Excellent value

I did some research here and there and saw that this receiver seemed to have the most bang for the buck. I've always had good service from Onkyo products and I've always had super service from Crutchfield. HDMI was important to me so this model fit my needs perfectly. Now just three cables (DVD,STB,and TV) are all that's needed to provide high quality, simple component connections! The receiver works great and has a ton of useful features. It gets a might warm though, and I've installed a cooling fan in my cabinet for a little extra help in air flow. My receiver has never had a overheating issue so this is probably not necessary, I just felt better adding the fan. Overall, I'm a very happy Onkyo/Crutchfield customer.

So Close...no cigar

OK, lets start with the good things.
- Good looking receiver
- Great sounding receiver
- HDMI switching (works great)
- deinterlacing if analog video signals to a 480p signal over HDMI
- on screen setup over HDMI
- Loudspeaker setup + microphone (works great for me)
OK, here are the reasons I gave this only 3 stars...(and I'm keeping the unit)
- Even though HDMI 1.1 supports 8 discrete audio channels...this receiver (674) will NOT handle 7.1 PCM over HDMI. (page# 31 in the manual) What does this mean to you? If you have a PS3, Blu-Ray, or HD-DVD player...you will NOT BE ABLE to get true 7.1 audio over HDMI. The only way you can get true 7.1 with this receiver is if your player has 7.1 seperate analog outputs. (8 rca connections) The receiver also cannot decode a 7.1 audio bitstream...so it's 8 analog inputs if you want true 7.1.
- The analong-only issue with zone 2. Kinda stinks.
- (Personal Experience) I upgraded from an Onkyo Onkyo TX-SV535. With the new 674, but SAME subwoofer, same SW cable, same everything...I'm now getting AM reception through my subwoofer. I can't imagine the receiver would be responsible...but it's the only thing that changed in the setup. Maybe the AM circuit too close to the subwoofer lines on the circuit board?
So close but no cigar, because with a few more little things, this receiver would be SWEET. However, it's only decent. Sounds great, but doesn't easilly meet your 7.1 needs.

Very good receiver with a few shortcomings
Written By

Overall I have been very satisfied with this receiver. I use it to manage my A/V setup which includes a DVD player, HD tv recorder, VCR, video games, and video MP3 player, all connected to plasma HDTV.
Setup was quick and accurate. The menus are not the most intuitive, but they arent a stumbling block either. The manual is a little unclear in spots, but the info is there is you take the time to read it. The receiver sounds very good (through my JBL small speaker 7.1 system) and offers a lot of features for the price. The remote is fine if you plan to use it, though I added the receiver to my programmable universal remote. Once the system is set up intitially, its doubtful that most users will need to do major change-ups via the remote during day to day use, so all of the necessary functions are easily accessible on the remote.
There are a few minor things that could enhance the unit. First, it would be nice to have customizable names for the various inputs. Its not a big deal for me, but sometimes visitors/babysitters/relatives might find the generic input names unhelpful. The other issue is that the HDMI output sends a slightly inferior signal compared to the component. Video is a little brighter and has slightly more vivid color when I use the component output to my TV compared to the HDMI. I cant say for sure if the reciever is the problem (I guess it could possibly be the HDMI cable) but I have read a few other user comments that notice the same tendency. The difference is not big enough to be a major downside for me, but it's there.
Overall, a great unit: well-built, good feature/price ratio, and sounds excellent.

Great unit!
Written By

I've had the 674 hooked up for a couple days now. It sounds great and is a great improvement of the Sony I'd had since early 5.1 days. The 674 has much better separation and I hear more sounds than before.
The only reason I gave this unit a 4 is because I can't get Dobly-d sound through HDMI from the Moto 6416 stb. This may be an issue of the moto but can't prove it because I don't have another HDMI component.

Major HDCP Issues
Written By
arlingtonian, VA on Thursday, December 28, 2006
The sound is great for a receiver in this price range, but I haven't had any luck using the HDMI inputs. I have encountered HDCP copy protection issues with every source device I've tried so far. I've had no luck with my Denon DVD-1930CI, or Sony DVP-NS75H. The audio is fine, but the video is blocked. I've used multiple HDMI cables that work when connected directly to the TV, but still no luck in running them through the receiver.
I'll still give it 3 stars for sound quality and overall ease of use, but it's incompatibility with every HDMI device I own is a bit of a disappointment.
