Sound comes right through the XM radio as advertised. Didn't start up like they said in the literature, but works anyway and it might be operator error.

Pros: Steering controls work. Very easy to install in Chev Avalanche

2007 Saab 9-3 With NAV, Glitches.

Written By TiredFrog, Portland, ME on Friday, April 05, 2013

READ IF BUYING FOR A SAAB WITH NAV - The unit operates great, like it should. However it seems to be faulted when paired with a SAAB nav unit - tracks seem to skips forward or repeat at random intervals on their own. Tried with different ipods, iphone and exchanged the PA20-GM for a second unit. Still Skips. Rating 4 stars because this unit is technically not designed for this vehicle.

Pros: Good Display

Cons: Tracks Skip forward or Repeat randomly.

Works great in my 2009 Saab 9-3 w/Bose

Written By Eric, Chicago, IL on Sunday, January 27, 2013

Works great in my 2009 Saab 9-3 w/Bose sound system. Yes, that's right, in my Saab. If you own a Saab 9-3 2007-2011, Bose system or not, this will work in your car (as long as you have XM radio, which I know was standard equipment for 2007-2009, not sure about 2010 and 2011). This will absolutely NOT work in a 2006 and older Saab 9-3. The factory head unit is a re-purposed, re-programmed, and re-trimmed version of the standard GM head unit that you find, for example, in a Chevy Silverado (Saab did this to cut costs). Installation is easy, just remove rear passenger trunk liner to expose the XM unit, plug in the USA Spec in between the car harness and the XM unit, run the iPod cable to the front center console. Crystal clear CD quality sound. I have had this for 2 years and I've compared the sound quality between the same song (USA Spec vs. physical CD in player), and I can't tell the difference. Allows you to control (and charge) the iPod from the factory head unit, or you have the option of controlling it from the iPod. Displays song title, artist, genre, etc., even scrolls if it's a longer title. Great solution if you're like me and wanted to keep the factory stereo look. See cons below for my 2 complaints.

Pros: See above

Cons: The biggest complaint, by far, is the inability to change the iPod tracks with the steering wheel controls. Whether or not this is because of USA Spec programming or GM programming, I don't know. If you try and use the steering wheel track change buttons, it changes the radio station and stops your music. So, you just use the track change buttons on the head unit. Second, the provided iPod cable is NOT long enough to run from the trunk to the front. You have to purchase an iPod extension cable.

USA Spec iPod Control

Written By Iceberg, Washington, DC on Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The installation took me the same 10 minutes that everyone else says it took them. The sound was good, but the control features didn't work for me. I could see using this product if you don't have too many songs/albums/artists in your iPod. Since you can only go through 24 of any grouping at a time, without having to go out and back in again, it took me forever to get to certain music on my iPod. But, to be fair, I have eight hundred and something albums in my iPod. Just wasn't convenient, so I'm sending it back.

Pros: Easy to connect

Cons: Way too difficult to scroll through music choices

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit seemed to be ok based on what it is supposed to do but did not deliver in my 2009 escalade.

Pros: Good sound quality. Easy plug and play installation.

Cons: Unit never would perform all features advertised. I could not get all the menus to appear despite several attempts. Didn't get any help from Crutchfield techs and USA SPEC was not much help either. USA spec sent me a replacement unit that shut down entire radio and instrument panel. Needless to say I had to return both units.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my second USA Spec ipod interface purchase. I had great luck with the other interface in my 2001 Impala and now I'm enjoying this one in the 2011! This was so much easier to install in the new car because it connects to the satellite receiver in the trunk, rather than behind the radio like in the '01. Everything works great!

Pros: Minimum Installation Time, Great Features

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great Product. Like others it's easier to figure it out yourself than consulting with the directions. Love how you can control it from the navigation unit and set up short cut keys, or direct control from the Iphone. Purchased this for 2008 GMC with navigation.

Pros: Everything

Cons: directions are not great.

USA Spec Ipod Interface for GMC

Written By Brion L, Nashville, TN on Monday, February 06, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this product for a 2009 GMC Sierra. This thing is awesome. Installed in 15 minutes. Worked with no problem right out of the box. Well worth the money and thought it was a very good value. Worked with my factory stereo and steering wheel controls. Instructions from manufacturer were not up to date but if you throw them away and just figure it out for yourself you'll be less confused and very satisfied. My Ipod never sounded this good with the aux jack in dash

Pros: Sound is 100% better the aux jack Complete control of ipod through factory radio Simple install

Cons: Factory instructions not updated to specific auto manufacture model

Didn't Work For Me

Written By KP, MI on Thursday, April 14, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have an 09 Malibu and bought this so I wouldn't have to plug into the aux jack. Installation was a pain, though no fault of USA Spec. However, once I was able to access the XM module and plug in the unit, it didn't recognize my iPod. For some reason it only would charge my iPod and tune to the right station, but it would never really recognize the device. Tech support from USA Spec was just as good as their installation instructions. They gave me a serial number of a module for an exchange with Crutchfield but gave nor took any information from me about how to make sure I got that specific module. Needless to say, I'm just gonna return it and use the Aux jack...

