Onkyo

Receivers: Your ticket to sensational sound

Your receiver powers your speakers and lets you connect and select your entertainment sources. But a great receiver does a lot more — it ignites your emotions. From the passion of a favorite musical artist, to the crossfire of a super-charged movie soundtrack, to the intensity and immersion of a fast-paced video game, your receiver is the key to experiencing and enjoying it in full.

Bring all your movies and music together

Need a receiver with enough versatility to corral all your audio/video sources and deliver them with plenty of power? The Onkyo TX-NR929 is well-equipped to pull it off. It offers more than just the standard front- and back-panel inputs and outputs most receivers have. The 'NR929 has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for easy wireless streaming from devices like smartphones and computers. There's also multi-zone capability for powering speakers in up to three rooms at once. Or concentrate all this receiver's ample power in your home theater to enjoy movies and music in stunning 9.2-channel surround sound. Your speakers will really shine with the heavy dose of clean power this receiver delivers.

Bigger, more realistic sound with THX® and Audyssey DSX®

Would you like your home theater to sound more like the movie theater? The 'NR929 is THX Select2 Plus™ certified, so you can be sure you're getting the most accurate performance from your movie soundtracks. Plus, the "surround back" channels of this 9.2-channel receiver can be reassigned for use with "front height" speakers. This expands your home theater's soundstage vertically. Audyssey DSX and Dolby® Pro Logic IIz audio processing optimize movie soundtracks for this theater-like setup that will make your home theater sound positively huge.

Two-zone video switching

Onkyo's free remote app for Apple and Android

Onkyo's free remote app for Apple and Android smartphones offers easy control of network music sources (subscription required for some services).

Lots of receivers offer multi-zone audio playback. With 9 channels of power and three-room capability, the 'NR929 is no exception. But this receiver takes things a step further by allowing two-zone HDMI video switching. That means you can send separate video signals via HDMI to two different HDTVs in two rooms. So you can watch a Blu-ray movie in the living room while the kids watch a TV show in the bedroom. Whatever source you watch, the picture will look gorgeous in 1080p thanks to the 'NR929's Marvell Qdeo™ processor. And with 4K pass-through and upscaling, this receiver is ready for the next generation of Ultra High Definition TVs.

Stream music wirelessly from anywhere and everywhere

Wireless music streaming doesn't get any easier than with the TX-NR929. With both built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, you've got plenty of options for enjoying music from the Internet, computers, and portable devices. There's built-in support for online music services like Spotify®, Pandora®, and SiriusXM, as well as free Internet radio with TuneIn. Or send music directly to the receiver from your Bluetooth-compatible smartphone or tablet. Plus you can send music from your DLNA-compatible PC to the 'NR929 for playback over your Wi-Fi network. Onkyo's Music Optimizer helps make all your digital music sound its best, so you'll get the most out of all these options for enjoying your favorite songs and discovering new ones.

9 Channel Amplifier: The Onkyo TX-NR929 AV receiver features a 9-channel amplifier rated at 135 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20Hz-20kHz, with 0.08%, driving 2 channels). The AV receiver's amplifier employs WRAT, 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry, H.C.P.S, and Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry for dynamic, detailed, clear sound.

    • Separates Construction: Inside the receiver, the pre-amp and the amp are designed so that the power amplifier block and the pre-amplifier coexist, but are perfectly isolated. Furthermore, the circuit boards are fixed to the chassis so that vibrations from the base are suppressed.
    • WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): WRAT is based around a low negative-feedback circuit topology that works to reduce signal noise and distortion across the frequency range. A "closed ground-loop circuit" design is employed, in which each circuit has a separate link to the power supply. This helps to cancel individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion. High Instantaneous Current Capability (HICC) enables WRAT amplifiers to immediately cancel the speakers' reflex energy and instantaneously send out the next signal. The same high current better manages speaker impedance fluctuations, which can negatively affect performance.
    • 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry: The AV receiver incorporates 3-Stage Inverted Darlington Circuitry into the front & center channels. This core Onkyo technology employs a low-NFB (negative feedback) design that makes the sound more natural.
    • H.C.P.S. (High Current Power Supply): Under the anti-resonant cover of any Onkyo receiver, you'll instantly notice the High Current Power Supply (H.C.P.S.) transformer. With its huge, isolated power supply design and high-capacity filter capacitors, it delivers the large amounts of power necessary for reproducing the wide dynamics of movie soundtracks and the detail and clarity of your music.
    • Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry: Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry adjusts the gain so that less than half the amount of attenuation is needed, ensuring the signal never comes close to the noise floor. This protects the signal against noise, resulting in a dramatically clearer sound.

Amplifier Assignment: The 9-channel amplifier can be configured a variety of ways to match your type of speaker setup.

    • Normal: The Onkyo TX-NR929 provides 9.2ch surround in your main listening area. You'll be able to connect Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back, Front Height, and Front Wide speakers to the AV receiver. The receiver will automatically select between the Surround Back, Front Height, and Front Wide speakers based on the source content and soundfield choice. Only two out of the three speakers (Surround Back/Front Height/Front Wide) can play at a time.
    • Front Bi-Amp: The Front-High speaker terminals can be reassigned and used along with the Front terminals to bi-amp your front speakers, providing improved bass & treble performance. By using the Front-High speaker terminals to bi-amp the front speakers (and not the Surround Back terminals), the receiver is still capable of a 7.2ch speaker system in the main room. Front-High, Front-Wide, and Zone 3 speaker channels are not available when bi-amping the front speakers.
    • Front Bi-Amp w/ Digital Crossover: Should you wish to bi-amp your front speakers, Onkyo's onboard digital crossover system precisely separates high and low frequencies into two discrete signals and sends them to the appropriate drivers. Used in conjunction with conventional speakers, or with channel-divider-type speakers (which do not contain crossovers), the sophisticated DSP technology reduces frequency overlap at the crossover point for noticeably clearer sound.
    • 11.2ch Playback: The Onkyo TX-NR929 provides 11.2ch surround in your main listening area. You'll be able to connect Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back, and Front Height to the AV receiver. Your Front Wide speakers will be powered by an external amplifier connected to the receiver's Front Wide preamp output.
    • Powered Zone 2/3: The receiver's amplifier channels can be assigned to power Zone 2 and/or Zone 3 speakers (limiting the number of powered channels available for the main room). When the Zone 2 speakers are powered by the receiver, the Front Wide speakers are unavailable (limiting the Main Zone to 7.2ch). When the Zone 3 speakers are powered by the receiver, both Front Height and Front Wide speakers are unavailable. The Main Zone will be limited to 5.2ch.

