Our take on the USA Spec iPod® Interface for GM

by Zak Billmeier
USA Spec

You can take it with you. Just because you've got a factory radio in your General Motors car, doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod or iPhone® (and the hours and hours of music it contains) at home. Just install USA Spec's iPod interface — it not only allows you to listen to all your favorite tunes through your car's speakers, it even lets you control song and playlist selections right from your radio. And with your iPhone® connected, you can even stream music from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livio Radio, iHeartRadio, and more.

Just mount the compact interface box in a hidden location in your vehicle, and connect the adapter cable to rear of your compatible 2000-up GM factory radio — you won't have to disconnect your CD changer or satellite radio. Plug your iPod into the interface, and you can control volume, source, song selection, and up to five different playlists right from the radio or with your steering wheel audio controls. Or you can switch to "Direct Mode" and use your iPod to access all your songlists. The interface charges your iPod while it's connected.

Features

Overview: This interface adapter (PA15-GM) connects a compatible iPod or iPhone directly to select GM car audio systems for optimal playback sound quality. This interface allows your iPod or iPhone to co-exist with GM navigation, CD-changer, XM radio, or DVD system; and controls your iPod or iPhone via both the in-dash radio and steering wheel controls. The adapter's on-board software translates commands from your GM radio's CD-changer controls or XM Band controls into commands for your connected iPod or iPhone. The USA Spec iPod-to-GM Interface (PA15-GM) offers the following features:

  • Directs the iPod's audio output to your GM's vehicle audio system for optimal sound quality playback
  • Supports your iPhone's audio streaming apps, such as Pandora, Livio, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM & more (in Direct mode only).
  • Controls the iPod via vehicle's radio and steering wheel controls (when applicable)
  • Charges the iPod's internal battery, and charging stops automatically half-hour after the iPod is paused; the iPod goes into sleep mode when charging stops

Vehicle Compatibility: Please consult the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to see if your vehicle is compatible.

iPod Compatibility: The PA15-GM is Made for iPod/iPhone compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features when connected to a compatible GM factory radio (as of 10/3/2013):

Notes:

  • *Requires Apple Lightning to 30-pin Adapter cable (472LTN230P, sold separately).
  • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

iPod Text: Artist name and song title can be displayed on your factory radio using the GM radio's XM band.

None: Some GM radios will only allow disc number and track number to be displayed.

Operation Modes: The iPod interface adapter features the following modes of operation:

  • Direct Mode: In the Direct Mode, the LCD screen and the controls of your iPod or iPhone remain functional. In this mode, you can control your iPod or iPhone's music using the iPod or iPhone's click-wheel or touch-screen. You also have track up/down controls from the GM radio. No text will be displayed on the factory radio in this mode. In addition, Direct Mode allows the playing of streaming music applications, such as Pandora.com, and SIRIUS XM Online radio from your iPhone or iPod touch.
  • Folder Mode: Folder Mode allows you to access 4 folders - Playlist, Artist, Songs, and Album on your iPod or iPhone from the GM radio. Your iPod or iPhone's folders are accessed with the factory radio's preset buttons. You will be able to view artist and song title information on the LCD display of your factory radio. Your iPod and iPhone's screen and controls will be locked.
  • Playlist Mode: This mode allows you to access Playlists and Songs on your iPod or iPhone from the GM radio. When the iPod or iPhone is connected to the GM factory radio via the PA15-GM, the interface scans all available Playlists and folders on your iPod/iPhone and will automatically assign the first 4 Playlists in alphabetical order (they must be Playlists you created in iTunes). Your iPod and iPhone's screen and controls will be locked during connection. The factory headunit will not display artist name or song title information.

Note: To switch between Operation Modes, you will need to configure the dip switches (1-4) on the side of the interface.

App Streaming (in Direct Mode): Direct mode also lets you listen to the sound from your iPhone's downloaded music apps (such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, etc.) through your factory head unit & speakers. You will continue to control your iPhone's apps & view song/artist information from its touchscreen.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need applicable music service accounts.

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod input on the PA15-GM, there is an auxiliary input (stereo RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, or game system. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod connected. To use the auxiliary input on the interface, dip switch #1 must be set to the "On" position.

Good sound, intermittent connection

Written By Casey, Satellite Beach, FL on Saturday, January 25, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice looking, sturdy metal device. Easy hookup, and I appreciated the inclusion of extension cables to make it easier to find a suitable location to tuck the device away.

Sound is crystal clear. I've had other iPod / satellite radio adapters in other cars, and this one's sound is far and away the best. Track info comes across the radio's display whether I'm listening to tracks from an iPod or iPhone or streaming from Spotify.

