Our take on the USA Spec iPod® Interface for Toyota, Scion, Lexus, and Isuzu

by Zak Billmeier
USA Spec

Just because you have the factory radio in your car doesn't mean you have to leave your iPod at home. Install USA Spec's iPod interface and listen to your favorite tunes through your car's speakers. You can control song selection, and up to five different playlists right from the radio, including shuffle mode. The interface also charges your iPod while it's connected. And with your iPhone® connected, you can even stream music from popular Internet services like PANDORA®, Livio Radio, iHeartRadio, and more.

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this adapter is compatible with your vehicle. The iPod interface uses the CD changer port, so any existing changer that you have must be disconnected.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Hands-on Research" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

Features

Overview: This interface connects a compatible iPod/iPhone to select 1997-2013 Toyota, Lexus, Scion, and Isuzu audio systems. Its on-board software translates commands from your factory radio's CD-changer controls into commands the iPod/iPhone understands. This interface allows you to retain CD changer, Rear Seat Entertainment/DVD, and Satellite Radio - while providing the following iPod/iPhone functions through your vehicle's factory radio:

  • Directs the iPod/iPhones's audio output to your vehicle's audio system for optimal sound quality playback.
  • Supports your iPhone's audio streaming apps, such as Pandora, Livio, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM & more (in Direct mode only).
  • Controls the iPod/iPhone via vehicle's radio and steering wheel controls (when applicable).
  • Charges the iPod/iPhone's internal battery, and charging stops automatically at one hour after the iPod is paused. The iPod/iPhone goes into sleep mode when charging stops.

Specific Features: The PA15-TOY displays song title and artist information on all radios with a "Text" button. The PA15-TOY allows connection through the XM/CDC port.

Vehicle Compatibility: Please consult the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to see if your vehicle is compatible.

iPod Compatibility: The PA15-TOY is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features when connected to a compatible Toyota, Lexus, Scion, or Isuzu factory radio (as of 10/3/2013):

Notes:

  • *Requires Apple Lightning to 30-pin Adapter cable (472LTN230P, sold separately).
  • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Operation Modes: The iPod/iPhone interface adapter features the following modes of operation:

  • Playlist Mode: You can create up to 6 favorite mobile playlist then use your radio's CD changer controls to access and control your playlist.
  • Direct Mode: Gives you complete control of your iPod/iPhone while it is connected to the factory radio. Your iPod is not locked out while connected to the radio and you are able to manually access your complete iPod/iPhone content. The Radio still can adjust song up/down random or shuffle play, but you can manually control your iPod/iPhone & select any playlist, genre or Artist of your choice. (Disk 8 is dedicated to Direct Mode use).
  • Hybrid Mode: Combines features of Direct Mode and Playlist Mode. You can create and access your favorite mobile playlist or directly access all your iPod content manually on your iPod. Your iPod displays song title information and iPod is not locked, so the iPod can be operated manually at all times. (Some iPods may not work in the Hybrid mode.)

App Streaming (in Direct Mode): Direct mode also lets you listen to the sound from your iPhone's downloaded music apps (such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, etc.) through your factory head unit & speakers. You will continue to control your iPhone's apps & view song/artist information from its touchscreen.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need applicable music service accounts.

Manual Correction: Although the current manual details a third operation mode, Hybrid Mode, the PA15-TOY does not offer this feature. Hybrid Mode was removed to improve operational consistency.

iPod Text: Pressing the TEXT button on your factory radio while your iPod/iPhone plays in the Playlist mode, allows the artist name and song title to be displayed on your factory radio. The Artist name is displayed at the first time press of the TEXT button and song title is displayed at the second time press of the TEXT button. The Playlist disc number and track number will be displayed at the third time press of the TEXT button.

Note: Track search by artist, song title or album are not supported. Some radios do not have the TEXT button feature.

iPod Playback: All audio tracks on the iPod/iPhone will be played with text display at Disc 7 in Direct Mode, or Disc 8 without text display. The track order is determined by the default order on the iPod. Selecting discs 1 through 6 on the factory radio will allow playback of 6 playlists on the iPod/iPhone. You can select a playlist by pressing the Disc Up or Disc Down buttons. Playlists which are created for direct access must be designated with the word "TOYOTA" and the disc number. If no "TOYOTA" playlists are designated, the first six playlists on the iPod/iPhone are accessible from the Disc 1 through Disc 6 buttons.

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod/iPhone input on the PA15-TOY there is an auxiliary input (stereo RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, or game system. The aux input is selected at CD 9 Track 1 using the factory radio controls. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod/iPhone connected. To use the auxiliary input on the interface, dip switch #1 must be set to the "On" position.

Controls: The factory radio's controls give you access to the following iPod/iPhone functions:

  • Scan: plays first 10 seconds of each track in the current playlist (if scan is pressed at Disc 7, it will play all songs in the iPod/iPhone for 10 seconds each)
  • Random (Shuffle): songs in the current playlist are played back in random order (some radios have a "P scan" button for this function)
  • Track Up/Down: the "Next" button advances to the next track in the playlist; the "Prev" button allows you to jump to the beginning of the currently playing song
  • Fast Track Search: the "Fwd" or "Rev" button will advance or retreat through the tracks in increments of 10 (i.e. 04, 14, 24...)

Note: Repeat play is not supported by this interface. Switching to another source, such as AM/FM, CD, or Cassette, puts the iPod/iPhone into pause mode.

USA Spec Bluetooth Interface Compatible: The USA Spec PA15-TOY works with the USA SPEC BT35-TOY Bluetooth interface (sold separately). They simply daisy chain together.