192kHz/24-bit DACs + 32-Bit DSP Processing: This Onkyo TX-NR929 is equipped with 192kHz/24-bit Burr-Brown DACs to decode and playback high-resolution recordings with less jitter and clearer sound. The receiver also employs a powerful and highly accurate 32-bit processing DSP (Digital Signal Processor) for better surround sound reproduction.

PLL (Phase Locked Loop): PLL jitter-cleaning circuit technology reduces jitter by comparing the input and output phases of the digital signal and creating an accurate clock waveform. This enhances the precision of digital signal processing and noticeably improves audio quality. Jitter-cleaning technology works both for digital signals input via HDMI and for digital signals converted from analog signals inside the receiver itself.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Onkyo TX-NR929 AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical or coaxial). Even though the AV receiver will decode 7.1channel surround sound (via HDMI), it will only output 5.1ch surround, because it lacks Surround Back channel speaker outputs.

THX Select 2 Plus Certified: The TX-NR929 AV receiver is THX Select 2 Plus certified. Founded by George Lucas, THX develops stringent standards that ensure movies are reproduced in movie theaters and home theaters just as the director intended. From early design concepts to product rollout, THX works with its manufacturing partners at each step of product development. Every detail is meticulously mapped to the THX performance standards. And THX engineers spend countless hours testing and analyzing each product for sound quality, usability and interoperability. The result of this collaborative process is a THX Certified receiver, amplifier or pre-amplifier designed from the ground-up to present your favorite movies, music, and games in 5.1ch to 7.1ch surround sound loud and clear at studio reference volumes. THX Select 2 Plus is specified for rooms where the screen-to-seat viewing distance is 10-12 feet and the room volume is 3,000 cubic feet or greater.

    • THX Surround EX: The THX Surround EX mode further expands 5.1ch sources for 6.1ch or 7.1ch playback.
    • THX Loudness Plus: THX Loudness Plus compensates for the tonal and spatial shifts that occur when the volume is reduced by intelligently adjusting ambient surround channel levels and frequency response. With THX Loudness Plus, home theater audiences can experience the rich details in a surround mix at any volume level.

Onkyo Original DSP Modes: Onkyo's Original DSP Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. You can choose from the following:

    • Orchestra: For classical or operatic music.
    • Unplugged: For acoustic instruments, vocals, and jazz.
    • Studio-Mix: Suitable for rock or pop.
    • TV Logic: Adds realistic acoustics to TV shows.
    • Game: The receiver offers four different Gaming modes - RPG, Action, Rock, and Sports.
    • All Ch Stereo: Stereo sound from all speakers. Ideal for background music.
    • Full Mono: All speakers output the same sound in mono.
    • Theater-Dimensional (T-D): Theater-Dimensional circuitry takes the complexity out of conventional surround-sound setups and lets you experience the excitement of surround sound from as few as two ordinary speakers. Theater-Dimensional's unique multi-speaker modes let you place up to five speakers conveniently by the TV, for the most realistic virtual-surround sound possible.

Audiophile Listening Modes: The Onkyo TX-NR929 offers two audiophile listening modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. In Direct mode, audio from the input source is output without surround-sound processing. This mode delivers pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration. In Pure Audio mode, the display and video circuitry are turned off, minimizing possible noise sources for the ultimate in high-fidelity audio reproduction.

Audyssey Technology: The TXN-R929 features a full package of Audyssey audio technologies for optimal sound quality. Audyssey Dynamic Volume offers real-time volume adjustment, while Audyssey DynamicEQ improves your system's surround effects during low volume levels. Audyssey MultEQ XT32 automatically sets speakers to suit your room's listening environment and the speakers' characteristics. The AV receiver even offers Audyssey DSX which adds front speaker effects.

    • Audyssey MultEQ XT32 Automatic Speaker Setup: With the supplied speaker setup microphone, Audyssey MultEQ XT32 determines the number of speakers connected, their optimum crossover frequencies, and their distances from the primary listening position, then adjusts each automatically. The room's acoustical properties are then measured and corrected over the listening area in both the frequency and time domain. There is a threaded insert on the bottom of the microphone so it can be mounted on a tripod for accurate listening position placement. Up to 8 listening position measurements are taken to optimize the surround effect for a broad area. If you prefer you can also setup your speaker system manually.
    • Audyssey Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ solves the problem of deteriorating sound quality as volume is decreased by taking into account human perception and room acoustics. Dynamic EQ selects the best possible frequency response and surround levels moment-by-moment as volume is changed. The result is bass response, tonal balance and surround impression that remain constant despite changes in volume. Audyssey Dynamic EQ combines information from incoming source levels with actual output sound levels in the room, a prerequisite for delivering a loudness correction solution. Audyssey Dynamic EQ works in tandem with Audyssey 2EQ to provide well-balanced sound for every listener at any volume level.
    • Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume looks at the preferred volume setting by t he user and then monitors how the volume of program material is being perceived by listeners in real time to decide whether an adjustment is needed. Whenever necessary, Dynamic Volume makes the necessary rapid or gradual adjustments to maintain the desired playback volume level while optimizing the dynamic range. Audyssey Dynamic EQ is integrated in Dynamic Volume so that as the playback volume is adjusted automatically, the perceived bass response, tonal balance, surround impression, and dialog clarity remain the same whether watching movies, flipping between television channels, or changing from stereo to surround sound content.
    • Audyssey Dynamic Surround Expansion (DSX): Audyssey DSX adds front effect speakers to improve spatial sound reproduction. Starting with a 5.1 channel system, DSX adds front Wide and/or front Height channels for better sound staging (although both wide and height speakers can be added, only one pair is used at a time). DSX also applies Surround Envelopment Processing to enhance the blend between the front and surround channels.

