 828, rather than choosing the desired video source on the TV followed by the corresponding audio source on the receiver. The 828 sounds great, maybe slightly better than my 901, but of the 5 A/V peripherals I own, the 828 couldn't handle one HDMI and one composite video. Crutchfield techs decided those two peripherals were "incompatible," and hours on the phone with the Onkyo techs didn't help either. Either device works fine directly into the HDTV. Ironically, the two devices that the receiver couldn't handle were the two I use the most, Sony CD and DVD carrousels, so the 828 went back because it didn't offer me any operational advantage over my great sounding 901.

    Pros: Awesome sound

Cons: HDMI and composite video upconversion issues

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

From the start it was an uphill struggle. I had HDMI problems from the get go. I updated the firm ware. Then receiver got into this weird mode wouldn't show Digital content came up in stereo not AC mode. So I decided to Reset the Receiver and start fresh. First thing I noticed was I goth the Onkyo displayed on my TV which I didn't get before. Then Cal system and it sounded so awesome displayed digital content. This lasted for about 1 week then the dreaded no sound out. Called Crutchfield rep and was able to send it back the next day. I have decided to take one more chance on this receiver. So follow up review will be coming.

Pros: Sounds awesome when it worked.

    Cons: HDMI issues.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Having been a previous owner of old Onkyo's receivers I have become particularly fond to its sound quality and reproduction. I believe Onkyo reproduces depht and quality of sound with sheer clarity that amazes the best audiophile. Having said that, I've had my share of problems with the video card blowing up on two previous receivers twice with poor service fixes thru the retailers. So, that problem made me go for Yamaha recievers that are sturdier, and hardly, in my expirience, fail that bad. Nonetheless went for this Onkyo after not feeling quite satisfied with a Bose Acousticmass 10 nor a Yamaha bougth at a good price. The Yamaha did good ,but when the Onkyo took over the space got filled with such quality of sound and depth perception on the home theater that there was no doubt that Onkyo did a great technological work on its receivers. Onkyo 828 claimed it spot in my home theater hands down. Of course the speakers also helped. Bose were no match for Polk Ts 500's all around!!. Yamaha did good, but its sound reproduction was to neutral, lacked depth perception and the musicallity that Onkyo showed. Crutchfield delivered to my door in 2 days with free shipping!!!! Great service!! Good!

Pros: Great sound quality and depth perception. Beautiful musicallity, and price!!!

Cons: HDMi not 2.2! Big and heavy, requires space!! Hope video card does not crash!! I am using a surge protector and line conditioner.

TX-NR828 Really Nice, Solid, Go For It

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We have this receiver about a week now. I must admit I was reluctant to purchase any Onkyo product with the recent problems. We were using our 10-year old Yamaha RXV-2500 with minimal use for our home theater. The Yamaha just didn't cut it for our new larger living room, and it was time for an upgrade. We are running a 5.1 system with IL10 Infinity BS and center and Klipsch BS for rear surround. In addition two subs. Honestly what drove me was the 130 wpc, and bench tested at right around 100 wpc with 5 channels driven. I must also note all the other features for such a great price. The setup was fairly simple including the internet connections. It took about an hour to unbox, set in place, and install. After using the auto setup feature we made a few fine adjustment and we were ready. This receiver filled up our room more than we expected. The sound is warm, clear and inviting. After using about a week i would admit it really outperforms our old Yamaha by a large margin. I have always purchased Yamaha (and currently have three) receivers and so far been pleased with the Onkyo. If you have concerns don't. Onkyo sells a lot of electronics, so the more you sell the higher probability of problems. Consider who you are buying from, Crutchfield!

Pros: Solid Power, well built, lots of features.

