About the Logitech® Harmony® Elite

Ralph Graves

Both entertainment and home automation control

The Logitech Harmony Elite is an advanced universal remote control system that lets you control your home entertainment system and your home automation devices with the same device.

Both entertainment and home automation control

The Logitech Harmony Elite is an advanced universal remote control system that lets you control your home entertainment system and your home automation devices with the same device.

Logitech Harmony Elite

The Elite includes a Harmony Hub for Wi-Fi (left), a rechartgeable remote (center),and a free control app (right) (smartphone not included).

You can control up to 15 different home theater components, as well as a variety of home automation devices from leading manufacturers like Philips, LIFX, August™ smart locks, Nest®, Honeywell®, and more.  The system gives you everything you need — a free downloadable app, a wireless hub to forward commands from your phone to your A/V components, and a powerful remote for others to use.

Streamline your life with the intuitive Harmony App

Harmony's free app is available to both iPhone® and Android™ users. Swipe your smartphone's touchscreen to change from one component's control panel to the next. You can group commands together under one-touch activity icons for both entertainment and home automation control.

Tap "Watch Movie" for example, and the app automatically turns on your TV, receiver, and Blu-ray player — whatever combination is required to make it work in your system. Select “Good Morning,” and your Lutron-controlled blinds open and lights turns on, your Nest thermostat raises the temperature, and your bedroom stereo system starts playing music.

And because the system operates via Wi-Fi, you can use an Internet connection with your smartphone to remotely control your home automation devices. Turn on the porch light as you drive up, or make sure the August™ smart lock on your front door is set from the office.

Control devices behind closed doors

The Harmony Hub connects to your home Wi-Fi® network and converts signals from your smartphone into infrared (IR) signals your components can understand. This handy low-profile hub comes with two infrared mini-blasters so you can control components stored behind closed cabinet doors.

Game consoles are covered, too. The hub uses Bluetooth® to communicate with your PS3® and Wii® consoles and uses IR for controlling your Xbox 360® or Xbox One™. That eliminates the need for extra remotes, and frees up USB connections on your consoles.

All this and a powerful hand-held remote, too

The Elite system comes with an ergonomically-designed remote that fits comfortably in your hand. Its large swipe and tap touchscreen lets you quickly navigate through functions, and it features the same one-touch entertainment and home automation controls as the app.

The remote uses vibration feedback to confirm when it receives your command, so you don't have to look away from the TV. Just place the remote on its charging station to keep its rechargeable batteries powered up. But even if you forget to replace it, don't worry. The touchscreen and backlighting for the buttons are motion-activated, so they automatically shut off when the remote's not in use.

Easy setup

Simple, guided setup has always been a big part of Harmony's success. To get started, just download the free MyHarmony software to your Mac or PC. Then connect the Harmony Hub to it via the provided USB cable. MyHarmony will help you program your remote by asking some simple questions about your system and how you use it. It then downloads the commands and command sequences and wirelessly send them to your remote through the Hub. And you can use MyHarmony to update your remote whenever you upgrade your system with new gear.

    Product Research

    Features

Harmony Elite Remote System: The Harmony Elite remote system provides maximum flexibility for controlling your home entertainment and automation gear. Choose to control your home entertainment or automation system from the included remote or from the Harmony App on your Apple iOS or Android device. You can control up to 15 different devices from the Harmony Elite remote system.

App Based Setup: The first time you set up the Harmony Elite remote system, the Harmony App for Apple iOS 8.0+ or Android OS 4.0+ walks you through the setup process on your smartphone or tablet and stores your settings in your personal account. Your settings can then be wirelessly transmitted to your Harmony Hub, your Harmony Elite remote, or any other supported mobile device. If anything ever happens to your smartphone, Harmony Hub, or remote control, you can use these saved settings to set up a replacement system with ease.

Note: Harmony Elite remote system supports 2.4GHz 802.11 b/g/n wireless networks with WPA, WPA2-AES, and 64/128 bit WEP encryption.

Harmony Home Hub: The Harmony Home Hub is the center of your home entertainment and home control solution. Whether you use the Harmony App on your compatible mobile device or the Harmony Elite remote control, the hub stores your setup information and communicates between the remote control or app and your entertainment system devices. Placed near your television, set top box, game console and other equipment, it uses Infrared (IR), Bluetooth (RF), and WiFi to control your various devices.