Huge negative is that the device will intermittently lose it's connection to the audio system. No rhyme or reason - sometimes it will happen multiple times in a short trip, sometimes it works for hours with no hiccups. It's not losing connection with the iPod - you can tell by the way the display behaves. Happens on everything from an old iPod classic to an iPhone 5 (w/ official Apple adapter). Not annoying enough to go through the trouble of yanking it out, returning, and putting something else in, but if I wouldn't buy this again for another car.
Pros:
Nice construction, extension cables are a nice bonus, great audio quality.
Cons:
Intermittently loses connection, cutting off the audio for ~5 seconds and ruining your favorite song.

Ipod interface

Written By Tony, Idaho on Saturday, September 21, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Plays the ipod music just great. Running the playlists through the factory radio is a little slow and cumbersome, but in direct mode it works great. I wish you could switch from direct mode to playlist mode so the names of the songs showed up - but when I do that it switches songs and takes me out of the artist I was listening to in direct mode. Its nice to have the iPod/iphone listening capability!!!!
Pros:
Plays the music well - sounds great. Love it in Direct ipod mode.
Cons:
Kind of slow and hard to find a specific song in playlist mode or any other mode that works via the factory head unit.

Works great with my 2006 H3

Written By Cosmo, Silva Bullet Ranch Rocksprings TX on Friday, August 30, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered the PA15GM for my H3. The OEM{Monsoon} radio in my H3 looked and performed great, and I didn't want to change the look. This product was a perfect fit for me. I choose to hook up to my XM receiver, which was located above the glove box. When I was done, I just pushed it back into place, with a snap. I just removed the glove box lid, and pulled down on the top and the XM receiver was exposed. The connections fit perfectly. I put the module underneath the radio by pulling the center console out by inserting my fingers into the cigarette lighter and pulling, It popped right out. I then ran the "charging" cord along the drivers side door and up to the windshield where I mounted a suction cup cell phone mount attached to the glass. I ordered a marine type aux. input out of Amazon and attached it to the RCA outputs on the PA15GM. I mounted it through the ciggerete lighter {H3 has two} and it looks really professional. No exposed wires for me. This product works great. Does what it says it will. For my particular set up, DIP switches 1 and 4 are the setting I used. The whole setup looks great and this coming for a guy who knows absolutely nothing about car audio. The whole thing took about 1 hour with snaking the wires taking the longest. I've had it installed in my H3 for almost a month with no issues.
Pros:
Installs easily, does what it says it will.
Cons:
None as of this review.

Nice Product

Written By Colorado_Reviewer, Denver, CO on Monday, July 08, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed it on a Chevy Silverado with the Bose XM option. It took less than 20 minutes. Simply pressed the glove box a bit to allow it to swing down lower, disconnected a connector and inserted the harness for this device between the two separated connectors. The only inconvenience is that the IPOD Playlists it can access are restricted. So, it is desirable to set up your IPOD so that the music you wish to listen to are located at the top end of your Playlists. The sound quality is excellent and the device allows you to use existing XM and Chevy radio controls. I recommend the device..
Pros:
Ease of install and sound quality.

Great product. Works as advertised.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Received the item in 1 day (as always!) from Crutchfield. Hardest part of the install was finding the XM receiver in my vehicle (2006 Chevy Colorado). It was not located where the instructions that came from USA Spec indicated. Turns out it was behind a drop-down plastic panel on the passenger side of the truck near the center of the dash. The panel is attached with two clips towards the firewall side of the panel, and just swings down out of the way. Once I found this, it was a 10 minute job. Sound quality is awesome, and all the controls are via the OEM head unit. Definitely worth it if you want to retain your factory stereo and have iPhone/Pod capability.
Pros:
High quality cables that plug straight in to the head unit. Very simple installation. Awesome sound quality and good integration with the factory controls. It comes from Crutchfield - what else would you expect!
Cons:
Instructions could have been a little clearer on the specific connection location for my vehicle.

I love this interface! It maintains all stock functions, and gives you so much! I love the user friendly settings/functionality of this unit! Installed in my 05 Sierra in 20 min! All iPod info of displayed on stock radio and steering wheel buttons operate it too! (big bonus for me). But best of all is the iPod direct feature, where you use the iPod as if it were mobile, allowing you to play games, browse internet while still listening to music through my truck! This product is the best!
Pros:
IPod direct mode, maintains ALL stock features, super easy install.
Cons:
A bit spendy but well worth it!

This was a super easy add on to 2005 Avalanche with the Bose system with XM. I didn't want to swap my stereo so this was a perfect way to get my mp3 music available and was super easy to install, especially if you have the XM receiver built in.
Pros:
Easy installation, high quality components
Cons:
A little pricey, some of the navigation through your iPod folders is confusing but that seems to be typical

Worked as good as Addvertised in my 07 Chevy Classic with factory XM! Read over the instructions and after setting the DIP switches it took a whole 5 minutes to install! I just left the unit and wiring in the glove box, set it to direct mode and the ipod to shuffle. I never see my ipod or any wiring. Sterring wheel controls work great!
Pros:
SUPER EASY INSTALL! The hardest part was unplugging the factory XM unit.
Cons:
None that I encountered.