Surround Parameters: The Onkyo TX-NR929 lets you tweak and fine tune specific surround sound modes to suit your preference.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust; Panorama: (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect), Dimension (allows you to move the sound field forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Pro Logic IIz Height Gain: The Height Gain Control in Dolby Pro Logic IIz enables the listener to select how much gain is applied to the front high speakers. There are three settings, "Low", "Mid" and "High", and the front high speakers are accentuated in that order. While "Mid" is the default listening setting, the listener may adjust the Height Gain Control to their personal preference.
    • Listening Angle: While listening in the Theater Dimensional mode you can adjust the listening angle to either Wide (if listening angle is 40°) or Narrow (if listening angle is 20°).
    • Screen Centered Dialog: By using the Front High speakers, this function move the center image of dialog audio upwards, so that the dialog image is fixed to the display height.

Audio Enhancements: The Onkyo TX-NR929 receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

    • CinemaFilter: Using the CinemaFilter you soften overly bright movie soundtracks. Movie soundtracks are typically mixed for a large theater (relative to your home theater) with lots of soft seats and thick curtains on the walls. Home theater settings often lack these high frequency absorbing wall treatments, making the soundtrack sound too bright. CinemaFilter accounts for this and for many movies sounds more natural at home.
    • Music Optimizer: The Music Optimizer function enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sampling rate below 48kHz and analog input signals.
    • Late Night Feature: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: Off, Low, and High. This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature will vary based on the individual software package.

Bass Management: The Onkyo AV receiver offers Tone Control and Phase Matching Bass technology to get the most bass impact out of your system.

    • Tone Controls: You can independently adjust the Bass (50Hz) and Treble (20kHz) of the TX-NR929 from -10 to +10 dB.
    • Phase Matching Bass: Onkyo's Phase-Matching Bass optimizes low frequencies while preserving mid-range clarity. This means that powerful bass plays back with clear vocals; it doesn't overpower them.
    • Double Bass: You can also activate the Double Bass function in order to boost bass output even more by feeding bass sounds to the front left/right speakers, center-channel, and powered subwoofer.

Volume Setup: The Onkyo AV receiver provides the following volume settings.

    • IntelliVolume: With IntelliVolume, you can set the input level for each input (+/-12dB) selector individually. This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others. This function does not work in Zone 2.
    • Maximum Volume: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from 30-79 (max), or Off (disabled).
    • Power On Volume: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Last (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Min (0), or 1-79.
    • Headphone Level: With this setting, you can specify the headphone volume (+/-12dB) relative to the main volume. This is useful if there's a volume difference between your speakers and your headphones.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Onkyo AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Assignable Digital Inputs: The Onkyo receiver is equipped with three optical digital inputs (2 rear/1 front) and three coaxial digital inputs. All six digital inputs are assignable. You can choose auto decoding , PCM, or DTS for the digital audio inputs. Auto will decode the signal in its original form (Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM, etc), PCM decodes the signal to 2-channel, while DTS decodes only DTS formatted sources.
    • Phono Input: The Onkyo AV receiver is fitted with a Phono input and ground terminal for connection of a turntable (MM).
    • Binding-Post Speaker Terminals: There are color-coded binding post connectors for the Front Left, Front Right, Center, Surround Left, Surround Right, Surround Back Left, Surround Back Right, Front Wide/Zone 2 Left (Bi-amp), Front Wide/Zone 2 Right (Bi-amp), Front Height/Zone 3 Left (Front B), Front Height/Zone 3 Right (Front B) speakers. The binding post terminals will accept bare-wire, pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). Use 4- to 16-ohm speakers.
    • 11.2ch Pre Outs: The Onkyo TX-NR929 features 11.2ch pre-amp outputs (Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back, Front Wide/Zone B, Front Height/Zone 3, and dual subwoofer) for connection of an external power amplifier.
    • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the main speakers are automatically muted. However, the Zone 2/3 speakers remain on.

    Video Section

HDMI (v1.4): The TX-NR929 has nine HDMI v1.4 inputs (8 rear/1 front) and two HDMI v1.4 outputs for connecting Blu-ray/DVD players, Satellite/Cable boxes, Game Consoles, and other video components to your TV. The front jack is fixed as the Aux input, while the eight rear panel jacks are assignable to any of the other inputs. The two HDMI outputs display the same video signal and can be used simultaneously (the second HDMI monitor output can also be used for Zone 2 to display a different HDMI source). The HDMI jacks can accept and switch 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 4K video signals to a HDTV. The HDMI jacks will also support uncompressed standard or high definition digital video along with the following audio signals; 2-channel linear PCM, Multichannel linear PCM (up to 7.1ch), and Bitstream (Dolby Digital/DTS, etc.). In addition, the HDMI jacks are 3D, ARC, HDMI-CEC, Deep/x.v.Color, and Auto Lip-Sync compatible.