    • Bluetooth (RF): The factory default setting for the remote is to output only radio frequency (RF) signals to communicate with the Harmony Hub (within a range of approximately 33 feet), which then relays the commands to your devices using infrared (IR). The remote can also be programmed to emit IR signals directly to the equipment to be controlled.
    • Infrared (IR): IR signals are sent from the hub and reflect off of walls and other surfaces before reaching your devices. Direct line of sight is generally not required. IR mini blasters extend the range of the Harmony Hub allowing you to control devices that are on other shelves or outside of your cabinet, such as a television. The remote can also be programmed to emit IR signals directly to the equipment to be controlled.
    • WiFi Connection: Connecting your Harmony Hub to your WiFi network has multiple advantages, such as enabling use of the Harmony app on your smartphone/tablet, providing Philips hue lighting control, and wirelessly syncing settings between your remote and your MyHarmony account. The Harmony Hub supports 802.11g/n with WPA Personal, WPA2-AES, or 64/128-bit WEP encryption.

Smartphone Control via the Harmony App: In addition to the remote control that comes with your Harmony Elite, you can use select Apple iOS and Android smartphones with the Harmony Control App as a remote control. Your smartphone will communicate with the Harmony Hub over WiFi, allowing your smartphone/tablet to control your devices. You get control over entertainment devices and home automation products. You can use swipe or tap gestures to control the adjust volume, change channels, fast forward, rewind, and more. Plus you get access to one-touch Activity controls and Favorite channels. From the app you can also enter model numbers and brands to add devices.

    • Apple iOS: Download the Harmony Control App from the Apple App store onto your Apple iOS (8.0+) device.
    • Android: Download the Harmony Control app from the Google Play store onto your Android (OS 4.0+) device.
Note: Your Apple iOS or Android device must be connected to the same WiFi network as the Harmony Elite Hub.

Full-Color Touchscreen w/ Gesture Commands: The included remote's 2.4" full-color touchscreen gives you easy gesture control of the remote's commands and activities (up to 11 different gesture motions). The remote vibrates to give you tactile feedback when a tap, swipe or other gesture has been recognized by the remote's touchscreen. The remote display automatically lights up when the remote control is moved.

    • Swipe up/down
    • Swipe up/down and hold
    • Swipe left/right
    • Swipe left/right and hold
    • Tap
    • Double tap
    • Long press
Note: The numeric keypad is located on the touchscreen.

Ergonomic Design: The remote's sculpted backlit buttons allow you to easily operate the remote in the dark, while its ergonomic design allows the unit to fit comfortably in your hand.

One-Touch Controls: The Harmony Elite uses Activity Control to give you one-touch control of your home entertainment & automation system.

    • Entertainment Activities: You can create Activities that manage how you use your devices together. For example, if you have a TV, AV receiver, and cable or satellite box, you will want to control all of these devices when you watch TV. To control all of these devices together, create a Watch TV Activity. When you have completed adding your Watch TV Activity, you can add the other Activities that you want your Harmony Elite to control. The types of Activities that MyHarmony offers you depends on the types of devices you have added. You can add multiple Activities based on each type of Activity offered, such as Watch TV, Watch Movie, or Play Game.
    • Custom Activities: Most Activities should fit into one of the Activity types offered. The Custom Activity type is recommended only for home appliances such as light controllers, fans, climate control devices, etc. The Custom Activity does not provide optimized defaults such as button customizations, Activity icons, and Favorite Channels as the other predefined Activity types do. These may be configured manually from MyHarmony.
    • One Touch System Off: The Off button on the Harmony Elite remote powers off all of the devices for an Activity with one touch. For example, in a Watch TV Activity that uses a TV, Cable Box, and AV Receiver, pressing the Off button will power off all three devices at the same time.
Note: The Harmony Elite knows the current state of the devices it controls by remembering the last Activity you selected. For example, if you switch from watching cable TV to watching a DVD, the Harmony Elite knows that it doesn't need to power the TV off and back on; it just leaves the TV turned on. It also it knows that it needs to power off the cable box and power on the DVD player.

Favorites: The Favorites screen allows you to view your predefined favorite TV channels and station icons (when available). Using the MyHarmony desktop software program, you can select up to 50 Favorite Channels to display on the remote. Selecting a Favorite Channel will start your "Watch TV" Activity, if it's not already started, and tune directly to that channel. Using the touchscreen, you can add, remove and reorder your Favorite Channels right on the remote. The Harmony App on your smartphone allows you to customize Favorite Channels unique to each smartphone. Changes made on your smartphone or on your Harmony remote only affect the device on which they are made and will not be reflected on the other devices.

