Our take on the USA Spec iPod® Interface for Chrysler

by Tim Sprinkle
USA Spec

You can take it with you. Just because you've got a factory radio in your Chrysler, doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod (and the hours and hours of music it contains) at home. Just install USA SPEC's iPod interface — it not only allows you to listen to all your favorite tunes through your car's speakers, it even lets you control song and playlist selections right from your radio. And with your iPhone® connected, you can even stream music from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livio Radio, iHeartRadio, and more.

Just mount the compact interface box in a hidden location in your vehicle, and connect the adapter cable to the CD changer input on your compatible Chrysler factory radio. Plug your iPod into the interface — you can control volume, source, song selection, and up to five different play lists right from the radio. And the interface charges your iPod while it's connected.

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle. As the iPod interface uses the CD changer port, any existing changer that you have must be disconnected.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

Notes:

  • *Requires Apple Lightning to 30-pin Adapter (472LTN230P, sold separately) or cable (472LT30PAD, sold separately).
  • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Control Modes: The iPod interface adapter features the following control modes.

  • Playlist Mode: You can create up to 5 favorite mobile playlist then use your radio's CD changer controls to access and control your playlist.
  • Direct Mode: Gives you complete control of your iPod while it is connected to the factory radio. Your iPod is not locked out while connected to the radio and you are able to manually access your complete iPod content. The Radio still can adjust song up/down random or shuffle play but you can manually control your iPod and select any playlist, genre or Artist of your choice.
  • Dual Mode: Combines features of Direct Mode and Playlist Mode. You can create and access your favorite mobile playlist or directly access all your iPod content manually on your iPod. Your iPod displays song title information and iPod is not locked, so the iPod can be operated manually at all times. (May be referred to as "Hybrid Mode" in some manuals)

App Streaming (in Direct Mode): Direct mode also lets you listen to the sound from your iPhone's downloaded music apps (such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, etc.) through your factory head unit & speakers. You will continue to control your iPhone's apps & view song/artist information from its touchscreen.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need applicable music service accounts.

Playlist Names: In order for the adapter/factory radio to recognize a playlist, it should be named CHR1... through CHR5... Text can follow the CHR name and number, such as CHR3_artistname or CHR2-jazz. For a given disc slot (1-5), if there is no playlist named CHR followed by that number, that disc slot will play the first available playlist on the iPod (the second blank slot will play the second available playlist, etc).

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod input on the PA11-CHR there is an auxiliary input (RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, etc. The aux input is accessed at disc 6 track 1 using the factory radio controls. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod connected. When using the aux input in the Playlist Mode, the Play All mode is moved to the Disc 5 slot and the CHR5... custom playlist is lost.

Playlist Mode Controls: In Playlist Mode the iPod is controlled using the CD Changer commands on the factory radio. Use the Radio's Disc Select controls to access the 5 custom mobile playlists, the Play All mode, or the auxiliary input. Track select, forward and backward, works just like on a CD. Other commands include shuffle play, scan (plays first 10 seconds of each track), Fast Track Search (skips forward or backward 10 tracks), and Fast Forward/Fast Reverse within a song (available in shuffle mode only).

Battery Charge: The PA11-CHR charges iPod battery when connected. Charging stops after 1 hour of non-use to prevent draining the vehicle's battery.

CD Changer Port: The adapter uses the factory radio's CD Changer port so if the vehicle has an existing outboard CD Changer it must be disconnected.

Pause: When a non-iPod source is selected on the radio (AM/FM/Cass/CD) the iPod pauses.

Resume: If the iPod is not disconnected after use, it will resume playing where it left off when you restart the vehicle.

Works Great

Written By Whitesheep, Phoenix, AZ on Wednesday, January 15, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wonderful. Very high quality sound because it uses the iPod interface instead of the headphone jack. I should have installed this earlier. Since I don't have the CD changer, I lost nothing but gained an iPod connection with front face controls AND RCA input jacks for anything else I would like to hook up, such as a satalite receiver.
Pros:
Easy to install, Great sound, Bonus RCA jacks along with iPod interface
Cons:
Must give up CD changer if you have one

OK Product

Written By VA_Tim, Ashburn, VA on Thursday, January 02, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this product in a 2003 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with the stock 7-speaker system. This is my fourth USA Spec Adapter I've purchased. Absolutely love the previous three, but this one wasn't quite up to par when compared to the others. Install was very simple, and as always, the Crutchfield instructions were spot on. Installed the adapter in about 30 minutes. The problem I had with this one was that the iPhone 4S input would keep dropping out (the head unit uses the CD/Aux input for iPhone/POD input). It would keep reverting to the radio without any user input. I had to reselect the iPhone on the head unit to resume playing. After a while, this stopped, but still occurs periodically. I'm not sure if this is a problem with the stock head unit, the iPhone, or the adapter, but thought I would point it out.

It also takes a long time (several seconds) to "see" the iPhone and start playing. It does work with Pandora and Spotify as well, but not for phone calls (i.e., to use the vehicle's speakers for a speaker phone).

FYI - make absolutely sure you have the correct model OEM head unit that is compatible with this adapter - not all are. My was compatible, but is still having this problem. I would have rated the adapter higher if I knew for sure that it wasn't the cause of these problems.
Pros:
Super easy to install. Great sound quality compared to other adapters.
Cons:
Input dropping out periodically (see review) The adapter should include a screw hole for mounting to a bracket or similar once installed (had to Velcro mine to keep from rattling around in the Jeep).