My Toyota IPOD Adapter

Written By Eugene C., Rogers, AR on Saturday, July 19, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have installed and enjoyed my IPOD Adapter since March 2009. I actually installed it myself. I was more concerned about disassembling the dashboard components. I even called the Crutchfield Tech Guys ahead of time to make sure that someone would be available to help me during a 10:00 -12:00 Saturday morning installation. The dashboard installation instructions were easy to follow. I think I was done in less than one hour, and 45, minutes (first timer). I am very pleased. My Music Sounds Great! Because I am on road a lot, I listen to a variety of music, audio books, speeches, sermons, and comedy on my IPOD. People often assume they are listening to Great Radio, with a Powerful Signal. My 2008, Toyota Corolla is a tiny car, but my factory radio sounds huge with the help of my USA-SPEC, IPOD Adapter. Thanks So Much Crutchfield!

USA spec iPod

This device updates the electronics in older cars so that you can plug you iPod or iPhone in to the stereo portion of the car. It is a much needed update for any older car model!
Pros:
Makes it possible to plug in your favorite music and update the existing equipment without buying a whole new stereo.
Cons:
The wire is not attractive!

Ipod adapter for Lexus car radio

Written By pbtay, Asheville, NC on Monday, August 05, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Product was easily installed by my local Best Buy auto tech. Most of the time is spent in opening and closing the dash. Product works perfectly with separate Lexus adapter, also bought from Crutchfield. You must experiment with pushing you car radio's different buttons, to find the one that activates the menu on the ipod screen. Ipod menu did not display at first, but it did after I pushed one of the radio channel buttons. All my ipod songs sound great through the car's speakers. This is an excellent product for those who want ipod connectivity in their older car.
Pros:
Great sound. Cord hides easily inside closable compartment on dash.
Cons:
No cons really.

ipod interface for 2000 Toyota Solara

Written By Jim M., Natick,MA on Monday, July 08, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works great, sound great, I installed it in the glove box of my 2000 Toyota Solara with velcro, the hardest part was running the wires from the radio to the glove box. The wire that connects to the ipod comes out under the ashtry with no modification, very easy. Starts playing as soon as you plug the ipod in and you control through the radio. I'm very pleased with this product.
Pros:
Easy to use once you get the hang of it, meaning when you switch it from playing music lists to playing in shuffle mode or down the list of songs in order. I don't have to buy an aftermarket radio to use ipod
Cons:
Installation can be tricky because of tight spaces in the dash, but was'nt bad overall.

USA Spec iPod Interface

Written By iPod +, Rockville, MD on Sunday, June 23, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When my wife's 06 Avalon (no Bluetooth) was new, I installed what turned out to be a poorly-designed iPod connection. It lasted about 6 months. With the USA Spec device, she can now play her iPod music library, and play Pandora, and run a GPS app with voice direction over the car speakers. I'm hoping we'll learn that calls on her iPhone will work that way, too. Great device.
Pros:
Highly versatile; reasonably priced; easily installed.
Cons:
Haven't found any yet.

2005 Tundra install

Written By Tundra Owner., Florence, Ky on Friday, June 14, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The product works great. I have a 2005 Toyota Tundra 4 door Limited with the rear DVD player. My issue came with the instructions that did not tell me where the location of the ECU to plug in my harness. It was under my center console at the very back under the rear seat cup holders. I did not have instructions on how to remove the console to access it either. Crutchfield tech was able to point me in the right direction on where to look.
Pros:
I now can use my iPod in my truck.
Cons:
Instructions do not help on install for any one with the OEM rear DVD player.

In love (again)

Written By 4Runner Chick, Dinwiddie, VA on Thursday, March 28, 2013

I love this SO much that when I totaled my 2000 4Runner, which I had this installled in, and got my 2005 4Runner this was literally the FIRST thing I purchased for my "new" 4Runner. I love the fact that I can still use my controls on my stering wheel with this product. I wll say it was a little trickier to find how I was going to run it in the 05 4Runner, becuase in my 2000 I just ran the cord up through where my e-brake was so I didn't have to put holes any where. In my 05 I ended up drilling a hole in where the ash tray thing is with the cig lighter jack, but I like it because now I can tuck it away out of sight. Also I will say the dash in the 05 is more of a pain to take out...but that's a Toyota thing! Literally the BEST thing you can do for your Toyota factory stero trust me like I said I have bought 2 of these for my 2 Toyotas. Oh and need I mention my mom was so jealous she got one for 98 4Runner and yes she is just a pleased!
Pros:
I can use my Ipod with my factory stero and it works with my stering wheel controls. Clarity is great, just like listening to your Ipod with head phones or the regular radio.
Cons:
NONE!

Thank you to Crutchfield Advisor- Niles. Purchasing an iPod adapter for my 2004 4Runner w/ Nav. system solved my problem, save me a huge money and I think the devise is far better than the CD player. Best buy ever.
Pros:
Installations not bad , excellent clear sound quality. Full control of iPod from the head unit and steering wheel buttons. No need to expose my iPod Classic all I did is hide it inside the glove compartment while listening to my favorite music which I missed for so long.
Cons:
For saving me a BIG BUCKS it is a NO.

iPod adapter for 2004 Lexus RX330

Written By John H, Gilroy, CA on Monday, June 04, 2012

This was a quick and easy installation once I saw a YouTube video on how to get the radio out of the dash. A 10mm socket removed the 4 screws holding the radio in place and a plastic spatula acted as a prybar to remove the snap-in, plactic bezels. The adapter cable that came with the interface snapped into the CD changer socket on the back of the OEM radio. The hardest part of the job was routing the cable to a convenient location.
Pros:
Everything was included in the kit. The wiring diagram was simple and easy to understand.
Cons:
It would have been nice to have a link on hte Crutchfield web site showing how to remove the radio. As it was, that research took about as much time as the installation.