Command Customization: The Harmony Elite remote allows you to customize the commands that each button sends, or what commands appear in your Activity list. These button mappings may be unique for each of your Activities. This allows each button or screen to have different functions based on context. For example, in your Watch a DVD Activity, the yellow button may perform the eject command, while in your Listen to Music Activity this same yellow button may be used to pull up your Favorite preset.

Home Automation: The Harmony Elite lets you integrate home automation with home entertainment control to create personalized home experiences.

    • Philips Hue Lighting: The Harmony Elite is able to communicate with Philips hue wireless lighting systems when your Harmony is configured to use your home's WiFi network. Once paired with hue, a light bulb will appear in the lower left corner of your remote allowing you to control your Philips hue light bulbs. Light, color, and brightness settings can be configured for each Activity. For example, you could turn on lights and turn them blue when you watch TV, and dim the lights and turn them yellow for a movie. These settings can be programmed as part of an Activity so that optimal lighting will always be set for each Activity.
    • Other Smart Home Automation: Using the Harmony Elite Home system you'll also be able to control smart home automation devices from Nest, Lutron, August, and PEQ from the included remote or the Harmony mobile app.

Alexa Compatible: Connect any Logitech Harmony hub-based remote with an Amazon Alexa enabled product (including the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Tap and Echo Show - all sold separately) and you can start or stop Harmony Activities with just your voice. In addition to Activities (like "Watch TV"), you can also control playback functions such as Play, Pause, & Resume, as well as raise or lower the volume. When Logitech Harmony and Amazon Alexa work together, you bring the power of voice to your home entertainment center.

    Notes:
    • Amazon Alexa and the Logitech Harmony skill is currently only able to support a single Harmony Hub. If you have more than one Harmony Hub you will be asked to select one during the skill linking process.
    • Some Harmony Activity or Favorite TV channel names conflict with things Amazon Alexa would like to do natively. For example, Activities with the word "Music", "Pandora", or "Spotify" will often not trigger through Harmony and will instead begin playing music through Alexa. You may want to consider, "Alexa, tell Harmony to turn on the tunes" as a friendly name to trigger a Harmony music-based Activity.

Learning Function: In addition to the devices which can be entered using the web interface, this remote can also learn most functions of other infrared remotes.

Lithium-Ion Battery + Recharging Docking Station: The Harmony Elite remote control includes an integrated rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, which provides up to a one-week charge under normal use. The remote comes with a docking station and AC power adapter that keeps the remote fully charged.

Interference Warning: Avoid operating your devices using the original, manufacturer's remote control or by powering it on and off using the buttons on the device itself as doing so will cause Harmony to become out of sync with your devices. For example, if you select the Watch TV Activity and then use your TV remote to turn off the TV, the next time you want to select an Activity, the Harmony Elite will think that your TV is already powered on and will not turn it on. Other things that can confuse the Harmony Elite include inter-device communication that turns devices on or off, such as HDMI-CEC.

Note: If the Harmony Elite becomes out of sync with your devices, you can use the Help function on your remote to bring the TV back in sync.

Help: If you have a problem completing an activity function, the help button will guide you through the fix using the interactive multi-color touchscreen display.

Dimensions: Dimension for the Remote, Hub, Charging station, and IR mini-blasters.

    Q
Is the Harmony elite compatible with Tivo?
    gerald  Oct 18, 2020
    4 answers
    A
I have the Elite but not TiVo. However, I see TiVo device in setup and am able to set up through power on step so yeah I'd say it's supported. A note on the Elite hub- it only supports 2.4ghz wifi and any device controlled over network (not IR) must be on same network. So your smart TV for instance can't use 5ghz wifi (or wired LAN) unless you limit it to IR control which is difficult to automate.
    tom  Oct 18, 2020
    A
Yes. I'm not a TiVo subscriber but I do know that there are many TiVo models supported by the Harmony Elite. Hope yours is on their compatibility list. Harmony Elite is a great product. Enjoy!

Almost certainly Yes. The Logitech database of covered devices is huge. Dish boxes will be there. You can check online at the webpage for Harmony remotes. For me, I have TiVO, Apple TV, xBox One, Wii, Marantz AVR, and LG TV. Works perfectly.

The Logitech Harmony Elite I have does not. I don't think any other Logitech models do either. Would be a great upgrade if they eventually do but I think it's a proprietary restriction for voice support options such as Siri, Alexa, etc.

The Harmony Elite is a excellent remote. It will control with ease your Apple and any other component with ease. I had a Harmony one which became dated and had to go to the elite. It's not as easy to configure as the one was but Harmony support is excellent along withe Crutchfield arm. Go for it. Controlling a system could not be easier.........