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is so simple that it's a natural do it yourself project. At least in my case, when all it required was being plugged into an existing cd changer outlet on the back of my car's radio. The unit also has RCA jacks for another optional device, so to keep those jacks accessible, take the manufacturer's advice and put the unit somewhere accessible, most likely the glove box. Be sure to set up the dip switches for your particular situation. The only minor problem I've experienced -only a few times in the three weeks since I installed the unit - is momentary audio glitching. But it's rare and clears up after only three or four seconds.

This is a great product. With the instructions that came with it made for a quick 15 minute installation. The music quality is excellent and I wish I would have bought it sooner. The only downside is it takes about 30 seconds to connect to your phone.
Pros:
easy install, great sounds quality
Cons:
Takes a minute to reconnect

Works great in my 2006 Jeep Liberty w/ Model RBK

Written By Dave C, Boston, MA on Thursday, August 16, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed very easily in my 2006 Jeep Liberty with Model RBK single CD / radio. I even found a video on Youtube which showed how to remove the radio (total of 7 screws for everything). All in all, maybe 20 minutes of total time. Mounted the box internal to the dashboard using double-sided sticky tape and it seems to be holding well. Would buy again in a heartbeat.
Pros:
Easy to install, works great.
Cons:
It would be nice to be able to have a random play but since it's alphabetized by song title, it's not bad.

This is the 5th USA Spec unit I buy. Always get one for my cars because they're simple to install and use. Can't go with a better unit. The features may vary slightly mainly depending on the specific vehicle or stereo but overall you cant go wrong.
Pros:
Simple installation. Ease of use. Integrates with steering wheel contraols without any additional adapters
Cons:
Cable connection at unit (from Ipod) could be a little more secure to prevent it from sliding out with use over time.

2005 Dodge Ram 1500 with RB4 Factory Nav. Radio

Written By Dennis, New Jersey on Friday, May 18, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Failed second day. I bought it for an iPod Touch 4G interface for a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup with a RB4 factory radio with factory GPS navigation. I was told that the unit was compatible. I am not sure what the reason for the failure was, but the radio no longer recognized the unit. I think the failure might be attributed to an iPod Nano 5G that I plugged in on the second day, I wanted to see if both iPod's would work. The USA Spec (581PA11CHR) worked fine initially on the second day then failed. I bought a PAC PXDP Module with PXHCH3 Vehicle Specific (2005 Dodge Ram) Wire Harness which has worked great so far (about two weeks). The one real impressive attribute about the PAC other than it is working is the iPod interface cable from the unit is six feet long - a lot of routing flexibility. This was my first purchase from Crutchfield and was unbelievably impressed by their customer service. It is refreshing to deal with such a superior company given all the "lip service" about customer service one finds on the internet. I am just sorry the product did not work for me.
Pros:
Easy to install, worked great the first day.
Cons:
It failed.

This works perfectly, I can engender fast forward and rewind using the factory stereo. There is a little bit of initial noise when the unit begins and is powering on but it goes away and playback is not affected by it like some other reviewer said.
Pros:
Works flawlessly
Cons:
Its far too expensive. It's not like it's a new aftermarket stereo or something. It's a bit of a price gouge.

2004 Ram 1500

Written By Steven S., Florida on Tuesday, March 20, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation was a breeze thanks to Crutchfield. Included cables are durable and are long enough to allow for installation of the adapter anywhere behind the dash. I mounted mine under the center console behind an easily removed kick panel. That way I can get to it to add an AUX input cable or adjust the DIPs. I routed the ipod cable under the carpet to the center seat area so I can control it from the driver seat. The whole install is completely hidden and sounds great with my 6th Gen nano. I love that the ipod stays charged too. The benefits far outweigh the few minor quirks. The biggest issue is that when the truck is turned on, the radio automatically goes to CD Changer mode (where the adapter used), even if I was listening to the radio when I turned the truck off. If the ipod is plugged in, it starts to play, but if it's not plugged in, it just sits there silently until I plug in my nano or select AM/FM. Additionally, on rare occasion, like once every three weeks, the unit will turn off briefly mid-song, like it is resetting itself, and then continues the song. Finally, other nit is sometimes while skipping to another song, instead of fading-out the song like the ipod normally does, the adapter will "fade-up" instead --meaning the last split second of the song gets louder before the next song plays. My nano doesn't do this on its own.
Pros:
Easy install. Discreet, factory look. Long, durable cables. Charges ipod. Sounds great. Aux audio jacks. No More CDs!
Cons:
A few minor functional quirks.

Cheapest way to add Ipod function to stock system

Written By J.Blake, San Diego on Sunday, February 26, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had purchased this because for my 2001 Grand Cherokee. My Grand Cherokee already came with the Infinity Sound system and would have been costly to upgrade. This product was inexpensive way to add my Ipod to my factory system. I didn't have a cd changer but my radio had the option to add one which this adapter plugs into. Interface device was simple to install and sound quality is great. I did read an earlier review of someone who installed one in there Grand Cherokee (2nd generation like mine) and complained of a humming sound. I don't know how that person had theirs set up but I didn't hear any humming in the speakers. If you want a great way to add your Ipod without having to change your factory set up this product is your answer.
Pros:
Easy to install and the cables to the interface device and to the ipod are more than enough.
Cons:
Didn't have mounting screws like the picture showed on the website. I didn't need them because I found another way to secure the interface device but it would have been have them just in case.