Almost perfect...

Written By JCole, Jackson, MS on Thursday, May 24, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my 2007 FJ Cruiser. The install was very simple. And the sound quality is great. But I really wanted more control over the iPod than what the unit offers. In my truck tricks the head unit into treating it like another CD changer, and looks for my playlists first. But if I just go to CD 7 (I believe), it will allow me to fully control the iPod through the head unit...but since it acts like a CD, it will go through the first 99 tracks. So to really get full access to my music, I have to put it in 'iPod Direct' mode (CD 8). Which is kind of a pain, because I originally bought the unit so that I could keep my iPod out of sight, and only take it out of the truck to update my music library. So now I am trying to figure out a discreet way to mount my iPod where it is out of sight, but still accessible.
Pros:
Easy install, great sound
Cons:
Doesn't give you full control of iPod when it 'tricks' the head unit into thinking it is another CD. So I still have to keep my iPod within reach rather than tucked away.

LOVE IT!

Written By rowlettsm, Chesterfield, VA on Saturday, March 03, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this product (and the company). I have spent several hundreds on FM transmitters over the life of my 4 iPod. I honeslty have bought at lest 6 different models and brand all to be disappointed. Finally I came across the PA15-TOY and decided why not I have tried everything else. It was so easy to install. Honeslty I had it done in less than an hour. It is amazing. The sound quality is great, no more searching for clear stations, charges my iPod and it works with so many different iPod models. I also like the fact that with this product I get to keep my CD player (not that I ever use it, but it is nice to have). I wish I would have save time, money and hassel and pruchased this YEARS AGO. It's a MUST HAVE!
Pros:
EVERYTHING!
Cons:
Honestly nothing!

Finally direct iPod hookup for my Avalon!

Written By Anonymous, Camilla, GA on Monday, February 13, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was glad to finally have a direct iPod hookup for my Toyota Avalon. Sound quality was very good. I also loved that this adapter had an option for an RCA/Aux. output which worked great for my Pioneer Inno XM receiver. My only gripe with this piece is the lack of a scroll by artist with the factory controls. You can only scroll through playlists and by song. Easily circumvented by using the direct iPod controls though.
Pros:
Great sound quality. RCA/Aux. output for other devices
Cons:
No artist scroll through radio controls

Great Product!

Written By Hoss, Oldsmar, FL on Wednesday, December 28, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Crutchfield sales associate was very helpful and patient on the phone in walking me through the options in making my son's truck radio compatible with an i-Pod or non-iPod portable devices. He recommended this USA Spec iPod and the Scosche RCA cable. Even though I placed my order a week before Christmas, it arrived timely without a delivery charge. I could not be happier with the service or the product.
Pros:
This iPod interface was a breeze to install on my son's 2006 Toyota Tacoma, with the help of step-by step instructions from a thread on Toyota Tacoma forum which included photos regarding removing the radio so you can access the CD port in the back. If you plan on using a device other than an i-anything, be sure to get the Scosche I6RCA35A RCA cable. The sound is great!
Cons:
Nothing. It works like a charm.

Works great!

Written By parky, San Jose, CA on Sunday, December 25, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a super easy install. The Crutchfield instructions were spot on. The only thing that took any effort at all was to find a place to actually fit the unit behind the dash so it would not rattle around. I just ran the iPod cable into the flip out CD tray below the radio. Its a great way to keep an iPod out of sight.

I did have to change the settings on the little switches on the side. The instructions mentioned that I might have to try different options. The basic settings did play, but the built in radio controls did not change tracks. I tried the "B" settings in the instructions and that worked perfectly.
Pros:
This worked really well in our 1998 Toyota Sienna. The controls and playlists work fine. Installation was very easy. Sound is way better than the cassette adapters that we used to use. I never thought we would get an iPod interface that worked this well on a 13 year old car! It charges new iPhone 4s.
Cons:
There seems to be a bit of hiss when nothing is playing, more than I would have expected. But its not noticeable over normal background noise while driving, and I really cannot tell its there when there is actually music playing.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I was told I needed an adapter cable that goes between my factory NAV and the stereo so I ordered that with the unit. No bass, tinny sound. USA Spec thought their unit was defective so Crutchfield sent out a replacement unit and interface. No luck. Joe @ USA Spec asked if their was a jack on the back of the radio to plug the cable in directly without the CAS-LEX cable and sure enough there was. Perfect. My Sirius radio now plugs in directly, this little gem is velcro'd inside my glove box and I just have to push the CD button twice to access it. The factory sound system is now the limiting factor on sound quality and the cassette adapter is now in a landfill somewhere. Great product, great support.
Pros:
Other than getting to the back my IS300's radio this product is stupid simple to install and use.
Cons:
Didn't work the first two times but Joe at USA Spec's tech support is a genius.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The adapter was very easy to install, probably took less than a half hour in my '05 Tacoma. I like the fact that it automatically pauses my ipod nano when i turn the stereo off and then starts playing again when turned back on. Also charges and allows you to change through songs on your ipod using the stereo controls. Sound quality is excellent.

Easy install in 04 Sienna with NAV

Written By Tom C, Dayton, MD on Thursday, October 06, 2011

It took less than an hour to install from start to finish, and it really works great. The install instructions from Crutchfield weren't that specific as to installing the PA15TOY in a Sienna with the GPS NAV unit, but it was easy to find video's online of someone removing the receiver. Sound is excellent, a big improvement over using any of those "plays on some FM station" units (I had tried several). Very pleased with the purchase.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed the USA Spec iPod adapter in my 4-Runner with JBL yesterday. The Crutchfield master sheet was flawless and made the installation mostly a snap. The only real challenge was finding a suitable spot inside the dash to locate the unit, and then making sure it was secured, but that was not a big deal. So far, the unit works exactly as promised, and the sound quality is excellent. It was a very straightforward project.