The adapter works just like it should. I was able to install it and have my dash back together within 45 minutes. The sound is amazing through my bose speakers. Even better than my cd player. I like the fact that I can still use my steering wheel controls and be able to display the songs on my existing stereo.
Pros:
installation is easy using the existing connections without having to cut any additional wires. instructions are clear and easy to follow.
Cons:
none.

Slick device (2003 Avalanche, Bose, XM)

Written By Jason, Minneapolis, MN on Tuesday, May 15, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Since I had a factory-installed XM receiver, installation was really easy. Once I understood exactly what I had to do, it took less than five minutes to plug everything in for testing with my iPhone. It took me longer to run the cables back through the dash and figure out where to store everything than to actually get it working. Sound quality is very good and everything (including the controls on the steering wheel) seems to work. Plus it charges the phone at the same time, which I wasn't expecting for some reason.

The one nit I have is that it doesn't seem to reliably pick up whatever the most recent thing played on the iPhone. This might just be something I need to work through the details of; I tend to play a lot of sound through things other than the iTunes app (e.g. Audacity, iHeartRadio) and that might be part of the issue). Even if I can't figure out a way around it, it's not a big deal; once I switch to preset 5 to get control back to the iPhone it's just a couple of button clicks.
Pros:
Easy installation, good sound quality, preserves all existing stereo controls.
Cons:
Doesn't always remember what was just playing upon a disconnect and reconnect.

Nice to have iPhone working on my 2004 Tahoe, music sounds fantastic!!
Pros:
Music and Navigation work great thru factory radio. Music turns down when giving turn by turn directions and returns to original volume.
Cons:
iPhone calls do not work thru Tahoe speakers must pick up the phone, illegal here in MD if driving. It does turn down the music for you.

Sounds great

Written By Scott B, Lompoc, CA on Wednesday, March 21, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Received my order this afternoon and had it installed in under an hour. The sound is great and it works as advertised. My Tahoe has the XM receiver behind the glove box so installation was easy. It took longer to decide where to run the iPod cord. The plug on the cord was a little large and I wound up trimming the covers on the phones to make it easier to connect.
Pros:
great sound, like the control options
Cons:
would like a plug that works well with phone cover

Well worth it

Written By FredM, Charleston, SC on Wednesday, February 22, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Does exactly what it claims to do. I decided a while back to replace the head unit on my 2004 Avalanche, thinking a "modern" system would be superior. I realized that what I really wanted most was to have access to my music collection, contained entirely on my iPhone. The factory system sounds great. Replacing the head unit requires an adapter to ensure that the vehicle's safety chimes function. This iPod interface was the right product for my needs.

I'm glad I read the reviews before attempting to install the unit. A most helpful tip was to READ THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY before starting the work. In my case (Avalanche), there is no need to remove the radio or even dash. The instructions tell how to set the small switches on the unit before installing. The settings will differ depending on your display and operation preference.

In my case, the unit is connected into the XM receiver. Again, thanks to the instructions provided, I knew that the XM receiver is in plain view behind the glove box. Merely pressing in the rubber catch inside the glove box gives complete access. The supplied connector is identical to the factory connector, so there is no way to mess up the connection. I spent about 15 minutes at the kitchen table studying the install instructions and setting the switches on the unit. Once in the truck, it took literally five minutes to hook up the unit and run the iPod connector cable to an inconspicuous area of exit under the dash. Cool!
Pros:
Easy installation. Uses existing stereo, gives full access to iPod/iPhone music collection. As good or better-than-CD sound quality. Can use factory steering-wheel radio controls to advance. Song info shown on radio screen. Still able to use factory XM radio.
Cons:
If you choose to use the setting which gives full control to vehicle radio buttons, the iPhone/iPod does not display music info. Likewise, choosing complete control from iPhone/iPod disables some control via the radio buttons.

Okay, but....

Written By JK, Burtonsville on Sunday, February 05, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a number of problems with the unit. First, a number of people commmented on the difficulty of mounting this unit; they are correct. The adapter harness is only about 6 inches long and it was very difficult to find a suitable mounting location(I never really did)in my 2006 Colorado that didn't interfere with the factory radio. I also had an intermittency in my unit that caused the entire audio system to shut down after about 30 minutes of the playing time. Note that it shut down the whole system and not just the iPod. I checked the connections several times before removing and restoring the factory connections. I also found the iPod controls to be be confusing. (Note, Crutchfield offered to immediately replace the defective unit, but given I had already had the dash apart several times mounting and debugging this unit and didn't really like the controls, I declined.)
Pros:
You can play your iPod through the factory stereo
Cons:
Unit was difficult to mount Unit was intermittent iPod control was confusing

