USA Spec

Our take on the USA Spec IPOD Interface

You can take it with you! Just because you've got a factory radio in your car, doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod (and the hours and hours of music it contains) at home. Just install USA SPEC's iPod interface — it not only allows you to listen to all your favorite tunes through your car's speakers, it even lets you control song and playlist selections right from your radio.

Just mount the compact interface box in a hidden location in your vehicle, and connect the adapter cable to the CD changer input on your compatible Volkswagen factory radio. Plug your iPod into the interface — you can control volume, source, song selection, and up to five different play lists right from the radio. And the interface charges your iPod while it's connected!

Please enter your vehicle information or call a Sales Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle. As the iPod interface uses the CD changer port, any existing changer that you have must be disconnected.

Features

Overview: This adapter allows an iPod with a dock connector to be connected to and controlled by the factory radio in select VW models. Please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm compatibility with your vehicle.

iPod Compatibility: This PA11-VW interface is compatible with iPod (G3 and G4) and iPod mini models featuring a dock connector. The functionality and features of the iPod interface described in the owner's manual are confirmed with firmware version 1.3 for iPod mini, firmware version 2.3 and 3.0.2 for iPod, and firmware version 1.1 for iPod photo.

Playback Modes: The iPod adapter has two playback modes; Direct and Playlist.

Direct Mode: In Direct Mode the track up/down and fast forward and reverse buttons on the factory radio control the iPod. All the controls on the iPod also work so selection of playlist, and any other playback functions can be controlled there. In this mode the iPod is accessed at disc 5, track 1 using the CD changer source on the factory radio.

Playlist Mode: The factory radio can access six discs when a CD changer is connected, this is synonymous with six playlists on the iPod. In Playlist Mode the first five CD slots access custom playlists arranged using iTunes software. The sixth playlist is a Play All command which plays all the songs on the iPod. In Playlist Mode the iPod enters an External Control mode and neither the controls on the iPod nor the display is active. There is no limit to the number of songs on a playlist, but the song number display on most factory radios is only two digits so after 99 the display restarts at 01.

Playlist Names: In order for the adapter/factory radio to recognize a playlist, it should be named VW1... through VW5... Text can follow the VW name and number, such as VW3_artistname or VW2-jazz. For a given disc slot (1-5), if there is no playlist named VW followed by that number, that disc slot will play the first available playlist on the iPod (the second blank slot will play the second available playlist, etc).

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod input on the PA11-VW there is an auxiliary input (RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, etc. The aux input is accessed at disc 6 track 1 using the factory radio controls. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod connected. When using the aux input in the Playlist Mode, the Play All mode is moved to the Disc 5 slot and the VW5 custom playlist is lost.

Playlist Mode Controls: In Playlist Mode the iPod is controlled using the CD Changer commands on the factory radio. Use the Radio's Disc Select controls to access the 5 custom mobile playlists, the Play All mode, or the auxiliary input. Track select, forward and backward, works just like on a CD. Other commands include shuffle play, scan (plays first 10 seconds of each track), Fast Track Search (skips forward or backward 10 tracks), and Fast Forward/Fast Reverse within a song (available in shuffle mode only).

Battery Charge: The PA11-VW charges iPod battery when connected. Charging stops after 1 hour of non use to prevent draining the vehicle's battery.

Note: The PA11-VW requires an optional cable (item # 581CBP85) to charge the iPod nano 4th generation, iPod touch 2nd generation, or the iPhone 3G.

CD Changer Port: The adapter uses the factory radio's CD Changer port so if the vehicle has an existing outboard CD Changer it must be disconnected.

Pause: When a non iPod source is selected on the radio (AM/FM/Cass/CD) the iPod pauses.

Resume: If the iPod is not disconnected after use, it will resume playing where it left off when you restart the vehicle.

Perfect For 03 GTI

Written By Chris, Hollywood on Friday, November 03, 2006

As per the previous reviews, this unit obviusly has some problems with certain VW models, but in my 03 GTI it's golden.
I ran the CD changer line under the back seat to the adaptor box (placed under the drivers seat), drilled a 1/2" hole in the side of the center console/arm rest, ran the iPod line through, set the box on direct control and now I have an iPod, out of sight and easy to reach that plays with perfect sound quality directly through my head unit.
Couldn't be easier or work better.
No problems with any interference, connected to rear CD changer plug with no need to touch the head unit.
Track skip and playlist select work exactly as advertised, ff/rw through individual songs is a bit sketchy when using the factroy controls in my case, but since I'm controling the iPod directly, it's not an issue.
For the 03 GTI with the Monsoon system this is highly recommended.

Works Great

Written By David, Pittsburgh, PA on Monday, October 23, 2006

This unit works as advertised. If you have an iPod or satellite radio this is really the best and only way you should interface it to your factory radio. It was very easy to install and worth every penny.

Easy Installation, Great Sound Quality

Written By Ramon, Cayey, Puerto Rico on Sunday, October 22, 2006

Installation took 15 minutes, Just Plug it and listens.
I read on a review after buying it that "you don't need the radio removal tools" and its true if you have a Volkswagen you will not need them. I am very happy with my purchase and I think im going to be a Crutchfield client for life.

AAhhh I almost forgot: I have a friend who bought the "original" volkswagen adapter elsewhere. He had to remove the radio, he don't has an optional aux input and paid 30 bucks more plus shipping.