    • 4K Pass Through: 4K Pass Through allows the Onkyo TX-NR929 to receive ultra high-definition resolution video and pass the video signal to a 4K compatible TV or display monitor. This ensures compatibility with the latest super high resolution video formats. 4K pass through is supported by the receiver's HDMI 1-4 inputs and both HDMI outputs.
    • 3D-Ready: The TX-NR929 's HDMI v.1.4 connections will accept 3D video from your 3D-ready Blu-ray player and output the video signal in 3D to your 3D-ready flat-panel television.
    • Deep/x.v.Color Support: The Onkyo receiver supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television. The receiver's main HDMI monitor output supports the ARC function, while the sub HDMI monitor output does not.
    • Auto Lip-Sync: The Lip-Sync function can automatically synchronize HDMI audio and video that has gotten out of sync due to the complex digital video processing being performed by your HDMI-compatible TV. With HDMI Lip-Sync, the audio delay required to synchronize the audio and video is calculated and applied automatically by the AV receiver.

Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K Upscaling: The Onkyo TX-NR929 utilizes a Marvel Qdeo Video Chip for 4K upscaling and video processing. The Marvel Qdeo Video Chip produces quiet and natural video, free from noise and artifacts. Analog component/composite video signals are converted to HDMI, so you only need one cable to connect the receiver to your TV. 480i video from the receiver's component/composite video inputs and any HDMI video signal can be scaled to a higher resolution set in the menu. You can set the AV receiver to upscale analog and HDMI video to 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, 4K, Auto (automatically scaled to the highest resolution supported by the display), or Through (no scaling). Upconversion and upscaling is only supported by the main HDMI video output.

HDMI Through: When enabling the HDMI Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "on" or in "standby" both audio and video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver HDMI monitor output. You can select between 3 HDMI Through functions modes.

    • Auto: Detects the signal and automatically selects the input sources.
    • Source: Selects the input source (BD/DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT, Game, PC, Aux, TV/CD) for which the HDMI Through function in enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "standby" mode.

Front-Panel HDMI (MHL) Port: The front-panel HDMI port is designed for the connection of select mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL standard. Simply plug your MHL compatible smartphone into the receiver's front-panel HDMI port using the HDMI cable that is included with your mobile phone. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images on your HDTV with up to 7.1 channels of surround sound. Play, Stop, and other basic operations can be controlled from the AV receiver's remote control. Your connected smartphone is also recharged upon connection, and no separate power supply for the device is necessary while connected to the receiver.

InstaPrevue: InstaPrevue technology provides a live video thumbnail of the available content on your devices connected to the receiver via HDMI. As a result, you can preview audio/video streams coming from up to five HDMI inputs previously assigned to input selectors on your HDMI connected TV. Even with multiple components connected to receiver through HDMI, you can easily switch between inputs as their previews are displayed on a single screen on your television. You can even use the InstaPrevue feature for Picture-in-Picture. You can specify the number of preview thumbnails, as well as their positioning on-screen.

Note: If no video signal are present, the thumbnails will be filled in black. With 3D video signals, the image may not be properly rendered on the preview thumbnails of InstaPrevue.

Analog Video Inputs: The receiver features five composite video inputs (4 rear/1 front) and one composite video monitor output (480i only). There are also two component video inputs and one component video output (up to 1080p).

Picture Adjust: Using the Picture Adjust feature, you can adjust the picture quality and reduce any noise appearing on your TV screen.

    • Wide Mode: Auto, Full, Zoom, Wide Zoom, or 4:3.
    • Picture Mode: Custom (Brightness/Contrast/Hue/Saturation/Color Temp), Cinema (for movies), Game (for gaming), Standard (changes resolution), Bypass (no adjustment), ISF Day (for bright rooms), ISF Night (for dark rooms).
    • Picture Settings: Film Mode (video or film), Edge Enhancement (sharpens image), Noise Reduction (reduce noise).

A/V Sync Control: Occasionally, you may need to manually adjust the audio/video signals that are not properly synchronized manually. Typically when using a progressive scanning DVD player. You can correct this by delaying the audio; options are 0 (no delay) to 800 milliseconds, in 5 millisecond steps.

Separate Audio/Video Sources: You can listen to the audio of one input source while watching the video of another. This function takes advantage of the fact that when an audio-only input source (TV/CD, Phono, Tuner) is selected, the video input source remains unchanged.

    Convenience Features

Advanced On-Screen GUI w/ Setup Assistance: The Onkyo AV receiver offers an on-screen (GUI) menu system through its HDMI output. The simple on-screen display combines text and graphics that make setup and other operations extremely easy. The Quick Set-Up button on the remote or Home Menu button on the receiver's front-panel puts menus over the program you're watching to switch inputs or change a settings without interrupting your viewing. The initial setup assistant takes you step-by-step through speaker configuration, source connection, remote programming, and network connection. If your TV is connected to the composite video or component video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings.

Hidden Front-Panel Controls: The majority of the receiver's front-panel controls are hidden behind a manual fold-down panel. This gives the AV receiver a very clean, sleek look.

Multi-Source/Multi-Zone: The TX-NR929 offers three Zones; a multi-channel audio/video system in your main listening room (Main Zone), a stereo audio/video system in a second room (Zone 2), and another stereo audio only system in a third room (Zone 3).

    • Zone 2 (Audio/Video): Zone 2 allows playback of a separate audio/video source in 2-channel stereo in an additional room of your home. Zone 2 features line-level and speaker audio outputs. This way, Zone 2 can be powered by a separate amplifier (keeping 9.2ch playback in your main room) or by the TX-NR929's built-in amplifier (limiting the main room to 7.2ch). The Onkyo receiver also provides a Zone 2 HDMI output, so two different HDMI audio/video feeds can be sent to two different displays at the same time directly from the receiver (HDMI connected input sources only). HDMI Zone 2 will output up to 4k video and 2-channel audio for the HDMI input source selected. When powering Zone 2 with the receiver's built-in amplifier, listening modes that require surround back or front high/wide speakers are unavailable. You cannot power Zone 2 with the receiver's built-in amplifier, if you are bi-amping your front speakers. The volume of Zone 2 is controlled from the receiver when using the speaker outputs and from your add-on integrated amp when using the line-level outputs.
    • Zone 3 (Audio Only): Zone 3 allows playback of a separate analog source in 2-channel stereo in a third room of your home. Zone 3 features line-level outputs and speaker outputs. This way, Zone 3 can be powered by a separate integrated amp (keeping 9.2ch playback in your main room) or by the TX-NR929's built-in amplifier (limiting the main room to 5.2ch). When powering Zone 3 with the receiver's built-in amplifier, listening modes that require surround/surround back or front high/wide speakers are unavailable. You cannot power Zone 3 with the receiver's built-in amplifier, if you are bi-amping your front speakers. The volume of Zone 3 is controlled from the receiver when using the speaker outputs and from your add-on integrated amp when using the line-level outputs.