Awesome

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very easy to install. There is NO wire cutting or splicing involved! Plug in and go!! I have an 06 GMC Sierra, w/o cd changer or xm, my factory radio recognizes my iPhone 4 as either XM radio or a cd changer (optional during installation), charges my phone at anytime as long as it is plugged in, I can control my iPod using my steering wheel controls, on the factory radio, or directly on my phone. The sound quality of my music from my phone playing over the radio is crystal clear and it gets as loud as i want it (unlike with the tape player with a cord plugging into my phone which made Lady Gaga sound like she were on a cassette tape). I feel like they thought of everything with this product!! Now I feel like my factory radio is somewhat up to date for 2012 and my truck is actually worth something.
Pros:
SUPER easy to install, even easier to use, very very great to have with my iPhone
Cons:
I honestly can not think of any cons

Good and Bad, 2008 Envoy-Denali

Written By Dan K., Milwaukee, WI on Tuesday, January 31, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The install went okay once you know how to do it. My SUV has the XM hookup so you need to get at it from behind the glove compartment and remove the 2 screws to get at it. Attaching the adapter and running the cable went easier. It uses one of the 2 XM bands and the one it uses displays AUX. I do not know if this is common but my both my XM radio bands (XM1 and XM2) go into AUX mode after different periods of time and the XM receiver no longer plays. Sometimes it is months others a few days before it does that. I found by pulling the fuse that handles the radio I am able to reset the radio and the XM radio works for a while after that.
Pros:
Easy install if you have XM radio. Pandora can stream thru it and display song info as well as music on the iPhone 4.
Cons:
It streams iHeart radio but when switching stations it defaults back to the music on the iPhone until the next station loads. It would be better if it would just stick to the app when loading.

I-Pod Interface 2006 Silverado

Written By Felix, New Lenox, IL on Sunday, January 29, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The I-Pod interface works great on my 2006 Silverado. Installation instructions were excellent. I did not have the XM module behind the glove compartment, so you need to remove the radio to install the wire harnesses provided with in the package. Still the installation was relatively easy. I suggest leaving the interface module accessable until you have used the unit for a while and figure out your prefernce for I-pod/I-phone connection cables.

The sound quality is awsome, and the interface allows I-pod control from your radio buttons. Much more convenient/safer than operating your I-Pod while driving.Much better quality than the wireless interface I was using before. I also purchased a blue tooth that plugs into the cigarette lighter which gives me hands free phone operation that plays through the radio.
Pros:
Easily installed, clear and detailed installation and set up instructions, excellent sound quality.
Cons:
The unit quit working entirely after two weeks. Crutchfield tech support had me unplug the unit and recycle all the dip switches. Crutchfield support is excellent. Anyway, the unit started working again and I have not had any other problems since. Working OK for about 4 months now.

Awesome Product

Written By Matt, Uxbridge, MA on Sunday, January 29, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in a 2006 GMC Yukon Denali in about 20 minutes. Make sure you read the directions since it should be connected at the satellite receiver side of the XM cable and not the stereo side of the cable. I brought this to a dealer to have it installed and they didn't install in correctly (they used the CD hookup instead). While the interface was okay in that configuration, it is far superior to hook it up via the XM interface. With the XM interface the song, artist, and track all display. You can control the iPod from the touch screen, selecting playlists, artists, albums, etc...
Pros:
Nice touch screen interface utilizing the existing XM interface on the navigation system. Sound quality is great. iPod can be hidden in glove box. Sound quality is great. One of the modes is "Direct" mode which enables you to still use the iPods controls. This lets you use other applications like Pandora. Also, when in that mode, if you are still using the iPod music app then it is controllable by both the iPod and nav touch screen at the same time.
Cons:
The touch interface is a little sluggish when moving between playlists, artists, albums. It seems the first song has to start playing before you can proceed to the next list. No graphics are display - this isn't a deal breaker but it would have been nice.

Just not woth it

Written By Bob, Knoxville TN on Thursday, January 12, 2012

I was so anxious that this product was going to work on my 2003 GMC Sierra 2500HD. The install was as easy as it could be, little confusing in terms of how to set dip switches but got that figured out. Got everything wired up and back in place (made sure I could get to control box easy). After the hard install my hopes for a great product quickly dissappeared. Day four after the install I came out to a dead battery, I did not drive it day prior (lights were not left on, recharged battery and all well again). Crutchfield issued a RMA and sent a replacement due to a possible defective interface. I just swapped the electronic box and gave it another shot. The music plays great and you can control everything by the radio or steering wheel. The issue is I want the iPod to play random all the time. I have a iPod classic with over 16k songs and I do not want to select certain music. This unit will not do this, you have to select functions every cycle if truck sat for over an hour, it does not retain functions in memory such as random or direct mode. Everytime you start the truck the function resets and sometimes resets the whole iPod thus your greeted with the same song again. I called USA Spec and they confirmed that is how it is to function. Had I known that I would not have wasted my time. Thank you Crutchfield for alllowing me to return this for a refund. Just wish a little more R&D and voice of customer went into the design.