    Cons: None

Awesome AVR & fantastic Crutchfield Customer Service!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased this new AVR, Onkyo TX-NR828, from Crutchfield after having purchasing & returned a similar AVR made by Sony that was defective, from a different and far inferior retailer. In chatting & speaking directly with Crutchfield's sales & technical service teams who are very knowledgeable, courteous & professional I purchased this AVR for my Home Theater needs. I have had minor set up issues for a fairly complex system which Crutchfield's team have resolved quickly & effectively. I am able to hook up two configurations of 7.1 speaker systems using the HDMI & digital audio outputs along with additional Zone 2 & 3 analog speakers. (one Zone using the pre-out through an older AVR). I am currently completing the final wiring for the second 7.1 configuration using the Soundback speakers & pre-out to the older AVR and will add to this review once completed & running. So far this is an awesome sounding, flexible & powerful AVR with many options & the Crutchfield team of technicians & advisors are second to none with regards to knowledge, speedy effective advise & great customer service. I will definitely be purchasing all my home theater & electronic needs from them. Thank you Crutchfield!!!

Pros: Powerful, great sounding AVR Flexible system with many options for Digital & Analog hook ups including Zone 2 & 3. (note Zone 2 & 3 are only analog outputs, which Crutchfiled did confirm with me before my purchase) Clear HDMI video up to 4K Excellent 3D processing Very competitively priced

Cons: Very extensive instruction manual that needs some simplifying & clarification for setup, especially to understanding the more complex capabilities. (Crutchfield's teams are excellent in supporting these issues!)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Loved this unit and I would still have it, but it did not get along with my Apple equipment, except through Bluetooth. That was a fatal flaw. A good receiver is 1/2 computer and 1/2 powerful amp. This is one powerful amp that sounds excellent. The best except for its fatal flaw. The Sony plays with Apple nicely. The iPhone app controls the unit well.

Pros: Built like a tank, excellent sound, will never break, and if it does, you can anchor your boat with it-- its that solid. Lots of power.

Cons: Not Apple Compatible with airplay and USB

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i have had this receiver set up for about 2 weeks now and am very pleased with the performance. it replaced an older onkyo tx-sr805 which was about 8 years old and although it had more video inputs, most are redundant now as no one uses s-video jacks any more. also the multi channel inputs i didn't need as the power is more than sufficient for my master bedroom. the one thing i noticed is than it is a lower priced model, it isn't supplied like a lower price model. many no almost all the features it has are similiar to my onkyo t-nr3008 . the most obvious thing i noticed was the video processing with the marvell qdeo. although my hitachi p50x901 has excellent color and was isf certified, this receiver with qdeo made them pop. i immediately noticed it. i like the audyssey dynamic eq and volume feature and it seems to be more powerful than the 805 even though both has audyssey. this is the 5th onkyo i have purchased 3 being from you, the tx-sr805, the tx-nr3008 and now this model. the pricing on all was good and the information was excellent making the purchase that much more easy. free shipping in 2 days and it has always been here on time. my latest purchase was a difinitive technology super cube 4000 for my master bedroom which was ordered from you. not withstanding. i can't compliment crutchfield enough on the the excellence of there company and as i have stated before. i always find what i want at a very competitive price.

Pros: fantastic service, fabulous supply of products, unbelievable product detail even with no longer in supply products, and great shipping policy

Cons: none, none, none, none, and none

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking around the internet for a surround sound system that wouldn't break the bank. I was willing to settle since i was looking at things that got good reviews. Then I went to Crutchfield and saw this Onkyo on sale. It was in the price range I was looking for, but a better system that was replaced by a newer model. This was not a negative, quite the opposite. Now I had to put together a speaker system and I called and got help from an advisor. We, mainly he, did good. He told me that the receiver had more power than the listed 135 per channel. He was not lying. The sound this system put out is great, seriously. You want to learn how to be a couch potato? Buy this receiver and a good TV and speakers and you will be there.

Pros: Quality of sound, power, easy to use remotes, manual on CD

Cons: Have not found any yet, so maybe none.Well if I have to say something, it is a physically large unit.

    Nice.

I bought this to bring myself into this century, it replaced a 28 year old Kenwood receiver. After spending years listening to music on ipods and computers it's like hearing music for the first time. I have all Klipsch speakers and it sounds great. The setup was extremely easy and it's great to have all the audio/video and gaming equipment finally all integrated. I've only utilized about 40% of it's capabilities and at the current price it was a no-brainer for me.

Pros: Great sound, Easy set-up, nothing lacking IMO. Nice phone/tablet app.

Cons: As others have said, the labeling on the units buttons are hard to read and I'll add that the same goes for the remote, but I mostly use the phone/tablet app.