Great product - 2007 Denali

Written By baker, Atlanta, GA on Thursday, March 24, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product works great in my 2007 GMC Denali. Took less that 10 minutes to install. Drop the glovebox, disconnect from the XM box, plug adapter in and run the cable to a convenient location to connect my iPhone 4. I would give it 5 stars with the exception of the documentation from the manufacturer. It is a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy..... Radio screen captures are almost impossible to read. Other than that, this is a great product.

Ipod adapter didn't work too well

Written By vcatfish, Roseville CA on Sunday, March 13, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This adapter didn't work too well. I have an early version (2003) classic Ipod and it is not compatible with this adapter. I tried my wife's Ipod nano (2009) and it worked a little better but would not recognize all the songs, playlists, artists, or albums. It was finicky. When it played songs, they sounded great. I will be returning this adapter - it doesn't quite work very well in my 2008 Avalanche.

Great Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in my 2007 Yukon XL Denali. The truck has factory NAV and XM.
Installation took under 10 minutes. Please note, you do not need to remove the radio for
this vehicle (and probably others) when you have XM. It plugs into the XM module which
is behind the glove box. The Crutchfield supplied instructions do not tell you this, nor did
they know how to get behind the glove box when I called tech support. It's easy though.
Open the glove box and feel up top until you come across a plastic tab which holds the
box from opening too far. Push up on that tab and the glove box drops right down. The
XM module is right there. I wrapped the extra cables together and stuck the module
back and up so it would be out of the way of the glove box closing. The USASPEC
instructions tell you where the XM module is located, so if it's behind the glove box this
might be useful for you. Easiest installation I have ever done.

iPod in GMC made easy

Written By Shoreman, Eastern Shore,MD on Wednesday, November 03, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This little interface device was very easy to install. It plugs right into
existing wiring that is right behind the glove box (which drops easily out of
the way by pressing at one spot). Once installed, plug your iPod into the
interface cable in your glove box. Playlist and song selection on your iPod is
then done from your existing Audio/Navigation display screen. No need to access
your iPod which remains stored out of sight in your glove box.

Quick and easy installation and reasonable functionality

Written By tekguy6, Southern Illinois on Sunday, July 04, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Added this to my 2007 Avalanche (Bose w/Nav), and found the installation extremely easy and completely tool-less. I've tested the unit with a 1st generation iPod Touch and a 5th generation iPod Nano, both work fine and exactly the same. The iPod plays via the XM feature of the factory stereo, this means the radio doesn't think there should be such a thing as next track (as there wouldn't be on an XM station). For this reason, the only way to change tracks is using the tuning dial on the right side of the radio, the steering wheel controls do work, but only to change playlist, artist or album -- not track. This is disappointing, but live-able. Were it not for this inconvenience, this unit would deserve five or even six stars for ease of installation and function. Using the nav screen, you can choose what playlist is playing or artist, or album. There is also an iPod Direct function, allowing you to use the controls on the iPod to play whatever you'd like -- including Podcast video (video plays only on the iPod screen).

Would give it six stars if I could...

I own a 2006 Buick Lucerne CXS pre-nav, XM-operational sat. receiver with the Harmon
Kardon 6-disk in-dash changer (factory installed). I don't consider myself an expert
installer (especially with a 40K Buick) and figured this out in minimal time. In fact,
finding the XM receiver in the trunk took the most amount of time (it was exactly where
they said it was). I installed the interface module in the lower center console with just
the Ipod cable visible (for connection) in the upper center console. I thought the glove
compartment would have been much more difficult. It turned out to be a very clean
install with no exposed wiring (I wouldn't stand for it). The best part? The sound quality I
get with an 80 gig Ipod Classic (all WAV files) through the stock HK system is absolutley
incredible--noise free and audiophile quality. You'll never run anything through the AUX
jack again...I have full steering wheel and display control of all Ipod functions. If there
was a downside it would be the manual--it doesn't read well at all. Amazing product.

control of my IPhone, through the radio now and all the bluetooth functions
opperate as they did before the install! if your lookin to control and charge
your ipod/Iphone... then this is the best unit for the job!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this item to incorporate Sirius Stiletto 2 into 2009 GMC Sierra sound system. Installation was very easy, but instructions for software set-up to interface with factory radio could have been much clearer. Written instructions assume you are connecting iPod & leave you to figure out the Stiletto on your own.