This product went together just as written in the book. The manufacturer gave me all the information I needed to find my XM module to hook up to. A little time planning this installation, and it all came together without a hitch. I like how you can press "5" on your radio and maintain control of your iPod,for instance when listening to podcasts, or let this unit control it. I've recommended this unit to other folks and wouldn't hesitate to purchase another unit.

Easy Install in a Tahoe. Works Great.

Written By PowerSurferNJ, NJ on Sunday, October 09, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Would recommend this to anyone with a GM car that this fits.

Easiest install I've done, of about a dozen installs over 35 years. The Tahoe dash came apart easily, the connectors all fit perfectly. I was able to snake the wires exactly where I wanted everything.

Since the adapter works with a lot of factory radio variations like XM and Nav, you have to read the manual very carefully to figure out which section applies to your setup. I found final configuration a little confusing so I called Crutchfield Tech support. The technician quickly understood the problem and walked me through the final setup. With a flick of a dipswitch and resetting the system everything worked. Factory radio and steering wheel controls all work as designed and described in the manual.

The sound from my Ipod is brighter than playing a CD. Depending on your taste, minor tweaks of the treble/bass (or ipod EQ) may be required, depending upon the music.

The only other comment is that the adaptor box has no flanges, brackets or holes to secure it. I hid it under the cupholders, which lift right out of the Tahoe's console, making it readily accessible. I'll probably use velcro to secure the adaptor box since it's light.

Don't Buy

Written By ChadP, Athens, GA on Monday, September 26, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The install was pretty easy, hooking it up to my factory satellite module behind my glove box. So you know, the iPod function replaces all your XM1 and you only have your 6 XM2 presets to use. After I installed it when I listened to XM it has a very annoying static in the background. Forget listening to talk radio it sounds terrible.. The iPod function worked great. That right WORKED great. After about a week it has completely stopped working. Oh yeah one more thing on a regular basis I would have to power off and on the radio to get it to pick up onany signal. Good idea but the product is junk.

All I have to say is WOW! Installation was ten minutes, out of box and into vehicle (2004 Yukon Denali). Great sound, no static. Took a little more time, maybe 15 minutes to comprehend the display functions on my screen but all in all great product. I have a Lexus GS400 also, I wish they made an interface for it as well. Thumbs Up

Took me longer to read included instructions than to install. If you read and pay attention you won't remove the radio if you don't have to, NO power or grounds to chase, just plugged it into sat. box behind glove box ran wire where I wanted ipod to go and Ipod rockin!! 10 minutes tops. Most incredible car audio product I've ever installed. Steering wheel controls and sound quality tops! Used double sided foam to mount. Only thing I would add is, removable mounting tabs but ty straps work too. THANX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Received this afternoon and had it installed in my '05 Suburban (factory stereo +DVD +Nav) in about 1 hour. Cable connection to XM stereo took ~5 minutes, remainder of time was spent routing the iPod/iPhone cable through dash. I drilled holes (1/2 inch), 1 in dash and 1 in bottom rear of glove box, to hide the cable. Works great!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

An easy way to get an iPhone working in my 2004 Tahoe (with factory XM). Install literally took about 10 minutes, took much longer to route the iPhone cable somewhere hidden.

One disappointment, if you use 'direct control' (where you control playback with the iPhone, rather than using the factory radio controls), you don't get anything on the display of the radio, only on your iPhone. No HUGE issue, but too bad.

The price is pretty steep, but not many alternatives right now.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the perfect addition to my 04 Silverado. I already have the Bose sound system from the factory and I didn't want to install an aftermarket head unit because I like how my factory unit matches the interior perfectly. This was the perfect option for hooking up my iphone and since it uses the ipod dock connector, it sounds much better than my wife's bluetooth sync system in her Ford. The music sounds perfect through the bose speakers and it only took a few minutes to install. I drilled a single hole (optional) through the tray by the cup holder for the cord. And I removed the rubber tray insert prior, so that if I ever remove the ipod cord the insert goes back and covers the 1/2" hole completely. Great purchase, works exactly as advertised, simple installation.

Purchased and installed without a hitch.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased and installed without a hitch.

Produuct arrived the following day (24hrs) on my door step.

I initially found this product to be overpriced for some cabling and plugs, however, I have
purchased and installed items from Crutchfield previously and found the product and
instruction packet to be dead on as described. So I went for the reliability of Crutchfield
and willingly paid for their experience.

The instructions lead me to believe I would have to disasemble the dash and remove
the radio and also make access to the XM box. I did so without any problems, simply
followed the instructions provided. I did find that it was not nessasay to remove the
radio though, the connections were performed at the XM Box.

