Acid-test

Written By awd-s, Continental US on Sunday, November 04, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Since I took delivery of the CD-745 and wrote my initial review, it is now time to provide a short report that is informed by several weeks use of the equipment. I have been able to subject the player to an acid-test that it passed easily and should be repeatable.

Lately, I attended a live performance by the Claremont Trio, during which Emily Bruskin, Julia Bruskin and Donna Kwong performed Anton Arensky's "Trio No.1 in D Minor, Op.32". These three youthful and ardent spirits brought forth a passionate and brilliant rendition of Arensky's music that matched the beauty of their collective presence -- I closed my eyes so that I wouldn't be distracted by the performers. During the intermission, I bought their CD recording: "Shostakovich & Arensky Trios" on the Tria Records label. The key thing about this recording is that the engineer, producer and editor is Adam Abeshouse who has succeeded in doing justice to the music. The dynamic range is excellent and the recording clear so that, with the volume of the CD-745 set to between 15 & 20, the power, subtlety, and brio of the performers was well reproduced in my living room, very apparent in the vibrant and interesting scherzo. The tone controls were at their factory delivered settings, which is to say flat response unboosted in any way.

I am revising my rating of the CD-745 to five stars; it is well worth the money.

Value for money

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Before buying this product, I did some online research. All indications were that this unit compared favorably against the Bose Wave Radio system. But, some reviews mentioned early failure of the product display and slot-CD mechanism; it was these caveats coupled with free shipping and Crutchfield's reputation for good customer service that induced me to buy from Crutchfield.

I think that the Cambridge Soundworks CD-745 is much better value for money when compared to the Bose Wave Radio system. In black, the CD-745 is unobtrusive unlike the oddly shaped Bose product. A big negative against the Bose is its lack of front panel controls, meaning that you are dead-in-the-water when you lose its remote control.

Crutchfield gave prompt delivery of the CD-745. It arrived intact and undamaged. It worked as advertised upon installation. The CD-745 replaced a 1980s vintage component stereo system with free standing speakers. It is more than adequate for a small to medium-size room.

Sound quality is very good, if a little bright. Mostly, I listen to classical music and dislike unnaturally heavy base. There is sufficient tone adjustment to compensate for differences in source audio quality. I was particularly influenced by one review where the reviewer compared a Bose system side-by-side with the CD-745 and favored the CD-745. The CD-745 works best when located on a hard surface; soft surfaces will muffle the base response from the downward facing 4-inch woofer. I tried playing this unit at full volume and found the response undistorted. I tried a variety of CDs: jazz, classical, and gypsy-punk; all provided acceptable reproduction. Audio quality is very subjective and even the very best recordings cannot reproduce the experience of hearing music played live in a good concert hall; this is particularly true of classical music. At least two reviews I read were by trained musicians who thought the audio quality as good as or better than the Bose. I have heard a Bose and while the audio is good, I don't think it is worth the money. The CD-745 works for me.

I have used this product for the last two or three weeks. I don't have an iPod, so I can't comment on the iPod docking feature, but it should be a discriminator in the CD-745s favor.

Overall, I am satisfied to date. I will be more than satisfied if I'm still using this in twenty years.

Update after getting my replacement order

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me first start by saying Crutchfields customer service is truly great. I got my initial order that had the defective display on Tuesday 4/17/07. As noted, I called Customer Service that night and got the exchange underway.

I shipped the defective unit back to them on 4/18/07 & confirmed Crutchfield got it the morning of 4/20/07. I came home later that day to find my replacement unit had been delivered just 3 days later!

It's now 5/10/07 & this unit is everything I needed. All of these table top stereos seem to be a little over priced but I think the Cambridge Soundworks unit is a better value than a Bose Wave unit, the Tivoli music system, or the new Polk unit.

This Cambridge unit comes with a dock that recharges the iPod along with a remote that controls the iPod. You have to purchase this separately with the other units.

The sound is what I expected. A little too bassy & hollow sounding, but every table top unit I've ever listened to all sound like this. This unit sounds better than the Bose Wave though. I'm hoping the sound get's better once the speakers are broken in.

You can't be too far away from the dock to use the remote to control the iPod and it seems to get stuck every so often but I've heard that about other iPod docks too.

All in all I'm very satisfied with this unit. I really want to thank Crutchfield for the great customer service in making this exchange relatively painless. You can tell they have years of experience in providing QUALITY customer service.

Excited when ordering, disappointed when I got it...

Written By psk, Baltimore, MD on Tuesday, April 17, 2007

I was looking for a table top unit like this that had an iPod doc that would enable me to control the iPod too. This unit seemed to fit the bill so I asked Crutchfield to e-mail me once it was available.

Once it was delivered, I hooked it up right away. The radio reception for both am/fm was just ok without hooking up the supplied antennas. It wasn’t much better once I hooked up the external antennas but I think it has more to do with my area than the unit.

I tested out all the options & found it sounded & worked fine. We had the unit on during dinner for ambient sound & it sounded great.

After dinner, I sat in a chair next to the unit & saw the screen went dead. I tried pressing some of the buttons but the unit didn’t respond to anything so I had to unplug the power cord. Once I plugged the power cord back in the display was pretty much dead. I could barely read what was supposed to be displayed, but the unit sounded great.

Crutchfield is exchanging the unit thankfully (THANKS CRUTCHFIELD!) so I will let everyone know once I get the unit. I talked to their Customer Service a few moments ago & I should get the new unit by this Thursday (today is Tuesday 4/17/07). Stay tuned…