Note: *Compatible Sources - Only Tuner, analog, USB, and Network audio sources can be sent to Zone 2 and Zone 3. Zone 2 also supports HDMI audio/video sources. You must currently be listening to a USB device or Network audio source in the Main Zone to initially select USB or Network as a source in Zone 2 or Zone 3; then you can switch the Main Zone to any source you desire. To play Bluetooth audio in Zone 2/3, you must also have Bluetooth as the select source in the main zone. *Incompatible Sources - You cannot listen to different USB and Network content in separate Zones at the same time. Optical/coaxial digital audio sources are not output to Zone 2 or 3. You cannot output any video to 3.

Whole House Mode: The Whole House Mode is useful when you want to simply add extra background music to your home party. This mode allows you to enjoy the same stereo music as the main room in separate rooms (Zone 2/3). The Whole House Mode selects the same input source for Zone 2/3 as the main room. During the Whole House Mode, stereo playback is automatically selected for all zones. The Main Zone & Zone 2/3 will play at the same volume level.

Name Edit: You can enter a custom name for each individual input selector and radio preset for easy identification. When entered, the custom name will appear on the display. This function cannot be used for the Network and USB input selectors.

Display Dimmer + Screen Saver: The display brightness has three settings; Dim, Dimmer, and Normal. If there is no video signal on the current input source and no operation for a specific time, a screen saver automatically comes on. You can set the time (3min/5min/10min/off) until the screen saver activates itself. Once active, the screen saver will go off and the screen will return to its previous state if the AV receiver is operated in any way.

Timers: The receiver features a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Standby function.

    • Auto Standby: The AV receiver will automatically go into Standby mode, if there is no operation for 30 minutes with no audio/video signal input.
    • Sleep Timer: From the remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after as much as 90 minutes or as little as 10 minutes; choices are presented in 10 minute increments.

Hybrid Standby: The Onkyo TX-NR929 features "Hybrid Standby" mode to save energy and provide greater levels of convenience. Hybrid Standby Mode provides "HDMI through" functionality and maintains a local network connection while the receiver is essentially powered down. This allows the user to watch TV without turning the whole surround system on. Furthermore, when on Hybrid Standby, the home theater may be powered up from "cold" using the Remote Apps for iPod touch/iPhone and Android.

    Remote Control

Multibrand/Learning Remote (w/ Macros): The supplied wireless remote is a multibrand/learning remote. The remote is pre-programmed to operate popular brands of equipment including DVD players, DVD recorders, Blu-ray players, VCRs, TVs, Cable boxes and Satellite receivers. Also, the remote can learn up to 32 commands from infrared remotes of other components. You can sequentially operate Onkyo components via simple commands from a single-button press, using the included IR remote control. There are three Activities buttons (My Movie/My TV/My Music) that can be programmed to perform a sequence of commands with just one button press; each macro button can perform up to 32 commands.

HDMI Control: This function allows CEC-compatible components (Toshiba REGZA-LINK TV/Sharp TV) or RIHD-compatible components connected via HDMI to be controlled with the TX-NR929. The AV receiver offers the following CEC HDMI controls.

    • The AV receiver will enter Standby mode when the power of the TV is turned to Standby.
    • You can set on the menu screen of the TV to either output the audio from the speakers connected to the AV receiver, or from the speakers of the TV.
    • It is possible to output the audio/video from the antenna or from the input jack of the TV from the speakers connected to the AV receiver.
    • Input to the AV receiver can be selected with the remote controller of the TV.
    • Operations such as volume adjustment or similar for the AV receiver can be performed from the remote controller of the TV.

Onkyo Remote App (for Apple iOS & Android): The Onkyo Remote App (from iTunes Apps & Google Play) allows you to operate the Onkyo AV receiver from your Apple iOS (4.3+) or Android (2.1+) device, using your home's wireless network. The Onkyo Remote App lets you access Internet Radio stations, AM/FM stations, DLNA content, and Input sources right from your mobile device. Content information will be displayed on the device's touchscreen. You also get to adjust tone controls, listening modes, and speaker volume from your compatible Apple iOS or Android device. The Onkyo Remote App even allows you to wirelessly stream audio stored on your Apple iOS or Android device to the Onkyo AV receiver and lets you control audio output for up to 3 Zones. The Onkyo AV receiver and your compatible Apple iOS or Android device must be connected to the same home network.

