USA Spec

Our take on the USA Spec iPod® Interface

You can take it with you. Just because you've got a factory radio in your General Motors car, doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod (and the hours and hours of music it contains) at home. Just install USA SPEC's iPod interface — it not only allows you to listen to all your favorite tunes through your car's speakers, it even lets you control song and playlist selections right from your radio. And with your iPhone® connected, you can even stream music from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livio Radio, iHeartRadio, and more.

Just mount the compact interface box in a hidden location in your vehicle, and connect the adapter cable to the CD changer input on your compatible GM factory radio. Plug your iPod into the interface — you can control volume, source, song selection, and up to five different play lists right from the radio. Or switch to "Direct Mode" and use your iPod to access all your songlists. And the interface charges your iPod while it's connected.

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle. As the iPod interface uses the CD changer port, any existing changer that you have must be disconnected.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

Highlights:

  • iPod connection adapter for select GM factory stereos
  • manage the iPod via your radio's CD changer controls
  • adjust volume, track up/down, fast forward/rewind
  • use up to five playlists (select five favorites, or Auto Playlist will let you choose from the first five on your iPod)
  • when iPhone is connected, you can stream tunes from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livo Radio, and iHeartRadio
  • Dual Mode allows you to control everything via the iPod itself, giving you access to all playlists
  • compatible with all iPod and iPod mini models equipped with a dock connector and iPod software update 2004-04-28, or higher
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Features

Overview: This adapter allows an iPod with a dock connector to be connected to and controlled by the factory radio in select GM vehicles. Please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm compatibility with your vehicle.

CD Changer Port: Depending on the vehicle, the adapter may use the factory radio's CD Changer port or XM Radio port. In many cases this interface enables the iPod to coexist with the GM navigation system, CD changer, XM radio receiver, DVD system, and On-Star.

iPod Compatibility: The PA11-GM is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features when connected to a compatible GM factory radio (as of Oct 2011):

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to revert to the older software version or wait until a newer software update is available.

Control Modes: The iPod interface adapter features the following control modes:

  • Playlist Mode: You can create up to 5 favorite mobile playlists, then use your radio's CD changer controls to access and control your playlist.
  • Direct Mode: Gives you complete control of your iPod while it is connected to the factory radio. Your iPod is not locked out while connected to the radio and you are able to manually access your complete iPod content. The Radio still can adjust song up/down random or shuffle play but you can manually control your iPod and select any playlist, genre or Artist of your choice.
  • Hybrid Mode: Combines features of Direct Mode and Playlist Mode. You can create and access your favorite mobile playlist or directly access all your iPod content manually on your iPod. Your iPod displays song title information and iPod is not locked, so the iPod can be operated manually at all times.

App Streaming (in Direct Mode): Direct mode also lets you listen to the sound from your iPhone's downloaded music apps (such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, etc.) through your factory head unit & speakers. You will continue to control your iPhone's apps & view song/artist information from its touchscreen.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need applicable music service accounts.

Playlist Names: In order for the adapter/factory radio to recognize a playlist, it should be named GM1... through GM5... Text can follow the GM name and number, such as GM4_artistname or GM3-jazz. For a given disc slot (1-5), if there is no playlist named GM followed by that number, that disc slot will play the first available playlist on the iPod (the second blank slot will play the second available playlist, etc).

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod input on the PA11-GM there is an auxiliary input (RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, etc. The aux input is accessed at disc 6 track 1 using the factory radio controls. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod connected. When using the aux input in the Playlist Mode, the Play All mode is moved to the Disc 5 slot and the GM5 custom playlist is lost.

Playlist Mode Controls: In Playlist Mode the iPod is controlled using the CD Changer commands on the factory radio. Use the Radio's Disc Select controls to access the 5 custom mobile playlists, the Play All mode, or the auxiliary input. Track select, forward and backward, works just like on a CD. Other commands include shuffle play, scan (plays first 10 seconds of each track), Fast Track Search (skips forward or backward 10 tracks), and Fast Forward/Fast Reverse within a song (available in shuffle mode only).