Spec w 2001 Sequoia / JBL

Written By HC, Northern VA on Wednesday, August 10, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased for our Sequoia with the JBL stereo and changer. Crutchfield instructions for removing factory radio were perfect. Total install took 1 hour. Installed the Spec unit in the center console. Works well, sounds good. All modes on the Spec work, cd7 is playlist, cd8 is direct control using the iphone or ipod. I've listened to pandora and mobile xm using the iphone.

A couple additional notes. Installing in the center console allows the cable to the ipod/iphone to reach the back seat. Great for your kids, might drive you crazy. The clip that attaches to the iphone/ipod is larger than apples. As a result it might not work with your iphone/ipod case. I filed the plastic on the clip around the edges, solved the problem.

I definitely recommend.

Was easier than I expected. Only took 15 minutes to install in my 2006 Tacoma. The sound coming through is great. I like the feature that allows me to control my playlists from either the radio or my Ipod. No more listening to so much talk on the radio.

2011 RAV4

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This interface works great in my 2011 RAV4 (3rd gen) as it did in my previous 2004 RAV4 (2nd gen). Text on the stereo display works as advertised. I was able to install it by removing only the lower glove box; did not have to remove the JBL unit; just reached behind and plugged it in! Please note that when I purchased this car recently the dealership installed 2 Toyota iPod interfaces and neither would work. We found out later that they will only work with the touch screen factory navigation system and not the JBL system.

Would be great if it actually worked

Written By Kat In TX 81, Austin, TX on Saturday, June 25, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the third generation of this product I've purchased. The first worked well with my 2005 Toyota Avalon, for 11 months. Then it died and I contacted the manufacturer for a warranty replacement.

They sent a new one quickly, and put a $100 charge on my credit card until I returned the failed unit. But they failed to give me return shipping instructions, even after I asked them three or four times (each time they'd say "oh yea, we'll get those instructions to you right away" but then not respond). Furthermore, the new unit wouldn't work correctly, and their tech support kept saying 'your radio must have problems'. By "wouldn't work correctly" I mean that the head unit and steering wheel controls wouldn't properly control the iPod, but I was able to play audio through the stereo ... so I wasn't completely out of luck.

But I'd paid for two units and didn't have full control of my iPod as their documentation said I should. Then the second unit died (I suspect their connectors are unable to withstand the temperature extremes of central Texas).

So I looked for a new box from a more reputable channel, and was happy to find Crutchfield selling one with a different brand name than the previous two I'd purchased. So I ordered it, and when it arrived I realized that it was simply a re- branded version of the previous Neo units. But I installed it anyway ... and was not surprised to find that it doesn't work correctly.

Now I'm back to emailing tech support ... sigh.

Works, but you're on your own for installation

Written By Rich, Austin, TX on Wednesday, June 01, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Device works great and we love using it and love that it enables us to keep the factory look. Installation is a bit of a wildcard. I'm a DIY-er, and unlike buying a replacement radio from Crutchfield, they offer no help for installing this thing, which requires removing the radio so you can plug the USA-SPEC device into the back of it. I had to find a third-party site that sold step-by-step instructions for removing the radio in my Lexus 330. Once I had those, installing this was relatively easy, although it took some trial and error to get it to work-started out thinking it would install in the CD changer input, but wound up using the satellite radio input. The iPod connector plug is bigger and bulkier than I'd like, which made it snaking it through to where I wanted it (the concealed ashtray compartment) a hassle. And the plug is snapped together rather than molded. It actually came apart during the installation, so I now have it taped together with electrical tape. Switching to a lower profile plug would make it easier to thread the plug through to a wider range of places in the car interior.

USA Spec iPod® Interface for Toyota, Scion, Lexus, and Isuzu

Written By EricB, Mystic, CT on Monday, May 09, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I don't write reviews often as I expect the product to work without issue. In that
regards, this iPod adaptor works as adverstised. I have a 2006 Tacoma with a
factory 6 disc changer. I connected the adaptor and still have use of my
steering wheel controls and the disc changer.

The hardest part of the process is running the cables - I ran mine to the center
console. There was no problem with it but I didn't use the master installation
sheet for my truck. I went to you tube and watched a video on how to remove
the radio and console - actually very easy.

I'm glad I bought this.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm big on getting the best deal so I debated on buying this item here or on eBay for
much cheaper but decided on here due to the service and return policy. The only
issue with the unit is trying to decide where to put the interface and wiring for the
iPod. I wanted to keep the interface accessible in case I wanted to utilize the RCA
jacks to plug something else into it. This requires flipping a small switch on the unit-
-hence the accessibility. But after much debate, I opted not to use it so I installed it
in an inaccessible area. Other than that, install was very straight-forward. If I didn't
think about it so much I could have had it installed in under a half hour. Sound
quality is very clear and it is a much better improvement over using a cassette
adapter for sound and a power inverter for charging. Best of all it makes the wife
happy because it is in her Rav4.

Works Great for a 2009 Camry

Written By Orangerusty, Austin, TX on Sunday, February 13, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in my 2009 Camry LE w/o nav. (If you have nav then you should get the PA20
o/w you should get PA15.) The install went very well and was much easier than other
installations I've done in the past. (I've put in a couple of radios in past cars but nothing
extensive.) I plugged in the device in the only spot it could go. The cords were long enough
that I could put the iPod connector in the glove box. I was able to set the actual box down on
the floor board under/behind the storage compartment at the bottom of the console. As
soon as I hooked up my iPod the functionality made a lot of sense. Very nice product, worth
every penny.