I had been looking at this receiver for quite a while at Crutchfield and other retailers and was lucky enough to get it during an awesome sale for like half price! In my opinion, this is truly a great product that will do anything that anyone could want it to do. Set-up was a little complex (I was coming from a home theater in a box system) but once I got everything all dialed in - extremely pleased.

Cons: Little weak on power output, Complicated installation instructions from Onkyo unless you are well experienced with audio equipment setups.

Good mid-range receiver. Plenty of connections, options, and power. I'm using this with a single room setup - primarily for streaming video and audio services. iOS app is average but usable. The network audio options like spotify work well and are easy to use. The universal remote has helped consolidate from multiple, separate remotes.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the onkyo after returning a Sony. I was not impressed with the Sony and the onkyo is no better. It is easy to hook up, but the operation is more complicated than it needs to be. Detail overkill is what I would use to describe the settings. I replaced a much less powerful Yamaha and this new unit does not even put out the same level of power as that 11yr old unit. I expected much more for a 1k msrp piece of equipment. I have klipsch dual 8" fronts with matching klipsch surround and height speakers with a Yamaha sub. This receiver should produce much more sound for the money. Crutchfield rep was very helpful assisting me with set up, but still does not cut the mustard. Buy a Yamaha instead.

Pros: Looks good, nice commanding presence. Sales descriptions get you excited and make you want to buy it.

Cons: Disappointing performance and unnecessarily complicated to extract the desired power which turns out to be not there.

I haven't had a receiver for over 17 years. So I had the salesman pick me out a system. I knew I would have to cough up some cash to get anything with any performance. I'm still getting used to it, so I can only say from what I know so far. I am happy with its output, I have a couple qualms, but nothing to major.

Pros: Easy to figure out installation if you have experience with audio, I had to call in for some help on some speaker usage, but other wise a breeze(I'm not a audio pro). With some miner tweaks here and there you'll have a nice sounding and not to bad at power receiver. I'm pushing 4- Infinity Primus P363, 2- VM Audio VAS428P Passive Speaker with the receivers power, then I have Infinity Primus PS410BK sub, and a Logitech's Z623 7" bass-reflex subwoofer with a amp pushing about 200 watts.

Cons: Cant hardly see the buttons, would be nice if they were back lighted, the directional pad is really hard to use if you have big worn out fingers like me. I'm constantly hitting the wrong thing. I don't think it has enough fan to it. I put a little 10" house fan on it, they say it doesn't need it, but I would like for it to last. Heat kills. In the apps I wish they had more option settings. But these are just my opinions and the gripes I have wouldn't stop me from recommending'

Great overall product. I was a previous Onkyo owner but ready for an upgrade to more modern features. Excellent sound and power from this system and lots of flexibility with input/outputs. I was strongly considering a Marantz because of Apple AirPlay, which the Onkyo does not have, however the bluetooth & wifi work very well on this so playing music from my phone or Spotify, etc is very easy and sounds good.

Pros: Sound quality, power for the price, speaker calibration, menus/config is clear, bluetooth & wifi connectivity, remote control & remote app for iPhone.

Cons: Not crazy about manual on CD vs a book...I like to make notes and annotations.

Had for about a year and works great most of the time. I set it up with two exterior speakers on zone two and the rest on zone one. Used to be able to switch between zones fairly easily then one day it was hard to get zone two only. Have to toggle between various zones and usually have to hit whole house mode to get zone two to come on. One time could get no sound for a few hours. Other than that it works great but honestly I wish I had something that worked flawlessly.

I bought this as a replacement for an ANCIENT STR-D1015. (I know, I know.) Anyway, I was looking for additional HDMI inputs as well as a bit of video upconversion for some of my older DVDs. This was a middle-of-the-road receiver that seemed to feature everything that I was looking for...and then some. The on-screen display is a bit cumbersome, simply because I'm not used to having something from this century. I've also added some front height speakers to my (previous) 5.1 setup, and I have to say that I'm wowed by the results. Great set of features at an even greater price.

Pros: Simple setup. Ease of use.