Battery Charge: The PA11-GM charges iPod battery when connected. Charging stops after 1 hour of non-use to prevent draining the vehicle's battery.

Pause: When a non-iPod source is selected on the radio (AM/FM/Cass/CD) the iPod pauses.

Resume: If the iPod is not disconnected after use, it will resume playing where it left off when you restart the vehicle.

Outstanding In Every Way

Vehicle....................2003 Chevy Silverado SS w/ Bose package and XM
Total Install Time....1 hour and 30 minutes

I purchased this item after having bad experiences with a variety of mp3 solutions over the past four years. Let me tell you, this does what it says, and then some!

Having popped the dash off numerous times, I knew the sweet spots so I didn't have the same problems a first-time installer might. Also, the harness was very easy to hook up because you couldn't get it wrong. The majority of the time was spent seeing my Dremel tool give its last gasps of breath (it has served me well) making a few holes in the cigarette lighter console for a nice, neat fit.

They even sent me an upgraded version for free. This upgrade gives you the "Hybrid Mode", which is like the Playlist mode described in other reviews/information, but you also have the power of Direct Mode simultaneously.

Sound Quality is digital greatness. iPod vibrates the mirrors when hardly turned up at all instead of on full blast with lots of static from a RoadMate.

I'd give this thing 6 stars if they'd let me!

After many hours of frustration and agony I decided to return the Peripheral iPod adaptor and try the SPEC USA. I got to say that the difference between the two is fenomenal. Along with the great customer service from Crutchfield, it made the istall a breeze. I sugest this product to anyone that has an '05 Trailblazer.

03 Tahoe Tips

Written By Dan, Austin, TX on Tuesday, August 28, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

My advice is to remove the a/c head unit in addition to the radio head unit. This will give you additional room to manipulate the wiring harness behind the radio. In my case, I could not remove the radio without this step; however it proved to be very beneficial when reinstalling the radio with the additional harness attached. As other reviewers stated, it is a very tight space when pushing the unit back into place. My solution was to move the Tahoe's factory 12-pin connection and the PA11's radio hookup behind the rear metal backstop in the empty cavity to the left of the unit where the 24-pin factory connector was located. Thus all original and add on wiring was in the deep left cavity, allowing the radio head unit to slide right into place.

Also, I mounted the PA11 unit in the cavity to the bottom right of the cavity under the cubby hole (to the right bottom of my a/c headunit and in between the glove compartment and directly behind the console). I used double sided foam tape to secure the unit to the sidewall. Then I ran the iPod cable in between the console and a/c headunit in a space where the console meets the bottom part of the dashboard. There is a perfect gap even when the faceplate is reattached.

I chose the direct mode and it works great. I do no have an XM unit, so installion was a snap once I figured out the a/c trick. Good luck to all - this is a great device.

I recommend reading ALL the reviews before purchasing or installing the product... with that said, like everbody else, the hardest part is getting the headunit back in because of the additional wiring harness.I used a small diameter cardboard tube from a laundrymat clothes hanger to guide/push the wiring harness in the direction I wanted it to go (the big harness to the left and the rest right). I used the direct mode, as it seems to be best suited for the intended use of my Ipod. I have an 2003 Avalanche with the premium BOSE sound system w/6 DisK CD and no XM or On Star, and there is not a whole lot of room behind the glove box, but thats where I mounted the interface unit, with zip ties to another wiring harness, until I'm sure it will work flawlessly. I also got the Pro-Fit grip mount and vehicle specific mounting plate, for the professional install "look", but it would be just as well sitting on the center console, if you'd like to save sixty bucks. The Ipod cable that came with mine, dosen't seem to go in all the way into the interface unit, which causes a poor connection and a channel to cut out occasionally, and I intend to ask for another on Monday.

Good Luck!

This is exactly what I needed to interface my IPOD with the factory stereo in my 03 Silverado.

