About the USA SPEC iPod® Interface for VW and Audi

Ken Nail
You can take it with you. Just because you've got a factory radio in your Volkswagen or Audi, doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod at home. Just install USA SPEC's Volkswagen PA11 iPod interface — it allows you to listen to all your favorite tunes through your car's speakers, and to control song and playlist selections right from your radio.

Just mount the compact interface box in a hidden location in your vehicle, and connect the included VW6 adapter cable to the CD changer input on your compatible 1998-up Volkswagen factory radio. Plug your iPod into the interface and you'll control and charge your iPod while you drive. And with your iPhone® connected, you can even stream music from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livio Radio, iHeartRadio, and more.

The PA11 adapter features two different playlist options: create up to five mobile playlists and use the vehicle's CD changer controls to access them, or use the "Direct" mode to select your playlist with the iPod's controls. Either way, you'll always have full control of all iPod functions, including random or shuffle play. The interface also provides an additional auxiliary input — so you can connect other devices as well.

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle. As the iPod interface uses the CD changer port, any existing changer that you have must be disconnected.

Note: If you have a newer iPod/iPhone device with a Lightning connector, then you will also need Apple's Lightning to 30-pin adapter. Be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

Notes:

  • *Requires Apple Lightning to 30-pin Adapter (sold separately).
  • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Playback Modes: The PA11-VW6 provides two ways to control and access music on your iPod through the factory radio: Direct Mode and Playlist Mode:

  • Playlist Mode: The iPod is operated and controlled like a CD changer. You can access a maximum of four playlists from the radio. The iPod's controls are not functional.
  • Direct Mode: Search and select music on your iPod as you would normally, and all control functions on the iPod are available for use. The track up/down, fast forward and fast reverse buttons on the radio and steering wheel can be used to control the iPod. If you wish to play free WiFi music streams, such as Pandora, from your iPod touch or iPhone, you should use the Direct Mode.

App Streaming (in Direct Mode): Direct mode also lets you listen to the sound from your iPhone's downloaded music apps (such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, etc.) through your factory head unit & speakers. You will continue to control your iPhone's apps from its touchscreen.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need applicable music service accounts.

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod input on the PA11-VW6 there is an auxiliary input (RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, etc. The aux input is accessed at disc 6 track 1 using the factory radio controls. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod connected.

Battery Charge: The PA11-VW6 charges the iPod battery when connected. Charging stops one hour after the iPod is paused or the ignition is turned off to prevent draining the vehicle's battery.

CD Changer Port: The adapter uses the factory radio's CD Changer port so if the vehicle has an existing outboard CD Changer it must be disconnected. An in-dash CD changer is not affected.

Pause: When a non-iPod source is selected on the radio (AM/FM/Cass/CD) the iPod pauses.

Resume: If the iPod is not disconnected after use, it will resume playing where it left off when you restart the vehicle.

Q
Does this work with the iPhone 6 plus?

I have not tried it, but at a minimum, you will need the Apple 30-pin to Lightning adapter ($30) because this kit comes with a cable that has a 30-pin connector. You will be able to connect to the 6 Plus into the audio in of this unit with a standard 3.5mm stereo to RCA stereo audio cable for about $10, but you will not be able to control the 6 Plus this way.
andrew  Dec 12, 2015

Ya but you need to buy the adapter from Apple that goes from iPhone 4 to lightning. They arnt expensive at all. It works for me :-)
scott  Dec 12, 2015
A
Yes, it should. We use it with a 5 and a 6s and it works ok. You'll need a Lightning to 30 pin adapter since the supplied cable is 30 pin. The adapter also has to be one of the good ones, the expensive apple ones have a DAC built in which is needed to convert the digital audio output into an analog signal that the iPod interface can use. The cheap 30 pin adapters don't have a DAC which is why they are cheap. We've also found that the following sequence of powering on the interface and stereo work best. We turn the radio on first, usually on an FM station. Then plug the phone into the interface cable. Then, after a second or two, select CD on the radio face. That gives us the most reliable results of getting straight to disc 5 and playing music. It may not make much sense now but it will when you get the interface and start messing around with it.
matthew w  Dec 12, 2015
A
yes, but you need an adapter to go from the larger to the smaller connector on the newer iPhones The cheap adapters allow only for charging. I purchased an Apple adapter for use with my iPhone 5

Can I remove the 6 CD player from my Monsoon stereo and connect this unit using those cables or I must remove the radio to make the connections?

Q
I'm looking for the best suited adapter for a galaxy s5 to work with my 2006 passat?
merrie  Jan 06, 2015

A
I'm not framiliar with the Passat radio but I bought this for my 2006 Audi A4. It's a good adapter for older iPods with the wide connection. It charges while hooked up but does not charge android phones while hooked up. I haven't been able to troubleshoot why I dont get much base out of the speakers through the adapter. You want the "best" sound buy a head unit with auxiliary or pre hard wired connections that you can hook your phone up to.

Not sure if this will help, Merrie, but my son had this item installed on his 2005 (old style) Jetta with factory Monsoon radio, and, so far as I know, it works great!

This product in the pic worked fine for me and I did the installation myself
mike  Jan 08, 2015
A
Be very careful about which set you order. I ordered one for my 2005 Passat that ended up not fitting because I did not understand that it would not work with my configuration--the Monsoon stereo w/ single CD and cassette, but no rear-mounted CD changer. I had to return it because the interface would not plug into my stock stereo.

I use this interface on a Passat & a 2006 Tundra It allows me to plug in an Android phone and connect with all of the vehicles speakers in a hands free manor. Takes a little getting used to but very helpful for Pandora, IHeart radio etc.
dale  Jan 08, 2015

I used this kit in a 2005 Passat GLX, which is a different car (old body style and last year of that style) from the 2006. I also used it to connect apple products. With those caveats, this system was easy to install with the typically fine Crutchfield adapters and instructions. You get a cable to connect an iPod or iPhone plus a jack to connect to the headphone output of almost any sound-making device. If they make a version for android devices, I recommend the kit highly.

SRory I never used it cause it was the wrong one. I've yet to return it.