This is the way to go for an Ipod Touch to interface with the factory radio. I had a FM
wireless connection but in Phoenix it was very hard to not get a lot of interference. This
unit operates great and sounds great! It was also easy to install with the directions
provided by Crutchfield. I had the dash and console out in no time. For my 2006 Toyota
Tundra I mounted the unit under the console. Very easy!

USA ipod interface - 2007 Tundra (buckets/console)

Written By PeteS, Winthrop, WA on Thursday, February 03, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As always the Crutchfield support was spot on and top notch from questions prior
to purchase all the way through installation. This is my third Crutchfield
project and am continually impressed with how well these people are prepared and
available. I did not experience any of the issues others apparently have with
connections not being positive and tight, or controls not working as advertised.
I really like the auto-charging, auto-on/off aspect of the device, and the
sound is as good (maybe better) than in-home. That might say more about my
setup than the device. It may be operator error as I'm still learning how to
run this thing, but I'm wishing there was a way to scroll through your library
to find albums, artists, songs efficiently from in-dash controls.

A good Ipod solution for my Avalon

Written By Kevin, Delta, Utah on Thursday, January 27, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I first bought a new car stereo from Crutchfield but the digits were too small and the sunlight
of day made it impossible to view so I returned it. You can't beat the factory stereo for easy
day/night reading of the display. I tried this and installed it in about one hour and so far has
worked perfectly. The cable length was perfect to mount the device in the center console
box. I mostly loved the prefabbed connector which plugged right into the factory radio socket
without any wiring needed by me. Couldn't of been much easier. I have not tried the
iCarStereo Ipod app yet because it operates pretty well without any addition. You do have to
be a little careful removing the plastic air register so you don't break it.

This iPod adapter was super easy to install and the sound is amazing. However,
after two months the little iPod chord adapter fell off because it's made of
cheap plastic. I think that's the only part that has low quality, but it would
be nice to not have to search for it to cover the chord when not attached to my

Superb for '04 Sienna

Written By SteveP, NJ on Saturday, January 01, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

2004 Toyota Sienna, factory nav, factory JBL sound w/ tape player & single CD, factory
rear seat entertainment. Install was a bit different than anticipated. Note in manual said
it had to be hooked up to factory entertainment center control unit behind interior
passenger rear quarter panel. Called USA SPEC tech support to confirm. They were
easy enough to reach and were helpful. Advised I would also need the extension cable
from them, which I ordered from their customer service. Popped off the rear qtr panel,
and sure enough, the factory control unit was there. Had an empty plug in it that used
one end of the wiring harness (the other end wasn't necessary as you are not "splicing"
in, you're just plugging in). This is the CD changer input on the factory control unit.
Shows up now as the CD changer in the audio system. Pulls in the 1st six playlists (or
you can use the 1st six playlist naming convention), all songs (Disc 7), and direct control
(Disc 8). Works and charges with both nano and ipad. Steering wheel controls still fully
operational. Single CD, tape player, rear DVD, all still operational. Did notice it still
charges even when the key is off. Overall very pleased. Easy install. Perfect plug and
play functionality.

Works well, when it works

Written By JohnI, Colorado on Thursday, November 04, 2010

Crutchfield instructions were very helpful, but the product wasn't well made.

1) some of the cables were loose in the connector that attaches this to the factory Toyota
Highlander JBL stereo.
2) periodically, it would only play out of speakers on one side of the car.
3) periodically, it would stop working and I would have to pull the dash apart to
disconnect and reconnect everything.
4) finally, it just died.

I liked the unit when it worked. Just very frustrated that I had to mess with it so much.
Nothing against Crutchfield, but the quality of this product was lacking. I will replace it
with a different brand.

USA Spec iPod® Interface for Toyota, Scion, Lexus, and Isuzu

Written By EricP, Massapequa,NY on Tuesday, October 26, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very cool product. Easy connections. The toughest part is getting to your
radio. I found some step by step instructions on the internet. Installed mine
in a 2002 Lexus 430 LS. Interfaces with all the controls nicely: (Nav system
touch screen, steering wheel controls, etc.) There are a few quirky things like
a 'grayed' out control that you can get to in another way. I like to keep the
display screen on "OFF" when I am not using the NAV. So it was a nice surprise
to see the songs pop up on the display with each change of track.
MOST IMPORTANTLY: The sound is fantastic. I can't believe how much better it
sounds than the cassette adapter I had been using.
The Crutchfield staff were helpful in ensuring that I was ordering the correct
equipment. Ordering was easy and the tracking system kept me well informed.
Thanks folks! Chalk another one up in the "Win" column!

Cruthfield support was very nice and ship a replacement unit next day. The 2nd set works great for me. On ios 4.0 it shows " Accessory not optimized for iphone" every time you plug in and you just have to hit dismiss key. Other than that, the sound quality is acceptable, not as good as CD, but close.

I recently installed this product on my 2007 Lexus IS250. It works great! You access the ipod and auxillary connection through the CD changer controls. The sound quality of a direct connection is far supieror to any FM transmitter any day!

The only difficulty I came across during installation was accessing the back of the stereo to connect the component, especially removing the air conditioner registers in the center dash. But make sure you have a putty knife (doesn't scratch!) and a lot of patience and you'll be good to go.

I highly recommend this product.

Not usable in the real world

Written By tacobronco, Denver, CO on Wednesday, August 04, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wasn't at all happy with this unit, and ended up returning it and getting an aftermarket head unit with built-in integration.