I use Apple TV and it's listed on the device just like any other device, but the Apple remote is so unusual, that once I turn on Apple TV and it switches the television input and the receiver audio, I start to use the Apple TV remote. I listed Apple Music just like another device to choose from on the Harmony face. Then when needed, the Harmony off button again turns everything off.

Is it comparable with Yamaha music cast?
    scott  Mar 07, 2020

The remote can get you to the correct inputs and control volume but you need to use the app to play music. It's the same for most devices like MusicCast.

Sorry haven't ever tried but if U have the devices original remote, try that.
    thomas  Jan 14, 2020
    A
This is not a question of the remote. The remote only mirrors the device to which it is programmed. For instance, if you are asking about a cable box, you must navigate to the setup potion of the cable box. Whereas, if you are talking about an Apple TV, you should navigate to its settings. Without knowing which devices are programmed into you remote no one will be able to tell you a more detailed instruction.
    john  Jan 13, 2020
    A
Depends on what remote and/or device you are controlling with your Elite. Sometimes not all commands are programmed into the Elite and you need to manually enter the command via the Elite app/software.

The harmony hub is a learning remote as well. If you have an infrared remote for your device you can still program the hub even if the device isn't on the harmony list. The harmony list of compatible devices has never failed me. The only thing I've ever had to use the learning side for was a no name hdmi switch. Harmony is awesome.

You need a hub in every location that you would like to control your electronics. When signing in the harmony app will ask which hub you want to control so make sure to give each hub a unique name.

I have a 2-door BDI cabinet, with effectively four distinct glass-fronted enclosed sections, plus my TV on top. Will the two IR blasters be sufficient to control my setup?

It is likely that they will be sufficient. I set mine up in a 3 door cabinet, my components are limited to 2 doors containing 4 sections. My system works without issue.

    A
Yes, I have the same setup with a home theater receiver, satellite receiver, roku 4, apple tv, fire tv, and a UHD blu ray player in the cabinet. I have an IR blaster on the top shelf on each side of the cabinet and it works great!
    michael  Sep 14, 2016
    A
You may have to place an IR blaster up by the TV if the lower section of your cabinet is enclosed. The remote comes with two additional blasters plus the main hub itself is a blaster. Remember, you can always control the TV with line of sight from the remote (Doing this will not allow you to control your TV with the App). Once in the software, you can go to the section "Hub Assignments" to control port A, B, Hub, and Remote.

    Q
I am looking for a solution to control 2 different TVs/receivers/cable boxes in 2 different rooms (Family room and Media Room). Can I put 2 harmony hubs in 1 media closet? If the cable boxes are the same, won't changing the channel on 1 send an IR signal to both cable boxes (if the hub is also an IR blaster) saying to change the channel (causing both TVs to change channel)? What is the workaround or is there a solution to have 1 hub and multiple remotes?
    kurt  Jun 15, 2016

    A
Only 1 Hub per Remote. Only 1 remote per Hub. You can "assign" ports on the hub. There are two ports on the back, plus the hub blaster itself.
    mark  Jun 15, 2016
    A
i don't thin k a single hub would work in this case. To keep the signal from getting mixed up from multiple hubs sending to similar equipment i would look into using individual IT repeaters that can be attached to the controlled boxes. you could then screen or block them from catching any stray IR reflections from the other hub.

It depends upon what you're controlling with the Elite. If the device playing video/audio has the function, then the Elite can do it, and you can assign it just about anywhere on the remote.

Yes. Many of the buttons on this remote, perhaps like your others, can have two functions via a short press and a long press. I believe this remote comes with the 30 second jump as the long press on the fast forward button. I moved this to the short press as I use the function frequently to get through commercials.

Yes. But watch your distance between the remote and the RF hub. Anymore than 30' and you could have problems. To work around this, keep the RF hub behind your TV or in the same room as your TV and extend the IR over Cat5e to blasters in the other room. Good luck

If you buy a second hub for another room you can use your phone or tablet. You just change hubs on your phone or tablet.
    troy  May 10, 2016
    A
No, I don't think you will be able to use your smart phone or tablet for another TV, because the hub and RF transmitters are only connected to the one TV. You will only be able to control the one TV that is connected to that hub with your smart phone or tablet. I called Logitech and asked them if I bought another hub could I use the same remote to control the new hub over my Wi-Fi network for another TV and they told me no. I hope this helps.
    michael  May 06, 2016
    A
No, you can't use your smartphone to directly control anything. The remote itself can control devices via infrared, and it also communicates with the Harmony Hub via a radio frequency signal. The hub can then send the infrared signals. This works well since you can place the hub anywhere that is convenient and within line if sight of what you want to control. The remote itself then does not need to have line of sight since the hub can send the signals. There is an app for your smartphone that can communicate with the hub which can then control your devices. Hope this helps, Frank
    frank  May 06, 2016
    A
You require the remote and a hub to operate your devices. All devices must be within the distance of the hub and the remote sensors that plug into the hub. The remote talks to the hub and the hub sends out the signal to your devices within range of the remote sensors. If your devices are in different rooms you will require an additional remote and hub.

