Mostly good!

Written By Art L, Syracuse, NY on Monday, June 09, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The adapter works well, but paging through its many options, and those of the internet services, is cumbersome at best. Audio quality is fine, as you would expect.
Pros:
It allowed me to go on-line with my home system and drop one of my XM subscriptions thereby saving some money and paying for itself.
Cons:
Difficult to navigate with my new ONKYO TX 8050.

Awesome Adapter

Written By Christopher M., Connecticut on Sunday, April 27, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received this free with Onkyo's TX-8050, but would have purchased it regardless. I could see where some people might get frustrated with this device. However don't let that deter you from buying it because it's well worth it. (Setup is easier via the smartphone app or through your computer. )

I paired this Onkyo's free iPhone app, v. 2. It's a lot easier than going directly through the TX-8050. To set it up via your computer look on the app when you start it up. It will give you an IP address. Use that number and type it into the web address bar. That will pull up the Onkyo wifi settings page. From there you can type in your music accounts and it will sync to your app as well as the TX-8050. You can also make other setting changes as well.

There are several music streaming services, which most need premium accounts to access.

As for the streaming, you can stream Pandora for free (the audio quality won't be the best) and vTuner works pretty well. I feel Spotify had the best audio quality for streaming services, but that's just my opinion. And you have to pay for the monthly service.

Other features on the app include controlling the input device (which you can customize and hide the ones you don't use); adjust the volume, mute, turn off the receiver as well as a few other options.

Overall its well worth it if you don't want to hardwire your network (i.e. via ethernet connection.) and want to enjoy online music and control basic functions of the TX-8050.
Pros:
Access to online streaming music services Ability to control basic functions of TX-8050 Small, indiscrete Blends well with unit, unobtrusive Provides signal strength of wifi connection (via display of TX-8050)
Cons:
Sometimes it takes a minute for the device to show up on smart phone. Restart of the app is sometimes required. If you're not tech savvy, it may take you a little time to set unit up.

Straight To The Heart

Written By Onkyo UWF-1 WI-FI USB Adapter, Matteson,ILL. on Sunday, November 24, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I plugged my newly arrived Onkyo UWF-1 WI-FI USB Adapter into the available USB slot in the rear of my Onkyo TX-NR 818 Reciever, followed the instructions and the music from my PC went straight to The Heart of my home theater and music center, the TX-NR818 reciever. The sound is clear as a bell even though I have a ordinary sound card, must be the components inside the Onkyo USB Adapter and the ever so sweet sounding TX-NR818. Thanks Crutchfield and Onkyo. I purchased my reciever prior to the WI-FI Adapter becoming free, Crutchfield promptly sent me one at no charge.
Pros:
What can I say that has not been said.

UWF-1 Wi-Fi USB Adapter

Written By DW, Maryland on Thursday, October 17, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased wireless adapter a couple weeks after getting Onkyo TX-8050.

Initial setup took a few minutes of "trial and error" - there's a few ways to initialize, and the instructions are not crystal clear, but not really a problem. After initial setup, signal from router on another floor is fine and strong. So far just using Pandora with one pre-existing account, but it only takes about 60 seconds to establish the wireless connection each session, and the signal remains strong for hours.

OK product

Written By Tom C, Kunkletown, PA on Tuesday, July 30, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Took some fiddling with my TX-NR717 receiver before it saw there was something in the USB port at all. Then it worked for about a week and then stopped working. I got it working again when I unplugged my receiver and plugged it back in. That was done so I could run an internet cable to the back of my cabinet. Then it worked again.
Pros:
Small size. Works well when it is working. Had no problems keeping my SiriusXM internet songs playing without buffering them more than once.
Cons:
Stopped working after a week. Then I need to unplug and plug in my receiver to get it to work again.

Does what it should

Written By John, Kansas on Saturday, July 27, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Gets a decent signal and works like it should. Our PS3 is right next to the Onkyo TX-NR717 receiver and both get the same signal strength from our Netgear router which is upstairs from them. Just plugged into the receiver and used the setup wizard to enter the router login password, etc. then it connected. I listen to Pandora every day with it.
Pros:
Works exactly as it should
Cons:
None

Onkyo wireless USB is great

Written By Randy, Orange, TX on Monday, July 22, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased one with my 809 receiver but it was accidentally broken off. So, I had to get another one. This allows me to control the receiver from my iPhone. It so allows for streaming music from any Internet service lime Pandora. It is great to have if you have it hooked to outdoor speakers because you can just pick up your phone and select music and control the volume from there.
Pros:
Easy set up. Just plug it in and log in to your wifi from the receiver screen.
Cons:
Not really any. I do wish they would incorporate it into the receiver and not be an additional option.

