Our take on the Onkyo TX-SR505

by Dave Bar
Onkyo

Receivers: Your ticket to sensational sound

Your receiver powers your speakers and lets you connect and select your entertainment sources. But a great receiver does a lot more — it ignites your emotions. From the passion of a favorite musical artist, to the crossfire of a super-charged movie soundtrack, to the intensity and immersion of a fast-paced video game, your receiver is the key to experiencing and enjoying it in full.

The Onkyo TX-SR505 delivers seven channels of high-current power and all the surround sound processing you need for a thrilling home theater experience. Beefy Onkyo construction ensures consistently pure, powerful, and dynamic sound.

1080p-compatible HDMI switching
If you've got an HDTV with only one HDMI input, you'll appreciate this receiver's 1080p-compatible HDMI switching. Hook up your HD satellite receiver and high-def disc player via HDMI and switch between them, while maintaining pristine picture quality for both.

Advanced auto setup tailors sound to your room
For the most accurate home theater sound possible, the 'SR505 includes Audyssey 2EQ, a sophisticated speaker calibration system. Using the included microphone, the receiver analyzes sound from two different listening positions, then automatically adjusts level, equalization, and delay settings for each of your speakers. You'll get clear, precise, natural sound that's optimized for your room.

Features

WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology): This technology uses low-negative-feedback circuit topology for accurate signal reproduction, improved dynamic signal-to-noise ratio, and better delivery of power peaks.

HDMI Switching: The TX-SR505 has two HDMI inputs and one HDMI output for connecting DVD players, HDTV set-top boxes, and other video components to your TV or projector. The receiver's HDMI circuitry is a switching pass-through design, and will pass video and 2-channel (stereo) digital audio through to the TV. However, if you want to listen to the soundtrack through the speakers connected to your receiver, you must make a separate analog audio connection (for stereo listening) or digital audio connection (for Dolby Digital 5.1 surround). The HDMI inputs are compatible with DVI, so TVs and displays with a DVI input can be connected by using an HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable, along with audio cables. The receiver uses HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection), so only HDCP-compatible components can display the picture. The HDMI inputs can accept and switch 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p signals to a TV, monitor, or projector. Each of the HDMI inputs can be assigned to any of the three rear panel A/V inputs (DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT).

Component Video Switching: In addition to HDMI, composite video, and S-Video switching, this unit can switch between high definition component video sources. There are 3 component video inputs and 1 component video output. The component video inputs and outputs have a bandwidth of 5Hz to 50MHz.

Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs): To decode and playback high-resolution recordings, this receiver is equipped with 192kHz/24-bit DACs.

Automatic Speaker Setup: With the supplied speaker setup microphone, the Audyssey 2EQ Automatic Speaker Setup function can measure and correct for the acoustics in your listening room. The speaker setup function measures the test tone output by each speaker and automatically determines the number of speakers connected, their sizes, crossover frequencies, and the distance from each speaker to the listening position. The supplied microphone is approximately 2" in diameter, 1" tall, and has a 19.5' cable that plugs into the front of the receiver. There is a threaded insert on the bottom of the microphone so it can be mounted on a tripod for accurate listening position placement. Three listening position measurements are taken, one primary and two secondary, to optimize the surround effect for a broad area. If you wish to setup the speakers manually, you can follow the procedure for Speaker Configuration.

Speaker Distance: The distance from your listening position to each speaker can also be set manually. The front speaker distance can be set from 1 to 30 feet in 1-foot increments. The center and subwoofer settings can be up to 5 feet more or 5 feet less than the distance you set for the front speakers (30 feet max). The settings for the surround left, surround right, surround back left, and surround back right speakers are each individually adjustable, and they may be up to 5 feet more or 15 feet less than the distance you set for the front speakers (30 feet max).

Speaker Levels: You can manually adjust the level of individual speakers between -12dB and +12dB; -15dB to +12dB for the subwoofer.

Double Bass: You can enhance the bass output by activating the Double Bass function. This function allows you to feed bass frequencies to the front left and right channels and to the subwoofer. Double Bass can be set only when the subwoofer is set to On and the front speakers are set to Large.