Works Well, With Interference

Written By Joe M, Oregon, WI on Monday, February 06, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit works well, the installation was easy, and the box and cables look durable. On the downside, the cables seem to pick up a decent amount of interference from my iPhone 4S. When I'm not playing music, I can hear a very definite hum with the iPhone plugged in. When I unplug the iPhone, the hum goes away. I don't have that at all with my dock radio in my office, so the hum is definitely unique to the USA Spec interface.

Great product, I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to keep the stock radio and hook up/control and iPod/iPhone.
Pros:

Cons:

99 Grand Cherokee Installation

Written By Ron L., Chesterfield, VA on Thursday, October 13, 2011

Upon receiving this package, I was a little concerned as it looks like some of those boxed electronics that come out of a 3rd world country. The product itself looked to be of quality construction. Instructions were simple. I have a 99 Grand Cherokee with the factory Infinity Gold system with the 10 disc changer. The most difficult part of the install was finding a path to route the iPod cable through the dash. I managed to fish a coat hanger down the left side of the radio opening and attached the cable to it from under the driver's side of the dash. Pulling it up to the radio area was a snap. Once hooked up, I noticed a very low frequency hum that increases with iPod volume. Also, the iPod will stop playing in the middle of a song. I have to hit the button on the radio as if advancing to the next song and it resumes playing. Reminds me of an 8 track player, except I have to manually advance the song. It's irritating to have these problems after spending this much.

The product worked as advertised. Easy install for my 06 Chrysler Pacifica. It's
probably the easiest install of an accessory that I have ever done and the
Crutchfield master sheet is great. My only complaint is that I when I'm using USA

problem but I wish it wasn't an issue.

Works well...Took less then 20min to install Plenty of wire for different
install locations. Do Not lose steering wheel button functions. With big
playlists on Ipod...doesn't make it too easy to search. wish it displayed track
names on stereo... set up playlists on ipod the way it says to in the
instructions to play selected playlists...it gets 2 or 3 right...but sometimes
chooses a playlist that i didn't want it to read. so i fixed the problem by
only having 5 playlists on my ipod at a time. Those are only a few con's...but
the pro's out weigh them. Can keep the ipod hidden...keep the stock stereo so
no thieves eyeballing... EZ install....Great sound....over all good product....

2005 Pacifica

Written By JohnM, Pittsburgh, PA on Friday, March 25, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Read a lot of reviews before purchasing. Read about how hard it was to put in a
Pacifica, couldn't have been more wrong! The install was a breeze, took about 20
minutes total. The device works great. Only knock is that it will cut out occasionally,
but it happens rarely. To install, only needed a flathead to pry and a phillips to
unscrew the stereo. I got my directions from eHow. Pried off the silver trim around
the shifter, pulled the cover around/beside the shifter, took off both pieces on either
side of the stereo, unscrewed the stereo, plugged in the adaptor, reassembled
and was done. Love it!

Problems in 2003 Jeep Liberty

Written By kron, NJ on Saturday, February 12, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Install was very easy without any problems. The documentation provided by
Crutchfield was detailed and accurate so the adapter went in very fast. However
the operation in my truck is a quirky. First, when the truck is turned off then
on or the stereo is turned off then on the stereo always comes back to the
adapter and displays no disk it the ipod is not connected. Other people use the
truck and it is a pain that you always have to change it back to another source.
It used to always remember what the last operation was - either AM, FM or CD.
Kind of a pain. However, the real problem is the volume control.. The volume
does not work when the adapter is selected/playing. I actually have to switch
to another source, either AM or FM, adjust the volume and then go back to the
ipod. I will try to contact the vendor but I didn't expect these issues..

USA Spec iPod® Interface for Chrysler

Written By RichS, Chicago, IL on Tuesday, September 28, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product was easy to install and the cable is plenty long for many different
installation options. The part that I was disappointed in was the finding that when I
plugged in my iPhone 3GS, the display stated that this product was not designed to be
used with iPhone and the cellular signal may cause noise interference. Then I turned
up the volume and heard the interference. It is better than the FM radio transmitter I used
to use, but the interference is noticeable. Especially above mid-volume. I was expecting
better sound from such an expensive device. I would not recommend buying this if you
have an iPhone. Only buy it if you have an iPod.

sheet that Crutcfield sent was awesome. Anyone can install this unit.

Easy to install

Written By EdMcC, Cleveland, TN on Monday, September 20, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Install was really easy. Was a little intimidated at first, but after just following the basic radio
removal instruction, voila, went right in. The only complaint might be the instructions showed
a radio removal tool that I could not find anywhere. But it wasn't even needed.

Plugged right into the back of the radio. Just hung the white box with zip ties up in the dash
and routed my Ipod lead to where I needed it.

Am going to get a bracket to hang the Ipod instead of laying it in the console tray.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500. I was looking at this ipod kit for a while and like the price. It was cheaper than other sites and I trust crutchfield. It was a simple installation for me. The product came with a step by step manual and it was all simple plug and play. I love it and the best part is I don't have to burn any more Cd's! I highly recommend this over changing out the whole radio. I am happy with my stock radio and it doesn't give any one any reason to break into your vehicle, because 1. You don't have some flashy radio to entice anyone passing by 2. no one will know you have an ipod adapter, you can hide it any where!