Excellent product, Better than I imagined. I hooked it up to a Klipsch RF-52 surround system and the sound is loud, clear and phenomenal. Currently using as a 5.1 system but plan on adding to make 7.2. Also used two of the channels for outside speakers which also work great.
    Pros:
    Easy to set up
    Cons:
    None for me

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Top notch receiver! Totally worth the money. Sound quality is simply amazing! Speakers are totally configurable. I went in for the option of 5.1 plus Front speakers Bi-amp Plus Zone 2 speakers. My front speakers are full size Martin Logan's which I have been having for about 5 years now. After bi-amping the bass feels much richer and louder. On th epicture side-regular Dish image quality appears enhanced. I think there is a good up scaling program that converts the 720p TV transmission to 1080p. I use both HDMI's interchangeably as I have a drop down screen in front of my TV for projecting movies. Both work great. Another great feature is the remote app on my Iphone- I can now control music in all zones from anywhere in the house! Easy to set up. Networked amp lets me stream music from my iphone playlist seamlessly.
    Pros:
Superb Sound quality, Flexible speaker configuration, Great HDMI upscaling, iPhone app, nice clean and rich bass.
    Cons:
I cannot play digital source music in Zone 2 (but that is a universal problem across all amps)

I have gone from Denon AVR-1991 to Onkyo TX-NR626, then upgraded TX-NR626 to TX-NR929 (thank you Crutchfield to make this happen). I am not an expert in AV electronics yet I am knowledgeable. I do computers for living ;-) Anyway, this unit supersedes my expectations and meets all my demands. It's totally worth double the price of TX-NR626. I am happy with this receiver. It powers 2 x PolkAudio TSi400 (bi-amp front), 2 x PolkAudio TSi300 (surround), 1 x TSx250C (center), 1 x PSW125 (sub) and 1 x PSW110 (sub).
    Pros:
active and efficient cooling, consistent power, lots of processing power == speed, lots of fine-tuining and customization settings, easy to use
    Cons:
limited options for multi-zone outputs (only analog signals can be send to zones 2 &3)

    Nice but with some issues

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well returned a Denon because it had lip sync issues... The sound was slower than the video and that was with no delay. Crutchfield quickly and without issue returned it, and I went with the Onkyo. Much nicer unit thats for such.

Love the power and the ability to select what sound and settings I want, not just what it tells me I can have, like some others.

It is really nice to use my phone or tablet for the remote. Kinda odd though that the app has a few pop ups asking if I want to connect, when its already connected and cant select OK, so have to just live with the pop up in 1/4 of teh screen for about a min till it just goes away.

But the app is really nice in that you can select Bass and treble and front volume up/dn, or sub up/dn. etc all without going in to settings and such. Its just in buttons on the remote app.

Now the issue I have. I have a 7yr Panasonic plasma that worked great with the Denons I have had. The tv has a easy to access setting called home theater, and then the stereo is on, and HDMI is connected, hitting that button, ment that the TV volume pushed through and controlled the stereo volume. This was nice cause when watching Sat and using the sat remote to controil TV volume and sat channels and TV on/off, etc. It did it all. Then put a Blueray in and Denon turns on and changes input to correct source and thern on Sat remote hit Home Theater on tv setting and now the same remove controls the Stereo volume.

    Pros:
Sound quality! Options/controls Remote APP is very robust 7.2 in main room, and 2 other rooms also get different sources as wanted Bluetooth Pandora
    Cons:
Glitchy when trying to use pass through HDMI control (think its called CEC) is not very funtional

    Unbeliviable Sound Quality

Written By CraigMac, 13903 on Saturday, April 26, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far I have only had this receiver for about a month and am still figuring things out with it as there is so many options and functions to use. I am running Polk (2) Fronts RTi-A9, (2) Mids/Rear/Sides RTi-A7, (2) Rears RTi-A5, Center Channel RTi-A6, and due to space in my current home I can not add as planned an additional set of RTi-A7 speakers. I am coming from a Yamaha RX-V3300 Receiver which was being used as a 5.1 Setup and still works great. The Onkyo TX-NR929 that I have purchased definitely has the same quality of sound if not even better which I was very surprised at for the cost being so low on the Onkyo for that grade of quality. Running my setup only at 7.1 for the time being, the sound quality for movies in unreal and amazing. I have never enjoyed these speakers so much as I do now. Note that the Onkyo is a tad bigger in its casing as I was unable to fit inside my stereo rack but its a purchase I am thrilled to have made. So far no issues. Also, the reason I went with Crutchfield is there expertise, I called many of times discussing my setup and what I plan to do soon with building a 9.2 or 11.2 setup and spoke to many different sales people. Here is what I think Crutchfield Managers should also know in all those people I spoke to they all had the same answers even if they had a tad different idea or verbiage. That to me shows there teams know what they are talking about and I appreciate that very much. Thank you Crutchfield!!!
    Pros:
Amazing Sound, Power, and setup. Setup is not that hard at all just follow prompts pretty much. I know many of us read reviews and go by what we hear and trust me this is a great product. I have never heard all the sounds as I do now from this Receiver!!!
    Cons:
Case was just a tad too big to fit in my stereo stand, and maybe that some of the pass through functions are a tad difficult to figure out, but that is all I can say so far for a con. Sorry but this is a great product.

This item has a ton of capability, but the documentation is confusing. As software engineer I can generally configure all my electronics. I bought this unit to use the multi-room monitor/audio to pass sound through for a second room while watching the monitor output. I have been unable to configure this. I can only get audio out to the TV in the second room and not the speakers.

Upgraded from Onkyo TX-NR515. I really wanted to move up to 9.2 receiver. Read great reviews on this one and with it being on sale decided to buy it. You would be hard pressed to find something with the features this receiver has at a comparative price. Having THX and isf certification is something I wanted to get and this receiver provides it. Has plenty of power to drive my current 7.2 system before i add two speakers to go to 9.2. There are plenty of sound options to choose from so you can really tailor the sound to your preferences. I am just as happy listening to music sources as I am watching movies. The internet capability, bluetooth , and wireless are also valuable features. It is also nice to use the Onkyo app to control the receiver from your tablet or phone. In closing , i am very satisfied with my purchase so far.
    Pros:
great sound, zone2/3 options, plenty of power, 9.2 capability
    Cons:
    none so far

Picture quality is great, it really up converts everything. TV thru HD cable box is much clearer. Streaming Netflix thru my blue ray player is excellent. I have not really tested the audio, I also upgraded my speakers to Martin Logan ESL and have a 72 hours break in period before pumping up the volume. I replaced Onkyo sr806, that was about 5 years old and hdmi inputs were beginning to failing. The difference is amazing. Will add to the review when the speakers are broken in. Expecting the audio to be just as good as the video.
    Pros:
    Excellent up convert
    Cons:
No Bluetooth button on remote .

