USA Spec

Our take on the USA Spec iPod® Interface for Toyota, Honda, and Isuzu

You have a factory radio in your Japanese-built car, but that doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod at home. Install USA Spec's iPod interface and listen to your favorite tunes through your car's speakers. You can control song selection, and up to five different playlists right from the radio, including shuffle mode. The interface also charges your iPod while it's connected. And with your iPhone® connected, you can even stream music from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livio Radio, iHeartRadio, and more.

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle. The iPod interface uses the CD changer port, so any existing changer that you have must be disconnected.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

Highlights:

  • iPod control adapter for select 1998-up Toyota-built factory stereos

Features

Overview: This interface connects a compatible iPod/iPhone to select Toyota and Lexus audio systems. Its on-board software translates commands from your Toyota radio's CD-changer controls into commands the iPod/iPhone understands. This interface allows you to retain CD changer, Rear Seat Entertainment/DVD, and Satellite Radio - while providing the following iPod/iPhone functions through your vehicle's factory radio:

  • Directs the iPod/iPhones's audio output to your Toyota's vehicle audio system for optimal sound quality playback.
  • Supports your iPhone's audio streaming apps, such as Pandora, Livio, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM & more (in Direct mode only).
  • Controls the iPod/iPhone via vehicle's radio and steering wheel controls (when applicable).
  • Charges the iPod/iPhone's internal battery, and charging stops automatically at one hour after the iPod is paused. The iPod/iPhone goes into sleep mode when charging stops.

Specific Features: The PA15-TOY displays song title and artist information on all radios with a "Text" button. It works with all 1998 to 2008 radios, including the in-dash 6-disc CD changer, and the 2007-08 Tundra and Avalon. The PA15-TOY allows connection through the XM/CDC port.

Vehicle Compatibility: Please consult the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to see if your vehicle is compatible.

iPod Compatibility: The PA15-TOY is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features when connected to a compatible Toyota, Lexus, Scion, Honda, Acura, or Isuzu factory radio (as of 2/24/2012):

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to revert to the older software version or wait until a newer software update is available.

Operation Modes: The iPod/iPhone interface adapter features the following modes of operation:

  • Playlist Mode: You can create up to 6 favorite mobile playlist then use your radio's CD changer controls to access and control your playlist.
  • Direct Mode: Gives you complete control of your iPod/iPhone while it is connected to the factory radio. Your iPod is not locked out while connected to the radio and you are able to manually access your complete iPod/iPhone content. The Radio still can adjust song up/down random or shuffle play, but you can manually control your iPod/iPhone & select any playlist, genre or Artist of your choice. (Disk 8 is dedicated to Direct Mode use)

App Streaming (in Direct Mode): Direct mode also lets you listen to the sound from your iPhone's downloaded music apps (such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, etc.) through your factory head unit & speakers. You will continue to control your iPhone's apps & view song/artist information from its touchscreen.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need applicable music service accounts.

Manual Correction: Although the current manual details a third operation mode, Hybrid Mode, the PA15-TOY does not offer this feature. Hybrid Mode was removed to improve operational consistency.

iPod Text: Pressing the TEXT button on your factory Toyota radio while your iPod/iPhone plays in the Playlist mode, allows the artist name and song title to be displayed on your factory radio. The Artist name is displayed at the first time press of the TEXT button and song title is displayed at the second time press of the TEXT button. The Playlist disc number and track number will be displayed at the third time press of the TEXT button.

Note: Track search by artist, song title or album are not supported. Some of the older design Toyota radios do not have the TEXT button feature.

iPod Playback: All audio tracks on the iPod/iPhone will be played with text display at Disc 7 in Direct Mode, or Disc 8 without text display. The track order is determined by the default order on the iPod. Selecting discs 1 through 6 on the factory radio will allow playback of 6 playlists on the iPod/iPhone. You can select a playlist by pressing the Disc Up or Disc Down buttons. Playlists which are created for direct access must be designated with the word "TOYOTA" and the disc number. If no "TOYOTA" playlists are designated, the first six playlists on the iPod/iPhone are accessible from the Disc 1 through Disc 6 buttons.

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod/iPhone input on the PA15-TOY there is an auxiliary input (stereo RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, or game system. The aux input is selected at CD 9 Track 1 using the factory radio controls. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod/iPhone connected. To use the auxiliary input on the interface, dip switch #1 must be set to the "On" position.

Controls: The factory radio's controls give you access to the following iPod/iPhone functions:

  • Scan: plays first 10 seconds of each track in the current playlist (if scan is pressed at Disc 7, it will play all songs in the iPod/iPhone for 10 seconds each)
  • Random (Shuffle): songs in the current playlist are played back in random order (some radios have a "P scan" button for this function)
  • Track Up/Down: the "Next" button advances to the next track in the playlist; the "Prev" button allows you to jump to the beginning of the currently playing song
  • Fast Track Search: the "Fwd" or "Rev" button will advance or retreat through the tracks in increments of 10 (i.e. 04, 14, 24...)