Cons: Night mode should be more readily accessible. Remote doesn't have an illumination setting.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Terrific receiver, especially for the price point. Right off the bat- it weighs just a tad over 33 lbs, which tells you that the guts are much more robust and that has shined through since initial use. Hefty power supply is great, have to remember that this is not this is still a receiver and not near something in the Mcintosh, Rotel type power. But for a receiver it holds it's own and then some. Beauty of it is- it has pre-outs if ever wanting to add a power amp in the future. Currently I am running in 5.2 with Klipsch RF-82s, an RC-52, RS-42s, a Sw-310, and RW-12d. Very efficient speakers, bright by nature with horn tweeters. Audyssey does a fine job as always, making the most of the gear and room. As always, Onkyo and Integra have terrific remotes, which I believe to be under-appreciated, and I think I've had a lot of experience with many other brands. This fits beautifully into your hand and buttons do light up, great for low light use. The sound is fantastic, very apparent upon sorround sound use that the huge transformer and discrete amplification is exceptional. Immersion level is intense. Music listening is equally impressive, in direct or stereo modes, and since it plays FLAC and DSD I use an external HDD to the USB input and enjoy lossless audio *note-my DSD experience so far has not been good. Other big complaint is very common- the Onkyo Remote app is somewhat fussy. Decent operation lately, but have reservations. *I use a wired connection btw. Overall, I love it

Pros: Great value- what you get vs. what you pay Excellent setup, GUI, and remote Flexible setup- many inputs and powered zone 2, line out 2&3. Especially beneficial when remote app is working properly Terrific sound, and pre-outs for expansion to power amp for thirstier speakers or improved sound

Cons: Very iffy Remote App Slow, yet functional DLNA

Onkyo was a brand i loved , purchased the 609 and after a year or so the hdmi board had problems, took it back to where I purchased it and decided to give the 828 a whirl and was very pleased with the amp . Five months later the amp has got the same issues as the 609, no sound. To be honest i'm pretty upset that they have not addressed this problem . I don't use it everyday and can honestly say it has had about 40 hours use if that. Going back to my local retailer tomorrow and think it is gonna be the Yamaha RXV 777. Be prepared for this problem to happen to you please get yourself a decent warranty like 5 years just to be on the safe side .

    Pros: Good if it worked

Cons: HDMI Board has serious problems throughout there range .. don't waste your money .

I bought the 2011 version of this model and after 3 months out of warranty the HDMI card failed. They paid for the repair, after I paid for shipping to have it repaired it lasted 3 months. onkyo says I can trade it in for 1 of their refurbished models but they do not have a similar model to the original so now I'm out of luck. I have been buying onkyo since the early 1990's and I will never purchase a product from this company ever again. Yamaha here I come.

I'm running 2 surround systems in my newly constructed house. The 828 is in my basement pushing my 18 year old Infinity Studio Monitor series' 125s. They're paired in a 5.1 setup with an equally old Infinity center channel and subwoofer, and the rear channels are Klipsch 6" in ceiling speakers provided by my builder. The receiver also pushes the same model klipsch speakers in zone two. The sound quality is outstanding! The old speakers have never sounded so good! This receiver packages all the features that I needed with the power I wanted at a price I was willing to pay. Really enjoy the connectivity the unit offers. I'm Listening to more web based radio than I ever thought. The Bluetooth pairs easily with my phone and other devices. I found the unit easy to setup, and the auto calibration worked flawlessly.

    Pros: Price, features and quality.

Cons: The remote app doesn't always find the receiver on the network. You have to uninstall and download the app again for it to work. Wish the receiver allowed digital signals to be played in zone 2. I ran an analog connection from my cable box so I can here the game in zone 2, but it's slightly out of sync with the HDMI connection to the main. However, I knew this limitation when I bought the unit. It's worth living with at this price.

Upgraded my Home Theater system from a Yamaha 90w/pc RX-667 to this NR828. Wow! What a difference it made! The bass is stronger, the mid bass more defined and the mids clearer because of the extra power that this Onkyo has. The Audyssy DSX really makes set up a snap and maximizes the surround sound noticeably better than the Yamaha's YPAO calibration system.

Pros: Strong amplifier Preamp outputs for all channels Audyssey calibration Subtle, clean appearance Very useful universal remote

Cons: I've owned it for a month and can't think any cons. Glad that I bought it.