The particulars: I have a 2005 Tacoma and an iPhone 3GS that has NOT been upgraded to OS4. I installed the unit, and yes, technically speaking, it could play the iPhone through the car stereo. However, I had two big problems:

1. Occassionally the sound would be fuzzy and full of static. I tried everything I could think of to troubleshoot this issue, including various DIP switch settings and putting the phone in airplane mode, but I still had this intermittent problem. The only thing that would cure it was to power cycle the interface box (reboot it?).

2. The other main problem was volume. Specifically, it is very, very low. You literally have to crank the stereo volume to max to get a normal listening volume with the vehicle parked in the garage, which isn't loud enough when the vehicle is driving. And of course, cranking the volume brings out all the hiss in the stock system, and makes changing sources an eardrum-shattering experience.

I have no idea if these issues are particular to the version of stereo I have, but I decided that they were not livable, especially when aftermarket head units designed for iPod intergration are the same price (or even cheaper!). Too bad, the concept of this product (easy-to-install iPod integration for existing factory systems) is a good one, just wish is worked!

Does not work right with Iphone 3GS v4

Written By James, Jacksonville, NC on Saturday, July 24, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed the PA15-TOY Ipod adapter in the stock stereo of my 2010 Tacoma Access Cab (non JBL). When my Iphone 3GS was plugged in it gave an error message stating that the accessory did not support charging, however it did actually charge. The sound quality was better than the stock auxiliary input, however the volume needed to be increased from 25 to 50+ on the head unit when driving (I am running amps as well). The stock auxiliary input would not allow enough volume on the Ipod to hear at all if you had the windows open. My phone worked fine, just had low volume, even with all settings on the Iphone maxed out. It did shut off the music when I recieved a call and played internet radio through the head unit. Then I installed software V4.

Now I get an error message stating that the accesory is not supported and it does not charge. However, it does still play through the adapter. Unfortunately, the volume is now just as bad as the stock auxiliary input. Today, I plugged my Ipod classic in and it works fine (just as loud as the radio), so it is the Iphone, not the adapter that causes the problem. In any case, I am replacing the stock head unit soon so I will deal with it until then. But, if you are considering the PA15-TOY, don't expect it to work with the Iphone 3GS.

Good alternative for Tacoma w/JBL system

Written By Bart, Arizona on Friday, July 09, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 2007 Tacoma w/JBL sound system. I wanted up upgrade the radio with an aftermarket radio etc. but after doing the math on that I decided to go with the Ipod adapter. Remember for Tacomas w/JBL system you need a special (and pricey) wiring harness for aftermarket radio. So, even though I think this product is pricey as well it turned out to be the best alternative. I am satisfied with the product---here are my pros and cons.

Pros
1. Product works as advertised and the sound from my Ipod is great.
2. Easy installation with no special wiring needs like spicing wires etc. All wiring options came with the product - 20min and your are done
3. Easy switch between Ipod and CD changer and still can use steering wheel controls

Cons
1. Price
2. Crutchfield installation procedures were a little weak and generic.

I originally had Toyota install their iPod interface kit into my 2010 Tacoma. wasn't compatible with the embedded XM Satellite stereo. Super easy installation, thanks to Crutchfield, the USA SPEC worked like a charm. I can control 6 playlists or use the iPod Direct feature for more options. Works seamlessly with my 3GS, Classic 4th Gen iPod and Nano. I purchased the Navigon app from apple and now have instant GPS with voice commands coming through my stereo. I'll be purchasing another one to install in my wife's 2007 Camry.

This product was a breeze to install. A little confusing because there is an extra plug that doesn't plug in any place. I installed in my 07 tacoma and the sound quality is just like a CD. Amazing, kills an FM transmitter. Only catch ... It does NOT charge my Iphone 3GS or any other ipod for that matter. I called and they said to check the connections, did that and still nothing. I am going to try and look into a possible replacement. Not sure if I got a bad cable. Cheers!

However, if you keep your iphone in an otter box, the plug is too wide and won't connect.
Also, the direct mode defaults my ipod settings to continuous play, no shuffle. This
means you have to manually switch the ipod to shuffle songs. Not a big deal, but not
ideal either.

Good, but...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation is a breeze, and as always, Crutchfield's instructions are spot-on
with every minute step written out. Beware, if you keep your iPhone in an Otter
Box, the charger cable is too wide to fit. You can still manually control the
iPhone and run audio using a 3.5mm to RCA cable connecting the RCA jacks on the
interface to the iPhone's headphone jack. When the phone is out of its
protective box, and I plug in the charger cable, my iPhone 3GS displays a
warning message which says that the device is not compatible with my phone. You
can ignore the warning and everything works as advertised, and tech support
assures me that's the right thing to do, but it still strikes me as a bit fishy.

This works great for a 2008 RAV4 with the JBL sounds system. Plugged right in without having to remove the stereo - only had to remove the glove box to get behind the stereo. The box works as described and charges an iphone 3GS. The iphone displays a box that says it won't charge with the connection, but it still does.

OUTSTANDING music quality and operation !

Written By Anonymous, Winston-Salem NC on Friday, February 05, 2010

2008 Honda Ridgeline with CD player , XM, and subwoofer : I just completed installation of my USA SPEC IPOD interface & harness. I took about 2 hours taking my time. With the Honda radio removal instructions, removing the dash face and stereo was a breeze. I did call technical support to verify my harness location. Plugged harness in and connected interface. Once I plugged my IPOD in and took a few minutes to find the right buttons, I had OUTSTANDING music quality and operation ! (better quality than the IPOD hook up in my wifes 2010 Lexus !!! ) I love it ! TIPS : Installation on the Ridgeline is fairly simple, have your Honda stereo security code ready before you disconnect the battery, and I would recommend calling tech support to verify the way the wiring harness plugs in.

easy to install

Written By Norm, SF Bay Area, CA on Friday, January 15, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Despite the Crutchfield car configurator saying this doesn't work in my 2010 Toyota RAV4 V6 Limited (JBL, XM, non-Nav) or 2004 Prius (non-MP3, non-Nav), it does. I installed the PA15 in both of them and have them working with my iPhone 3G & 2nd & 4th gen Nanos without any issues. Note that the Y-harness has 2 connectors coming out of the ipod adapter, but you only connect one into the back of the radio, into the external CD changer slot.