One dissapointment is that once I plug the IPod into the cabling ,I lose the use of the
IPod screen and using the radio controls are not as easy as the touch screen on the
IPod.

Works great 2004 chevy suburban (bose, indash cd, xm, onstar)

Written By DM, CA on Sunday, January 09, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works great! 25 min to get plugged in and functioning.

The hands on research on the main PA15-GM page indicates this unit does not work
with the 6-cd in-dash changer of my 2004 Chevy Suburban (bose + xm + onstar +
indash 6 cd). But there is another place on Crutchfield's site saying it does.
I checked the manufacturer site which says it works fine, and I even called
Crutchfield to see if they could reconcile the difference, which they couldn't.
I ordered anyway, confident I could return it if Crutchfield's warning about the
cd changer was wrong.

I'm happy to report this unit works perfectly for me and all functions of my
factory radio are retained. The only thing you trade in this scenario is the
XM1 band is now used to select the ipod rather than used for XM presets. Since I
don't subscribe to XM radio, this is no loss. Then
within the XM1 band, I can move through the songs by song, playlist, artist or
album. This really is a plug-n-play unit and I'm very happy. It is as if it
came with the car from the factory.

The only thing I'm still trying to figure out is the best place to put the
little box. I've seen recommendations to put it above the xm receiver behind
the glovebox with the ipod in the glovebox. But I like keeping papers there and
it is a small glovebox. It will fit, but I think I can actually put it below
the cupholder in the lower console with velcro and then add an aux jack as well
to plug in something else.

All in all a very good purchase.

I've had this wired in to my 2003 Chevy Tahoe and it's been working great. The
staff at Crutchfield was awesome, and the order came with pictures on how to
install the cable. I had an installation question, called Crutchfield, and was
back at it about 5 minutes later. The tech rep was very helpful and knew what I
was asking.
The interface itself is easy to install, just 3 easy steps. Remove the factory
stereo, plug the interface into the existing radio plug, and replace the stereo.
The interface charges my Ipod as I use it, and saved me some money instead of
having to buy a new stereo with an auxiliary plug. Highly recommend!

Great Unit, Great Sound Quality

Written By Scott, Sacramento, CA on Saturday, October 30, 2010

To start, my application was different than in the other reviews. I have an '04 Tahoe
without XM (but I do have the factory Bose 6 disc in dash changer with the band button)
so it took about an hour to install. Installation was simple, i.e. you just plug in cables to
the factory harnesses. But I did have to take the main bezel off the dash and remove a
few other panels to route the cables so a warning to others: If you aren't
familiar/comfortable pulling the dash apart -Get a shop to install it.

Otherwise it works as advertised: The sound quality is great (good dynamic rage) and
my factory steering wheel controls work (program = playlist, seek = track). NOTE: On my
model car/stereo the radio does NOT display the song. I expected this (you have to have
the XM option for this), but I offer it as a heads up to others.

USA Spec iPod® Interface for GM

Written By John, Jackson, MS on Wednesday, October 13, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fairly easy to install. I have a 2005 Tahoe and it took some fancy work to get the radio out enough to disconnect all the connections from the factory radio. After a few scratches and standing on my head i finally got it out and 5 minutes later I was done. Adapter works great. Doesn't work on iPads though. So don't get your hopes up like I did. Works perfect on iPod though.

Very happy with my purchase.
When ordering I thought I would have to take it to an audio store for installation, until it arrived with the step by step picture diagrams for installation. It was a breeze. Your company's "what fits" section makes the ordering process easy and made me feel confident that what I ordered was going to work.
A great piece of equipment!!
Delivers great sound and a much broader dynamic range!!
YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!!

USA Spec iPod® Interface for GM

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1/2 ton. Bought this product to avoid buying a new stereo for
my truck, wanted to keep the factory unit with satellite and onstar. Very easy to install as
hookup is behind glove box. I only have one complaint so far: this unit pauses the ipod
each time the vehicle is turned off, but when in shuffle mode it does not return to shuffle
mode when the vehicle is started again. I have to manually select shuffle again which
sometimes causes the same songs to be played again. I find myself using the "direct"
setting more often than I thought I would. Having said all that, I would buy this product
again to avoid replacing my factory radio.

I just received this yesterday and installed it right away. Finding a place for this took
longer than the actual install. Very easy and straight forward. Works with the new Ipod
Touch 4th generation. I like that it has an auxiliary input as well, this way my wife can
hook up her Creative Zen. Well worth the money.

Great product!

Written By CM, Philadelphia, PA on Friday, September 10, 2010

I had purchased an adapter for my wife's Chrysler, and it was so good I got one for myself.
This product is great. I like that it was plug and play, a 20 minute install in my Trailblazer
through the XM receiver, and if I need to remove it it's just as easy. No wire splicing, no
complicated install.