'01 Jeep Grand Cher and iPod Nano installation

Written By Charlie, Dover, DE on Sunday, January 03, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great service, quick ship, works exactly as advertised, great product. Instructions in product and Crutchfield's Master Sheet made installation a snap. Sound quality is equivalent to factory CD changer previously used in vehicle. Total installation time was about 1.5 hrs. Vast majority of time was spent determining where to locate control box and how to route cables to meet my needs. I found in this Jeep that there was just enough space next to the factory head unit to put the control box on its side and get a good fit. Would recommend!

Ipod Adapter for 2004 Dodge Ram Quad Cab 4X4

Written By Chris, Arlington, Washington on Tuesday, June 23, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Ipod adapter works great. It came with instructions on how to remove the trim piece covering the radio and instructions on how to remove the radio. I had the radio out and the adapter hooked up in about 10 minutes. Routing the wires and mounting the adapter took the most time due to limited access behind the radio. The installation was completed in less than an hour.

I have only used the adapter for a few hours so far, but it seems to work great with good sound quality....and I can control my ipod from my factory stereo and charge it at the same time. I highly recommend this product.

2003 Dodge Ram Quad Cab - Laramie Eddition

I purchased this product about two weeks ago and installed it in one hour
and it just worked without any issue. I did take a couple of extra steps
and install the device in the lower storage compartment of the center
console then ran the ipod connector up to the upper console through the
hinge cover so my ipod would be easily accesible when driving. I have a
brand new Nano and had to purchase an new cable in order for it to charge
when in use. Overall I am extremely pleased and feel that this was well
worth the money I spent cheapest way I know to have access to all of my
cd's.

Works Just Fine

Written By Snakeman, Virginai Beach on Saturday, December 13, 2008

I got the USA-Spec adapter for mating a 120Bg iPod Classic to my 2004 PT Cruiser. I installed the box in the glove compartment and routed the wires through the slots already in the back of the plastic box. The cord to the iPod got routed through a hole I drilled right next to the power socket. I used a Pro-Fit Vehicle Specific Mount and the whole thing went together flawlessly, in about half an hour. I set the DIP switches for Direct mode, and everything operates perfectly from the iPod itself. The sound quality is superb. If I had the right kind of stereo in my two caravans so that I could use this unit, I would not hesitate to buy two more of these!

I bought this for my factory installed radio which is linked to controls on my steering wheel. It was a snap to install and sounds like a dream! I did find that I prefered to put the adaptor box in my glove box for easy access if the cables should ever come loose from it. This item is well worth the $$$ and still being able to use my wheel controls makes it priceess!!! My advice treat yourself its well worth the great sound!

Installed this in my 2003 Ram 1500. Factory radio with ipod classic. Took about 20 minutes to install. Very clear instructions and was simple to install. Setup playlists as instructed and have been very happy with the performance. All functions work as listed. Seek next song from radio controls and up and down to next play list from radio controls. Can't beat it for the money.

This product only works with my iPod, not my iPod Nano. It's software is
specific so as you update the software on your iPod, it may not work. The
fix from the mfgr is to use the RCA jacks. Music plays OK, but it will not
charge the unit as you drive. It's not worth the cost, your better off with a
$10 patch cord.

Written By Roger, Nebraska on Tuesday, March 18, 2008

I was amazed. The plugs in fit the radio perfectly, the wiring was long enough to reach everything, and it did take less than an hour to install! I was afraid that after spending so much on the Ipod, and all the other adapters and accessories this would solve just enough that I'd have to spend even more. But this makes my Ipod do everything I want it to do in the car.

Does it's job, which is to play songs on my iPod through the factory stereo. However, I've had mine for 8 months now and it's got some quirks. The volume will lower itself randomly for no reason. At least once a trip the iPod will shut off and then come back on immediately, resulting in a 12-15 second delay in the music. The iPod works fine by itself, no volume changes or random reset issues. Maybe my unit is defective, but these 2 issues are really starting to bother me.

I was very happy to find that the sound quality from the iPod through the adapter was much better than what I had been getting through AUX port connections with other systems. I have had no problem with the steering wheel interface buttons on the Liberty--everything works as advertised. The install was very easy--the instructions for removing and reinstalling the radio were great. A++ Crutchfield experience.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's hard to beat this product, when it offers every option that the Dealer installed unit would at half the price. The only part that stinks about the install is that my CD player is mounted with a large and hard to remove stabilizer bar that made it a pain to plug in, but that isn't the products fault. If you have a Wrangler, get ready, and read the instructions. First rate product and service, I have my iPod and my plug and play satellite receiver hooked up now, and couldn't be happier.

Great for GEN3 NANO

Written By John, Bethlehem PA on Wednesday, January 30, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product works wonderfully and as advertised with a factory CD changer CAPABLE radio. I absolutely love the factory radio because of the big easy to use buttons and knobs. Great in the winter when wearing gloves. The little buttons on the aftermarket radios with all the sub menues drive me nuts! Also, no one is tempted to steal the factory radio. A also bought an 8" BAZOOKA sub woofer from Crutchfield and some upgraded speakers that fit the standard locations. You'd be shocked at what the BAZOOKA does for the sound.

In an earlier review someone said the USASPEC adapter didn't work with the Nano 3rd GEN. I would STRONGLY suspect they forgot to set it to DIRECT mode since mine works perfectly. If you don't do that, then it would lock out the scroll wheel as they said. I guess reading the directions can be helpful.

Freggin great!