Adjustable Crossover: This receiver has a built-in high-pass crossover for any of the speakers set to Small. This setting is available when the subwoofer is set to Yes. The frequencies that you can choose from are 40, 50, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, and 200 Hz. Frequencies lower than the set crossover point are output by the subwoofer.

Equalizer: The EQ function offers three options:

  • Off: flat response
  • Audyssey: adjusts the frequency response of all speakers to correct the effects of room acoustics, based on measurements taken using the included microphone
  • Manual: the five band equalizer can be adjusted independently for each of the seven full range speaker channels (front, center, surround, and surround back), the EQ bands are centered at 80, 250, 800, 2500, and 8000 Hz (subwoofer EQ bands are centered at 40, 80, and 160 Hz) they are adjustable from -6 to +6 dB in 1 dB increments

iPod Compatible: The DS-A1 or DS-A2 Remote Interactive Dock for iPod (item #'s 580DSA1 and 580DSA2) provide an interface between an iPod digital media player and Onkyo TX-SR505. Once the iPod is docked you can control basic functions such as volume control, play, stop, and skip via the Onkyo system's RI-compatible wireless remote control. The dock also charges the battery in the iPod, and allows you to view digital photos and video on an Onkyo home theater system.

Assignable Digital Inputs: The TX-SR505 has 4 assignable digital audio inputs (2 optical/2 coaxial) allowing you to specify which input source is connected to which digital input jack.

Multi-Channel Input: The receiver is equipped with a 7.1 multi-channel input for compatibility with external decoders or high resolution audio players such as DVD-Audio or SACD. The input consists of left front, right front, center, subwoofer, left surround, right surround, left surround back and right surround back RCA inputs.

Audio Sync: Occasionally the audio and video signals are not properly synchronized, typically when using a progressive scanning DVD player. You can correct this by delaying the audio; options are 0 (no delay) to 100 milliseconds, in 20 millisecond steps.

B Speaker Outputs: The B speaker outputs can be used to power speakers in a different room, creating a second zone. When the B speakers are turned on, the main room is limited to 5.1 channel output.

Direct Mode: This mode delivers pure sound with minimum sound quality adjustment and filtration. The sound recorded for the right and left front channels is output to the right and left front speakers only and not output to the subwoofer, center, or rear speakers.

Listening Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of listening modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your audio and video software. The listening modes include:

  • Direct: audio from the input source is output directly with minimal processing
  • Stereo: sound is output from the front left and right speakers and subwoofer
  • Mono: monaural sound is output from the front left and right speakers and subwoofer
  • Multi-channel: 7.1-channel analog input

    • Mono Movie: suitable for old movies or other mono sources
    • Orchestra: for classical or operatic music
    • Unplugged: for acoustic instruments, vocals, and jazz
    • Studio-Mix: suitable for rock or pop
    • TV Logic: adds realistic acoustics to TV shows
    • All Ch Stereo: ideal for background music
    • Full Mono: all speakers output the same sound in mono

Dolby Pro Logic II & IIx Music Modes: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II or IIx Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:

  • Panorama: broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu
  • Dimension: allows you to move the sound field forward or backward
  • Center Width: allows you to adjust the width of the center channel

Center Image: In the DTS Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).

CinemaFilter: Using the CinemaFilter you soften overly bright movie soundtracks. Movie soundtracks are typically mixed for a large theater (relative to your home theater) with lots of soft seats and thick curtains on the walls. Home theater settings often lack these high frequency absorbing wall treatments, making the soundtrack sound too bright. CinemaFilter accounts for this and for many movies sounds more natural at home.

Late Night Feature: The Late Night feature limits the dynamic range of Dolby Digital recordings. Limiting the dynamic range makes it easier to find a volume that ensures the quiet sounds are not too quiet and the loud sounds are not too loud for night time listening. This allows you to comfortably listen to without the need to constantly adjust the volume to keep from waking family/neighbors. The choices are: Off, Low, and High.

Note: This feature only works with Dolby Digital Encoded software and the depth of the feature will vary based on the individual software package.

Sleep Function: From the remote, you can set the unit to automatically turn off after as much as 90 minutes or as little as 10 minutes; choices are presented in 10 minute increments.