Sound quality is excellent. I had a chance to compare the factory XM to the Stiletto for about a week & the USA Spec GM iPod® Interface along with my Stiletto is much cleaner with better bass, mid-range & treble.

iPod in 2007 Yukon

Written By Anonymous, San Jose, CA on Monday, February 01, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this unit in my 2007 Yukon that has a non-navigation 6 disc changer AND has
XM radio. Found the XM unit directly behind the glove box, which easily drops open for
access. This unit's harness plugs directly in-between the head end and the XM unit --
easy install, without any problems. The most difficult part was snaking the iPod cable,
and then bundling it all up behind the dash.

Control of the iPod through XM253 is fairly well implemented on the non-nav radio. Also
allows direct control through the iPod's GUI. A previous review about not being able to
"track forward" -- I do not have this problem on my 2007 Yukon. I am able to do this
through the head end unit with the rotary control (with the musical note on it), and the
steering wheel selector with the >| notation on it. Since the sound output is through the
dock connector on the iPod, volume control is through the head end unit and not
controlled by the iPod, as expected.

The sound is outstanding, as you are by-passing the headphone jack of the iPod and
directly connecting via the dock connector to the head end unit. I highly recommend this
adapter! Keep a copy of the instructions on how to control the iPod in your glove
is a little counterintuitive in some respects. This absolutely beats any FM modulation

Easy installation on my 2010 Silverado with XM Radio. By the way there are no
instructions on install for this truck. It took me longer to find the XM module
(Behind the lower glove Box which pops down no tools needed ) than it did to
install it. Works well so far and gives me what I needed; stereo control of the
Ipod. Make sure to look at all the papers in the box. There are updates on what
looks look scraps in the box.

Lacking track forward

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I owned a previous version of the USA spec for my old GM and it was awesome. However, I was very disapointed to find out that the new PA20-GM for my new truck fails to have one major feature, track forward. This was a big bummer. I would much rather have no text and have the ablity to track forward. I am going to return.

Excellent product, easy intallation (8 minutes hardware....5 minutes settings), no need to desmantel the dash board or pull the radio out. Fast acces to data on ipod, complete display of the titles on radio screen (navigation radio).

Overall, anyway you have your music on the ipod, that's the way it's going to sound on your system.

Great product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a bit pricey, but I spent a year trying to find a good alternative to the stupid stereo and aux adapters for my Ipod...and this is worth the convenience.

I would like to see a few more features (I think it is a lot more feature rich if you have the navigation option), but it has the ones that matter; allows me to use the steering wheel controls, great sound quality, and allows me to mount the Ipod wherever I wanted, because all controls are through the stereo.

I'm very happy with it, it allows the best quality sound available without feedback.

iPod Text: The PA20-GM provides text based menu on the radio display to access Artist, Album and Playlist folders of your iPod.

Operation Modes: The iPod interface adapter features the following modes of operation.

  • Playlist Mode: You can create up to 6 favorite mobile playlist then use your radio's CD changer controls to access and control your playlist.
  • Direct Mode: Gives you complete control of your iPod while it is connected to the factory radio. Your iPod is not locked out while connected to the radio and you are able to manually access your complete iPod content. The Radio still can adjust song up/down random or shuffle play but you can manually control your iPod and select any playlist, genre or Artist of your choice.
  • Hybrid Mode: Combines features of Direct Mode and Playlist Mode. You can create and access your favorite mobile playlist or directly access all your iPod content manually on your iPod. Your iPod displays song title information and iPod is not locked, so the iPod can be operated manually at all times. (Some iPods may not work in the Hybrid mode.)

App Streaming (in Direct Mode): Direct mode also lets you listen to the sound from your iPhone's downloaded music apps (such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, etc.) through your factory head unit & speakers. You will continue to control your iPhone's apps & view song/artist information from its touchscreen.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need applicable music service accounts.

iPod Controls: The PA20-GM provides the following iPod controls from your GM factory radio.

  • Playlist: Allows you to access your iPod's Playlist folders. The 1st Playlist is the All Song folder on your iPod by default.
  • Artist: Allows you to access your iPod's Artist folders.
  • Album: Allows access of your iPod's Album folders.
  • Random: Playback of all your iPod tracks in random order.
  • 10x: You can skip ahead or backward 10 tracks of your iPod.
  • iShortcut: This is a "shortcut" to return to your connected iPod from any band of your vehicle's radio. Your iPod will begin playback from the last track played.

Auxiliary Input: In addition to the iPod input on the PA20-GM there is an auxiliary input (stereo RCA) for use with another source, such as a DVD system, satellite radio, or game system. This aux input can be used with or without the iPod connected. To use the auxiliary input on the interface, dip switch #1 must be set to the "On" position.