Written By Shaun, Boston, MA on Thursday, August 02, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The story goes... I had a 97 Thunderbird all custom sound, spent well over 2 grand, and set it up myself. Had my iPod hiddin in the dash, and loved it. Well, bought an 04 Jeep Grand Cher and sorta got over the whole bass and custom thing... just grew out of it I guess. The factory stereo works fine, tape and CD player, radio with information, and speakers sounded good... so why rip it out? Well, I was still lacking my iPod. Bought an FM transmitter, and been using that for a month, until I found this product here.

I have prior radio installation, done it many times for my own cars as well as friends and family. Installiation for someone with experience should run you about a half an hour, just like everyone says... I figure for a newbie, maybe an hour or hour and a half.

Install was seemless, except for one small problem. I couldnt find a place behind the radio or dash to mount the unit, so instead I mounted it in the glove box. The problem I had was stuffing the wire from the radio cavity to the glove box compartment. Other than that, installiation and operation was a breeze. It sounds great, and no static as I had from the FM transmitter. Ill never use thoes things again!

Thanks again crutchfield!

No more CDs to fumble with!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been looking for something like this for my 2003 Jeep Liberty Limited for the longest time. It works better than just a plain AUX (auxiliary port) - the PA11CHR allows you to connect through the iPod's data port - I can control track selection using the buttons on my steering wheel. It even works better than a 6 CD changer because I can add as many or as few songs as I want without having to burn a new compilation - awesome.
I also like the fact that my iPod charges while being connected! Crutchfield provided easy to follow installation intructions making it a snap. Total install time took 45 minutes. My only regret is that I didn't purchase this sooner! Crutchfield got this unit to me in 2 business days. Thanks!

USA Spec IPOD connector works

Written By Mark, Florence, SC on Wednesday, May 09, 2007

2004 Jeep Liberty, factory AM/FM/CD w/underseat factory sub-woofer w/30g iPod video. The USA Spec iPod connector brought my collection of thousands of songs to my Jeep Liberty without any major installation hassles. The installation is straightforward, with the only snags being the iPod connecting cable needing a bit of a snip on one pin to properly release from the iPod and the base of the miMount needing some trimming to fit the connecting cable to the iPod (notch is not wide enough for USA Spec cable, which is a bit wider than the Apple connecting cable). In conjunction with the miMount Lo-Boy, the full capabilities of my iPod are readily at hand. A small hole in the "coin tray" on the console, with a rubber grommet cleaning up the appearance, effectively puts the connection cable out of the way. If there was one change in the product I would make, it would be to offer the abilities of both the direct mode and the playlist mode at the same time. I have mine in direct mode which works fine, but requires taking my eyes off the road momentarily to spin the dial. The sound quality is much clearer and richer than the factory CD. I highly recommend this product.

If your looking for ipod playability for your factory Chrysler/Dodge stereo, this is the product. I ordered from Crutchfield on a Monday morning and it arrived on Thursday. Pretty fast. Also it was the lowest price on the internet. It was a breeze to hook up and works and sounds much better than I expected. There are two play modes to choose from and I choose the manual mode (you control the ipod not the deck) and it works great. I would highly the PA11-CHR if your looking for ipod playabilty on your factory deck.

WORKS FLAWLESSLY ON PACIFICA...EVEN WITH TERK XMDCPK

Written By Larry, Kansas City, MO on Thursday, March 15, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The price of this little device might make a few eyebrows raise up, but for what it does it is well worth it. No more fiddling with FM modulators, power cables, and so on. With this you can run the cable to your center console (as I did in my Pacifica) or into your glove box and plug the iPod in and forget about it. It will take the place of your CD changer if you have one, I did not, but I added the Terk XMDCPK (to add XM radio) when I first bought the car and that device has a pass through so I could connect the USA SPEC adaptor to it as well. We are talking FULL system integration.

Now you might want to know how difficult of an install it is. Well, I have been doing car audio well over 7 years and it took me about 25-30 minutes with panel removing, zip ties in the appropriate places, test of device, and panels placed back on. For folks not too comfortable with it, it will take about an hour or slightly longer. That is assuming you take your time and do it right the first time. A rush job can be done in about 30 minutes, but I discourage that method.

The device even allows for connection of two other audio devices. I mean why do people buy aftermarket stereos anymore with devices like this. You can connect your DVD player sound, another MP3 player, and whatever else you have that has audio output.

Pros: Device does everything it says.
Full integration to factory stereo
Easy install (vehicles maay vary)
Keep all of your existing factory controls...ALL OF THEM even those on the steering wheel.
CD Sound Quality if not higher.

Cons: Price (may be high for some)
You can not see Song or Artist title.

Great product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to attach a Sirius satellite plug-and-play radio and an Ipod Nano to my 2005 Town & Country, so I bought a Sony after market radio to install. Big mistake! After several days and several calls to Crutchfield, I found out that my van has a factory amp that will not allow the after market radio to turn on the speakers without extensive rewiring. Soooooo, I called Crutchfield and they directed me to the USA Spec IPOD Interface. The operator was very helpful and even helped me delete some items that I really didn't need.
The Interface works really well and it is a cinch to install. You can choose to operate the Ipod with your radio or with the Ipod itself. Because of the aux inputs on the Interface, the Sirius works like a champ. The only thing that I am disappointed with is that there's a high pitched whine in the satillite radio but I think better RCA cables will do the trick. All-in-all, a great product.

