Our take on the Onkyo UP-A1

by Ralph Graves
Onkyo

It's about as simple as you can get. The UP-A1 iPod dock has just a single universal cable to connect it to your compatible Onkyo receiver. That one cable sends music and video from your docked iPod or iPhone to your system. And the same connection draws power from your receiver for the UP-A1, so it can automatically charge your player without requiring a separate AC adapter.

Compatible with Universal Port (U-Port) Onkyo receivers. And you can control your player with your receiver's remote. With select receivers, the UP-A1 can generate an on-screen menu for browsing through your iPod's contents on your TV.

Highlights:

  • for all docking iPods, including 120GB iPod classic, curved screen iPod nano, and second generation iPod touch
  • compatible with iPhone and iPhone 3G
  • connects to compatible Universal Port (U-Port) Onkyo receivers
  • U-Port cable outputs audio and video from docked player and draws power from connected receiver
  • automatically charges iPod or iPhone while docked
  • allows iPod control with Onkyo receiver remotes
  • weight: 6 oz.
  • 3-5/16"W x 1-5/16"H x 3-3/4"D
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

See Pros/cons
Pros:
Can control iPod with stereo remote. Blends nicely with system.
Cons:
No on screen display. Does not have DAC converter bypass. Sometimes repeats tracks instead of advancing to next track. Expensive for it's limitations.

Onkyo UP-A1

Great quality Onkyo product!
Pros:
Simple and easy to use. Zone 2 on my receiver wouldn't allow me to play Pandora from my Blue Ray Receiver...but with Pandora and my iPhone no problem with the Onkyo UP-A1 dock. Great Product!
Cons:
You can't dock your iPhone with a case on it :( Also maybe a longer cord would be nice...

Onkyo UP-A1

Written By JoelL, Philadelphia, PA on Thursday, January 27, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have enjoyed the Onkyo UP-A1 so far. It was easy to set-up. My only complaint is that it is stated that the i-nan0 menu appears on the screen and such is not the case, much to my displeasure. After researching the situation with Crutchfield, i was informed that the problem is with the capability of my Onkyo receiver. When ordering the UP-A1 from Crutchfield, who knew my receiver, they said the menu would appear. Since i only use this product occasionally, it is not a big deal, but would have appreciated that knowledge before purchase.

Excellent attachment

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was thinking it would have the same display the that the iPod/iPhone uses, and
that I could also perhaps watch movies or other media stored on the iPhone.
This is not the case. A generic format is displayed on the TV to use the iPod
program on the iPhone only. It still allows you to view all your
song/artist/album albums and allows you all the capabilities you would normally
have, but you cannot view your album artwork on your TV while it plays.

The compatible controller is great. You can control all the features of the
iPod on your iPhone (iPod) very easily with the Receiver's remote control, which
is pretty nice.

You can play the audio through some other programs on your iPhone through the
Receiver directly using the controls on the iPhone itself while in the dock (you
cannot use the remote control in this instance - the remote & TV are only setup
to work with the iPod features). So, programs like Pandora will play through
the Receiver, which is GREAT! Seriously, being able to play Pandora is really
nice and perhaps one of my favorite features about this, and the audio quality
is stunning!

I did not and would not pay full price for the accessory. I mean, come on, this
is a solid percentage of the cost for an entire receiver, and it's just an
attachment. This type of price gouging is exactly why so many customers seek
cheap sketchy internet vendors. But...I still say I love the product - not the
price.

Easy to use, easy to install, great product

Written By withag, Houston, TX on Saturday, June 26, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased the ONKYO TXSR608 to upgrade to 3d and went ahead and included the ipod dock as well as the HD radio tuner. The entire combination was extremely easy to install. Crutchfield after purchase service was fantastic help when teaching me how to toggle between AM, FM, HD, and ipod. Plugged this in to the HD Tuner which plugged into the receiver. The receiver only has a slot for one but it's not a problem as the HD Tuner has a slot for the ipod dock to plug into so you're just piggybacking. I'm very happy with my entire purchase and would highly recommending you add this to your ONKYO receiver combination.

It is really easy to install, on my Onkyo 707, just plug and play. A great addition for us
ipod lovers. Now I can hook up in my car with an ipod ready car stereo, at home of
coarse and in my garage using an ipod ready radio, I'm set!

Works with 5th GEN Ipod NANO

Written By Kacz, Lemont, IL on Friday, September 25, 2009

I took a chance and bought this to go with my new Onkyo TX-SR607. The box says it's good for the 4th gen NANO. The people at the APPLE store said it should work with the 5th gen NANO as there are no docking pins that have been moved. This works great. I can even use the A/V remote to control the NANO.

Works really well. You need an ONKYO receiver with Universal Port for this to work.
