InFocus

Our take on the InFocus ScreenPlay™ 4800

InFocus, the worldwide leader in digital projection, is headquartered in Wilsonville, Oregon. Projectors are their specialty, and while other companies have only recently begun to explore the potential of Texas Instruments' remarkable DLP™ (Digital Light Processing) technology, InFocus is building their 16th-generation DLP projectors! Their ScreenPlay projector series delivers home theater excitement that's totally "outside the box."

There's no better introduction to the pleasures of front-projection viewing than the value-packed ScreenPlay 4800 projector. Texas Instruments' DLP chip is the imaging "engine" of the 4800, and it provides the bright, punchy pictures that are the hallmark of this amazing technology. Images from DVD movies, TV shows, and video games really pop, even in a lighted room. The 4800's "dual-mode" DLP chip means that 4:3 material like regular TV and video games look great — and widescreen DVDs do too!

The 4800's built-in "scaler" upconverts regular TV and video signals to match the projector's native 800 x 600-pixel resolution. Widescreen sources like DVD utilize the projector's widescreen mode, with resolution of 800 x 450. Even at this price, you get advanced Faroudja DCDi™ video processing to smooth away picture glitches. The scaler can even downconvert high-definition signals from a separate HDTV tuner! (Like all front projectors, the 4800 has no built-in TV tuner of any kind, but the video inputs will accept signals from a satellite receiver or cable box, or you can use your VCR as an analog TV tuner.)

The ScreenPlay 4800 is our most compact projector. For occasional "event" viewing or videogaming you can keep the projector stowed away, then set it up on a table in just a few minutes. An optical zoom lens lets you expand the image up to 12 feet, to suit virtually any room or screen size. If you have a more permanent home theater setup in mind, you can ceiling-mount the 4800 (mounting hardware is not included, see "Accessories" above). The 4800 is small and lightweight enough (just 6.8 lbs.) to make portable home theater a reality. Bring it along to your vacation home, or loan it to your movie-loving friends — just make sure they remember to bring it back!

A/V inputs include composite video, S-video, and both standard and HD component video (component video connections require use of supplied adapter cables). When it comes to home theater bang for the buck, you'll have a hard time surpassing the ScreenPlay 4800.

For optimum performance, a separate projection screen is recommended.

Features

Adjustable Image Size: The projected image size can be adjusted from 40" to 200" diagonal. To achieve a 40" picture, the projector must be 4.8' to 5.8' from the screen. For a 200" projected image, the projector must be 25.2' to 30.5' from the screen. A 40" diagonal image is 32" wide, and a 200" diagonal image is 13.3' wide.

DLP Projection System: Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology from Texas Instruments is the only display solution that creates an entirely digital connection between a source and the screen in front of you.

Dual-mode DLP Chip: The 4800 uses a dual-mode DLP chip with 4:3 native aspect ratio and 800 x 600-pixel resolution. The built-in "scaler" upconverts regular TV and video signals to match the projector's native 800 x 600-pixel resolution. Widescreen sources like DVD utilize the projector's widescreen mode, with resolution of 800 x 450.

Faroudja DCDi De-interlacer with 3-2 Pulldown Processing: When converting film-based 480i material to a progressive video image, the motion adaptive deinterlacing prevents the introduction of motion artifacts and jagged edges. The result is a sharper, noise-free picture with finer details.

Picture Menu: The Picture Menu gives you the following options:

  • Keystone: When the image is projected at an angle, you can use the Keystone feature to adjust the image vertically, resulting in a squarer image.

  • Contrast: controls the degree of difference between the lightest and darkest parts of the picture and changes the amount of black and white in the image

  • Brightness: changes the intensity of the image

  • Color: adjusts a video image from black and white to fully saturated color. The color setting applies to video sources only.

  • Tint: adjusts the red-green color balance in the image of NTSC video images. The tint setting applies to NTSC video sources only.

  • Aspect Ratio: allows you to choose 4:3, 16:9, or Native. Select Native to see the unmodified input with no resizing by the projector.

  • Presets: allows you to store up to 3 user-defined presets into memory

  • Advanced Menu:

    • Sharpness (video sources only): changes the clarity of the edges of a video image. You can choose one of the following settings: Sharpest, Sharper, Standard, Softer, or Softest.

    • Color Temperature: changes the intensity of the colors. You can choose one of the following settings: Cool, Warm, or Warmest.