Be advised that you do not need the mini stereo to dual RCA cable. Music will play via the charging cable supplied with the kit. I wish I would have known this as it would have saved me 20$.

Out of the box,my 581PA11GM was set to display the Song info on the stereo but I didnt care for that to happen and I wanted to be able to change the song via the steeringwheel controls. This was accomplished by a simple dip switch change on the back of the device.

Bottom line... If you have an ipod and you want to connect it to your stock head unit, get this!

This product is truly amazing. The integrated features via my GM Bose system work flawlesly. Installation was a walk in the park. I did have a right channel failure about 6 weeks after install, but the Crutchifield team resolved the problem and sent me another unit within days, and without any hastle! Crutchfield's customer service is SECOND TO NONE.

‘06 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew-Cab, factory AM/FM/1-CD/XM radio. My first recommendation is to print all of these reviews so you can reference them. The help from these other reviews was great, especially as far as the location of the XM unit - behind the glove box, as mentioned. Ill try not to repeat what has already been said. The R & R of the head unit was easy, even getting it back in was simple - just pay attention to wire-routing and take your time. I put the USA unit right next to the XM unit, and ran the iPod cable inbetween the console and the dash - just slid it thru the gap between the two panels, and let it sit on my center console. If any cables will POSSIBLY rub against any of the sharp metal edges present under the dash make sure you protect the wires with a shield of some type to prevent a future problem. My USA unit is easy to access if I want to change the dip-switches or add the RCA input - which you probably dont need. I opted for the "Playlist Mode" install, where you cut the XM wire. After doing this and testing it, I reset the dip-switches and now use it in "Direct Mode". I prefer this because it gives me much more control over the song selection - you still have full control independently over the iPod (to pick a specific song/artist/album/playlist/etc.), and you can still skip forward or backward over songs thru the GM head unit and/or steering wheel controls. Often Ill set the iPod on "Shuffle" and leave it alone and just skip over songs I may not want to hear. In Playlist mode, the only way I could “read the song info” on the head unit was by touching the “Info” button on the head unit

Crutchfield Customer Review

I am a big fan of these devices. This is my 2nd one. Nothing beats the sound quality. I had tried FM transmitters and they were horrible. My first USA Spec IPOD Adapter went in my '01 Suburban (single cd, OnStar, no XM). I simply used the CD changer port on my head unit. The install sheets from Crutchfield made it easy. The 2nd USA Spec IPOD Adapter went in my '06 Colorado (6 disc changer, OnStar, FM). The hardest part on the Colorado install was finding the XM receiver. In the Colorado it is located above the roof of the glove box. Take the glove box out and then pull the roof down and towards the front seat. Its plastic, made to bend and is held in place with two clips. If you don't have an XM subscription you don't have to splice anything - simply disconnect the antenna lead and you're all set. In both vehicles I put the adapter under the consoles. In the Suburban the cup holder easily pulls out and in the Colorado the tray easily pulls out of the console.

Install was very simple and unit works awesome with my iPod Touch. I'm using this in my 2006 Pontiac GrandPrix with the monsoon system. Sound quality seems almost better than a C.D. Definitly worth the money.

IPOD CONTROL GMC 2003

Written By James, Oklahoma on Thursday, February 21, 2008

This is a great unit. I looked around for about 4 weeks before buying this. I have a 2003 GMC..... factory radio CD6-with out XM.
The install was very easy. connections easy as well. come with all the wire harness needed. I mounted the unit under the cup holder in the front console.I ran the Ipod cable thru a hole I drilled at the top of the lowere cubby hole . When Im not using the IPOD I just roll the wire up and leave it in the cubby. I set the switches to work with xm, which I didnt know I had..and set the aux switch to on. I mounted a 3.5 plug to the dash and connected the rca 's to the unit's aux. now I can connect my GPS unit to the trucks radio as well as the IPOD. Works with the sterring wheel controls and direct from the IPOD. It displays the song title and name of song on the factory radio... Great deal and grreat price
