Our take on the USA SPEC DF-FORD20 Adapter

by Tim Sprinkle
USA Spec

Enjoy maximum possible sound quality when you play your portable music through your Ford's factory radio. USA SPEC's DF-FORD20 adapter lets you connect your portable music player directly to your compatible 1996-up Ford factory radio. Just plug the adapter cable into your radio's CD changer input, mount the interface box, and you're ready to listen to your tunes.

And it gets better — if you also have another sound source you want to hook up to your Ford's sound system, the DF-FORD20 provides a second set of connections for an iPod, satellite radio tuner, or DVD player. You can switch between sources with your factory radio controls. Warranty: 1 year.

Note: You may also need to purchase a pair of universal DIN tools to remove your factory radio. Please enter your vehicle information or call a Sales Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

Features

Compatibility: The DF-FORD 20 allows you to add two auxiliary inputs to the factory radio in select Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Mazda, and Nissan vehicles. The adapter plugs into the factory radio using the supplied cables, avoiding wire splicing and modifications.

Note: The adapter is not compatible with vehicles that have factory navigation or DVD systems. The adapter takes the place of the CD changer, so you cannot have a CD changer and the adapter connected to your vehicle at the same time.

Mounting: The adapter can be secured to any flat surface using the supplied mounting screws.

Connections: The adapter has two auxiliary inputs (Audio Input 1 and 2) on the left side panel. Each input consists of left and right RCA audio jacks. On the right side panel the adapter has a round 8-pin jack that interfaces with the supplied CAS-F12 cable. The opposite end of the CAS-F12 cable plugs into the CAS-F20 cable which plugs into the factory radio harness.

Cables:

  • CAS-F20: Rectangular 16 and 20 pin Molex plugs on each end (insert between factory radio and factory wiring); Rectangular 12 pin Molex input for CAS-F12 cable
  • CAS-F12: Rectangular 12-pin female connector on one end (plugs into CAS-F20 harness); Round 8-pin male connector on the other end (plugs into auxiliary input module)

Poor Quality

Written By John, Superior, CO on Friday, July 18, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my 2001 Ford Escape. When playing my ipod through this
adapter the music sounds muddy and volume is much lower that my radio
and CD. Installation was easy, but some of the wires to my stereo didn't
seem to fit right. I have a FM transmitter that sounds better. I wish I had
never bought this product.

Very Pleased!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed the USA-SPEC adapter and can't be happier. It took me all of 5 minutes to install and hook up wires from my laptop. Audio quality is great. I used to use one of those radio freq. transmitters and hated every second of it. This thing works perfectly. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to listen to any external audio source through their car's radio.

Awesome

This product is worth every penny. The quality is soooooo much better
than that of an FM modulated device. The hardest part of the installation
was getting the new harness to fit behind my radio, but it's still very much
worth the price and installation time. I drive a 2002 F-150 XLT with factory
stereo.

Phenomenal Product!

Written By Matt, Atlanta, GA on Friday, December 28, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For those of you with the Mach 460 Audio System in the 2003 Mustang, this adapter is for you. I've never installed anything on my car, especially something that involved removing pieces and swapping cords. However, the installation could not have been any easier. The vehicle specific instructions provided by Crutchfield spelled everything out so well that there was no question about what to do. The sound quality was improved beyond belief. I figured it would just get rid of the static from my FM modulator (ipod), but it drastically improved all aspects including bass and treble response. My only qualm is that a ground loop is necessary for me because it picks up the alternator whine. Other than that, this is a flawless, most necessary product for us without an aux input.

2000 Ford Excursion

Written By Thomas, Washington, DC on Sunday, September 30, 2007

Could not have been easier! No experience and installed in under half an hour including the inputs for the other devices. The product works very well, but heed the advice of most on here and buy ground loop isolators or the alternator whine will drive you crazy on the highway. Make sure you buy two if you are going to use both possible inputs and I do recommend spending the extra 5 bucks on the removal tools--too easy.

I have a hardwired Sirius Starmate attached to one port and a 3.5mm auxilliary jack (headphone jack size) which I use for either my GPS or MP3 player. You will lose volume when using (even more with isolators) but not so much that you can't compensate by just turning up the radio...

This really is one of those few well functioning and simple to install products out there. I wish I didn't have to lose use of my factory disc changer, but the in dash single disc still works so oh well. I only knocked of a star because the manufacturer should build in the ground loop isolators as they seem universally needed.

Purchase and enjoy

Forget FM Modulator - This product is awesome

Written By Kevin, Columbus, Ohio on Tuesday, August 14, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I looked at this product for a few days and looked at other sites for reviews for my specific vehicle - 2002 Ford Escape with the Mach in dash 6 CD Sound system - but I could not find any.