Two day free delivery from Crutchfield, awesome. This unit is an upgrade to my Yamaha V1900 which died just 5 years young. I spent a lot of time looking at models from Yamaha, Denon, Marantz, and Onkyo all in a similar price range. After discussing my choices with an Onkyo rep I chose the NR929. Prior to the units arrival I downloaded the User Manual from Onkyo's website and printed it out so that I could review the set up procedure and various new features that my Yamaha did not have. The unit arrived very well packaged and undamaged. Installation was very easy and quick. I have a dedicated theater room with a built-in access door to the back of my electronics cabinet which I highly recommend for ease of making connections between speakers and components. I chose the quick setup option and unit fired up without a hitch. After that I ran the Audyssey setup, which was also extremely easy to use, now my theater puts out incredible sounding audio for movies, music, and radio. Way to go Onkyo, I'm now a big fan. I would have given 4 stars for not having a back-lit remote but the unit itself is spectacular. I keep a small flashlight handy when I need to find or read the button titles, other than that I programmed my Logitech Harmony 550 remote which does 90% of what I need.
    Pros:
Ease of set up, incredible sound, seamless HDMI switching, great product design.
    Cons:
No printed manual and especially a back-lit remote. For the money, you would think that these would be standard offerings.

    Incredible Receiver

Written By Gary, Rogers, AR on Thursday, February 06, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've bought this receiver to replace an Onkyo TX-NR609 that was doing it's job extremely well, but wanted to be able to run 9 channels and the additional power. This receiver has more than enough inputs, and setup was extremely easy with the onscreen menu. There still some nerd knobs i'm finding to tweak the experience, and loving the additional control this receiver provides.
    Pros:
Convenient layout for inputs and outputs. Easy setup and tweaking through the onscreen menus.
    Cons:
Wished it had apple airplay. Also the bluetooth connectivity requires you be within 2 ft of the receiver which is kind of inconvenient if you want to play from your phone while working around the house.

GReat wifi-enabled 3 zne receiver. I uuse it to power the downstairs family room, the upstairs livingroom, and the back yard speakers. Great sound - easy to use.
    Pros:
The remote control app lets me turn on any zone from anywhere in the house as well as control the volumn, etc. The built inn wifi means I can stream internet radio, iTunes, etc. My old receiver was much more difficult to use and control.
    Cons:
The remote supplied with the unit isn't always easty to see, and not all of the buttons light up. However, I just run the unit from my iPad or phone, so that seems a reasonable workaround.

    Another Great Receiver Onkyo !!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a replacement for a ten year old Onkyo TX-NR 800 that was working just fine, but needed a major tech upgrade.

The TX-NR929 was very easy to setup and configure, less than two from unboxing to enjoyable listening. I spent about one week doing final tweaking for each of the inputs and really like the receivers ability to remember the last settings used for each. Audyssey MultEQ XT32 makes speaker calibration a breeze and the addition of outstanding Wi-Fi and Bluetooth reception have further extended my listening pleasure.
    Pros:
Too numerous to list This is an outstanding receiver for the money.
    Cons:
Back light for total front panel and lighted input switches would be a great addition, along with a printed owners manual.

    Great Receiver

Written By Rupe, Shalimar, FL on Thursday, December 26, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Except as noted with the users manual below, the setup is straight forward and the microphone makes tuning the system for one's room quite easy. The sound is great! I was able to notice use of the front high speakers with the first movie I watched.
    Pros:
Sound quality, microphone to tune the speakers for one's room, abundance of options.
    Cons:
The users manual section on setting up a 9.1 or 11.1 system could be better written. It did not explain that "powered" speakers means "independently powered" (like a subwoofer); this delayed setup of the receiver in the 9.1 configuration. Doesn't blank the display as the TX-NR905 does when watching TruHD movies; it is a nice feature to eliminate distracting light sources.