The sound is amazing. Even better than CD's. I have the Bose system whoich admittedly is not
all that great, but it seems alot better with the IPod running through it. The cables are high
quality and instructions (on use) are thorough. You need to know where the XM receiver is,
and that was the hardest part of the install.

Would buy a USASpec product for any car I get in the future.

Works in my Hummer H3

Written By Demetrios, Philadelphia on Thursday, September 02, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered the USA SPEC PA15-GM yesterday and today I was listening to crystal clear music from my ipod. I installed this in my 2007 Hummer H3 in 10 minutes!!! Real simple and works great!!! I opened my glove box past the stop tabs, there is a plastic panel above this space under the air bag. At first this panel appears to be part of the entire dash molding (and it is) BUT if you pull on the back edge (the one closest to the firewall) it will unsnap and swing down and out enough to be able to connect cable CAS-GM2x right to the XM tuner. Connect cable CB-PA105 where it says ipod. Thats it, your done! THANK YOU Crutchfield and USA SPEC for this fine product.

Excellent Product

Written By Anonymous, Charleston, SC on Tuesday, August 17, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product is awesome. I purchase a lot of electronics online and very rarely am I inclined to add anything to the ratings of the products. However, after reading the reviews here, I decided to purchase the USA iPod interface and I am glad I did. It works so well, I felt I needed to add my two cents worth.

I installed the unit in about 10 minutes in a 2006 Avalanche with XM radio. It could not have been simpler. (Although, I do have to admit that their setup manual could have been a little clearer). Immediately, I realized there was a problem. The factory radio would not recognize any of my playlists/artists/albums. I called the tech support number in the manual, got right through with no waiting, got transferred to a tech agent again with no waiting. I explained my problem and he knew what to do right away (it was a problem with my iPod touch and not the interface). After a reset of the iPod, everything was great. The sound is SOOO much better than my old FM transmitter. The ability to control the iPod with the controls on my steering wheel is fantastic.

If you are sitting on the fence wondering about purchasing this product, do it. It's simple to install, sounds great, and oh so convenient.

Awesome!! A+

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

GREAT device-does what it says . Install was a breeze - ZERO tools. Radio didnt have to come out, dash didnt have to come apart - nothing. 05 Escalade w/ XM/Nav/Bose. XM box was behind glove box w/ wiring right there. Open glove box ALL the way - past the stop (push with your finger), unplug ONE harness, plug in PA-15 harness, then plug XM harness back into connector on PA 15. No screws or tools, nothing. Installation would have taken 30 seconds if I read my own review ahead of time.

Turned the car on, plugged in my iphone and the magic unfolded. ONLY bummer is I lost my XM1 presets. XM1 now gets dedicated to the iphone/ipod, but there are alot of cool features it has. Onscreen works just like it says, I can SHUFFLE, select by artist, track, etc. Stream PANDORA! Steering wheel controls all work. All through my Bose system - sounds amazing.

Buy from an AUTHORIZED retailer. Don't bargain shop and get a knock off or from a seller NOT authorized. I called USA-SPEC ahead of time to ask ?'s and they WON'T provide assistance if you didnt buy from auth dealer. I received detailed instructions in my package with a direct number to USA spec and free tech support. I ordered from Crutchfield, and in addition to the USA spec instruction manual, Crutchfield sent a detailed, photographed step by step disassembly of my car's stereo (not everyone has XM), which I would think would be VERY helpful if I had to plug into the back of the stereo instead of the XM box.

So far so good

Written By Anonymous, Denver, CO on Tuesday, June 29, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good product so far. The interface was easy to install with my XM radio, almost too easy.
However, Crutchfield included instructions which told me to remove my factory radio unit.
This was not necessary and a complete waste of time. On my Yukon the XM reciever is
behind my glove box and all I needed to do was unplug one wire, plug in the USA Spec
interface and I was set to go. No drilling, cutting, splicing. Nothing. So easy. Just wish
Crutchfield hadn't told me to take apart my whole dash first.

The playlist mode it great because it shows all your songs on the screen and you can still
use the steering wheel controls. The only downside is that when in direct mode, the radio
does not display any track/artist/album information. Not the end of the world, but it would be
nice to see what is being played.

If you're stuck using a tape to play your iPod, or using a FM transmitter cable, this is a
great upgrade. A little pricy, but well worth it. It allows all the stock chimes to continue
functioning and use of the steering wheel controls too.

Overall: A-

This "gizmo" really did the trick!

Written By Sylverwolfe, Houston, Texas on Tuesday, June 29, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The plug & play connections along with the very clear, easy to understand and well written directions made converting my factory radio in my '06 Silverado a complete snap!

Though I did have my doubts about the performance, those doubts were erased completely when I heard how clear the sound came through. The volume is the same as the radio or CD player which makes this device far superior to the widely available the FM transmitter. Also, because it interfaces with the factory radio, you can select tracks, tap the "info/tune" knob in order to find Artist/band names and track names. The sound is also clear as a bell, it seemed clearer than CD's I have ripped at home and played through the CD player.