    • Color Control: allows you to individually adjust the gain for the red, green, and blue colors

    • Video Standard: When it is set to Auto, the projector attempts to automatically pick the video standard based on the input signal it receives. If the projector is unable to detect the correct standard, the colors may not look right or the image may appear "torn." If this happens, manually select a video standard by selecting NTSC, PAL, or SECAM from the Video Standard menu.

    • Overscan (video sources only): removes noise around the video image

    • Phase (computer sources only): adjusts the horizontal phase of a computer source

    • Tracking (computer sources only): adjusts the vertical scan of a computer source

    • Horizontal/Vertical Position (computer sources only): adjusts the position of a computer source

Settings Menu: The Settings Menu gives you the following options:

  • Audio: allows you to adjust the volume of the internal speaker

  • Sources: When the Auto Source feature is on, the Source Enable feature indicates which sources the projector attempts to lock onto. You can use the Source Enable feature to eliminate certain sources from this search, which will speed the search.

  • System: You can adjust the following System settings:

    • Rear: reverses the image so you can project from behind a translucent screen

    • Ceiling: turns the image upside down for ceiling-mounted projection

    • Display Messages: displays status messages (such as "Searching" or "Mute") in the lower-left corner of the screen

    • NND: prevents your notebook computer from going into Screen Save mode if the USB cable is connected

  • Startup Logo: allows you to display a blank screen instead of the default screen at startup, and when no source is detected

  • Blank Screen: determines what color is displayed when you press the Blank button on the remote. You can choose one of the following colors: black, white, or blue.

  • Language: allows you to select a language for the onscreen display

  • About: provides the following information: lamp hours used, active source, and signal format

Black Screen: The 4800 automatically displays a black screen after no active source is detected for 30 minutes. The image returns when an active source is detected or a remote or keypad button is pressed.

Power Save: The projector also has a Power Save feature that automatically turns the lamp off after no active sources are detected and no user interaction with the projector is performed for 20 minutes.

Security Lock: The 4800 has a security lock for use with a PC Guardian Cable Lock System.

Zoom/Focus: Using the thick ring around the lens, you can adjust the projector's zoom, while the thin ring allows you to adjust the focus.

Adjustable Height: If necessary, you can adjust the height of the projector by pressing the release button to extend the foot. Once the foot is extended, you may need to adjust the leveling foot located at the rear of the projector.

Speaker: The 4800 has a built-in mono speaker. The volume of the speaker can be adjusted using the keypad on the projector or the remote.

Remote Control: The supplied remote allows you to control all the projector's functions, except Keystone, focus, and zoom. Using the backlight button, you can make the buttons illuminate for approximately 10 seconds.

Mounting Options: The optional SP-CEIL-007B Digital Projector Mount lets you mount the 4800 to your ceiling.

User-replaceable Projection Lamp: The lamp hours used timer in the About menu counts the number of hours the lamp has been in use. After approximately 3,980 hours, the message "Change lamp" appears on the screen at startup. If the maximum lamp time of up to 4,000 hours is exceeded, the lamp will not light.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Monitor Out: This output features a D-sub 15-pin jack. If you are using a desktop computer and want to see the image on your computer screen as well as on the projection screen, connect the computer's monitor cable to the Monitor Out connector on the projector.

Using the supplied VGA-to-component adapter, the 4800 can accept input from a compatible source with component video outputs. This input will accept 1080i, 720p, and 480p signals.

Note: This input is not compatible with 480i signals.

S-video In: This input features a non-standard 7-pin S-video jack. Using the supplied standard S-video cable, you can connect a component with a standard S-video output. Using the supplied S-video-to-component adapter, you can connect a compatible source with component video outputs. This input will only accept 480i signals.

Video In: This input features a composite video jack, which allows you to connect a source with a composite video output.

Audio In: This minijack allows the 4800 to receive audio from a connected source for playback on the built-in mono speaker.

USB: You can use your computer's mouse with an optional remote control to operate the navigation buttons during a presentation. You must connect the projector to the computer via a USB cable (not included). USB drivers must be installed to use the USB feature.

Note: The remote included with this projector does not allow this function.

Warranty Information

Warranty: The projector is covered by a 2-year parts and labor warranty, while the lamp is covered for 90 days or 500 hours, whichever comes first.
