Our take on the USA Spec iPod® Interface

by Robert Ferency-Viars
USA Spec

Why would I need an iPod® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

You have a factory radio in your car, but that doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod at home. Install USA Spec's iPod interface and listen to your favorite tunes through your car's speakers. You can control song selection, and up to five different playlists right from the radio, including shuffle mode. The interface also charges your iPod while it's connected. Warranty: 1 year.

Please enter your vehicle information or call a Sales Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle. The iPod interface uses the CD changer port, so any existing changer that you have must be disconnected.

Features

Overview: This interface connects your iPod to select Toyota audio systems. Its on-board software translates commands from your Toyota radio's CD-changer controls into commands the iPod understands. This interface enables the iPod to take the place of a Toyota CD-changer or co-exist with a factory Toyota slave CD-changer and provides the following benefits:

  • Directs the iPod's audio output to your Toyota's vehicle audio system for optimal sound quality playback.
  • Controls the iPod via vehicle's radio and steering wheel controls (when applicable).
  • Charges the iPod's internal battery, and charging stops automatically at one hour after the iPod is paused. The iPod goes into sleep mode when charging stops.

iPod Compatibility: The interface is compatible with the following generation 3 and later iPod models.

  • iPod Photo
  • iPod Video
  • iPod U2
  • iPod mini
  • iPod nano (1st, 2nd and 3rd generation)
  • iPod classic
  • iPod touch
  • iPhone

Note: The iPod classic, touch, nano 3rd generation and iPhone will not function when the interface is in Hybrid mode due to software changes in the newer iPods.

Vehicle Compatibility: The PA12-TOY interface is compatible with the following vehicles:

  • 1998-2007 Toyota 4Runner
  • 1998-2007 Toyota Avalon (Aux source only)
  • 1998-2007 Toyota Camry
  • 1998-2007 Toyota Corolla, Echo
  • 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser
  • 2001-2007 Toyota Highlander
  • 1998-2007 Toyota Land Cruiser
  • 2005-2007 Toyota Matrix
  • 1998-2004 Toyota MR2, Celica
  • 2004-2007 Toyota Prius
  • 1998-2005 Toyota RAV4
  • All model Years Toyota Scions
  • 1998-2007Toyota Sequoia, Tundra
  • 1998-2007 Toyota Sienna
  • 1998-2007 Toyota Solara
  • 1998-2007 Toyota Tacoma
  • 2007 Toyota Yaris
Note: The PA12-TOY is not compatible with the Avalon navigation radio. Please use Crutchfield's "Outfit My Car" Link to confirm compatibility with your vehicle.

Operation Modes: The iPod interface adapter features the following modes of operation.

  • Playlist Mode: You can create up to 5 favorite mobile playlist then use your radio's CD changer controls to access and control your playlist.
  • Direct Mode: Gives you complete control of your iPod while it is connected to the factory radio. Your iPod is not locked out while connected to the radio and you are able to manually access your complete iPod content. The Radio still can adjust song up/down random or shuffle play but you can manually control your iPod and select any playlist, genre or Artist of your choice.
  • Hybrid Mode: Combines features of Direct Mode and Playlist Mode. You can create and access your favorite mobile playlist or directly access all your iPod content manually on your iPod. Your iPod displays song title information and iPod is not locked, so the iPod can be operated manually at all times.

iPod Text: Pressing the TEXT button on your factory Toyota radio while your iPod plays in the Playlist mode, allows the artist name and song title to be displayed on your factory radio. The Artist name is displayed at the first time press of the TEXT button and song title is displayed at the second time press of the TEXT button. The Playlist disc number and track number will be displayed at the third time press of the TEXT button.

Note: Track search by artist, song title or album are not supported. Some of the older design Toyota radios do not have the TEXT button feature.

iPod Playback: All audio tracks on the iPod will be played at Disc 6. The track order is determined by the default order on the iPod. Selecting discs 1 through 5 on the factory radio will allow playback of 5 playists on the iPod if the Aux Input is not selected. You can select a playlist by pressing the Disc Up or Disc Down buttons. Playlists which are created for direct access must be designated with the word "TOYOTA" and the disc number. If no "TOYOTA" playlists are designated, the first five playlists on the iPod are accessible from the Disc 1 through Disc 5 buttons.