Onkyo UWF-1 Wi-Fi® USB Adapter

Written By Onkyo UWF-1 Wi-Fi® USB Adapter, Tallahassee, Florida on Monday, July 15, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Simple and easy to install. Great addition to a component system that is reliant on Internet access. I had hoped I would wireless connect to my PC to the receiver so I could get rid of the cable; I am still unsure about that capability.
Pros:
Installation is simply plugging the adapter to your receiver. Follow the set-up instructions. Using the adapter opened some new avenues for information sources and methodologies.
Cons:
The adapter could use better instructions for turning or modifying the system. Instructions for start-up just focuses on plugging the adapter to initially connect with the Internet. The adapter should also include the capability to wirelessly connect to your in-home Wi-Fi. If it had that capability, may use your computer to manipulate or modify the capabilities of the adapter.

Plug and play; instant contact with my wireless modem. An ethernet connection was not possible due to the modem being on a different floor from my Onkyo 414. This device made it so easy....the only criticism I would have is it does not allow me to access pictures and music from my computer...could this be operator error? Great product! Tech help outstanding....and thanks to Bryce with his help in selecting a receiver.

Onkyo UWF Wi-Fi USB adapter (AOK)

Written By Jerry, Castle Rock Co. on Saturday, May 25, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works just fine,I read a lot of negative reviews and almost didn't buy it.I knew Crutchfield would take it back if I didn't like it and because of the possible need for updates I went ahead and bought it.I installed it per instructions without any problems. My 717 didn't have any updates ,I will keep it just in case of future updates
Pros:
Foe me all of the negative reviews did not apply.
Cons:
Instructions did not state if it will work in the rear USB port.I used the front and my receiver showed F or R so I believe it will work in front or rear port you may want to follow up on that.

Written By mgforshort, Fullerton, CA on Sunday, April 21, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This dongle is hard to setup, an IT tech spent several hours to get it work because I couldn't. Once it was done we could listen to Pandora, but it is hard and painful to operate. It went back to Crutchfield for a future credit. I got another wireless transmitter/receiver kit for a little bit more money. That is easy to use, be it listening to Internet radio or sending music from the computer hard drive to the Onkyo 8050. The Onkyo dongle won't allow streaming from a hard drive, at least we couldn't figure it out without hours of work.
Pros:
It works when the setup is done
Cons:
It is hard to use and primitive. There are better ways to do this.

Product does not show MAC address on label or the box. I had a hard time getting this configured because I filter wireless devices by MAC address at my router. Menu's on Onkyo TX-NR515 were not very clear on reporting MAC address and it only showed the MAC address of the wired Ethernet port. I had to plug it into the USB port on my PC and find out the MAC address using ipconfig, etc. Also, reported signal strength was something like 20% at just 10 or 12 feet from my wireless access point.

Pros:

Cons:

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had it for a few weeks, it connected my 818 to my wifi network without any issues. However the signal reception was at 30% whereas computer, iphone, ipad all get excellent reception in the same area. Net services were very spotty; updating firmware was very painful. Chose to run a hardwire connection to my router and now net stations are GREAT and firmware updates are simple. Lookout, here comes another UWF 1 for sale. My advice is don't waste your time on this piece.
Pros:
Easy to hook up
Cons:
Very spotty reception. I can't recommend.

Got a bad one - new one works great

Written By Steve, West Virginia on Saturday, February 18, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this for my new 709 Onkyo receiver. First one connected well then had regular drop-outs making listening frustrating. Crutchfield sent me a new one. The new one has worked flawlessly despite reading signal strength at only 35%. No drop-outs for the last week. Love listening to internet radio options now through my incredible sounding receiver. Iamnot sure why others are having trouble setting this up to work. I am no IT guy and the connection was simple to make.
Pros:
Small, barely noticable on the front of my receiver, seems to work well
Cons:
Signal strength is low

A Great Little Receiver

Written By The Builder, ORLANDO FL USA on Friday, February 10, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works perfectly with my Onkyo TX8050 receiver !!! Make sure your Router that you use with this unit is WPA and WPA2 compatibly with PSK TKIS links on in the router settings. The USB WiFi's dont like older handshake settings so your router needs to be fairly new or just do a FIRMWARE upgrade and it will magically start working. Also if your router was provided by your ISP make sure to note the MAC address of the ONKYO USB in the settings.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well, I have yet to get this to work. I have the receiver hook up to my router via physical wiring. I should call Crutchfield to either get this to work or return it. Kind of a bummer at this point, but i have not spent too much time on getting it to work either.
Pros:
Um, none really - it is very tiny, though.
Cons:
This device does not want to work for me.