The install on the RAV4 was pretty straightforward, the Prius a little more involved (only b/c I had to remove much more of the dash to get to the radio). I have been happy with it so far!

Awesome quality, easy install

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Highly recommended great buy.

Just bought a new van and was looking for a better quality way to enjoy my iPod than a FM transmitter. After looking a numerous stereos, I was looking at almost $600 for something double wide. Went to the iCarStereo section and found this adapter. The install was very straight forward and only took more than an hour because I wanted to find the best spot to hide the adapter and the cable...

TIP: Turns out there is an ideal spot under the steering wheel on the right side above the panelling, there are some plastic mounts that are the right width!!!

Only CON, is that when I plug the iPod in, it goes to random and repeat all songs. I mainly listen to podcasts or playlists, so I have to switch to the next disk (direct mode) and change the repeat setting to off on the iPod. Plan to call manufacturer for options.

This product comes with all the cables needed and was super easy to install in my Tacoma. It sounds better than I expected. The only problem was that Crutchfield instructions did not show how to get the dash panel off, so I had to look this up using google on my own. No big deal.

I added this to my 99 Toyota 4Runner. It works just like it says and was an easy install. 6 play lists can be controlled with your stereo or you can use the IPod manually. I used the auxillary inputs for a portable satellite radio (much better then the antenna adapter i was previously using). This is a great way to use your Ipod with a factory stereo.

Great Solution

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

One of the better solutions to get your ipod working w/ your factory radio. Fairly
easy to install if you can figure how to get your radio pulled out of the dash. The
steering wheel controls rock. I used dip switch 1, which allows me to random play
my entire music library. Then, if there's a specific song or album i want to hear, i
can toggle between ipod control or dash (and steering wheel) control. Not sure
what they are talking about with the 6 playlists, but that seems complicated to
me. Every once in a while(6 mos.), i have to re-seed the connections, but other
than that, it blows XM radio out of the water!

Great product!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in a 2000 Toyota Sienna. Stock stereo with AM/FM, cassette, and single slot CD, no RDS text functionality, CD button on front, and steering wheel controls. iPod is 16 GB 2nd generation Touch, and charges while connected.

Works exactly as advertised and delivers great direct-connect sound. Was very easy to install and retains all original system functionality, while adding an additional aux input. Thanks Bryce!

I mounted the USA Spec device in the bottom console CD drawer. Drawer can be closed with cable running out, and iPod and cables can be stored out of sight in closed drawer.

Additional CAS-TCL Y-cable is required to retain the steering wheel control and is used instead of adaptor supplied. The Y-cable plugs into an extra port on the back, with the original cable in one leg and the USA Spec in the other. Main connectors on stereo remain untouched.

With iPod not connected, the CD button toggles between the original CD slot and the Disc 9 aux port. When the iPod is connected, the CD button also toggles to the iPod, which functions like a multi disc CD player using Disc 1 thru 8.

Pressing Disc up and down toggles through playlists 1 thru 6 if they exist. If not, disc up and down toggles between Disc 7 and 8. Disc 7 is all songs with no iPod control. Disc 8 allows iPod control of artist/album.

Volume is changed only by stereo/steering controls, iPod volume setting does not matter. Tracks can be skipped on all Discs with stereo/steering controls.

Much Easier than Expected

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had been procrastinating on getting some sort of iPod adapter for a while
because I had no idea how to actually get into and behind my radio. I
asked a friend if he knew where I could get a manual or something for my
2006 Tacoma to show me how to open my radio. He said go to crutchfield,
the price maybe a little more but it's worth the tech support and every item
comes w/ step by step instructions. He was absolutely right.

I gave this item 4 stars instead of 5 only because I wish I could use my
iPod to control my music and see the title of the song on the radio display,
it's one or the other. Other than that, easy to install and easy to use. Two
thumbs up!!!

Fairly Easy to Install

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have an '04 Toyota 4Runner Sport with factory 6 cd changer. Well, this wasn't as hard to install as I thought it might be. First time installer (really don't mess with much except the dvd player and such). The Crutchfield notes were absolutely necessary, and the item's instructions were pretty slim, but okay. The connection to the radio back required a bit of process of elimination because the instructions do NOT show a visual of what you are connecting to. I must say that I called Tech Support for help and Marty was a star! He had me up and running in no time. One BIG thing missing in the instructions - if you have a feature button that allows you to turn off the curtain airbags (for off- road use), my Toyota dealer stressed big time that I should not disconnect under any circumstances (notwitstanding Crutchfield's generic "remove the connections" instructions on that portion). I am sure they didn't know about that possible extra, but I wanted to let others know in case they are installing. Anyway, first time Crutchfield buyer, and hooked customer. Well worth any savings I might have missed by bidding at 1am on ebay... :) I give it a four out of five because getting to the ipod isn't super intuitive, but the fact that I have a connection and it sounds great is well worth it! Thanks, Crutchfield!!

My CD stopped working and I thought I would have to change the entire system. I came across this product and purchased it. Hooked it up in less than an hour and just took it across country. It worked better than expected and just as advertised. I got to keep my steering wheel controls too which is huge for me as either my 100 pound lab or bernese mtn. dog often sleeps on my free arm during the drive leaving only my hand on the sterring wheel to control the music.