It is difficult to say which is the best quality, the sound, interactive nature, or the clean look after it is placed inside the dash, but the unit is definitely worth the money!

Finally! A quality car adaptor

Written By Robert, Napa, CA on Monday, June 21, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After suffering through FM transmitter adaptors with my Zune, the Zune finally quit and I got
an Ipod Touch. This USA adaptor installed in my 2006 Avalanche in 10 minutes, routs the
text info through the #1 XM Band complete with Playlist/Album/Artist/Song info on the nav
screen. XM still operates through the #2 band. Options for touch-screen access to P/A/A/S
choices are also there. The steering wheel controls also work great for volume, next
song/album, next category (artist, playlists, etc.). Although the Ipod screen says, "Accessory
Connected. No Charging Function With This Accessory", I have yet to find the Ipod
discharging in the truck. Maybe I haven't played it long enough yet. The instruction sheet is
okay for installation,
but not clear for usage. A little playing around got me through that, however. Highly
recommended. Great sound through my factory Bose system. No more hunting for open FM
slots or static in tunnels, etc.

3 questions already asked

Do you need to have the satellite radio option for this to work. I have the standard radio no xm in my 2006 silverado? [ Ethan  Apr 29, 2014 ]
1 answer
  • For details on fit or installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on if this will fit and what you will need for an installation in your vehicle. [ Krissy Staff  Apr 29, 2014 ]
Does this allow you to answer phone calls through the stock head unit and speak through the factory microphone? [ Thomas  Mar 30, 2014 ]
7 answers
  • No, it does not. This just allows you to listen to music or movies through your stereo and speakers. [ SCOTT   Mar 31, 2014 ]
  • No, but I think there was a Bluetooth option that might work for that. You can leave it connected to the vehicle and use the phone with ear buds though. [ AARON K   Mar 31, 2014 ]
  • No, just music only from your music files, pandora, itunes radio etc. No phone calls. GPS will come thru speakers. Bought this for both my Nissan Pathfinder and my Chevy Avalanche, and love it alot. [ JOHN   Mar 31, 2014 ]
  • No it won't. [ STEPHEN   Mar 31, 2014 ]
  • Not that I could figure out. It doesn't seem to use the car's internal phone system at all. I usually talk through the iphone with the iphone's external speaker on so it can be hands free. This interface is pretty nice overall. It's a less expensive option compared to completely replacing the head unit with a bluetooth capable system. [ DAVID   Mar 31, 2014 ]
  • This interface does not let you answer the calls and speak with the factory mic. [ DAVID L   Mar 31, 2014 ]
  • No. This just allows you to play music from your iPod. If you are using an iPhone and a call comes in, it will stop playing the music, but you will have to use the phone to receive the call. [ JAMES   Mar 31, 2014 ]
I was just curious if it works with the iPhone 5? [ Thomas  Dec 10, 2013 ]
9 answers
  • Yes it will work with iPhone 5/5S. Buy the 30 pin to Lightning adapter from APPLE, not a aftermarket one, and you will have no problems. [ JOHN   Mar 31, 2014 ]
  • yes it will work for the iPhone 5 but you must buy the apple adapter they have available to switch it over to the newer charge port. [ CODY   Dec 24, 2013 ]
  • Thomas, The one I bought was for my daughter's 2006 Chevy Colorado. She has an iPhone 4S, so I can't say from experience that it will work with an iPhone 5, but their compatibility table says it will, as long as you have the adapter from the old style iPhone connector to the new Lightening connector. One word of caution - make sure you check compatibility on the Crutchfield site with your specific head unit (OEM or aftermarket, whatever you have). Some of the controls for the iPhone from the head unit will only work with certain stock radio models. Good luck - I love this adapter, and will be buying one for my son for Christmas (2003 Jeep). I also have one in my 2003 GMC Sierra with a JVC head unit. These things are the best! [ TIMOTHY C   Dec 11, 2013 ]
  • Works with my iPhone 5 [ KRIS   Dec 11, 2013 ]
  • It will if you buy a lightning connector [ DAVID L   Dec 11, 2013 ]
  • I wish I had a answer but I only use my iPod with it...but I feel certain that a iPhone will work with it [ SCOTT L   Dec 11, 2013 ]
  • Mine worked with an I 5 phone. [ ED   Dec 11, 2013 ]
  • I can not say that it works with iphone5 but I will say that it is finicky piece of equipment. I wanted to keep the factory look in my wife's Tahoe and went with this over a aftermarket radio...best bet is to go with a LCD screen with ipod/iphone controls enabled on the head unit....I and my wife are very disappointed in the USA Spec Ipod Interface for the GM and felt like we wasted out money. [ STEPHEN   Dec 11, 2013 ]
  • Yes it does. [ STEPHEN   Dec 11, 2013 ]