Onkyo UWF-1 Wi-Fi® USB Adapter

Written By Dan, New Baltimore, MI on Monday, February 06, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Recommended if you have the patience to go beyond the provided instructions. Be sure to update your router firmware and receiver firmware. What appeared to help me was changing the channel used by my router.
Pros:
Crutchfield tech support was very helpful!
Cons:
I knew the instructions were too simple. Range isn't great, but adequate.

Read before You Buy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wireless connectivity for the TX-NR609 sounds terrific until you find in the instructions that it only works with a Microsoft media program and not iTunes. I would not have purchase if I had known of this limitation but it make work for you if you use the MS media program.
Pros:
Wireless connectivity a great feature.
Cons:
Limited usefulness because it fails to work with iTunes.

Not so good

Written By Bill P, Blue Bell, PA on Tuesday, January 24, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This device "saw" my wireless router immediately, however I had streaming issues constantly. I even moved the wireless router to a location about two feet away. This did not resolve the problem. Since I had the router so close I tried using an ethernet cable. No more problems. So I requested a RMA from Crutchfield and sent it back. his product was a good idea that didn't work for me.
Pros:
Small and easy to physically install in the stereo receiver.
Cons:
Set up instructions are very poor. If you don't know much about computer devices you will be lost. Crutchfield technical support was no help. I finally managed to get it "connected" to the wireless router myself. Then the streaming problem.

Unable to get it to work with AES-based WPA2-PSK

Written By Andrew, Vermont on Friday, December 23, 2011

The UWF-1 is nice and small -- plug it into the front USB and you can't even tell that it's there unless you really get up close. Unfortunately, the small size seems to adversely affect its performance. The reported signal strength is extremely low - 20% when I have my router one floor down and about forty feet away where as the signal is good and strong with all other devices at the same distance. When the router is just 15 feet from the receiver with a clear line of sight the reported signal strength floats around 68% -- I would expect higher. The cons of this device far outweigh the pros, especially when there are cheaper and better performing alternatives available.

This UWF-1 went wee, wee, wee! all the way back to Crutchfield.
Pros:
Small, unobtrusive
Cons:
Poor signal strength, pricey compared to alternatives, haven't been able to get it to work with AES-based WPA2-PSK security

Great Once You Get It Working

Written By JCM, SC on Tuesday, August 30, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this feature on an Onkyo TX-NR609 AV receiver -- highly recommend it, BUT... As others have said, the installation is hardly intuituve. Getting the Onkyo help line is time-consuming and in this case a waste. UWF-1 recognized my LAN, but refused to accept my LAN password. Onkyo tech told me "there has to be something wrong w/. your network, since the USB is finding it". FINALLY determined that the UWF-1 does not recognize certain routers w/ non- alphanumeric PW's, which was remedied with a firmware update. My recommendations -- take the time and trouble to apply the firmware update 1st, and don't try to install the USB w/o at least a temporary display screen connected. Once installed, a whole new world of internet radio and music services is opened up. Sound is great, possibilities endless!

Works, but tedious to setup

Written By RichW, NJ on Sunday, August 14, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the UWF-1 for a new Onkyo TX-NR609 receiver. I realized that I would need to upgrade the receiver's firmware before I tried anything else, so that was what I did. I followed the instructions - downloading the firmware upgrade to my PC, copying to a USB stick and then upgrading the receiver's firmware. That all worked very well.

Anyway, once the firmware upgrade was done, actually getting the Receiver/UWF-1 onto my home network was tedious and took several hours. My home network has WPA-2 encryption enabled. Getting the correct pass key into the receiver was slow and error prone. I don't have a TV connected as a display, so I'm using the Receiver LCD display. When entering a character of the pass key, the characters show up as "****" instead of the actual character typed. This may be fine for the traditional PC password, but its very awkward on the small LCD display. The real characters should be displayed until the "OK done" is selected.

My original pass key was a long phrase - too long for the UWF-1. So I had to change all the other WiFi devices on my network to a shorter pass key so that the new pass key was short enough for the UWF-1.

Once I finally got that set up, the UWF seems to work well. The receiver says that it's received signal strength is only 30%-40%, but streaming seems to work fine. My access point is only 20 feet away in another room in the house.

The Onkyo vTuner Internet Radio guide is a nice feature.

Disappointing

I have a strong WIFI signal but this dongle performed poorly. I could not connect with any of the net features of my receiver. When connected to net directly (had to cannibalize) receiver worked fine.

I have returned the adapter for credit.