Yes. If you use the extra included IR extending receivers, you should be able to reach that length. Remember, the hub uses wifi as well as IR, so you could be outside your house and as long as you have wifi, your remote will still work. It works best if the hub is next to the items you are controlling though.

Jason, I purchased my Elite last October to control my TV set up where the cable box, AV receiver, DVD player and Apple TV are in a cabinet and my Plasma screen is, of course, outside. All the components in the cabinet are communicated by RF through the Harmony hub and the plasma screen is controlled by IR from the Harmony remote control. It is working fine. Of course you have to point the remote control at the IR device for it to receive the signal. Depending on the component sequence this could be a few seconds long. Let me know if you have other questions. Rudy

i do not personally one a play station but here is what harmony says. Harmony is able to control your PlayStation 4, including navigating through the menus and playing / pausing streaming apps such as Netflix and Amazon Instant Video. However, Sony does not permit any remote other than their game controller to power on this game console. Please first turn on your PlayStation using the game controller before launching your Play Game Activity using Harmony. Once powered on, Harmony will automatically Bluetooth connect and enable device control.

Greetings -- I am considering purchasing this item. However I have a fully enclosed cabinet w/5-7 components all stretch out over a width of 72" cabinet. Does this item come with enough IR blasters for enough components? According to specs it comes with 2 of them so do I assume for just 2 components? I would hate to invest in this and custom wire my whole set up only to find out I will need more IR blasters. And if so, what is the cost for this option?

I just purchased and installed the Harmony Elite. My components are in an enclosed (wood and sheetrock) cabinet that is 52 inches wide with 2 shelves. It works great. It comes with the Hub and 2 mini Blasters. I use the Hub on one shelf and one mini Blaster on the other shelf. These units project the IR signals into the cabinet and the components see the signal. I have 4 components on one shelf with the mini Blaster and 2 components on the other shelf with the Hub. The hand held remote controller sends an RF signal to the hub which then sends out the IR signal for the components. The remote also sends out IR signals and I use that to control my plasma screen which naturally isn't in the enclosed cabinet. I hope this helps you. Rudy
    rudy  Nov 12, 2015
    A
I don't think the length of your cabinet would be an issue as long as there is room between to front of the cabinet and each individual area where your components are so the IR signal could bounce around the cabinet. Each blaster can control multiple devices it's not a one for one situation. Not sure of the cost for two additional blasters would be but I'd be shocked if it was more than say $30. These Logitech ones are quite robust compared to ones I've used in the past. Setup was a snap and I bet this remote will work for you. I still am thrilled with how well it works for me. Hope this helps.

Hi i just purchased the harmony elite for my theater and all my equipment is in a entertainment closet and i have about 8 units hooked up in a sanus equipment rack. This closet is fully enclosed and i have no access to it from the theater and i had the same concern you had before purchasing this item but i have to tell you it works great. I had this remote programmed and set up by my theater guy who set up my theater and he placed the ir blaster in such a way that it covers all my equipment. My rack is working off of 1 blaster. I have to tell you this hub maxes out at 2 blaster can not expand to more. But crutchfield is great with returns so try it out if not you could always return it. Hope this helped
    akash  Nov 12, 2015

You will very likely not even need the additional IR blasters that this remote comes with. The IR blaster itself is likely going to be enough to communicate with all seven pieces of your equipment. If you need additional blasters you can plug in the additional two blasters that come with the harmony for more coverage however it's very unlikely that you will need them ( unless your cabinet has some sort of crazy dividers inside). Keep in mind, if you want to take full advantage of the networking capabilities of the remote so that you can control your system with a smartphone or tablet make sure that you run an IR blaster or IR target from the hub to your television set. If you do not do this your portable device will not be able to control your television ( because if you do not use the blasting technology you will have to tell the remote control to send IR signals directly from the IR remote). We have been installing Harmony remote since they came out. We have programmed every single model that they have made. This model by far is one of the best ones they have made.