USA Spec iPod® Interface for Chrysler

Written By Rick, Seymour, WI on Wednesday, February 14, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The product works perfectly as described and was very easy to install. Most of the time spent installing the product involves finding the best way to run the cable. I do prefer the "Direct Mode" as this displays what is playing on the iPod and allows you to control the music from the iPod or from the radio. In the "Playlist Mode" you have to use the radio and the iPod does not show what is playing.

The sound quality is incredible, more bass then you would ever need and music is crystal clear. Great product and instructions from Crutchfield.

USA Spec iPod® Interface for Chrysler

Written By Bob, Mason City, Iowa on Saturday, January 06, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works like a dream. Took about 10 minutes to install. I was worried because all the specs said it replaces the built-in 6-disk CD changer, and Chrysler 300M I have only has a 4-disk changer. I was especially worried, because this unit plays the iPod selections in Disk 6, which I don't have. Apparently the interface took care of that, because my radio now thinks I have a six-disk changer with play lists in disks 1 through 5 and Play All on disk 6. Sound is fantastic. I had been using a cassette adaptor. This is so much clearer and cleaner, rich, full sound, and more consistent volume between songs.

Couldn't imagine the car without it

Written By Mario, Santa Rosa, CA on Tuesday, January 02, 2007

This adapter is everything you'd want from an iPod adapter. It charges the iPod and givescrisp, clean audio through a factory head unit. I bought it for my wife so she could focus more on her commute and less on playing with the iPod. We've had it now for almost a year and there has been no signs of the products wearing down or anything.

A few comments. I would take 20-30 min and make sure eveything is setup the way you want before installing. This includes DIM settings and iPod playlists. If you don't setup the playlists prior to plugging in the iPod, you might run into some frustratiuon with the unit. Setup 5 playlists (4 if you're using the AUX) and it makes life much easier.

One criticism is the AUX Input. I have an XM MyFi car kit running though the AUX In and there are 2 major issues I have. When the iPod is charging, this creates a ground loop. So unless I unplug the iPod I get a high pitch hiss. This can be solved with a ground loop isolator, or by unplugging the iPod. Second, the AUX input volume is very low. It's a good 5-6 volume levels lower than CD, Radio or the Ipod connection. I plan on buying an inline amplifier to fix this but for $140, you expect the unit to already do this. I contacted USA Spec about this via phone and email, but never got any response.

Those two criticisms aside, it is a great product. I've recommended it to other iPod users and think it's by far the best option for connecting your iPod to a factory unit.

USA Spec iPod® Interface for Chrysler

Written By Michael, Oak Ridge, NC on Tuesday, September 05, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well first of all ... I got it a day earlier than I expected ... that was nice. The instruction sheet were very detailed but also initially a bit confusing since they pretty much are an overall "one sheet for everything" type print out. I made a call to customer service just to make sure I had the right thing (and explain the mystery connector in the wire that came with it) ... very helpful and professional folks.

I was at work and had planned to wait till I got home to install but hey ... I'm impatient so at lunch I went out ... popped the cover off the radio, removed some screws and the radio, plugged the unit it the back ... and reinstalled ... simple ... less than 15 minutes start to finish and all I had was a standard flat screw driver and a phillips screw driver.

Performance of this unit is everything they promised and I'm very please with the results.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a '04 Dodge Stratus. I added this device and for someone who never installed one before it was easy. Took me 20 minutes and 10 of that was deciding were to put it. I have my music well organized by genre. So I chose to use my device in playlist mode. I love it: disc-1 is for hip hop, 2-for Pop, 3-Gospel, 4-RnB, etc. If you are like me it is far better than direct mode where all your songs are lumped together as 1-disc. The way I do it I can change disc (like above) to my flavor at anytime.

PROS - All good. Music is loud and clear, much much more

CONS - None. I got exactly what I wanted

2006 Chrysler Pacifica Touring

Written By Jeff, Tampa, FL on Saturday, May 20, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation took about 15 minutes. Here's a tip: remove the panel that covers the gear shift first, then remove the panels on the left and right of the radio. I had to disconnect the Sirius, which I don't ever plan on using to connect the iPod adapter. The radio didn't pull out very far so I had to feel around for the connection, which was really tight. However after I got the Sirius disconnected the USASpec adapter plug fit in quickly. I used velcro, Gorilla Glue, and zip ties to attach the adapter to the foam behind the glove box. (glue the velcro to the foam). The cable hangs out of the glove box when in use and hides in the golve box otherwise.

For some reason sometimes when I first plug in the iPod to the adapter and select an item to play it starts playing the first song (alphabetically) on my iPod. It is a minor annoyance, but not really a big deal. It does however usually continue playing the last song in progress like it is supposed to.

Overall this works great, sound is clear, and install is easy. Just follow the instructions I gave above and you're set. I give it 4 out of 5 instead of 5 because of the 1st song thing.

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Written By Brian, Maryland on Tuesday, May 09, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I think this is a great unit and easy to use and install. I ran the CD changer cable behind the radio and under center console and set the interface box ontop of the computer located under the center console. I used velcro to attach the unit to the top of the computer for easy removal if needed later on. I drilled a hole under the coin tray in the center console to feed the cable into the under side of the console and pluged it into the interface box installed ontop of the computer. i did zip tie some slack of the ipod cable to one of the mounting holes of the interface box so if i ever pulled on the ipod cable to hard it would not pull the ipod cable from the interface box. It took longer to get my tools and supplies together than the actual install.

Works Great!