I waited until after my cross country trip to review this. I can now highly recommened this

2006 Toyota Tacoma Single CD factory stereo

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My application is a 2006 Toyota Tacoma Double cab with a factory single CD
stereo. The installation instructions were clear and easy to follow. I had
no trouble removing the radio and making the required connections. I
installed the unit under the right kick panal and ran the cord behind the
glove box and brought it out under the center console next to the
passenger seat for a nicely hidden installation. The unit works perfectly as
stated in the instructions and the sound quality is excellent. I highly
recommend this device. Great job by Crutchfield and my advisor, Bryce.
Thank you, Glenn

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After much research, I decided on this product as opposed to other brands. After about 40 minutes of installation, it was working like a dream with my ipod! I keep it in direct mode so that I can use my ipod controls to choose the songs vs. playlist mode where you select playlists from your radio controls. The product advertises a hybrid mode, but I can't get that to work for me. If you want to control your ipod on the actual radio, you will need to make playlists and name them a certain way. I'm very happy with it. The audio quality is very good and it was a breeze to install. I'm going to order another one for my other car!

Only way to tie into my factory radio

Written By ToddA, Charlotte, NC on Thursday, May 28, 2009

I do not own an iPod, but I bought this adapter for another vary important reason. I wanted a way to have a direct line input to my factory stereo so I could connect both my XM radio, which I wanted to connect directly instead of using an RF modulator, and my (non-Apple) MP3 player. My Lexus factory stereo has no external input for this purpose, but the iPod adapter plugged into a special input on the back of the factor stereo, and the adapter itself provides the input I needed. Thus, I am now happily listening to very high quality sound from my XM radio and my MP3 player, which was not possible in any other way I had been able to find.

This interface is super easy to install and works beautifully with my stock stereo. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to use the ipod in the car, it works as well as factory installed controllers that I've seen. And the audio quality is excellent, much better than an FM Modulator or cassette adapter.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this as a gift for a friend with a 3G iPhone. Though I could have bought the iPod adapter elsewhere for cheaper, I bought from Crutchfield because of the detailed specs for installation they include with the purchase. My friend has a Toyota Camry. I got the year of the car wrong when I made the purchase and the resulting instructions for dismantling the Camry's dash wasn't applicable. I called Crutchfield and 5 minutes later, they emailed me the correct specs. This was a super easy install - all you need is a flathead screw driver and a 10mm socket wrench. My friend doesn't use the DC power adapter, so I removed it and ran the iPod cable to her center console. I had the unit installed and the dash re-assembled in an hour! My friend can now charge her iPhone, navigate music from her factory stereo or from her iPhone directly and still make calls with her bluetooth! She's stoked!

Great option

Written By Tom, Enid, OK on Thursday, April 23, 2009

We like to use the iPod for audio books as well as for music. Using the USA Spec iPod® Interface with my 4th Gen iPod Nano we create one playlist for the book and others (up to 8, I believe) for music.

Read the instructions carefully-you may have to adjust the DIP switch settings depending upon your equipment.

With that said, installation on my Camry took about 20 minutes.

This installation is so much more convenient than either a FM Modulator unit or a cassette adapter. It controls the iPod so when you turn the car off the iPod shuts off too. With any other option you must remember to turn your iPod off. Additionally, with the iPod stowed conveniently-we use the glove compartment-it's not subjected to direct sunlight or prying eyes.

I am very pleased with the USA Spec iPod interface. I installed it in my 1999 Solara with the factory JBL sound system. It plugged right in to the stock CD changer port. I have access to six playlists via the stock stereo, or I can control my iPod Touch directly using the "Disk 8" setting. The sound is fabulous!! I was worried about doing the installation, but it worked out very nicely. The interface is hidden inside the dash with the iPod cable coming out under the ashtray. Slick!!

Effective way to play ipod over stock radio

Written By Andrew, Cincinnati, OH on Monday, March 30, 2009

Installed in my 01 Toyota Solara with JBL in dash 6 disc changer (adapter and indash changer can coexist). Installation was very easy, just a matter of removing the radio and running one wire from radio to the adapter. Functionality was pretty good, especially considering it's emulating a CD changer. However, I did have issues with sound quality. I am experiencing a horrendous background static when using the adapter. Apparently no one else had this problem, and I have a feeling it's my radio's fault. I'm not sure, but at this point I'm just going to return and get a new head unit. The adapter is pretty expensive, so your probably best replacing your stereo completely. But if keeping the appearance of the stock radio is important to you, this adapter is a good option. And one more thing, Crutchfield product support is nothing short of amazing.

I'm new to the world of IPod's and not too up to date with electronic gear,
but I do a two hour commute, four days a week and wanted to play my new
IPod Classic in the car. This unit works great! Easy installation, great
support from Crutchfield and USA Spec. In my car I mounted the USA Spec
box in the left wall of the glove box with some self-tapping screws and put
the IPod down in the little "cubby" below the shift lever. (I have a manual
gear box, I assume there's one of these in the automatic too.) Plenty of
cable to work with and everything is hidden out of sight. I love how I can
use up to six play lists, or pull the IPod out and have my passenger operate
it directly from the IPod. The display on my radio is great. Couldn't be
happier, except now I wish the digital files could be a little "warmer" in
sound. Thumbs up.

Sound is great, and installation was easy even though there wasn't detailed instructions for my specific vehicle. After I found this on Crutchfield, I searched for a cheaper price...and did find it cheaper. But, I decided to go with Crutchfield anyway at the higher price. Well worth it!