Input Display: The name displayed for most inputs is fixed (DVD, VCR/DVR, etc), but the Tape and CBL/SAT input displays can be changed. Tape can be changed to MD, CDR, or Dock and CBL/SAT can be changed to Dock. These settings also effect the Remote Interactive (wired remote) codes output to other connected components.

Note: Only one of the input labels can be changed to Dock.

Display Dimmer: The display brightness has three settings; Dim, Dimmer, and Normal.

Remote Control

Multi-brand Remote: The supplied RC-681M wireless remote is a multi-brand remote. The remote is pre-programmed to operate Onkyo components, as well as other popular brands of equipment, including DVD players, satellite receivers, cable boxes, VCRs, and televisions.

Input and Output Notes

Multi-channel Input: Labeled DVD, the TX-SR505 has a multi-channel input for connecting a DVD player, a high resolution audio player (such as a DVD-Audio or SACD player), or an external decoder. The input consists of left front, right front, center, subwoofer, left surround, right surround, left surround back and right surround back RCA inputs. You can also connect a component using only left and right audio jacks, if desired. Additionally there are composite video, S-video, and component video jacks for this input. Note: This DVD input is included in the total of 6 A/V inputs.

Headphone Output: This receiver has a standard 1/4" headphone output on the front panel. The speaker outputs are muted when headphones are plugged in.

Speaker Outputs: There are color-coded binding post connectors for the left front, right front, center, left surround, right surround, left surround back, and right surround back speakers. The binding posts are not 5-way because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs. There are spring terminals for the front B speakers.

RI Remote Control Jack: The 1/8" RI remote control jack allows you to connect this receiver to other compatible Onkyo components.

Great receiver & great deal!

Written By Kevin, Chareleston, WV on Thursday, April 17, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced an old Sony Pro Logic receiver when I purchased new TV from Crutchfield. Used the digital coaxial port from satellite receiver, & the optical port from PS3 to the Onkyo. Sound is perfect. Plenty of power for my 5.1 setup. Manual explains functions & set up well. The included microphone didn't set the sub-woofer & rear speakers with enough decibels during the auto setup function. I ran it 3 times with same results. I had to manually adjust speaker outputs via the menu. Once set up it seems to be trouble free. This receiver gives you quite a lot for the money. Add some speakers, sub-woofer, a digital audio source, & your all set for a quality home theatre package. I used a gift certificate from earlier purchase & got a great deal on this Onkyo. Also as usual Crutchfeild got the unit out to me quickly.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A very strong product for only having 75 watts/channel. Works well with music and is excellent with movies. The only down side is that there is a slight pop heard through the speakers when the receiver has turned on and sometimes when you are switching between modes. This can be annoying. Other than that, it's a great entry level receiver. It does get warm so be sure to give it lots of breathing room.

Great Product....learn about HDMI 1.3 first

Written By Digital LS, MI on Monday, March 24, 2008

HDMI 1.3 offers deeper HD video signals and also can pass
uncompressed audio singnals of the blu- ray disc ( only if that disc has that
stream on it) we are talking the new HD standards hear folks ......
Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD offer new high-fidelity audio features that require
HDMI for best results. Dolby Digital Plus (DD+), Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD
Master Audio....So first....at least one of these streams has to be encoded
on the disc....2, a/v reciever has to have that cirtification of that standard
wich this player has none.....This is why a person would want the all the
benefits of the HDMI 1.3 signal for top HD video at 1080p with deeper color
spectrum....however if the equipment cant process any of the above new
HI-def formats then....and only then would have to use the extra audio
hookup ( as in pertaining to this particular model). I wanted to explain this because too many people are not
rating this product correctly, not understanding the specs of HDMI 1.3 This
is a fantastic bargin.....actually, when hooked up appropriatly. The only
draw back is ....it could use more inputs....I agree there.

Onkyo TX-SR505

Written By Gene, SW Ohio on Saturday, February 02, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver has done almost everything I needed it to do - as well as offering superior audio quality. HDMI switching is a useful and welcome feature. The only reservation I have is that the HDMI audio is pass-through, and isn't captured and presented as surround sound by the receiver; separate audio hook-ups from the satellite tuner and DVD player are required. A minor inconvenience, but integrated signal treatment would have been better. I'd still buy it again.