Written By THOMAS, Belleville, NJ on Friday, March 31, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used the Interface to hook up a 30G Ipod video in my 05 Chrysler Pacifica. The only problem is that Crutchfield doesn't have a detailed installation guide for the Pacifica. I learned on the fly how to access the radio.
Listen up Pacifica owners: Carefully insert a screw driver wrapped in a cloth behind the trim bezel, left of the climate control. Pry outward to release a retainer clip. Pull outward on the bezel with your hands to continue loosning the bezel. Gentley pull upward to release bezel from bottom clip. Repeat on opposite side, but remove ignition bezel. Remove screws and pull out radio.Everything else should be smooth sailing at this point.
I secured the Interface box with hook & loop tape. I was able to run the Ipod cable into the glove box without any drilling or cutting. Total installation time was about one hour, but well worth it. Unit works great.

The adapter is wonderful...the hardest part to installing it was finding my screwdriver.

Connection with 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee OEM stereo a success.

Written By Shawn, Salem, OR on Monday, March 20, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The system works as described. I purchased the item for my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee because I was tired of lugging around my CD collection in the vehicle. Now I have my whole collection on my Gen 5 i-pod video. I chose the USA Spec over the Peripheral product because it offered the exact same functions for less, plus it has an additional RCA input. Here are the bullet points from the installation:
1. Installation was simple once I found a way to rout the control harness without removing the whole dash.
2. I found that the USA Spec didn't work when mounted vertically. It would only register when mounted horizontally (i.e., like sitting on a table).
3. Occasionally the source will cut out (like when I hit a bump). I'm not sure if this is because of the wires connecting somewhat loosely or if it's due to the way I installed it. Right now it's not frequent enough for me to return the item.
4. All factory controls, including steering wheel controls, work with the unit as described.
5. Works with Gen 5 i-pods. This was not listed in the specs but I figured I would take my chances.

The bottom line is that for the price you can't beat the functionality.

Best I've Tried!!

Written By R.J., West Hartford, CT on Saturday, February 25, 2006

I've tried the Alpine KCA-420i (garbage) with an Alpine head and just a simple RCA adapter for an Alpine in my former car and both left much to be desired. It was either use only the radio controls or only the iPod controls. This USA Spec unit is by far the best. I installed it in my '06 Jeep Wrangler in just over an hour (it's the first car audio installation I've ever done) with very little frustration or cursing. I was able to place the unit under the dash just in front of the center console. One piece of advice is to tape the cable connections to the unit...they come loose very easily. I use the unit on direct mode. That allows me to control everything (playlists, artists, genres, etc.) from the iPod, but also allows me to scan, seek and FF and RW using the radio controls. Nice simple unit.

USA Spec iPod® Interface for Chrysler

Written By redtop, WI on Saturday, February 18, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent unit. Good sound. Installation instructions could be better, though. 1. How to get radio out (i.e. pry off front cover, remove 4 radio mounting screws). 2. Looks like cooling fins on unit, but is it a problem to mount it near the heater duct under the dash. Wish "dip" switch was on front near iPod plug, so wouldn't have to pull unit out and turn around to change from Direct to Playlist.

Worth the Wait

Written By Ryan Dugger, Arkansas on Friday, February 10, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had to wait a few weeks because the interface was on back order, but it was worth it. I installed it in my 2004 Liberty on my lunch break, under an hour. I ran the connection cable from the stereo to the interface inside the dash on the passenger side and tucked the wire underneath the center console all the way back to the cd storage compartment.

I wanted to mount all the wires so that they were concealed, so I took out the screws mounting the cd storage to the console. Once removed, I connected the line to stereo to the interface. I attached the interface with some long zip ties to keep it stable. I drilled a small 1/2 inch hole in the lower part of the cd storage bin to feed the ipod connection cable through.

There is enough slack in the cable to pull out your ipod and click through your songs in direct mode or tuck it all away for hidden look.

The sound quality is great, much better than I expected. I have not messed with the playlist mode because the direct allows me to use the ipod controls to choose an artist/genre/playlist then I can skip through songs using the changer controls.

A bonus was that I did not realize that the interface also had an AUX input for XM, DVD player, or other MP3 players.

This is a great buy if you are wanting to keep the stock stereo look and integrate your ipod!

This little box is worth every penny.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in about an hour in my 2006 Jeep Liberty Sport CRD. Remember to put the Jeep in 2WD if its a 4WD Libby! Leaving it in Neutral will make your life easier too...

Install instructions were wonderful - no you dont need a pry tool, just unscrew the single screw and carefully pry off the trim around the edges where the radio meets the a/c controls, the other two are in the top corners. After removing the radio, I installed this in the nook to the passenger side using one zip-tie (connecting a hole in the interface to a pair of holes in the inside of the dash). A bit fiddly, but if you thread the wiring first, you'll be much happier.

Ive got the iPod wire going down the passenger side of the dash - down from the side of the glovebox - alongside the radio as its hollow there, then inserted under the trim in the center console coming up right next to the cup holder. Removing trim under glovebox helps with threading the wires - unscrew 2 screws, push the tab and pull down.

I've also hooked up an optional 6ft RCA-Headphone cable for future ideas incorporating a behind the seat DVD player. That was routed the same way and stored under the passenger seat for future use/manual iPod control.

This way I can remember to remove my iPod during the cold winter/toasty summer, yet leave it either in the cup holder or inserted into the CD storage bin for security if necessary (you can barely notice the wire).

