Our take on the Logitech® Harmony® 890

The Harmony 890 offers easy Internet-based setup, even if you're controlling an audio/video system with an extensive array of components. Plus, it features powerful RF (radio frequency) operation for longer range and greater installation flexibility.

In addition to using regular IR (infrared) signals, the Harmony 890 can also send RF commands to audio/video equipment installed in a closet, in a cabinet, or even in another room. The provided RF receiver lets you control up to eight components using the included IR flashers.

Harmony's innovative Internet-powered setup makes programming your remote a breeze. Just connect the remote to your computer with the supplied USB cable and go to the Harmony Remote website. Answer a few simple questions about the components you have and how they're set up. When you're done, your remote's programmed. The site remembers your setup, so reprogramming the Harmony is also easy.

The remote's color screen makes icons and labels easier to read, with "Activity" buttons that give you intuitive one-touch control of your system. For example, to play a DVD, just press "play DVD." The remote instantly evaluates your system, turns on or off the appropriate components, selects the proper settings, and starts the DVD player. And with its built-in rechargeable batteries and a charging cradle, the Harmony 890 stays ready for action.

Features

Overview: The Harmony Remote provides simple, intuitive control of even the most elaborate entertainment system for anyone in the family. The remote setup is accomplished through Harmony's interactive web site.

Setup: The Harmony Remote Activities are configured through unique Web Wizard tools on HarmonyRemote.com. Using Logitech's Smart State Database of electronic devices you can easily customize the remote to your system. The database, together with IR learning, ensures support of all infrared-controlled devices made by any manufacturer, including TiVo, HDVCR, HDTV, Plasma Displays, Monitors, Projectors, Lighting Control, CD/DVD-R, PVR (Personal Video Recorder), Satellite Radios, Amplifiers, DVD Players, Receivers, Dual VCRs and even combination devices like DVD-VCR components.

IR / RF Control: Logitech's Harmony 890 remote control uses both radio frequency (RF) and infrared (IR) wireless signals to deliver powerful complete control of your home-entertainment system that may be hidden behind cabinets. With a wireless range of up to 100 feet, the Harmony 890 remote sends RF commands to a wireless receiver, which then blasts infrared signals to the components.

RF Wireless Extender:

  • Contains a USB port to connect to your computer for setup.
  • Place the RF Extender no more than 5 meters from A/V equipment if wall mounting Extender.
  • Can control up to 8 devices with the supplied 4 dual head IR emitters (Each emitter can control up to 2 devices).
  • Attach emitters to the area where the device receives the IR signal or to a surface above, below or in front of the area where the device receives the IR signal.  The mini-jack end plugs directly into the Wireless Extender.

Backlighting: The buttons and LCD display are backlit for easy nighttime use.

Lithium-ion Battery/Recharging Docking Station: The Harmony 890 includes a removable rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, which provides up to a one-week charge under normal use. The remote comes with a docking station that keeps the remote fully charged. Because the docking station is horizontal, it allows the remote to be used while charging.

Learning function: In addition to the devices which can be entered using the web interface, this remote can also learn most functions of other infrared remotes.

Activity Buttons: The Harmony Remote is equipped with Smart State Technology Activity Control. You can press an Activity button such as "Watch TV" or "Watch a Movie", and the Harmony Remote will automatically set-up your entertainment system in seconds without you ever having to program a 'macro'. There are eight activity buttons.

Interactive Multi-color Display: Depending on the Activity you are enjoying, the Interactive Display offers additional commands or options allowing you to fully control the Activity or component.

Help: If you have a problem completing an activity function, the help button will guide you through the fix using the interactive multi-color display.

Flash Memory: The settings are stored in 2MB of non-volatile flash memory so they will never be lost, even when changing the batteries.

System Off: One push of the off button turns off all the equipment in your system.

System Requirements:

  • IBM or compatible PC: Microsoft Windows 98SE, 2000, Me or XP (USB port, CD-Rom drive, Internet access)
  • Macintosh PC:  Macintosh OS X 10.2 or later (USB port, CD-ROM drive, Internet access)

Great remote, flexible, but plan to spend some time

Written By JMG, Wisconsin on Thursday, May 24, 2007

This remote works very well with my mix of old, odd and new devices. This includes a new LG TV with PVR funtions, Pioneer cable box, Yamaha DVD and Receiver and Window Media center via a Media Center extender. All components are in an enclosed cabinet and RF-IR repeater works great. Having said that, it took me quite a while to get all the devices and "profiles" to work the way I wanted. Additionally, you really cannot leave other remotes sitting around because if someone turns things off with the other remotes, it will confuse the remote. If you have alot going on and are willing to spend time on it, however, it is a really strong, flexible, remote.

Great home remote

Written By Mike, Hockessin, De on Tuesday, May 15, 2007

I just received this remote from Crutchfield (ordered Sunday delivered Tuesday), and I am very impressed. The software to set up the remote is easy to use, and setting up all of my devices was simple. I have it controlling our main TV with a DVD player, DVR/cable box, and Xbox 360 with the IR, and the RF receiver set up in another room that controls the whole-house music system of a CD player and stereo receiver. Great product, I would recommend for anyone, theater enthusiast to beginner!

Amazing Remote

Written By Erwin, Rochester, NY on Wednesday, March 21, 2007

This remote is absolutely amazing. If you read any reviews online with complaints, know that the user simply don't understand how to program the remote correctly. I have tried about 5 universal remotes, from touch screens to this, and this remote is by far the best. It does take a bit of time to program the remote but the online program stores your configurations and makes its pretty easy. I like this remote so much I am going to buy my parents one because of the ease of use. Thumbs up Logitech, you hit the nail right on the head with this one!!!

Works great

Written By Adam, Nevada on Monday, February 26, 2007

Bought this to eliminate all of my remotes. It works great, setup was easy. Only thing is if you change an input on your TV or receiver, it's not as easy as I thought it would be to change. Still it's a great product, but like others have said it is expensive but worth it.

Remote Works Good, But SetUp is Not the Best

Written By Brandon, Mobile, Al on Wednesday, August 23, 2006

I bought this remote to control my home theater setup, where most of my components are behind closed doors. I have to say that the RF extender works great at controlling all my gear. The only problem I had was with the set up. The remote software was not competely up to date with my projector so I had to call customer support to work the kinks out, but they are extremely helpful. I also had a problem with it working with my TiVo, but again tech support at Logitech was GREAT! If you have a complex set up and need the RF capability I would definitely recommend this remote.

Setup takes a while, but it is excellent

Written By Greg, Bay Area, CA on Sunday, July 23, 2006

It took me approximately 90 minutes after charging the unit to get it running my system. I set it up to run a Denon 2807, Tivo unit, DirecTV HR10-250, Panasonic 50PX600U plasma display, old Mitsubisih TV, Sony 995 DVD changer, Toshiba HD-XA1, Monoprice HDMI switcher, and Monster HS5100. I use a MacBook Pro runing OS X 10.4.7, and everything worked just fine [though the web/software interface is not exactly a GUI delight]. The remote assistant is excellent at making sure things are working properly. Expensive, yes. Worth it? Yes.