Onkyo TX-SR505

Written By Jeff, Kikrland, WA on Monday, December 17, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Coupled with a pair of decent speakers such as Polk Monitor 50 and a subwoofer, and you've got the basis for some nice sound without breaking the bank. This receiver/amp is not hugely powered, so if you're looking for something earth-shattering this probably isn't the set for you.

Cons:
Audio on the HDMI inputs will not direct to the speakers connected to this receiver. This is more a limitation of the the HDMI spec than the receiver, but it is still somewhat confusing. Why in the world would I want the sound to show up at the end-point (TV) rather than the receiver? Anyways: The implementation of HDMI on this receiver is "HDMI passthrough" -- strictly for switching video sources.

Onkyo TX-SR505

Written By PphoenixX, San Juan, PR on Thursday, December 13, 2007

Excellent reciever for the price, my old Kenwood reciever died on me, and left me with 5.1 speakers with nothing else to do. Moved away and left the speakers and sub in the moving boxes. After a while decieded to buy a new reciever but wanted something better than my old Kenwood but didn't want to pay over $500 for it. A friend of mine was lookng at this model and after comparing feature by feature with competitive prices recievers decieded for this one. Ordered 2 of them (1 for each of us). SUPER FAST DELIVERY (Ordered on a thrusday almost 6:00 pm here in P.R. and recieved it Saturday at 3:00 pm) !YES I SAID SATURDAY! Setting was a brief, and sound setup easier. Jus pluged the mic and placed on the place where I used to watch movies and press enter on the remote, and waited until it finished. Nothing else to do. Very, very satiesfied with the product. Went back to Sorround Sound ( I missed so much) Even the announcement sound great. Loved the optional manual Bass & Trebble options for traditional (I Want MORE OF THIS NOW,manually, no controls kind of people). Second setup at my friends house was the same, he got 5.1 speakers and Brand New DVD-Recorder waiting for the arrival of this reciever to put good use to them. I highly recomend YOU reader, this reciever plus free S&H and 2 years warranty from ONKYO. I'm very happy (like Gollum havinf back his Precius ring). Enjoy it.

HDMI

Written By manncer, Delmar,NY on Tuesday, November 06, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Warning: Not really HDMI. I am really angry at myself for not reading reviews, before buying. HDMI only handles video, you still have to hook up seperate connections for audio. Why bother with HDMI if you need to hook up additional wires to hear sound through the speakers.

Excellent at what it does... but

Written By xandra, New York on Saturday, September 01, 2007

All in all this is a great receiver for the price. Sounds great, reliable in use.
PROS:
A truly Excellent Manual makes for Easy setup & customization. BUT the tight spacing on back (and perhaps terminal style) made attaching speakers extremely awkward.

It's pretty easy to use but I wish there was a way to hide some of the available listening modes -- you have to scroll thru all to get to the one you want.
The remote at first seemed complex but once I got used to it, really handles the basics well.

Cons:
INPUTS: Like most receivers could use more inputs. In reality there are only 4 digital inputs and if your components don't have the perfect mix (2 coax, 2 optical - good luck). This is because HDMI inputs require additional audio connection. (what's the point of HDMI if added connections required? - and why would I route video thru a receiver only to route it back to the TV?) There's also a multichannel direct input from DVD which I use to connect a 2nd DVD player).

TUNER: in brief the Tuner is terrible. The supplied AM antenna only received ONE! channel without static. FM only faired a bit better. I tried a powered AM/FM receiver without luck, then tried an antenna off my old Dennon - this improved things slighty but it's still unacceptable.

In retrospect, I wish I'd bought a model which had onscreen display. But all in all this unit's very capable for the price - And most of my gripes apply to nearly all current receivers.

Great entry-level 7.1 receiver

Written By Daniel, Charlottesville, VA on Monday, July 23, 2007

This receiver provided a much needed boost in sound quality. Upgraded from an older Yamaha RX-V496 5.1ch receiver-- the boost in clarity was huge! The DSP modes are much better designed and spread the sound far better than my old unit. All in all, the unit performs and sounds superb. If you are on a budget, this unit is a great choice.