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod input on the PA12-TOY there is an auxiliary input (stereo RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, or game system. The aux input is selected at CD 6 Track 1 using the factory radio controls. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod connected. To use the auxiliary input on the interface, dip switch #1 must be set to the "Off" position.

Note: When the Aux input is used, the "All Tracks" playlist is moved to Disc 5, and playlist "TOYOTA5" is lost.

Controls: The factory radio's controls give you access to the following iPod functions:

  • Scan: plays first 10 seconds of each track
  • Random (Shuffle): songs are played back in random order (some radios have a "P scan" button for this function)
  • Track Up/Down: the "Next" button advances to the next track in the playlist; the "Prev" button allows you to jump to the beginning of the currently playing song
  • Fast Track Search: the "Fwd" or "Rev" button will advance or retreat through the tracks in increments of 10 (i.e. 04, 14, 24...).
  • Fast Forward/Fast Reverse Play: While in Random mode, press the forward or backward button to fast forward or fast reverse through the current song.
Note: Repeat play is not supported by this interface. Switching to another source, such as AM/FM, CD, or Cassette, puts the iPod into pause mode.

The instructions were clear and installation was almost too easy. I didn't have to run a ground or power wire. Just snapped the connector into the back of the factory radio. I would highly recommend it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The product works great and does everything explained on the product information. On my vehicle, installation took about 15 minutes (it takes longer to get your dash apart than it does to install the equipment) It truely is a plug and play device. Once in a while the shuffle feature will mess up and repeat itself, but its never been a problem. Its nice to keep the Ipod hidden away and still have the ability to switch songs. The sound is crystal clear unlike FM transmitters that come and go depending on the area you're in. I would recommend this product to anyone looking to hook an Ipod up to a car stereo.

Great product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great little device. I installed it in my wife's Prius and it works just as it should. It produces CD quality sound from the factory head unit. The Interaction with the screen, radio buttons and steering wheel controls is just as advertised.

This can be installed by a do-it-yourselfer but if you are queasy about tearing into your car you might want to have it installed at a shop. Before installing you should do an Internet search on how to disassemple the Prius dash. It's not rocket science but you might be surprised at how much plastic you have to remove to get to the back of your factory radio. In reality, it's more of a phychological barrier than a technical one - so be prepared for an adventure.

Great Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just got done installing this product in my 2006 Toyota Tacoma access cab. The install was simple and straight forward. Definitely plug and play. The hardest part was deciding where I wanted the box to mount. I ended up locating it under the center console and fed the I-pod wire into the center storage box. The cord is long enough for anyone in the truck to control the I-pod no matter what seat they're in. I used the free auxiliary input to connect my XM radio. It sounds much better than the FM modulator that came with the XM. I have yet to find any faults with this product.

Satisfied NEW Customer

Written By dcw1976, Columbus, Ohio on Tuesday, October 23, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own a 2007 Toyota Corolla. My parents gave me an XM radio 2-3 years ago for Xmas. I also own a video ipod. I had been considering a new car stereo system ever since I got the 07 Corolla. However, I wasn't really excited about dropping $$ for a new head unit, installation, etc so that I could direct connect my sat. radio, ipod, etc. (FM transmitters just don't work well as Columbus is a pretty dense radio market).

I happened across this adapter...researched it a bit...and finally ordered if from Crutchfield. I got the unit in two days.

It took me about 30 minutes to install and get the unit up and running. The instructions (including pictures) provided by Crutchfield were excellent.

The unit works as advertised. My XM radio unit and ipod are both connected. I use my dash controls to switch between Radio, CD, Ipod, or XM easily and everything works as expected.

The sound quality of the XM radio and Ipod is consistent with the in dash CD changer.

Having had some pretty bad experiences with online retailers...I am always hesitant to try a new retailer. I fully expect to order from Crutchfield again.

I would highly recommend this adapter (given you verify that it works with your vehicle) to anyone looking for a similar solution.

And, so far, Crutchfield gets an A+.

Very Happy

Written By Dale, Manassas, VA on Saturday, September 29, 2007

I bought the interface for my Ipod (multiple) and satellite receiver. The installation was clear and simple. The instructions provided were for my specific vehicle. The interface performs as expected using CD1-5 for the first five playlists (once named in Itunes), displays artist and title on my factory installed car radio, and provides aux audio from my satellite receiver in CD6. I was able to hide all of the cables and mount the interface in an easy to reach but out of site location as well so it is all very clean. Great product, great instructions, happy customer. My son has an interface that is not nearly as good.