Excellent upgrade from a cassette adapter

Written By garyd, San Diego, CA on Friday, September 29, 2006

This product delivers as promised. The sound is a big improvement over the cassette adapter I had been using. The abilitiy to move tracks, select playlists, shuffle, etc right through the stereo have allowed me to store the ipod in my glove box. Now I don't have to hide the ipod from view everytime I park my car in a public place. Overall I'm very happy with this product so far. The only thing I really miss so far is the comprehensive functionality you have when using the iPod controls directly but overall it is a good tradeoff.

USA Spec IPOD Interface

Written By Brian, Pittsburgh, PA on Tuesday, September 12, 2006

I used to use the Monster FM transmitter, but I decided to step it up a notch, as the sound quality coming from it wasnt super, and sometimes i'd get FM radio noise instead of my ipod music.
Installation was a breeze, I had my stereo playing my ipod in no time. You can skip songs using the track skip buttons on your steering wheel or deck. I personally don't use the "playlist" mode, I prefer the direct mode so I can just pick whatever I want to play directly from the ipod.

The reason I gave this 4 stars is because, like a few other reviews here have said, I was getting some interference through the interface. Called Crutchfield and they sent me the stereo removal tools free of charge, and directed me to USA Spec to get the cable (CAS-VW6). Cable from USA Spec was $14.50 including shipping.

Anyway, after installing that cable the noise went away and it sounds great! I highly recommend this if you still have the factory stereo installed in your VW.

What to do if you have no CD changer cabling

Written By Brian, Charlottesville, VA on Sunday, July 16, 2006

I purchased the USA Spec PA11-VW Ipod interface hoping it would be an easy install. My 2001 VW Passat station wagon has a spot for the CD changer near the AMP that came with my Monsoon factory-installed stero, so I assumed it was pre-wired for the CD changer. Apparently not. A USA Spec tech support guy says he has NEVER seen a VW without the cabling there. However, another Crutchfield reviewer of this product reported the same problem. To resolve this problem, USA Spec suggested I get another connector cable, the CDL-VW6. Once I had the cable, I figured out that it connects to the back of the Monsoon CD player and not the radio. However, now that I finally have it all wired, everything seems to work.

Video iPod / 2000 Jetta / Monsoon system / trunk CD changer

Written By Bill, Cary, NC on Thursday, July 13, 2006

Ordered a USA Spec iPod Interface (Model PA11-VW) online. Product was delivered in four days. Installation was easy...just connect to CD changer plug in trunk, but there was a problem...noisy interference whether the engine was running or not. Called USA Spec Tech Support. They said unit was OK...the noise was a common problem with some VWs and that I needed a different cable (CAS-VW6) to fix it. USA Spec charges $19.50 for the cable...not much choice, so I ordered it. Second problem: new cable connects behind radio, not in trunk. Called Crutchfield, and they sent absolutely essential radio removal tools for free. New cable and tools both arrived in 4 days. With tools, installation of new cable was easy, and the interference was gone, but I feel USA Spec should have supplied the cable gratis, like Crutchfield did the tools, or there should be some sort of disclaimer that states the extra-cost cable may be required in some cases. By the way, the sound is OUTSTANDING! Super fidelity. I love it. This is definitely the way to go if you care about CD-quality sound from your iPod in your car.

Great product, easy install, great sound

Written By dewitt, Summit, New Jersey on Friday, April 28, 2006

I can't believe how pleased I am with this product. I have a 2000 Audi A4 with the Bose system and CD changer in the trunk. Cruthfield included the adapter cable to convert from the factory 13 pin DIN to the 9 pin connector. All I had to do was remove the factory cd changer and plug in the interface. Thats it. Great sound, all my songs and easy to control from the radio. Best of all the IPOD is safely hidden away in the trunk.

Awesome Sound and Simple Installation

Written By Charlie, Twinsburg, OH on Thursday, April 27, 2006

When buying my new car I was really looking for one that had built in iPod functionality. I ultimately chose a car with better fuel economy instead.

Naturally, I turned to Crutchfield for advice in getting my iPod pumped into the factory radio of my VW Golf TDI. The USA Spec IPOD Interface offered the features I was looking for at a fair price.

Installation was incredibly simple, especially since my application did not require the removal of the radio.

The fact that this product allows the user to choose if they want to have control of the iPod through the factory radio (giving up some flexibility) or keep full control on the iPod is a great feature. Additionally, this unit provides the user with an auxiliary input. This added benefit will be great for porting the sound of the kid's DVD player into the stereo during trips.

I have used other manufacturer's auxiliary inputs, FM modulators and cassette adapters and, frankly, I have been disappointed. I cannot stress enough how happy I am with the USA Spec IPOD Interface. There was no degradation in sound quality and the installation was a cinch.

I highly recommend this product.

Great sound and control and simple installation

Written By Ahsan, Sterling, VA on Thursday, April 20, 2006

I purchased this iPod adapter because I wanted the best possible sound via my 2004.5 Jetta GLI's Monsoon system. And this is only possible through the one auxiliary port which is in the trunk and usually occupied with a CD Changer. I sold my CD changer a year ago to install Sirius via a Blitzsafe adapter, and the sound was phenomenal. However, I recently got an iPod and wanted to have both Sirius and iPod in my car. So I came across this USA Spec iPod adapter which had an extra auxiliary input which I used for my Sirius radio. The sound quality is perfect on my Jetta's stock Monsoon system. I like that I can scroll through songs in a playlist via the Jetta's head unit. All I can say is that the USA Spec is the best solution if you want both iPod and satellite radio, and I am fairly certain its the best solution even if all you have is an iPod. Not only does it provide you the best possible sound, it charges and controls your iPod at the same time. Perfect.