I ended up purchasing this and could not be happier. The directions say you need a comp or shuffle button, but this one uses the CD button to switch between the in dash 6 changer and the DJ as they call it.

To install this, simply take your radio out, unplug the factory cord, plug the conversion cord into the radio, put the factory cord into the conversion cord, then plug the adapter's cord into the conversion cord and put the radio back in the dash. No power cable needed, no wire taps or anything.

The audio was 1 or 2 clicks away from being the same audio level as the cd or radio, but the quality was CD quality and sounded great.

USA SPEC DF-FORD20 Adapter

Written By David, Pomona, CA on Friday, June 08, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is for people who own 01-03 Mustangs w/6-disc in-dash, Mach 460 audio systems. I did some research and found out that this item was successfully installed on several Mustangs (01-03;not certain if it works on 04's)w/Mach audio. I took the risk and purchased the item. I installed it in my 2003 Mustang Cobra, and the adapter works superbly. It was everything I hoped it would be. This is a very inexpensive alternative to purchasing a new head unit w/aux inputs. I would definitely recomment it.

Great Product

I'm a 58 year old man and have been a mechanic for over 40 years. I have installed many products but none as simple as this product. I was given a sirius sattalite system for my 2002 F-250 for christmas and after hooking it up the sound quality just was'nt the same as the stock radio. I purchased your interface and now my hour drive to work is back to being a pleasure. and yes a 58 year old man does understand and appreciate good sound quality and a easy install, thanks for making my purchase and install so easy.

Installation of Sirius radio in 01 Ford Ranger

Written By Charles, Rocklin, Ca on Thursday, February 01, 2007

I was very disappointed with the sound quality produced by the “FM transmitter” of my Sirius radio. The USA SPEC adapter allowed me to connect the audio out of the Sirius radio directly to my Ford factory radio. This difference is amazing!

NOTE- in many installations you will pick up a whining sound from electrical interference. To eliminate this install a ground isolation device which connects between the USA SPEC device and the Sirius (or iPod)?

Great product!!!

Written By Layton, Columbus, Ohio on Sunday, October 15, 2006

I just installed this in my 2002 Ford Mustang GT with the Mach 460 system. Although it is said in some places on the internet this type of adapter will not work with the Mach 460 6-disk head unit, believe me it does, and the install couldn't be easier. Unlike the similar adapter from PIE, there is no need to splice anything for power/ground. And best of all it has 2 inputs! I hooked up my Sirius satellite and my MP3 player. The sound through the Sirius is 100% better than the FM modulator I was using. What a difference!! GREAT PRODUCT!!! GREAT SOUND!!!

Works Great!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works well. I do have a slight alternator whine, I'm going to recheck all grounds to the accessories. I think that may be the problem, since the XM Roady 2 on port one sounds good, but the DVD player on port 2 has more whine.

Nice to get rid of the FM static. Super Easy Install!

USA SPEC DF-FORD20 Adapter

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great Product, the hardest thing about installing is removing the stereo which is easy with the right tools.Ive had a similar device that required you to splice power and ground, this product is entirely plug and play. Low volume issue is not due to this product , its due to the output levels of the device your installing to it. I installed a line amp between my device and this adapter and the results are terrific.

I have a 2003 Mustang with the Mach 460 6 CD system. Well, long story short, it works perfectly. The included directions were easy to follow.

Oh, and for anyone with the Mach CD changer system, this will work as long as you don't also use an external CD changer.

USA SPEC DF-FORD20 Adapter

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy as pie! I had it in and running in under 10 minutes! I put velcro on top of the reciever and it fit perfect. I ran the rca to mini cable under the dash and was done!

What a great way to CHEAPLY use the unused cd changer input on my truck.

I found a cable set at best buy that gives me a dash mount female mini plug that holds on with 2-sided tape, and a male to male mini cable for the i-pod for a more proffessional finished look. All this for under a hundred bucks!

You can't lose with this setup.

Definitly spend the 4.99 for the adapters to remove your stereo. And spread them apart when you are using them, the instructions are a little vague...

USA SPEC DF-FORD20 Adapter

Written By Kent, Baton Rouge, LA on Monday, April 10, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this adapter in my 2002 F-150 for my Toshiba Gigabeat. The Crutchfield instructions were great, and I installed it in about 1/2 hour. I had never opened up a dashboard before, so you know it must be simple. I'd spend the $5 or so and get the DIN tools to remove the receiver. They made the task quite easy.

I don't get quite the volume I would have expected, but it's plenty loud enough. The sound quality is miles ahead of the FM modulator I was using.