Very Nice iPod Adaptor for 2004 Totoya 4Runner

Written By Steven, Los Angeles, CA on Thursday, August 23, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased the USA Spec iPod Interface (PA12TOY) and installed it myself in my 2004 4Runner. The supplied instructions made it a pretty easy affair. I also downloaded some good dash disassembly instructions from the Internet (do a Google search). The first unit I installed only produced sound from the left channel. Crutchfield was great about shipping me a replacement right away (ends up one of the supplied cords was bad). Now I have great-sounding audio coming out of my in-dash six-CD changer/stereo and can control tracks and volume from the steering wheel or controls on the stereo itself. In the "hybrid" mode, you can control track and other selections directly from the iPod without having to change any settings on the adaptor. Nice. Plus, playlists can be accessed via the in-dash stereo.

One minor issue I have noticed after enjoying this device for a few days: although artist and song info. is usually displayed on the text field of my stereo's display, about every four or five songs, there is a "no text" indication even though there is in fact text for that song. No biggie: Im usually quickly skipping through the tracks anyway to find what I want via audio sampling. Im not relying on the text message. Another minor thing: on a number of occasions, when I press the button on my steering wheel to skip to the next track, it does not respond (or responds rather slowly), meaning I have to press it again. Not by any means the worst thing, but worth mentioning if you like to quickly scan tracks. Definitely install the adaptor in your center console for easy access. Overall, a VERY impressive unit and easily installed by a novice. Two thumbs way up!

Wow! Amazing convenience and sound quality!

Written By Anthony, San Diego, CA on Tuesday, August 21, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

WOW! This ipod interface is amazing. I installed it in my 2005 Toyota Tundra with the the stock JBL system. The instructions supplied by Crutchfield were very simple and I had the entire installation done in under 45 minutes (and that was taking my time)! I tucked the box up under the dash and ran the ipod cord out to my center console. Very clean look. The sound is great from the ipod. The ability to control the ipod with my steering wheel controls was worth all the money right there. The fact that it even shows the song or artist info on the factory radio screen is even better. (Note this feature only works in mode 1.) I hooked by Sirius receiver into the auxiliary input and am now blown away by how much better the Sirius sounds. This is a great adapter and well worth the money.

Why did I wait so long to do this. Installation is simple and quick with Crutchfield's vehicle specific installation guide (took less than an hour to install in my Toyota Tundra DoubleCab. Latest software upgrade allows you to control your iPod via steering wheel controls, radio controls or the iPod itself. It's great having your entire music collection with you at all times.

Easy to install. Works as promised.

Written By CCinMD, Southern MD on Saturday, May 19, 2007

Was easy to install and works like a charm. Best to install where you can get to the unit as you can change the function (i.e. controlling iPod through the controls on the stereo receiver or using the controls on your iPod directly) depending upon how you set the DIP switches.

Great to have my entire CD collection and then some on one 80GB iPod. Don't have to carry the cd cases in the truck anymore!

My 2000 Camry Loves It

Written By Wally, Cedar Rapids, IA on Wednesday, April 25, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product is small, easy to install, comes with all of the needed cables, and the instructions are clear and helpful.

The whole installation process took less than an hour. The most time-consuming aspects were disconnecting the battery (to prevent a short) and carefully removing the radio trim plate from the dash.

Installing the interface itself was literally plug and play. Plug the cable into the back of the Sony CD/Radio, then plug the other end into the interface. Plug the iPod cable into the interface and your iPod and it works!

After a year of listening to the cassette adapter clacking, and dealing with the wire to the headphone jack plus a cigarette lighter charger for the iPod, this USA-Spec interface is pure heaven. Easy access to volume and tracks through my radio interface is worth the cost alone. But not only that, it charges the iPod for you.

I followed the example of another reviewer (he has the PA11TOY version) and drilled a hole through the plastic box in the center console and ran the cable through the hole to my iPod. So now I can conceal the iPod in the center console while it plays. So instead of wires coming out of my dashboard attaching to my iPod sitting in a cup holder, I can listen to my iPod without the tangle and hassle.