Note: Repeat play is not supported by this interface. Switching to another source, such as AM/FM, CD, or Cassette, puts the iPod/iPhone into pause mode.

This product comes with all the cables needed and was super easy to install in my Tacoma. It sounds better than I expected. The only problem was that Crutchfield instructions did not show how to get the dash panel off, so I had to look this up using google on my own. No big deal.

I added this to my 99 Toyota 4Runner. It works just like it says and was an easy install. 6 play lists can be controlled with your stereo or you can use the IPod manually. I used the auxillary inputs for a portable satellite radio (much better then the antenna adapter i was previously using). This is a great way to use your Ipod with a factory stereo.

Despite the Crutchfield car configurator saying this doesn't work in my 2010 Toyota RAV4 V6 Limited (JBL, XM, non-Nav) or 2004 Prius (non-MP3, non-Nav), it does. I installed the PA15 in both of them and have them working with my iPhone 3G & 2nd & 4th gen Nanos without any issues. Note that the Y-harness has 2 connectors coming out of the ipod adapter, but you only connect one into the back of the radio, into the external CD changer slot.

The install on the RAV4 was pretty straightforward, the Prius a little more involved (only b/c I had to remove much more of the dash to get to the radio). I have been happy with it so far!

Highly recommended great buy.

Just bought a new van and was looking for a better quality way to enjoy my iPod than a FM transmitter. After looking a numerous stereos, I was looking at almost $600 for something double wide. Went to the iCarStereo section and found this adapter. The install was very straight forward and only took more than an hour because I wanted to find the best spot to hide the adapter and the cable...

TIP: Turns out there is an ideal spot under the steering wheel on the right side above the panelling, there are some plastic mounts that are the right width!!!

Only CON, is that when I plug the iPod in, it goes to random and repeat all songs. I mainly listen to podcasts or playlists, so I have to switch to the next disk (direct mode) and change the repeat setting to off on the iPod. Plan to call manufacturer for options.

Installed in a 2000 Toyota Sienna. Stock stereo with AM/FM, cassette, and single slot CD, no RDS text functionality, CD button on front, and steering wheel controls. iPod is 16 GB 2nd generation Touch, and charges while connected.

Works exactly as advertised and delivers great direct-connect sound. Was very easy to install and retains all original system functionality, while adding an additional aux input. Thanks Bryce!

I mounted the USA Spec device in the bottom console CD drawer. Drawer can be closed with cable running out, and iPod and cables can be stored out of sight in closed drawer.

Additional CAS-TCL Y-cable is required to retain the steering wheel control and is used instead of adaptor supplied. The Y-cable plugs into an extra port on the back, with the original cable in one leg and the USA Spec in the other. Main connectors on stereo remain untouched.

With iPod not connected, the CD button toggles between the original CD slot and the Disc 9 aux port. When the iPod is connected, the CD button also toggles to the iPod, which functions like a multi disc CD player using Disc 1 thru 8.

Pressing Disc up and down toggles through playlists 1 thru 6 if they exist. If not, disc up and down toggles between Disc 7 and 8. Disc 7 is all songs with no iPod control. Disc 8 allows iPod control of artist/album.

Volume is changed only by stereo/steering controls, iPod volume setting does not matter. Tracks can be skipped on all Discs with stereo/steering controls.

My CD stopped working and I thought I would have to change the entire system. I came across this product and purchased it. Hooked it up in less than an hour and just took it across country. It worked better than expected and just as advertised. I got to keep my steering wheel controls too which is huge for me as either my 100 pound lab or bernese mtn. dog often sleeps on my free arm during the drive leaving only my hand on the sterring wheel to control the music.

I waited until after my cross country trip to review this. I can now highly recommened this

First off, yes, it works with the iPhone 3GS. Frustrating that this is not
documented anywhere, but I took a chance and it worked. Easy to install, does
everything it says it does. And now I have Pandora in my car, what could be more
awesome than that?

OUTSTANDING music quality and operation !

Written By , Winston-Salem NC on Friday, February 05, 2010

2008 Honda Ridgeline with CD player , XM, and subwoofer : I just completed installation of my USA SPEC IPOD interface & harness. I took about 2 hours taking my time. With the Honda radio removal instructions, removing the dash face and stereo was a breeze. I did call technical support to verify my harness location. Plugged harness in and connected interface. Once I plugged my IPOD in and took a few minutes to find the right buttons, I had OUTSTANDING music quality and operation ! (better quality than the IPOD hook up in my wifes 2010 Lexus !!! ) I love it ! TIPS : Installation on the Ridgeline is fairly simple, have your Honda stereo security code ready before you disconnect the battery, and I would recommend calling tech support to verify the way the wiring harness plugs in.