    Is this receiver able to 4 K UPSCALE? [ Doug  Jul 13, 2014 ]
    1 answer
    • I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The Onkyo TX-NR929 receiver will support 4K pass through and 4K upscaling. From the website: 4K Pass Through: 4K Pass Through allows the Onkyo TX-NR929 to receive ultra high-definition resolution video and pass the video signal to a 4K compatible TV or display monitor. This ensures compatibility with the latest super high resolution video formats. 4K pass through is supported by the receiver's HDMI 1-4 inputs and both HDMI outputs. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy Staff  Jul 15, 2014 ]
Can you send HDMI audio sources to Zone 2? [ Gary123  Jun 26, 2014 ]
    4 answers
    • In most cases that would be a NO. You need to check with the user manual of the receiver in question if digital signals from HDMI / Fiber Optic/ Coaxial sources will play in Zone 2. On most consumer amplifiers Zone 2 will not pass the multi channel digital sources through to the 2 channel Zone 2 output. Some receivers such as ones made by Lexicon do, however, have the appropriate conversion technology to accomplish this task. But you need to read the users manual, in particular, about how Zone 2 / 3 / 4 etc. functions. If you are using a Blu-ray with HDMI, see if you can assign an analog input to that HDMI input you are using. In the receiver menus it would show something like HDMI 1 us L/R Analog input CD or AUX1 AUX2 or whatever. Then also connect L/R from your Blu-ray player to the Left/Right inputs that you set up on your receiver. This requires your Blu-ray player to have left/right outputs and to have the Blu-ray analog output set to "2 channel L/R stereo". [ David   Jul 01, 2014 ]
    • not sure how to answer that. I have hooked up a set of speakers and a tv in zone 2 and get both tv signal and radio siginal in zone 2. The tv is via satellite by way of a hdmi. I also have the tv in zone 2 ran with a hdmi cable. Does that answer your question? [ WILLIAM   Jun 27, 2014 ]
    • Gary, I have only used it with one zone so far. I intend on sending audio to a second zone but I haven't set it up yet. [ DAVID   Jun 27, 2014 ]
    • Yes. I personally am using Zone 3 as my Front High Left and Right Speakers. All are fed from my HDMI connections to the satellite and DVD player. If you wish to use the Zones for other rooms that can be done as well. [ TERRENCE S   Jun 27, 2014 ]
Does MHL Compatibility mean AAC encoded 5.1 may be played back on this receiver? [ Troy  Jun 13, 2014 ]
    2 answers
    • I have mine hooked as a 5.1. There are specific instructions in the manual found online on Onkyo's website. I downloaded the pdf file and saved it so I can bring it up anytime for reference. There's a graphic indicating different configurations for speaker hookup including bi-amping. [ Robert   Jun 14, 2014 ]
    • I'm sorry, I am not knowledgeable enough to answer your question. I bought it for it's 4 ohm stability. [ ROBERT   Jun 14, 2014 ]
If I get the acoustimass 10 series (5.1) with this receiver, would I be able to add my polk floor standing speakers as front mains (to be bi amped) with the Bose? Are there any compatibility issues with Bose speakers as the 5.1 and a separate floor pair to make it a 7.1 (I realize bi amping those fronts would utilize all the 9 powered outs) [ Shakejaz  Apr 23, 2014 ]
    1 answer
    • I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: You could do that, but the speakers aren't voice matched so I'm not sure how good or bad it might sound. The floor standing speakers may end up "swallowing up" the sound from the smaller Bose speakers particularly the center channel. It would work, but there's better options. For example, if you have the Polk TSx330 floor standing speakers the Polk TSx250 center channel would be a great match and then the Polk TSx110 bookshelf speakers for the surrounds. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy Staff  Apr 24, 2014 ]
Can you connect to outdoor wireless speakers via the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth function? Thanks [ Pako Tamayo  Apr 22, 2014 ]
    6 answers
    • I have not tested this yet. [ SOMPHONG   Apr 24, 2014 ]
    • Yes for BT and a qualified yes for WiFi. There are RCA jack outputs on the receiver that can be used with a WiFi system that is self-powered and has its own transmitter and receiver. Even though the receiver may be on the same WiFi, it does not transmit to speakers via that means. The receiver's WiFi capability is there to receive Internet radio, music from a DLNA device on the same network, and firmware updates. As for BT, you can pair up to 10 compatible Bluetooth devices and stream high quality wireless audio using the built-in Bluetooth 2.1. [ Don   Apr 24, 2014 ]
    • Sorry, I can't answer this question, I have never tried this. [ Robert   Apr 23, 2014 ]
    • I do not know the answer to this. I have read the manual many times and have never noted that the unit can broadcast a signal. You can play from a blue tooth device and you can certainly connect to the internet. The internet connection is very nice. [ DENNIS   Apr 23, 2014 ]
    • So far in my experience the WiFi and bluetooth are just for streaming music to the receiver and not out. Also the Bluetooth is not compatible with iPhone/iPad for streaming. [ CHRISTOPHER J   Apr 23, 2014 ]
    • If you are asking if from receiver to speakers without wire... no... If you are asking bluetooth or wifi in to receiver out to wired speakers. Yes... [ robert   Apr 23, 2014 ]
When Bi Amping the front main speakers, how many surround channels are available, 5 or 7? [ Chris  Feb 19, 2014 ]
    5 answers
    • 7 channels are viable. Th-nr929 dont need bi amping. He have enough power. [ ZARKO   Feb 19, 2014 ]
    • I only ran a straight 7.1 with the wires per ran for 9.1. I did not run any second zones. [ CHRISTOPHER J   Feb 19, 2014 ]
    • Chris; I am Bi Amping my system and there are 7.1 channels available. Each front speaker takes 2 of the 11 available. It sounds great. [ DENNIS   Feb 19, 2014 ]
    • Hi Chris, I just went by the instructions in the manual to Bi-Amp my front mains. The tweeters were connected to the Front Hi posts and the mids were connected to the Front side posts. Therefore I still have my 7.2 surround but I've lost the ability to add additional Hi and Side front speakers. There are still one set of posts left that can be used for remote speakers but I don't have that requirement nor how to set them up. I wish you the best of luck. BTW, I love the Droid app that allows me to use my phone and tablet to control the receiver. I always have a problem hearing dialog sometimes but now I can turn just the center channel volume up or down remotely whenever I want. Clayton K [ CLAYTON   Feb 19, 2014 ]
    • When bi-amping is used, the AV receiver is able to drive up to a 7.1 speaker system in the main room. You must set the speaker setting to enable bi-amping. [ TERRENCE S   Feb 19, 2014 ]
If configured for multi-room setup, powering zones 2 and 3, which home theater speakers stop being powered? Does the receiver stop powering both back surround speakers (leaving 5.2 in the home theater)...that seems like the most logical choice? [ Marker  Dec 30, 2013 ]
    3 answers
    • Each zone, when powered, shuts off an different set of home theater speakers. Zone2 - Front High and Zone3 - Front Wide, Back Surround are not shut off as with older Onkyo Receivers. [ Robert   Jan 02, 2014 ]
    • The back surround speakers will stop being powered in lew of the zone 2 or 3 or both [ CHRISTOPHER   Dec 31, 2013 ]
    • My understanding from Onkyo is that if you power zone 2 and 3 it leaves you with 5.1 in the main room. I personaly did not run zone 2 and 3. I ran 7.1 in my main room and plan on upgrading to 9.1 in a few months. [ CHRISTOPHER J   Dec 30, 2013 ]