PS the RND button on the radio is what controls the iPods Shuffle functionality - and I never knew the glovebox had a place to store the manual until now!

Excellent Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great product. I was a bit worried that it might not work with my video iPod, but there was no problem at all. The installation took about two hours, but most of the time was spent finding the ideal rout for the cable in my 2002 Liberty Limited.I ended up drilling a hole in the bottom of my CD rack in the center console and routing the cable up the transmission hump. (I just tucked the wire under the platic frame as I went.) I mounted the USA Spec unit below the radio toward the driver's side, above the peddles. This set-up took me a little longer to install, but the end result is great. I can pick a playlist on the iPod, place the iPod in the center console, and forget about it.

I am very happy to find that the seek buttons on the car receiver still work in direct mode. Thus I can set a playlist(or artist, albumn, all songs, etc) with the iPod controls and then put the iPod away. While I'm driving, I can skip songs on the playlist by using the reciever or the stereo controls on the steering wheele (very safe!). Right now I just configure the iPod to play all my songs and make sure it is on shuffle. If a song comes up that I am not in the mood for, I just hit seek on the stereo and another random song comes up.

The end result is I now have my entire music collection availiable in my car. There are no exposed wires or gear. I also no longer have to worry about charging the iPod through my computer. It charges as I drive.

Please note that I have no experience installing car radio gear, but I was able to install this. I do have a moderate amount of general technical ability.

Love it!!!

Easy to follow installation instructions for my '04 PT! Small enough to drop down and secure behind radio. Plenty of length on the connection cables for radio to unit to iPod! Great sound and easy to use! Highly recommended! Wow!

USA Spec iPod Interface Is Perfect For Linking Factory Stereo W/iPod

Written By erik, Kentucky on Thursday, December 01, 2005

I purchased the USA Spec iPod Interface, as I needed a high-quality way to link my new iPod with my Jeep's OEM stereo (the factory stereo features a subwoofer and CD player, but no cassette deck or audio inputs). Crutchfield's installation guide made the project a breeze, and I can now use my car's CD changer controls to control and listen to my iPod.

The sound quality's excellent, definitely as good as CD or better. Plus, unlike many of the wireless methods used to link an iPod with a car stereo, there's no fading, static or signal loss.

I definitely recommend checking out this module if you own an iPod and have a car stereo with a CD changer input.

Sounds good, works adequately

Written By Scott, Columbus, OH on Thursday, October 27, 2005

Got this last week and I am pleased. It installed very cleanly and easily. The sound is very good, much better than the internal CD player for some reason. I'm getting much clearer bass from this input. There are two control modes available, direct and playlist. I chose direct because I don't want to be restricted to controlling the iPod only from the changer controls, and I don't make much use of playlists. Mostly I just shuffle all. And when I do want to play something specific, the iPod interface still lets me do that.

I have noticed that the changer controls get 'confused' sometimes after a power-off/on, causing the iPod to pause when you select the changer and to unpause when you switch to another input. To fix it I just press play on the iPod and everything is back in sync.

All in all I'm very happy with this solution to my former pitiful lack if iPod integration.

1 question already asked

Does this product with iphone5 / lightning connection. Or do they carry the lightning cable to go with this product? [ Jim  Jan 30, 2014 ]
7 answers
  • Yes Jim, the USA Spec IPod Interface for Chrysler works fine with an iPhone 5S. I suggest you use the Apple converter and not one of the cheap versions as I understand they don't work. While at $30 the official version is expensive, it works as you expect. My CaseMate wood series case doesn't work with the adaptor and I have to crack the case to hook up so beware you may have case interference issues. Lightning connector extensions are available that may address this issue, but the one's I have seen get poor two star reviews, so I have not invested in this solution. I wish I had installed this interface earlier. For the money, this is the way to "upgrade" your old Dodge stereo to work with your iPhone or iPod. Since it uses the port and not the headphone jack, the sound is awesome. [ MARC F   Jan 31, 2014 ]
  • Yes it will work but one thing you got to have in mind is to use with auxyliary cord because the conector for iphone is different from old iphones to iphone 5 [ JORGE A   Jan 31, 2014 ]
  • Jim, The one I received did not include the new Lightning connector. However, they do state that it is compatible with an iPhone 5/5s, but requires the separate adapter to go from the old-style connector to the new Lightning connector. Here's the exact quote from their specs: "*Requires Apple Lightning to 30-pin Adapter cable (472LTN230P, sold separately)." Hope this helps. Love my connector that went into a 2003 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon - it's awesome! Tim [ TIMOTHY   Jan 30, 2014 ]
  • The cable with mine only handles the older iPhone connection. But I saw at Target that Apple makes a simple converter you can put between your Iphone5 and the old connector. [ DAVE   Jan 30, 2014 ]
  • This will not work with I5 connection. USA Spec should have an adapter, or replacement cable for the control unit. [ JOHN   Jan 30, 2014 ]
  • This does work well with the iPhone 5. It does not come with the lightning connector but but I just got the adapter from Apple and snapped it on and it works perfect. [ ABRAHAM   Jan 30, 2014 ]
  • I bought my unit to go with an Ipod Classic so from that standpoint, I am no help. However, I can tell you that when I received my product, I contacted the USA Products tech line with a few of my own questions and they were both friendly and helpful. I suggest that you do the same just to avoid having to return a product because of compatibility problems. If the unit will work with your hardware, I think that you will be very pleased with it's performance. [ NEIL   Jan 30, 2014 ]
